Zealand has made considerable progress with the uptake of e-mobility particularly in the light fleet. We’ve seen that the Clean Car Programme has really contributed to this progress. It’s a policy that has driven down the price for New Zealanders and attracted greater supply to Aotearoa New Zealand. In time it will start to populate the second-hand fleet, making EVs accessible to more New Zealanders. However, the report shows there is still so much more to do. Despite the progress, EVs remain at around 2 per cent of the light fleet. Now is the time to double down, and strive for more than 2 million EVs on our roads by the mid-2030s. There is so much benefit to be gained, such as cheaper fuel prices for households, fewer emissions, less air pollution, and less reliance on foreign oil.”
Decarbonising our transport system will be crucial in meeting our climate obligations. A myriad of other advantages also come with the transition to electric vehicles.
the coming decades. While it’s important to have the right settings in place to enable those sectors to progress, the shorter-term wins for Aotearoa New Zealand are to be had with road transport. The main challenge that sits across electrification of transport is charging. Charging readiness can make or break a successful transition to electric vehicles, and is an area in which Aotearoa New Zealand has some catching up to do. While the majority of electric vehicle charging is done at home, our public network needs to become more robust and more fit-forpurpose, especially as more commercial electric vehicles (both light and heavy) enter the fleet. When it comes to home charging, widespread adoption of smart chargers will be key to managing demand in future.

Auto Channel is the best way to reach the wider automotive industry. The publication is direct mailed to over 10,000 New Zealand businesses in the following automotive sectors: Automotive workshops, parts importers and distributors, transmission specialists, automotive recyclers, towing operators, panel beaters and painters, crash repairers, tyre dealers, suspension and underbody repairers, steering specialists, towing operators, auto-electrical repairers, newand used-car dealers, air-conditioning repairers, heavy-machinery dealers, trucking and transport.
Transport accounts for 18 per cent of our nation’s emissions, but the solution exists to decarbonise — mainly through electrification. While EVs produce lower life-cycle emissions regardless of where in the world they are driven, Aotearoa New Zealand’s high proportion of renewable electricity grid maximises their emissions-reduction potential. An electrified transport system also reduces the country’s exposure to the price of fossil fuels, will reduce household spending on transport and energy, and reduce health impacts of air pollution.
While e-mobility is fast becoming dominant, we must be alert to technological advancements and how these will provide new opportunities. Marine, aviation, and heavy transport may all lend themselves to technologies like hydrogen or cleaner forms of fuel. The nature of Aotearoa New Zealand’s vehicle market amplifies the urgency to transition to electric sooner rather than later.
This transition to e-mobility is about more than cars. Drive Electric is an advocate for electrification of the transport sector as a whole because realising the benefits of decarbonising transport will require more than simply swapping all the cars in Aotearoa New Zealand for EVs.
New Zealanders have a propensity for short car trips. A better transport sector would also see increased uptake of electric micro-mobility, ride-sharing, and mobility-as-a-service models along with a lower-emission, more efficient public transport system.
Low availability and high costs of suitable light or heavy commercial transport options are hindering electric vehicle uptake in those segments. Our utes, vans, and trucks tend to be higher-emitting, and driven much more regularly, so addressing adoption barriers for these vehicles will be crucial in the coming years.
Besides our road vehicles, electric marine transport and aviation technologies are still in their infancy, but have shown great promise for
Aotearoa New Zealand’s energy sector is already well-positioned to accommodate the expected 20 per cent increase in electricity demand from light electric vehicle uptake. Our electricity generators, distributors, and retailers, along with our public charge point operators and home charging installers, all need to work to ensure that our nationwide charging infrastructure can act as an enabler of, rather than a barrier to accelerated EV adoption.
Policy settings around EV uptake in Aotearoa New Zealand have shifted rapidly over the past four months. The clean car discount (CCD) has been removed, and EVs are no longer exempt from road user charges (RUCs). The Government has stated they are not considering alternative incentives at this time, given their fiscal position.
However, strong EV uptake is essential for Aotearoa New Zealand’s future. The Government has committed to reducing emissions by 2030, as one of their nine Government Targets and will be consulting on the second emissions reduction plan (ERP2) in the middle of 2024.
