Summer is here!!!! I’m sure many of you are experiencing the heat, although I keep an eye on Denmark and it’s been raining! We’ve hosted many young people in our home, and the weather here seems to be the common thing they are all excited about. For me, I can even handle the rain just to have a little time in the homeland, it’s just part of the package.

While many of the lodges are not meeting during the summer, it is a good time to start making plans for the fall and winter months. For what will be the 5th year now, my lodge has hosted a “Mad Hatter’s Tea” party. It’s a lot of fun, and a great opportunity to invite family and friends. Our members make the tiny sandwiches and delicious sweets so that each guest enjoys one of each. We have 3 different teas they can choose from, and the fun part is having members “host” a table. The hostess brings their finest tea set and decorations for their table. There is a contest for the best table and believe me, it is difficult to judge (so we let the guests vote, but they can’t vote for their own). We also have a contest for the best hat (vintage, and fun are the two categories). The best part seems to be the raffle. We always have beautiful Danish porcelains, plates and gift baskets that are motivation to buy a few extra tickets. We have some very generous people that contribute the food items and raffle prizes, which is very appreciated. I’ve got to say this is our best event of the year, well attended and offers a lot of exposure for the lodge. Now to capture that exposure and work the membership drive into this, which will be the focus this year!

If any one is interested in hosting a party like this, please don’t hesitate to reach out, and I can provide more details on how we do it here in Petaluma. Have fun with your planning and events, and don’t forget to share!

Dear Sisters, The months are going by fast. It’s already July! I hope that all of you are having a lovely summer so far. I’ve been on the road quite a bit this summer, traveling to visit family and friends, going to events, and more–and it’s not about to stop!

With plenty of time on the road, I also have had plenty of time to think about the Danish Sisterhood and the Newsletter. When I’m traveling, I often wonder what my Sisters from all of our chapters are up to. I’ve loved receiving the latest reports from district conventions and news from lodges. Some have been celebrating Danish holidays, others have been getting together for fun activities, and many just getting together for regular meetings (also a ton of fun). We’d love to hear your latest news and updates from your lodges and districts. And if you have any upcoming events, send them our way!

Since summer is a wonderful time to get that traveling urge taken care of, I’m sure some of you have been exploring new places recently.

If you’ve travelled to Denmark recently, or to a Danish-related place or festival, please send us stories and photos. Share your experiences and interests with your Sisters, we’d love it!

I continue to love working on the Danish Sisterhood News and am always looking for inspiration and feedback. Let’s continue to share our love for our heritage and organization by sharing with each other.

These four 30’ statues were unveiled in October 1995 on the coast of Esbjerg. The piece is called “Man Meets the Sea” and was created by Svend Wiig Hansen. The sculptures were raised to celebrate Esbjerg’s 100th anniversary as an independent municipality in 1994.

News from HAABETS FREMTID LODGE 78 TROY, NEW YORK

We had 8 Sisters along with some of the husbands gather for lunch and meeting on June 10th, at Testo’s Restaurant in Troy, NY. We have been blessed with some warmer and sunny weather lately. We will however need to cancel our meetings during the summer months as we do not have any way to host an outside venue.

We have been trying to come up with some new ideas to promote our Danish heritage and have some fun as well. We decided to look into a train ride from Saratoga Springs to North Creek, hopefully to take place in lieu of our September meeting on the 9th. This is a fun adventure and a good suggestion. We received several good ideas from our Sisters and will try to put some of them to use later in the season.

After completing our business meeting Marge Wheeler presented a little talk on Saint Hans Aften. This celebration will take place in Denmark on June 23rd. We have not thought much about this holiday in the last several years, so it was good to remember the fun and meaning of this holiday. It is a celebration of midsummer or summer solstice and the traditions surrounding this celebration are unique to the Danish people. This holiday was combined with the feast of Saint John the Baptist. .The Danish people will gather before sunset on the coast or shore line of a lake, feast, sing and enjoy the bonfires until early morning hours. They will burn an effigy of a witch symbolizing the threat of bad luck or evil being sent away.

