It’s that special time of year with resolutions for changes, weight loss, quit this or that, new starts, all very interesting. It makes you wonder why we wait and do that on January 1st, and usually by February 1st it’s long forgotten.

I think of the Sisterhood, and what resolutions we may want to make for the new year, ones that hopefully are not forgotten

by February 1st. Perhaps we could focus on membership, how to expand our organization, and reach out to others. I believe that for many of us our communities no longer know we exist.

We are focused inward, and rarely venture out to the public. There are some excellent examples of lodges that are successful in attracting new members, and one thing they all have in common is their involvement in the community. Another example is a lodge that has some interesting and diverse Danish activities/programs going on, with food… got to have good Danish food. That is a great way to attract folks, because when word spreads about good food, they come running.

I would like to challenge each of our lodges to focus on this new year, and come up with ideas that are practical, relevant and exciting and send them in for us to share. If your lodge has done this activity or process and been successful with it, please provide details. We could all use a new idea and perhaps it will spark the interest of another lodge to try it.

Also, I can’t wait to let you know we have now received our itinerary and pricing for the next Sisterhood trip. All the details will be in the next issue of the Sisterhood News, so be on the look out.

Dear Sisters, I started my new year with a running start. While I did have a little time to celebrate with friends, I was very busy moving to the big city of Saint Paul. I’ve just now gotten settled in and am loving it.

As I was moving into my apartment, I reminisced back to my trips to Denmark and Europe and thought about how they have such classy and simple interior design. Most homes in Denmark have white walls and colored accents.

There are often wood floors and furnishings as well. Homes in Denmark and Europe tend to be smaller than American homes due to the density of cities and the smaller land mass of the continent. My apartment reminds me a lot of the European style. I live in a building built in the early 1900s.

It has white walls and wood floors, and I’ve worked in some color with my accessories. I also have a beautiful wooden desk and bookshelf my dad made for me that is a focal point in the space.

I must say, I’ve rather enjoyed living in smaller apartments over the years. Sometimes it’s like a puzzle, figuring out where to put things and how they can be displayed. It also helps me cut down on clutter and on accumulating too much stuff!

As I write this, I am looking around my home and seeing little bits of Denmark everywhere. A wooden Danish soldier on one shelf, a plate with the Danish crest on another, plenty of candles around the room, and of course, pictures of my Danish cousins and my trips to Denmark.

Growing up, we had similar items around our house and I often took them for granted. This month, I ask that you take a moment and look around you. Maybe you’ll see a trincket or a picture from Denmark or from another part of your own past that will remind you of a story, a memory.

Sometimes we all need to just take a moment, enjoy our surroundings, and think about our precious memories of times past. And if you ever would like to share a story, please send it along!

On the Cover Title: Rubjerg Knude Region of Denmark: LØkken, Jutland, Denmark Year taken: 2007 Photographer: James M Nielsen Along the western coast of Denmark, a common attraction is Rubjerg Knude, the lighthouse that is being swallowed by a sand dune.

The lighthouse was built between 1899 and 1900. It was originally built far inland, but with time, the sea moved inward and sand began to pile up. Efforts were made to stop the sand and wind from covering the lighthouse, but in 1961, efforts were ceased and the lighthouse was lit for the last time. You can still visit the lighthouse today, or what’s left unburied!

New Member for Western Star Lodge #113

Carolyn A. Andersen joined Danish Sisterhood Western Star Lodge #113 on October 4,, 2016.

This is our first new member since 2003. So this is a big deal for us!

Carolyn was born in Manning, Iowa, just north of Elk Horn where the Danish Windmill was brought over to America from Denmark in 1976.

Also a souvenir shop and museum.

She married Revel Andersen on October 12, 1963. Carolyn was a mother and homemaker. She worked mainly in accounting for Sara Lee, in a bank, Delicious Foods, and Monfreds.

Revel’s dad, John Andersen came through Ellis Island in 1907 from Godthaab, Denmark on November 30, 1907.

Such a joy to have her in our fellowship.

Updates from Lodge #20, Kenosha, WI We’ve had a busy few months here at Lodge #20.

We’d like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to all who contributed to our Fall Bake Sale. Many Sisters generously gave their time to work for the sale. The fall sale supports our Charity Grants each year. At our February meeting, we will make decisions about our 2017 grants.

