Going on the National Association for Danish America (www.DanishAmerica.org)I am happy to see that many of you are able to meet again, and have meeting and events scheduled.

In Oregon our vaccination rate is above 70% which means restrictions have been removed, so we had a lodge komsammen at one of our member’s house. We had a great time, talking for hours, as many of us have not seen each other in over a year. It is good to be back, and it is good to have all of you back. Thank you for your patience, flexibility and caring which continues through this pandemic.

As we have had a lot of home quality time in the last year, I am sure you have been cleaning up, or at least looked through, your rooms, garages and attic space and probably found some Sisterhood treasures that your Lodge is not using any longer or has lost its former luster. I want to remind you not to dispose of these pieces and paper, but rather reach out to the Museum of Danish America (www.DanishMuseum.org) or the National Board as many of these pieces and papers needs to be preserved. As the items we donate to the museum cannot be “re-acquired”, we ask that you reach out to us first in regard to any Lodge emblems and pins received from the local lodge. Some of these items are very special to our organization, and we would like the chance to possibly re-gift to other lodges who may have a need.

I hope you can go outside to enjoy the weather and your local offerings. I am off to Portland to participate in a modern-day Clue mystery and take in some of the positive changes. I wish you all health and happiness.

Dear Sisters, I can't believe it's already August! This summer has flown by, at least for me.

My summer has been filled with many wonderful happenings as well as some challenges. I'm several months into a new job, which I enjoy immensely. I've also gotten to visit friends and family both near and far, and have even had a couple opportunities to eat delicious Danish food at Minneapolis' Danish American Center. While it's nice to go out and about, sometimes it's been nice to just take a night off and stay in. On those days, I've had the pleasure of watching shows, going through old photos, and even discovering some new Danish social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram. By the way, be sure to follow the Danish Sisterhood on both!

I thought it would be fun to share this amusing little anecdote with you all­—One evening the other week, I was talking with friends at a cookout and someone mentioned they hated ice in their beverages.

Another person said they loved ice! And a third person said, "Well, the Germans don't use ice in their beverages...do the Danes?" That friend turned to me with the question and I honestly didn't know...however, I pulled out my phone and sent a message right to my cousin in Denmark. Within minutes, I had an answer—the Danes don't usually put ice in their beverages! It only goes to show that there are so many things we can learn through our connections and heritage.

Strøget is a collection of streets in Copenhagen that are designated for pedestrians. No cars are allowed on these streets, and people from all over can be seen strolling along, visiting restaurants and shops. Strøget has been in existence since 1728. Next time you're in Danmark, be sure to go!

Resolution: Mary Mommer Mary Voss Mommer was born on October 23, 1953 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd and Marvel Voss. She married John Mommer in 1973. Their marriage was blessed with 8 children.

The family enjoyed many ski trips to Utah as well as water skiing competitions. Her husband passed away after their 40th anniversary.

Mary was active in the nearby Fredsville Lutheran Church in Dike, Iowa where she played bells, sang in the choir, helped teach Danish dances at summer Bible School, and often made aebleskiver for the annual church spring fundraisers.

Mary had a very strong zest for life and enjoyed being with people, often keeping them laughing with her bubbling personality. She was a long time member of Dike Lodge #176 of the Danish Sisterhood and transferred her membership to Des Moines Lodge #104 three years ago when the Dike Lodge disbanded.

Attending District and National Conventions were something she really looked forward to.

Many will remember her wearing her Viking hat or Danish costume at the conventions. She was the Dike delegate at the Denver, CO convention.

She battled several serious health conditions throughout the years, but always said, "Every day I wake up with a heart beat is a good day." She passed away at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota on June 29, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Tivoli Lodge Updates Tivoli Lodge #300 will hold our second lodge elections at our August meeting on the 12th. We look forward to another year of growth and online fellowship. Our new leadership board will be announced in the September DSS News in addition to monthly lodge emails.

