I hope this issue of the DSS News finds all of you enjoying your summer. Looking at news from Denmark the summer hasn’t been very warm, in fact, a lot of rain has been coming down. I understand that the annual Rebild celebration of America’s 4th of July was rained out this year.

Such a shame, as it’s an incredible event. It’s one of those bucket list things you should definitely try to do...at least once.

More information is included in this issue about the upcoming National Convention, including some great ways to make this trip a wonderful vacation. We also have provided information on the work performed by several National Board officer positions. It’s a tremendous honor to serve on the National Board, and a role we hope you would consider for yourself.

We also want you to know that there is space available for advertising in the National Convention Program. Advertising is a great way to help support the convention, and we get to see some interesting products or services available to us.

You could use the space for a greeting too, lots of fun you can have with this.

Dear Sisters, I was recently visiting my family’s cabin in Door County, Wisconsin and took a few moments to admire a cross-stitched bell pull that my grandmother had made. I remember when I was a very little girl, she had had it hanging in her house and I always loved the different pieces of cross stitch that she displayed. This bell-pull has several designs of different ships on them, all named with the Danish name for each below or beside it. There are also a couple of sailors having a splendid time, it looks like!

This made me think of all of the Danish artwork and craftsmanship that exists in our world. Perhaps you have a cross-stitch bell-pull or framed piece in your home. Or maybe a painting by a Danish artist or even perhaps a piece of Danish furniture? I’d love to see any and all beautiful pieces of Danish art out there, if you’re willing to share it.

Updates from Ellen Lodge 21, Denver, CO May in Colorado brought showers and snow.

The first day of summer was cold, and in the mountains, over 1 1/2 feet of snow, with skiing until the fourth of July. Then comes June 27 and the temperatures are in the 90s. Welcome to Colorado where the weather keeps you guessing.

Since our President, Birgitte Jappe Ross has moved to Louisiana, the members have graciously accepted the role of acting President at the meetings until elections in November. In April, Past President, Chris Hix presided over the meeting and in May, Theresa Sorenson. We had two presentations: Ethel Jergensen Evans gave a very informative talk about the migration of Danes to the U.S. starting in the 1800s. She spoke of the difficulty, time and expense of immigrants packed in steerage compartments for 4-8 weeks. She personalized her story by telling of her own families start as immigrants.

Melinda (Mindy) Brown told of her great-grandfather Rev. Mathias Nissen Andreasen (1871-1943) being presented the King Christian X’s Liberty Medal. The medal is awarded for special services to Denmark during World War II during the German occupation. The medal was awarded to those having contributed to Denmark’s survival from abroad.

Congratulations to Sister Bergen Evans who is a 2019 high school graduate and a recipient of the Betty Hansen Scholarship for $2500.

We are so excited for Sister Lynne McEarchen who is doing well after surgery and the completion of her cancer treatment. She’s back to work and coming to Sisterhood meetings.

21, meetings were held in a variety of “Halls” near downtown Denver. One in particular has become significant.

From 1905 to 1920 the Brotherhood and Sisterhood meetings were held at 2700 Arapahoe St. (Dania Hall).

Since the annual picnic on June 15 was approaching, Pia invited Meghan to join us.

There were 32 in attendance (including Meghan and her mother, Molly Frank), so she was able to pick our brains about the history of the Sisterhood and traditions from the past (passwords, being blackballed). Ellen Lodge artifacts, including our Heritage Book with snippets of past meetings, were on display for her research.

The reason for her interest in the Sisterhood: Meghan is the artistic Director of the Artibus Theatre which will be housed on the 2nd floor of the building. She is developing a play about the different clientele that occupied space at 2700 Arapahoe since it was built in 1899. Meghan has invited us to take a tour of the building which is known as Savoy at Curtis Park. In its heyday, Five Points, where the Savoy is located, was well known for its music scene and social clubs with large wooden ballroom floors just like the Savoy’s. In the 21st century the area is becoming an integral part of Denver’s revitalization. We are so excited to visit the building, to be part of the play and of course, go see the play at its completion. It was great meeting Meghan and Molly, and we wish them a prosperous future with her historical building and the Artibus Theatre.

This was our 3rd year to spend a day in

the mountains at the “Edgar Resort for our June picnic. Pia, Sam Edgar and family, along with Pia and Renee Hansen were perfect hostesses.

