Resolutions of change and/or improvement are underway for many. I hope that you and your family had a safe and enjoyable holiday season, and are now ready to push up your sleeves, get a little dirty and make those changes.

For most of our lodges, plans are in the making for installation of officers. This can also be a stressful time for lodges, trying to determine who is willing to fill an office. So many lodges, for lack of interest by others, keep the same officers, year after year. My own lodge is no exception to this situation. There are also lodges that wonder if they should even continue because they can’t fill all the chairs. I’d like to reassure those that have not asked, and several that have asked, but the filling of chairs is not a National requirement. We have many lodges, and even districts, that combine offices such as Secretary/Treasurer duties, for which we are grateful to the wonderful members that step up and do that double duty. Sometimes you must be creative to make things work. All I ask is that you not let the formal structure restrict your lodges ability to enjoy each other, to remain intact, and build the lodge to a level that generates fun.

Sitting in my position, the lodges that seem most successful are those that have a lot of social activities, crafts and culture related functions. They also have a common key ingredient… communication! The lodges that succeed keep their members engaged.

They don’t just assume the members don’t care because they don’t attend, they invite everyone, every time, to everything. Modern communications keep many members aware (email, text, etc), but simple post cards, notes, or the old-fashioned telephone work too.

My own lodge looked at what use to work, what really brought the members out in larger numbers back in the day. This was a reflection done in conjunction with the Brotherhood members as well. The answer for our lodge was membership was active when meetings were short, the Brothers played poker after, and the Sisters had things like Bingo or crafts. what was big back then was the bar. Being able to have a beer, glass of wine, or cocktails. So… we’re going to start small, and have it in homes for a bit, but the Brothers will host poker, the Sisters will host bingo/ crafts, and we will offer “beverages”. We do hope it brings back some of the fun times and our younger families again. I’ll let you know how that goes.

If your lodge has a history of the good old days you’d like to share, and especially if you try to recreate that, please do share.

Dear Sisters, Happy New Year!

As this new year begins, let us look forward to all of the wonderful things that are to come, and be thankful for all of the things in the past that have brought us to this point.

I am looking forward to yet another year serving in my role as the Danish Sisterhood News editor. I am so thankful that I have already been able to help with the newsletter and meet so many of you sisters for two years now! This year, I plan to continue making the DSN as best as it possibly can be–celebrating our Danish heritage and culture and our wonderful organization of Sisters. As always, YOU are all what make the Sisterhood what it is and I look forward to hearing from many more of you this coming year!

November and December Amber Lodge #186 Activities The Holiday Season was a time of making beautiful memories together for Amber Lodge #186 in Brainerd, Minnesota.

Amber Lodge #186 members started out the season with baking cookies together at the November meeting. The meeting was held at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd. The members and guests enjoyed baking a variety of Danish cookies that included peppernodders, sugar, and spritz cookies.

On Saturday December 2, Lodge members Barb Wenschlag, Judy Anderson, and Dottie Bisted participated at the International Winter Festival. It was held Dottie Bisted and Joni Hill getting light Nealna Gylling clears a tray of spritz cookies to cool. at the Brainerd Arboretum. Our Lodge peppernodder ready for the oven. appreciates all the time that these sisters put into the International Winter Festival.

This gave our community more exposure to the Danish Sisterhood. The Winter Festival was held during a time that cars drive through the Arboretum to see light displays. Children as well as adults participated in the Danish activities such as making heart baskets and stars. Attendees also learned about Legos and Hans Christian Andersen.

The Lodge’s annual Christmas party was hosted on Saturday, December 9 by Barb WenBarb Wenschlag making aebleskiver at the Winter Festival at the schlag. It was held in her new home. 13 sisterInternational Winter Festival. hood members and guests were in attendance.

Danmarks Dotre, Lodge #90, Lincoln, NE

We are back on board again and hoping all had a great holiday season with family and friends wherever they may be. We had a white Christmas here in Nebraska.