To prepare for engaging in the ERP2 consultation and beyond, Drive Electric is working on a range of policy ideas that will actively support EV uptake and also meet the Government’s current settings.
Drive Electric has also formed a Charge Point Operators (CPO) subgroup to tackle the barriers to investment in public charging. This group focuses on network connections (prices and processes) and government investment.
Through the implementation of smart policies, collaboration between key stakeholders, and innovative solutions, Aotearoa New Zealand has the opportunity to lead the charge towards a cleaner, more sustainable transportation system. Electric transport will transform how we move around our country, and it’s up to our consumers, businesses, and policy makers to affect the kind of change that sets Aotearoa New Zealand up for success.
The time for action is now, and the potential rewards for our people, environment, and our economy are immense. If you, or your business, are committed to supporting the uptake of e-mobility in Aotearoa New Zealand, Drive Electric would love to welcome you to their rapidly growing community. NGK SPARK PLUGS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR MORE THAN 80 YEARS. MOST PEOPLE IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY HAVE COME ACROSS THEIR SPARK PLUGS AND
COULD TELL YOU ABOUT THEIR JAPANESE HERITAGE OR PREMIUM QUALITY, BUT COULD THEY TELL YOU WHAT MAKES NGK DIFFERENT?
Engine manufacturers spend many years researching and developing new engine designs. During this complex process, every engine component, including the spark plug, is engineered and tailored to match the application perfectly.
As the world’s largest OE spark plug supplier, NGK works hand-in-hand with vehicle manufacturers during the development of each new engine configuration to engineer spark plugs specifically designed to suit each engine’s requirements and ensure optimum performance.
When spark plugs are commonised, important attributes are often compromised, which can significantly affect performance and longevity. These attributes include heat range, centre electrode projection length, number of ground electrodes, and ground electrode designs (including Double Fine Electrode (DFE) and Platinum Square Projection Electrode (PSPE) designs).
NGK prides itself on providing the broadest range of replacement spark plugs designed and engineered for most vehicles on New Zealand roads.
NGK and NTK products are designed and manufactured in the same factories as the products they supply to OE customers across Japan, Europe, North America, Korea, Thailand, China, and other regions involved in vehicle manufacturing. NGK remains the manufacturer of choice for vehicle manufacturers worldwide.
Furthermore, NGK products are manufactured with the highest quality in design, raw materials, and processes. They are driven by quality and deliver the best levels of range, supply, and service and are very proud of their products’ performance.

platinum have much higher melting points than traditional metals such as nickel, which allows centre electrode diameters to reduce from 2.5mm using nickel to 0.6mm using iridium or platinum. The finer point means that once a spark forms, the flame kernel does not have a large mass of the centre electrode, which reduces the absorption of heat and reduces the flame shadow, impeding the flame progress.
This equates to a more complete burn that translates to:
• Improved acceleration
• Smoother idling

ENERGY MINISTER SIMEON BROWN HAS ANNOUNCED 25 NEW HIGH-SPEED EV CHARGING HUBS ALONG KEY ROUTES BETWEEN MAJOR URBAN CENTRES AND OUTLINED THE GOVERNMENT’S PLAN TO SUPERCHARGE NEW ZEALAND’S EV INFRASTRUCTURE
The hubs will each have several chargers and be capable of charging at least four — and up to 10 — vehicles at once, as well as being located close to amenities.
“New Zealanders considering an EV need confidence they can charge where and when they need on the public network. The Government is committed to working with industry to supercharge public EV infrastructure to remove ‘range anxiety’ and make owning an EV as easy as possible,” Mr Brown says.
“Our Government has a plan to significantly increase the number of public EV chargers across New Zealand with a goal of 10,000 charging points by 2030. This is part of our ambitious target to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions, aligned with our Net Zero 2050 goal.”
In order to deliver this plan, Cabinet has agreed to develop a new model to support
investment in EV charging infrastructure in New Zealand. The new model is part of a Supercharging EV infrastructure work programme agreed by Cabinet that includes: Development of a cost-benefit framework for Government co-investment in public EV chargers, consistent with the National Act Coalition Agreement, and transitioning the co-investment model to maximise private investment. Decisions on the model will be confirmed late 2024.

