Breathing Space by william robins As I write this message on a beautiful sunny evening in early fall, the Victoria quad is humming with activity. In its tranquil and evocative setting, students today, like students past, are reading books, playing games, and discussing the meaning of life or at least the prospects for the upcoming weekend. There are also city-dwellers and visitors passing through, many of them pausing here to pass the time. There are strollers and bicycles aplenty, and even a walking-tour group that includes the Vic quad on its itinerary. The quad is a much-loved oasis in the centre of the city.

The students of Victoria and Emmanuel Colleges benefit mightily from having the city at their doorstep. They love how their historic campus provides a serene home during their studies. At the same time they flow out from the campus right into the city, enjoying nearby museums, the tree canopy of Queen’s Park, the stores and coffee shops of Yonge Street, Bloor Street and Yorkville, and a dedicated subway stop from which to head further afield.

Integration between Vic and the city works both ways. Students use the stunning Isabel Bader Theatre for lectures during the school day, while the wider public arrives in the evenings and weekends for concerts and events, including, for many years, the Toronto International Film Festival. The academic buildings are much used by external friends for weddings and concerts, and for conferences by local companies, hospitals, charitable organizations and government departments. The Lester B. Pearson Garden for Peace and Understanding provides respite to Victorians and Torontonians alike.

I found in the annals of Vic’s history that when the University planned its move from Cobourg to Toronto, an idea was floated that Vic should create its new campus far from the bustle of the city.

After considering an 11-acre site west of where Casa Loma now stands, Vic chose to put down its roots at its current site, across from Queen’s Park, where the Victoria College building was erected in 1892. From this location Vic could contribute richly to the activities of the University of Toronto as a federated partner. From this urban hub, Vic could be enlisted in the cultural and educational ambitions of the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario.

Ever since, Victoria—in the demographics of its student populations, in its vision of education as a process that extends beyond the classroom, and in its celebrated campus spaces— has helped to shape, and has in turn been decisively shaped by, the vibrant city around it.

Place matters. We all have a need for quiet spaces of thought and reflection, especially when studying. At the same time we need spaces where we circulate among others, where encounters happen, and where communities are created. Many alumni of Victoria and Emmanuel Colleges exemplify how our students bring what they learn on campus into the wider arenas of local, national and international encounters. Such alumni range from Lester B. Pearson Vic 1T9, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for whom our Garden of Peace and Understanding is named, to those whose concerns about place, community and environment are highlighted in this issue of Vic Report. More and more students choose Vic because of our rich traditions of combining self-reflection with openness to the surrounding world.

I welcome them and the entire Vic community to another year in which our academic pursuits are integrated into our wider social relationships.  2

Leader and Transformer of Theological Education Retirement of Principal Mark G. Toulouse Mark Toulouse has announced that he will retire from his position on June 30, 2017. Toulouse has served as principal of Emmanuel College since January 2009 during which time the College’s educational profile has been enhanced by new academic programs introduced during his tenure, including the MA and PhD degrees, the Certificate of Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy as part of the Master of Pastoral Studies and a proposed Bachelor of Theological Studies program.

His innovative work with new constituencies, including the creation of Muslim and Buddhist Studies programs, has

helped Emmanuel College become a prominent forum for dynamic interreligious engagement. Toulouse has also revitalized the physical spaces of the College, spearheaded advancement efforts, and expanded the areas of recruitment, the registrar’s office, and contextual education.

“Under Professor Toulouse’s eight years of leadership, Emmanuel College has strengthened its longstanding tradition of academic excellence and has contributed notably to the transformation of theological education in Canada and North America,” says William Robins, president of Victoria University.

“Emmanuel College and Victoria University are stronger thanks to Mark—an astute administrator, extraordinary leader and inspiring colleague.” 

New Executive Director of Alumni Affairs and Advancement Vic Welcomes Louise (Huntingford) Yearwood Vic 8T6

Louise Yearwood brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new role gained through many years of active leadership and engagement in the promotion of education. She assumed her post on June 27.

For the past decade Yearwood has held the position of executive director, advancement & community relations at Havergal College, where she held responsibility for the advancement, alumnae relations, and marketing communications portfolios. Prior to this, she was the senior development officer for the Faculty of

Communication & Design at Ryerson University, the director of development at the Gardiner Museum, and the director of development at the Royal Conservatory of Music.

