Heritage Donor Spotlight Victoria University will establish the Dorothy I.M. Black Scholarship, an in-course scholarship for students achieving excellence in the course of their studies. Dorothy Black Vic 3T5 was a Heritage Donor who spent her entire life dedicated to learning. Considered a strict but fair teacher, Black was awarded the Dorothy Black on her 99th birthday inaugural Smeaton-Muir Award in 1979 in recognition of her contributions to the teaching profession in Ottawa. Her cousin, David Templin, describes her as someone who loved people but treasured her independence. “She never married and lived on her own until the very end,” says Templin, “but she was not a lonely or unhappy person. She never stopped reading or learning. She never lost her curiosity. She was always asking questions and was always interested in the answers. I think she would say, ‘being interested is a higher virtue than being interesting.’” Black was a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women for over 50 years. She was also an avid photographer and traveller. Black travelled around the world twice and visited every one of its continents. She passed away two weeks short of her 101st birthday. One of her former students remarked upon her passing that “teachers came and went but Miss Black remains in my heart forever.”
