Sindy Mikkelsen, National President Normally, I would be telling you all about our national board meeting, but much of that is going to wait until the next issue of the newsletter. The board is deep into convention mode preparing to make presentations, and a few will have already taken place by the time you read this.

One BIG concern was brought up at our Board meeting, by members of different lodges regarding contention with the membership. At our meeting, we spent a considerable amount of time working on the subject, dissecting the reasons, and possible solutions.

Some of that information will be given to you at District Conventions, so do plan to attend, or ask your lodge delegate for the packet of information that were given so they can share with the lodge this important data.

One of the interesting items to be share has to do with the predominate 5 generations of members we have and the differences each of these generations have about needs and wants. In almost every instance where we have been asked to get involved with a lodge issue, it stems from these generational differences. When each of the folks involved has an opportunity to explain their feelings on the topic, they all have a perfectly good explanation for their behaviors, which don’t align with each other. We have young members which have a need to get things done quickly, and with as little communication as possible. Additionally, we have older members that have a need for structure and order and want to do things the way things have always been done. Those two ideas alone are at the root of a lot of the contention.

The delivery that each has with expressing these issues is yet another subject.

We will continue to work with the lodges that have requested assistance, and we’re here to help. I ask this of all of you when talking with members in your lodge and especially when you’re working with new and younger members, try and step back and think about ways you can express your need for traditions, and yet be open to new ideas giving them a chance to show how they can bring their ideas into the mix. To the newer members, try to be open to traditions that have taken place in a lodge and perhaps be a bit more respectful of the time and energy members have put into making your lodge what it is today. Change happens slowly, and although it runs counter to the way life is today, patience, consideration, kind words and good communication can go a long way toward the success of the lodge.

Dear Sisters, April is here and it is still snowing in Minnesota.

I know that spring (or more likely, summer) will be here very soon, but it’s hard to be patient!

To hold me over, however, I have recently been getting photos and videos from my dear cousins in Denmark. It looks like spring has arrived in Denmark and I must say, it looks beautiful.

While I wait for the warmer weather to arrive, I try to keep myself busy. I read, I write, I take walks when I can, and I cook. I love to cook and to share it with friends and family. I especially love to cook anything Danish, and I bet many of you do too! If you have any Danish recipes that you’ve made recently, or have thought about pulling out of the recipe box again and you want to share them, please send them along! We love to include recipes from Sisters to help each other learn about and appreciate the many different Danish dishes out there.

We’ve also recently had a request from a sister–so many times, we have wonderful historical and cultural articles about Denmark or Danish traditions. But, we often forget to talk about where those traditions originated! As many of you know, there are often differences in tradition between those whose families were from Jutland versus Fyn versus Kobenhavn. Please be sure to share the origin of your stories so we can all learn more about the different traditions that are found across Denmark.

The January meeting of Amber Lodge, #186 was held at the Skillet Restaurant in Brainerd.

The meeting included the installation of 2018 officers; President- Barb Wenschlag, Vice President-Judy Andersen, Secretary-Heidi Haase, Treasurer-Dottie Bisted, Trustees- Barb Wenschlag (Historian), Amanda Bisted (Sick & Needy), Jane Matthies-Holtan (Correspondent) and Pam Dickinson (Marshall).

We also welcomed and installed new members Margaret Hill and LeAnn Plinske. We are so happy to have you join the Amber Lodge!

Time was also devoted to honoring Evelyn Jensen Matthies, a founding member of Amber Lodge, who passed away on December 19, 2017. Evelyn’s influence and presence will be greatly missed.

The February meeting was held at the Good Shepard Free Lutheran Church in Brainerd.

The program focused on the sharing of recipes and cookbooks important to individual members

Update from Ellen Lodge 21, Colorado Our first meeting was held on February 17, 2018 at Sister Tita Jergensen’s house. Since it was the first meeting of the year we had several things to discuss and go through for 2018. We started the meeting by welcoming our guest, Pia Hansen who will be our newest member of our lodge at our April meeting. Also Shaun Dillon, who is the father of our young members Brenna and Keelin Dillion, he was there to see his daughters receive their Sisterhood pin.

Brenna and Keelin are the granddaughters of Sister Theresa Sorenson. We also have another young member Bergen Evans, who is the granddaughter of our Sister Ethel Jergensen Evans, Bergen also received her Sisterhood pin at this meeting. Our lodge is so happy to have so many young members to be interested in our heritage and enjoying the Danish traditions.

