Your Board was able to meet in person for our Spring Board meeting in Los Angeles. We did have some challenges as 1st Trustee, Linda Holtz, was unable to attend in person due to her plane being cancelled, so she joined us via Zoom which certainly is not the same as being there in person, as all of you can attest to. The rest of the Board was happy to finally be together and ignite each other’s energy and excitement.

At our meeting several subjects were discussed, among them our 2023 National Convention which as you know is being held in Minnesota October 5th – 8th 2023. We started the enormous work of running a convention both as a host lodge and as the National Board awhile back, and now we are at the point where we will be reaching out to lodges for help. Please be willing to step up, if asked to help with a task.

Many of you have held National Conventions and knows how much time, effort and manpower this takes, and your Board is seven people, many, who like you, have jobs, families and other responsibilities, so we will need your help.

We also discussed in detail the delegate requirement of having to attend five(5) meetings/events prior to delegate selection. This may prove very difficult for some lodges as Covid restrictions have differed from state to state and country to country, so we decided that we would waive this requirement for the 2023 National Convention. This way lodges can select the person they feel represents them and their views, regardless of the delegates issues with attending meetings and events during Covid-19.

As you know our trip to Denmark was cancelled in 2020 and this year, we are finally able to complete it. With us not going in 2020

Dear Sisters, I hope you are all having a lovely spring.

For each issue of the DSN this year, we are featuring vintage covers of the Danish Sisterhood news.

As I was choosing the cover for this issue, I saw this one and thought it would be a perfect cover for our April issue. I especially loved the flowers and font choices used to celebrate Easter.

As things are warming up and also seem to be opening up more, I've been able to spend a lot more time outdoors and getting ready for the gardening season. I love growing fruits, vegetables, herbs and more and can't wait to start my garden in our new backyard.

I also an excited to see lodges growing and doing more activities again. As always, please continue to send us updates and news from your lodges. We're also looking for more historical articles, fun facts, photos and stories related to Denmark or being Danish.

I hope you are all staying healthy and enjoying the springtime as much as I am.

Officer's Corner: Linda Holz, First Trustee Hello from Iowa! Today as I prepare this article, there are 3 inches of snow on the ground and I am grounded from attending our National Spring Board Meeting. My flight got cancelled twice and we decided that I would miss too much of the meeting, so I am attending it via Zoom.

My duties as First Trustee include purchasing the merchandise for Butikken and filling the orders that you as members place.

We are looking into ways to simplify the payment process. More on that later! Over the past few months, we have added several new items: the red aprons, the flag oven mitt/pot holder sets, the flag coasters, and the puffy blue vests. We will continue to look for other items that might be of interest to you.

I was first introduced to the Danish Sisterhood when I married a Dane who had emigrated from Lokken, Denmark when he we had several members from the original trip who wanted to sign up for the 2022 trip. We also had many sisterhood members who were interested in going, and our trip was fully booked before the end of 2021. With such an overwhelming response we were able to put together another Denmark trip in September with the exact same itinerary. There are some spots available, but with us announcing this with several other organizations, if you are even thinking about going sign up now.

As you know our Archival Project fundraiser was a major success and we are finalizing the Thank-You banner. It is good to see so many lodges and individuals mentioned, and we are very proud and thankful that you were able to contribute.

As some District conventions are being postponed again this year, we have reached out to Tivoli Lodge to see if we could possibly show

was eight years old. I started driving my mother-in-law to the Sisterhood meetings of Des Moines Lodge #102. Since I was already there, I decided to join the lodge (back in 1965). I have held several offices in the lodge including president for many years. I was also the secretary, vice-president and president of what is now known as the Heartland District.

I was elected to the National Board in 2015 at the Denver convention and have been “butikken trustee” ever since.

I have two sons and two stepdaughters. I enjoy being on the board and meeting members from all of the districts. Please check out Butikken in the newsletter and on the website and I will be very happy to fill an order for items that you would like.

our District slides at one of their meetings, inviting all the Sisterhood Lodges to join us. This way all the lodges will have the possibility of seeing what news we bring to them and what our plans are going forward. We are very excited about this prospect and you will hear more when things have been finalized.

Lastly as our Board meeting was in Los Angeles, we were able to meet with members of Prinsesse Marie Lodge #68 and Tivoli Lodge #300 for lunch at Open Face Food Shop. It was great to meet with representatives from both lodges, and we had a great time bonding, making new friends and tasting some delicious food.