Summer to all!

We then proceeded to craft our own raffia “witches” as a reminder of this day. Whether they are burned at a bonfire or used just to remember this holiday, everyone had a great time. We have enclosed a picture of our Sisters holding their finished products.

At this time, our next meeting is scheduled for September 9th and hopefully we will be enjoying a train tide in the Adirondacks. Happy

2017 Eastern General Committee Convention Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | March 31-April 2, 2017 The 2017 EGC Convention hosted by Lodge # 86 in Glen Mills began March 31st with a welcome reception for delegates, EGC officers and guests.

We welcomed our sisters from the Northeast and Florida with a meet and greet provided by Lodge # 86. Talented and local piano player and singer from West Chester PA entertained us on Friday evening with many familiar show tunes while we mingled and reconnected with old friends. Our meeting room was transformed into a showcase of Danish items displayed beautifully in red and white colors. During the convention we tried to win our favorite piece buying tickets and placing our tickets in the red containers in front of each piece.

Chinese Auction winners as well as Raffle and EGC basket winners were announced Saturday evening.

We thank all of our EGC lodges and sisters for their most generous donations to our Grand Prize Raffle, EGC basket raffle and Chinese Auction! Without all of you we would not have been able to have such a successful convention!

We gathered for breakfast at the hotel Saturday morning where we enjoyed coffee and conversation with sisters from Lodge #86 and our sisters from the other EGC lodges attending the convention. Five of our lodges sent delegates to represent their lodge at the convention. We thank the delegates and lodge members of Freden Lodge #12, Freja Lodge #36, Habbets Fremtid Lodge #78, Princess Marie Lodge #86 and Sunshine Lodge #181 for taking the time to be with us in Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately four lodges were not able to attend the convention this year but were represented by appointing a proxy. A roll call of officers, delegates and guests was taken with 26 present at the convention.

On Saturday April 1st at 9 AM we were welcomed by Lodge #86 President Inge Olsen and EGC President Carole Pierorazio. Carole shared with us a few words about past conventions and a reading of the poem “Sisters of the Heart” by Betsy Christensen. We welcomed Julie Morrison, National Vice President of the Danish Sisterhood of America and escorted Julie to the officers’ table. Julie trav-

eled from California to be with us for the weekend.

Proudly we displayed the Princess Marie banner above the officers’ table. Danish and American flags, the Sisterhood Charter and beautiful white table coverings created the tradition we all love about conventions. Celeste Cattie, Danish Sisterhood of America Past President was also escorted and seated at the officers’ table. Inge Darroch was installed as Vice President of the EGC, at the officers meeting the night before. We all recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and sang one verse of America the Beautiful.

After singing our Opening Song to the melody “Der er et Land” Past President, Kim Isager, placed the Symbol on the Constitution, and led us in the opening prayer, followed by the Lord’s Prayer; the convention was opened for business.

A Memorial Service led by Past President Kim Isager moved many of us to tears as delegates from each lodge placed flowers in a vase remem5

bering our lost sisters who have passed. Kim reminded us as members of the Danish Sisterhood you will always be remembered; you will never be forgotten.

Proposals to change any By-laws were read, discussed and voted on. Lodge delegates gave reports summarizing their lodge’s activities throughout the year. Sharing activities and venues for meetings inspired us with new ideas to share with our lodges at home. We admit many of us are aging but we are all devoted and enthusiastic sisters of the heart. We all decided to support scholarship and camp grants with donations to National Camp Grants, Elizabeth Garde Fund, Betsy Hansen Fund and Mildred Sorensen Fund.

We did break for lunch and enjoyed traditional Philadelphia hoagies delivered fresh to our hotel. Philadelphia soft pretzels for snacking and Danish pastries for dessert provided sustenance to us during breaks from convention business. All of our convention committees did an excellent job creating a warm and friendly atmosphere. Lodge #86 is truly blessed to have such a dedicated group of Danish sisters. Conversation was free flowing during the breaks and the entire weekend of meetings.