Our Lodge has gained several new members since our last writing. Those new members in 2017 are: Mary Brass, JaRam, Lymae and Leland Faugn, Mary Lou Andersen, and Mary Brass.

New officers for 2018 are Past President, Ingrid Hansen; President, Joan Tomlinson White; Vice President, Vicki Bousquet; Secretary, Jane Nyffeler; Treasurer, Donna Hansen; First Trustee, Marie Johnson; Second Trustee, Fran Freeman; and Third Trustee, Mary Brass; Get Well and Sympathy, Ingrid Hansen; Birthdays, Donna Thomas; Calling Committee, Fran Freeman and Ingrid Hansen; Correspondent, Olga Nielsen.

Other new members are Jane Nyffeler, joined in 2013; Fran Freeman, Kathy McLaughlin and Donna Thomas, joined in 2016.

Danish Sisterhood member, Dorothy Ekblad, deceased in 2017.

In the year 2017, the idea of a “Danish Moment” was created. We set aside about five minutes to share information from or about Denmark. This will help us be more knowledgeable about Denmark!

Joan told us about Danish surnames; Marie Johnson about her family Danish heritage; Mary

Contreras about Danish Legos; Kathy McLaughlin brought a family book of interesting happenings and family geneaology; Donna Thomas about family genealogy; and Mary Brass about a Danish Lincoln Journalist.

In March, we made and served Danish Aebelskivers. In June, we showed a DVD winner, best short documentary, “The Simple Gift of Walnut Grove.” It is the story of Hans Hansen as told by his son, 96-yearold Walter Hansen. Hans emigrated from Denmark in 1899 and built his family farm from native timber near West Branch, Iowa. This DVD is available to buy at the Danish Immigration Museum in Elk Horn, Iowa.

In August we had our annual picnic in the backyard of Vicki and Mike Bousquet. In September was the celebration of our Sisterhood’s 112th Anniversary.

In October we made an out-of-town trip to Elkhorn, Nebraska. Went to the Little Scandinavian store.

Aebelskivers were served out on the sidewalk. The Omaha Folklore group danced in the street. In December we had our annual Christmas Party. In the meeting, JaRon, Lymae and Leland Faugn and Mary Lou Anderson were initiated into Danish Sisterhood.

Members brought Danish sandwiches and other food for the occasion. A children’s book was read, we sang Christmas songs and had a $5 gift exchange.

News from Lodge #102, Des Moines, Iowa We always look forward to our only out to eat event in October. Christina Hudson’s son William joined us. It is fun watching our little ones grow up.

November is a busy month planning the events ahead. We had 20 members plus one baby present. Our present board has agreed to remain the same for next year. Jeanie Clausen Clark, a new member, was with us. Christina again read about something Danish. This time it was about meatballs, frikadellar! We voted to send $100 to the SH disaster fund to help our sisters in CA and elsewhere.

Carol Rudisill gave a report on the Danish American Heritage Society conference held near the Chicago area. This was attended by many from our area and people from all over the U.S. and Denmark. It is held about every three years. Most of the speakers were from Denmark. Our keynote speaker was Danish Chef Trine Hahnemann. At one session she taught us how to make Smorrebrod and that is what we ate that evening. Our Saturday evening gala dinner speaker was Ambassador Lars Gert Lose. There were 40 sessions focusing on the arts, Danish American culture, literature, theology, philosophy, cooking, and excursions to the Chicago Danish Home, and Midwest Groundcovers. New films were introduced and there was much music and singing. Linda Holz ended our evening by sharing her beautiful pictures of her trip to Norway and Sweden. We always enjoy traveling through the eyes of others.

NE/CO Danish Sisterhood District Convention & NE Brotherhood State Convention, Held in Grand Island, NE, September 29-30, 2017 The weekend of September 29 and 30 was one of those perfect fall weekends in Nebraska.

