I can’t believe it’s already April! So much is happening in preparation for the upcoming National Convention. I do hope many of our members make the decision to attend, as it’s nice and centrally located and a good value. The hotel rates are only $117 a night and we have a packed agenda that starts on Thursday with a day at the Museum of Danish America. You will want to arrive on Wednesday so you’re well rested and don’t miss a single moment of the fun.

The entertainment for this convention is incredibly special! Our Friday evening guests are the “Bathtub Dogs”, which are an Omaha State University, all men’s a cappella choir that’s sure to bring some fun and laughter to the evening. Our more formal night, Saturday, we will be honored and entertained by Mads Tolling, a famous Danish-American violinist, violist, composer and two-time Grammy Award-Winner. Both evenings entertainment make this convention an event not to be missed.

Additionally, we have secured some outstanding raffle prizes, you’d be very happy to have tucked away in your suitcase for the trip home.

Just as a closing note. Please know, the National Convention is open to ALL members! If you were fortunate enough to be selected as your lodges’s delegate, that’s wonderful, but it’s not just limited to delegates. This is YOUR organization!

Attending and being apart of something as grand as this is a a right of all members. If you want to get excited about your membership, plan on attending. If you have someone that you want to bring that isn’t a member, bring them too, as they can see how much fun we have.

Dear Sisters, I just spotted the first little bits of green popping out through the soil today. Soon we will have flowers blooming and trees popping with brilliant shades of green. I’m very much looking forward to it.

The coming springtime reminds me of the beautiful gardens I saw in Denmark on both of my visits there. It seemed as though everyone had a garden and loved spending time in them.

Why wouldn’t you?

As the sprintime arrives and we head towards summer, let’s all take a look at what projects we are cultivating (pun intended).

Maybe your lodge is working on a fundraiser, or maybe you’re getting prepared for a social event, or maybe you’re still working on some ideas of what to do this year. Let’s all take a little inspiration from each other this year and continue to do great things together!

Looking ahead, we are always looking for more stories, reports, news, pieces of history, and photographs. We’d love to see more members participate and send in entries for the newsletter.

After all, being part of the Sisterhood means we all work together as part of the whole.

I look forward to hearing more from all of you as the year continues.

Fastelavn Party in Solvang In early March we held, what has become, our new annual Fastelavn Party. For all of us growing up in Solvang, we remember the good times to be had at Fastelavn. However, about 20+ years ago, it was discontinued and somewhat forgotten. So, a couple of years ago a few of us were tossing around ideas on how to bring back some of the old Danish traditions either through the Sisterhood or the church. Ultimately it ended up being a wonderful combination of the two. Bethania Lutheran Church was excited to take this on to bring in another family activity within the church, and especially a Danish one. We were thrilled to bring back some of the traditional customs we grew up with and bring that experience to our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It turned out that most of our decorating and cooking volunteers were Sisterhood members, so a win-win all around.

This was our 2nd year and a wonderful success. We hosted about 130 kids and adults.

For dinner we did a take on the Dane’s love of hotdogs - we offer all the usual fixings along with agurksalat, fried onions, Mormaor’s hot mustard, red cabbage, etc., served with salads, chips and drinks. For dessert we had the traditional Fastelavn boller, hot cross buns, and assorted bars and cookies. Delicious!!

We are so fortunate to have many talented and willing individuals to help with this event.

The room was strung with hundreds of lights, and very festive curly willow and garland centerpieces. As part of the church fundraising, we also had two amazing raffle prizes to give away

to the lucky winners. Turns out our Queen and fellow sister, Marie Jaeger, ended up with one of the raffle prizes as well, much to her surprise!!

Definitely her lucky night.

Harriet’s husband, Gene Madsen is our barrel maker. He made three barrels, a heavy duty one for the men, a slightly lighter one for the women, and a children’s barrel. Each made of wood and decorated with cats and streamers.

Everyone had their chance to whack the barrel several times with hopes of releasing the cat.

They ranged in age from about 5 – 99. Yes, 99!!

And he was amazing as you can see. Another of our sisters, Carolyn Martin, made our cats for us again this year - sooo darn cute – complete with a dress or tuxedo.

