Happy Valentine’s Day!

It seems that the Danes and we in the U.S. are not that different when it comes to Valentine’s Day. In Denmark it’s celebrated too, although generally thought of as a day for what they refer to as youngsters between ages 18-30.

I think if you were to look at the US, the most “fun” age for enjoying the holiday are for the little ones, school age between say 5 and 17, when little cards with funny or cute poems are exchanged with classmates. However, bottom line, it’s a day to celebrate love and joy, and we can all use some of that regardless of our age.

The National Board is gearing up for our Spring Board Meeting, which will be in Vancouver, Canada March 8-11th. And as in usual fashion, if you have any notes of praise or concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out to myself or any other board member and share that so we can bring it up at the meeting and discuss it. We will be planning our presentations for District Conventions, and often those ideas come right out of what our members are having concerns with. So, please share!

Lastly, please be sure and watch the deadlines for scholarships and camp grants.

They will be here before you know it and you don’t want to miss out.

Dear Sisters, I hope you are all well and looking forward to the coming springtime. I know that I am!

The Danish Sisterhood News is a wonderful way to stay connected with Lodges near and far.

But we also want it to be a way for each of us to learn more about Denmark, Danish culture, and Danish heritage. I know that in my two years as Editor, I have definitely learned a lot and I’m looking forward to learning even more.

This is where all of you come in. We want to continue our lodge updates in each issue as usual–so make sure your lodge sends in an update! We want to know what all of you are up to.

We also want to include fun facts, historical information, stories about our Sisterhood members and their heritage, recipes, Danish language tips, Danish-American events and more!

Send in your stories or even your ideas and we’ll do our best to include them!

News from Princess Marie Lodge #86 Philadelphia In October we gathered at Birthe’s home in Glen Mills, PA for our monthly lodge meeting. Our meeting was co-hosted by Birthe and Bente.

We planned our 2018 calendar at the October meeting. We all decided Lodge 86 will continue to meet the 3rd Saturday of the month in our members’ homes except in September we’re planning on attending the popular theatre production Brigadoon in Delaware. Natural disasters in many parts of our country moved our lodge to donate money for disaster relief. We are here to support all of our sisters in need during these difficult times. After the meeting we enjoyed a light lunch, several variations of quiche, a tasty salad prepared by Annette followed by dessert and coffee.

In November our lodge meeting was held at Celeste’s home in Rydal, PA. Our secretary read an invitation from the EGC to attend the 90th EGC convention in Connecticut April 13-15.

This year the EGC convention will be co-hosted with the EGC lodges and the EGC officers. Each lodge is being asked to participate by coordinating an activity during the convention. Our lodge decided to host the Friday night reception. Any suggestions or proposals to change any of the EGC By-Laws will be given to our delegate. Inge Olsen was elected as our delegate to the convention and Birthe Olesen as our alternate delegate. Eve Kramp, our Lodge Vice-President and Lodge President Inge Olsen’s daughter shared her Danish Connection with us. Thank You Eve for sharing your Danish Connection with all of us. Eve’s witty description of her blended ancestry, her appreciation of Denmark and her Danish heritage was a pleasure for all of us to hear. Eve’s biography will be added to Lodge 86 collections of biographies written by our lodge sisters. After the meeting we enjoyed pork sandwiches and salads provided by Celeste and a very scrumptious dessert prepared by our talented baker, Bente Ferguson.

Our year ended with plenty of fun and fellowship. On December 2 Princess Marie Lodge held their annual Christmas party in Glen Mills PA. This is our 7th Christmas Party at the WindDanish Sisterhood News, February 2018

sor Condominium Party Room. We were 33 and ready to kick off the holiday season to celebrate with good people, food and drink. Red tablecloths covered the tables with colorful and creative centerpieces topped with a candle creating the truest expression of hygge. At each person’s place settings was a small miniature handmade Christmas tree topped with a yellow star, gift 4

bag filled with goodies and a large cookie lollipop decorated like the Danish flag with red and white icing. Keeping with tradition, we began our Christmas party with traditional Danish Smorgasbord open-faced sandwiches, Aquavit, Carlsberg beer and soda. All followed with Risalamonde, cookies, coffee, tea and more—it couldn’t be better. A highlight of the party was dancing around the Christmas tree singing beloved Christmas songs in Danish and English.