Many of us traveled to Grand Island, Nebraska, for this year’s District Convention. All were welcomed by our host, Danish Brotherhood Lodge No. 211 of Grand Island. We certainly appreciated the planning and hard work that goes into hosting a convention.

Friday evening is deemed a social affair which gave us an opportunity to rekindle friendships and make new acquaintances. We were introduced to special guest—Karin Wasler, DSS National Trustee from Los Angeles. She asked the question: “What does it mean to be a Dane?” With audience participation, and no hesitation, several answered: work ethic, food, heritage, happiness and community giving. That was a good start, I’m sure we could have added more to the list.

Two more special guests, Rasmus Thogersen and his wife Jennifer also joined us that evening. Rasmus is the new Executive Director of the Museum of Danish America, in Elk Horn, Iowa. Dr. John Mark Neilsen, has retired this year as Director. He will certainly be missed for his undaunting dedication to the Museum.

John Mark is leaving the Museum in good hands.

We look forward to getting to know Rasmus, who seems very enthusiastic about his new job.

Rasmus stated many facts about the Museum; one in particular, is that the Museum has 30,000 artifacts. As we all know, some of our Danish Sisterhood memorabilia was recently donated to the Museum. We are eager to see these items on display. While they continue to sort and catalog these things into the system, we hope to see them in the future. In our discussion, it was stated that by the next DSS National Convention we may see a special display of our memorabilia and history. Sounds exciting!

Our Danish Sisterhood meeting was called to order on Saturday morning. I always enjoy the various lodge reports given by our delegates and alternates. Those present were Ellen Lodge #21, Denver, CO; Western Star #113, Grand Island, Danish Sisterhood News, January 2018

NE and Danmarks Dotre #90, Lincoln, NE. Danner Lodge #6, Omaha, NE was not present, their report was read. We can all relate to our Danish fellowship, gathering for meetings, food, community giving, and our many projects. We are always learning about and promoting our Danish culture, making new friends and gaining new members.

An aged Charter was draped with a special memorial service acknowledging three Danish members who have passed away since our last district meeting. The lodges shared personal comments and pictures of Delores J. Stueven of Grand Island, Rita Catherine Nielsen of Omaha, and Phil Sorensen of Lincoln. With a special fondness, they will remain in our hearts and will always be remembered.

To raise money for the Sisterhood District treasury, we had a silent auction. Many donated wonderful items and the very lucky ones took them home.

A motion passed, to donate money to the Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn, Iowa; the Danish American Archive and Library in Blair, Nebraska; and the DSS National Camp Grants.

All very deserving of the money that was raised.

When lodges come together for a district convention we always enjoy the opportunity to see our good friends again and share our lodge activities. In addition, we always learn so much from a National DSS officer, who travels to be with us. Karin Wasler’s presentation covered many points of interest. Just to name a few, she outlined funeral benefits and updating beneficiaries, Marketplace Buttiken, an electronic newsletter, our new National Historian Amy Larsen, district conventions, and sending lodge articles to our national newsletter. We enjoyed our many discussions during the convention, and appreciated having a one-on-one with Karin. Thank you Karin for coming to Nebraska!

Update from Lodge #3, Davenport, IA Lodge #3 Davenport, Iowa, wishes all of you a happy, healthy 2018! We will host the Heartland District Convention at the Best Western Plus SteepleGate Inn--100 West 76th Street--Davenport, Iowa 52806 on September 14-16, 2018, more info to follow in the new year.

Our Lodge decorated a Danish Christmas tree with handmade ornaments of red & white for the 2nd annual Festival of Trees at the Clinton County Historical Society Museum in Clinton, Iowa. The trees were on display from December 1-10 and we enjoyed being a part of the celebration.

Our next meeting will be at 11:30am on February 8th at Happy Joe’s in LeClaire, Iowa. Due to the cold, we will not meet in January, but we want to wish all of our Danish families a Happy and Healthy New Year!