PROACTIVE BATTERY TESTING USING A HANDHELD TESTER LIKE THE DHC BT521A FROM CENTURY YUASA MAKES SENSE WHEN IT COMES TO BUSINESS AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
As we head into the cooler months of the year and temperatures decline, automotive batteries undergo changes that can begin to affect vehicle starting performance.
To add more stress to the situation, a fully charged battery at 25⁰C has approximately 100 per cent of its power available to crank the engine, but at 0⁰C the battery’s ability to deliver the same amount of power is reduced by around 35 per cent. The combination of the vehicle’s operating conditions, an increase in engine tolerances, and a decrease in available CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) is a big factor behind an increase in battery failures leading into the colder months.
Research has proven the correlation between the more batteries you test and the more replacement batteries you will sell. This is particularly pertinent when we consider that approximately 110,000 battery sales are lost each year to roadside replacements because people wait until their batteries fail before replacing them.
Over 70 per cent of these vehicles would have visited a service bay or retail outlet within the past six months — and the owners could have potentially benefited from receiving a free battery test during that visit. This is particularly
interesting when considering that approximately one in every 20 batteries identified with a ‘chance of failure’ leads to a battery sale.
Proactive battery testing using a handheld tester like the DHC BT521A from Century Yuasa provides an accurate, on-thespot test result in minutes. It can help identify suspect batteries before they fail and highlight problems with the vehicle’s starting and charging system. But more importantly, it helps your customers avoid the financial and emotional costs associated with a flat or faulty battery. Not only will this translate into increased battery sales, but it’ll also help maintain your reputation for offering good customer service and further cementing your business in the local community.
Contact your Century Yuasa representative on 0800 93 93 93 or visit centurybatteries.co.nz for more information on the extensive range of battery testing and diagnostic equipment.
With one of New Zealand’s most extensive product ranges, exceptional sales support, locally held stock and local product specialists, insist on Century and enjoy the ‘peace of mind’ that comes with stocking one of New Zealand’s leading battery brands. A HEALTHY, PLEASANT, AND SAFE WINTER DRIVING EXPERIENCE DEPENDS GREATLY ON AIR CABIN FILTERS. THE RYCO N99 MICROSHIELD CABIN AIR FILTER USES MEDICAL GRADE MEDIA TO FILTER OUT AIRBORNE BACTERIA AND VIRUSES, AS WELL AS FINE CONTAMINANTS LIKE DUST AND ODOURS
It has been estimated that more than 100 cubic metres of air rush into the cabin every hour when a vehicle is in operation. That large amount of air needs to be filtered so that solid and gaseous particles in the outside air can’t contaminate the cabin air inside the vehicle and cause unpleasant, unhealthy, and even dangerous conditions for drivers.
With the potential concentration of pollutants in cabin air being six times that of outside air, the cabin air filter is the only barrier against drivers’ and passengers’ exposure to these pollutants.
Poor-quality or improperly serviced cabin air filters can cause many problems. These issues can be made worse in winter when drivers tend to keep all the vehicle windows closed, relying more than ever on air that needs to pass through engine heating and the cabin filter. Firstly, bad filters can cause uncomfortable
driving experiences because the heating does not work consistently. Cabin air filters that are clogged can make the heating system work in a reduced fashion and even overheat the engine, but leave the cabin at lower than expected temperatures. Likewise, this scenario can cause poor window fog clearing because inefficient filters can cause condensation on your windshields, which can be especially dangerous in the rainy and foggy conditions that come with winter.
That same humidity often causes mould to grow on filters, especially older or poor-quality ones that lack the design to keep bacteria at bay. That mould — you guessed it — can increase your chance of winter illnesses and create unpleasant smells inside the cabin.
This is where state-of-the-art cabin air filters can make the difference. When your customers are heading out to enjoy some of New Zealand’s most picturesque winter locations or on the road daily for work, ensure they do it comfortably.