On December 3rd, we had our Katherine Lodge Christmas Party at 1pm at the Birchwood Grill in Kenosha. Part of our program was an ornament exchange. December 4th was the date of the Brotherhood’s Children’s Christmas Party. Our two Sisters, Samantha and Vita were co-chairs for this event.

Coming up this Spring, we have many fun plans. Our February 15th meeting will be the review of our lodge’s book club pick, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Discussion will be led by Jonna Chiapete and Lisa Rasmussen-Zanin.

We look forward to sharing more of our activities in future issues! We hope that you all had happy holidays and that you have a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Heartland Convention Amber Lodge #186 had the privilege of hosting the Heartland Danish Convention this fall from September 23-25th in Baxter, MN. Lodge members spent many hours preparing for the convention.

Special thanks go out to Nealna Gylling for the time that she spent organizing and lining up much of the food for the event. Thank you also to Dottie Bisted for making arrangements with the Country Inn and Suites for the HDC lodging and for the use of the conference room.

At the Friday night dinner at Trinity Lutheran Church, each table had centerpieces reflecting the convention theme: It’s Fun to Be Danish. They showcased different aspects of Danish culture including Hans Christian Andersen, bicycles, and Legos. Saturday afternoon Sisterhood and Brotherhood members were able to tour the Crow Wing County Museum in Brainerd, MN. Convention attendees were able to see the display at the museum on Danes in Central Minnesota and Famous Danes. Paintings done by Amber Lodge’s Evelyn Matthias were on display at the museum. Late Saturday afternoon, time was spent at Gull Lake at Don and Nealna Gylling’s home before returning to Country Inn for an evening banquet.

District Conventions are a great way to reconnect with or to meet new Danish Sisterhood and Brotherhood members from other Lodges.

They also give the opportunity to meet staff from the Museum of Danish America. I enjoyed meeting and talking to Mads Madsen Henriksen at this year’s convention. He is an intern at the museum.

The fall/winter 2016 America Letter from the museum has an article on Danish interns Mads Madsen Henriksen and Vincent Henriksen.

As a newer Sisterhood member, I have noticed what pride members take in the friendship between Denmark and the United States. My Danish immigrant ancestors were thankful to become United States citizens, and in being productive citizens in their local communities. This Danish American bond was seen once again as the Danish and American flag flew together at the Country Inn at the 2016 Heartland Danish Convention. I am happy to say that I am a member of both the Daughters of the American Revolution and the

NEWS FROM DES MOINES, IA LODGE #102

We had a busy time in September. At our monthly meeting we assembled two gift baskets for the SH auction and agreed to give a donation of $50 to the Country Store. Many of us attended a wonderful Heartland District convention in Brainerd, MN hosted by the Amber Lodge. Our new Vice President is Carol Rudisill from our lodge. Sandy Mikkelsen, our National President was our guest.

Also present was Linda Holz a national trustee and member of our lodge. Besides this position, Linda has been a past district president, past Lodge#102 president, and a SH member for 50 years!

Our annual event in October is going out to eat at the Chicago Speakeasy. Edith Paulsen had just celebrated her 96th birthday. We had two infants with us,Beth (Rudisill) Volious’ little Phoebe Sincerely, and Christina’s son William. It was so nice to have these little ones with us. Pallazallo came from Randers, Denmark where Knud Dyby was from. I wish she was alive so she could share whether she knew him or not. Knud and I kept in touch with one another for some time. He moved to California after WWII. The book is about the Danish Resistance movement.

News from the Christine Lodge #1: Negaunee, Michigan

Our lodge has made a few changes over the last couple of months. We decided to change our meeting locations to members homes. This decision has made it much easier to hold conversations and to participate in additional activities. A few highlights from the past year have included:

We visited the gravesite of our founder, Christine Hemmingsen.

We attempted to make some fancy Danish Hearts.

We have played some Danish Games, and, we made some traditional Danish Juleklip.

This December we will be hosting a traditional Danish Julefrokost, and hope to continue to add more pieces of our history and culture to our meetings in the upcoming year! (If you are ever in the area, we meet every second Monday of the month at 6:30 pm). We also have voted to start the process to become part of the M.O.O. District as our lodge currently does not belong to any district.

COLUMBIA HALL Dannebrog’s Columbia Hall has been a renovation project since 1991.