We were so excited to see many of our attendees, adults and children alike, come in costume. Always fun for the kids is the costume contest and parade. (We also had a face painter on hand who did a beautiful job for those who chose to do that rather than wear a costume.)

After the crowning of our royalty we put on our marching music and did the Grand March processional. The march was fun to bring back to our younger Sisterhood and church members who had not done or seen this before. All-in-all a great time was had by all!!

Flora Danica Lodge #177 Solvang

Update from Lodge #102 We had a lot of snow, ice, and cold weather in January, so we did not have a meeting. This was a good time to stay indoors with our families. Maybe, it was Hygge season!

February was cold, but our meeting attendance was great. Dues were collected and it was mentioned that $50 was given to the museum and $200 to the Food Bank. This was from our free will collections at each gathering. Some of our members attended the Brotherhood Fastelavns party. Christina’s son William won the best costume prize. Our member, Fern Faaborg passed away and she will be missed. Carol Rudisill gave us a day by day description of the SH Danish Island tour. Carol and her husband plan to be on the next tour! Linda Holz and some of the BH members were also on this trip.

In March, Christina opened the meeting with a reading about Danish Kristian Vedels’s hand crafted wooden birds. There was a discussion about the Heartland District and the SH conventions coming up this fall. We caught up on some of our members. Edith Paulsen has moved to Luther Park. Claudia Holcomb slipped on ice and broke her leg. We will be making plans for our May 5th brunch next meeting. Diann Weinman will host our June picnic. Marilyn Kramme shared her special Easter gaekkebrev (teaser) cards and read H.C. Andersen’s Snowdrop story. Carol Christiansen gave information about the Danebod Folk meeting and three family camps held in her hometown, Tyler, Minnesota. These are all great experiences and you can stay in a Folk School! She brought back a book of Danish poems that were read and discussed at the Fall Meeting. They were poems by the well known Danish poet and lyricist Benny Andersen. The book was titled Something To Live Up To and translated by Michael Goldman. This is an unique collection as each poem is written in Danish and then English. Carol read a couple of the poems.

The snow and ice are melting in the Midwest and causing some severe flooding. Otherwise, the snowdrops are blooming.

Hygge Lodge Visits Nordic Museum On March 17, 2019, nine Hygge #188 Sisters and one special spouse visited the new, state of the art, Nordic Museum in the Ballard section of Seattle. U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell recently introduced legislation to designate the museum as the National Nordic Museum which was passed into law this week. The designation is in recognition of the museum’s unique work to preserve, celebrate, and educate the American public about Nordic history, culture and art.

Denmark is appropriately represented as a hub of seafaring exploits, both to the west and east.

On special exhibit now is The Vikings Begin. For more information, search for the Kalmar Union and Margrethe I’s role.

We learned a lot and had a great time!

Chicago Lodge’s Winter Luncheon Draws a Crowd On March 3, 2019, Dagmar Lodge No. 4 hosted its annual Winter Luncheon at the Svithiod Hall in Chicago. 63 adults and 4 children attended this event.

Special guests included Consul General Jakob Skaarup Nielsen from The Consulate General of Denmark in Chicago and his family. Residents and staff from The Danish Home of Chicago attended including Danish Home CEO/President Scott Swanson and his wife Amy. Long-time lodge members Jill Perry and Jill Crooker celebrated their birthdays at the event among their friends and family.

The luncheon featured gravlax on French bread, herring on pumpernickel, frikadeller, red cabbage, potatoes, peas, and almond mousse.

Beverage options included beer, wine, akvavit, water, and soda. Following this hearty lunch, the new lodge officers were installed to the applause of the large crowd.

The new slate of officers included:

The luncheon ended with a popular raffle with 40 prizes including beautiful baskets, gift cards, jewelry, and more. Many of the baskets were created by lodge members at a separate basket stuffing event supervised by lodge member Tracey Nielsen.

Tusind tak to all the fantastic helpers for this event and to all those who donated raffle prizes, made monetary donations, purchased raffle tickets, prepared the food, and supported this fundraiser. Funds raised at this event are used to support the National Sisterhood scholarship, camp grant, and disaster relief funds as well as to help other worthwhile organizations including the Museum of Danish America and The Danish Home of Chicago.

