Editorial: Well, here it is my first ICE magazine. I hope you all like it. It has indeed been interesting putting this together and I have enjoyed it immensely. The position of editor is not yet mine, until and if, I am voted into the position at the AGM. Meantime, I am practising! President’s Letter: Well here we are in the last month of the year and only a few weeks until Christmas, at least we know it won't be snowy here on the Costa del Sol. What a great 28th birthday party we had, here's to our 29th. Unfortunately we can't hold our usual Christmas lunch at the Club so our outing to Neli G's will have to be our main celebration meal so don't forget to book your place with Maggie. Don't forget the December trip to Malaga lights. Maureen Baldwin Winkle is opening the Club for her usual Christmas Day get together, please remember to donate some secret santa pressies. January sees our Welcome Back party with Stelvis and the rambler's lunch towards the end of January. January's trip is to Malaga sales and or car museum. Who would have thought way back in May when we signed the contract for the lift it would take 6 months before we could use it, but, what an asset to the Club it is, I overheard one person say it's the best thing since sliced bread! Happy Christmas and a healthy and peaceful new year to all members and their families. Sue

I.C.E. CLUB GOES UP IN THE WORLD

Well, one floor only!!!!!!!! The lift is now completed and was presented to the members for use on Thursday 10th November. Joan Thompson and Ray Oldfield, founder members of the ICE Club, assisted by Rob Potter maintenance manager, took the first official ride in the new lift. What started as an inquiry during 2015 from Noreen and Dan Cook, having stated more and more members are becoming less able to use the stairs. The subject was brought to the committee at the 2015 AGM and a statement within the minutes by the past President was that a lift was within long term plans. The current President stated and minuted within AOB of that AGM that if the committee decided a lift was feasible a vote would be taken among members at a future AGM. As my former employment was within the lift industry I was asked by the committee to investigate the possibility installing a disabled persons lift within the stairwell area and making this a feature within a glass shaft. Five lift companies were approached, one declined and one failed to respond, quotations were received from three companies. A decision was then taken, that during November a vote would take place during an EGM, on a selection of proposals regarding installing a lift and/or toilet facilities on the upper floor. A 66% vote being required for a proposal to be passed. On this occasion the lift received 59% of votes so was not passed. A proposal was then received from Barbara Blackburn and seconded by Angela Franks, for a lift only. That a vote took place during the 2016 AGM. On this occasion, 91% of members present agreed that a lift should be installed and the committee agreed this would be done in the best interests of the club. Many discussions took place and it was agreed that having a lift installed within the stairwell would not be the most favorable decision, hence the lift being in its current position, within its own purpose built shaft. It now looks as though it has always been there. An architect and builder were employed by the club, and the Spanish lift company, General Elevadores XXI, S.L. ,was given instructions to supply a lift able to carry 3 persons or a wheelchair with one carer. The works being overseen by our maintenance manager Rob Potter. Some difficulties were experienced along the way but all has turned up as a great investment by the club respecting the needs for less able amongst its members. All up and down from here on!!!!!! Terry Smith 5

PAST EVENTS Saturday 22nd October – Autumn Fayre A well-attended event as it is each year. The homemade cake stall sold out very quickly, and queues soon formed once the bacon and sausage sandwiches appeared. Unfortunately, not many competitors for the recycling or photo competitions, the flower arranging having been already cancelled due to lack of interest. Please, next year let’s have more participation from members. A very good exhibition by our photo judge, Debra Coleman, was on display. All the games soon took off as the club opened members being very competitive and the bar was kept busy. Winners as follows: Photos: Beach, Richard Wood. Estepona, Richard Wood Recycling: 1st Di Hackett 2nd Keith Rumsey Treasure Hunt: Chick Danby Quoits: Alistair Frew Golf: Cheryth Ranshaw Skittles: Audrey Jinks Shove Halfpenny: Helen Rumsey Darts Meat Pie: 176 Ted Lunniss Darts Secret Number: Brenda Taylor Thanks to Doug for taking over the organising at short notice, all those who helped set up the event and man the activities, and of course the bar staff. A very successful event. Terry Smith Saturday 5th November - I.C.E. 28th Birthday Party “Oh what a night, it really was a night”! On arriving at Paraiso Golf, we were welcomed by President Sue & Hubby Rob. A welcome drink was also waiting for us. Terry’s table plans were in place to show us where to sit and the room, filled with ICE members dressed to the nines, looked great, with the tables beautifully decorated. Having taken our seats, the glamorous raffle ticket squad swooped in, assuring us that every ticket was a winner! The meal was so nicely presented, delicious to eat and enjoyed by all. The chef was congratulated a little later in the evening before rushing off to see his two-month-old baby. As we started our desserts, Mandy started to sing quietly... this was to change a bit later when she had us all on the dance floor which quickly digested the lovely meal. The champagne raffle was drawn with lots of “It’s me” squeals. Serious dancing then took place as Mandy’s tempo rose. Bodies writhed... some in time with the music! As a bit of a change, Mandy handed the mike to Gerry, her husband, to serenade us. Talk about attitude, Neil Diamond, watch out! As has become traditional at out Birthday Parties, Terry & Carole Wayne, on behalf of Blevin Franks, donated several restaurant vouchers which were very well received. Mandy & Gerry then kept the dance floor full until 11.30pm. when we had to go home. What a couple of wonderful entertainers they are! Those of us who were on the coach were tired but happy, it was nice not to have to drive, thanks to Terry for organising it. After the quiet Loughrans alighted at Cancelada, all hell broke loose! with the noisy lot singing all the way home! I’m sure you’ll all agree that it was a great Birthday Party. Thanks to all who made it happen. Looking forward to the 29th. in 2017. Margaret Loughran