Ryco’s N99 Cabin Air Filter range is designed to exceed OE (N99 medicalgrade media with 99.7 per cent efficiency at 0.3 micron). Tested to ISO11155- 2:2009, it has an added seal and N99 medicalgrade media for increased filtering of dust, campfire smoke, soot, pet allergens, odours, viruses, bacteria, and more, down to 0.3 microns. During the recent coronavirus pandemic, we all became very acquainted with the N99 level of respirator/mask
protection, and that same medical-grade level of facial filtration is now available for vehicles. The biggest threat to safe breathing inside the vehicle can be 40 times smaller than the width of a human hair and invisible. The easiest way to protect a vehicle’s passengers from airborne contaminants is to fit a Ryco N99 MicroShield Cabin Air Filter. It’s a medical-grade face mask for the vehicle’s interior airflow. It boasts triple-layer protection against biological contaminants. These include:
1. Poly-phenol anti-viral layer with natural poly-phenol extracts eliminate viruses*, bacteria and allergens
2. Activated carbon odour and gas absorption/barrier
3. Medical-grade melt-blown electrostatically charged 0.3-micron layer
Likewise, these filters have antiviral agents within the media, eliminating airborne viruses (H1N1/H3N2) from the airflow, which is particularly important in winter. At the same time, the anti-bacterial agents within the media stop bacteria from growing in the filter. This delays and, in some cases, stops mould dead in its tracks, preventing it from creating large clusters that can pollute the cabin air and make it smell terrible.
The size of the filtration abilities is also significant. Particulate matter (PM) refers to the particles in the air. These particles can be solids (like dust, leaf matter, etc) or liquids like drops of water. Some common PM sources are car exhaust, smoke from coal-fired power plants, pollen spores, and dust from construction sites. Being able to capture PM that is as small as 0.3 microns before it reaches the inner cabin is the best way to ensure a comfortable and hygienic interior. Ryco’s N99 MicroShield Cabin Air Filter does so and can capture minuscule particles that can penetrate deeper into the respiratory system. It also captures dust and dirt particles to keep the indoor environment cleaner while preventing mould and fungus spores in the filter.
The N99 protects against harmful gases, noxious and pet odours, soot, fire smoke, and smog. For those who suffer allergies, the filter captures pollen that aggravates allergies, asthma, and hay fever. Unlike other filters, Ryco uses medical-grade N99 media and accomplishes an impressive 0.3 microns of filtration, ensuring your customers a pleasant, healthy, safe winter driving experience.
Ryco N99 MicroShield Cabin Air Filters are available from NAPA Auto Parts and Repco. Speak to your local rep to find out more.
IN THE COMING PAGES WE EXPLORE THE LOCAL TYRE SECTOR WITH UPDATES ON PRODUCTS AND TRENDS FROM ITS KEY SUPPLIERS. BUT FIRST, WE EXPLORE SOME OF THE MAJOR TOPICS CURRENTLY IMPACTING THE LOCAL AND GLOBAL INDUSTRY LANDSCAPE
The New Zealand tyre industry is extensive and multifaceted, and it plays a crucial role in keeping our vehicles safely and efficiently on the road. Over the past couple of decades, the market has undergone significant changes, driven by technological advancements, shifting consumer preferences, and global trends. In the next few pages, we hear from some of the key New Zealand suppliers and distributors, parts importers, workshop suppliers, and others within the tyre-related sector and explore how they are adapting to this evolving landscape, the challenges and opportunities they face, and the innovative solutions they bring to the market.
In recent years, the industry has witnessed a rise in demand for tyres that prioritise specific performance characteristics. Fuel efficiency, for example, has become a major concern for drivers, leading to the development of lowrolling resistance tyres. Low-rolling resistance tyres are designed to minimise the energy lost as a tyre rolls, significantly enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. This feat has been achieved through advanced engineering in tread compounds, design, and overall construction.
For instance, one of the primary innovations
in LRR tyres is the use of advanced rubber compounds with silica additives. This reduces hysteresis (the energy loss due to internal friction within the rubber), which in turn reduces heat build-up — a major factor in rolling resistance. Additionally, optimised polymers are used to balance flexibility and durability, ensuring that the tyre maintains good traction without compromising on efficiency.
The benefits of LRR tyres are substantial. They can improve fuel efficiency by up to 3–5 per cent, leading to cost savings and reduced CO2 emissions.
Additionally, there’s a growing interest in all-terrain tyres as consumers favour vehicles capable of handling both on and off-road conditions.
Another major change has been the introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles, which has brought new challenges to the tyre industry.
EVs brought changes to driveability, which have meant changes to nearly every component. In terms of tyres, additional weight, instant torque, rolling resistance, and road noise have been significant instigators of changes in the tyre market.