“I am honoured to be back at Vic in the role of executive director for the Office of Alumni Affairs and Advancement,” says Yearwood. “We are fortunate to have wonderful alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends, all of whom engage with us in our efforts to make Vic the best possible place it can be.

Gifts of financial support and time—volunteered freely and with great pride—help sustain our community and make Vic a very special place.”

Yearwood takes over the position from Larry Davies who retired from his position as executive director after 31 years. 

Victoria University Appoints New Registrar Yvette Ali Joins Vic Campus Yvette Ali joined the Vic community in July as its new registrar. For the past four years, Ali served as associate faculty registrar and director at U of T’s Faculty of Arts and Science. She has also served as the associate director of the Transcript Centre. Prior to that, Ali was director of professional and international programs at Woodsworth College. She managed the Summer Abroad Program, the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and Teaching in Higher Education.

In addition to her significant experience, Ali is known for her strong leadership abilities and for implementing new initiatives. “I am thrilled to be at Victoria University!” says Ali. “It is a delight to get to know this group of truly amazing students who clearly have a bright future ahead of them.

There is such a strong sense of community at Vic and I am so impressed with everyone’s deep level of commitment to the success of our students and making their time here a truly transformational experience.”

Ali takes over the position from Susan McDonald who retired in July after 27 years. 

In Memoriam Kenneth Robert Thompson

David Hoeniger, professor emeritus and founding director of the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies, passed away on September 11. Well known for his teaching and academic career by students and faculty alike, he was equally well known by community members who knew Hoeniger for his remarkable love of books. He was known for purchasing books abroad and then selling them from Portrait by David Blostein, professor his office every Wednesday emeritus. Hoeniger was Blostein’s afternoon. He donated all doctoral supervisor. revenue back to the University.

Upon his retirement, he spearheaded the Alumni Book Shop and finally the annual Vic Book Sale.

Hoeniger obtained a BA and MA at Victoria College and U of T. He completed his PhD at the University of London, U.K. His first teaching post was as lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan, followed by a return to Vic in 1948. By 1955 he was promoted to assistant professor of English. A full professor by 1963, he was the first director of the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies in 1964. He was known for his remarkable effort in building up the centre’s research collection with rare books and facsimiles. He was also known for specializing in Renaissance drama.

Hoeniger’s prolific career and support of Vic have been honoured by the Annual F. David Hoeniger Lecture in addition to the F. David Hoeniger Book Collection Prize.

Kenneth Thompson, former registrar, passed away on August 26. Thompson completed a BA in classic studies at Queen’s University.

He then worked for CSIS in Ottawa where he met his wife, Katharine. He then moved to the U.S. to earn a master’s degree at Harvard University.

In 1959 he and his family moved to Toronto where he became a professor—and later registrar—at Victoria University.

“Ken Thompson was registrar while I was a student,” says Angela Esterhammer Vic 8T3, principal of Victoria College, “he was also my Latin professor. Thanks to him, I still have fond memories of parsing Latin sentences when I pass a certain small classroom in Northrop Frye Hall. He was unfailingly kind and supportive, and he took the time to stay in touch with me and other former students after we graduated. We will miss his quiet presence at Victoria College events.”

Thompson was registrar until he retired in 1995. Under his leadership Victoria launched the in-course ‘A’ scholarship guarantee that helped attract and reward high academic achievement. The Board of Regents named an in-course scholarship in his honour for his distinguished service.

Even well into his retirement, Thompson stayed in close contact with the Vic community. He generously supported the University and enthusiastically participated in on-campus events.

GREEN LEGACIE Answering to someone we may never meet

While Victoria College is well known for its graduates’ legacies in diplomacy, literature, and the arts, the success of Vic grads in the green economy is another story that should be shared and celebrated. The following three Victoria College alumni are examples of graduates who have advanced their careers doing meaningful work contributing to sustainability and to helping make Canada and the world a greener place for future generations.

Malcolm Cecil- Cockwell Vic 1T1 When it comes to the local food movement and sustainability, Malcolm Cecil-Cockwell reflects that people who think a lot about their food need to think more about their tables.

“There’s this obsession with local food and 100-mile diets, but it’s not a truly sustainable meal unless the table you’re sitting at was also harvested and made within 100 miles of where you live. Local wood is just as important as local food, particularly if it comes from responsibly managed forests like ours and many others in Ontario.”

