Sindy Mikkelsen, National President Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope you have, or did, plan to spend some special time, with those that are your Valentine’s. One can never have too many Valentines.

And speaking of doing something special for your Valentine’s, there is an article in this issue of the newsletter from the Museum of Danish America. The Sisterhood has apparently given the largest single collection to the museum for processing ever! Which is fantastic, as we wanted it preserved, however it’s created more of a challenge than the museum anticipated.

The data portion (our membership records) are being processed by the Genealogy Center. The membership cards are approximately 65% complete with data entry, then proofing and finally digitizing (photographing) will need to be complete before they move on to the oldest of records, the original ledgers.

The artifacts that were given to the museum have not been worked on yet due to the massive nature of the collection. The Museum has an incredible employee that was hired as a result of a grant for the purpose of sorting, cataloging and preserving properly, the Brotherhood collection given to the Museum. Her time is nearing the end, and we have a unique opportunity to secure her with all her experience to work solely on our artifacts for 3 years. The State of Iowa offers a matching funds grant program to do this work. This is our chance to partner with the Museum to make this happen.

The goal is to raise $50,000, and the State would then match those funds if it’s raised in time for this grant award. We want to help as much as possible, as this is our history we want to save! Although our items are safer with the Museum than a storage locker, it’s still not “safe” until it’s been photographed, catalogued and preserved.

We don’t need to wait to help. This can be accomplished

by Individual, Lodge and Districts gifts. Please consider this opportunity to honor our history by making a contribution to this effort.

Dear Sisters, Recently we had a whole week where it snowed every single day. I admit, I started feeling a little cabin fever. However, I realized that when we get crazy weather here in Minnesota, it’s sometimes pretty unique!

So I started sending photos over to my cousins in Denmark. Most of them were wowed by the amount of snow we have and several of them replied with a “Looks great!” or “Great for skiing in!”

I remind myself of the special things that we can only do in winter–play in the snow, go for a walk while Jack Frost nips at our noses, go ice skating or sledding or skiing or snowshoeing... the list goes on!

I also think of the benefits of wintertime indoors, like drinking a hot cup of tea or cocoa, cuddling up with a blanket or a book, sitting by a fire, or having friends over for many hours of playing games and enjoying a meal.

Soon spring will be here, so I am trying my best to enjoy our winter weather! I hope each of you can find the little things in life that are worth enjoying.

Winter Update from Amber Lodge #186 Brainerd, MN The Amber Lodge Christmas party was held at the home of Barb Wenschlag in December. It was a great afternoon of shared company, shared gifts and shared food. Thank you Barb for hosting a great event and opening up your home for all of us to enjoy again this year!

The January meeting was held at the Good Shepard Free Lutheran Church in Brainerd. Due to cold weather and assorted travel plans we met with a small group. Highlighting the business meeting was the installation of 2019 officers.

Since we were missing quite a few members we did not take photos, but will do so a future meeting with everyone present. We also discussed program suggestions and commitments for 2019 and adjustments to spring and summer meeting times.

W E N DSS Angel Member Status The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels� posted.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you would be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category are welcome to participate by donating $1000 to the Danish Sisterhood, which can be sent to the National Treasurer.

News from Fjelddronning Lodge #131, Ferndale, CA Brightly lit trees and gaily wrapped gifts welcomed everyone who attended our annual Joint Christmas party in early December. Participating were the Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and Dannebrog lodges. We enjoyed a wonderful catered dinner, followed by the opening of gifts. This wasn’t without some effort, however, as we did a Pirate exchange. I don’t if anyone ended up with the original they chose. It’s always a lot of fun and you never know what going to happen.

We also had a new project this year. Our little town always has a very popular lighted tractor parade about a week before Christmas, attended by hundreds of people from surrounding communities. It’s usually cold, and quite often raining, however it was dry this year. Our new venture was to sell Coffee and Hot Chocolate to the visitors who passed by our lodge hall, where we set up a table right outside the door, a half block from main street. It was successful and we plan to do this again next year. People were very happy to get something warm to drink, and the chocolate was the most popular.

We started out our new year with the initiation of two new members. This is always a thrill for a small lodge, such as ours, and our meeting

was exactly 106 years after the starting of our lodge.

President Diane Moran had the honor of initiating her daughter, Brandy Moran and Katrina Bertelsen. I also would like to add that Diane is a Great Granddaughter of one of our Charter Members, thus making Brandy her Great- Great Granddaughter. Hopefully this will be the start of something wonderful and we’ll get more new members as we progress into the year.

