I hope this month’s newsletter finds you all enjoying the new year. We have so many new things going on it’s difficult to focus on one area.

As a cost saving effort, the next National Board meeting will be held in San Francisco, near the airport. March 2nd – 5th. So, as usual, if you have anything you’d like brought before the entire board, please don’t hesitate to send it to me so I can be sure it’s brought up in our meeting. We do enjoy hearing from you with your thoughts and ideas.

One of the items we discuss at the spring board meeting is what information and guidance we can offer to lodges at the upcoming District Conventions. If there is something your lodge has an interest in, this is your opportunity to share with us so we can include your ideas. You should be seeing which National Board member is scheduled to attend your conventions, as we publish that in the newsletter. Please reach out to that Board Member with information about your convention, so they can be sure and have their registration in to you, you can provide them with the details they need to attend, and make the investment of the Sisterhood in them attending worthwhile.

We have received our itinerary for the 2018 tour of Denmark. We are refining the information and will be publishing that information very soon.

We will promote it outside of our organization as well as a membership effort, so by providing you the information first, it gives you and your friends an opportunity to lock down a spot before it sells out. Be on the lookout for that coming soon!

Lastly, please be careful out there…the extreme weather seems to have hit everywhere. Enjoy a bit of Hygge with your Sisters and stay safe!

Dear Sisters, I think that one of the best things that Danes do is that they dare to dream. Some of the most inventive, interesting, and wonderful things in the world have come out of Denmark, and yet many people have no idea. But at least we do! And that means we can share these wonderful ideas, creations, and pieces of information with everyone else.

Danes have invented and worked on ideas such as: Lego bricks (who doesn’t love Legos?); the loudspeaker; major contributions on the use of insulin in the medical field; Skype video call software (founded by a Dane and a Swede); Danish modern furniture; and so much more.

Denmark has been home to great thinkers and writers, scientists and architects. Only in Denmark can you find (what I believe to be) one of the happiest places in the world–Tivoli. And only the Danes can boast of their unique cuisine including smØrrebrØd, æbleskiver, flæskesteg, rundstykker, and more.

Where would the Danes be, and where would we be, without that daring initiative to dream and to dream big?

This issue celebrates that: from our lodges who continue to celebrate Danish heritage to our members who are continuing the dream their ancestors had of starting a new life in America; and from fun facts about Tivoli, a place for dreamers, to our own Danish Sisterhood News being dreamt up and becoming a reality 70 years ago. I hope you enjoy what we’ve pulled together this month. And don’t forget, Sisters and Brothers–dare to dream!

Princess Marie Lodge #86 Plans 89th Convention

Princess Marie Lodge, # 86, of Philadelphia, the city of “Sisterly Love” cordially invites all members and friends to attend the 89th EGC District Convention on 3/31/2017—4/2/2017. The weekend will be full of laughter and excitement as we rekindle old friendships and make new friends.

The Convention will be held at the Hampton Inn and Suites located at 40 State Farm Drive, Glen Mills PA 19342. We have secured and blocked rooms at the Hampton Inn and Suites. You must identify yourself as being part of the Danish Sisterhood of America to receive the group rate. You must book your room by 2/20/2017 to receive the group rate. The hotel offers a free breakfast for guests staying at the hotel.

Our program will begin on Friday with the arrival of members to the hotel. The con-

vention will open for business at 9am on Saturday.

On Saturday we will have installation of officers. A Saturday evening banquet will be held at the Concordville Inn, located very close to the hotel.

We are asking each lodge to make a basket to raffle off at the convention or make a $50.00 cash donation. The money collected from the basket auction and lodge donations will go directly to the EGC to offset travel expenses for the delegates. We will not be having a white elephant table. Instead we will have a Chinese auction and a Grand Prize Raffle. We have many wonderful Danish raffle gifts and auction prizes.

After breakfast on Sunday morning we have arranged a field trip to Longwood Gardens. Plenty of great food and entertainment will be happening throughout the weekend. We hope you and your lodge members will plan to join us for a wonderful weekend with Danish sisters from the eastern coast.

Amber Lodge Looks Ahead to 2017 January 21, 2017 Amber Lodge #186 met at Evelyn Matthies Studio in Brainerd, MN. The 2017 officers and trustees were elected. Amber Lodge President Gylling charted out for attendees the Lodge expenses and income over the last 5 years. This led to a discussion of what members would like to see planned for the coming year’s programs. Several ideas were brought up for a 2017 plan. They included having a guest speaker from The Sons of Norway, sharing of Danish cookbooks, and visiting a Danish Language Village. Ideas were also suggested for community outreach within Central Minnesota.