Resolution: Marie Johnson, Lodge #90, Lincoln, Nebraska Marie Johnson was born on August 30,1922 to Boy Hinrich and Anne Kirstine (Kragh) Jessen at the family’s farmhouse in Froslev, Denmark. Marie peacefully passed away on January 23, 2022 at the age of 99. She always delighted in sharing her family history and many stories with her Danish Sisters. At the young age of almost four she remembered the ship that transported Marie and family emigrating from Denmark to Nebraska. Marie was one of 12 siblings, each one kept in touch, and attended many family reunions. She is survived by two brothers and three sisters.

On May 8, 1948 she married Quentin Johnson. Born to their marriage, were two sons and three daughters, Eric (Connie), Wes Johnson, Anne (Rick) Rivers, Jean (Jessie) Carroll, and Ellen (Gary) Vorderstrasse. She is survived by 11 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

Marie joined our Lodge in 1980, the same year that my mother Merle (Pedersen) Tomlinson and I joined as new members. Marie and Merle became fast friends discussing not only their Danish heritage, but their interest in flower

gardening and their love for growing roses. Both were active Rose Society members, many times they exchanged tips on growing prize winning roses. When Quentin and Marie lived on a farm in Ceresco, NE, she had her own business called “Johnson’s Greenhouse.” She had a talent for making arrangements and preparing wedding flowers. Occasionally, Marie would bring a beautiful bouquet to our meetings.

Over the years, she served in various offices in our Lodge, also as a Danish Sisterhood District officer. She was thorough, accurate, and always organized. I attributed those abilities to her work in public schools, the University of Nebraska, an Air Base in Grand Island, State of Nebraska, her Lutheran Church and the National Park Service. Marie was soft spoken, loyal to her Danish ancestry, forever enjoying her much loved family and friends. Notably, her conversations were always positive, she lived by the saying “if you can’t say something nice…"

Our kind and gentle Danish Sister Marie will always be remembered. We celebrate her long life, and mourn her passing.

Resolution: Edith Bertha (Jorgensen) Montgomery Edith Bertha (Jorgensen) Scott Montgomery, 87, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died 1 November 2021. She was widely known as “Edy" to those who knew her. Born on 27 January 1934, in Hooper, Dodge county, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Danish immigrants Niels Vørre (1900-1997) and Ingrid Henriette (Andersen) (1908-1998) Jorgensen of North Bend, Nebraska. She was proud of her heritage and was a member of Danish Sisterhood of America Lodge #90.

She was married to Paul Richard Scott in 1952 in Dodge county, Nebraska. They moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where they raised their family She will be remembered as a wonderful stay-athome mother who cooked meals, sewed clothes, and planned birthday parties for her children.

When she became a grandmother, she enjoyed baking birthday cakes for and sharing her love of reading with her granddaughter.

During her second marriage, Edy ran the Joyo Theatre. She loved meeting theatre patrons and sharing movies and plays with the community. Throughout her life, Edy enjoyed cooking, sewing, puzzles, singing and movies. She was involved in numerous community and social organizations.

Edith Bertha is survived by three children, Julia Kay Scott, Michael Scott, and Randy Scott; two sisters, Lillian Marie Foresman of Dodge, Nebraska and Sonja Mae Waite of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Edith Bertha was preceded in death by both husbands and two siblings, Inez Pauline (Jorgensen) Benjes and Stanley Warren Jorgensen both of Fremont, Nebraska.

Lodge #15 and the Wonderful March Program, Milwaukee, WI When Marcia Jante, our Lodge Program Chairman, introduced Laura Simms to present the program at our March meeting, we had no idea what an incredibly wonderful hour we were about to spend with this fascinating woman.

Among her many skills and accomplishments recognized by Marcia in the introduction, she is also the Artistic Director of the Hans Christian Andersen Story Telling Program in New York City and also one of the many storytellers.

Thanks to an initial contact with Laura made by our member Susanne Hohlen, Marcia was able to contact Ms. Simms and make arrangements for her to present a zoom program for us.

The story of this program begins in the 1930s with the Danish American Women’s Association (DAWA) who wanted an annual radio broadcast in celebration of the birthday of HC Andersen. It would be aimed at school children and feature information on his life and songs and would include the reading for his fairy tales.

This radio program continued from 1936 through the war years and beyond. In 1952 when the time of Andersen’s 150th birthday was approaching, the DAWA formed a committee to investigate the possibility of putting a statue of the writer in Central Park. It was a task that would take a while and a lot of money. A sculptor, Georg John Lober, was found and by 1953 the first model was revealed. They eventually convinced the Art Commission of New York and the Parks Commission to agree to the project.