We started supporting the Mountain Peace Shelter last year and will continue in 2018.

The shelter provides emergency shelter, advocacy and support services, and a 24/7 crisis hotline.

We donate the most needed items as well a gift cards, that the residents can use for gas, diapers and other necessities. We collect donations at our Summer Picnic, October Luncheon and at our Christmas Luncheon.

Our lodge has also set up a Sunshine committee that will visit Sisters in need. Sister Tita Jergensen has taken the lead with this committee. We have several elderly Sister that need our attention, and they will get visits and cards to brighten their day.

We have a new website, thanks to Sister Pia Edgar and Sister Emily Edgar. It is beautiful and we are very grateful for all the work they put in it.

After our meeting we were served a delicious lunch of “make your own Danish open sandwiches”. It was served in the perfect Danish style. Thank you to Sister Tita Jergensen and Sister Ethel Jergensen Evans, and with a lot of help from Sister Bergen Evans.

Our March meeting was held at Sister Lynne McEarchern’s clubhouse in Centennial,

CO. We welcomed three guests this time, Sister Dorthe Brush’s daughter-inlaw Paulina Brush and granddaughter Ella Brush. Also Sister Theresa Sorensen brought her granddaughter Alicia Lions.

currently working on updating our membership directory and it should be ready in April. Our meeting was short and swift and we handed the over the word to Sister Pia Edgar who gave us an amazing presentation of Handarbejdets Fremme (Handcrafters Guild). The Guild is celebrating their 90th an-

niversary on March 20th with an exhibition in Greve Museum, DK where our queen Margrethe II and the Crown Princess Mary will attend the opening. Sister Pia Edgar brought us on a journey of the cross stitch. It was very interesting and in ways surprising where this craft started and has move to and onwards. Being a lodge that enjoys craft, Sisters brought cross stitch that they had and it was presented on 6 long 6ft tables and stories were told about what each Sister brought. It was a wonderful afternoon. Sister Birgitte Ross had set up a table with cross stitch lesson for those who wanted to learn how to cross stitch. Little heart pattern had been made

before hand and our young members and guests had a go at stitching. They all did a great job!

Sister Lynne McEarchen and Sister Glenda Heil servered us a lovely lunch, with quiche and salad and a delicious homemade cake. It was a great day of hand craft and socializing.

Ellen Lodge 21 will meet again in April with business, more heritages and socializing.

News from Danske Damer Lodge 185 Danske Damer Lodge had a sad year in 2017 since two of our charter members died.

Joan Sorensen died unexpectedly in June, she was a past President, Treasurer and National delegate. Carol Isgro died in August after a long illness, she was also a past President, and active in our lodge. We miss them a LOT!

In April we had our Annual Spring Luncheon at Marilyn Brandt’s lovely home, where Danish figurines and artifacts abound.

We celebrated St Hans in June at the home of Marilyn (Marilyn Brandt’s daughter) complete with bonfire and witch.

In October we participated in the Leif Erikson Celebration held in Cleveland since 2001 when the bust of Leif Erikson was erected by our Scandinavian community. It is hosted alternately by the lodges of Swedes, Norwegians and Danes who provide the Akvavit skaal we have by the bust of Leif, followed by lunch at Shooters restaurant.

The Danish Christmas party initially started by the Danish Brotherhood many years ago has now become ours to host due to their lodge’s dwindling membership. The party is held at a hall where the food is American except we always have pork roast, red cabbage and Danish cookies. There is singing in Danish and English around the Danish decorated tree followed by Danish Sisterhood News, April 2018

Danish Folk dancing. Santa also makes an appearance and the party ends with a raffle and a good time is had by all.

News from Lodge #102 Des Moines, IA The Iowa weather prevented us from having a meeting in January, but we had a productive one in February.

Claudia Holcomb has agreed to be our new treasurer replacing Sue Fisher. We thanked Sue for being so dedicated in that position. Sadly, the Dike Lodge has dissolved, but some of their members are making plans to join our Lodge. As mentioned in the latest SH News we have seven new members. Velkommen to all. The total count for our Christmas Frokost was 25 guests with a total of 48 in attendance. We had a wonderful time enjoying this yearly event. President Christina Hudson told us she was expecting a baby girl in July. We are expecting her to be a SH member in the future.