PAST EVENTS Wednesday 2nd November - Another of Doug’s Popular Mystery Trips Well after last years unforgettable mystery trip, Doug had to ‘sort’ through the ‘dregs’ and ‘dross’ of his ideas to come up with a new venue and not follow the rumours at the club that this trip could be worse than last years ‘rubbish’ at the ‘recycling’ depot. Those members that ‘refuse’ this trip missed a treat what was not ‘offal’ or a ‘waste’. There was a bit of a worry as some rain had been forecast and Doug had arranged an alternative venue. He need not have worried as it turned out to be a very pleasant warm and sunny day. Once all pickups were completed the first mystery stop was Parque De La Paloma a very tranquil area situated right in the heart of Benalmádena Costa, Arroyo de la Miel. It covers some 200,000m² and is less than 300m from the coast. This green oasis is entirely man-made and was only opened in the mid-1990s. Over the years, the park has become something of an impromptu animal sanctuary, with rabbits, peacocks, goats, emus, donkeys and various other animals. Some of them wander around freely and are always a big hit with visitors. The bigger animals, the goats, peacocks and emus have been placed and are cared for by the Benalmádena town hall. The rabbits, chickens, guinea pigs and hamsters have been abandoned and have since made the park their home. All of the animals are accustomed to humans and are very tame. The most recent additions to the park are two donkeys, 'Milagros' and 'Dotty' one of which kept turning its back as soon as Audrey tried taking its photo (she frightens me as well!). There are several lakes, including one large one, with scores of ducks, swans and turtles. You can walk around the lake's perimeter and spot animals in the undergrowth. A large area houses one of Europe's richest collections of cacti and succulents. Aptly named the cactus garden, el Jardin de Cactus. The garden offers more than 2,000 cacti from over 450 different species. They have been carefully labelled and divided up according to their country of origin. There are several cafes and kiosks situated throughout the park one of these being sheltered amongst the trees and was the first watering hole for members. The park is easy to find, has ample parking, and would be a great place to take visitors especially grandchildren as there is a large adventure play park. Our next mystery stop was to Benalmádena Port where we had free time to select our own choice of restaurant for lunch, that choice of which is vast. After lunch, the ’girls’ made their own mystery choice of a stop at Dunnes at Mijas Costa for some retail therapy. The shop, under refurbishment, will soon be completed to vastly increase its size, what is already completed is very much better presented and has a more modern feel. So armed with shopping bags the ’girls’ returned to the coach much happier. So after a very delightful day it was off home. Thanks Doug for an excellent trip and we all agreed he should be ’recycled’ for another trip in the near future. Terry Smith

Thursday 10th November Club Lunch at Marlows. Owing to the fact that we were short of chefs for our usual Thursday Lunch, it was decided to offer a visit to Marlows Restaurant for Fish and Chips. The event, organised by Tracy Bird, proved very popular with 43 people booking tickets. There was a choice of main courses, for those who didn’t want fish, side orders and a choice of desserts. Also included in the price was a free drink. It was a lovely lunch. Thank you Tracy for organising it. Sheila Fox

