Advancements in automotive glass technology

The automotive industry has continuously embraced technological advancements to enhance driving experiences, focusing on safety, efficiency, comfort, and performance. Alongside other innovations, significant progress has been made in car glass technology in the past few years, aimed at making modern vehicles smarter and safer. Some of these advancements include:

Panoramic Windshields: Tesla’s Model X popularised the panoramic windshield with a vast surface area of nearly 3 square metres. This all-glass windshield spans from the front of the car overhead to cover both the driver and passenger seats, providing uninterrupted views and filling the vehicle with natural light. The roof features solar tinting, preventing excessive light filtering through.

Display Projection: Originally found in highclass military aircraft, display projection technology is making its way into the automotive world. It allows drivers to pair their smartphones with the

windscreen, displaying smartphone screens, maps, and driver-assistance apps without distractions. Luxury car models from brands like BMW, Jaguar,

Cadillac, and Land Rover are already incorporating this technology, enhancing safety and productivity.

Gorilla Glass: A product of Corning Incorporated, Gorilla Glass is a revolutionary advancement in glass technology that has reshaped the electronics industry and beyond. Invented in 2005, it was designed to address the growing demand for durable and scratch-resistant glass in consumer electronics such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and wearables.

The story of Gorilla Glass begins with the discovery of an innovative formulation in the late 1950s.

However, it wasn’t until 2005 that Corning researchers revisited this composition and recognised its potential for modern applications. The unique blend of materials primarily consists of alkali-aluminosilicate, which is known for its exceptional strength and hardness.

What sets Gorilla Glass apart is its ion-exchange strengthening process. In this technique, the glass is immersed in a molten salt bath, where larger sodium ions in the glass are replaced by smaller potassium ions from the salt. This process creates a compressive stress layer on the surface, making Gorilla Glass exceptionally strong and resistant to scratches and impacts. The result is a remarkably thin and lightweight glass that provides outstanding protection for electronic devices and, now, to automobile windscreens without compromising on optical clarity or touch sensitivity. Gorilla Glass has a unique combination of attributes, including high scratch resistance, improved retained strength after deep scratches, high surface quality, and excellent chemical resistance. Its remarkable flexibility also allows it to be moulded into curved shapes. It is cost-efficient and durable, withstanding impacts from hailstorms, stones, and debris. Being lightweight, it saves fuel and energy while offering a brighter and sharper display, making it compatible with technologically-advanced vehicles. Additionally, Gorilla glass reduces carbon monoxide emissions, contributing to eco-friendly practices.

Silver Embedded Glass: It is no longer enough that cars have palladium and platinum (cat converters) or gold (on plated electrical connections)... to add to the precious metal list, since 2017 Volkswagen has been giving

customers the chance to embed their glass with silver. What’s the point? Volkswagen’s silver embedded glass addresses safety and driver comfort concerns. It reflects nearly 60 per cent of the sun’s rays, preventing vehicles from turning into ovens when parked in hot regions. In winter, traces of silver in car glass allows for electrification, providing heating capabilities to remove snow and improve visibility, no longer having to rely on lots of electric power to defrost windows. The transparent layer of silver sandwiched between layers of glass acts as a highly effective electricity conductor, meaning just a tiny charge is enough to uniformly defrost entire windscreens in seconds.

Smart Car Glass: Traditionally used in building construction, smart glass technology has found its way into the automotive industry. McLaren’s HyperGT model incorporates advanced glazing, enabling drivers to adjust the amount of light entering the car. This technology reduces glare, improves air-conditioning performance, and enhances driving comfort and safety.

Types of active switchable glass technologies and their common applications include:

• Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) glass, typically seen in privacy partitions in various industries

• Suspended Particle Device (SPD) glass, eg, windows that tint to shade as seen in automotive and buildings

• Electrochromic (EC) glass, eg, coated windows that slowly tint for shading

These car glass technologies are set to revolutionise the automotive sector, with budget cars expected to also adopt them in the near future.