EVs can be up to 500kg heavier than internal
combustion engine vehicles, which increases wear on tyres during acceleration, cornering, and braking. Therefore, durable tyres that can handle this extra weight are essential for safety and performance. Likewise, the instant torque of EVs demands tyres with excellent traction and handling to manage rapid acceleration, especially in adverse conditions.
Additionally, with less engine noise in EVs,
“As with most tyre categories over the last few decades the ATV/UTV market is going radial. We are seeing this in the new larger sizes 12” and above. The new radial sizing is predominantly for the larger UTV machines from 12” to 15” rims with overall diameters from 25” to 30”.” Ian Harvey, Patch Rubber
“The constantly changing developments in tyre technology, especially in the run flat and ultra-high performance market comes with increasing difficulty in changing the tyres.” Gary Cotterell, Automaster
tyre noise becomes more noticeable. Tyres designed to minimise road noise can greatly improve the acoustic comfort of the ride.
Given the growing demand for these vehicles (in 2018, just over 1 per cent of all new cars registered in New Zealand were electric; in 2023, the market share of fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars was over 27 per cent), many manufacturers around the world are having to consider these factors when introducing new products.
The tyre manufacturing process itself has seen significant advancements. New materials and production techniques have resulted in tyres boasting improved durability, puncture resistance, and performance.
Just as tubeless tyres became commonplace in the 1950s and radial ones in the late ’70s, run-flat tyes — which have been around in niche markets since the ’90s — are only now starting to become commonplace.
Run-flat tyres allow vehicles to continue driving at reduced speeds for a limited distance after a puncture, typically up to 80km at speeds of around 80km/h. This enhances safety by providing drivers with the time needed to reach a workshop or service station. Additionally, run-flat tyres eliminate the need for a spare tyre and tools, freeing up space and reducing vehicle weight which, in turn, helps with fuel efficiency.
Changes in the ATV/UTV tyre market have also been significant. “As with most tyre categories over the last few decades the ATV/UTV market is going radial,” says Ian Harvey of Patch Rubber. “We are seeing this in the new larger sizes 12-inch and above. The new radial sizing is predominantly for the larger UTV machines from 12 to 15-inch rims, with overall diameters from 25 to 30-inch.”
That is not all — according to Harvey, “Traditionally the Lawn and Garden sector had an imperial sizing regime. We are seeing a gradual change to a metric sizing system using a metric width and aspect ratio (still with inches for the rim diameter). Likewise, we are seeing more mid-traction options in the Lawn and Garden market. People insist on running flat land mowers up hills. Originally a full-on tractor tyre was the only option, but these damage the grass. Now we have some great mid-traction products like the Kenda K502 Terra Trac that fit the bill nicely.”
Consumers are increasingly prioritising environmental sustainability. While fuel efficiency and low rolling resistance have been important, new material sciences, manufacturing processes, and product-afterlife management have also helped. Tyre manufacturers are innovating massively with polymer science and sustainable natural rubber to meet environmental goals without sacrificing performance.
A promising undertaking in New Zealand for the intelligent management of tyre waste is the not-for-profit organisation Tyrewise. Over 10 years ago, stakeholders in the tyre industry united to advocate for mandatory product stewardship for end-of-life tyres. Following extensive consultation and industry input, the Government designated tyres as a ‘priority product’ in 2020. Subsequently, in 2023, after further public consultation, regulations were issued requiring anyone importing or selling eligible tyres in Aotearoa New Zealand, whether loose or on a vehicle, to comply with Tyrewise guidelines. Tyrewise’s collaboration has established a ‘level playing field’, ensuring collective efforts towards reducing environmental harm and safeguarding communities. It is now imperative for all individuals to contribute to ensure proper disposal of tyres, thus preventing environmental damage and promoting value creation.
All these changes to tyres — material, design, specs, environmental considerations, consumer expectations etc. — have also meant significant changes to the equipment used to replace those tyres once they reach the end of their life.
“The constantly changing developments in tyre technology,
“Developments in the tyre industry capital equipment sector at the moment is developing automation technology.
