Sindy Mikkelsen, National President It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I hope all of you are ready for the holiday, baking your favorite Danish treats, and spending time with loved ones.

We had a really productive fall Board Meeting in Omaha! This is the big one, where the Board reviews page by page the constitution, looking for changes that we believe need to be made. Fortunately, we didn’t have too many changes we wanted to propose. That said, this is also the time where your lodges should be doing the same thing, making proposals that will be added to our stack, and then sent out to delegates to review with their lodges prior to convention. This is your opportunity to make changes that are important to our members.

And, since the Board is essentially hosting the National Convention next October, this was a meeting filled with planning. So much to do, and although October seems a long way off, it certainly isn’t. We will be reaching out to some of you and a few lodges within driving distance seeking help with specific items. We do hope we can count on you, and are so appreciative of those that already reached out to us asking if they can help. Awesome!

For those that have been elected as delegates, you’re going to want to be sure and read the newsletter every month and watch for mailings that will provide more details for you. One thing you can start doing now that will help, is to work on getting a photo of yourself for use in the Convention program. It’s wonderful when it is a professionally (like Sears kind of thing) done photograph, but we don’t want you to go to a lot of expense. When you do send a photo, it will need to be a clear photo with good lighting, no group photos, and it only needs to be from the shoulders up. Color is best, but we can accept black and white. More information will be provided as to who to send it to and when

The Board was invited to the Museum of Danish America and received updates on the progress of integrating our items into the collection. It’s the largest single collection given to the Museum at one time and is going to take a special effort to make happen. We will be working with the Museum to obtain a grant to fund some added staff to really get the collection cataloged and properly preserved. The State of Nebraska offers a matching grant program and the Museum, along with our membership will be doing some fundraising efforts along those lines. More information to come on this.

I will close for now with a simple wish for a wonderful holiday season, and a New Year of great things!

Dear Sisters, Another year is wrapping up and it’s so hard to believe! To celebrate the holiday season and the end of 2018, I have decided to host my very first Julefrokost with some dear friends. It’s coming up fast and I’m very excited for it–not only because of the delicious food but because I get to spend time with people I love and share my Danish heritage with them. It will be quite the celebration!

I look back upon this year and am so very thankful for the Danish Sisterhood and for the DSN which connects me to so many sisters near and far. I know that 2019 will be filled with even more fun, interesting, and exciting news to share.

But for now, I will keep it short and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May all of you spend some special time with loved ones, enjoy a little relaxation time, and have a happy, healthy new year.

The ornaments are over 100 years old and one must keep a watchful eye on the lit candles and a bucket of water nearby. After the candles burn down each evening, they are replaced with new ones daily.

We look forward to learning more about our Danish heritage this coming year and are excited to have the Danish Sisterhood National Convention within an easy drive of our area next fall. We plan on organizing our Lodge history together this year, so we can pass on the 134+ years of info since Lodge #3 began, to the Danish American Museum.

We wish you a pleasant hyggestund in 2019.

Chicago Lodge #4 Prepares for the Holidays The Danish Sisterhood Lodge No. 4 (Chicago) had a busy November which included two Danish baking sessions.

At the first session, Caroline Christensen hosted klejner making at her home in Chicago.

At the second session, Kathy Brown hosted Christmas cookie baking at her home in Huntley. Kransekage cookies, one of the four types of cookies prepared by Sisterhood members, were especially delicious. The Kransekage cookie recipe, which was shared

by Bente Rasmussen, can also be used to make Danish wedding cake.

Besides being fun social events, the two sessions yielded dozens of cookies which were sold at the International Christmas Market at Estonian House in Riverwoods, IL as a fundraiser.

Among the Sisterhood bakers were (L to R) Jan Glintborg, Kirsten Pedersen, Bente Rasmussen, Inge Krogh, and Kathy Brown.