Projecta’s EV Charging Range

HOW DO WORKSHOPS ENSURE THAT THEY ARE PROVIDING THEIR CLIENTS WITH THE RIGHT ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING GEAR THAT IS SUITABLE FOR THEIR VEHICLES WHILE ALSO BEING LONG LASTING? PROJECTA MIGHT JUST HAVE THE SOLUTION

As the world transitions towards a greener future, electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining significant momentum. To keep your customers’ EVs charged and ready for the road, they need the right equipment — and now Projecta can supply you with the right equipment. With high-quality and durable products, Projecta’s EV charging range offers a complete solution for all EV charging needs — from cables and chargers to adaptors and storage solutions.

CHARGING EXPLAINED

Charging points at service stations and car parks will either be tethered or untethered. Tethered have their charge cables permanently attached, which makes them more convenient to use, while untethered require the EV owner to supply their own charge cables.

EV cables connect the charging station and

is often preferred due to its high electrical conductivity. The conductors are insulated with materials such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), which provide electrical insulation and protection against environmental factors like moisture and temperature variations.

Charging cables employ various safety mechanisms, such as thermal sensors and breakers, to protect against overcurrent, overvoltage, and overheating. Additionally, they incorporate specific connector types, such as the SAE J1772 or the Combined Charging System (CCS), to ensure compatibility between different charging stations and specific vehicles.

The charging cables for electric vehicles come with either a Type 1 or Type 2 plug on one end, designed to match the connection point of the electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid.

TYPE 1: Across Australia and New Zealand, the standard plug type for electric vehicle charging stations is Type 1, and it is commonly used by manufacturers from the USA, Japanese brands, and some European car makers. Electric vehicles that utilise this plug type in Australia and New Zealand include the Holden Volt, Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, BMW i3, BMW i8, and Porsche.

In addition to different plug types, EV cables also vary in amperage and phases. Single-phase electricity at 7kW is standard in domestic homes, while three-phase power at 22kW is used in commercial buildings. Three-phase cables have three wires and can carry more electricity over a shorter time, making them three times faster for charging an EV.

Some electric vehicles are designed to only accept single-phase charging, such as those with a Type 1 charging connection. The maximum charging speed of electric cars varies, so it is important to check the vehicle’s highest possible charging speed capacity before purchasing a threephase charging cable.

THE PROJECTA SOLUTION

Projecta’s new EV Charging Range is the perfect complement to any new or old electric vehicle with cables to suit both Type 1 and Type 2.

Key Features include

• Weatherproof and ergonomically designed for comfortable use

• Wide range to suit just about any EV for charging, adapting, and storage

electric vehicle, completing the circuit to allow charging. Once the battery is full or enough charge is obtained, the cable can be disconnected, and the vehicle is ready to go.

EV charging cables are specifically designed to handle high-voltage electricity and are insulated to prevent electric shocks and short circuits. They are composed of multiple conductors, typically made of copper or aluminum, which carry the electric current as well as charging information from the charging station to the vehicle. Copper

TYPE 2: In Australia and New Zealand, the Type 2 connector is utilised for charging electric vehicles produced in Europe and by Tesla Motors. This 7-pin connector is extensively used in Europe and is mandated by the European Union. It is capable of charging electric vehicles with a power output of up to 70 kilowatts.

It’s important to note that electric vehicles’ charging cables and adapter types may vary depending on the model and year. To ensure the correct charging equipment for EVs, it’s best to check the manufacturer’s website for the most accurate and current information on compatible cables and adapters.

• EVA cases included for storage and easy transport

Snap-on — a key to the world

FOR DES TUDOR, A LONG AND MULTINATIONAL CAREER WITH SNAP-ON HAS SEEN HIM LAND A FRANCHISE IN TAURANGA. HE WALKS US THROUGH THE EXCITING JOURNEY THAT TOOK HIM THERE

UK-born Des Tudor studied motor vehicle engineering in an attempt to “marry my love of cars and bikes into a way of paying the bills!” he says, recalling early roles in the motor industry and for highly recognisable brands such as AA and Vauxhall.

