Ever have one of those times where you are just not sure what to say to someone? I’m kind of having one of those moments right now. It’s important that I share some words of importance with you about the health of the Sisterhood, but unfortunately my heart is heavy with the loss of my mother just days ago and as much as I’d like to say I can do this and keep it all business, I’m having a challenge here. So, please forgive this moment of very personal sharing and keeping this short.

The Sisterhood is at a pivotal moment with regard to our history, and we’ve not yet (at the time I’m writing this, not when you read it) come to an agreement on our terms with the Danish American Museum on the transfer of our history and data. I do sincerely hope that by the next publication of The Sisterhood News, we will have something to report.

Until then, please know that this tremendous Board is working away, and we’re here if you need to share questions and concerns.

More to come very soon, and thank you all for your amazing commitments to our Sisterhood.

Velkommen

Dear Sisters, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about places that I love, and I’d like to share a little with all of you. I recently went back to my college’s town of Decorah, Iowa for their annual Nordic Fest celebration. While it is always a little more Norwegian-focused than I’d like, there was plenty of Danish spirit there and Scandinavian comraderie.

Going back for the festival allowed me yet another chance to marvel at the small-town charm, the historic buidlings, the beautiful bluffs of the Driftless Region. It is definitely a place I love.

I also love the places where I’m from–growing up in Racine, Wisconsin and spending many a weekend and summer in Door County, Wisconsin. I’m looking forward to heading back that way later this summer for more family time and a little relaxation. I cannot express the joy I feel each time I am surrounded by the trees, lakes, and so many other things that I have seen a million times or those that are new and surprising.

Then there is the state I live in now, Minnesota.

A newer place to me in the past three years, but a place I am learning to love in it’s own way. From the big cities like St. Paul to the smaller rural towns to the wooded northern areas–all have a place in my heart.

And finally, of course, we have Denmark. I’m sure you’ve heard it from me before and you’re sure to hear it again, but Denmark is always with me. I love picking out an image for the front cover, whether it’s one I have taken or one someone has sent in to be included. For those of you who haven’t been to Denmark, I hope these cover photos and histories give you a little introduction to the place that we come from and celebrate within our organization. I have been to Denmark twice and constantly have this urge to go back. Denmark, and each of these places that I’ve talked about already, have many similarities as well as their own special differences. I think it is important to hold onto, remember, re-visit, and cherish the places we love. So this month, if you have a place that you love, consider sharing it with a friend, family member, or even the Danish Sisterhood News!

On the Cover Title: Windmills in Denmark Region: Near Ry, Denmark on Jutland.

Photographer: Glenda Madrid Denmark has had a rich history with windmills and windpower. The windmill on the cover is located in the countryside outside of Ry, Denmark.

This type of windmill is known as a smock mill as the shape resembles that of an old farmer’s smock. Smock windmills are typically constructed as a sloping tower with six or eight sides. The sides are horizontally weatherboarded or thatched. The top of the windmill has a roof or cap that would rotate.

Today, Denmark continues to use wind energy in the form of wind turbines, which continue to be used to produce a large amount of the energy needed to produce electricity throughout the nation.

Dike Sisterhood Lodge #176, Dike, Iowa Our July meeting was a social get together at the historic farmstead of Lois Stork. She lives just outside of Dike in a modern house, but we had a delicious potluck meal in the century old farmhouse that she has restored to its original glory. After moving it from another location, she added a large wrap around deck that allowed us a scenic view of the area.

It was a wonderful time to step back in history to experience a home that was filled with nostalgia.

Also on her farmstead is a one room schoolhouse, complete with all the former things that were prevalent in Iowa’s early education.

It also houses some Danish textbooks, used by early settlers in the area. Another wonderful building is the chapel that formerly served close to her farm, but was moved and restored to its original beauty. Other farm buildings are serving as places to entertain guests as well as hold many historical items in a museum-like display.

It was a delightful evening and enjoyed by all.