The forest to which Cecil-Cockwell is referring is Haliburton Forest, where he has been general manager for the past three years. The company owns 110,000 acres along the southwestern border of Algonquin Park, and it is equipped with its own sawmill and wood-processing facilities, where it manufactures log homes and cabins, wood furniture, canoe paddles, and forest foods such as honey, mushrooms and maple syrup. Such a high degree of integration is unusual for forestry companies, but Cecil-Cockwell notes that integration itself is becoming increasingly common—rather than exporting raw materials, there’s a drive to use them here, to invest in the province, to hire local labour and to make local products that will be consumed locally.

a research partnership with the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Forestry, where he was pursuing his undergraduate degree—he’s currently a PhD candidate. Forestry, which is a regulated profession just like medicine, engineering or architecture, requires an extensive body of knowledge and experience.

“It’s real ‘boots on the ground’ work,” Cecil-Cockwell explains. “Everything from how do you build a road that can sustain log trucks hauling 100,000 tonnes of timber a year, to what kind of buffer should you leave around an osprey’s nest to ensure the species is able to continue, and then where you should put the culvert to protect water quality to ensure that the trout spawning in that lake will be protected. You have to have a deep grasp of everything related to the natural world as well as our use of it and our resources.

“In the forestry sector of Ontario,” Cecil-Cockwell says, “an enormous amount of time is spent trying to figure out how we can keep doing what we’re doing for another 500 years.”

He calls forestry one of the greenest industries in Canada, and describes the opportunity to combine business with direct participation in ecological stewardship and conservation as a natural draw for him.

“The nature of the business is managing a natural system for ongoing benefit. In our forest, we don’t plant trees because we don’t need to. We don’t cut just big trees; we harvest trees from all different age classes, and we typically implement a strategy called stand improvement—cutting trees with diseases and infections first. We create conditions ideal for trees to grow back naturally. It can sound surprising, but the economically optimal methods for managing forests are very close to being environmentally optimal ones.”

Cecil-Cockwell knows that his job comes with big implications. “At the end of the day, a forester has to answer to somebody they’re never going to meet,” he admits. “The decisions that I make as a professional forester today, whether I’m right or wrong, are a call that’s going to affect somebody 150 years from now. It’s a huge responsibility.”

Elena Jusenlijska Vic 0T8 While plenty of graduates enter the workforce with the intention of making a difference, Elena Jusenlijska knew that success would require more than lofty ideals. Her degree in environmental policy and practice had prepared her for this with the program’s practical approach and focus on real-world experience. As a program requirement, Jusenlijska interned with an environmental charity and spent a month working on an organic chocolate farm in Costa Rica, helping to develop projects to boost sustainability.

After graduation, she enrolled in an MBA introductory program at U of T’s Rotman School of Management, a crash course in business. She knew that she wanted to put to use what she had learned in university; however, she credits the influence of her entrepreneur

“ You are the owner of your own energy, and you are participating in bringing renewable power into the grand scheme of things.” parents for making her realize she needed to acquire some fundamentals to put all the pieces together.

The desire to do things that mattered, however, never went away.

“I have been successful at doing things I’m proud of,” she says. “Every role I’ve taken on is about making things better.”

Key to Jusenlijska’s success has been a talent for creating relationships, a skill she credits to her undergraduate years and her involvement in Vic’s commuter community. “I learned that you can’t do things alone,” she explains. “You can study alone but you get better when working with individuals and groups, and that was a big lesson for me.”

It is a lesson that has served Jusenlijska throughout her career.

Building partnerships and nurturing relationships is a big part of her position as manager of corporate engagement for ACCES Employment, an organization

helping newcomers to Canada find meaningful employment, and it was also the way that she was able to help build Better Current, a company delivering solar energy technology on a personal level.

Better Current has two components, the first being JENNi, described as “the world’s first smart solar charger,” currently under development. “This has been our vision all along,” she says, “to bring this technology to the everyday user, and in a meaningful way. You are the owner of your own energy, and you are participating in bringing renewable power into the grand scheme of things.”

The other side of Better Current includes the solar charging stations which the company rents out for events such as festivals and concerts. “When people plug in their phones, we’re meeting their needs,” Jusenlijska says.