It was in one such job where the young Des was introduced to Snap-on and began a lifetime journey with the brand that would take him to the other side of the globe from his home in the UK. “One day I was having a moan about something with [a Snap-on franchisee],” recalls Des. “Must’ve

had signed up for his own franchise.

With six months of Snap-on sales rep experience, Des did initially think the training he was asked to undertake in Dallas, Texas, might be overkill. “What will I learn that’s new?” he remembers thinking, somewhat doubtful that theory could give him something that he hadn’t already gained on the field. “Man, was I in for a treat!” he admits. “The American trainers were absolutely amazing! I thought the UK training was good but this was next level. The enthusiasm from each of these guys was intoxicating, each of them Snap-on veterans who had been with the company for decades, starting as franchisees then moving through the management ranks.”

Back in the UK after training, Des had just enough time to shake off the jet lag, then he was back at the branch loading his own truck to ride around with a field manager. “I was being exposed to another member of the team with a wealth of knowledge and was again learning the finer points of how to load, display, and merchandise the store. Thanks to [him] I still take a huge amount of pride in my truck’s appearance today!”

brand helped him to make the move to the other side of the globe.

They landed in Auckland, then the Bay of Plenty in 2018 — to Pyes Pa, Tauranga, where according to Des, “We truly felt at home!”

been about money or a boss annoying me, or something and he suggested I try Snap-on. ‘Be your own boss’ he said.”

Partially intrigued by the idea, and by a budding passion for sales, the young Des took an initial role as a sales representative for the multinational tool brand. It was a kind of try-before-you-buy role which allowed him to experience the franchise world for up to 12 months and decide if it was for him. Within six months he had saved the fee and

He points out that the first few years kept him really busy: “Learning the business side of things was the hardest — GST returns, balancing your books, managing cash flow and purchases, creating sales, ensuring you hit collections goals but most importantly learning how to manage your time.”

ARRIVING IN NZ

Having come to New Zealand in 2015 to get married and visit friends, “we fell in love with the laidback lifestyle,” says Des. “It reminded us of the UK

However, Covid had other plans and Des had a near-death experience early on in the pandemic. “Snap-on were amazing when I was unable to work,” he recalls, “but, for the first time ever we felt homesick and the tough decision was made to sell up and return home.”

Des went back to the UK where Snap-on there welcomed him “with open arms” into his old sales development role. Although they thought the move was permanent, the call of New Zealand’s lifestyle was too much to ignore and the family have now returned, with Des setting up his own franchise in Tauranga.

“I have a long career with Snap-on and genuinely love what I do,” says Des.

“Setting up the route is so easy. Snap-on survey the territory for you, gathering a list of calls and potential customers. The franchise developer then plots that into five working days and it is uploaded into the Snap-on POS system. When you hit the road all you have to do is fine tune that to suit traffic conditions and customer call cycles.

“I’m a big believer that we are a relationship business, so for me that means getting out early and trying to be as consistent as I can for the customer and that isn’t just sales — [it is] ensuring repairs are completed in a timely manner, ensuring that I keep them informed on back orders… developing this trust and friendships is my number one enjoyment. Obviously, I love the sales as well as they pay the bills!

“Honestly Snap-on was the best thing that could have happened to me,” he insists. “The company gave me an opportunity, the same opportunity everyone gets on day one and I ran with it.”

KOBA – the power you need

THE COMBINATION OF QUALITY, RELIABILITY, AND PRODUCT RANGE MAKE KOBA BATTERIES A TRUE MARKET WINNER

Over the past 12 years, KOBA Batteries (an acronym for Korean Battery) has seen rapid growth not only in the domestic battery market but also in international markets. The popularity of KOBA batteries in New Zealand is unsurprising due to its strong reputation for quality and reliability. KOBA is a favourite among auto electricians, battery resellers, and parts distributors wanting to stand behind a trusted brand that has a steadfast position in the market. They are distributed by R&J Batteries, which took over from ACME Batteries, and are continuing to provide value for customers, and support NZ-owned businesses.