Update from Sunshine Lodge #181, Holiday, Florida

July 7th sisters Janet Proper and Anni Callaghan of Sunshine Lodge #181 of Holiday, Florida met with sister Millie Anderson at a restaurant in Dunedin, Fl. for an afternoon of reminiscing and girl talk. Due to distance and health issues, Millie has missed many meetings.

This was a chance to bring her up to date and to relay greetings from all the sisters of the lodge. Hopes are this will only be the first of many such get-togethers.

Latest News from Amber Lodge #186, Brainerd, MN Amber Lodge #186 has spent much of our spring and early summer meetings planning for the upcoming September Heartland District Convention. Our members are looking forward to hosting this convention in the beautiful Brainerd Lakes area this fall. At our May 21 meeting after a delicious potluck, members participated in working on decorations and crafts for the convention.

I found it interesting that part of this tradition in the late 19th century includes that the witch was being sent back to the Hartz Mountains of Bloksberg, Germany. Since I am a part German with the maiden name of Haase, this is a part of Danish history I will be apt to remember.

Throughout the 2016 year Amber Lodge has three Danish displays at the Brainerd Crow Wing County Museum. Two of these displays will remain the same while one is a rotating display.

That display currently focuses on famous Danes. These displays were highlighted on June 17, 2016 when Amber Lodge #186 hosted a reception Exploring Danish History and Culture at the museum. This was a great opportunity to share with the local community about our Danish Heritage. Museum visitors were able to participate in making Danish woven baskets and star hearts, eating aebleskivers and Spritz cookies, and children could take part in a children’s storytime. It was a fun time for lodge members to work together on this event The local paper ran an informative and positive story on our Lodge called Passing Down Traditions. This article can be found at the Brainerd Dispatch website.

After a full and fun afternoon at the museum several Lodge members went to Nealna Gylling’s home on Gull Lake for a potluck, short meeting, and bonfire. This was the first time that I had attended a Sankt Hans Aften celebration.

M.O.O. District Convention April 22-23, 2016 The Michigan-Ohio-Ontario (M.O.O.) District Convention was hosted by Lodge #65 in Greenville, Michigan on April 22nd and 23rd at the brotherhood hall.

The event was planned by Martha Roy, President; Karene Cooper, Past President: Linda Coles, Secretary; Donna Trebesh; Maureen Dodd; and Nels Hansen, from the brotherhood.

Many of our members also contributed food for our meals or did other things to help.

Our convention “theme� was centered around the daisy, using bright yellow along with the white to add lots of color.

Friday evening featured a social time from 7:00-9:00 and the guests were served appetizers.

Saturday morning started with sunshine and registration at 9:00a.m. Coffee and rolls were served before the meetings started at 9:30.

We were honored to have Karin Wasler here as the representative from our National Board.

About 25 members were present, representing the Sarnia/Port Huron, Marlette, Ludington, Negaunee, and Greenville lodges.

It was special to have the three members from Lodge #1 in Negaunee because of the long distance they had to travel and the information they shared.

Kris Grunwald told the story of her Danish ancesters who settled in Upper Michigan and the tragic story that happened to create a need for the first organized lodge.

Allan Johnson talked about the work he was doing to translate the diary written by Niels Hemmingsen so the story could be shared by all.

(His current article was in the June newsletter.)

The other lodges also gave a report on events since our last convention. Cleveland, Ohio had a report to share even though nobody was able to attend.

General business was discussed and a memorial service was held to honor sisters who had passed away over the last year.

finished, many of our guests took a tour of three older Danish churches in our area, planned by Nels Hansen. At each church a sister or member gave a history of that church. At the final church, they were getting ready to host a hot beef and aebleskiver evening dinner, so our guests were able to sample some of the aebleskivers.

Our dinner was held at 6:30 Saturday evening wth about 55 guests attending. Announcements, remarks and good conversation were made. Then they enjoyed dancing to the music of the Sweet Swing Band before ending their evening.

