T EA C H E R S A Reflection of Faith and Generosity...

New Church Dedicated Anointing the Altar makes it a symbol of Christ, "The Anointed One." Anointing the walls signifies that the building is dedicated entirely to Christian worship.

B ishop Daniel F. Walsh, Bishop of Las Vegas, formally dedicated the new St. Viator Church on Sunday, October 22nd. The solemn ceremonies unfolded the day after the Feast of St. Viator, patron saint of the parish, and of the Viatorians. Hundreds of parishioners joined a large Viatorian contingent in the dedication liturgy, including many former pastors and associates . Calling the church building a beautiful reflection of the faith and generosity of the

people and priests of St. Viator's, Bishop Walsh began the liturgy as Celebrant by accepting the building from representatives of those involved in its construction. The Sprinkling Rite reminded all present that for Christians, water has always been a sign of cleansing and new life, and to reflect on the new life to which we are called in Christ. The Anointing of the Altar and Walls followed the Profession of Faith and the Litany of Saints. Since the first Pentecost, oil has been a sign of the Holy Spirit.

Incense is burned at the Altar to signify the sacrifice of Christ. The congregation was incensed because they are the living temple of Christ. Members of the Parish Council prepared the altar. The newlyanointed altar was prepared as a table for

banquet and adorned for a feast - the feast which is the celebration of the Eucharist. Continued on page 4

New Church Dedicated (continued)

The dedication closed with Lighting the Altar and Church, which are lit to remind us that Christ is the Light of the World, a light to guide all people and nations. The liturgy continued through the final blessing with Viatorian Concelebrants Rev. Robert M. Egan, Provincial Superior; Fr. Thomas Langenfeld, Pastor, and Frs . Wayne Dupuis and George Auger, Associates .

In comments at the reception in the outdoor plaza, Bishop Walsh noted that the beautiful new church building "will announce to all who pass by for generations our belief in the presence of God in our midst." Fr. Langen£eld also thanked and congratulated all who helped make the new church and dedication a reality. He asked for "a dedication to another building project - the

furthering of our Gospel mission to bring the Good News to all, especially those counted of little importance in our world ." Hand painted artwork in the crypt chapel was beautifully rendered by Las Vegas artist Gregory Barnaby, a graduate of Viatorianadministered Bishop Gorman High School. Viatorians have served the Diocese of Las Vegas since 1954, when Bishop Robert Dwyer invited them. to administer the only Catholic High School in southern Nevada, and established them at St. Viator parish. Over the past 42 years, 37 Viatorians have served the parish as Pastors or as Associates in building up the church in the Las Vegas area. ■

AIDS Memorial Quilt (continued) AIDS awareness addressed a v ariety of questions. What is AIDS?, What is it like to live with the AIDS virus?, How should I treat someone who has AIDS? and What does the Church say about people with AIDS? In their document, the Bishops wrote: "Persons with AIDS are not distant, unfamiliar people, the objects of our mingled pity and aversion. We must keep them present in our consciousness, as individuals and a community, and embrace them with unconditional love."

Las Vegas Bishop Daniel Walsh presided at the ground-breaking ceremony for the new St. Thomas More Church "in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, NV last fall . He was assisted by St. Thomas More pastor Dan Nolan, C.S. V (right) and associate pastor Ken Morris, C.S. V (left). The current seven yea.' old parish center/church has experienced overflow capacity for some. time, and a building fimd campaign was very successful. Th e greater Las Vegas area was recently designated. as the nation 's fastest growing home construction market.