The KOBA product range consists of over 40 different part numbers covering automotive, commercial, marine, and recreational applications. The sheer number of part numbers makes KOBA an excellent choice for businesses wanting to supply batteries for as many applications as possible with a single brand. For automotive applications, the range offers Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM), Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) and maintenance free calcium batteries.

KOBA AGM batteries are suitable for modern vehicles powered by Stop Start technology. Many of the accessories included in modern vehicles

also put extra demands on the battery. KOBA AGM batteries excel in coping with these higher energy drains and demands and notable features include high durability, charge acceptance, cycle life, and vibration resistance.

KOBA EFB batteries are also suitable for Stop Start systems. In comparison to AGM batteries, EFB batteries are considered an entry level option. KOBA EFB batteries deliver up to two times the battery life compared to a calcium battery when fitted in a standard vehicle and have a higher charge acceptance. It is a common misconception that EFB batteries are designed for use only in Stop Start vehicles. A standard vehicle with high accessory loads or demanding power requirements can also enjoy the benefits of a KOBA EFB battery.

For a no-nonsense battery that does the job without compromising on power, KOBA maintenance free calcium batteries are a good choice. They are suitable for both automotive and commercial applications, including European trucks and buses, agricultural machinery, and earthmoving machinery. KOBA calcium batteries are designed to provide safe and reliable starting power. They are built with low resistance envelope separators,

maximising the batteries’ electrical performance and minimising self-discharge. Microfibre tissue increases plate durability which increases the lifespan of KOBA calcium batteries.

R&J Batteries is the exclusive distributor of KOBA batteries in New Zealand. For all product and distribution enquiries, please contact your local R&J Batteries branch in Wiri, Christchurch, Hamilton, Albany, or Nelson. Alternatively, please call 0800 546 000, or visit rjbatt.co.nz.

Connectors — small but mighty components

THEY’RE EVERYWHERE: THEY DISTRIBUTE POWER TO YOUR FAVOURITE CORDLESS DRILL, SIGNAL YOUR ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM TO ACTIVATE, AND EVEN HELP POWER COMPUTING SERVERS. HOW DO WE ENSURE THEY OPERATE WITHOUT A HITCH? NYE LUBRICANTS HAVE THE SOLUTION

Traditionally, the average car features more than 700 connector assemblies that support thousands of individual connections and ensure power to things like the engine, headlights, brake lights, and entertainment systems.

Today, more complex connectors play a critical role in transmitting a wide range of electronic data control signals that are required for safety features (i.e. pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind spot detection). Additionally, high current connectors are responsible for transferring power between the battery and the electric motor. But with every additional connector added to a vehicle, a new point for potentially dangerous failure arises.

As mechanical and hydraulic systems are replaced with electronically controlled systems, connector reliability becomes even more important. To address this issue, specialty synthetic lubricant manufacturer Nye Lubricants offers a comprehensive range of connector lubricants designed specifically to prevent connector failure.

Factors such as vibration, water intrusion, fretting, corrosion and oxidation, and high insertion force

can all contribute to connector failure. However, specialty connector lubricants can prevent these issues from occurring.

As next-generation technologies emerge, lubricants must be formulated to meet changing industry requirements. For example, electric vehicles run hotter, last longer, and have more insertion points than traditional vehicles. Nye’s research focus on connector lubricants ensures that their products meet the changing needs of the industry.

A real-world example of Nye’s expertise in connector lubricants is their work with a supplier of electronic data logging systems for commercial trucks. This supplier approached Nye after experiencing a high failure rate of their USB connectors due to fretting corrosion caused by micro-movements from vibrations. Nye provided the customer with a sample of their leading connector grease, NyoGel 760G, along with application testing and pre-validation data that ensured the product’s performance. The grease protects connectors up to 6.7 million fretting cycles, compared to unlubricated connectors which fail

around 0.5 million cycles. Nye also helped the supplier determine the appropriate amount of grease for each USB connector and select different packaging options suitable for field servicing and mass production.

Connector failure can cause significant issues for electronic systems, and it is crucial to prevent it from occurring. Nye Lubricants’ range of connector lubricants, backed by extensive performance data and decades of experience, ensures the reliability and performance of electronic systems in a range of industries, including the automotive and commercial trucking sectors.

