I hope this finds you all in good holiday spirits and looking forward to time with family and friends as we welcome in a new year. Personally, I’m looking forward to 2017, but must say 2016 was a successful year for the Sisterhood. We enjoyed our 2nd board meeting of this term in Elk Horn, Iowa to coincide with the transfer of our history to the museum. What a historical moment that was!

The following is a brief report/summary of our board meeting:

Vice President – Julie, partnering with our editor, reported that we’ve had the newsletter online now since this summer and have received many great comments about how nice it is to see it in color. As a board, we discussed how the future of the newsletter will be handled. At this point, unless we start to see a big drop in subscriptions we will continue to make it available online FREE. It’s a great opportunity for folks to see it earlier and it looks good! Additionally, we’re up and active on social media. Love it!

Treasurer – Carol reported that this year’s financial review by our accounting firm went very well. Investments are up, and we had a successful financial year with donations to scholarships and grants, as well as a profit on the trip to Denmark of $10,100.

Secretary – Glenda reported that we had a wonderful year with 101 new members! We have all of you to thank for that. Great job, keep it up! Additionally, she reported that she plans to get the annual reports out to the lodges in mid-November. We know that many lodges have spoken up and requested them earlier so they can manage their membership billings better.

We hear you! We also now have the 10-year pin, so when the reports come out you will find pins for 10, 25 and 50 years included. Time to plan celebrations for our members’ dedication to the Sisterhood.

Dear Sisters, Merry Christmas! Christmas is my favorite holiday. It’s always filled with joy, family, friends, giving of gifts, delicious food, and plenty of Danish traditions.

Throughout the years, my family has adopted many of the Danish Christmas traditions and I’ve also continued those myself since I’ve moved away from home. Our tree is decorated with Danish ornaments and a garland of Danish flags. We have nisser on our mantle, protecting our home and bringing us good luck. On the afternoon of Christmas Eve, I go to the Danish Christmas service in my hometown of Racine, WI and later that night, I make the traditional ris a l’amande for dessert.

Many fond memories are also a big part of why I love this holiday. Growing up, my paternal grandmother used to host Christmas Eve and the entire extended family would get together and open presents (as is the custom in Denmark to open presents on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas Day). Us kids would sing Christmas songs and play while the adults chatted and relaxed.

Fast-forwarding and I remember celebrating Christmas with the English Department in college–one of my professors being of Danish descent and teaching all of the students the words to Nu Har Vi Jul Igen while we held hands and circled the Christmas Tree.

Fast-forwarding again to now and I’ve begun my own traditions. My little Christmas tree is decorated with Danish ornaments and candles, I’ve made some julehjerter (Danish heart baskets), I have recipes ready to make cookies and ris a l’amande, and I’m embracing hygge as best as I can!

This issue of the Danish Sisterhood News has been very special to put together. So many of you have contributed greetings and stories for this holiday season.

I’ve also included the song Nu Har Vi Jul Igen for all of you to sing this holiday season. And lastly, this is my 12th issue of the DSN–one year has already passed since I’ve started!

Here’s to the next year of newsletters, stories, celebration of Danish heritage, and Sisterhood.

On the Cover Title: Christmas Nisser Photographer: Lauren C. Nielsen In Denmark, nisser are a very prominent Christmas tradition. Most homes have nisser put out during the holiday season. Nisser are what Americans would call gnomes. Before Santa Claus arrived in Denmark, the Danes had nissefar (the Gnome Father), nissekongen (the Gnome King), or julenisse (the Christmas gnome).

During the holidays, you don’t want to forget your julenisse! Be nice to him and leave some risengrØd out for him, then he’ll bring you good fortune throughout the year and maybe even help with chores! If you aren’t kind to him, you’ll have bad luck and he’ll play tricks on your household throughout the coming year.

The two nisser on the cover are two of my family’s nisser that we always place on our mantle. So far, they’ve brought us great luck!

