Christina Sallee, National President As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is mowing through the United States, Canada, Denmark and the rest of the world, no place seems to be untouched by this terrible virus, and our first priority is the welfare of you and your loved ones.

As a large part of our Sisters fall into one of the high-risk categories, as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), please continue to follow the guidelines for social distancing instructions, and do your part to flatten the curve of COVID-19 spread.

Social distancing does not mean social isolation.

I would like for everyone to check in with other Sisters, as many of us have also cancelled monthly meetings, we have not had that connection in a month or two.

If you need help, reach out to any of the Sisters. I realize that some of you may not be comfortable with using the internet or social media, but a lot of us are, so give someone a call, and we will do all in our power to help.

When COVID-19 started to gain momentum, we asked you to cancel upcoming District Conventions, and I am happy to report that all five districts came to the same conclusion, and the conventions have been cancelled. We are still hoping to have our two fall conventions, but only time will tell.

This unprecedented situation has no manual or guidebook; we are all in it together, and we remain committed to supporting you however we can during this difficult time.

On a much happier note, April 16th is Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s birthday. Her majesty is turning 80 this year, and she has been the ruler of Denmark for the past 48 years. Initially there were talks about a monthlong celebration, but due to COVID-19 those plans have changed.

What has not changed is that Danes all over the world feel it is very important that we celebrate Her Majesty as only Danes can. A Facebook group (called “Denmark sings for the Queen”) has taken the initiative that on April 16th at noon, we all open our windows and sing the birthday song for her, with the hope that Her Majesty will hear it. This is a fun activity that we all can participate in, and singing always lift the spirit, so join us, and sing for Queen Margrethe on her birthday.

Dear Sisters, In uncertain times, it’s easy to see all of the bad things in our lives. But we all must remember to see that good things too. And when we see the good things, everything gets just a little bit easier.

This edition of the Danish Sisterhood News is focusing on some good things! We are celebrating the 80th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. We have some special features about her and her life in this edition as well as a feature on Danish birthday traditions. We hope you enjoy them.

In other news, we are adding some features to the DSN! For your reading pleasure, we’re seeking submissions for the following: • Are you a fluent Danish speaker? Send us a list of Danish words/phrases and their meanings! The more creative, the better!

Tour Cancelled Out of Caution Dear Friends, As we all know the novel coronavirus(COVID-19) is just starting to ramp up, and we do not know what the future will bring or how long social distancing will be required.

Out of an abundance of caution, and at the urgings of our tour provider, Benedikte, I am sad to announce that we will be cancelling the Denmark Tour 2020.

Full Refunds are being sent to travelers by DSS Treasurer, Linda Brooks.

We are hoping to offer the same trip around the same time in 2021 and are diligently working to plan. As you can imagine, it is difficult to get pricing and reservation information at this time.

Please keep an eye out in the newsletter and online for our announcement of the new trip. Priority will be made for those registered for the 2020 trip. We hope that you will be able to join us in 2021!

Resolution Delores “Dee” Battles, 94, of Grand Island passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019, at Tiffany Square Care Center.

A celebration to honor her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, with visitation the hour prior at All Faiths Funeral Home. Dan Naranjo will officiate.

Dee was born on Feb. 11, 1925, at Anoka, the daughter of Cecil and Otina (Jensen) Thibault.

Following Dee’s graduation from Dannebrog High School, she earned her secretarial certificate from Grand Island Business College.

On April 24, 1954, she was united in marriage to Delbert Battles. The couple made their home in Grand Island, where they raised their five children.

Dee was a caring homemaker and loving mother. She was also a skilled baker and cake decorator, creating many beautiful cakes for weddings and birthdays. While the children were growing up, she was active as a Boy Scout den mother and as a Girl Scout leader for many years.

Church, including being a Sunday School teacher and a member of Ladies Aid. Dee was also active in Danish Sisterhood and a member of Liederkranz.

She is survived by her children, Duane (Dauhrice) Battles of Pensacola, Fla., Dianna (Rick) Audet of Franklin, N.H., David (Martha) Battles of Lincoln, Doug (Lynn) Battles of Friedrichshafen, Germany, and Danita (John) Alderton of Pueblo, Colo.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; along with extended family and friends.

Dee was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert; brother, Lester Thibault; and her parents.

Memorials are suggested to Alliance of Therapy Dogs or Alzheimers Association.

Update from Lodge #102 Des Moines, IA

Update from Lodge #3

We had sad news in January. One of our long time members, Jane Paulsen, at the age of 68, passed away unexpectedly due to complications from general surgery. Jane was secretary of our lodge for many years as well as secretary/treasurer of our Heartland BH/SH District. She had just received our district’s SH Great Dane award.