Nye Lubricants is a specialty synthetic lubricant manufacturer that became a member of the FUCHS Group in 2020

YHI New Zealand celebrates success with Blackfern Co-Operative

In celebrating a successful first half of the year, tyre and energy products supplier YHI (New Zealand) Ltd has chosen to reward Blackfern Co-Operative members with quadruple Blackfern reward points on their purchases during the third quarter of 2023.

“It makes sense, and it’s good to give something back,” explained Bevan Messenger, divisional manager of YHI NZ. “Blackfern supports us with our promotions, shares ideas, and has people on the road actively introducing our company to workshops. We feel it’s only right to reward their members.”

and be a key supporter of their customers with quality products and brands such as Toyo, Pirelli, Nankang, and Nitto, alongside a range of batteries, EV chargers, and solar products.

“But it’s not just about the products,” says Bevan. “At YHI it’s all about building strong customer relationships. We have always been a big supporter of establishing regional operations and hiring local talented individuals to offer on-the-ground, local support to our customers.”

We asked Bevan what has made the first half of the year successful, and his response was as enthusiastic as it was telling. “Not only has our tyre business grown significantly, but we are also seeing increased sales in our battery range and other energy products.” He points to a trend towards safety and buying quality, which leads to resellers seeing the opportunity of increased margins on the sale of premium products not apparent on lesser, cheaper ones.

Bevan also talks about future plans. “A big part of the future includes the move towards EVs, an industry in which YHI stands out from the crowd. Our first EV-specific tyre range, the Nankang AS-3 EV, has just arrived, and we supply and provide support for a range of EV chargers. Incidentally,

we’re also launching an EV charger special offer just for members of Blackfern Co-Operative.”

With Bevan speaking so highly of Blackfern CoOperative, we decided to drop Roger at Blackfern a call to ask about his views of YHI: “They’ve been great suppliers and supporters of our members. They’re very responsive. If we give them a call on behalf of a member, YHI are quickly on the ball. Now they’re doing quadruple Blackfern reward points, it’s going to be advantageous to both our members and YHI — we expect to see YHI grow even more.”

If you’d like to find out more about YHI (New Zealand) Ltd you can visit their web site at yhiautomotive.co.nz, or give them a call on 0800 99 33 44.

Much more than a retread

SINCE 1985, BEAUREPAIRES HAS BEEN SERVING KIWI CUSTOMERS TO HELP KEEP THEM SAFE ON OUR ROADS. NOW, THEIR BUSINESS IS REBRANDING AND GETTING A NEW NAME — ADVANTAGE TYRE SOLUTIONS. WE EXPLORE MORE ABOUT THIS DEVELOPMENT

The Advantage Tyre Solutions brand represents the coming together of two of NZ’s largest tyre retailers, Beaurepaires and Advantage The Tyre Professionals, under a single Kiwi-owned brand. Both companies have a long, highly reputable history of servicing New Zealand.

Beaurepaires has excelled in performance, safety, and reliability since 1922. Founded by

purchased the Beaurepaires retail tyre stores and Beaurepaire’s brand license from Goodyear and Dunlop Tyres (NZ). Today, Beaurepaires stands as a symbol of its founders’ vision and dedication. Its success lies in an unparalleled product range and exceptional service, making it a trusted name in the automotive industry.

The business today also benefits from an

The Advantage network has already existed here in New Zealand for over 20 years, leading the industry in commercial and fleet tyre services. Fifteen stores are currently providing car, truck, bus, and agricultural tyre solutions under the Advantage The Tyre Professionals banner.

Advantage Tyres has existed as a network of independent tyre dealers located throughout New Zealand. Each store is NZ owned and operated by people with years of experience in the tyre industry. They are equipped to service all types of vehicles and fleets — both in-store or at the clients’ preferred location. Their initial network focus was servicing the tyre needs of commercial fleets, which in New Zealand can be everything from freight trucks to the farm ute. This commercial focus has meant they needed to be flexible to service vehicles when and where needed. It also means they have developed a focus on providing the very best tyre products and services to help keep their customers safe and reduce their operating costs. This focus on expertise, flexibility, safety, and service now extends to tyres for 4×4, agricultural, and luxury passenger vehicles as well.