Christmas gift exchange entertained us with some interesting twists. It was Susanne’s birthday that day as well, a double reason to celebrate giving cause for another song: “Happy Birthday Susanne”!

News from Danish Sisterhood Dagmar Lodge #4, Chicago Dagmar Lodge #4 started 2018 with an “After Holidays” party hosted on Saturday, January 13 at Nora and Per Bogehegn’s lovely home in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Thirty-nine members and guests enjoyed visiting together and eating delicious pork loin and ham entrees plus potluck sides and dessert.

The lodge’s first meeting was scheduled on Sunday, February 18 at the Knights of Columbus in Arlington Heights, IL. Following the meeting, the members participated in a Fastelavn party with The Danish American Athletic Club (DAAC) at this location. DAAC is a big supporter of Danish and Scandinavian organizations in the Chicago area and our Lodge has enjoyed partnering with DAAC on this event for the past few years.

The lodge’s first fundraising event, our annual Winter Luncheon at the Svithoid Hall in Chicago, was scheduled for March 4. Proceeds from this and other events in 2017 enabled our Lodge to contribute to the National Sisterhood scholarship, grant, and disaster relief funds plus be a sponsor for major events

Dike, Iowa Lodge #176 We met on December 11th for our annual Christmas party. Several holiday games were enjoyed as well as our traditional dancing around the Christmas tree. We were especially pleased to have Svend and Elin Koch with us, and were delighted that their son could push Svend around in his wheel chair to participate as well. A delicious lunch was enjoyed by all.

After more than 55 years, it was decided that our lodge would dissolve. We have had many precious memories of our times together and will miss the fellowship of our dear Sisters.

Several of our members will join another lodge but our hearts will long remember our dear friends from lodge 176.

While visiting with one of our Lodge Sisters, Debbie Henke, she asked me about Danish children’s books. Her question brought to mind one of my son’s favorite books as a little boy, Miss Jaster’s Garden. It was about 40 years ago while browsing the children’s section of a local bookstore that this book caught my eye. On the cover was a lovely old villa on the seacoast surrounded by a garden and in the garden flew the Danneborg.

The book tells the story of a older lady with failing vision who while planting her spring garden seeds drops several seeds on the back of hedge hog who lived in her garden. The seeds germinate and grow into lovely flowers. Then one day Miss Jaster’s garden runs away. The book is obviously set on the English seacoast, so what was the Danish flag doing in the garden? I never thought to explore this question, at least not back then. But when I told Debbie about the book the question again came up. The book was written and illustrated by N. M. Bodecker and in that bit of information lay the answer.

N. M. Bodecker was born in Copenhagen in 1922.

When asked what the initials stood for he would jokingly respond “Nothing Much” or “Never Mind”. In reality it stood for Niels Mogens. Educated in Denmark he emigrated to the United States after World War II.

A talented illustrator, for years his work appeared in Harpers, the Saturday Evening Post, Esquire and Holiday magazines. But perhaps he is best remembered for the books of children’s poetry which he wrote and illustrated. Bodecker also illustrated numerous books including the well-known “Half Magic” series by Edward Eager and many children’s books by other authors. A full listing of books he wrote and/or illustrated can be seen at the end of this article.

On the Michelson Gallery page is written the following regarding Bodecker, “ Bodecker’s book illustrations are whimsical and witty, and his magazine work is often gently mocking and political in tone. Detailed and yet highly stylized, his ink drawings often caricature the adult’s folly while depicting children as the more reasonable characters.

Bodecker has had a great influence on many young artists of both his day and our own. He is admired internationally for his fluid lines, which manage to be both serious and humorous at the same time.” Has there ever been a better description of Danes and their humor?

Bodecker won two Christopher Awards for poetry in

1974 and 1976. A little like Dr. Seuss, his poems were often nonsense rhymes. For example, one of his books is call “A Person From Britain Whose Head was the Shape of a Mitten.”

He also had a book of Danish nursery rhymes that he translated and illustrated called “It’s Raining Said John Twaining.”

After immigrating to the United States he lived in New York City and Westport, Connecticut for 20 years before moving to Hancock, New Hampshire where he died on February 1 at the age of 66.