Four New Members: Welcome to new members Evelyn Lanka of Salinas, CA, Julie Staples of Coeur d’Alene, ID, Justyn Anne Baxley of Virginia Beach, VA and Lisa Toftemark of Seattle, WA. We look forward to seeing you soon at an online gathering!

July Discussion Topic: We started what we hope will be an ongoing tradition of learning from and about our members. In July we were honored to hear the immigration story of our own Bente Ellis, who currently lives in San Jose, CA. We look forward to hearing from other members in the future, as part of our monthly topics.

Future topics: Our August topic will be the state of our lodge (our bylaws require us to provide such a presentation annually) in addition to the formal lodge election count. Stay tuned for more information on lodge topics and presentations for September and beyond!

Updates from Mt. Hood Lodge #81, Portland, OR Sunrise – Saturday, July 10 – This is IT! Time to put into motion the highly anticipated day of liberation for Portland Oregon's Mt. Hood Lodge #81 of the Danish Sisterhood of America!

That may sound a little over-dramatic, but what with not being able to have our muchloved meetings since March of 2020, to finally feel sufficiently empowered with vaccines, to come together in a back-yard, outdoor setting is truly liberating.

Thanks to modern technology, some of our Sisters have maintained social and business contacts via frequent Zoom meetings throughout the long pandemic isolation period, and their faithfulness has been affirmed with the promise of a return to “life as usual” with the lifting of social restrictions.

We are thrilled with our first “in person”, “face to face”, “honest to goodness” get-together meeting, as 14 members plus one guest gather together at a member's home. The hugs, the snacks and the chatter fill the perfect summer air

with excitement such as this large backyard has not seen in a long time.

Remarkably, one of our Sisters, that most of us have only known by mail throughout her long-time membership, was in attendance with a guest all the way from her home in Phoenix AZ, adding even more to our festive air.

All in all, it was a beautiful kick-off that we wish for all our Sister-lodges to enjoy, as we hopefully put behind us the nightmare of COVID-19.

Updates from Lodge 4 God sommer fra Chicago.

Dagmar Lodge #4 in Chicago is wishing everyone a great summer. We are slowly getting out of the Covid-19 pandemic with people being vaccinated and able to gather safely.

We started out participating in the yearly Norwegian Independence Parade in mid-May together with the Danish Home of Chicago. It was a beautiful day with people lining the streets enjoying to be able to gather again. Afterwards, we had our Virtual meeting with a great presentation about the Danish Royalty and their relation to Prince Phillip and the English Monarchy presented by Jean Jackson and supported by Bente Vinci with her great knowledge of the Danish Royal family.

Later in May, we had the annually Paint Day at the Scandinavian Park in South Elgin, where many of our Sisters are highly involved.

We all love the park, and it is amazing what new paint can do to old buildings. Lunch with Akvavit and Carlsberg is a must. Also, our Sister Karen

capacities.

The openfaced sandwiches – smørrebrød – were a big hit this year and sold out in almost an hour. The bakery booth with pumpernickel bread, Danish kringle, almond tarts, cardamom braid and baked goods from our Sisters could satisfy the sweet tooth. With a little delay due to heavy rain and a tornado warning, everyone was able to enjoy the food and the beautiful garden with their family and friends.

We are all looking forward to be able to get together again on a regular basis.

Ava Slocum

My name is Ava Slocum and I am honored to be receiving one of this year’s Betty Hansen Scholarships. This fall, I’m excited to move to New York and start my first year at Columbia University, where I’ll be majoring in English. I graduated from high school here in Southern California last spring, but ended up taking a gap year in between high school and college due to COVID-19. Over the last few months, I’ve been interning for a college counseling company and tutoring current high schoolers while also using some of the time to get back into creative writing. I’ve appreciated having the chance to spend some more time with my family before leaving for college after such an unusual year. I have been involved with school and community theater throughout high school and I’m hoping to continue to act in college. I’m also planning to work on some community service projects while I’m there.