In the past Amber Lodge has made a donation to the local animal shelter, collected games for

children for a local jail ministry, and supported the Lakes Area Music Festival. Amber Lodge plans to continue the 2017 program planning at the February meeting. I am looking forward to seeing what activities and speakers are decided on for the year. I enjoy reading in The Danish Sisterhood News what other Lodges are doing in their communities, and what they have as programs throughout the year. It is a good resource for planning new activities and speakers for lodges throughout the coming year.

News from Princess Marie Lodge #86, Philadelphia, PA January Update Saturday January 21, our first meeting of the New Year was held at Sister Pat Malloy’s home, in Ambler PA. We decided to eat lunch prior to the meeting. Pat served us roasted chicken, prepared perfectly, accompanied by potato salad and a healthy assortment of vegetables. Scrumptious homemade brownies and small pastries for dessert with coffee capped off the lunch as we started our meeting.

The business portion of the meeting mainly focused on our upcoming EGC convention to be held at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Glen Mills PA. On March 31st, we will have a wine and cheese reception accompanied by live music to welcome our delegates and guests. The business portion of the convention will begin Saturday April 1st at 9:00 am. Sunday we are planning a

trip to Longwood Gardens.

During the Convention, delegates and guests will have an opportunity to participate in a Chinese Auction. Many wonderful items will be auctioned throughout the day. The EGC Basket Raffle and Grand Prize Raffle tickets may be purchased throughout the convention. Saturday evening we will have election of officers and a dinner banquet at The Concordville Inn. After the banquet we will return to the hotel for some unique entertainment, one of America’s favorite games; plenty of prizes for our winners!

The weekend will be full of laughter and excitement as we rekindle old friendships and make new friends.

70th Anniversary Vintergækken, lodge 168 is excited to announce we will be celebrating our 70th anniversary in February at the same time we have our installation. Supreme President Christine Miller and Supreme Secretary Jennie Miller signed our charter 2/2/1947. One of the 14 founding members, Frida Schmidt Stenderup, is mother to one of our current members Verner Stenderup. Verner and his wife Birthe Stenderup in addition to their family, continue the tradition of promoting and supporting our Danish heritage.

The event will be celebrated in true Danish style with kransekage and Kijafa, a welcome cocktail “Snowfall in Denmark” based on a wonderful aquavit “Valhalla” created by our sister Kirsten Bellur and of course special Danish dishes washed down with Carlsberg.

Tivoli Virtual Lodge #300 News A NEW YEAR, A NEW CHAPTER by 300 member Susanne Hohlen Monticello, Minnesota shohlen@uslink.net

In looking at the weather forecast for the next few months, I am afraid I’ll have to resort to inside hobbies unless I feel like challenging the frigid temps and risk getting frost bitten.

Fortunately, I have always loved reading, an interest I acquired early on as a child frequenting the library in Hornslet, Denmark, where I grew up.

I also recall my parents emphasizing the importance of learning to read. So, reading was neither a chore nor strenuous but exciting and a refuge during the difficult teenage years, as I did not belong to the group of popular girls at all.

For years I was a loyal follower of Oprah’s Book Cub, enjoying many of her recommendations, but kind of losing touch with the Danish literary front. It was actually our former Sisterhood President, Marcia Jante, who introduced me to the Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, whose books are very much in line with the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s Dragon Tattoo trilogy (rather gruesome at times).

Reading has now become a little bit of a luxury. Working with computers every day is hard on the eyes, causing tired eyeballs at night. So, vacation allows for guilt-free reading.

Time to head south again, this time with Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen* in my suitcase. Good thing I was reading this book during full daylight, as it completely lives up to its reputation as a thriller and page-turner.

The Department Q series originally began in Danish in 2007 with Kvinden i Buret translated in 2011 into English as Keeper of Lost Causes. The series (now a total of 6

books) follows Carl Morck, one of the best homicide detectives in Copenhagen, who has been promoted to the cold case department. Then a hail of bullets destroyed the lives of two fellow cops, and Carl—who didn’t draw his weapon— blames himself.

So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl’s only company is a stack of Copenhagen’s coldest cases. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: a liberal politician who vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn’t dead …yet.

Another Danish author of recent times who has captured my interest is Elsebeth Egholm, a Danish journalist and best-selling author of the crime fiction novels and a series portraying journalist and crime solver Dicte Svendsen. This series is taking me back to my own college days in the city of Aarhus revisiting many familiar places. At least two of her books have been translated into English, and the series is available on Nexflix with English subtitles.

Enjoy your winter reading. I know I will. *Carl Valdemar Jussi Henry Adler-Olsen (born August 2, 1950) is a Danish author, publisher, editor and entrepreneur. Jussi Adler-Olsen’s career is characterized by his great involvement in a wide range of media related activities.