Sharon Sorensen Opland was our guest at our March meeting. Her father was born in Denmark and she has visited family there several times.

We introduced ourselves and told about our Danish connections. Several of our members attended the Fastelavns festivities with the Brotherhood and Luther

Memorial friends. Marilyn Kramme shared her Gækkebrev cards she had received from her Danish relatives.

One has to guess who sent them. These are a tradition in Denmark when the snowdrops are blooming and it is Easter time. Gæk means fool and brev is a letter. Cheryl Brinkman and Jane Paulson attended a meeting with the Davenport Lodge and reported some great events are being planned. We will be having a bake sale in connection with the rummage sale at Luther Memorial. Our group will be hosting the May Brunch which will be held at the DesMoines Police Officer’s Recreation Center. Linda Holz gave us information from the National SH Board meeting she attended in Vancouver. We made a motion and voted to make a change in the constitution regarding the Historian’s compensation. As always, delicious refreshments were served to end our meeting.

News from Lodge #3 Jane Paulsen & Cheryl Brinkman of Lodge #102, Des Moines, Iowa joined 9 members of Lodge #3 for our March 8, 2018 meeting at the Best Western Plus Steeplegate Inn, Davenport, Iowa, the location of the Heartland District Convention coming up September 14-16. The photo is of Jane Paulsen (on the right), Secretary-Treasurer of our Heartland Sisterhood presenting Sarah Bengtson (on left), President of Lodge #3, the framed certificate for Outstanding District Member that was announced at the 2017 Heartland Convention in MN. We appreciated Jane & Cheryl making the drive from Des Moines, to join us with ideas and helpful direction with the upcoming convention.

There is much to see and do in the Quad City area, from the John Deere Pavilion in Moline, IL to the Rock Island Arsenal (much history from the Civil War era) to the American Pickers in LeClaire, Iowa...plan on exploring our area here on the Mississippi River. On Saturday afternoon, September 15, one of the options of “Local Things to See & Do” during the Heartland District Convention will be a 1.5 hour Mississippi River sightseeing cruise on the Riverboat Twilight, leaving from LeClaire, Iowa, only 15 minutes from Davenport.

Enjoy the beautiful view as you travel north on the river with the Captain’s narration of the area history, river facts, commerce and wildlife. We will make arrangements for box lunches. Our April 12th meeting will be at the Clinton County Historical Museum at 11:30 and Jan Hansen will talk about the Danish monarchy then.

We will meet there again on May 10th at 11:30 for more convention planning and plotting. Both meetings will be “bring your own lunch” fests.

MARCH AT THE DANISH SISTERHOOD DAGMAR LODGE#4 After a busy February, the Danish Sisters at the Dagmar Lodge didn’t really slow down in March.

Winter brings one of the biggest fundraisers of the lodge: The Annual Winter Luncheon Fundraiser at Svithiod Hall in Chicago.

This was scheduled on Sunday, March 4 this year.

So as in the last few years, the sisters made preparations for the big event on the Saturday before the luncheon, the 3rd of March. During this day, the sisters, with help from some generous family members prepared the venue, set up the tables and decorations and respective settings, set up the raffle drawing prizes, and most importantly prepared the food on the menu of the big event.

Everyone found the food scrumptious and satisfying. The cash bar, which featured a variety of spirits and non-alcoholic drinks, also included Aalborg snaps which is a must for any Danish lunch. During the luncheon, the “new” set of officers for the new year, 2018, was also inducted. The officers were mostly from the 2017 set of officers renewing their commitment this year with the blessing of the members. Congratulations to them and thanks for committing to another year of serving the Dagmar Lodge.

After dinner, the winners of the raffle were drawn. Prizes for the raffle drawing consisted mostly of donated Danish goods and services from Danish business and private donors. There were prizes for both adults and kids alike. After the drawing, there were a lot of lucky and extremely happy winners who enjoyed their prizes.