News from Lodge #20 With spring attempting to make its appearance in Wisconsin, the sisters at the Katherine Lodge of Kenosha have stayed plenty busy over the winter months.

In January we swore in a new partial slate of officers for the next 2 year term. Marge Orth was re-elected as Treasurer and Anna Nielsen was re-elected as Secretary.

Vita Andersen was also re-elected as Guard and we welcomed Gitte Stupar as trustee.

February proved to be quite exciting for our members. At our meeting we had our semi-annual book club in which we discussed the book “Tower Blues: Solving the Riddle of Confinement” by Inga Wiehl. This fascinating book shadows the story of the Blue Tower and Lenora Ulfeldt, the daughter of King Christian the IV, who was locked in a tower for refusing to offer incriminating information about her and her husbands’ lives. Throughout her time in confinement she manages to remain sane through her ability to fight the fear and indifference of the prison system in the 1600s.

Also in February we had the pleasure of being invited to an International Festival at a local elementary school in Racine. As an International Baccalaureate School, Jefferson Lighthouse Elementary does a school wide inquiry project every year. Every year each classroom picks a country around the world and the class does research on all the different aspects of their country including customs, food, celebrations, etc.

Ms. Wurster’s third grade class chose Denmark and as part of their presentation they asked our lodge to join in and bring a variety of traditional Danish artifacts and information about the Danish Sisterhood.

We provided items such as Danish plates, our original scrapbook for our lodge, Kransekage pans, an antique aebleskiver pan, music, and a Lego presentation as well as other artifacts and photos.

For the event, attendees were given a passport at the door and were invited to walk the entire school to gaining stamps at each country they stopped at.

The school arranged to have performers from different countries attend and ethnic food was brought in for everyone to try as well. Our sisters Anna Nielsen and Mary Lou Nielsen attended and manned our display for the evening. Over the course of the event over 400 people stopped to talk and observe the different displays and learn more about our lodge and what we do.

We can’t wait for next year!

At our March meeting, Marge Orth gave a fascinating presentation on the customs of Easter and Lent including the many different types of food, cele-

bration, and traditions surrounding Fastelavn. While old traditions including putting a black cat in a barrel and beating it until it escaped, these days they fill the barrel with candy instead and beat it like a piñata. Much like our traditions around Halloween, the children get to dress up and go door to door singing for candy and treats.

As we look ahead to our next few months we are excited for our Midwest District Luncheon in April with our fellow sisters and mister sisters from Milwaukee and Chicago. In May we are having a memorial service to honor our sisters that have passed and June is our 4th Annual Summer Solstice bonfire on the 21st.

A Note about District Conventions

It is not uncommon for the DSS National Board to forego attending district conventions during a National Convention year. This cost-saving measure allows us to redirect funds for convention, knowing we will see you later this year.

District Secretaries can expect to receive copies of handouts to be presented to Lodge Delegates and District Board Members. All National Board members will be attending their respective District Conventions. Please direct your questions to those members. Of course, you are always invited to reach out to anyone of us on the board. See our contact information at the front of the DSS News.

We wish all of you successful conventions this year, and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Omaha in October!

DSS Angel Member Status The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you would be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category are welcome to participate by donating $1000 to the Danish Sisterhood, which can be sent to the National Treasurer.

The Sisters of Freja Lodge #36 are saddened by the loss of our Sister Vera Poulsen Shereyko who passed away on March 16, 2019 at St. Josephs Nursing Center in Woodbridge, New Jersey.

Vera was born in Denmark on November 4, 1928.

She had three Sisters May, Elena and Tove and two Brothers Johan and Svend who all predeceased her. Vera was married to Bernard Peter Shereyko who died in 2008.

Vera was a telephone operator for New Jersey Bell in Perth Amboy, she was also a member of the West Nine Golf Association and the Plainfield Curling Club. She was a member of the New Jersey Lapidary Society. Vera was very creative and talented, designing beautiful jewelry which she often wore to our meetings.