PAST EVENTS LAST TANGO IN LITTLE GRIMLEY by David Tristram, performed by the I.C.E. Players Sex puts bums on seats! That was the message of the play-within-a-play for four actors that Club members and guests were treated to on the 11th, 12th and 13th of November. Not, you understand, sex of the raunchy and explicit kind you might find on an adult movie channel (I’m told), but more in the nudge-nudge-wink-wink tradition of the Carry On films, Are you being served and Allo Allo. Our characters were the four remaining members of a village drama group: two actresses played by Helen Warrick-Evans (Joyce) and Louise Rowe (Margaret), the director, playwright and actor (Gordon) played by Keith Ranshaw, and the set-builder and unwilling actor (Bernard), played by Adrian Hall. As we followed their desperate attempts to keep their group alive by focusing on the sexual misdemeanours of their fellow villagers, they brought to mind such well-loved comedians as Ronnie Barker, Hattie Jacques, Beryl Reid and Tony Hancock, to name but a few. Happily the gamble paid off – because sex sells, as Gordon said, and Margaret relented and got her **** out - and they not only played to full houses but were invited to join the cabaret that was to take over their theatre, and the curtain came down on a celebratory tango. It was an evening of great fun for members, and we hope too for the Theatre Studies students from Sotogrande International School, who attended the first performance as part of their A Level course. (We also hope their tender young ears weren’t too shocked!) Many congratulations to the actors, to Julie Wood, the Producer and Director, and to the other Players who provided the technical, organisational and moral support. We look forward eagerly to your next production! Sally Holloway

Our Treasure Hunt Prize

Our prize for this year’s Treasure Hunt around Sabinillas was a 70€ voucher for El Estribo Argentinean Restaurant on the Paseo Maritimo in Sabinillas, along with three bottles of wine - red, white & rose. Doug & I were looking after our Grandson, Iker, for the weekend so we booked a table for 3 for dinner on Saturday 12th November at El Estribo. We all had a really great meal - Doug & Iker had Solomillo de Ternera (huge) and I had Lemon Chicken (excellent). We were made to feel really welcome as soon as we got there and both the food and service were excellent. I can really recommend this restaurant - what a great prize. The Treasure Hunt itself was a really good morning out and great fun. Thank you, Sue & Rob - we look forward to the next one. Submitted by Joanna Mitchell 11

Time To Get Your Tax Planning In Order By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks

952 799 752

terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com

There are almost certainly more exciting things in your calendar than tax deadlines. Without proper tax planning, however, not only could you pay more taxes than necessary, you could end up on the wrong side of the authorities. While the deadline for your Spanish income and wealth tax returns is still a while away, a significant date is coming up next month. When you submit your tax declarations in 2017, you need to provide a snapshot of your assets as at 31 December 2016. To ensure you are satisfied with your tax position, now is the time to review the way your assets are structured, before the end of the calendar year.