It was purchased by the Dannebrog’s Booster club. The main objective was to restore it as a community Hall.

It serves today as a small museum.

Tourists can come and look up their roots and look through the many scrapbooks Shirley Johnson has compiled. Shirley is a hero in many people’s eyes, as if it wasn’t for her, Columbia Hall would not be here today.

A little history–it was first constructed in 1908 by the Danish Broherhood. That’s when the Danish SIsterhood got started later in 1909 and then disbanded in the late 40s. The last member did not give up. She had her daughter-in-law, Harriet Nielsen, drive her to Grand Island to the Western Star Lodge # 113. Her name was Anna Nielsen.

Columbia served as a hardware store and Winchester and Hald furniture store, a funeral parlor, and the Odd Fellows and Rebecca’s used the Hall for meetings. Dances and parties were held every Saturday night on the second floor.

The first floor is completed with two bathrooms, kitchen, and main meeting area.

The funding for the project has come from all the grants, donations, memorials, and money from Dannebrog’s alumni. Many volunteers have worked together, and with the help of this generation, a piece of Danish history will again be Dannebrog’s hub.

Bedstemors: Member Tells of Starting Antique Store with Danish Roots Roger and I have been looking for main street property for many years. Well, in 2014, an opportunity opened up for us at 122 S. Mill. After getting a lawyer and all the paperwork done, we had our Antique store. The first time Roger gave me the tour, I was very discouraged. I knew clean up and starting from scratch would be a lot of hard work.

Roger, not afraid of hard work, dug right in.

The first step was to put on a new roof and brick up the crumbling west wall. Roger told me, “I was the best looking mud lady he had ever had.” He is a mason at heart.

The first taxable records began in 1915 when the store was sold to Niel Nielsen from Peter Petersen. It sat idle for forty years from 1922 to 1962. When we were growing up, it was a barber shop and Susie’s Beauty Shop. Tammy Rief had it as a hair salon for a time as well.

It’s iteresting to hear and talk to the visitors who pass by and see our progress. One guy said, “This is too small for an antique store or this is too far gone, it’s not worth it to fix it up.”

In life, you have dream crasher, that’s a fact of life. But, then on the other hand, one lady gave us a $100 check and then there are those who say, “This is so exciting. I can’t wait until you are open.”

An inspiration to us was the hard work

ethic of the people who live here like Harriet Nielsen, who when most people retire, she started Harriet’s Danish (fine, delicious homestyle cooking). Or Ray and Shirley who fixed up and remodeled “Healthy Woman.” Geo and Bev Dethlef bought it now and have given it another facelift.

Mother used to say, “You always need something to get up for.” She worked every day of her life.

I hope when our little store is finished and when we have our openeing, you walk in and remember back, like coming into Grandma’s house. Please come and check it out. Maybe you can find a treasure or something you just can’t live without. Oh, and remember dreams really do come true.

Another thanks to Marge Lauritsen for the name “Bedstemors” which means “Grandma’s” in Danish.

We had our Grand Opening on June 4, 2016. All our family was there. It was truly wonderful and exciting. We are having so much fun with our little antique store.

Update from Lodge #100

The annual Christmas dinner for Lodge #100 took place Sun., Dec. 11, 2016, at Liberty Lanes in Sandusky with eight in attendance. It was a very snowy, blustery day, so some chose not to venture out. We enjoyed a meal together, with no formal meeting being held, but secretary reported that she had sent in a Christmas adv. to the Sisterhood News and the annual report had been sent in.

2016 IN REVIEW from Ellen Lodge #21 2016. Wow, what a year. A lot of anxiety and uncertainty floating around the world, but thankfully, the Danish Sisterhood is still strong and in tack. In January the new Board of Ellen Lodge 21 took over with Birgitte Jappe Ross as our new President. I am pleased to announce that the entire Board was willing to continue in the same position for another year.

Our officers for 2017: Birgitte Jappe Ross – President; Alicia Stover – Vice President, Kathy Hinckley – Secretary, Theresa Sorenson – Treasurer, Malinda Ringo – First Trustee, Dorthe Brush – 2nd Trustee and Marshall, and Lynne McEarchen – 3rd Trustee.

The beginning of 2016 definitely challenged many of our Sister’s strength, faith and fortitude. The trustees report was quite extensive: different types of cancer and chemo, broken bones, surgeries……I am pleased to say that everyone is well or on the road to recovery. We feel very blessed that all of our members are still with us to ring in the New Year.