Social hours and meals gave us a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new friends.

National Board presentation by Julie Morrison stressed the importance of District Conventions.

One question that continues to come up is regarding the lower turnouts at District Conventions. We appreciate all of the suggestions from the National Board and agree yearly conventions are times when sisters connect who otherwise never see each other.

Conventions give us the opportunity to share our ideas with each other. Julie brought many new items in the Marketplace Butikken available for purchase throughout the convention. Thank You Julie, we enjoyed meeting you and happy you were able to attend out convention in Pennsylvania!

Carole expressed to us how wonderful all our nominees for Sister of the Year are and expressed gratittude from the EGC for the wonderful job they have all done for the Danish Sisterhood. The convention was closed with a closing song; the melody was “Lullaby and Good Night.”

After the installation of officers, we traveled back to the hotel for the Raffle and Bingo Game.

The Bingo Game was fun after a weekend of many exciting opportunities to reignite with past friends and sisters. Auction prizes were awarded to many of us who anticipated winning. On Sunday we traveled a short distance to Longwood Gardens. The gardens are beautiful and gave us all a serene ending to our most treasured memory of sisterly love!

A 2017 Yearbook and Danish Sisterhood travel bag were given out to all the delegates. Thank you so much to our Lodge #86 sisters and EGC sisters for helping us make this convention a success!

We hope all who attended had a memorable time at our convention!

Danish Brotherhood/Sisterhood’s 68th PNW Convention Sandman Hotel, Vancouver, BC May 5-6, 2017 Friday May 5th 1st day - Registration took place and all Sisters and Brothers were welcomed to British Columbia. As per Vancouver weather - it was raining but luckily the sun came out for the remaining days and many enjoyed trips around town,

For those who liked to GOLF there was a golf tournament on Friday morning, which was held at ‘Green Acre’.

Before the meetings began we had a Sisterhood Executive Board meeting.

After a bit of socializing and meeting many Sisters and Brothers from previous Conventions, the ‘Joint Opening Ceremony’ began and all the ‘3 National Anthem’s’ were song after the welcome speeches given by the Hosting Brotherhood Lodge #328 President, Peter Jensen and the Sisterhood Lodge #179 President Sandra Alexander.

Then we split up in two separate rooms and our first day meeting began with a welcome from President, Nancy Stangland, who also read the Mission statement and Past President Jannet Tricarico, placed the symbol (our heart) on the Constitution and declared it now open for business.

After the ‘Opening song’ - a Roll call took place of all Officers, Delegates and Alternates by Secretary, Karen Favero, followed by introduction of National Officers, Sindy Mikkelsen, VP Julie Morrison, Guests, Convention Chair and Past National & PNW Presidents were also recognized.

PNW Vice President, Marian Case, read a paragraph of the Bylaws and Chaplain, Karin Plagens, gave the Devotional - and the meeting continued with review of last year’s Minutes, the Bylaws and the Secretary list to be sure all were correct.

Then it was time for the Treasures financial report, bills and correspondence.

The President appointed Committee chairs, Karin Plagens, Nominating and Sandra Alexander, Resolution and their committees.

After a short break we continued with the 5 Delegates reading their Lodge report and Vancouver delegate, Sandra Alexander gave our Lodge #179 report.

The ‘Coin March’ took place and ticket numbers were called and many door prizes donated by all the Lodges were handed out to the lucky winners, after which the 1st day meeting ended around 4:00pm

Now it was time to head for the for Hospitality room where free flowing wine and alcohol was served and the socializing continued...

At 6:00pm a No Host Social hour took place before the Dinner “Kroaften’ was served followed by wonderful music entertainment by John Parsons.

Second day – nice sunny and warm day - the morning started with browsing in Helene’s boutique where lots of items were for sale all donated by the Lodges. Also bidding continued on the ‘Silent Auction’s’ many huge baskets that were donated by each Sisterhood Lodge.

The business meeting started with again placing the heart on the open Constitution and a salute to the 3 Flags singing 2 Anthems.

