Happy 4th of July! What a fun time of year to celebrate America’s independence with family and friends. And for us, the joy of knowing that Denmark celebrates right along with us. Denmark is the only other country in the world that celebrates with us, with a dedicated park, Rebild, where the festivities take place. It’s difficult to express the feeling of being there, walking down the path with flags flying for every state in the Union, and the Danish jets that do a flyover. The pageantry of the event, luncheon, and dignitaries is a lifetime experience not to be missed. So, thank you Denmark for celebrating with us!

This is the time of year the Sisterhood is preparing to close out our fiscal year (end of August). It’s also a good time to remind our membership that the data we retain is best when it’s accurate. If you have an address change, phone, email, or perhaps a need to change your beneficiary due to a life change, please reach out to our National Secretary, Glenda Madrid to get that updated as soon as possible.

Dear Sisters, The past couple of weeks, I’ve been following the World Cup tournament. It’s been tons of fun watching soccer (or football as it’s more commonly known worldwide!) teams playing against each other. Even more fun was watching Denmark play.

Unfortunately, Denmark didn’t make it into the final rounds. However, Denmark did bring people together once again. Watching fans at the games as well as watching the games with others was a wonderful experience and really demonstrated the spirit people feel for Denmark.

So now I ask each of you, how do you come together to share the spirit of Denmark?

On the Cover Title: Hvidsten Kro Region: Jutland, North of Randers Photograph by: Lauren C. Nielsen Hvidsten Kro is a historic inn located between Randers and Mariager. There are five buildings on the property, the oldest was a stable from 1790.

In 1943 the inn became the center for the Hvidsten group, who were part of the Danish Resistance in WWII. Most of the members were arrested by the Gestapo and executed. There is a memorial erected on the site.

The main buidling, today, exists as a restaurant serving wonderful traditional dishes. The interior is eclectically decorated with old Danish plates, copper pans, Danish flags, and more.

Photographs must be high resolution and should be accompanied by a short description of the photo’s content. Photos from Danish events, Sisterhood meetings, travels around Denmark, Danish culture and more are all great topics.

News from HAABETS FREMTID LODGE 78, TROY, NEW YORK After what seems like a long winter, we believe that summer has arrived in the northeast. Eleven sisters, two youth members and five men gathered at a local country club to enjoy lunch and meeting in the outdoors. The scenery was lovely and the weather was beautiful. We all had a great time visiting with folks who we had not seen over the winter months.

A special thanks to Marilyn Dore who made all the arrangements for us.

Jenna Myers announced that a presentation of “Frozen on Broadway” will be presented in our area at the Proctors Theater next fall. Many of the ladies were anxious to see this so we will try to include it in our programing for next year.

It was with great honor that we presented 25 year pins to Jenna Myers and Erica Kelsey. There was also a 10 year pin for Annaliese Myers, one of our Youth Members, who was unable to attend.

Tribute to Ingrid Hansen, Past National Treasurer From Lodge # 90 Lincoln Nebraska Ingrid and I met briefly at the National Convention in Des Moines Iowa in 1987. We were both elected as alternates to the National board. In 1989 Vice President Elizabeth Garde died and I was installed as third trustee. At the 1991 National Convention in Portland, OR, Ingrid was elected as the new National Treasurer along with four other new members to the board.

From the very first meeting, I was impressed with Ingrid’s knowledge on financial matters and her direct way of presenting her view. She also had a funny dry wit. We became fast friends.

When Lorraine Zembinski, due to illness, could no longer serve as president, I was installed in January 1994 as National President. “A fast move forward for the National Board!”

In my term of office, Ingrid was always there for me, her constant support meant a lot to me, she would never hesitate to give her opinion. Ingrid was a real asset to the Board and the Danish Sisterhood.

She was loyal, always prompt, generous and a gracious host when I stayed at her home. We always knew “our” money was in good hands.

I roomed with Ingrid in Denver for the National Convention in 2015. It would be the last time I got to see her. We did email periodically and always sent birthday and Christmas greetings.

She will be missed.