Why you need to get it right There are two crucial reasons to get your tax planning right. First, you need to make sure your arrangements are fully compliant in Spain and anywhere else you have assets or heirs. This can be particularly complex for expatriates with cross-border interests. Getting it wrong may be easier than you think, with costly consequences. Second, your tax arrangements should suit your particular aims and circumstances, and work well in both Spain and the UK. While some structures can seem similar, their tax benefits can vary significantly. Spain can be a very tax-efficient place to live for expatriates, but you need specialist, up-to-date knowledge of local, UK and international tax regimes to achieve the best results. Declaring your taxes correctly All residents in Spain must report overseas assets worth over €50,000 as at 31 December each year. To do this, you must complete the Modelo 720 form every March, in addition to annual income and wealth tax returns. The penalties for failing to declare assets correctly can be severe, so make sure you submit the correct information on time. Next year, the Spanish authorities will find it much easier to uncover omissions and inaccuracies in tax declarations. Under the new ‘global automatic exchange of information’ regime, Spain will join around 100 countries sharing information on taxpayers’ assets and income. Any discrepancies in tax return and Modelo 720 declarations, even if unintentional, could cost thousands in penalties. Securing tax-efficient arrangements As well as ensuring you meet your reporting obligations in Spain, your tax planning should aim to shelter your assets using tax compliant arrangements. For example, tax-efficient investment wrappers, offered through a Spanish compliant bond, could legitimately reduce tax on savings and investments. However, personalised, professional tax advice is essential to establish the most suitable approach for you. The Spanish government’s stringent approach to tax evasion makes it especially important to take advice to get it right. An adviser with cross-border expertise can help you enjoy favourable tax treatment while offering peace of mind that you are meeting your tax obligations, here and in the UK. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. HISTORY OF ‘THE LAST POST’ BUGLE CALL The Last Post was first published in the 1790s, just one of the two dozen or so bugle calls sounded daily in British Army camps. At that time soldiers didn't have wristwatches, so they had to be regulated in camp, They had to have a trumpet call or a bugle call to tell them when to get up, when to have their meals, when to fetch the post, when to get on parade, when to go to bed and all other things throughout the day. The soldier's day started with the call of Reveille, and came to a close with the First Post. This indicated that the duty officer was commencing his inspection of the sentry-posts on the perimeter of the camp. The inspection would take about 30 minutes, and at the end there would be sounded the Last Post, the name referring simply to the fact that the final sentry-post had been inspected. For decades this was the sole use of the call, a signal that the camp was now secure for the night, closed till morning. It was not until the 1850s that another role began to emerge. It was an era when many military bandsmen, and most bandmasters, were civilians and were under no obligation to accompany their regiments on overseas postings. So when a soldier died in a foreign land, there was often no music available to accompany him on his final journey. And, necessity being the mother of invention, a new custom arose of charging the regimental bugler to sound the Last Post over the grave. The symbolism was simple and highly effective. The Last Post now signalled the end not merely of the day but of this earthly life. And, as the practice developed - back home now as well as abroad - it was then followed by few moments of silent prayer and by the sounding of Reveille, the first call of the day, to signify the man's rebirth into eternal life. By the time that World War One broke out in 1914, the Last Post was already part of the national culture. During the war, it was played countless times at funerals in northern Europe and other theatres, and it was played at funerals, memorials and services back home. It was already becoming a familiar sound, but with mass enlistment and then conscription, the walls that had long existed between the civilian and the soldier broke down completely, and a piece of music that had once belonged exclusively to military culture was adopted by a wider society. QUESTION: Why do some people top their Christmas tree with a fairy? ANSWER: One Christmas, many years ago, four of Santa’s elves, and the trainee elves were not producing the toys as fast as the regular ones. Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule. Then Mrs Claus told Santa that her mother was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence. Then, when he began to load the sleigh, one of the boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the gifts. Feeling increasingly annoyed, Santa went into the house for a cup of coffee and a shot of whisky. When he opened the cupboard, he discovered the elves had been at the drink and there was nothing left. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the coffee pot and it broke into hundreds of pieces. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten the straw it was made from. Just then the doorbell rang and when Santa opened the door, on the step was a little fairy with a big Christmas tree. This fairy had been given the job of distributing trees across Lapland, but had missed someone out. It would take ages to work out whose it was and by then it would be too late. The fairy was not only careless, but impolite. She greeted Santa with “Hey Fatboy! I made a mistake. Where we going to put this?” Thus, began the tradition of the fairy on top of the Christmas tree.

Brain Teaser A Screening Programme As you have been feeling under the weather recently you make an appointment to see your doctor. After she has examined you and given you the all-clear, she asks whether you would agree to take part in a screening programme to test for a genetic defect that has been linked with an aggressive form of cancer in later life. Although you agree, you ask if you can have more information about it. She tells you that the defect has been found in just 1 per cent of people. Quite reasonably you ask about the reliability of the test and she tells you that 90 per cent of tests for the defect successfully detect it, while only 9.6 per cent of the tests result in false positives. If you were to get a positive test result, what is the probability that you actually have the defect? Answers in Next Edition. 34

JUST FOR A SMILE

CHRISTMAS FRUIT CAKE RECIPE Ingredients : 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 4 large eggs 2 cups dried fruit 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1 bottle whisky 1 cup brown sugar 8 oz nuts Juice of 1 lemon

Method: Sample the whisky to check for quality Take a large bowl. Check the whisky again. To be sure it is of the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer, beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one tsp. sugar and beat again. Make sure the whisky is still okay. Cry another tup. Turn off the mixerer. Break two eggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the dried fruit. Mix on the turner. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers, pry it loose a drewscriver. Sample the whisky to check for tonsisticity. Next sift, two cups of salt. Or something. Who cares? Check the whisky. Now sift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Spoon. Of sugar or something. Whatever you can find. Grease the oven. Turn the cake tin to 350 degrees. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Throw the bowl out the window, check the whisky again and go to bed.

I pulled into the crowded parking lot at the local shopping centre and rolled down the window to make sure my Labrador Retriever Pup had fresh air. She was stretched full-out on the back seat and I wanted to impress upon her that she must remain there. I walked to the curb backward, pointing my finger at the car and saying emphatically, "Now you stay. Do you hear me?" "Stay! Stay!" The driver of a nearby car, a pretty young blonde, gave me a strange look and said, (this is going to hurt read on) "Why don't you just put it in 'Park'?" SUDOKU ANSWER