Vera joined the Danish Sisterhood Lodge #36. She was initiated November 22, 1991. She became very active in the Lodge activities. She was an Officer, Trustee in charge of our investments.

Vera leaves behind a large family with many nieces and nephews who cared for her.

The Sisters of Freja Lodge #36 will greatly miss our Sister Vera Paulsen Shereyko. We will drape our Charter at our next meeting and have a memorial service.

The sisters from Tacoma/Olympia Lodge 19 are very sorry to have to report that our sister Lois Halley passed away on February 4, 2019, just 10 days after her wonderful 90th birthday party. She knew her time was limited and she had a wonderful birthday party with over 100 guests. Lois was born in Calcutta, India to her Lutheran missionary parents on January 25, 1929. When she was 10 her family moved back to the States. She graduated high school in Albert Lea, Minnesota and college at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. She was married to John Halley, another teacher in 1955 and moved to San Jose, California where they both taught for years. In 1959, their first child, Anne was born, then came Joan and Sara. Lois and John loved to travel and went to a lot of different countries.

After retiring from teaching Lois and John started dealing antiques. Soon after their 50th anniversary John passed away and Lois decided to move to Tacoma, WA. where her daughter lived. She was involved in a lot of clubs, including the Danish Sisterhood Thyra Lodge #19. Lois was very involved in all our activities. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Lois is survived by her daughters and 10 grandchildren, plus her brother Al and sister Sharon, plus all her friends that she met on her journeys and at home.

Resolution Dagny Jessen Duus passed away on October 2, 2018. Dagny was born on August 4, 1925 in Froslev, Denmark to Boy Henry and Ane Kirstine Kragh Jessen.

On July 26, 2016, the family immigrated to the United States, entering through Ellis Island.

Dagny graduated from high school in Lexington, NE. She then attended Dana College in Blair, NE earning a 2 year teaching degree. She continued her education at St. Cloud State University with a degree as a Minnesota Educational Media Generalist. She worked full time for a year at Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler, MN, was an elementary teacher in Cozad, NE and Kelso, WA and was a Library and Media specialist in the Brainerd, MN school district for 25 years.

Dagny and Erik Martensen Duues were married August 3, 1951 in Cozad, NE. They have three children; Ava Hintz (Dennis), Daniel (Denise) and Mark (Marilyn), along with six grandchildren; Mara Hintz, April Hintz Stenberg (Titus), Shannon Duus, Joy Duus, Melody Duus and Jacob Duus.

Dagny was a charter member of Amber Lodge #186 of Brainerd, MN. She loved all things Danish and loved to share them with others. She loved to talk about growing up in a Danish community and about Danish traditions. Her Danish Sisters will miss her presence and many contributions.

Resolution Danish Sister, Shirley L. Oliver of Lincoln, Nebraska was born August 15, 1927 and passed away October 2, 2018.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer Oliver, four sisters and a stepson. Her father Axel Sorensen was born in Odense, Denmark. Her mother Eva Sorensen was of Czech descent. Shirley is survived by one brother, a step-daughter, step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley joined Danmarks Dotre, Lodge No. 90 in Lincoln on January 14, 1995. She was very proud of her Danish heritage and a loyal Sisterhood member for 23 years, always eager to attend meetings and participate in Danish traditions. Dedicated to her duties and helpful in many ways, she held the office of Marshal for several years in our Lodge as well as for the Nebraska-Colorado District Danish Sisterhood. Shirley and I were long time friends, traveling to our Lodge meetings, and various State and District conventions. We would reminisce about some of the previous meetings and conventions, tell stories, laugh and have such a good time. She thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to make new friends, meet DSS National Officers, renew friendships with Sisterhood and Brotherhood members across Nebraska and the Sisters of Ellen Lodge in Denver.

Her long time wish was to travel to Denmark. That came into fruition in 2012 when Shirley and her brother were able to tour that Country. Once home, she was ready to go back again. In the last few years of her life, her health started to decline. After various health mishaps, she always found the strength to once again bounce back to do the things that she always enjoyed. She never wanted to talk about her age, but always rallied the opportunity to celebrate her birthday. Shirley was 89 years young when she passed away. She is missed by many. I bet she misses us, too!