We tried to make some plans for our fall program. We do not usually meet in the summer so if the weather stays nice we thought it would be fun to be outdoors again.

October will be our annual Medisterpolse dinner.

Judy Jensen has invited us to her home for this meal.

Our next meeting will be held on September 8 with the destination to be decided. We wish everyone a happy summer.

111th ANNIVERSARY OF NORTHSTAR LODGE CELEBRATED Six Danish Sisterhood Sisters joined together on June 3, 2018, at Liberty Lanes in Sandusky to celebrate the 11th anniversary of our Northstar Lodge #100. Two husbands and a daughter of one of the members were also in attendance.

They decided to change the July meeting to Wednesday, July 18 at Hope Lutheran Church at noon.

23rd Scandinavian Midsummer Festival Jun, 23 – 24, 2018 Thousands of visitors visited the Scandinavian Community Centre this year to celebrate the traditions and festivities of Scandinavian Midsummer. It was a beautiful sunny weekend of entertainment for the whole family with many fun-filled activities, children’s games, on-stage performances, Market Place, Viking Village, raising the May Pole, cultural displays, Scandinavian food including a pancake breakfast and the most fun was the famous wife-carrying contest - and later many visited the ’Beer Garden’ and enjoyed Danish sandwiches and hot dogs.

The Danish Sisterhood, Lodge #179, participated in this annual event and we had many visitors to our booth in the Danish tent and sold some æbleskivepander and many other items we had on display.

We handed out our business card, our application forms and other paraphernalia to quite a few interested in our Danish Sisterhood and we were grateful for the ‘promotional kit’ we received from National.

A lot of visitors studied our Denmark Map

with interest and many tickets by donation went into the draw for our big beautiful Danish Basket – with all items donated by the Sisters in Lodge #179. Sold a few of the items we had on display.

Greetings from the “Bluewater Mermaids” Lodge #184 Sarnia, Ontario/ Port Huron, MI Summer has arrived and we will be celebrating Canada Day July 1st and Independence Day July 4th on both sides of the St. Clair River, being our border.

Only 6 months until Christmas, imagine.

Last December we got together at a Sarnia restaurant. We were 11 Sisters who enjoyed a nice lunch and our sister Jonna showed photos from her daughter (also a sister) Julie’s wedding in September.

We have been meeting monthly with an average attendance of 10 sisters sharing stories and Danish connections. Very insightful and thought provoking.

Our president Johnna shared some Fun Facts about Denmark.

Two of our sisters gave a presentation about Denmark from someone who came from there (Jonna) and one who went there from here (Monica, she lived in DK for 6 years) at an “Open Forum” session at a Sarnia church. This created a lot of discussion. An interested person came to our March meeting and may be joining our lodge.

who had gone all-out entertaining and feeding us.

National treasurer Carol Faruolo was present and we had Nels Hansen from Greenville entertaining us with music and stories during the dinner.

In June we were pleased to have 3 people from Detroit , one long time Detroit lodge member, her daughter and sister come to Sarnia to visit with us after just returning from a visit to family in Denmark.

For the program of the day, Monica gave us the history of the Danish Monarchy.

Update from Sisterhood Lodge #102, Des Moines, IA Plans were made for our Sisterhood brunch at our April meeting. We also made plans to hold a bake sale in connection with Luther Memorial’s rummage sale. Diann Weinman read some delightful articles from a favorite author, Nora Ephon. She had researched and told us about a new statue in Copenhagen titled, “I Am Queen Mary”.

Our May Brunch was held in a new location with good attendance. We had fun holding the Danish/American lottery. This gives us a chance to give away our white elephant items. We tried something new this month by holding our meeting during the day and at a restaurant. This allowed ladies who work, live out of town, and do not like to drive at night to attend. Janelle Willis from Dike and Kirsten Lundgren were able to attend. We ate, had our meeting, and Kirsten told about how Pentecost was celebrated in Denmark. It was wonderful to see people we had not seen for awhile. Linda Holz gave us detailed information on a national

board meeting. Disaster Relief money was give to SH San Rosa people who lost their home. SH newsletters are now in the archives and our tool kit is online.