As always, the picnic had a theme and this year: Polse Traditions, Polser and Posevogne – Sausages and Sausage Carts – Hotdogs and hotdog stands. They even had aprons that said “Pia’s Polse Vogn and Sam’s Sausage Cart“. I knew the Danes love their hotdogs, but I did not know one could actually make a very difficult quiz about the history of hotdogs, but leave it to Pia. There were 15 questions and most of us failed it miserably. And who got more right than anyone?

The youngsters. I’m not sure, but I don’t “think” you’d know the answers without Google. Just sayin! As mentioned before, Colorado had a very wet Spring and Mother Nature did not disappoint on the day of the picnic. By the time most of us arrived and said our hellos, the rain came down.But as Pia found out last year, their property can accommodate 32 of us inside as well as out. No matter the location, everyone always has a great time visiting and enjoying the yummy food (including boiled and grilled beef and pork hotdogs) supplied by the Sisters and friends attending the picnic. We all went home with a bag of “Sasquatch (Bigfoot) Turds” – Wildflower clay seed bombs. All you have to do is chuck em anywhere. Can’t wait to see what they grow up to be.

Ellen Lodge will have a caravan travelling to Omaha for the National Convention. We hope to see you there.

Message from The Museum of Danish America It’s official! The Museum of Danish America has been awarded $45,300 through the Historical Resource Development Program of the State Historical Society of Iowa. What this means is, the Danish Sisterhood of America archives collection will be sorted, rehoused, and cataloged! Cheyenne Jansdatter, the museum’s Archival Collections Manager, will be on contract for two years to lead this project.

To kick it off, Cheyenne is requesting volunteers to help complete a transfer of documents from non-archival-grade boxes to safer housing and to reorganize the collection at the same time. If you’ve ever wondered how archives work, here’s your chance. Under Cheyenne’s direction, you’ll get a glimpse of history being preserved. Join us for any part of August 12-16 at the Elk Horn Town Hall – help all week or one day! To sign up, please RSVP no later than August 7 by calling 712-764-7001 or emailing cjansdatter@danishmuseum. org. Snacks and coffee will be provided.

This grant is a one-to-one match, meaning that the museum is required to invest the same amount or more into the grant project. To date, almost $5000 has been donated by Sisterhood lodges and individual members toward this project.

Food, Friends, and Fundraising with Kenosha, WI Katherine Lodge #20 Many greetings from Jim Nielsen from Racine, Wisconsin and another Midsummer’s Eve greeting to you all. I would again like to write to you telling you of one of the finest Midsummer’s Eve events the Racine/Kenosha Danish Sisterhood Katherine Lodge #20 has ever experienced.

Anna Marie Nielsen, the secretary of the Katherine Lodge, secured one of the best restaurants in Racine, Wisconsin for the purpose of providing a 2 day event of celebration for the entire Danish community of the Racine, Kenosha, Milwaukee, and Chicago areas. The Ivanhoe Pub and Eatery, 231 Main St. in Racine was the location of the event. The restaurant’s most gracious owner and host of our celebration, Douglas Nicholson, provided everyone with some of the finest authentic Danish cuisine seen in the Racine and Kenosha areas in a very long time.

A 2-day event was held on Saturday and Sunday evenings, June 22, from 6 to 10pm and June 23, from 5 to 9pm with a “Sold Out” number of Danes in attendance. Danish Sisterhood National Trustee, Karin Wasler attended the Saturday celebration, coming all the way from Los Angeles, California.

A most spectacular four course dinner started out with a selection of 3 Smørrebrød: gravad lax med dill og citron, leverpostej med agurk, bægstrenger og svampe, and Dansk blåost med kandiserede valnødder og druer.

This course was followed by Kartoffeler og porresuppe med selleri.

Everyone was given a choice of one of three main course selections: medisterpølse, torsk med sennep sovs, or frikadeller. All entrees came with Stuvede ærter og gulerødder (creamed peas and carrots in white sauce) and a choice of Brunede Kartofler (caramelized potatoes) or Stuvede Kartofler (parsley creamed potatoes). The frikadeller and medisterpølse also came with homemade Rødkål (Red Cabbage).

Finally, the meal was finished with a sweet dessert of Brødbudding med Cognac Sovs (bread pudding with brandy sauce).

snaps including Aalborg Jubilaeum, Aalborg Taffel, Celebration and Northshore Akvavit along with imperial glasses filled to the rim of the finest of øl (Beer) on earth, Carlsberg on tap.