Overall, the event was a smashing success. Although there was a little less turnout this year in comparison to last year, we actually ended up having a greater profit because of the help and donations that we received both from our own sisters and consistent loyal supporters. THE DAGMAR LODGE ANNUAL WINTER LUNCHEON FUNDRAISER(MARCH 4, 2018) The next day, Sunday, 4th of March, was the big day and it was a success. There was a good turnout of around 45-50 people. The menu consisted of Danish classics such as “sild og karrysalat” (herring with curry salad) as appetizer, “frikadeller med kartofler, brunsovs, og rødkål” (Danish meatballs with gravy, red cabbage & potatoes) as the main course, and finally, “æblekage”(mashed apples/ Danish Sisterhood News, April 2018

Thanks for all the help everyone and congratulations on yet another great accomplishment!

MEETING ON MARCH 18, 2018 On Sunday, March 18, we had our regular meeting of the Dagmar Lodge at the Danish Home of Chicago.

We started the afternoon having our regular “hyggelig” coffee and dessert with the residents of the Home. Afterwards, we had the formal meeting, where a new member, Jan Glintborg, was inducted. Finally, we did a traditional påske-inspireret (Easter-inspired) craft, called gækkebrev.

It was pretty “hyggelig” and fun doing it with the sisters and always important to learn Danish traditions and try to continue and pass it on hopefully to the next generation. God Påske! (Happy Easter!).

Resolution Else Keis Scranton of Madison, CT suddenly departed this life on her 93rd birthday, January 27, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Joergen Peter and Agnes (Petersen) Keis of Bogoe, Denmark. She was predeceased by the late Arthur J. Scranton, Jr., whose favorite story was how they met while he was touring Copenhagen as a member of the 7gth Infantry Division Dance Band, that he proposed after three days and married Else three months later. They celebrated 62 years of marriage. Else was predeceased by two brothers: Harold Keis and Martin Keis of Denmark and survived by her twins: daughter Jeanne (Ric) Lloyd of Milford, CT and son Jan (Christine) Scranton of Braintree, MA; three grandchildren, Daniel, Sonja and Nina. She was a Girl Scout Leader and recently honored with a Luncheon for being a member of the Danish Sisterhood for 50 years. She will be fondly remembered for beautiful knit sweaters, Danish scenes lovingly cross-stitched, pies, cupcakes, roasts with delicious gravy, and Little Christmas Eve with a Danish Christmas tree all aglow.

She will be greatly missed by Freden Lodge #12.

Fresno Lodge #149 - Fremtiden

Project with a retirement home during Christmas time. Doris was appointed to secure the birthday treats.

After celebrating our 100th year, founding day of Fremtiden Lodge #149 of Fresno recently and having 4 members passing away it was decided to continue on with the lodge.

Officers were elected and installed on February 13, 2018. Margaret Raven was elected for a 4th term asa President. Doris Lastrato was elected as Vice President for a second term. Martha Nielsen, the delegate to the National Convention, was voted as secretary-treasurer and trustee. Lanell McKay was elected as trustee along with Margaret Raven. Phyllis Graham and Carol Smith were appointed to serve the condolence duties together. Mary Christensen was appointed as corresponding secretary. Ruth Christensen and Mary Christensen will start the Service

On March 13, eight members and two guests of Fremtiden Lodge met and decided to keep in touch with the National Sisterhood News every three months at least.

FIRST MEETING OF 2018 FOR NORTHSTAR LODGE #100

Port Huron. A email from Glenda Madrid concerning a proposal for delegates to vote on at MOO convention was reviewed.

Carol Schlaud reported that the Negaunee Lodge has been added to the MOO District.

We decided to cancel the May meeting, since it is so close to the convention. Our next meeting will be Sunday, June 3rd, at Liberty Lanes in Sandusky, to celebrate our 111th Anniversary of the founding of our Lodge. The next regular meeting will be July 12th, at the church, at noon.

New address sheets were passes around to everyone. The treasurer’s checkbook was audited following the meeting.

The first meeting of the year 2018 took place April 5, 2018, at Hope Lutheran Church at noon, with 6 in attendance.

A lovely lunch was provided by co-hostesses, Carol Schlaud and Kristine Wiegert.

The meeting was called to order by vice-president, Carol Schlaud. Secretaries minutes of last meeting and the treasurer’s reports were approved as given.

A report was given by Dawn Grabitz on the items that were donated to Eva’s Place (a shelter for abused woman and children) in December. The correspondence was gone over, mostly concerning the MOO convention our Lodge is hosting May 4 & 5 in