“And then they realize it’s batteries charged by solar power. Everyone has heard about Tesla Motors, but most of us can’t afford to buy its vehicles. To use that concept and vision on solar, battery and renewable energy and put it at our fingertips is very powerful.”

The biggest challenge, she says, in engaging people about the importance of renewable energy is affordability and accessibility.

“If you want solar, you have to install it on the roof of your house; if you don’t have a roof and you don’t have a house, how do you play with that? And even if you do have a house, there are still barriers. Removing these barriers is what we hope to achieve with JENNi. As technology improves, traditional electricity costs continue to rise and we experience more power outages, people will start to shift more towards owning their own little bit of energy and being their own boss of their energy piece.”

She acknowledges that Better Current and JENNi are only pieces of a much larger puzzle, but insists that this doesn’t undermine her faith in the importance and impact of the business.

“We can play a part in evolving the technology and getting people participating and engaging in renewable energy,” she explains. “There is no one solution—there are many solutions— and that’s the beauty of it.” vic report autumn 2016

John Riley Vic 7T3 “I was blessed that Victoria gave me a tuition scholarship, which I really needed, and the freedom to explore,” says John Riley when asked about his undergraduate years. Having already left another university after only three weeks, he arrived at Victoria College after a year spent working and another year travelling across Europe, the Middle East and North America. A selfdescribed independently minded product of the ’60s, on campus his explorations would continue. He recalls auditing courses by Northrop Frye Vic 3T3, Emm 3T6 and Marshall McLuhan, then gravitating toward fine arts courses, and finally majoring in East Asian Studies.

“These were not the most relevant subjects from the point of view of gestating an effective, efficient student to contribute to the Canadian economy,” Riley admits. “And yet people with a varied background, like mine, went on to do all kinds of things.

These undergraduate experiences have been the foundations of research, inquiry, and freedom of thought.”

He also took courses in botany, zoology and worked professionally as an ecologist during his summers, which would lead to a job after graduation as the Royal Ontario Museum’s first botanist, and he would spend eight years caring for its plant collections.

Subsequent adventures included geological surveying, helicopter-based explorations of Northern Ontario and work with Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources. Moving to the private sector, Riley worked for the Ontario Naturalists, helping to add six million acres of parkland in Ontario and to negotiate conservation agreements for the Oak Ridges Moraine. And then he took a national role with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), working on land conservation and the conservation of biological and geological diversity.

“In the same way that Vic is building an educational legacy, I’ve been involved in building a nature legacy across the country, which is hugely rewarding.”

Country, published by McGill-Queen’s University Press in 2013, a history of environmental change in the Great Lakes region. It’s a book, explains Riley, about land as the abiding soul of a place. “It’s about the character of the land and what trauma we, as Europeans, have inflicted upon it.”

When it’s suggested that the Great Lakes region is one of the more unremarkable in Canada, when compared to vast prairies, striking coastlines and the sublime Rocky Mountains, Riley offers a correction: “I would use the term ‘taken for granted.’ This was in many respects the home landscape for Canada. If you’ve ever spent any time on Lake Superior, the Georgian Bay coastline, Bruce Peninsula, Manitoulin Island, St. Lawrence River, Thousand Islands— places that are to die for—you would understand the importance of these ecological wonders. Which region of Canada has the highest rate of newcomers arriving? People are not uninformed when it comes to looking around globally and choosing where to live, invest their lives and their legacy.”

That influx of newcomers is going to come at an ecological cost though, and Riley doubts it can be sustainable at present rates. “Arguably we behave like an unaware and invasive species when it comes to this landscape,” he says, “but we can be educated.”

While he regrets the decline in outdoor education investment for younger students, he lauds a huge interest by youth in college and university environmental studies programs, and also efforts to restore natural habitats in Canada, to show people what this landscape used to be.

Restoration efforts are the good news story of Riley’s book, and also of his work with the NCC. “By 1910, we had stripped this place of its natural native habitats,” he says. “We had removed 94 per cent of the upland forests in Southern Ontario—put under the plow. We’d converted 70 per cent of wetlands. There are photos of lands that were bared, the soils blowing away downwind.” The story since then, he says, has been “a fantastic journey of recovery and restoration in the Great Lakes country.” Water is cleaner and more abundant, woodlands have recovered, wildlife has rebounded.