There were 10 very large and very full raffle baskets of authentic Danish products provided such as Danish books, Racine’s authentic famous Danish kringles, B&G and Royal København plates, Danish Flags and dolls, a Bloody Mary basket with all the makings, and an Akvavit basket, provided by our host Doug Nicholson that topped off the evening like no other.

I would like to thank our good friend Doug Nicholson and all of his hard working associates, Anna Marie Nielsen for her constant drive and ambition, and all of the loyal Danish Sisterhood Katherine Lodge #20 members who provided a most magical evening for the entire Danish Community of the Southeastern Wisconsin.

Hygge flowed more than ever at this year’s Danish Day. We enjoyed our old friends and embraced new ones. We missed those who were unable to attend.

The smorrebrod consisted of many different foods–open faced sandwiches on rugbrod, baked beans, salads, and more.

Following the Danish tradition, coffee was at 3pm with a large variety of pastries and baked goods.

There was lively music to dance to or to simply enjoy.

It would be fun to welcome you to next year’s Danish Day. Please mark your calendar for June 8, 2020 at noon, at Seneca Lake State Park on routes 5 and 20 in Geneva, NY. Come and join us for a day of fun, hygge, and new friends!

Save the Date for the 73rd Annual Danebod Folk Meeting, August 21-25, 2019, at the Danebod Folk School in Tyler, MN. Registration materials will be mailed in early May and will also be available on-line at danebodfolkmeeting.org.

Tentative lecture topics are Danish Values in an American Culture, Updates on Eyewitness Palestine, Soil Health, Mental Health, Children’s Literature, History and Music of Leonard Bernstein, NAFTA & USMCA, Eastern European History, and When Religionless Faith Meets Faithless Religion in Joy. The Museum of Danish America “Hygge” traveling exhibit will be set in the Stone Hall during the meeting.

Saturday evening entertainment will be an ensemble representing The ASI Spelmanslag fiddling group, including Ross Sutter, a Swedish music historian and accomplished guitar player.

91st EGC District Convention The 91st Annual Convention of the Eastern General Committee (EGC), your Eastern Lodges was held this year in Windsor, Connecticut on April 5, 6 and 7, 2019 at the Courtyard Marriot--a first-rate two-day event. The Frihed Lodge #153 from Hartford, CT hosted the EGC Convention and also celebrated their 100th anniversary. I would like to begin by taking a moment to commend Lodge 153 for the fine convention they put together and congratulate you on your 100th Anniversary!

On Friday April 5th registration began followed by a welcome reception and game night creating a perfect atmosphere to reunite with old friends and meet new friends. We had fun catching up with each other while eating and table-hopping, chatting and playing the different games set up around the room. Creative and unique prizes and raffle baskets were displayed, we bought lots of tickets increasing our chances to win our favorite prize and basket!

On Saturday, April 6th at 9:00 AM Frihed Lodge President, Lisa Petersen, kicked off our meeting with a warm welcome to everyone.

Our district business was underway presided over by Celeste Mattia Cattie, President of the EGC. Roll call was taken of the officers and delegates with 26 present at the convention. A solemn moment at our annual convention each

year is our remembrance of lost sisters, led by Past President Carole Pierorazio. Carole and each Lodge Delegate present placed a flower in a vase on the altar remembering sisters who passed away since our last convention. Informative Lodge reports were presented giving us insight into each Lodge’s activities from the past year. We decided to make a donation to the DSS National Disaster Relief Fund and asked each lodge delegate to ask their lodge if they would match the EGC’s donation. A new slate of officers was presented and installed at the Saturday evening banquet. Our National Treasurer, Carol Faruolo, gave us updates from National and on the Convention being held in Omaha, Nebraska in October.

Saturday afternoon we took a break from convention business and enjoyed lunch in a nearby restaurant. Enjoying the great weather several of us set out to do a little sightseeing in Winslow. Lodge 153 gave us many ideas; some of us chose visits to the Mark Twain and Dr. Seuss Museums. Others decided to take in some shopping discovering new shops a short drive from the hotel.

Business portion of the convention resumed on Sunday—working and interacting with everyone at the convention was a pleasant and productive experience. Our Trustee reported 15 cards were sent out to our sick and shut-in sisters. An invitation was received from Sunshine Lodge 181 to host the 2020 EGC Convention in Florida. Plans are underway to hold the convention the first week of May. Sunshine Lodge 181, President Anni Callaghan, was awarded Outstanding Sister of the Year!