The major brands all put a lot of time and enginery into fully automated touchless wheel aligners.” Gary Cotterell, Automaster
especially in the run flat and ultra-high performance market comes with increasing difficulty in changing the tyres,” says Gary Cotterell from Automaster. “The major brands have all put a lot of time and energy into fully automated, touchless wheel aligners,” he continues, alluding to the fact that what used to only require muscle and cleverly positioned levers, these days requires a significant set of technological advancements, all working in tandem to ensure safe, efficient, and damagefree removal and replacement of increasingly technologically-advanced tyres.
“The tyre changer is being constantly updated and improved to meet the demands with many major brands now having a fully automated leverless tyre changer, so the operator has to do very little when replacing these difficult tyres. The wheel balancer developments have also embraced the latest technology with full contactless size detection of the wheel, and complete wheel diagnosis and drift problem solutions are able to be done with sonars and lasers,” says Gary Cotterell.
While some ventures have explored radical concepts like NASA-inspired superelastic, airless tyres made from advanced materials, or tyres with living moss inside them, others focus on more practical goals.
With the rise of electric vehicles, there’s a growing demand for tyres with lower rolling resistance and weight. As autonomous driving becomes more prevalent, consumer expectations will shift towards tyres that minimise noise and vibration. Features like run-flat technology and longer tread life will become essential, especially for fleet operations prioritising efficiency and service continuity.
In the expanding landscape of passenger and light truck fleets, total cost of ownership will reign supreme. With a variety of propulsion systems emerging, new tyre technologies will be necessary. Safety and durability remain paramount, with smart tyres offering improved safety features and predictive maintenance.
Connectivity is poised for significant growth, with intelligent sensors expected to communicate with vehicle computers for automatic adjustments based on user habits. This blend of innovation and practicality is expected to shape the trajectory of tyre technology in the coming years.

PATCH RUBBER TYRE & TUBE ARE PROUD TO HAVE A WIDE RANGE OF SPECIALIST TYRES THAT THEY HAVE BUILT UP SINCE THE ’90S
Across the manufacturers Patch Rubber Tyre & Tube (PRT&T) represent, they now carry over 500 combinations of patterns and sizes in stock in their five regional warehouses. For many years, Kenda and Carlisle (rebranding to Carlstar) have been competitors and leaders in the original equipment tyre business across several product sectors, including ATV, UTV, lawn and garden, golf cart, and small industrial tyres. Both companies continue to develop new tyre products for vehicle and machinery manufacturers’ latest models.
The PRT&T stable also includes tyres from Kings, Duro, Forerunner, and Mars and inner tubes by Marathon. The range is extensive and includes everything from light industrial and wheelbarrow tyres, to lawn and garden, ATV, motorcycle, forklift, and heavy-duty skid steer tyres. The range aims to fill the gaps in the lineup of mainstream PCR/TBR distributors and provide retailers with a single point of contact for ‘unusual’ tyres, generally offering an inner tube for every size.
As with most tyre categories over the past
few decades, the ATV/UTV market is going radial. This trend is evident in the new larger sizes of 12-inch and above. The new radial sizing is predominantly for the larger UTV machines, ranging from 12 to 15-inch rims, with overall diameters from 25 to 30-inch. PRT&T company and product manager Ian Harvey says, “It’s visually quite difficult to tell the difference between these and some off-road LT/SUV tyres. We have even had to have new larger ultra duty inner tubes engineered for these tyres.”
As the range has grown, PRT&T has modified the way customers access products on their website, with the aim of making the process as simple as possible. An easy three-step process of selecting ‘tyres’, then ‘category’, and then ‘rim diameter’ will display all available options, including images, descriptions, and an indication of stock availability in either the North or South Island. The site is optimised for phone use, making it very simple to look up products when on the road or on-site, check availability, and place an order.

TYREWISE IS THE RESULT OF MORE THAN A DECADE’S WORK BY NEW ZEALAND’S TYRE INDUSTRY, ALONGSIDE GOVERNMENT, TO CREATE A NATIONAL REGULATORY SOLUTION, ENSURING END-OF-LIFE TYRES ARE TREATED AS A VALUABLE RESOURCE RATHER THAN WASTE. IF YOU SELL TYRES OR VEHICLES WITH TYRES, THEN YOU CAN EXPECT TO HAVE A TYREWISE REP CALLING AROUND SOON — IF THEY HAVEN’T ALREADY
About 40 per cent of the 6.5 million tyres Kiwis use to keep us moving every year are recycled, repurposed, or used as tyre-derived fuel. The rest end up stockpiled, dumped, or in landfill. Tyrewise works with businesses and communities across New Zealand to make used tyres a resource in our circular economy. After years of planning, they aim to increase collection, recycling, and repurposing to 80 per cent by 2028 and 90 per cent by 2030.