NOVEMBER MEETING OF NORTHSTAR LODGE #100 The Nov. 14, 2018, meeting of Lodge #100 took place at Hope Lutheran Church at noon with six ladies in attendance. A delicious pizza, salad and dessert lunch was enjoyed by all.

Meeting opened with Pledge of Allegiance and the Opening Song. Minutes approved as read. Only one article of correspondence, concerning the National Convention next October in Omaha, Nebraska. We are not sure we will have delegates attending.

One of the members asked about Schol-

arships for her granddaughter and was given information about them.

We collected the hats and mittens we had collected to donate to Dept. of Human Services.

Next meeting is our Christmas dinner at Liberty Lanes in Sandusky on Dec. 9th, with a speaker from the Rescue Mission coming to talk with us

Updates from Brainerd, MN Lodge #186 The Amber Lodge sisterhood kicked off the Christmas season at our November meeting. The morning was spent baking several 8 varieties of favorite Christmas cookies. The meeting was held at Trinity Lutheran Church to take advantage of larger ovens. A big thanks to Nealna Gylling for organizing the cookie event again this year.

The additional baking tips and history attached to each recipe make this a fun and informative morning. We were also joined by special guests

Linda and Rolland Buck along with their son-inlaw Dale and granddaughter Isabel.

The day finished up with a shared potluck lunch and business meeting. We look forward to our Christmas party in December.

Cheryl’s daughter, Joyce Lynne, after finishing school, went to work at the Federal CHERYL ANNE (BERNER) Center where she met a very nice gentleman, SANFORD John Howard Sanford. She set her mother up 09/18/1929 - 08/25/2018 on a blind date with John. Several years later, on March 20, 1976, John and Cheryl married.

Resolution The Sisters of Danner Lodge #6 were saddened by the passing of Jean E. Aulner on September 15, 2018, exactly 20 year sto the date that she joined our Lodge. She was 91 years young.

Jean was born August 24, 1927 in Harlan, Iowa. She grew up on a farm in Little Sioux, Iowa with her sister Opal and brother Ivan. Jean moved to Omaha, Nebraska to work for the phone company and later for Bekins Van & Storage.

Jean and her husband John had four children, Floy (Scott) Jones, Cleo (Jerry) Covey, John III (Anne) and Alan. She had 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband John and Aulner Jr., sister Opal, and Danish Sisterhood News, December 2018

parents Charlie & Katherine Jensen. She is also survived by brother Ivan Jensen.

Jean taught Sunday school, she was a room mother, Cub Scout den mother, involved with the PTA, member of the Garden Club, enjoyed skiing, fishing, and traveling.

Jean was an accomplished piano player, an avid bowler, loved her yard & flower gardens.

Jean was very proud of her Danish Heritage & she sent birthday greetings to Lodge members until her death.

We will greatly miss her kindness, her willingness to help, and her smile.

Resolution Rita Catherine Nielsen, 91, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away peacefully in Colorado Springs, CO on March 14, 2017. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska on June 15, 1925 and retired to Colorado Springs in 1984.

While working at the phone company in 1946, Rita met her husband, James Nielsen, on his return from the European Theater of WWII. It was love at first sight and after a month, they were engaged. Their never-ending commitment to each other over 71 years of marriage was and will continue to be a true inspiration to anyone blessed enough to hear their story. Rita loved to laugh and passed along her sense of humor and fierce love for adventure to her family. She was a social butterfly that greatly enjoyed entertaining and traveling with her children and grandchildren. Rita showed all those that knew her, that regardless of circumstances, one could always stay young at heart.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory: her loving husband James Nielsen, her children Cathy Boone (Eldon), Jim (Margie), Steve (Jame), Suzi McIntire (Terry), and Maribeth Weems (Richard), as well as 22 precious grandchildren and 33 sweet great grandchildren.

Rita joined Lodge #6 on December 13, 1955. She loved to laugh, had a great sense of humor and was a social butterfly. w