Initially an idea was launched to ask Danish school children to make contributions, making the statue a gift from Danish to American school children. By 1955 $15,000 had been raised, but more was needed. Laura said it was then Baroness Dahlerup, a Danish baroness living in NYC, a member of the DAWA, and one of the people who worked for the production of the radio program, suggested also raising some money from school children in the five boroughs of NYC. Amounts between 1 cent and no more than 5 cents were collected, and a year later they had raised an additional $12,000.

The bronze statue depicts the author seated with his top hat removed and reading his story of The Ugly Duckling to a little duckling sitting at his feet. Children are often drawn to climb up the sculpture and sit in Andersen’s lap.

It is located on the west side of the Conservatory Pond (the small duck & sail-boat pond just north of the East 72nd Street entrance to Central Park).

In 1980 when Laura was working with a group of children of New York City actors and actresses, she wanted them to put on a performance in the park. It was the middle of April and chairs were set up for the parents to watch the presentation. In addition to the parents the crowd was made up of typical New Yorkers who were passing by and stopped to watch. When it was over, they all wanted to see it again. To fill the time between performances, Laura decided to tell a fairy tale. When the second performance was over, a lady walked up to Laura to thank her.

She told Laura that as a little girl in Odense Denmark, she had sat on the knee of Hans Christian Andersen. She said Laura was a true storyteller. That woman was Baroness Alma Dahlerup.

This encounter began Laura’s relationship with Hans Christian Andersen, the statue, the Hans Christian Andersen Storytelling Center and with storytelling.

Since 1956, on Saturdays during the summer from June through September the children of New York have gathered at the statue to hear various storytellers tell fairytales and folk stories and other stories from all over the world. Laura said as the stories are told, children move closer and closer to the statue and the storyteller. Busy New York parents stand around, many reading their newspapers, but as the story progresses, papers are lowered, teenage skateboarders stop and many people walking by pause to listen.

There is a magic in storytelling.

Laura is not Danish, but she did have some associations with HC Andersen She had, of course, heard and read some of the stories.

But in addition, her mother, a concert pianist owned the only grand piano in their neighborhood and Danny Kaye, who would later play the 7

role of Hans Christian Andersen in the Samuel Goldwyn movie of the same name, came to their home to practice on the grand piano.

In 2020 the program of storytellers was in place for another wonderful summer when Covid 19 arrived. There would be no storytelling in the park. It was decided to move the event online.

Laura said she was not sure what it would be like; if it would even work. As it turned out all of New York City’s best storytellers wanted to participate. Eventually storytellers from all over the world and the United States were now able to be included. Laura said it brought the world together. Laura asked that they tell a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, not read one. By not reading the story, the storytellers had to look closely at what Andersen had written. Many had to work in translation. They had to ask themselves why one would tell the story today. As they told, not read, the stories, the stories came alive.

People who had grown up with these stories realized how profoundly the stories dealt with social and emotional issues of current day.

On the average day of reading in the park there could be 40 to 50 people listening. When they took the project online, they sometimes had as many as 2000 people listening. There are now over 100 stories available online. Ms. Simms then told us a story of the disappearing duckling. In 1973 someone stole the little duckling which was cemented into the HC Andersen statue base. It just disappeared over night. The New York Times and the Daily News interviewed the people at the Story Center about the statue and the little duckling. A woman who lived across the street from the statue read the stories and offered to pay for a new duckling.

But Laura said that very afternoon a person who read about the missing duckling was walking past an antique store, and there it was. The duckling was brought back in a car with a police escort. They drove down 5th Avenue and the ducking was returned to its place in the park.

During the hour we heard much about the Story Center and the stories of HC Andersen. To end her presentation Ms. Simms told us a story about the fairytale The Little Match Girl. Laura had seen a very sad film of the story. But when an orchestra in NYC decided to put on a musical presentation and puppet show of the life of HC Andersen and his stories, she was invited to tell about Andersen’s inspiration for one of his stories. She wanted a shorter story and researched the little Match Girl. As she read and reread the story she began to see it differently.

Andersen had been commissioned in 1885 to write the story based on a calendar etching of a poor little girl with matches in her hand.

Laura was going to be giving this presentation at a time when there were so many refugees longing for their homes and living in difficult situations—not much different than the times we are living in today. Suddenly the little match girl became very real to her. She had worked in Haiti after the earthquake and had seen so many little match girls.

“Anderson had faith in people to imagine beyond their situations’” said Laura. (Just as the little match girl does in the story. And so she dies with a smile on her face.) “Anderson understood something of the power of literature to change people’s lives and to replenish themselves,” she added The Hans Christian Andersen stories have lasted so long because they deal with the human condition, human emotions and our relationship to nature.

She ended her presentation by asking lodge members to share some of their experiences with the stories of Hans Christian Andersen.