Sir Frank Beaurepaire, the company expanded its product range and services over the years. From manufacturing tyres in 1933 to reaching milestones like processing its two-millionth tyre in 1954, Beaurepaires has maintained a commitment to quality. Throughout its history, the company expanded its national network and merged with other entities to become Dunlop & Olympic Tyres. In 2006, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company took full ownership then, 10 years ago, Beau Ideal Ltd

exclusive partnership with the world’s leading tyre manufacturer, Michelin — who also own and manufacture BFGoodrich tyres which are sold here in New Zealand. As well as the partnership with Michelin, this brand consolidation — Beaurepaires and Advantage The Tyre Professionals — brings broader tyre importing, wholesale, and national distribution opportunities to a network of more than 60 retail stores offering tyre sales and automotive services.

“Beaurepaires is a brand that has been licensed for use here in New Zealand for our retail tyre replacement and additional automotive services,” says Tyreline Group and Advantage Tyre Solutions managing director Grant Rushbrooke. “But now as we reshape ourselves into a future focused, customer-oriented business, the time is right for us to define our own destiny, and to bring together a more connected offering.

“We’re now building on that reputation for tyre solutions and expertise and applying the brand name to our entire group,” continues Rushbrooke. “So, this isn’t just a new brand to replace Beaurepaires, but a renewal of the Advantage brand and the application of it to represent all the solutions that we can offer Kiwi vehicle owners, including being NZ’s home of Michelin and BFGoodrich.

“We know Kiwis have fond memories of Beaurepaires and Vince Martin and have continued to enjoy great service and guidance over the years,” Rushbrooke says referring to the iconic television ad campaigns with Dutch-Australian actor Vince Martin which became synonymous with the brand. The campaigns, which ran for close to 30 years across both NZ and Australia, ended 10 years ago but are still remembered as long-lasting pieces of TV nostalgia. “But your local stores aren’t going anywhere — we have the same stores, the same friendly faces, and the same expertise. But now we’re committing to a range of customer advantages that will keep them safer for longer and will ensure they get the most out of their tyres.”

The new Advantage branding began to appear across stores from April, with the last of the stores transitioning later in the year.

IN AN ERA WHEN SOCIAL MEDIA IS KING OF MARKETING EFFORTS, DO AUTOMOTIVE WORKSHOPS REALLY NEED TO JOIN THE CRAZE? WE EXPLORE THE PROS AND CONS OF JOINING THE DIGITAL KIDS

Attracting new customers is a common challenge for businesses, and New Zealand auto repair shops are no exception. While independent auto shops handle the majority of repairs, the lack of transparency and fierce competition can hinder customer acquisition and overall business growth. However, leveraging the power of social media can offer a myriad of advantages, setting workshops apart from competitors and boosting their appeal to potential clients. The downside of this is the fact that social media, done well, requires very specific skills and committed effort from what can be already busy admin staff. However, the benefits can be great.

Here are some ways your auto repair shop can leverage these marketing channels:

INCREASE TRANSPARENCY

Transparency is key in fostering trust. Auto repair shops often face a perception of low transparency due to the complexity of their work. To dispel this mystery, use social media to share behind-thescenes videos of repairs in progress, introduce your skilled staff, highlight exceptional technicians, and showcase images of your well-maintained waiting room and shop area. Providing customers with an inside look into your shop and services will enhance transparency, building confidence in your shop’s abilities.

EDUCATE CONSUMERS

Many auto repair customers experience ‘shop anxiety’ stemming from a lack of knowledge about the diagnosis and repair processes. This uncertainty

Top global influencers in the auto repair industry

Use social media as an educational tool, offering videos and posts that explain the reasons behind your shop’s pricing (breaking down service costs) and detailing the procedures involved in common repairs. Educating customers through social media can alleviate their fears and increase their trust in your shop.