Trustee 2 – Christina shared the results of scholarship and camp grant awards. Always great to know we are helping our youth succeed in their education experience, and our young members enjoy a camping experience that they may otherwise not have an opportunity to do. Great job!

Trustee 3 – Karin shared with us the final product on our newly produced Sisterhood brochure. This is an awesome brochure, one that will make you proud to share with your friends and family, and one they will see as modern and engaging. Karin also had our Sisterhood bookmarks redesigned with a similar fresh look. The bookmarks are available to lodges that wish to use them as a promotional item at public events. What a great way to share our organization with others. Additionally, those 101 new members were realized in large part due to Karin’s outreach work. Awesome!

Lastly, the big moving truck arrived at the museum! Many thanks to our Sisterhood member, Mandy Kirkland and her husband John, who drove from California to Iowa to safely deliver 133 years of history. The move cost the Sisterhood about $4,000, but we utilized the remaining archival funds (we did after all preserve our history with this move), and a bit from our Denmark trip profits, all of which was a fraction of what it would have cost to move a 12’ truck worth of artifacts with a private carrier. We knew it was safer if managed this way, and that was our primary goal.

Now that we’ve partnered with the museum we move into a phase where they will begin the long process of cataloging, recording and preserving our history for all time. As part of our partnership we want to support the museum with the encouragement of memberships so as individuals we can enjoy Sisterhood history. And lastly, we will begin working with the museum on the 2019 plans for our National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska. What fun that will be for all.

All I can say is that I’m truly blessed with an awesome board that works hard for the Sisterhood. We’re getting it done! We wish all our members, family and friends the happiest of holidays!

News from Princess Marie Lodge #86 Philadelphia, PA A meeting of the Danish Sisterhood Lodge #86 took place on Saturday, October 15 at sister, Celeste Cattie’s home, in Rydal, PA. We car pooled to Celeste’s for our monthly sisterhood meeting. Clear skies and warm weather, a perfect autumn afternoon for a drive.

We all enjoyed salads and sandwiches including home grown tomatoes and special pickled cucumbers from Celeste’s garden. Homemade Apple pie with whipped cream for dessert and of course kaffe.

Everything was delicious! Thank You Celeste!

Our lodge will be hosting the 89th annual convention of the Eastern General Committee (EGC) on March 31 through April 2, 2017. Convention planning is well underway!

We promise our delegates and guests plenty of food, entertainment and prizes.

The convention will be held at the Hampton Inn and Suites located in Glen Mills, PA. We hope you and your lodge members will plan to join us for a wonderful weekend with Danish sisters from the eastern seaboard.

Sunshine Lodge Gains New Member

Sunshine Lodge # 181 in Holiday, Florida, is proud to announce that we had our swearing in ceremony for our new member,

Emma Jensen, on Sunday, Oct. 16th. We are pleased to have Emma in our Lodge and she is already contributing with her knowledge of Denmark and Danish culture. She will be teaching us how to make the Danish Star ornaments.

We are so happy to have her with us! Welcome, Emma!

Nebraska/Colorado District Danish Sisterhood and Nebraska Brotherhood Convention October 7-8, 2016 Much planning and labor goes into a district convention; this year our travels took us to Omaha, Nebraska. A beautiful fall weekend, we met October 7-8. Both Danish Brotherhood Lodge No. 1 and Danish Sisterhood Danner Lodge No. 6, were the Convention hosts. Friday evening we gathered to eat a light meal, paired with wine and Danish beer. A great opportunity to see our Danish friends again, greeting them with hugs, renewing friendships and making new friends. For entertainment on Friday evening we welcomed the fantastic “Flatwater Drifters,” Sheryl Cuba (new member to Danner Lodge No. 6) and three other female string musicians, who performed Danish folk and old time music. A great time was had by all! Sheryl has learned several Danish tunes from fiddler Dwight Lamb of Onawa, Iowa; he also plays the Danish button accordion. Dwight’s father and grandfather played the fiddle, his great grandfather was a legendary fiddler in Denmark.