Jane will be remembered for her attendance at our district and national SH conventions. We did not have a general meeting in January.

We had quite a lot of business to take care of in February. Our officers were selected as follows: President, Christina Hudson; Vice President, Carol Rudisill; Secretary, Jenny Clark; Treasurer, Sue Fisher; 1st Trustee, Sue Stotts; 2nd Trustee, Deb Beery; and 3rd Trustee, Judy Walsh. The Sisters offered to plan and host the Heartland District Convention, September 18 and 19th. A planning committee was formed.

Our Spring brunch will probably be held the first weekend in May. We shared memories from our National SH convention. Carol Rudisill showed us the SH video from the convention.

We did not have a meeting in March due to the coronavirus. We are all well and are hoping everyone wherever they are continue with good health.

Lodge #3 January’s meeting was at the Clinton County Historical museum where 9 of us enjoyed hearing Erika Hansen talk about the Danish School system. Friends from Denmark had sent her current additional information that she shared with us and we always learn much from Erika about her Danish schooling and her knowledge of Denmark.

For the most part, we’ve had a mild winter but we cancelled our February meeting due to a winter storm. In March, 8 of us met at Prairie Grille in Davenport, Iowa. Paulette Fisher gave a talk on Danish castles, including 4 castles that will be included in the 2020 DSS tour, the Hvedholm, Frederiksborg, Gottorp and Grasten castles. What a treat it will be for anyone going on the 12 day tour to visit these beautiful historical castles and gardens.

Lodge #3 members were deeply saddened by the sudden death of Jane Paulsen, our Heartland District Secretary/Treasurer. We will dearly miss Jane and treasure the opportunities we have had over the years to know Jane and to appreciate all she did for the Danish Sisterhood.

We have cancelled our April meeting due to the COVID-19 virus recommendation, and sincerely hope, by the time you are reading this, things have greatly improved and that all of you are safe and healthy and well.

Resolution

Danish Christmas customs were shared at the November meeting. We did not meet in December.

January saw us celebrating Bill and Cheryl’s 48th wedding anniversary with kransekage.

We had a good conversation time at the February meeting. There will be no more meetings until further notice. We wish improved health for Marilyn, Birthe and Cheryl. We hope that each and every Sisterhood member stays health.

The Lodge #173 Charter was draped in memory of Phyllis Pedersen Petersen.

She was born in Penn Yan, NY on July 11, 1933.

She did not attend many meetings, peferring to spend time with her family.

Recently, she and her husband moved to Florida to be closer to their children.

It’s not just a birthday.

Celebrating a birthday in Denmark.

Sing the Danish Birthday song Danes have a few birthday songs to choose from, but the one I’ve heard most often is this one:

Tillykke med fødselsdagen! (Congratulations on your birthday, or Happy Birthday!)

When a birthday rolls around in Denmark, it’s much more than just a day with cake and gifts.

Let’s talk a little about how you can celebrate a birthday the Danish way at your next Danish Sisterhood event or in your home.

Red and White For starters, you need a Dannebrog! A birthday is not a celebration without the inclusion of our beautiful Danish flag. You’ll see it on the breakfast table (the accompanying photo is the one I received from my Danish cousin, Rikke, on a recent visit) and your colleagues may place it on your desk at work. Watch out if you have a party in the park! If you’re invited to a party in the park but aren’t sure where to go, look for the small Dannebrog in the ground to guide your way. Some non-Danes interpret the prevalence of Dannebrog as nationalism. No, not at all. In this context it just means a celebration.

Cake, Cake, Cake For many Americans, the birthday cake is all about the frosting. But not in Denmark, where it’s more about the layers. Light, fluffy cake layered with custard and berry jam and frosted with whipped cream, a Danish lagkage can have five or six layers. We’re sharing with you a recipe from one of our Danish Sisterhood cookbooks, so check it out. This one has a wonderful recipe for custard to include in your layers, so be sure to increase the amount of custard you make in the event you’d like to have more than two layers.

In addition to a traditional Danish layer cake, birthdays in Denmark include a Kagemand, or literally cake man or cake woman. Baked to look similar to a very large gingerbread man, this sweet, yeasted cake is decorated with frosting, chocolate, licorice and sweets for the kids in the family.

After singing of the obligatory birthday song, the cake will be cut. If you are lucky enough to have a Kagemand, the birthday-haver may raise a knife (with the help of an adult, of course) to the neck of the cake and cut off the head to the screams of onlookers (in online resources I saw it called a ceremonious beheading!).

I imagine there are more traditional Danish birthday traditions and I’d love to hear them. Feel free to post to our Danish Sisterhood Facebook page reports of how you celebrate a birthday the Danish way. Not active on Facebook?