Again a roll call of all Officers, Delegates and Alternates took place and then it was time for the Memorial Service by the District Chaplain, where a red carnation was placed for each deceased member in the past year and a ‘tribute was read in memory of each departed Sister.

The National Officer, Sindy Mikkelsen, gave her presentation and news about the DSS newsletter, the Marketplace Boutique, the Constitution, a new Denmark trip in 2018 and a new Historian, Amy Larsen, who will start Sep. 01, 2017 and will be in charge of our archives now located in the Danish American Museum in Elk Horn, Iowa.

After the coffee break where the Hosting Lodge had baked and contributed dozen of delicious cookies, the meeting continued with approving the Minutes as read.

1st Trustee, Patti Olsen, gave the Trustee report and all the financial statements were in order and the books signed by 2nd and 3rd Trustee as well.

The Resolution Committee announced some changes to the Bylaws, which were voted on and approved – followed by the Nominating

Committee announcing their selection of new PNW Officers. Only one change from previous year: Karen Favero, after many years of being Treasurer/Secretary stepped down and her position will be taken over by Emily Olsen Lodge #40.

President gave a short report and then named the Chaplain, Karin Plagens, Lodge #75, Historian, Emily Olsen Lodge #40, Publicity, Charlene Jensen, Lodge #81 for year 2018 for the balance of year 2017 Jannet Tricarico will stand in as Publicity for Charlene Jensen due to family issues.

Another coin march was done and again many prizes were handed out and the lucky winners of the Silent Auction’s many baskets were announced.

Several announcements were given regarding the evening’s Installation and next year’s Convention which will be held in Enumclaw Apr. 6-7, 2018.

The meeting ended around 12:00 noon with closing the constitution and singing the ‘Closing song’ .

The afternoon was free – some had booked the tour to the ‘Longtable Distillery others simply enjoyed the sunshine and took walking tours and shopping all over Vancouver downtown.

After returning it was again time for some

drinks in the Hospitality room before dressing for the Dinner Banquet where the awards for the golf tournament, the Outstanding Lodge Sisters awards and many Donation cheques were given to various organizations.

The hosting Brotherhood Lodge #328 celebrated their 86th Birthday during the weekend and the Sisterhood Lodge #179 their 46th Anniversary this year as well. The evening ended with dancing to the ‘Silver Stars’.

It was very busy days and a great conference. It was nice to see so many ‘old’ Friends again. Kudos to the entire Vancouver team for all their hard work and making this convention another great gathering.

Tivoli Virtual Lodge #300 Musings WHAT’S IN YOUR DRAWERS? by 300 member Susanne Hohlen Monticello, Minnesota shohlen@uslink.net

We have all gone through it (no, I am not referring to menopause: moving, downsizing, looking at our “stuff” and sometimes not sure what to do with our belongings. Should we keep it or part with it? Do we have children who will cherish it? Is it worth having a garage sale or give to charities? There is some truth to the saying “One man’s junk is another person’s treasure”.

Not sure about your closets, but mine are a reflection of a long life with lots of stuff accumulated over the years. And for the record, I am not a pack rat by any means.

Being Danish, I have quite a few things with sentimental value. Some items from my own childhood include my first set of booties, silver-covered as a gift from my parents for my confirmation (and stuffed with a few hundred kroner bills, which I later used for a trip to Germany as a summer exchange student) and a silver windmill piggy bank, although I don’t remember ever emptying it. I have been looking for my baptismal silver spoon to no avail – apparently never had a taste of that flavor in my life.

At times, we have to take inventory of our life. Not only mentally, but also of our worldly possessions. I was looking for something this morning and ended up going through some boxes. Amazing what you will find. I was somewhat overcome with nostalgia, many reminders of specific points in time taking me down memory lane.

I am a very visual person and decided it was time for a practical approach, placing in plain view all the things I felt I no longer was attached to and could conceivably part with. Boy oh boy, not so easy after all. I left things on the floor in my office, decided to tackle the vacuum cleaner to get my thoughts of the subject for a little bit. Yes, cleaning can be good therapy.