HAABETS FREMTID LODGE 78, TROY, NEW YORK Julefest 2017 was a wonderful time together in December. Twenty five of us gathered at Smith’s Restaurant in Cohoes. And while a couple of our members were unable to attend due to illness, we missed them and wish each one a speedy recovery. We began with cheese and crackers and moved onto a complete dinner of beef, pork, or salmon. We finished with Ris a La Mande with warm cherry sauce and homemade Danish cookies. Of course there was a hidden almond and the winner was Patrick Dore. The Julefest was planned by Marilyn Dore and Marge Wheeler and we thank them both for all the time and effort they put into these plans. Woven fabric stars were created by Marge and graced everyone’s place setting.

We enjoyed a game of Danish Lottery led

by Connie Schell which raised $30. We decided to donate this to the fire victims of a huge fire in downtown Cohoes, just the week before.

With some additional donations, our lodge then added to these monies and a total of $100 was given for the fire relief effort.

Next came a new version of the song, “Twelve Days of Christmas”. Connie Schell had reworked some of the words, and also added the danish numbers for this song. We sang of familiar

danish foods and by the time we reached the last verse we were doing well pronouncing these new phrases and everyone enjoyed a good laugh.

Tivoli Virtual Lodge #300 Musings Hello Tivoli Lodge Members,

Thank you to those of you who responded to our Tivoli Lodge survey. We received a solid response (30%) either via mail or the online survey, and were glad to hear from you. Our goal was to learn more about your reasons for joining the Danish Sisterhood, what you’d like to gain from your membership and how we can better serve you. Here is what we learned:

Some of you expressed interested in attending a district convention. The dates of District Conventions are posted on the DSS website calendar and we invite you to consider attending. Each district’s convention is a bit different, but every one is a gathering of Danish-connected folks, and is a good opportunity to connect and make new friends.

Your strongest motivations for joining the Danish Sisterhood were to learn more about Denmark and Danish culture. We will continue Susanne Hohlen’s Tivoli Musings column here in the DSS news. As a native Dane, Susanne provides a unique perspective on living in the US and maintaining her Danish roots. We’re glad you enjoy her column and will keep it coming. For those of you who use social media, we encourage you to join the Tivoli Lodge Facebook group. You’ll get postings of news stories, recipes and reflections about Danish culture.

You are willing to share a bit about yourselves! A number of you are willing to provide us with a brief bio and picture to publish in the DSS news. We’d love to be able to introduce you to each other, and see this as a good way to start. Stay tuned next month for your introduction to a few members!

A high percentage of you (78%) would like to establish contact with other Tivoli Lodge members. Many of you would attend gatherings in your home states, but it’s difficult to arrange such a meeting if you don’t know who else is in your state! Beginning in 2018, we will make available a membership list of Tivoli Lodge members so you can feel free to reach out to each other (only available to Tivoli Lodge members). News from Ellen Lodge #21, Denver, CO Godt Nytår - Happy New Year from our Lodge to yours! We hope that it is off to a great start for all of you.

2017 was another banner year for Ellen Lodge, but you already know that as several of our Sisters wrote articles to the DSN reporting on our endeavors. I pick the story up in September.

Sister Tita Jergensen hosted the September meeting in her beautiful home and as so many times before, she had fixed us a delicious lunch.

We started with the business meeting and being an active Lodge, we never lack for business content and lively discussions. However, President Birgitte Jappe Ross kept things moving and by the time it was over, we had discussed Lodge Meeting minutes, Board Meeting minutes, correspondence, $, Sisters having a difficult time, potential new members, upcoming Nebraska-Colorado District Convention in Grand Island Nebraska, our artifacts, Lodge Charter protection, craft sessions, upcoming craft fair, Lodge Heritage Book updates and one very special birthday, Sister Grethe Jensen turned 100. Congratulations Grethe. So you see, we still have it happening here in Denver.