As breakfast and coffee perked us up on Saturday morning, our meeting got underway. Our usual business was conducted. Then it was time for the Delegate’s reports. The four Lodges present were Danner Lodge No. 6, Omaha, NE; Ellen Lodge No. 21, Denver, CO; Denmark’s Daughters Lodge No. 90, Lincoln, NE; and Western Star Lodge No. 113, Grand Island, NE. We listened to their ideas for programs, and interests: Hans Christian Andersen and his fairy tale stories; translating Danish words to English; history of Vikings in Denmark; and Scandinavian festivals. Together with charitable giving projects; music; sharing Danish cuisine; history; ancestry; and, celebrating special holiday traditions. Other activities included: reading articles in the DSS National newsletter; Danish newspaper articles; Lodge committees; making handcrafted items; and, a yearbook with Lodge membership and monthly activities.

Joining us from Beaverton, Oregon is our new National Trustee & Scholarship Chairman, Christina Sallee. She was born and raised in Denmark, and has been in the United States for 25 years. With a powerpoint presentation Christina noted various topics and updates including some of these: business conducted by the newly elected National Board in the first 6 months; improved market investments; Denmark trip; Newsletter information; more involvement with new technology; web site; attracting and keeping new members; scholarship programs; Tivoli Lodge No. 300; membership application; beneficiary change; and new items in the Marketplace Butikken. Thank you Christina, we enjoyed your friendship and happy that

you took the time to be with us in Nebraska!

Convention business continued with a memorial service for six Sisters who have passed in our District. Lovely ladies who will always be in our memory for their contributions and kind hearts. As a special celebration we recognized all of our Lodges that have been in existence for over 100 years. We have inherited this history, we must continue to keep our Lodges alive and well. For various reasons, all reported that they have had a rough year. Sharing good news, we have ten new members in our District. We are hopeful, 2017 will be a better year for everyone.

NE/CO District Officers were re-elected for the coming year: Past President Christine Jensen Hix, No. 21; President Vicki Bousquet, No. 90; Vice President Paula Bennett, No. 21; Secretary Jane Nyffeler, No. 90; Treasurer Donna Hansen, No. 90; Trustee Lois Baasch, No. 113; Marshal Shirley Oliver, No. 90. Appointed by the President, Historian Patricia Wissink, No. 90 and Correspondent Joan Tomlinson White, No. 90.

Early in the evening, cocktail time had arrived, we were serenaded by our Danish Sisters all born in Denmark, Birgitte, Dorthe, Inge, and Birthe. They sang happy Danish songs, all ending with SKAL. We laughed and had fun, we were so pleased that they traveled from Denver to be with us in Omaha! Meeting them reminded me of last October, when many of us attended the 2015 National DSS Convention in Denver. I was lucky enough to attend as a Delegate. Christine Jensen Hix, the Denver Danish Sisters and volunteers worked diligently for over a year or more in preparation for an incredible Convention. A big thank you to all of them! An added thank you to all of our past National Officers and newly elected Officers for their hard work and dedication. Greeting old friends, meeting new people—we had a fabulous time. I enjoyed every minute and learned so much.

Wrapping up our District Convention on Saturday evening, we enjoyed the traditional Danish pork roast and red cabbage dinner. Elected Sisterhood Officers were traditionally initialed. The evening concluded with viewing a movie, of Danish humorist and musician Victor Borge. We owe a sincere thank you to Nancy Jacobsen, and the Danish Sisters of Lodge No. 6, also Brotherhood Lodge No. 1, for planning and hosting this Convention. Great fun!

Celebrating with a Song Holder and Othellolagkage

It was not business as usual for the November meeting of Thyra Lodge #19 of Tacoma/Olympia Washington. Our hosts Inge and Mike Jones were celebrating Inge’s 75th birthday and the anniversary of their first meeting 50 years ago on Thanksgiving Day. As host and hostess, they wanted to do something special.