A last minute decision combined with an up-close visit with my credit card, and I was off for a quick trip to Denmark for a wedding of long time, dear friends who decided to tie the knot.

They reside in a summer house on the island of Fanoe located off the west coast of Denmark, only minutes away from Esbjerg. This is an area of Denmark I was barely familiar with as we would typically go to either Skagen or Djursland for summer vacation growing up.

I flew into Billund from Amsterdam, which is so convenient - a small airport situated in the southern part of Jutland. Sure beats taking the train from Copenhagen while fighting jet lag.

After an hours drive, we arrived in Esbjerg and waited for the ferry. Fanoe is connected to the mainland by ferries sailing only every 20 minutes all year long. The trip to the

island lasts just 12 minutes - barely enough time to get out of the car and up onto the deck. (A tip for anyone wanting to visit Fanoe during summer: Try to avoid leaving on Sunday afternoon unless you are prepared to wait in line for several hours,)

I felt I had stepped onto sacred ground arriving in Nordby, the main town of the island. Â The red brick houses and cobblestone narrow streets - everything was so quaint. I had forgotten how beautiful Denmark can be. It was love at first sight - the fresh air, the scent of the ocean and wide endless beaches captured my heart. An unforgettable sight greeted me as the sky was covered with kites, thousands of them. Every June, Fanoe is the mecca and rendezvous for kite enthusiasts, drawing people from all over Europe.

Fanoe is a also a huge supplier of Amber which can be found on the beach.

One of my highlights was a visit to the small town of Soenderho on the southern part of the island. If any of you readers are familiar with the book “Karen from the

Mill” by Danish born author Anne Ipsen, you will fully capture the atmosphere walking around the town setting you back to the late 1800s. In the old days, Fanoe was the home to a huge maritime fleet and trade, ranking number two after Copenhagen. The local history and museum is a nice tribute to this piece of history. Fanoe has maintained its governmental independence, opposing a bridge being built to the mainland after a referendum a few years back when a lot of the counties in Denmark were consolidated. They are proud “Fanniker” (the official word for a resident of Fanoe). However, being a “stand alone island” does not mean they are isolated nor deprived in any way. Somewhat comparable to the 300 members - we might be our own small enclave in the organization but are not isolated either. Resolution IN MEMORY OF EVELYN BENNETT Evelyn was a member of Danner Lodge #6 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was born in Superior, WI on December 14, 1919 and passed away on November 25, 2015 in Omaha following complications from a fall while feeding her birds in the back yard. Evelyn recommended that those of her generation not climb onto a bench to fill a bird feeder.

Evelyn is survived by a daughter and three sons, 6 grandchildren, and 6 great­grandchildren, many friends and neighbors.

Evelyn was the current treasurer of Lodge #6, attended Lodge meetings, participated in many activities with her family, lived in her home, cared for her cat, flower and vegetable garden and was still driving her car before her injury. She Danish Sisterhood News, August 2016

was also an active member of the Danish American Club and helped with the cooking for many events. She could still get down on her knees to light the oven.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Recipient of the Betty Hansen Scholarship & the Past Presidents’ Scholarship

Kenneth Judge Kenneth Judge is entering his senior year at Aquinas College, Grand Rapids. Over the past three years, he has been studying Theatre in hopes of someday being able to make a difference in the community through different forms of art. He has also been studying Japanese and was recently accepted into Aquinas’ Japanese study abroad program.

During his last semester as an Aquinas student, he will be focusing his studies on language fluency and culture in Japan on the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) campus. Kenneth came across the Danish Sisterhood Scholarships through his mother (Martha Judge) and grandmother (Joyce Houck) who are both members. He is very grateful for the financial aid that the Danish Sisterhood is providing in a time when paying for a college education is so difficult.