The country’s regulated product stewardship scheme for tyres has a team of field reps making their way around the country helping industry members get ready to be part of the Tyrewise solution.
The reps will go over everything you need to know and do, such as:
• Completing your registration with Tyrewise
• Charging and disclosing the tyre stewardship fee
• Understanding the code of participation
• Knowing requirements and regulations on storing tyres
• How collections will work
• Nominating a Tyrewise software contact person.
Trevor Tutt of Tyrewise scheme delivery managers’ 3R group says, “This is the first time any industry in New Zealand has had a regulated stewardship scheme, so we understand there are a lot of questions. The team is working hard to meet all stakeholders as soon as possible and help to make the transition easy.”
A key part of the reps’ work will be finalising registration with those who have already begun the process. For those needing tyre collections, this will be done in person, and this is a good chance for industry members to meet the reps face-to-face and talk through any queries or concerns.
The reps will also be taking a look at the end-of-life tyres being held. “This is particularly important for those who don’t currently have a service provider to remove tyres, so we can provide feedback to future transporters about the site for when free collections begin from 1 September,” Trevor says.
It’s important tyres becoming end-of-life right now (that haven’t had the fee paid on them) are not being stored in anticipation of the free collections starting in September, he says. “These tyres are not covered by the tyre stewardship fee and need to be recycled through existing options until 1 September.”
Ensuring businesses have access to the Tyrewise tracking software is another important part of the reps’ job. They will need details of the person at each business who will be the contact in this regard.
This software has been specially developed for the scheme to make collections simple, efficient, and transparent. “The software will be there to facilitate the collections and is central to the success of the scheme, making the whole process work and making reporting available in real-time. It’s important we get the correct details for those who will use the software,” Trevor says.
The reps will also go over retailers’ obligations around correctly charging and disclosing the tyre stewardship fee, he says. This is the fee that will cover the future collection, transport, and management of end-of-life tyres so they can become a resource again.
“Of course, the guys will be there to answer any questions people have and to be a point of contact going forward,” Trevor says.
Tyrewise began on 1 March 2024 when all tyres, either loose or on vehicles, began having a tyre stewardship fee attached to them. This fee will be used by Tyrewise to ensure they are collected for free and properly managed so they can become a resource in another product or process, rather than go to landfill or be stockpiled.
The scheme is government-accredited and is overseen by the not-for-profit Auto Stewardship New Zealand.
Be ready before a rep visits you by:
• Registering with Tyrewise
• Displaying point-of-sale support material (if you haven’t received yours, your rep will have some for you)
• Transparently charging the fee on invoices
• Having your health and safety policy ready to submit
• Having a read of the code of participation on the Tyrewise website
• Deciding who will be your organisation’s Tyrewise software contact
• Being familiar with factsheets and guides on the Tyrewise website

After establishing a strong reputation with heavy-duty truck distributors and custom body specialists post-pandemic, mobile service provider Automacky quickly became known for reliability as well as Mark’s expertise as a diesel mechanic and qualified auto electrician.
Capitalising on this, in early 2024, Mark opened Automacky’s dedicated service centre for passenger vehicles in Auckland’s Onehunga, a major milestone in his business journey.
Collaborating with Treadway Equipped, a NZ-owned auto workshop equipment supplier, played a crucial role in Automacky’s expansion. Recommended by a colleague, Treadway Equipped provided tailored equipment solutions for Automacky’s new workshop.
Treadway Equipped’s process involves understanding clients’ business goals and budget constraints. Through a detailed five-
step process, working closely with Mark, they outlined his workshop requirements and specified the right equipment to enhance efficiency, helping the new workshop enter the market smoothly and successfully.
Automacky’s new workshop is a testament to this collaboration. It features Steiner hoists and tyre bay equipment designed for maximum efficiency and functionality. The installation includes three two-post clear floor hoists with asymmetric arms arranged to optimise space and accessibility, reflecting Treadway Equipped’s careful planning and execution of the workshop fit-out.