One of the goals this year was to shorten our meetings giving us more time for heritage and socializing. Accomplished!! We’ve had some great heritage reports. Tita Jergensen gave a report on one of her trips to Denmark. She discussed the houses in Aero at which time she mentioned the porcelain dogs one would find in the windows. This brought on another report at the next meeting regarding the Staffordshire dogs.

We also learned more about the Fastelavn traditions. Two of our “newer” members (Joanna Christensen and Lynne McEarchen) gave great reports on their Danish heritage pointing out on a map of Denmark where their Danish roots originated. At our December meeting Gitte gave an excellent report on the many Danish traditions at Christmas including lighting the Advent Wreath, baking traditional Christmas cookies, Christmas eve dinner, decorating the Christmas tree, Christmas church service, Santa Claus, etc.

Personally, I’m not sold on the whole idea of real candles on the Christmas tree, but that’s just me.

as our newest member to Ellen Lodge. She is a great addition to the Danish Sisterhood.

Joanna Christensen and Birthe Wazak hosted the June picnic. Getting to Joanna’s is a long drive, but it was well worth it.

There was no question as to where the party was being held with all the Danish flags. As is tradition, everyone brought their favorite dish for pot luck and because the sun was shining bright, there was plenty beverages to quench our thirst. Wanting to test our knowledge of Denmark, Joanna put together a couple quizzes for us: Where in the world is Denmark and another where you had to match the Danish word to the English word. It was a great afternoon.

October luncheon prizes.

October found four of our Sisters (Birgitte Jappe Ross-Alternate Delegate, Dorthe Brush – Delegate, Birthe Wazak, and Inge Nagata) traveling to Omaha, Nebraska for the Nebraska/Colorado District Convention. First stop was to visit Little Scandinavia in Elk Horn, NE. Then it was back to Omaha to join the Convention festivities and to get reacquainted with all our Nebraska Sisters. After the convention, they traveled to Elk Horn, Iowa to visit the Danish Museum and then it was back home to Colorado.

Glenda Heil and Linda Brooks (mother and daughter team) did a fabulous job of organizing the

October luncheon at Maggiano’s Italian restaurant.

The weather was beautiful which always guarantees a great turnout. The food was yummy and everyone went home with a prize.

Our last gathering was the Christmas luncheon at the home of Birgitte Jappe Ross, co-hosted

by Birthe Wazak. Gitte’s home was beautifully decorated for Christmas from top to bottom. After a short meeting to install the officers for 2017, it was time to sit down for a Danish luncheon starting with pork and red cabbage, including flaeskesavaer (pork rind) and finishing with ris a’l’amande (rice pudding) topped with cherry sauce.

Yum! In the past we always Birgitte Jappe Ross reading the “never exchanged ending” Christmas Story Christmas ornaments.

This year we decided to exchange “appropriate” gifts instead of ornaments. Each ornament had to start with a certain letter from the alphabet and we were coming up to X,Y,Z. Gifts seemed a lot easier.

Our lodge was busy again this year making crafts to sell at the Trollheim Craft fair in November and the Latvian church in December. The money we make from the crafts gives us the opportunity to share our good fortune with organizations throughout Denver like Gateway Women’s shelter and Season to Share. This year we were able to help one of the local schools, Eiber Elementary, by donating funds that would help supply Christmas presents for 40 homeless families.

I would also like to thank Hanne Jespersen for the gifts she made for the members of our Lodge.

Hanne was one of the vendors at the 2015 Convention. She saw some of the ladies at the convention with felt hearts to hold their DSS pins. So, she decided to make one for each of our members along with mini Danish flags on a string and Dannebrog flags on poles to be used at our monthly meetings.

That should wrap up 2016. Now it’s on to 2017. I wish you all a Happy New Year.

Remembering Anna Lindahl At its November meeting, Unity Lodge #75 draped its charter in memory of our sister Anna Beckham Lindahl who died on October 22, 2016 in Seattle.

Anna joined our lodge after moving to Enumclaw in the early 80’s. As she had done all her life, Anna did not simply sign up but became an active member serving as lodge president and Northwest District president. After health issues dictated a move to Seattle, she was able and did return to Enumclaw for special events. When that was no longer possible, she continued her membership and kept up via the lodge minutes and the Danish Sisterhood News. “How did the Bazaar (or Aebleskiver breakfast or convention) go?” was an eager question for visitors as she had the dates on her mental calendar.