5 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT TIVOLI GARDENS

Tivoli Gardens was opened on August 15, 1843 by Georg Carstensen after being granted permission by the King. He continued to look for new ideas to keep the public interested in the gardens. Georg Carstensen died from pneumonia in January 1857.

Hans Christian Andersen was at the opening of Tivoli Gardens. The gardens inspired him to write his beloved fairy tale, the Nightingale.

The Peacock Theatre, which still stands near the entrance of the gardens today, was built in 1874. Above the stage is a motto engraved in Chinese letters that says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shared joy with the people.â&#x20AC;?

Her Majesty Queen Margrethe often creates the sets and costumes for performances at the theatre. These include Thumbelina, The Tinderbox, Love in the Dustbin, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, and more.

Early on, Walt Disney visited Tivoli and was inspired by the atmosphere of the park. He then turned this inspiration into his very own amusement parks.

In 1994, Christmas in Tivoli opened for the first time and in 2006, Tivoli introduced Halloween into its seasonal celebrations.

70 Years of the Danish Sisterhood News

Christian understanding and may all our deliberations uphold the high standard of our splendid organization.

To all of us the welfare and progress of the Danish Sisterhood means much. We plan, not alone for the present, but we work for the future. As we have profited by the work of the founders, so shall they who follow us profit by our accomplishment, and our organization grow stronger.

Last month, the new officers in all our lodges were installed in their respective offices. Their responsibilites and duties will be many. The wefare of the lodge will rest mainly on their shoulders, but let us not forget that the strength of the lodge depends on the regular attendance of each member and taking an active part in fulfilling the obligations of the Sisterhood and on the confidence and cooperation given the officers.

Remember, the real essence of the fraternal spirit is to be ever mindful of the welfare of others, to bring cheer and gladness into other’s lives.

So let us put heart and soul into every handclasp.

Greet each others as sisters and brothers and enjoy the love of the friends we have made through our organization.

May we all do our best to make the year 1947 a very successful one for the Danish Sisterhood.

Happy 70th Birthday, Danish Sisterhood News!

When I received an email from our National Treasurer, Carol Faruolo, stating that she had found some old editions of the DSN, I didn’t know what to expect. But I asked her to please send them on. I was surprised and blown away by what I read in these old editions and wanted to share them with the entire Sisterhood (and maybe some of you even received this newsletter long ago!).

The first issue of the Danish Sisterhood News was published on February 15, 1947.

Above, you will see an image of part of the first page, with the Letter from the Supreme President. If you can’t make out what it says, the letter states: In this, the first issue of the Danish Sisterhood News, I want to take the opportunity to wish all our members and their families a Happy New Year, with health and prosperity.

I found this letter particularly inspiring and

also found it to be not so different from a letter we may read in the present day. Our goals as a Sisterhood have not changed and I’m confident that we will continue on upholding the same beliefs and standards for years to come.

The Danish Sisterhood would like to offer assistance with your lodge activities by providing wonderful Danish movies for your enjoyment.

You can email or snail-mail your request to check out a movie. Keep in mind that we will do our best to mail you the DVD in time for your event; we only ask that you return it within 3 days following your event so that it can be shared quickly with another lodge. The Sisterhood will help by lending the DVD at no cost to your lodge with the exception of the return postage. Please provide care when handling the DVD so that all may enjoy them. Thank you. Norma Erceg: A Life Remembered The Sisters of Lodge #36 are saddened by the sudden loss of our Sister Norma Erceg on December 22, 2016 at her home in Edison, New Jersey.

Norma was born on April 19, 1928 in Fords, New Jersey to Ellen and Otto Christensen.

Norma grew up in New Jersey and her first job was for the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company in Perth Amboy as a telephone operator. She married her husband Mitchell, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;loveâ&#x20AC;? of her life in 1948. Norma started a family. She had three daughters, Michele Erceg, Jacqueline Markel, and Janine Apruzzese.

Norma eventually worked for Eastern Airlines in the reservation center. This allowed her family to travel the world.

Throughout her life she cared about the well-being of her community and worked to save the Thomas Edison Memorial Park, preserving the historical wooded refuge for future generations.

Norma also enjoyed politics, taught adults to read. After retirement, Norma participated in craft shows with her husband selling her unique hand-knit baby sweaters, hats and socks.

Norma was preceded in death by her Mother and Father Ellen and Otto Christensen, and her dear Sister Edna Harkay, and her husband Mitchell.

Norma was a member of Freja Lodge #36, she was initiated on December 11, 1981.

The Sisters of Freja Lodge #36 will greatly miss our Sister Norma. We will drape our Charter at the next meeting and have a Memorial Service.