SHAPE OUR FUTURE: RUN FOR NATIONAL BOARD Submitted by Karin Wasler As you know, every national convention includes the election of our national board members. Seven people work together for four years to provide leadership and support to the membership and lodges of Danish Sisterhood of America.

While the traditional duties of our secretary and treasurer are quite defined, the roles of our three trustees can vary depending on interest and skills. For this term, trustee responsibilities were divided into SCHOLARSHIP, MEMBERSHIP, and the BUTIKKEN, or store.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Annual oversight of DSS scholarships, educational grants and camp grants includes the processing of applications throughout the year, working with a small committee of judges, acknowledging scholarship program donations and answering questions about our programs. Deadlines for scholarships and grants occur periodically throughout the year.

Communication with local lodges, applicants and winners is just one way the Scholarship Trustee interacts with our members. This term Christina also sent birthday cards to Tivoli Lodge and Individual members.

MEMBERSHIP Responding to individual requests for membership information, lodges requests for marketing materials or one of the DSS banners, and the development of resources for local lodges are all included in the current responsibilities of our national trustee for membership. Requests are received via email and the phone. Interacting with potential members about our organization and following up with local lodges make up the majority of the duties for this position. This term Karin designed ads, brochures and marketing materials used by the DSS. BUTIKKEN or Store What would an organization be without merchandise to promote and showcase our passion for the DSS? The trustee for the Butikken works with other board members to design and order store items and manages store inventory. Keeping an eye out for current trends and new ideas are included in Linda’s current responsibilities this term.

Activities in Omaha Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

Although zoos are rarely the most exciting thing to see or do in a state, the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha is an exception. This unique facility is home to the world’s largest indoor desert, the largest indoor jungle, and the largest nocturnal exhibit. In addition, it also features an aquarium.

Old Market and Old Market Plaza

The Old Market is a terrific spot to shop, dine, and experience a glimpse of what Omaha would have looked like in its early days. Cobblestone streets and renovated old buildings from the early part of the 19th century give the area a quaint and historical feel. Housed in these interesting buildings are a diverse set of retail establishments ranging from galleries to coffee shops and fine dining establishments.

The Old Market is right downtown and is within easy walking distance to many of Omaha’s other tourist attractions, including the Durham Museum and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.

Boulder Creek Amusement Park Performing Arts Repertory Putting Plus Miniature Golf MUSEUMS: Durham Museum, Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha’s Children’s Museum, General Crook House Museum, etc. (many choices, auto, flight, contemporary art, …)

Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari, Ashland

Address: 16406 292nd St, Ashland NE 68003 While a little ways outside of Omaha, The Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari in Ashdland is worth the trip! The Park is a 440-acre drive through park that includes dozens of native North American Animals, as well as scenic wetlands and prairie landscapes. On a visti to this park, you’ll get to see bison, elk, cranes, wolves and so much more!

Strategic Air and Space Museum, Ashland

Address: 28210 West Park Highway, Ashland Fans of aircraft and aviation technology will be impressed by the extensive collections on show at this museum in Ashland, mid-way between Omaha and Lincoln. First opened in 1959 as the Strategic Air Command, the museum grew over the years and in 1998 moved to its current location in a modern facility. A few years later, the name was changed to the Strategic Air and Space Museum. The museum is spread over 300,000 square feet and showcases all manner of airplanes, spacecraft, and special exhibits that change on a regular basis. Also on site is a planetarium that features seasonal astronomy shows and motion rides (for an additional fee) that simulate the feeling of being in a helicopter and riding a roller coaster.

Joslyn Castle-Mansion

The George and Sarah Joslyn Home, is a mansion located at 3902 Davenport Street in the Gold Coast Historic District of Omaha. Built in the Scottish Baronial style in 1903, the Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It was designated as an Omaha landmark in 1979.

A Note about District Conventions It is not uncommon for the DSS National Board to forego attending district conventions during a National Convention year. This cost-saving measure allows us to redirect funds for convention, knowing we will see you later this year.Â

District Secretaries can expect to receive copies of handouts to be presented to Lodge Delegates and District Board Members. All National Board members will be attending their respective District Conventions. Please direct your questions to those members. Of course, you are always invited to reach out to anyone of us on the board. See our contact information at the front of the DSS News.

We wish all of you successful conventions this year, and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Omaha in October!Â