I would love to study abroad for my junior year of college, possibly in England to study literature there. For the last two years of high school, I have enjoyed being a part of Princess Marie Lodge #68 in Los Angeles, along with my mom Elizabeth Ferry Slocum and aunt Alexandra Berrie. Learning about my family’s background and our Danish history has been a huge blessing. I’m so thankful to the Danish Sisterhood for supporting me as I’ve worked

to achieve my academic goals, and I truly appreciate the gift of this scholarship.

Marilene Martin

Marilene Martin is my name, passed down 2 generations; originating from my Danish great grandmothers - Marie and Lene. I’m the 1st generation in my family to be born American, but grew up hearing and speaking Danish at home. I’ve been lucky enough to spend time in Dk, where I learned and observed how greatly Denmark’s people care for one another. Care, a basic requirement for human nature and development, yet a rare thing between human beings. This stuck with me to this day, in the following way: I’m dedicated to health and wellbeing; two things that cannot exist without care. The best way to act as a representative for these principles are through preventative self-care and daily measure. I’m currently studying radiation sciences, which will translate to medical imaging in the treatment and diagnosis of patients. This is how this Dane says she cares. Through the dedication of my life to care, I see to the betterment of tomorrow; through the improvement of lives every day, care isn’t limited to those directly giving or receiving. It’s passed through a web of people, and in turn it’s passed onto myself. I am class of 2023. In closing, I’m a single mother to 3 children, ages 7, 6, and 3. I’m involved in boy scouts; leading badge earning activities. Proud member of DSS and of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. In my free time, I enjoy the small moments of silence and rest, playing music, and the arts.

Jacob Rasmussen

My name is Jacob Thorlund Rasmussen and I would like to thank The Danish Sisterhood of America for the Betty Hansen National Scholarship. I am sincerely grateful for this scholarship since this is the second time that I have been awarded financial support from the Sisterhood to attend a Big 10 University following my dream career in Animal Science. My Danish heritage comes from both sides of my family. My parents and grandparents have been involved in Danish Sisterhood and Danish Brotherhood throughout the years and our community hosts a huge Danish Festival every August. We just celebrated my grandfather’s 91st birthday – he was born one year after my great-grandparents immigrated to the United States from the island of Bornholm in Denmark. He has introduced me to many family traditions where we continue to celebrate our Danish heritage. For the 2021-22 school year, I will be a Junior attending Michigan State University in pursuit of a four-year Animal Science degree. My emphasis will be in large animals. Go Green! forward to being a student on campus attending classes in-person. The thing that I enjoy most about attending MSU is being able to physically go out to the animal barns and get real hands-on learning for my Animal Science classes. I am on the MSU track team participating in the decathlon, a series of multiple track events where you earn points for completing each event competitively. In addition to my studies, we spend around four hours a day working out and at track practice. I am proud to have received academic honors for my past year while being a scholar athlete. My goal is to graduate after four years of education with a bachelor’s degree. My career plan is to work as a farm manager or as a manager at an agronomic business. Thank you very much for supporting me financially to achieve that goal.

Jamie Fontaine

I am Jamie Fontaine, a current university student at a Christian institution in Oregon.

Academically, I study both computer science and cognitive science. The mind has always been fascinating to me, for both people and machine. This is why I have such a unique academic mix which I hope to use to improve the future of the people of the world. Most of my free time is spent working with my communities. Namely, I help lead an LGBTQ+ group at my school and I work closely with a local Christian LGBTQ+ nonprofit. I am also going to be serving with an AmeriCorps sponsored group in Iowa before return to school in the coming months. When I do return to my education, I will be studying in Europe for a few months where I’ll be given the opportunity to see western European cultures like the UK and of course Denmark. My life goal is to be able to help build a better future for everyone using my understanding of people, diverse cultures, and technology.