We look forward to a successful year and would love to have visitors from other parts of the US. So many people visit Ferndale, we’d love to have you be a part of this group.

Requesting/processing a funeral benefit for a certificate holding member.

We felt it would be helpful to the Lodge secretaries and member’s families if I posted the instructions for requesting a funeral benefit.

When one of our certificate holding members passes away, their beneficiaries are entitled to their funeral benefit. The member must have been a current/active member (dues paid) at the time of their death for the benefit to be valid.

The funds will be issued to the beneficiary noted in the member’s record with the National Secretary. If the noted beneficiary passed away prior to the member, and no beneficiary change had been made, the check will be issued to the Estate of...

Member Awarded for Community Service At a recent Partnership for Youth Justice Brunch hosted by King County (WA) Superior Court, Hygge #188 Sister Joan Adams Brown was recognized for 30 years of volunteering with the King County Juvenile Court Conference Committee in Enumclaw, WA. Sisterhood Archives Project

In October of 2016, the Museum of Danish America became the permanent repository for a very large collection of the Danish Sisterhood in America materials. This collection spans approximately 75 boxes of paper materials and more than 450 three-dimensional objects. Because of the extreme volume, the museum has only scratched the surface of cataloging these pieces and making them available for exhibition and research.

In April 2019, MoDA will submit a grant application to the State Historical Society of Iowa asking for funding to support the cataloging of this collection. Cataloging will be shared by the Registrar, who has worked with the museum’s collections for nearly 15 years, and the Archival Collections Manager, who is halfway through a two year project working with the larger archives collections. The Archival Collections Manager position would be extended an additional two years with this grant and would focus specifically on cataloging and digitizing the Sisterhood materials.

The kick-off of the project would coincide perfectly with the Danish Sisterhood of America 2019 National Convention in Omaha where we are looking especially forward to hosting your delegates for a visit to our community. It would be an ideal way to celebrate the ongoing partnership between our two organizations.

Sisterhood Archives Project Application and project:

• Application is due in April, with notification of the outcome in June • Project would begin later in 2019; anticipated to be largely complete by end of 2021

What the grant covers:

• Two years’ salary and benefits for the Archival Collections Manager • Materials needed for rehousing (acid free boxes and folders, shelving)

Grant details:

• 1 to 1 match – half of the total project budget comes from the grant, half from the museum either through donations or general budgeting • Seeking to raise approximately $50,000 for MoDA’s match

Project steps: 1) Rehouse all materials so they are not in peril. Current boxes are not acid free, which contributes acids to further deterioration of these important materials.

2) While rehousing, create a more detailed version of the earlier preliminary inventory so that materials are easily searchable and more usable.

3) Catalog all collections. This will result in thorough written records of the materials found on the inventory list. Digitization will also occur at this stage through scanning and photography.

4) Preservation. All collections will be stored within climate controlled spaces with secured access and fire suppression. Archival quality storage materials will be used for all pieces.

The Museum of Danish America understands the value of this substantial and unique collection and wishes to make it as accessible as possible; seeking grant funding for this project will provide the necessary staff resources to meet that goal. MoDA’s grant application will be strengthened if we can show support for this project from the Sisterhood, both in terms of interest in using the collection and pledges of financial support. The museum in honored to be entrusted with the Sisterhood materials, and we welcome this partnership to ensure the long-term care and preservation of the Sisterhood collection.

Den Lille Havfrue

by Annette Lind, Milwaukee Lodge #15 Many people think they know the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, The Little Mermaid. If you think it is the story of a young mermaid named Ariel who, with the help of her friends, Flounder, a fish, and Sebastian, a crab, eventually defeats the evil witch Ursula allowing her to marry Eric, a prince and live happily ever after, you are not familiar with the Hans Christian Andersen story.

While some of the basics in the Disney version are from Andersen, his tale does not end with a marriage. Instead it is a story of a mermaid who makes a deal with an evil witch by giving up her beautiful voice for legs instead of a tail. She fails to get the prince to kiss her and in the end cannot kill him to save herself. She falls into the sea to become sea foam but, in fact, is raised up by the daughters of the air. After 300 years of doing good deeds as a daughter of the air she can earn an immortal soul, something only granted to humans. But, whether human children are good or naughty has a direct effect on how many years she must spend waiting.

As Andersen writes at the end of his fairytale:

“After three hundred years, thus shall we float into the kingdom of heaven,” said she.