Heartland District Convention Report The Heartland District Sisterhood held its first convention in over two and a half years on April 1st and 2nd. Meeting at a Des Moines, Iowa Holiday Inn, Lodge 186 from Brainerd, Minnesota and Lodge 3 from Davenport, Iowa joined with Lodge 102 from Des Moines, Iowa for a wonderful time of reconnecting and Hygge.

Friday night's traditional frikadeller and fixings dinner was delicious! Entertainment of Danish folk dancing and singing was enjoyed by all.

Saturday morning meetings held the election of the new officers, other business matters, and the memorial service for dear members who had passed since the last convention. Our special guest, National Secretary Glenda Madrid, was introduced and welcomed. We were also pleased to recognize two other members of the National Board who were in attendance as members of our district: Linda Holz (National Trustee and Butikken Chairman); and Nealna Gylling (National Trustee and Scholarship Chairman).

Our Saturday evening banquet was once again decorated beautifully in a Danish theme.

It was the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, and appropriately, each table held 2 beautiful commorative plates showing scenes from his

fairy tales, as well as one of his famous quotations. The meal of Danish pork roast with prunes and apples along with many extras, was delightful. Lisa Kramme, a very talented storyteller, shared several of his fairy tales, even paper cutting, as she talked. What a special way to complete our salute to one of Denmark's most famous authors!

A standing ovation was given to our Heartland District President Carol Rudisill when she received the award for "Outstanding District Sister." Carol led us through "unprecedented" territory for over 2 years as we dealt with the loss of our dear long time Secretary/Treasurer Jane Paulsen early in 2020, then the pandemic that started 2 months later. She found ways to keep us afloat and organize our group effectively to be able to hold the long delayed convention.

Carol has been very active in her own lodge 102 and the convention's theme "Keeping the Danish Spirit Alive" was really a reflection of her personal philosophy as well. One of her favorite sayings when she has been thanked for "going the extra mile" in helping others is "That's what Sisters are for!"

It was a memorable convention to all in attendance.

Resolution: Betty Mollerskov I am here today to talk about Betty and the Danish Sisterhood lodge.

Betty joined the lodge as a young girl in her teens (like many of us did) and was active in the activities and meetings. She dropped out of the lodge when Alan was a toddler to take care of him. The Brotherhood and the Sisterhood met at the same time and John, her husband, was active in the Brotherhood. Betty rejoined the Sisterhood in 1960. She continued to be very active in the Lodge. She held all of the offices at one time or the other. She also served on the committees for planning Midwest District Conventions and also was the Co-chair with Lillian Andersen for the National Convention in the mid 1960’s that was held in Milwaukee. She held offices in the Midwest District and also was a delegate to National conventions twice.

Betty worked on and participated in the many card parties and Aebleskiver breakfasts When Lodge 5 in Racine dissolved, she transferred to Lodge 20 in Kenosha. Betty had the task of gathering the records, etc. of Lodge 5 and transferring them to the National Office. She continued to be active in Lodge 20 in Kenosha for several years.

In September 2015, Betty received the Danish Sisterhood Lifetime Achievement award.

She is the first National member to receive this.

It was presented at our annual picnic gathering with her son, Alan attending this happy moment.

Being a part of the Danish Sisterhood was one of Betty’s greatest joys and she will be missed. She was a True Treasure to our Sisterhood Lodges

Dagmar Lodge #4, Chicago, IL Updates We are now slowly going back to normal after the Covid and starting doing in-person meetings.

On February 2/27/22 we are teamed up with DAAC – Danish American Athletic Club, who is doing a fantastic Fastelavn with the Danish Barrel and costumes party ofr kids and adults.

We will have a short Sisterhood business meeting before the event.

Our lodge are providing home baked fastelavnsboller to the coffee which were made in the home of Bente Rasmussen. We have a great group of Sisters, where we make about 140 in a couple of hours.

We had reserved the Svidhiod Hall for our yearly Winter Luncheon and Fundraiser on March 5, 2022. We decided to still have the Frikadeller Dinner pick-up due to the uncertainty about Covid when we had to make the decision in January.

We started the food preparation in the

morning and were ready when the pick-up began at 3pm.

The weather was sunny and summerlike in the 60-70F, so we were able to have the raffle table outside in the parking lot and bring out the orders ready to go.

We had a very nice fundraising, and everybody enjoyed to be out able to pick-up their dinners. Now we hope that we can be in-person next year.

Also, at our regular March meeting, we were able to get back at the Danish Home, Hanne Rex Michelsen made a presentation on her delicious Gravlaks (graved laks) that are really popular here in our lodge.

The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted. A couple of options are available:

Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you'd be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category can participate by donating $1,000 to the Danish Sisterhood of America.