In order for this legacy to be lasting though, Riley explains there needs to be a combination of legal and regulatory changes similar to those that began in the 1960s with the creation of the Ministry of the Environment. And he points to conservation triumphs by the Nature Conservancy of Canada in the Great Lakes Region and elsewhere, including Lancaster Sound on the north end of Baffin Island.

“I kind of live for these great stories from across the country,” Riley says, “what I would call destination natural areas that are being built—as we speak—largely by private sector and volunteer efforts. It’s a new frontier, and it’s a very positive legacy.” 

Careers, Authors, Honours Pierre Atlas Vic 8T4 has been made a full professor of political science at Marian University in Indianapolis where he directs the Richard G. Lugar Franciscan Center for Global Studies. He has also been named the Canadian Studies section coordinator for the Western Social Science Association. A comparative political scientist who specializes in Middle East politics, Atlas is now researching and writing on the political legacy of the North American frontier. His article comparing American and Canadian Indian policy in the 19th century will be published in the next issue of American Review of Canadian Studies.

The Spirit of Service: Arbor Award Winners Celebrated United by volunteerism, Vic celebrated alongside U of T at this year’s Arbor Awards event on September 15. Nominations are made at all levels of the greater U of T community, including departments, faculties, and colleges, to honour outstanding volunteers. Award winners and their guests were invited to a garden party at U of T’s presidential residence.

Steve Paikin, O.C., O.Ont., Vic 8T1 has published a book Bill Davis Nation Builder, and Not So Bland After All (Dundurn Press, 2016). The book is the first authorized biography of the 18th premier of Ontario, Bill Davis, P.C., C.C., O.Ont., Q.C.

John Reibetanz, poet, literary critic and English professor, has retired. Reibetanz joined Vic in 1968 after earning a PhD in English Language and Literature from Princeton University.

He was awarded the first Victoria University Teaching Award in 1990 for his excellence in teaching and course preparation.

Carol Sheardown Vic 8T7 and fellow U of T grad Linda Chow Kordze are co-founders and directors of Dekpor School Development Organisation (DSDO). The charity raises funds to build a school, as well as for other educational, health and sanitation projects in rural Dekpor, Ghana.

Mary Pierce Vic 8T1 has received a Leadership Excellence award from Colleges and Institutes Canada for her work as chair of the Lawrence Kinlin School of Business at Fanshawe College.

The awards showcase extraordinary contributions of individuals and programs to their institution’s success and highlight the role colleges play in social, economic and cultural development. Since Pierce took over the school she has more than doubled enrollment, established new diploma and degree programs, and spearheaded transfer agreements between colleges and universities.

Sherwood is a volunteer minister with Faith and Arts Ottawa, and First United Church, and continues to teach and supervise graduate students at Carleton University in Ottawa. Jeff Sprang Vic 7T7 held an exhibition of works in Toronto at the Onyx Building this September: “Cohen, Drake, Downie & Frye—This is not a law firm” was a solo exhibition of portraits by the artist featuring Canadian icons in the music, sports and entertainment fields. New work included portraits of musicians Drake, Gord Downie, Leonard Cohen, Buffy Sainte-Marie and television personality Traci Melchor. All proceeds from this exhibition supported the literacy development charity One World Schoolhouse Foundation.

Sheelagh Whittaker Vic 7T0 has published her second book and first novel, Evaline: A Feminist’s Tale (Departure Bay, 2016). The story chronicles the impact of the 1960s women’s liberation movement on the life of Evaline Sadlier. Sadlier juggles career, family, id, ego and tragedy with the belief that a woman can have what she wants and that it is all a matter of choice, not compromise.

This past August, Philip Ziegler Vic 9T1, Emm 9T6, 0T2 was promoted to a personal chair at the University of Aberdeen as professor of Christian dogmatics. He has been awarded the Alan Richardson Fellowship at the University of Durham for its 2017 Epiphany term and has been made a senior fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy.

In addition, he has edited Eternal God, Eternal Life: Theological Investigations into the Concept of Immortality (T&T Clark/ Bloomsbury, 2016). He has also co-edited Christ, Church and World: New Studies in Bonhoeffer’s Theology and Ethics (T&T Clark/Bloomsbury, 2016).