Luke Mortensen

My name is Luke Mortensen and I will be a sophomore this fall at Western Michigan University. I am double majoring in Jazz Studies and Computer Science. Both playing my saxophone and playing around with computers are passions of mine. I have been playing the saxophone since I was in fifth grade and have always enjoyed doing so. I started getting into jazz when I joined my high schools jazz band in 10th grade. From then on, I knew jazz was what I wanted to do with my life. On the computers side, I built my own computer back in 8th grade. One reason why I love to used computers and program is because I love problem solving. I love to take things apart and figure out why they work or why they don’t work. Someday I hope to combine these passions together in some way that is both fun and unique.

Colin Phoebe

My name is Colin Phoebe. I am attending the University of Arizona, and will start my Junior year in the Fall. Currently my major is in biology, but I plan on earning a bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics, after which I can see myself working toward a master’s in biostatistics. I chose bioinformatics based on my passion for biology and mathematics. I am also pursuing a minor in Spanish. I have always enjoyed learning the language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. I hope to take some time in my college years to study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country like Spain, or perhaps somewhere in Central America, to more thoroughly immerse myself in the Spanish language. Besides studying abroad, some other things I would like to experience in college are research positions, internships, and clubs. These are opportunities I believe any college student should at least consider. I think that any chance to further enrich one’s college experience, both academically and socially, should be taken.

Elise Covell

Hi, my name is Elise Covell and I am so grateful to receive this scholarship from the Danish Sisterhood! I grew up in North Olmsted, Ohio with my parents and my older brother.

I graduated from Bowling Green State University in 2019 with my Bachelor of Science in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Now I live in Cleveland and am beginning medical school at Ohio University Heritage College of Medicine - Cleveland Campus this fall. In my free time I enjoy running, playing piano, traveling, reading and spending time with friends and family. I love my Danish heritage and enjoy participating in traditions with my family here like the Danish Sisterhood Christmas party! We have also been able to travel to Denmark to visit family and explore the beautiful country. My favorite Danish food is my Mormor’s frikadeller. I am excited to continue my education in medical school and plan to pursue primary care. Thank you for your generosity in this scholarship!

Hannah Master

My name is Hannah Master, I have been awarded the Olga Christensen Scholarship and couldn’t be more grateful. I am a senior at Clovis North High School, graduating this coming June. My Aunt, Martha Smith, introduced me to the Danish Sisterhood as a member of lodge #24 to express our amazing culture. I have been a part of the Danish Sisterhood for 5 years now, attending picnics and zoom meetings.I had a great passion for volleyball and have been playing competitively for the past eight years but unfortunately won’t be continuing in college. I will be attending Fresno City College to study nursing and pursue my dream of being a neonatal nurse.Thank you for the opportunity to pursue my goals in the near to come future.

Tivoli-One Man's Vision (cont. from July 2021 issue)

Right from the beginning there was a charge to enter Tivoli. Originally the ticket cost was one “mark.” (From 1660 to 1800 the Danish unit currency was 1 rigsdaler or speciedaler = 6 marks = 96 skillings.) In 1845 a season pass became available. Three passes were offered, one for a single gentleman, one for a gentleman and a lady and one for a gentleman and two ladies. Today a season pass—these three designations have disappeared— can cost between 350DK and1300DK ($50.00 to $200.00) depending on the level you select. There are options for gardens only, gardens and rides and all inclusive. Information is available on line.

Tivoli draws around 4.5 to 5 million people a year and is the most visited theme park in Scandinavia.

As indicated above, Carstensen’s park was

far more than just amusements and gardens Music has always been a big part of Tivoli. Danish composer Hans Christian Lumbye was the musical director and in-house composer of Tivoli from 1843 - 1872. He is known as “the Strauss of the North” because his music was inspired by the Viennese waltzes, especially those by the Strauss family. Some of his compositions were written specifically for Tivoli, including “Salute to the Ticket Holders of Tivoli” and “A Festive Night at Tivoli.”

It was in 1839 when Lumbye heard a Viennese orchestra play music by Johann Strauss and after that he began to compose almost exclusively in the style of Strauss. Eventually he was so popular in Denmark that Danes referred to Strauss as the “Lumbye of the South.”

of Tivoli for five years. Then he enlisted to fight in the war against Prussia in Schleswig in 1848.