Inge, one of our authentic Danish treasures (born in Copenhagen), and her husband Mike often share Danish customs during our “Heritage Corner.” To mark this special occasion, Mike wanted to write a song and present it with a song holder. Inge suggested and made the “flower cake” and Mike made the holder for it. Inge heard the song for the first time at our meeting when Mike passed around copies for all of us to sing.

The words were written to a Beatles song that was popular in 1964, “I Saw Her Standing There.”

“Some of our members are not aware of this custom and I thought it would bring light to the customs in Denmark.” Mike explained, “Traditionally, Friends and family members get together to celebrate someone’s anniversary--especially 12 ½ (Copper) 25 (Silver) and 50 years (Golden).

25 years used to be the main celebration but with many people getting married late or getting divorced and remarried, the 12½-year anniversary is sort of taking over as the bigger celebration today. Round birthdays such as the 70th, 80th, or 90th are well celebrated. Songs are made of experiences in a person or couples lives and by the friends or family members. In Denmark traditional celebrations may last from the early morning to late in the evening and into the next

day. Inge and Mike’s 25th was celebrated in just that way.

In Denmark some people pay others to write their songs. But, for this occasion, Mike chose to write his own tribute to Inge. “The lyrics I wrote were about our fateful meeting that night 50 years ago,” he reports, smiling broadly. His lyrics say, “How could I dance with another (Ooh) when I saw her sitting there.

Regardless of who writes the song, the song holder usually has some relationship to the couple. In this case the cake signifies Inge’s birthday celebration, which also happened to fall at the same time as their first meeting. Inge baked and decorated a beautiful Othellolagkage- Othello Layered Cake--the “crème de la crème” of layered cakes, a true Danish classic.”

On milestone anniversaries neighbors, family and friends make an arch around the front door of the celebrants’ home. For the Copper Anniversary (12 ½ years), however, the arch circles only half way. In the early morning (between 6 and 7 A.M.) of the anniversary, folks gather to sing to the anniversary couple. Family members and neighbors are invited in to enjoy a breakfast of coffee, bread rolls and Danish pastry, and most likely a couple of Old Danish Bitters.

Coincidentally, members Glenn and Miriam Kelly also have “double cause” for celebration.

Miriam will turn 75 on December 9th and the Kellys will celebrate their 50th anniversary on December 28. Perhaps they will incorporate some of Danish traditions into their celebrations.

called to order by President, Carol Olsen, had a lot of business to cover. All officers except Melanie Berg were present. 14 sisters were in attendance, and 1 guest, Chuck Jensen.

Final plans were made for our Annual Holiday Bazaar, which was held on November 19th.

The bazaar is our annual event to raise money for scholarships. The bazaar was a great success with 31 vendors, our old and new treasures boutique, bake sale, raffle, door prizes, live Scandinavian folk music by John and Jane, a LEGO room for kids, and an on-going aebleskiver demonstration and sale. This year we added a running slide presentation, highlighting our lodge’s activities.

During the event, we signed up a new member and generated much interest in our warm-hearted lodge.

The LEGO room at our bazaar is a growing attraction. Membership in the Sisterhood has opened up new horizons for Nathan and Madeleine Richardson who will meet their Danish cousins for the first time in Legoland next summer.

DSS membership for children under 14 is free and a great way to introduce the next generation to our Danish heritage.

We voted to again support the Scandinavian Radio Hour with a $30 donation and to purchase a $12 Christmas greeting in the Danish Pioneer.

Among other things, we shared some fun facts about our lives from our membership tribute forms. We all smiled over shared memories of interacting with the beloved gorilla from Washington State—Ivan. (A bronze likeness of Ivan was

We set the date for our Danish cooking class, March 25, 2017.

We are also planning a tea party to celebrate our lodge’s 125th birthday at our May meeting in 2017.