RECIPE CARD

Danish Cake (Dansk kage)

Cake Batter Ingredients 1 c. margarine 1 ½ c. Sugar 5 eggs ½ tsp baking powder 2 c. Flour ½ tsp vanilla

Custard Filling Ingredients ½ c. Sugar 2 Tbsp cornstarch 2 eggs 1 c. Scalded milk ½ tsp vanilla

For the cake batter: Mix margarine and sugar together. Add eggs, one at a time. Mix baking powder with flour and add to mixture. Add vanilla. Bake in 3 round, greased pans in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes.

HAABETS FREMTID LODGE 78 • TROY, NEW YORK

As I am sitting in my living room this afternoon, I have a lovely view of falling snow that is just beautiful. The snow on the trees makes for a winter wonderland. We already have about 3 inches on the ground and they say it will be ending tonight. Then warmer weather will melt it all away. Just like everyone else, the Corona Virus has effected all of us Danes in the Troy area.

We were very fortunate to have a meeting on March 14, just before our area was told to shut down and not associate with other people. We were 9 in attendance including Janet and Tim Proper from F.lorida. Janet is President of the Eastern General Committee. She brought a few words of the Lodges on the Eastern Coast and concern for the upcomming Convention.

We do have sad news to share that Betty Jean Proper has passed away. She was 94 years old and a member of our Lodge for 40 years. She held many local offices and enjoyed helping locally and representing us at several conventions, both at home and National. She leaves behind 3 Sons, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She had enjoyed a trip to Florida over the Christmas holidays where she met the newest baby, and had a wonderful time with all their family residing there. She very rarely missed a meeting unless she

was away or not feeling well. She will be missed by the Troy Lodge.

This was the first month of the new year that our new officers presided over. Marilyn Dore was elected President, Mildred Shea Vice Preesident, Judy Jensen Secretary and Marjorie Wheeler as Treasurer.

At the time of our meeting we were making plans for the EGC Convention in Florida this May. I was to represent our Lodge and was excited to be attending.

Well, it was canceled shortly thereafter. Hopefully we can make it up at a later date.

To update a little bit. Connie and Earl Schell went to Florida for the winter months. Gladys Christensen was able to attend our meeting but we were missing Mildred Shea who had some physical problems and unable to attend. Several of our Sisters attended the Memorial Service for Betty Jean the following day.

We pray everyone will stay healthy and avoid the virus. Take this time to reach out to friends and Sisters with prayers and encouragement. We hope to see everyone before very long.

For the custard: Beat eggs; mix sugar and cornstarch. Add to eggs. Add milk and cook in double broiler until thick and smooth, stirring constantly. Add vanilla.

Use custard as filling on one layer of cake. Add strawberry preserves on second layer. Frost with icing, whipping cream or powdered sugar.

A Visit from Queen Margrethe II In 1976 Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II and her husband Prince Henrik had planned a 14 day trip to visit America. It was in honor of America’s 200th year celebration of independence.

Lillian Andersen and her husband Gordie of Kenosha, Wisconsin were very excited for the special guest to visit. It was May 14, 1976. Spring was in the air and the Queen was coming to a luncheon at the Danish Brotherhood of Racine Wisconsin. In the picture, Lillian Andersen is to the right of the Mayor of Kenosha, who is reading to the Queen. Her husband Gordie is to her right.

She remembers the day well.

Lillian had moved to America from Denmark in 1948 and as a child, loved the Royal Family. She had kept up with the Royal events from afar. When Prince Henrik was alone for a moment, Lillian remembers asking him if the Crown Prince Frederik was recovering well from his fall off his pony. The Prince looked at her very surprised that she knew about the Crown Prince’s fall. She remembers exchanging few words with the Queen as she was quite busy.

Lillian is a very active member of Katherine Lodge #20 of Kenosha, Wisconsin. She reminds us of the old traditions within the Sisterhood and makes sure that we carry on remembering our heritage.

On March 27, 1953, The Act of Succession gave women the right of succession to the Danish Throne.

HM Queen Margrethe II became the fist Danish Sovereign under this new Act of Succession on January 14, 1972.

With a Constitutional Monarchy, HM Quen Margrethe II’s main duties are to represent Denmark abroad and to be a figurehead at home.

HM The Queen enjoys engaging in different modes of artistic expression including painting, church textiles, book illustrations, scenography, embroidery, watercolours, and more. She has even designed sets and costumes for plays performed at Tivoli Gardens.

Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II will be celebrating her 80th birthday on April 16, 2020. Originally, the country had planned a monthlong celebration, but in light of the Coronavirus, the events have been cancelled.

DSS Angel Member Status The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels� posted.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you would be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category are welcome to participate by donating $1000 to the Danish Sisterhood, which can be sent to the National Treasurer.