“And we may even get there sooner,” whispered one of her companions. “Unseen we can enter the houses of men, where there are children, and for every day on which we find a good child, who is the joy of his parents and deserves their love, our time of probation is shortened. The child does not know, when we fly through the room, that we smile with joy at his good conduct, for we can count one year less of our three hundred years. But when we see a naughty or a wicked child, we shed tears of sorrow, and for every tear a day is added to our time of trial!”

Wow, that is quite a burden on those little children.

Many of the old fairytales have been altered to make them more acceptable for more recent generations. Several of these old stories were morality lessens and did not often end with “happily ever after.”

In light of Andersen’s rather sad story, why would the Danes and the world so love the statue of the Little Mermaid in the harbor of Copenhagen?

In part to answer that you have to understand it was not the story itself, but the ballet written from that story that was the inspiration for the statue.

Ellen Price became the prima ballerina of the Royal Danish Ballet in 1903. She danced the role of La Sylphide, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid.

The ballet of The Little Mermaid was based on Andersen’s story. It was set to music by Fini Henriques and choreographed by Hans Beck in 1909 for the Royal Danish Ballet. In the audience of one performance was Carl Jacobsen, the son of J.C. Jacobsen who founded the Carlsberg Brewery.

Carl Jacobsen had worked for his father, but broke with him in 1882 and founded his own brewery. He first named his brewery Valby Brewery, but with his father’s approval changed the name to Ny Carlsberg (new Carlsberg). His father’s brewery changed its name to Gammel Carlsberg (Old Carlsberg). After his father’s death the two breweries eventually merged. In 1906 Carl became the head of Carlsberg Brewery.

Carl Jacobsen and his wife Ottilia Marie Jacobsen (nee Stegmann) were very interested in the arts, especially in Greek and classic art. He founded the Ny Carlsberg Glyptoteck in 1897—the art museum based on his classical collection which remains one of the most important Danish art museums.

After seeing Ellen Price perform the Little Mermaid, he was so moved he commissioned Edvard Eriksen to create a bronze sculpture of the mermaid using Price as the model. Ellen Price agree to model but refused to pose nude. As a result, only the head of the sculpture is modeled from Ellen Price.

Price continued to work in the Royal Danish Ballet until 1913 after which she pursued a career as a dramatic actress. She worked at the drama theater

in Aarhus and acted in two silent movies. Two short movies of her dancing can be seen on the internet.

Price died in 1968 and is buried on the Danish island of Bornholm.

Edvard Eriksen, the artist commissioned by Jacobsen, was a Danish-Icelandic sculptor. He apprenticed as a wood carver and went on to train at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1894 to 1899.

Besides sculpting the Little Mermaid in bronze, he was employed to create the allegorical statues Grief, Memory and Love for the sarcophagus of Christian IX and Queen Louise which can be seen in Roskilde Cathedral. He went on to teach at the Royal Academy and from 1930 to 1953 served as the conservator at the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen. In 1932 he was made a Knight of the Order of the Danneborg. Eriksen died in 1959 at the age of 82 and is buried with is wife in Vestre Cemetery in Copenhagen.

With Price refusing to pose nude, Eriksen asked his wife, Eline Eriksen to model. Edvard had used his wife a a model for several of his sculptures.

The bronze statue of the Little Mermaid was unveiled on August 23, 1913. It was presented to the

City of Copenhagen by Carl Jacobsen. It is displayed on a rock along the Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen.

The most common comment one hears from those who see the sculpture for the first time is how small it is. The statue is only around 5 feet tall and weighs 385 pounds.

The Little Mermaid has not sat peacefully in the harbor. In 2010 the Copenhagen City Council sent her on a little trip to Shanghai to be be displayed in the Danish Pavilion at the Expo 2010 Shanghai China. This was a major event. It had the largest number of countries participating and was the most expensive Expo in the history of the world’s fairs. The Shanghai World Expo was also the largest World’s Fair site.

By the end of the expo, over 73 million people had visited – a record attendance – and 246 countries and international organizations had participated. On October 16, 2010, the expo set a single-day record of over 1.03 million visitors. This was the first time the sculpture was officially moved from the seat on the rock.

dalism and protest. In 2006 officials in Copenhagen pondered moving the sculpture. Jens Peter Munk, the keeper of public monuments in Copenhagen, thought about moving her a few feet further into the water to make it more difficult to reach the mermaid and hence to do mischief to the little sculpture.

There were aesthetic and economic considerations and, as of 2019, she still sits on her rock in the same location.

Following is a review of some of the many attacks on the Little Mermaid sculpture. Being a tourist attraction that brings over 1 million people a year to see her probably makes her a target.