We gave attention to our “sick and needy” sisters, especially welcoming Mike Jones with Cake Holder Inge McQueen back into our midst sporting her new external pacemaker and drawing into the circle a beloved member, who was recently a victim of assault and purse snatching. The Sisterhood can be a special place of comfort when life throws curve balls. It is good to be together.

NORTHSTAR LODGE #100 NOVEMBER MEETING

NEWS FROM DES MOINES LODGE #102

The Nov. 3, 2016, meeting of Lodge #100 took place at Hope Lutheran Church at noon, with six members present. Pastor Chris Laughlin joined us for lunch and returned grace before the pizza lunch put on by Ann Raven & Ila Welch.

Secretary and Treasurer reports approved as given. Plans for the Dec. 11th Christmas dinner were finialized at Liberty Lanes in Sandusky at 1pm. We discussed what we might do when we host the District meeting in the future.

Hats, mittens, gloves, etc. were brought to this meeting and they will be taken to the Department of Human Services to be given to their clients. $110 was taken from the Sunshine Fund to be sent in a Christmas Card to our family we are helping out.

Several of our members traveled to the Museum of Danish America for their Brown Bag luncheon in July. We enjoyed a great presentation by Carol Hausseman from Dana College. She spoke on a historical perspective of women athletes and coaches. This was in connection with the museum’s exhibit on “Sports for Sport’s Sake”. Shopping at the Danish museum and Windmill is always a bonus.

We will now hold our meetings at Luther Memorial Church fellowship hall. We had a very good attendance at our August meeting. Our delegates to the District convention will be Carol Rudisill and Erna Jensen with Carol Christiansen as alternate. Several of our members are planning on attending. We decided to divide our May Brunch profits with the Danish/American museum and Dorothy’s House which is a shelter in connection with Human Trafficking.

Diann Weinman presented our program for the evening called “Show and Tell”. First of all, we drew numbers for a beautiful Solvang, CA puzzle. Fern Faaborg was the winner. Then, she read two delightful poems by Nora Ephron. We were totally entertained.

Enumclaw Lodge #75 Keeps the Community Cozy!

The Sisters distributed the blankets to the rehab center inside the nursing home, where the activity director met them with open arms. He had a list of 26 people, in the long term care unit, who were the most in need.

September 2016 activity coordinator Carol Linger volunteered to head-up a team of Sisters to make and distribute fleece blanks to the Enumclaw Nursing Home. Perfect timing as the weather is getting chilly.

Carol gathered the materials and setup a work party. They even personalized the blankets by adding labels that said “Made by the Danish Sisterhood, Unity Lodge 75 for_________” and then with a felt marker wrote in the person’s name.

Everyone was surprised to be receiving a “free” blanket. Some wanted to know if they could buy them. A couple people in wheel chairs came looking for us to thank us again before we left.

One woman from Massachusetts couldn’t get over our generosity and wanted to know why they deserved them and how they could thank us. Carol told her they deserved them because they “lived there” and that she could thank us with a hug.

Unfortunately there were roommates who were not on “the list” and other residents who were in the hallways looking longingly at the “beautiful blankets”. Luckily the Sisters had brought some smaller throws. The “non-listed” were allowed to pick one of the smaller throws,

which relieved the touchy problem of not having enough big blankets for everyone.

When we were done, there were still 5 small throws left, so the staff finished distributing those. The staff was very appreciative and thanked us over and over.

In all it was a good day for everyone involved - both the givers and receivers.

This project was a wonderful way to give back to the community. Nice job Sisters!

Are you interested in historical preservation?

Do you enjoy helping people discover information about their past?

Would you like to partner with the Museum of Danish America?

Duties: Serve as liaison between the Sisterhood and the Museum of Danish America Submit one monthly article to the DSS News regarding Sisterhood historical artifacts & persons.

Research DSS records for genealogical information Partner with the Museum of Danish America to create historical displays to be used by local lodges and districts.

(Annual compensation provided.)
