Every year RICE takes an active part in developing projects and relief work all over the world. We make it our mission to do business with a heart. Social responsibility is a part of the RICE DNA – we believe in a better world and we aspire to make a difference.

We put a lot of pride into our work and our products, and it is important to us that we engage in long-lasting and reliable supplier cooperations and that we only use the very best materials available. At RICE we offer a wide range of materials – but raffia and melamine have been with us from the very beginning. Raffia is a beautiful and natural product; it comes from palm fronds and our products are handmade in Madagascar. The quality of RICE melamine is the highest available and contains no BPA or phthalates.

RICE was founded back in 1998 by Charlotte and Philippe Guéniau and today RICE is represented in more than 50 countries with approx. 2000 stores worldwide. In 2014 we added RICETERIA to the family. The combined store and café which can now be found all over the globe combining vibrant RICE products with healthy, fresh, and colorful food.

Welcome to Flower Me Happy - our spring summer 23 collection

2023 is the Year where we celebrate 25 years of RICE… 1998 was a big year for me and my husband. We had our first baby - and then within the very same year we gave birth to RICE... We moved to Denmark after 14 years in France. A truly epic time!

This year we will celebrate throughout the entire year - a year of appreciation to the adventure it has truly been, to all the beautiful people who have been on the journey with us, they have all contributed to making RICE what it is today.

I have a big crush on flowers so we have dedicated a large part of the collection to them. Flowers on prints, embroideries and even a Flower Me Happy book. Least but not least we will have flower seeds so you can grow your own beauties.

I feel a special warm feeling of joy in my heart when I am surrounded by flowers, in nature or working with small bouquets in my home. Flower Me Happy… it’s a thing.

The idea of starting RICE was founded over a long lunch in the middle of the french countryside - in 1997. I had lived on an off in Paris for 14 years - my french husband Philippe and I both had really great jobs but we travelled most of the time and often in opposite directions.

We wanted a change of pace and we had a baby on the way. That became the catalyst to creating a big change. We wanted to create a life where we travelled together instead of apart and we longed for a quieter lifestyle. 3 weeks after our son was born, we moved to Denmark and into our small summerhouse near the sea. Our French friends and family were so worried about us, they all thought we were completely crazy!

A quarter of a century - filled with adventure

After a few months - we created the company and when our son Max was 4 months old we went to Madagascar searching for products to fit together with items from a Danish friend in Thailand. We went there looking for embroidered things and discovered the wonderful material RAFFIA. Since that day we have never stopped producing in Madagascar and are proud to still work with the same people after 25 years.

We put together a small selection of items and roamed the shops of Copenhagen with Max in a pram. Everybody wanted the baskets we brought back and we got a flying start. The small barn in our summerhouse quickly became too small - and we moved to bigger premises with more storage space.

After 1 year - and a second baby on the way we had stock all over the house, and nowhere really to live... so we moved the company out. Looking back now, it was a crazy time but also super fun and full of adventure.

In 2001 we started selling melamine products, and this amazing material has been an enormous part of our collection ever since.

First handmade catalogueand first fair stand

Today we sell to more than 40 countries and we have a really nice office and warehouse on the harbour in Odense.

We always cared about people and places where we produced and in 2002 we became SA8000 certified. We like to do business with our hearts and have over the years had some great projects together with Danish Refugee council, Danish Red Cross and Unicef.

We are proud product makers and love that we keep many women and their families in Madagascar busy producing baskets and bags for us.

Since 2001 RICE has financed CSR projects every year - this list is just a few of them:

This year we have invested in a piece of farmland where we will plant around 75.000 trees - we call the project RICE happy earth.

Some countries in Europe are lucky to have fields of flowers where you can go and pick your own flowers. You pay at the “honesty bar” - according to how many stems you have chosen. I get into a special state of high on life when I am in these fields.

Bake someone HAPPY

Clafouti

My french fabulous friend of an easy cake. You can whip this easy cake up while you are chatting with your friends and having a drink. If you are very lucky there will be a piece left over - it tastes great the following day as well...

• 600 g raspberries

(the classic version is with cherries but you can choose your favorite berry)

• 40 g butter + 20 g to grease the baking dish

• 100 g wheat flower

• 60 g sugar

• 1 pinch of salt

• 1 vanilla pod or one tablespoon vanilla sugar

• 4 eggs

• 2 dl full fat milk

• Castor sugar for decoration

1. Preheat the oven to 210 °C, rinse the berries carefully. Melt the butter slowly.

2. Mix flour, sugar, salt and vanilla in a bowl. Beat the eggs and mix it in with the milk. At the end add the melted butter.

3. Grease a lovely oven dish with the remaining 20 g of butter. Pour in the batter, and place the raspberries all over the dish.

4. Bake for 10 minutes at 210 °C and reduce the heat to 180 °C for another 20 minutes.

Can be served luke warm or cold. Just so yummy!

The book is a labour of love - made as a collaboration between Charlotte Hedeman Guéniau and the very talented photographer and flower expert Mette Krull. Together they share a huge love for flowersand always send each other florally inspired pictures and quotes.