China-Watching Redux by victor falkenheim For students in my Vic One course, Events in the Public Sphere: Equality, Democracy and Development, few subjects tend to ignite more heated debate or stimulate greater interest than the implications of China’s meteoric rise over the past decades. Yet, what has engaged them has not been the geo-political consequences of China’s increasingly formidable economic and military power, nor has it been the fraught subject of China’s human rights record. Rather, what has been most compelling for students has been the dramatic success of China’s market authoritarian system in delivering rapid economic development and stable and effective government. Set against the clear developmental failures of democratic governance in much of the developing world, the Chinese ‘model’ seems to exemplify the virtues and strengths of authoritarian alternatives.

To this Cold War vintage China-watcher, the shift in perception has been astonishing. When I began the study of China as an undergraduate in the late 1950s, China was in the midst of traumatic social and political changes. Demonized in western media accounts and patently devastated by the turmoil of the Great Leap era famine and the Cultural Revolution, China was seen as the quintessential rogue nation, the North Korea of yesteryear.

When I did my graduate field research in Taiwan and Hong Kong in the late 1960s, China was closed to outsiders, and my research was confined to interviewing refugees. Ironically, in the polarized era of Vietnam war protests, Mao and China came to be idealized by students in the west as heroic avatars in the struggle against capitalism. Consequently, when I first came to Toronto from the U.S. to teach about China in the early

1970s, students angrily walked out of my classes denouncing me for besmirching the revolution and its legendary leader.

It was an unexpected introduction to the Canadian classroom.

It was my good fortune that I arrived in Canada not long after the re-establishment of Canada-China relations. I was thus able to travel there in the waning years of the Mao era, and link the stories that émigrés had told me to the quotidian reality of China’s pre-reform cities and villages. It was a privilege to be a witness to China’s dizzying transformation in the years since Mao’s death. It has been an added bonus to have had the opportunity to be involved in a number of Canadian aid projects in China from the mid-1980s onwards, and thus to gain a clearer understanding of China’s 12

extraordinary struggle to transform and modernize its economy and society. Canada’s contribution in assisting with that process has been notable and admirable.

Over the generations, students have flocked to the study of China, partly inspired by its revolutionary history, partly out of attraction to its exoticism, and partly to gain a career edge through knowledge of the world’s most rapidly growing economy. But, the focus of today’s Vic One students points to the mounting appeal of a governance model that reflects broad disenchantment with democratic nostrums. Much of my own research in recent years has focused on China’s institutional and policy reforms.

Most recently, supported by The David and Ann Wilson Professorship in Public Policy and Society, I have begun a study of welfare reform, focusing on health care, old-age care, migration and poverty reduction. My goal is to better understand the processes of innovation that translate into policy reform at the provincial and national level. I am working with a number of students from Vic One who are doing independent study projects on aspects of these reforms. Our goal is to understand how progressive change might take place in non-democratic systems and what the limits of those changes might be. Exploring the implications of this research with successive Vic One classes should keep this project grounded and lively. Building and Preserving for Generations to Come by louise (huntingford) yearwood vic 8t6, executive director of alumni affairs and advancement On behalf of Victoria University I would like to thank our donors for another year of generous and thoughtful support.

Donations of named scholarships, bequests, bursaries and support for Vic’s Annual Fund allow the University’s programs to remain intellectually innovative, and our beautiful campus to be maintained and enhanced. Over the last 10 years, Vic has spent $2 million per year on capital improvements. As an example of this ongoing investment, Old Vic has been restored—one side at a time—over the course of the past four years. In the spirit of sustainability, original stones are being re-used wherever possible to reduce cost and waste. From windows to stairs, structural and historical integrity is being preserved, in addition to improving energy efficiency. Other campus efficiencies are being sought with the implementation of lighting retrofit projects. Over the past year six such projects occurred which included replacing fixtures and putting in LED light bulbs. Vic has been working with a City of Toronto rebate program that allows Vic to re-invest in more light projects once the rebate has been received. Changing to long-lasting LEDs not only saves the University money, but also provides improved efficiency, which helps the environment and reduces the amount of waste our halogen bulbs were creating. These are just two examples of your donations at work. You will find other such examples within this report.

Keeping the Strand Green From the outside, it might look like the ivy-covered windows in the Goldring Student Centre are decorative, but these woody plants do so much more than enhance the building’s colour palette. Keen eyes will notice that stainless steel cables extend from the planting beds up to roof overhangs. The creeping vines then grow to create natural privacy as well as shade to mitigate heat gain, particularly in the hot summer months. Incorporating shade from landscaping elements has the added effect of improved energy and performance for the building as a whole. From an architectural perspective, using plants as living air conditioners also softens the otherwise hard edges of this stone and glass structure making this stateof-the-art building seem at home on Vic’s historic campus.