Most of the books he wrote and illustrated are available on Amazon, but it looks like most are out of print.

Danish Valentine’s Day Traditions

2018 Danish Sisterhood Island Tour

Valentine’s Day in Denmark is celebrated in a very conventional way. Some sweet and romantic traditional activities are associated with the festival’s celebration. Youngsters take proper care to follow the traditions to have a successful and romance filled love life. The three most popular traditions of Valentine’s Day are: Lover’s Card The tradition of ‘lover’s card’ is the most popular and romantic Valentine’s Day custom in Denmark. Earlier, these cards came in the form of transparent cards which reflected the picture of a lover presenting his beloved a wonderful gift when it was kept in front of light. Now any card is called a Lover’s Card. Every card shop is stocked up with colorful and musical lover’s card with charming Valentine messages.

Custom of White Flowers People celebrate the custom of White Flower with immense love and care. As per the tradition, people send white flowers called ‘snowdrops’ to their friends and lovers.

Tradition of Gaekkebrev Young couples also write special love poems, beautiful romantic love notes and some funny poems known as ‘gaekkebrev’. It is customary for the sender of gaekkebrev to pen down a rhyme for his beloved.

He is not required to put his name on it. He signs the message with dots for the lady. Now, the girl who receives the card is supposed to guess the name of the sender. If she is able to guess the right name, then she is rewarded with an ‘Easter Egg’ on that very year.

Valentine’s Day Celebrations in Denmark

Valentine’s Day is celebrated with great parties and get togethers all over Denmark. Different flowers, gifts and cards are sent across the world to the near and dear ones. In Denmark, various Valentine events take place such as musical concerts, display shows, game shows and art exhibitions take place. People book party halls and restaurants for the celebration with their Valentine. Some people love to visit the Little Mermaid, Den Lille Havfure in Copenhagen and the famous Tivoli amusement park specially on Valentine’s Day while some plan special Valentine at an appealing holiday spot.

There is still room for more travel happy people to join us for the 2018 Danish Island Tour. Don’t miss out on a great chance to see some of the less known “corners” of Denmark!

Due to a large convention in Copenhagen just at the time when are to meet for our tour there has been a few minor changes to the original plan.

Benedikte Ehlers has found it necessary to move the meeting place from the Wake Up Hotel in Copenhagen to the Zleep Hotel Airport in Kastrup near the airport – but still only 1.7 miles from the city center. This decision was made because the convention has caused the hotel prices in the city to soar and rooms to be hard to find – and because of the proximity to the airport.

Assuming that several of the tour participants will be arriving in Denmark on September 19, and therefore may need accommodations for the night to be ready for the 9:30 a.m. start on the 20th, Benedikte has suggested that the ”meet and greet” information meeting be held at 6:30 pm on the 19th at the Zleep Hotel.

She also suggested that it would be nice to have dinner together that night, and she would be willing to arrange to have dinner delivered to the hotel or, if the group prefers, take us to a restaurant in the area, allowing for a time and place to get to know each other – and to renew friendships from previous tours.

Benedikte has agreed to facilitate hotel reservations for the night of Sept. 19th for those who would like that. Please note that neither the hotel room at the Zleep hotel nor the dinner is included in the price of the tour. The actual tour does not start until September 20th, 2018. If you wish to have Benedikte reserve a room for you at Zleep Hotel, please let me know, and I will contact her with your wishes.

For your information, the Zleep Hotel Airport is located at Løjtegårdsvej 99, 2770 Kastrup, Denmark.

Resolution Margaret Christensen Navarette passed away April 26, 2017. She was predeceased by parents Viggo and Elisabeth Terese Christensen. A member of Lodge #142 for 52 years. She was also a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and a participant in the Four Seasons Walking Club. She was predeceased by her daughter Karen and is survived by four grandchildren.

Lorelei Marie Hanson Fynboe passed away on June 21, 2017. She was the daughter of Norman and Madeline Bernstorff Hanson. A faithful member of Lodge #142 for 52 years. She was a retired RN having worked in nursing all her life. A member of Nimmonsbury Methodist Church, Red Hats and a skilled Scrabble player. She is survived by her husband Roy, son Scott, and brother Norman.

These Sisters will be greatly missed and will always be with us.