I know it is only Christmas once a year over a short span of approximately 30 days.

By then I have had my fill of Father Christmas. I have a nice selection of Danish Christmas decorations which have brought me and my late husband much joy over the years, and still do.

But, do I need to have all 30 plus ornaments put up in order to find the yuletide spirit and my ceiling looking like a droopy gold mine?

No. Time for some of these ornaments to go find another home.

I am a huge proponent of Holmegaard glass ware, good solid craftmanship and design. And the parting process in this was also relatively easy as I have lost my taste a little bit for Irish Coffee. So far so good. I was beginning to feel more relieved and empowered.

A towel on one of my shelves was holding three small landscape paintings from my parents’ home. I clearly see the living room in front of me and the wall they would hang on. So much for feeling empowered – although the style and colors are not my style, I carefully wrapped them back in the towel for a later time.

There is some truth to the saying “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure”. But if in doubt, listen to your heart. Although I have some nieces and nephews who might be interested in some of auntie’s belongings, I think I will hold on to my set of silver covered booties and my silver windmill. My drawers are not yet full.

2018 Denmark Island Tour Thursday: 9/20/18 - 9:30 am Copenhagen - Tour start, welcome Itinerary meeting at Hotel WakeUp in Borgergade near Kgl. Nytorv and Nyhavn. Load the bus and start for Jutland. Overnight at Hotel Jutlandia, Frederikshavn. Dinner at 7 pm.

Saturday: 9/29/18 - Bornholm tour (Tegn, Sandvig, Allinge, Hammershus, Rønne, Østerlars, Østermarie and the south side of Bornholm). Dinner at 6:30 pm, Hotel Siemsens restaurant.

Sunday: 9/30/18 - depart Bornholm, 2 pm arrival in Copenhagen at Wake Up Hotel.

Friday: 9/21/18 - 9:00 am - Depart for ferry to Laesoe. Tour Laesoe Spa, Laeso Salt production.

Overnight at Hotel Laerkely and Østergaards B&B. Saturday: 9/22/18 - Island tour; Museum of Laesoe.

Island history/life presentation at dinner by Laesoe residents.

Sunday: 9/23/18 - Travel by ferry to Frederikshavn; on to the island of Samsoe, which is 100% selfsufficient by renewable energy. Overnight at Hotel Isle Made and summerhouses close to hotel.

Dinner at Hotel Ilse Made.

Monday: 9/24/18 - Tour north side of Samsoe and towns of Nordby, Ballbjerg, Mårup and Langør.

Visit Samsoe Vinyard. Dinner at 6 pm.

Tuesday: 9/25/18 - Tour Samsoe Energy Academy; visit a lighthouse, the Manor Vadstrup 1771 and towns of Tranebjerg and Balle.

Wednesday: 9/26/18 - Depart for 7 am ferry to Kalundborg, on to Copenhagen; over the bridge to Malmoe, Sweden. Tour Malmoe and Ystad. Ferry from Ystad to Rønne, Bornholm arriving 7:50 pm (dinner on the ferry). Stay four nights at Hotel Siemsens Gaard on the Baltic Sea.

Requesting/processing a funeral benefit for a certificate holding member.

Address Changes

We felt it would be helpful to the Lodge secretaries and member’s families if I posted the instructions for requesting a funeral benefit.

When one of our certificate holding members passes away, their beneficiaries are entitled to their funeral benefit. The member must have been a current/active member (dues paid) at the time of their death for the benefit to be valid.

The funds will be issued to the beneficiary noted in the member’s record with the National Secretary. If the noted beneficiary passed away prior to the member, the check will be issued to the Estate of…

Many lodge secretaries/treasurers manage the request to process a funeral benefit for the family.

The process:

• Send a certified copy of the member’s

death certificate

• Provide contact information of the bene ficiary or executor of the estate

• National Secretary verifies valid mem bership and records the members’

passing