There was a good breeze at our June picnic and meeting. This was held in Diann Weinman’s backyard with her beautiful flowers, good food, and great fellowship. Three girl toddlers were there with their mothers which added to our enjoyment.

Sue Fisher and Jenny Rupp were elected to be our delegates to the September district convention in Davenport, Iowa. Several of our members plan to attend the Peter Juhl rock balancing event at the American Danish museum this month. The museum is always a favorite place to visit. We ended the evening with a baby shower for President Christina Hudson. Her baby girl will be born soon. Her sister, Amanda, brought a beautiful cake to share.

Katherine Lodge #20, Kenosha, WI Updates and Events April was quite the fun month for the sisters of Katherine Lodge when they were taken back to their childhoods with a presentation on the History of Lego. Member Anna Nielsen presented a PowerPoint on all things Lego. Members were given different types of Legos to play with during the presentation and the snacks were all Lego themed from jello Legos, hard candy Legos to a giant Lego cake.

This summer has been slow and relaxing with our short meeting in May that included a recap on the Midwest District Convention complete with the presentation that was shared at the convention. Sadly in June our Summer Solstice Bonfire was cancelled due to more than 8 inches of rain that fell in the weeks leading up to the celebration.

Upcoming: In August, our lodge will be celebrating our 126th Anniversary celebration with a dinner at Casa Capri in Kenosha, WI on August 12 at 4:30pm. Reservations with payment and menu choice must be mailed by August 1 to Marge Orth 6127 Prairie Circle, Racine WI 53406. Menu selections include: Pasta Con Broccoli and Cauliflower, Butterfield Open Face Tenderloin steak (choice

of pasta or fries), Center cut Pork Chops (choice of pasta or potato), Chicken Casa Capri (lightly breaded and sautéed with mushrooms over pasta), or Salmon filet with potatoes and vegetables.

All meals will include salad, coffee or tea. Cost is $25.00.

News from Princess Marie Lodge #86 Philadelphia February Lodge Meeting was hosted by Eve Kramp on February 17--Fastelavn was the celebration at our February Lodge Meeting. After completing a short business meeting, we all picked a favorite hat for the occasion. Some of our braver and more creative sisters came in costumes and readied themselves for the festivities. Eve gave us plenty to feast on---Homemade Ham and Potato soup, Tortellini soup, fresh rolls and butter. Second course began with ham and cheese open faced sandwiches with a variety of condiments to compliment the sandwich. Plenty of sweets, cakes, candy and chocolate covered strawberries filled our bellies.

Fastelavn, a very old tradition in Denmark dating back more than 500 years, was the last feast before the 40 days fast prior to the Easter celebration. Today in Denmark Fastelavn, a prelent carnival tradition is mainly a celebration for the children. Our Danish born sisters shared their stories of Fastelavn celebrations in Denmark going from house to house asking for candy, dressing up in costumes, smacking barrels and eating sweet buns, better known as Fastelavnboller.

It was Bente’s Birthday on Saturday which gave us all another reason to celebrate. Several birthday songs were sung in Danish for Bente, all the sisters signed a Birthday Card along with a gift. All of us American born Danes are learning plenty of Danish songs, phrases and customs

at our Lodge Meetings! Hun Skal Leve Hurra Hurra and Tyllykke med Fodselsdagen as well as Fastelavn and Fastelavnboller were the key Dansk words this month.

March Lodge Meeting was hosted by Lizzie on March 17--After completing a short business meeting we all settled around the table for lunch. Nestled amongst a wooded area with the sounds of a stream just outside we enjoyed the delicious Chicken Chili Lizzie prepared, spiced to perfection complimented with fresh Cornmeal Muffins.

A cornucopia of art created from wood, stained glass, and needlepoint as well as porcelain figurines and ethnic dolls from countries Lizzie and her late husband Walter traveled uniquely displayed throughout her home stimulated plenty of conversation throughout the afternoon.