PLATES FROM Blake’s Songs of Innocence Acquired by Victoria University Library Through the support of the Friends of Victoria University Library and an anonymous donor, five plates from William Blake’s Songs of Innocence have been acquired. The extraordinary plates will be on exhibit in the E.J. Pratt Library Reading Room as of November and until the library closes in December.

Other recent acquisitions from the Bentley/Blake Collection will be on display to celebrate the 10-plus years since the collection was acquired from Professor Gerald Bentley. These plates, the jewel in the crown to the Bentley collection, include the title page on which appears the attribution “The Author & Printer W Blake,” “The Blossom,” “A Cradle Song,” and “A Dream.” They represent the earliest extant printing of any illuminated book and the first printing and issue of one of the most renowned books in English poetry.

Stairway to Reading Heaven A new day has dawned for the E.J. Pratt Library’s front steps, just in time for the fall semester. The entire staircase was removed this past spring. Decades of salt and water damage had taken a toll on the original stairs.

All of the rust was removed and the steel stairs were re-finished, re-galvanized and put back into place. A waterproof membrane was added to protect the steel for years more of wet springs and harsh Canadian winters.

Unfortunately the landing plate had to be completely re-done and was not salvageable. A new, non-slip stone was installed that matches the exterior of the building.

The improved landing surface will reduce the risk of falls during inclement weather.

Victoria: The Queen of Green

Victoria’s campus is often described as an oasis in the heart of a bustling city. Not only does it provide refuge from the din of city traffic, and shade to locals in the blistering heat, but its gardens stand out as a pollinator’s paradise. While many Torontonians take vacation in the summer, butterflies, birds and bees shift into overdrive as they transfer pollen grains from bloom to flowering bloom. Recognizing the importance of this process, Victoria has made a concerted effort to plant bee-, butterfly-, and bird-friendly perennials including bee balm, echinacea, salvia, black-eyed Susans, sage and various ornamental grasses. Indigenous plants are better suited to the local climate, require less fertilizer and are often found to be more disease and pest resistant. These colourful perennials are better economically, too, keeping more green in Victoria’s pocket.

Heritage Donor Spotlight Victoria University will establish the Dorothy I.M. Black Scholarship, an in-course scholarship for students achieving excellence in the course of their studies. Dorothy Black Vic 3T5 was a Heritage Donor who spent her entire life dedicated to learning. Considered a strict but fair teacher, Black was awarded the Dorothy Black on her 99th birthday inaugural Smeaton-Muir Award in 1979 in recognition of her contributions to the teaching profession in Ottawa. Her cousin, David Templin, describes her as someone who loved people but treasured her independence. “She never married and lived on her own until the very end,” says Templin, “but she was not a lonely or unhappy person. She never stopped reading or learning. She never lost her curiosity. She was always asking questions and was always interested in the answers. I think she would say, ‘being interested is a higher virtue than being interesting.’”

Black was a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women for over 50 years. She was also an avid photographer and traveller. Black travelled around the world twice and visited every one of its continents.

She passed away two weeks short of her 101st birthday. One of her former students remarked upon her passing that “teachers came and went but Miss Black remains in my heart forever.”

“ Oh, My Parents Sent Me to Victoria” Joan (Foster) Mactavish chose to go to Victoria College on the advice of her mother’s Sunday school teacher, Margaret Addison. After the Second World War, she married her classmate, Ian Mactavish Vic 4T2, and they had three children, Heather (Mactavish) Giroux Vic 6T9, Bonnie Vic 7T5 and Bruce Vic 7T8, all of whom went to Vic after completing grade 13.

Joan’s continuing involvement with the Alumni Office, the Senate and the Board of Regents over many years made her family aware of Vic as a happy, stimulating place to be, long before they graduated from high school. When Joan asked her granddaughter why she chose Vic, Tara replied, “I knew what a happy experience it had been for you and Dad. After my third year abroad at the University of Glasgow, I appreciated even more the tradition Vic represents of history and stability in the centre of a growing city of skyscrapers and traffic.”