Shortly after returning from the war he learned Tivoli’s advisory board had fired him for breach of contract.

After a confrontation with the board, Carstensen went to the Danish West Indies and joined the army. He married the daughter of a planter on one of the islands and became an assistant manager of his father-inlaw’s property.

From there he travelled to New York City where along with German architect Charles Gildemeister he designed the New York Crystal Palace for

the 1853 Exhibition of Industry of All Nations.

In 1855 he returned to Denmark and once again built a Danish amusement park, this time in Frederiksberg. It was called the Alhambra. It opened in the summer of 1857, but Carstensen died of pneumonia in January of that year and never saw it open. All that is left of this park built to rival Tivoli is a street in Frederiksberg named Alhambravej, but his first project went on to grow and thrive as we all know.

"Tivoli: One Man's Vision" will be continued in the September issue of the DSN.

September: Meet Your District Officers­— Join us to learn a bit about each of your district officers and what their responsibilities are for your district.

November: Christmas Crafts with Solvang members—Members of our planning board from Solvang will introduce and teach a Christmas craft.

February: A Taste of Convention—As we will celebrate our 100th District Convention in 2022, we’ll be sure to have special events and presentations to inspire everyone. At our February virtual presentation, join us to learn why you should attend Convention next year.

The Museum of Danish America

Dear Sisters, We are now in the final stretch of the Danish Sisterhood of America archives project. There are only two months remaining of the two-year project that we embarked on in October 2019. If we look back even further, it has been a nearly 140 year project to preserve this portion of Danish-American history. I have been honored to spend these two years rehousing, cataloguing, scanning and protecting your past as an organization.

As you know, in early 2019 Angela Stanford and I wrote a grant to the State of Iowa’s Historical Resource Development Program to fund this two-year project to catalogue and make available the Danish Sisterhood of America Collection that you donated to us in 2016. We were awarded this grant in April 2019, with the condition that we match the funds the State provided to us. I would like to congratulate you all because in May 2021, through 84 separate donations small and large, you met the $43,000 goal. Each donation has been essential to reaching this milestone and I would like to thank you personally for making this project possible.

I must highlight that due to two incredibly generous donors who gave a combined total of almost $28,000, we reached this goal before the end of the grant term in September. I would also like to recognize that one of the donations was given in memory of three illustrious Sisters whose names I see often during the cataloguing process, Virginia Christensen, Past National Secretary, Nancy Nyholm, Past National Secretary, and Jenny Jensen, Chairman of the History Gathering Committee and first National Historian.

I have really enjoyed sifting through the DSS history and learning new things at every turn.

As of today I have completed cataloguing nearly 40 banker’s boxes of documents and 286 ledgers, creating a total of 1,213 new records in our database. These records represent National, District and approximately 81 Lodges thus far. I saved the most fun stuff for last; I am now cataloguing pictures and albums within the collection.

I am projected to complete the original cataloguing project by the end of September.

However, as some of you may know, the job is never completely finished. There have been additional donations of DSS material that have come in while I have been working on this project and those will have to be catalogued at a later date. There are also inventories that need to be done periodically, possible digitization, as well as the care for DSS objects that are housed in our collections. I mention the cost of continued collections care to let you know that even though we have met the initial twoyear project goal, we will be caring for these collections indefinitely. I urge you to keep this in mind for any future donations you may want to give for the continued care of this very special collection.

Again, I thank you for your generosity and for the opportunity to serve as the caretaker of this important historical collection.

DSS Angel Member Status The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted. A couple of options are available: • A change of beneficiary to: Danish Sisterhood of America or, • A change of beneficiary to one of the national scholarship funds. Be specific, ie: Betty Hansen Scholarship, Past National Officers, Camp Grant, etc.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or the National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change Form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you'd be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category can participate by donating $1,000 to the Danish Sisterhood of America.