Sydney Rilum Sydney Rilum is beginning her junior year at the University of San Diego (USD) where she is a member of the honors program, majoring in marine science and minoring in biology. This past summer she was a mammalogy intern at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA, working with and training seals, sea lions, and sea otters. Sydney is also a member of USD’s Dance Team performing at various sporting events and competing in National Dance Championships. Her favorite styles of dance are jazz, ballet, pop, and hip hop. A native Californian, she was raised in Tustin.

She loves collecting stamps from around the world, as well as coins.

Sydney is very proud of her Danish heritage. Her father was born in København and relocated to California to obtain his doctorate degree. She has visited Denmark ever since she was little, and has spent many summers traveling the country from Skagen to Falster. Sydney often stays with her Farmor in Helsingør, and her cousins who live just outside of København. She loves visiting Tivoli (where her parents got engaged), as well as Bakken, the world’s oldest operating amusement park.

Sydney would like to thank the Danish Sisterhood of America for supporting her in her efforts to achieve her academic goals, and is honored for being awarded with the Betty Hansen National Scholarship for a second year.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Recipients of the Betty Hansen Scholarship (Cont.)

Cate MacGregor My name is Cate MacGregor and I am going to be a junior at the University of San Diego in the fall. I am currently majoring in both Biology and Theology, which makes for an interesting contrast and even better conversation starter. When I’m not studying, you can usually find me at one of two places: at a local coffee shop, sipping an espresso and trying to look sophisticated, or at one of San Diego’s many beaches, frolicking in between the waves. I am, and always have been, an adventurer at heart; this restless spirit of adventure was instilled in me at a very young age by my grandmother. Our greatest adventure together was the trip we took to Denmark a few years ago, where I got to eat real æbleskivers and meet dozens of people I didn’t even know I was related to. My grandmother taught me many things during our travels, but most importantly, she always taught me to appreciate and treasure my Danish roots. And if it weren’t for my Danish roots, I would have never known about the Danish Sisterhood, or its generous scholarships, which brings me to the point of this short little autobiography – to express my gratitude. I cannot fully express how truly grateful I am that the Sisterhood decided to award me with a scholarship this year, so I will just say how excited I am that scholarships like this one will allow me to continue to attend the school of my dreams and study what I love most.

Mandy Kirkland I was born April 1, 1985 in Walnut Creek, California. We lived in a small home in Tracy, California until I was 4 when my mother passed away in 1989. Afterwards my father took my brother and me to live with his mother. Living with my grandmother is where I gained my passion for religion, country, food, and education. When I was in High School I became very interested in the study of Psychology. By my senior year I was able to take my first Psychology class. After High school I wanted to stay close to family so I attended a local community college. I paid for school by working at a local pizza restaurant. Two years after my grandmothers passing in 2005 I moved across the state to San Diego, California. I left after four years and persued a relationship with my now husband.

Around the same time is when I became more invested in learning about my Danish roots. A few years later I joined Lodge #126 and have loved every minute of my time so far with all our lovely sisters. After I got married in 2014 I decided to return back to school to work on my first love of Psychology. After much research I choose to continue my educational adventures with the University of Phoenix. I will be receiving my BA in Psychology where I will pursue teaching or clinical work. I hope to create some positivity in the world.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Recipients of the Betty Hansen Scholarship (Cont.)

Emily-Claire Ross

As a current senior at the University of Denver, I am honored to have received the Betty Hanson National Scholarship. As a student of triple citizenship between Denmark, Great Britain, and the United States, I aim to have this scholarship aid me in my hopes of working on the international level either in public relations, or working with human rights organizations in the fight against atrocities such as human trafficking. In the past I have worked with local high school Bear Creek High as well as with the local government of Nagasaki, Japan where fellow students, a local artist and I sold “Heal Japan” t-shirts in order to raise funds for the 2011 tsunami crisis. I have also begun to work with the multinational organization Liberty in North Korea, where we hope to establish a fundraising club in order to aid North Korean refugees. This scholarship will be of great aid to me as I pursue my language studies consisting of Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese and Danish, as well as helping me complete my International Studies degree. I will work hard to make the Danish Sisterhood as well as my family in Denmark proud as I embark on my final year of undergraduate studies, and will graduate with a strong sense of connection with my Danish culture and a strengthened conviction in the good my generation and I can bring to the further globalizing world.