Den Lille Havfrue has been a target for many years. However, according to some sources, what we see in the harbor is not the original sculpture, but a replica of the original which is held by the family of Eriksen.

In 2013 the 100th anniversary of the Little Mermaid was celebrated around the world, but especially in Copenhagen. During the festivities boy guards sang birthday songs at a children’s concert and a parade was held. One-hundred women swam around the statue in the harbor.

They later formed a big “100” in the water.

Body-painted “mermaids” also posed in front of world-famous landmarks, from the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the Sydney Opera House. It was quite the event.

The statue is under copyright until 2029.

There are currently 14 copies of the Little Mermaid on display in cities across the world, including ones in the United States, Brazil, Romania and Spain.

There is one copy on the grave of Victor Borge in Greenwich Connecticut and another is in the International Peace Garden in Salt Lake City, Utah. This one was the contribution from the Danes to the garden. You can also see one in Solvang, California and in Kimballton, Iowa. A list of all the locations can be seen on the internet.

Because of the copyright some legal actions have occurred. One such action occurred in 2009 in Michigan. In 1994 Greenville Michigan installed a replica of the Little Mermaid in honor of their Danish Heritage. Greenville is the home to a large Danish Festival that this year will mark its 55th year. It will be held August 15 - 18. Because of the statue, in 2009 the town was sued for copyright infringement. The replica in Greenville is not an exact copy. It is half the size of the original and has a quite a different face, as well as other significant differences. The suit was eventually dropped.

For a little statue based on a fairytale, the Little Mermaid has made a big splash in our world.

A tourist destination, a flashpoint for political statements and vandalism, a Disney movie, the subject of lawsuits, she has come a long way from her first visit from the undersea world to the world of humans— from the imaginative mind of Hans Christian Andersen to a cultural icon.

That’s quite a journey for a little mermaid.

On April 24, 1964 her head was sawn off by a politically-oriented group of artists,. The head was never recovered. A new head was cast and placed on the statue. On July 23, 1984 her right arm was cut off by two young men who returned it two days later.

Then in 1990 an attempt was made to again decapitate the Little Mermaid which left a 7 inch cut in her neck.

On January 6, 1998 she was again decapitated, Those responsible were never found, but the head was returned to a Danish TV station and reattached on February 4, 1998.

In 2003 on the night of September 10, the Little Mermaid was knocked from the rock and found floating in the water the next day. Police said explosives were used to knock her loose. The investigation found a wide hole in her knee and a smaller one in her wrist. A crane was used to pull her from the water. Once again she was repaired and returned to her perch.

Other less destructive attacks have been made on her. In 2004 she was draped in a burqa as a protest against Turkey’s application to join the EU. Again in May 2007 she was draped in a Muslim dress and head scarf.

Several times paint has been poured on her.

On March 8, 2006 a sex toy was attached to her hand and green paint poured on her. The date March 8 was written at the site. It was thought the vandalism was related to International Women’s Day which is held on that date. She was covered with red paint on May 30, 2017 with the words “Danmark defend the whales of the Faroe Islands.” Two weeks later she was covered in blue and white paint and the words “Befri Abdulle” written out. It is not clear what was intended by this statement.

Resolution

Irene Gnata, 92, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to parents Arthur and Marie Winters, on August 20, 1926. She was a graduate of Benson High School in Omaha.

Irene married Peter Gnata on April 8, 1953, in Marshalltown, Iowa. They lived a majority of their married life in Des Moines, Iowa, where Irene was very active in church and local organizations in addition to working as a secretary in law offices and insurance offices. In 1995, Irene and her husband moved to Lincoln. They were members of First Plymouth Congregational Church; Irene was a member of P.E.O. Chapter EE and the Danish Sisterhood.

Irene is survived by daughter and son-in-law Jane and Jim Nyffeler of Lincoln, granddaughter Jennifer Nyffeler of Lincoln, and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Peter, and her two brothers. A memorial service was held on Thursday, December 27, at Roper and Sons ‘O’ Street Chapel, 4300 ‘O’ Street. Irene will be missed by the members of Lodge #90.

Resolution

The Sisters of Solvang lodge 177 are sorry to report the loss of our long time member Jean Madsen.

She was born 9-15-1936 and passed away on 1216-2019.

In 1969 Jean and husband Vern moved back to Solvang, where they raised their two children .

Jean became a sisterhood member in 1971 and was very active while they lived in the Valley.

In 1977 she served as president and the members always enjoyed her warm personality and her willingness to volunteer and help where she could.

Jean was the kind of member everyone would love to have, she will be missed.