September 3, 2017 also marked the 125th anniversary for the founding of Ellen Lodge #21 and we couldn’t let that go unnoticed. We had “kransekage” and I gave a presentation called, “Once Upon a Time – How did we get here?”

Trying to answer such questions as, why did all those Danes, 1 out of every 10, leave their homeland in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s? In doing some research, I found a myriad of speculations – but one was particularly interesting. With the farming reform in the late 1700s not just the aristocrats but also regular folks could own land and there just wasn’t enough of it. What were their hopes and dreams? Check out the 1835 “Flight to America” poem by Danish Lyric Poet Christian Winther (1796-1876) which describes the good life in America and H.C. Andersen’s 1836 song, “Brothers, very far from here” also describing paradise. Both pieces of literature are satirical but were essentially used as propaganda to spread the so called Amerikafeberen - America

fever, to encourage emigration from Denmark to America. What did they find in the far-away place called “Amerika”?

Well it wasn’t all rivers of chocolate as promised in the Christian Winther poem or fields of money and springs flowing with champagne as described in H.C. Andersen’s Ellen Lodge celebrates 125 years, Septemsong. What were ber 2017 their lives like once they arrived?

What happened to the country they left? Why was the Danish Sisterhood of America and Ellen Lodge #21 founded? We found some of the answers to these questions. Some of this, we already knew, but a “refresher course” never hurts.

October brought our anEllen Lodge participating in the craft fair, nual restaurant 2017. luncheon, this year hosted by Kathy Hinckley and Malinda Ringo at the historic White Fence Farm. I was in Denmark at the time and was unable to attend but I have heard that a nice time was had by all 16 in attendance. The tables were decorated with Dannebrog and chocolate party favors. Good old-fashioned home cooking, “comfort food” – chicken is the specialty – was served and ice-cream for 9

dessert. A drawing for prizes was a huge success – nobody went home empty handed. Best of all, time with Sisters cannot be beat.

Late September, early October our craft sessions were ramped up as we were trying to get ready for the annual craft fair at the Norwegian Trollheim Lodge. Cross stitch were counted, Kathy Hinkley shares one of her blanket stitch galore, mom’s Trolde. nisse hats and bells attached, pinecones painted, beards, noses, hearts and wings abound. Our President and super crafter, Birgitte Ross leads the way and hosts craft sessions in her home every 3 weeks throughout the year for anyone who wants to come. Some are talented crafters themselves, some of us know how to work a glue gun and a paint brush – with supervision. We take turns bringing a delicious lunch. The social aspect of our craft sessions is phenomenal, but we do also manage to produce items we can sell at the craft fair. This year it took place November 3 and 4 and once again it was a big success. We have been attending for several years and are at a point where customers come to the fair because we are there with our Scandinavian “master pieces”. It’s a win-win project.

Then November rolled in. Sister Kathy Hinckley hosted our meeting in her new home – Several Sisters stepped up to co-host, Dorthe Brush, Malinda Ringo, Chris Hix and Theresa Sorenson. A delicious chili, salad and scrumptious desserts were served. We had a visitor join us, Jordan Davis from Moskow, Russia. Jordan is interested in Danish culture, particularly Danish film and is taking language lessons from Sister Birthe Wazak. Jordan introduced herself in Danish and was very eager to initiate conversation in Danish. She did very well. Lots of items on Danish Sisterhood News, January 2018

the agenda were covered, including election of Lodge Officers for 2018. They will be installed at our Holiday meeting in December. As was mentioned in our DSN September article, we have several Sisters struggling with health problems and are trying to stay in contact and be helpful.

This effort will now be streamlined on the initiative of Sister Tita Jergensen who is heading up our new “Sunshine” committee. Going back to our “Roots” - one of the initial purposes for the creation of the Danish Sisterhood and Brotherhood. The Nebraska-Colorado District convention took place in Grand Island, Nebraska September 29 and 30. Joanna Christensen attended as our delegate and Birthe Waszak as the alternate. Joanna presented highlights from the convention and it sounds like it was a productive and fun event. Kathy Hinckley’s heritage presentation capped the November meeting. She shared Danish treasures which belonged to her mother to include Gjøl-Trolde and needle-point from her early school years 100 years ago. It was an excellent and fun presentation.

