This project attempts to link nutrition to one’s body and soul and creating an oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

Brief

The studio confronted each of our personal opinions on climate change and its interrelation with vernacular and sustainability and further continued to study the ways where these ideas translated into a built form.

The challenge on the site, which is a part of Ramzan Food Festival ground was, to bring back the sustainable way of life but also suiting the contemporary context.

Proposal

The design targets the underprivileged people in an urban context such as construction laborers, truck, and taxi drivers, etc to provide them with the required nutrition at affordable rates and also integrates awareness about sustainable living through one of the basic commodities - Moderate food.

The proposal is to establish a sustainable program where the produce (Garden), preparation (Community Kitchen), and waste management (Compost) is done within the site and thus addressing the climate change through Vernacularism.

Through an intense exercise of making figure grounds based on site and program forces, the most reliable ones were taken ahead, which gave the complexity needed among voids and solids through an irregular grid and the potential of having dual access to the design.

The main activity (Community Kitchen) is organized with its auxiliary activities by staggering the blocks in both horizontal and vertical axes to create the complexity among spaces as guided by the figure-ground diagram.

Voids as a Relief Built placed around a void blurs the internal boundaries and thus creating a free flow of movement. When many more such units intervene with each other, a balance gets established among the built and nature, which is the fundamental aspect of vernacularism.

School of Applied arts and Design Rhythmic placement of nodes as reference points is important when circulation becomes the major challenge in large institutions.

Taking this as the starting point the school was designed to combine the 3 major attributes that define Mysore.

Mysore has been ruled by several kings for over 500 years due to which there is diversity in the cultural setting with Mysore silk saree and chennapatna toys, heritage the precinct with the influence of Mughal and British styles and rich biodiversity with rare species of flora and fauna.

The Mysore university was founded during the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore.

Brief

The School of Design, an applied arts school, aspires to engage with traditional arts and crafts and give them a contemporary dimension. This not only keeps a tradition alive but also helps to reach the new age population and engage with it, giving the crafts a new life.

The School of Design will offer a four-year undergraduate program in three departments namely, Product design, Textile Design, and Visual Communication and Strategic Branding, under Mysore University. The annual Intake for each department will be 40 students.

CONCEPT Larger Idea The consonance of voids among the built such as to emphasize the three attributes in the site with the help of the program where, - ecology forms the boundary of the program.

Each department has its own privacy but also has a common platform where the public is allowed. This way the campus itself becomes a veil showing the culture of Mysore being taught not only to the students but also to the public, as shown in the diagrammatic section.

IDEAS TAKEN FROM SITE The silent areas where the biodiversity is at the peak are bleeding into the site as shown in the figure and thus guiding the main axis of the school in the site.

Brief

The studio intended to have placemaking and form exploration as the architectural goal by analyzing the need, function, activity, and context.

The Design was explored in the meaning of the built environment through physical and cultural contexts by layering the abstract understandings of Akira Kurosawa’s ‘Dreams’.

Starting from a thorough study of forms and their meaning through sketches and models which helped the design to achieve an experiential quality and blending with the various timelines the site has gone through involving Tipu Sulthan’s Summer Palace, Bangalore Fort, its extents, Kote Venkataramana Temple, and the new metro line, the idea was to take the essence of all these timelines and design an addition to the context by passing on the culture to its future.

CONCEPT The design revolves around the word ‘Perform’: to create a space for performance/ junctions by scooping out volumes in the given site as an idea and placing an attractor as a marker for the start of a journey.

The journey contains multiple viewpoints through slits and height variations which hides or reveals only certain portions of the backdrop causing the eagerness to find the missing pieces and arranging them through memory, lending a sense of adventure and discovery.