It may have been winter outside, but inside Lizzie’s home was plenty of hygge and the sweet smell of Aebleskivers being prepared. Beginning with the butter, we melted a small slice of butter in the Aebleskiver pan, we then filled our Aebleskiver pans with the correct amount of batter.

Inger Siemers showed all of us when and how to turn the Aebleskiver in the pans creating a perfectly browned Aebleskiver. Oh, how sweet and good our Aebleskiver tasted!

With several of us attending the 90th EGC convention in Groton, CT, it was decided to skip the regularly scheduled April meeting. Our lodge hosted the Friday night reception with wine and cheese which was well attended. It was nice to see everyone enjoying each other and reuniting with old friends and making new friends.

Saturday morning the convention began with the traditional opening ceremony followed by convention business. Plenty of time in the after-

noon to explore the town of Mystic where we enjoyed a leisurely lunch followed by shopping.

An old-fashioned shopping village contained our favorite store, Bestemors, loaded with Danish imports. We returned to the hotel for a fabulous banquet, installation of new officers and the raffles!

The Faroe Islands

by Annette Lind, Milwaukee Lodge #15 “Adrift in the whirling rhythmic North Atlantic Sea, a different world lingers. A place like no other on earth. An idyllic escape, peacefully set among lush green valleys, imposing basalt cliffs, grand treeless moorlands and waterfalls plunging directly into the wind-whipped ocean. Unfathomable beauty, mysteriously tucked away like a figment of a child’s imagination.”

This is a quote for an article I found online entitled “Europe’s Best Kept Secret.” It is talking about the Faroe Islands.

It was just over a year ago that the Faroe Islands began to pop up in my life. I had heard of the islands before, I knew they were somehow related to Denmark, but I couldn’t even have found them on a map.

Then last summer on a trip to Denmark while visiting with my cousin’s son Lars Bo and his wife and family in Silkeborg, they told about the amazing holiday they had enjoyed on the Faroe Islands. No more than a month after getting back to Wisconsin, while looking on Ravelry, a knitting website, again the Faroe Islands made an appearance with beautiful sweater patterns knit from wool from these islands and in patterns referred to as Faroese knitting.

The next encounter was again on the internet. While looking for information on the Roskilde Music Festival, the CNN site had an article entitled Top 16 Festivals. Roskilde was on the list, but also

something called the G! Festival on the Faroe Islands.

Then last month my good stitching friend Ellen sent me an article called “On the Sheep Islands” from the Piecework magazine. It was all about a knitting festival held in the Faroe Islands. That was enough. I needed to learn more about these islands that seemed to be knocking at the windows of my mind.

The Faroe Islands are an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Their name comes from the Danish word Færøerne which comes from an Old Norse word for sheep. There are approximately 70,000 sheep on the 18 jagged volcanic islands that make up this country. The human population is just over 50,000. Hence the “sheep Islands” referred to in the Piecework article.

The islands are an archipelago located between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic.

They are about half way between Iceland and Norway. A rugged landscape with a cold, wet and windy climate which, because of the nearness of the Gulf Stream, seldom goes below freezing, but according to what I read has a wind chill not to be ignored.

They have been under Norwegian/Danish control since 1388. When Norway broke away from Denmark in 1814, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland remained Danish possessions. They had their own parliament until 1816 when it was abolished. Denmark governed the islands as a Danish amt (county). The parliament was reinstated in 1851, but functioned mainly in an advisory capacity until 1948.

There has always been an independence movement on the islands, and at the end of WWII on September 14, 1946 there was a vote for secession. A narrow majority voted to secede, but it could not be agreed as to how to interpret and implement the departure. In 1948 the status of the Faroe Islands changed from a county to a country in the Kingdom of Denmark.

Islanders are still split between independence and remaining

a part of the Danish Kingdom. They maintain a high degree of self governance, but they are supported by a financial subsidy from Denmark who supplies military defense, the police department, the justice department, currency and management of foreign affairs.

Faroese is their first language. It is one of the smallest of the Germanic languages and is most similar to Icelandic and Old Norse. Danish is taught in the schools and is used by the government for public relations.