2018 – here we come.

On December 10, the Danish Sisters of Katherine Lodge # 20 gathered at Tuscany Bistro in Kenosha, WI to celebrate the holiday season. For this annual Christmas Party we had 31 attendees and enjoyed a night of good food and good cheer.

Newly elected officers were installed at the party. Each was elected for two years: President Bette Lasch, Vice-President Majbritt Andersen-Stewart, Marshall Jonna Chiapete and 2nd Trustee Lisa Rasmussen-Zanin. Congratulations to our board members.

A service project for shelter residents was organized as our Christmas Exchange. The Sisters donated a bounty of personal care, grooming items and socks for the project. The items will be distributed between Racine and Kenosha to bring some cheer to residents at the shelters. We’d like everyone, in this season of sharing and caring, to have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Milwaukee, WI Lodge #15 Fall Meeting The fall meetings of Dronning Margrethe Lodge #15 were a great ending to a great year. We still have our annual Christmas Party to round out the season, but our October and November meetings were special.

Our October meeting was held in Waterford, Wisconsin at the home of Margy Stubley with Lou Ann Jensen serving as the co-hostess. It was a wonderful meeting with a very interesting program presented by students from Burlington High School who were part of a student exchange program between Burlington, Wisconsin and Roskilde, Denmark.

Lou Ann Jensen wrote the following summary: “About four years ago, a relative of mine, Elisabeth Lollike, who teaches at Roskilde Cathedral School in Denmark, contacted me about some students from the school visiting Burlington. They were going to visit Chicago, and it was her opinion that they should also visit Burlington and experience the smaller town feel.

A friend of mine from the high school put her in touch with Nancy Satola, who for many years arranged all the AFS visits with students from other countries. Everything worked quickly and in the fall of 2015 Burlington had what has become known as the first Danish Invasion. The response and enthusiasm from everyone was so positive that the fall of 2016 and 2017 saw two more groups arrive from Roskilde.

Several students from Burlington had been expressing that it would be interesting for them to see Denmark and see where their new friends live and go to school, so in April of 2017 a group of 28 young people invaded Denmark.

At our Sisterhood meeting in October we were privileged to have 10 of those students with us to share their impressions and opinions of the school and of Denmark.“

Each of the ten students in attendance gave a brief talk about their experiences in Denmark followed by a question and answer period. For some of the students it was their first time outside the United States.

For all it was their first trip to Denmark and everyone who spoke had warm and positive feelings for the people and the country of Denmark.

The trip was short, only six days visiting in and around Roskilde. Fifty Burlington students applied for this exchange and 28 were chosen. Most of those chosen had been involved with the program for Danish students over the past 3 years.

During their six days the students stayed with Danish host families. They attended classes and toured in the Roskilde area and in Copenhagen. Because they

stayed with different families, each student had unique stories and observations on Danish education, culture and family life.

Our lodge members were very impressed with these amazing young people. Often we hear our generation worrying about the future. If these young people are any example, the future will be very bright indeed. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to meet the students. We were all proud to hear them speak so glowingly about the land of our ancesters. As Lou Ann wrote at the end of her summary, “It was an amazing evening.”

Our November meeting has been a craft meeting for the past several years. This year we once again gathered together to make a craft item.

We met on Saturday afternoon at the home of Ann-Marie Bergman. A committee had prepared kits with all the supplies needed to make a nisse.

The idea for the nisse came from some of our members, Agnes Cappeletti and Nancy Mansavage, who many years ago constructed these nisse. One of our members had some of the nisse that these women had made and the committee was able to recreate the craft.

Kits are sold for the cost of the materials enclosed. This year we had two kits, one the nisse figurine and the other a nisse head that could be used as an ornament or a pin.