Loren Bill, sales director at Treadway Equipped, expressed support for Mark’s endeavour, saying, “Mark’s new workshop is near our Auckland facility, and we’re pleased to assist him as he expands his business.”
As Automacky’s service centre emerges as
a reliable option in Onehunga, Mark Sulad’s journey underscores the importance of collaboration and dedication. With Treadway Equipped’s expert workshop fit-out, Automacky is well-positioned for continued success.

to good old-fashioned ‘honest service’ and working with great people.
Ace Auto Parts has now grown to boast a staff of 15, including four reps on the road and several well-known, knowledgeable ‘parts people’ such as Karmen, Shay, James, and others.

SIR JOHN KIRWAN SHARES HIS TIPS FOR KEEPING DRIVERS ON TOP
Breathing, walking slowly, savouring your morning coffee, and better mindfulness of the world around us may not sound like a revolutionary medical treatment, but if you’re a truck driver, courier, taxi, or the like, struggling with your mental health, it may just be the lifeline you need.
In a recent episode of The Depot — an AutoSense podcast hosted by Greg Murphy — former All-Black and mental health advocate Sir John Kirwan speaks about these topics, highlighting the importance of taking care of business and yourself as well as giving practical advice for men within an industry that can be very high-paced and tough.
Kirwan says transforming ordinary, everyday tasks into daily rituals can help safeguard mental well-being — and in an industry rife with anxiety and depression, that’s got to be good news.
“My biggest thing is preventative mental health,” he says. “I’ve been at the bottom of the cliff, and it’s way harder to come back once
you are down there. Putting some simple pillars into your day is scientifically proven to be preventative mental health — don’t let yourself get unwell before you learn this.”
Kirwan, who has been very vocal about his personal battle with depression, has made it a mission to advocate for preventative mental health and illuminate the silent struggles many face and the journey to overcoming them.
Drivers are at heightened risk of anxiety and depression, he says. Faced with isolation, long hours, stress due to other drivers, road and weather conditions, as well as pressure to make deliveries and drop-offs on time and, in many cases, average physical health. Kirwan says tapping into his six pillars of mental well-being — chill, do, connect, move, celebrate, enjoy — could be game-changing.
“The norm is that your brain is always rushing — you don’t have breaks, you’re looking at your phone, dispatch is telling you there are
more deliveries. Breathe, take microbreaks, and walk slowly. Leave your phone in the cab when you stop for a coffee because your brain needs a break; eat your sandwich slowly, and drink your coffee in a real cup if possible, not a takeaway cup. Time is money, but it’s just three or four minutes. When you’re in a bad place, you think about the future and the past. Instead, smell the roses; stop and enjoy the moment you are in. “It’s doing all these little things that will give you 10 per cent more energy.”
Kirwan, who also runs Groov, an app to help businesses support the wellbeing of their workers, says that the first step to addressing mental wellbeing is working out when you are feeling good and noticing mood changes, writing them down, and trying to repeat the conditions that led you there.
Kirwan admits that Kiwi truck drivers, in particular, are hard to crack, given their demographic. The average age of our drivers is 45–59, and 20 per cent are over 60.
“I’m in that age bracket myself, and we’ve been brought up to have three emotions: happy, sad, and don’t cry. We’ve been taught to harden up and not talk about our feelings, but we need to change that because that’s hurting us. Being vulnerable is the biggest strength you will have as a male. That doesn’t mean going around hugging trees — you’ll still have to work hard, provide for your family, and be tough and resilient in times of turmoil. But that doesn’t mean you can’t show emotion, be vulnerable and say, ‘I’m struggling today’.”
Leaders and managers play a critical role when helping drivers to open up. Kirwan, who dubs this practice ‘performance care’, says that if a manager is worried about the mental state of someone on their team, they need to keep stepping in.
“It takes a long time for us to trust people with what’s going on in our lives, so don’t just ask once. Keep stepping in and building that psychological safety bridge, which is just trust, and don’t be an expert. The best thing you can do is listen, don’t comment, and walk next to them when they need help. Ask, ‘What do you need? Do you want to go and see someone? Do you want me to come with you?’ Communication is really important, so make sure that you listen and they feel like they’ve been heard. Sometimes sharing will be enough for people, but others may need more help.”