Melissa Sallee

My name is Melissa Sallee. Thank you for the Betty Hansen scholarship which you so generously decided to give me. I have been living in Oregon for about 15 years now and always knew that I wanted to go to the University of Oregon. When going to the University of Oregon I will be aiming towards a business major and Japanese minor. My mother is from Danmark and encouraged me to be part of the Danish Sisterhood as well, I have now been a member for about 10 years. For the last 8 years I have gone to Himmelbjerget Danish camp, and met many new friends.

Some of my hobbies include snowboarding, soccer, swimming (leisure), Japanese, drawing, and camping.

I have been studying Japanese for about 6 years and wish to become a translator. I first heard Japanese when I watched Japanese cartoons and immediately fell in love with the language and the sound of it. From then on I have been studying not only the language, but the culture and traditions of Japan as well. It is my biggest passion.

I had a job at the Aloha Swim Center as a lifeguard and water instructor. I worked there for a year and a half before I decided that it was too much of a workload on top of school, so I resigned to focus on studying. I still have the certification for CPR, AED, and first aid assistance and I plan on working at the swim center on the UO campus. I am looking forward to every opportunity that UO has for me, and I am so grateful for this scholarship.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Recipient of the Olga Christensen Scholarship

Alexandra Bartlett

My name is Alexandra Bartlett and I have been a part of the Danish Sisterhood for as long as I can remember. Recently, I completed my first year at Nazareth College. I am a nursing major and my long-term goal is to obtain my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. I have really enjoyed being at Nazareth College and I am confident it is a great fit and will allow me to accomplish my goal. I am very excited to see where the next few years take me!

James Keathley

My name is James Keathley. I am honored to receive the Elizabeth Garde National Scholarship. Your generous financial support will assist me in my pursuit of an advanced degree in order to further my career and support my family. From 2004 to 2014 I was a high school history teacher and baseball coach. Much of my inspiration to work in schools is embedded within my families’ rich history of public service; dating back to my Danish great-great-grandfather Peter Sørensen Vig, who was a church leader, educator, and author.

During my tenure as a teacher I knew I eventually wanted to further my career and become a speech-language pathologist (SLP).

SLP’s work with children and adults who have speech, language, and swallowing disorders. As a young boy I had developed a fluency disorder, resulting in a severe stutter; that still persists today to varying degrees.

Last year my wife and I welcomed our first child, a healthy baby boy named Connor. We decided the time was finally right for me to further my career. I enrolled full time at Elmhurst College to take the prerequisite classes needed in order to apply to speech-language pathology graduate programs.

During my time there I accumulated a 3.81 GPA and served as an executive board member for NSSLHA, the Elmhurst College organization for SLP students. In the fall, thanks to your financial support, I will return to Elmhurst College to start their graduate program in order to receive my master’s degree in speech-language pathology.

Thomas Wilcoxon

My name is Thomas Wilcoxon and I have recently graduated from York Community High School in Elmhurst, Illinois. In the fall of 2016, I will be attending Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin to study environmental science.

For most of my life, I have been interested in environmental issues.

Attending Northland College will give me a focused, in-depth education in this designated field of study.

The Mildred Sorensen Scholarship will help me continue my education, and I am very grateful for the help that the Supreme Lodge of the Danish Sisterhood of America has provided me. In my free time, I can often be found volunteering for local organizations such as the Elmhurst Park District, or Public Action to Deliver Shelter.

With Denmark being one of the leaders in environmental research, I plan on visiting during a semester abroad in college. My Danish heritage is very important to me and I enjoy learning about my family background and our Danish history!