Because the Faroe Islands are isolated by their location, a great deal of their traditional culture remains. There was a written form of Faroese, but after the Reformation in 1538 the ruling Norwegians outlawed its use in schools, churches and official documents. This allowed for a rich oral tradition in which poems, history, stories and ballads were passed down to the next generations. Eventually in the 19th century the words were written down.

Another tradition of the Faroe Islanders that has been handed down for centuries is the Grindadrop. This is a pilot whale hunt that to this day begins in early spring and continues through the summer as the pilot whales pass by the Faroe Islands on their journey.

The earliest mention of this hunt is found in a Faroese book of law from 1298. It is a noncommercial whale hunt organized by the community. The hunt provides a source of local traditional food.

For years there has been a national debate about this hunt. Many Faroese consider whale meat an important part of their food culture and history.

Animal rights group protesters consider the hunt cruel and unnecessary in the modern world.

Sheep are an integral part of the islands and have been for centuries. The sheep are mainly cream-colored, but many have areas of brown and black. The sheep supply meat for the islanders and wool for their beautiful sweaters.

As I found on Ravelry, the style of knitting native to these island is call Faroese knitting. Generally the garments consist of only two colors—traditionally cream/white and black or brown, reflecting the coloring of the sheep. Carry over of yarn to change colors is limited to five stitches. This practice determines the patterns. Traditional patterns are often identified by area or in some cases by family.

It is said that when the men of the islands returned from being at sea, their waiting women could identify them while still on the water by the patterns and colors of their sweater.

The article from Piecework, written by Kathy

Troup, a journalist from Scotland who visited the island for their knitting festival, shares the following history of Faroese wool. “In the middle of the eighteenth century, woolen products were the main traded goods in the Faroe Islands, and most homes were involved in producing them. When the seafaring men were at home they usually carded and spun the wool, which the women knitted. At that time, with a population of about 5,000 people, the islands were exporting more that 100,000 pairs of knitted socks a year. A century later, the population had ‘soared’ to about 8,000 and the islanders were exporting the same number of sweaters. It’s no wonder that at one time, wool was known as ‘Faroese gold.’”

Troup wrote in the article that thanks to the revival of interest in knitting, the beautiful Faroese yarns are now readily available from companies such as Sirri, Snældan and Navia. The wools are now also available in many colors. The wool is high in lanolin, and since lanolin is often considered self-cleaning, they seldom need a washing and are instead hung outside in the air to freshen them. Information on the knitting festival (Bindifestivalurin) can be found online.

The more I read about these islands, the more I wanted to make a visit. The best time to go is from June to August. They have up to 22 hours of daylight during the summer. Winter is dark and stormy, but if you bring the Danish hygge with you, it could be nice, especially if you enjoy fermented lamb and fish???

The capital city of Tórshavn is only a one hour flight from Reykjavik or a two hour flight from Copenhagen. Once there their tourism site suggests multiple not-to-miss sites. The following quote interested me. “Of the many scenic hikes throughout the islands, several call for special attention. On the island of Eysturoy, there’s a nearly 3,000-foot peak named Slættaratindur. Supposedly, on a clear day, you can see all the way to Iceland.

Meanwhile, Mykines (population 10) makes for an excellent day trip. Here, you’ll hike past a bustling puffin colony out to a beautiful lighthouse that’s framed against cliffs.”

If you are not ready to add the Faroe Islands to your bucket list just yet, be sure to go online and look at some of the beautiful pictures from this little country. I am glad it did not stop popping up in my life, forcing me to read about it and marvel at the beautiful landscape of this other country in the Kingdom of Denmark.

The Danish flag is known as the Dannebrog or Danish Cloth. Dannebrog means ‘the flag of the Danes’ or ’the red flag.’

According to legend, the flag descended from the sky during the Battle of Lyndanisse in Estonia in June 1219.

While the battle was raging on, the troops were beginning to lose heart and strength.

Then the Dannebrog fell from the sky and the King showed it to his troops, filling them all with courage and the battle was won.