Among her travels following retirement was a trip to Denmark which was special as her mother, Huldah Christensen, was born in Saelland, Bolerup Denmark. Anna learned to speak Danish from her while growing up in New Lisbon, WI and Chicago.

Despite declining health following a stroke in July, Anna remained very sharp mentally until her very last days. She was able to joyfully celebrate her 99th birthday on September 23 with family. She is survived by daughter Joann, sons Eric and Peter, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is remembered fondly by them and by those of us that were privileged to know her. To honor her lifelong dedication to education and her Danish heritage, the lodge made a donation to Himmelbjerget in Portland.

Tivoli Virtual Lodge #300 News A NIGHT AT THE OSCARS by 300 member Susanne Hohlen Monticello, Minnesota shohlen@uslink.net

Ever been to the Oscars? I am proud to say I have on many occasions, however, not by invitation of the Academy, but from the comfort of my own sofa. With the winter months upon us and a time to hunker down resorting to inside activities, why not embark on a Danish cinematic journey?

I have always been a huge fan of movie watching. TV actually played a huge role in my first years as an adult immigrant in this country, greatly expanding my vocabulary.

I was so busy adjusting to my new life and ways that I neglected to follow the trends in Danish movie-making. In 2002 through the Danish Pioneer newspaper I connected with a Danish gentleman in Canada advertising his Danish movie conversion services. This relationship was a catalyst for my return to Danish movie watching, starting with “Italian For Beginners”, a romantic comedy written and directed by Lone Scherfig. The film was made by the austere principles of the Dogme 95 movement, including the use of hand-held cameras and natural lighting, and is known as Dogme XII.

This was the beginning of countless hours of Danish movie watching (a habit that continues today). One of my favorite TV series was “Kroniken” (English: Better Times), a Danish drama which aired on Sunday evenings between January 2004 and January 2007. The 22-episode series relates the lives of two fictional families during the historical development of the Danmarks Radio (DR) television network from the 1950’s to the 1970’s.

Another marathon series and very noteworthy is Rejseholdet, English: “Unit One”. First broadcast in 2000 and featuring well-known Mads Mikkelsen, the series tells about an elite mobile police task force traveling the country, helping the local police solve complex crimes.

Mads Mikkelsen also starred in the 2012 Oscar-nominated historical drama “A Royal Affair” playing the role of 18th-century physician Johann Friedrich Struensee who had an affair with Queen Caroline Mathilda while treating the mentally-ill Danish monarch, Christian VII. The movie was one of the highest budget Danish films of all time, largely due to its extravagant costumes, and was well received by critics.

A more recent TV series (thirty episodes to be exact) by the name of Borgen, English: “The Castle” came to my rescue every Sunday afternoon for about three months after my husband passed away. The series is a Danish political drama created by multi-talented Adam Price. It tells how politician Birgitte Nyborg, becomes the first female Prime

Minister of Denmark against all odds. “Borgen” (“the Castle”) is the informal name of Christiansborg Palace, which houses all three branches of Danish government: the Parliament, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Supreme Court. I was so mesmerized by this series, which is really a political thriller with the wheeling and dealing in full light.

A testimony to the fame of the series, it won the following awards: Monte Carlo TV Festival (2013), Best European Drama TV Series; British Academy Television Awards (2012), International Prize; Prix Italia (2010), Best TV Drama; and the Peabody Award (2013).

And if you are a fan of crime, I highly recommend The Eagle: A Crime Odyssey (In Danish: “Ørnen: En krimi-odyssé”) (2004-2006) produced

by Danmarks Radio. It won an International Emmy Award from the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for best non-American television drama series in 2005. The series was filmed on location in various parts of northern Europe, from Berlin (Germany) and Copenhagen (Denmark) to Oslo (Norway) and other locations, including Iceland. “The Eagle” is the nickname for detective Hallgrim Hallgrimson for his unerring intuition and competence. His superior and police inspector is played by Great Dane Ghita Noerby, the Danish equivalent to Maggie Smith or Judi Dench.

So why don’t you do yourself a favor and expand your Danish vocabulary and enjoy some great movie watching to make the dark months go by fast?