Since the heads are made from nylon stockings, every nisse has it’s own personality and the creativity of the lodge members added to the individuality of the figures. A few photos from our craft meeting are included.

CHRISTMAS DINNER FOR LODGE #100

Resolution

The annual Christmas dinner for Lodge #100 was again on a snowy Sunday afternoon, Dec. 10th, at Liberty Lanes in Sandusky with eleven members and husbands in attendance. Our vice-president, Carol Schlaud, had decorated the table so beautifully for Christmas. A formal meeting was not held but discussed the MOO convention plans made so far and the treasurer passed out our dues notices for 2018. Schedules for 2018 were also passed out along with the little Heart calendars for 2018 from National.

We do not meet for Jan., Feb., or March, so we will begin meeting again in April when the weather is better.

Dorothy Ekblad passed away on November 14, 2017, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dorothy was born on July 28, 1926, to Emanuel and Matilda Ekblad. Dorothy was a career nurse and worked for many years at both Bryan Health and the Veterans Hospital in Lincoln.

She loved all sports. She enjoyed participating in the Cornhusker State Games and was recognized as the oldest participant in the Games; in 2017, she won four gold medals. She was a lifetime member of First Lutheran Church in Lincoln, a member of Norden Club, and a member of the Danish Sisterhood of America.

Dorothy is survived by nieces, Linda Cleveland Morton (and Bob), Diana Hush Gregory (and Steve), Patsy Cleveland Martin (and Ron), Susan Hush Rehnberg (and Peter), Stacy Cushing McClure (and Brian), and Carol Ekblad Hayes (and Rich) as well as nephews Doug Cushing (and Mary) and Tom Hush. She also has seven great nieces and five great-nephews.

Services were held for her on November 21, 2017, at First Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dorothy will be remembered as a very pleasant, positive lady who was actively involved in sports throughout her entire life; she will be greatly missed by her Danish Sisterhood Lodge #90.

Dorothy Sundquist Lund: A Life Remembered The Sisters of Freja Lodge #36 are saddened by the sudden loss of our Sister Dorothy Sundquist on November 28, 2017. Dorothy passed away in Lakewood, New Jersey

Dorothy Lund was born in 1925 in Woodbridge, New Jersey to Carl and Esther Sundquist.

Dorothy had one brother Carl Sundquist, JR who predeceased her. Dorothy was affectionately known as “Dot”.

Dorothy was married to Milton Lund who was of Danish ancestry. Dorothy and Milton had four children, Janice Lund, Kenneth Lund, Sally Lund and Audrey Lund. Dot was known for her wonderful sense of fun and sense of humor.

Dot was very involved in her community. She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Perth Amboy, New Jersey for many years serving as a Sunday school and a vacation Bible school teacher. She was also President of the women’s group and a Girl Scout leader.

Dorothy Lund was initiated into the Danish Sisterhood on September 16, 1983. Dorothy’s husband was an active member of The Danish Brotherhood Thor Lodge #46. Dorothy and Milton attended many of activities in The Danish Home in Edison, New Jersey.

For many years Dorothy held various jobs, her last job was as a medical assistant which she enjoyed.

Dorothy loved animals and owned dogs and cats all her life.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Milton, her parents Carl and Esther Sundquist, and her Grandson Aaron Bennett. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Janice and John Hutchison of Lakewood, New Jersey, Kenneth Lund of Rehoboth Beach, DE, Sally and David Bennett of Parma Heights, Ohio, and Audrey Lund of Bluffton, South Carolina. She has 5 Grandchildren, and six Great grandchildren.

Dorothy lived most of her life in Fords, New Jersey, before moving to Monroe Township, then to Tinton Falls, and finally to Lakewood New Jersey.

The Sisters of Freja Lodge #36 will greatly miss our Sister Dorothy Lund. We will drape our Charter at the next meeting and have a Memorial Service.