SHOWCASE POSITIVE REVIEWS

Positive reviews from satisfied customers can significantly influence potential clients’ decisions. Sharing these reviews through social media posts can effectively promote your shop’s high-quality services. Online reviews carry substantial weight, with 84 per cent of people considering them as reliable as personal recommendations. Utilise social media platforms like Facebook or Google reviews to feature customer reviews directly on your business page, or share reviews received in person or on paper through posts on various social media channels.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF CRITICISM

Bad reviews are part and parcel of the internet. They will happen. Sometimes they are fair, sometimes they are not. No matter what, it is important that these negative reviews are responded to with courtesy and directness. This not only shows that your shop is able to review processes and correct mistakes when they happen, adding more transparency to your business.

MAXIMISE CUSTOMER TARGETING

For most auto repair shops, targeting local customers is crucial for promoting services. Social media platforms offer powerful tools and features to segment and reach specific audiences based on demographics, geolocation, and even car ownership duration. Utilising Facebook or Instagram advertising tools, for instance, allows you to deliver targeted ads exclusively to individuals in your local area.

Successful conviction for dishonest WoFs

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has successfully prosecuted a director of an Auckland inspecting organisation who dishonestly accessed the Motor Vehicle Register. This is the first prosecution of its kind since the Waka Kotahi Regulatory Services Safer Vehicles team was established in 2019.

Aucklander Brett Wayne Robinson pleaded guilty to one charge of dishonestly accessing the Motor Vehicle Register. Mr Robinson misrepresented himself as a person qualified to carry out Warrant of Fitness (WoF) inspections and was sentenced to eight months home detention plus payment of various costs.

“Mr Robinson was never appointed by Waka Kotahi as a vehicle inspector and was issuing WoFs using the details of a vehicle inspector who no longer worked at his inspecting organisation,” says Nicole Botherway, Senior Manager Safer Vehicles.

“He issued over 900 WoFs – that’s over 900 vehicle owners and their passengers, and anyone travelling the same roads as these vehicles who had their safety potentially put at risk.”

At the time of the initial investigation, Waka Kotahi revoked the inspecting organisation

News in Brief

RECORD BREAKING MONTH FOR NEW VEHICLE SALES

Motor Industry Association’s Chief Executive Aimee Wiley says that June 2023 registrations of 23,560 is the biggest new vehicle sales month on record — 95.5% higher than June 2022 and 2556 units higher than the previous biggest month, March 2022 (21,004 registrations).

What these record months have in common is clean car policy change. In March 2022, people

appointment held by Mr Robinson and his business partner and revoked all of the WoFs issued by Mr Robinson. That meant vehicle owners were required to get a new WoF elsewhere. Ms Botherway says vehicle owners rely on vehicle inspectors to conduct inspections with integrity and be assured that a passed WoF means their vehicle is safe.

“We have appointed over 8,000 vehicle inspectors at more than 3,500 inspecting organisations and the vast majority of them carry out vehicle inspections correctly. For their sake, and for the public of New Zealand, it’s important we protect the integrity of the system and act when we do find fraudulent behaviour.”

The role of the Waka Kotahi Safer Vehicles team is to review inspection organisations and vehicle inspectors to check compliance. If serious noncompliance is found, the team has a range of tools to ensure the right regulatory response is applied, including enforcement action.

“Since 2019, we’ve spent time

RESHAPING STREETS

The Government recently announced that it will progress the Reshaping Streets package of legislative changes that will give councils more options to improve urban spaces and encourage safer and more sustainable travel.

Reshaping Streets will enable communities and local authorities to work together to modify their existing streets to provide more space for people of all ages and abilities to move around, whether they’re biking, walking, using public transport or driving.

The rule gives councils options to pilot (trial) street changes to inform future permanent changes, support local neighbourhood street events, and better manage traffic in places that are important

building our team and our capabilities, and putting in place a regulatory framework that is firm and fair. We’re continuously reviewing and refreshing our approach to ensure we take the right action at the right time”, says Ms Botherway.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency works to create transport solutions for all New Zealanders — from helping new drivers earn their licences, to leading safety campaigns to investing in public transport, state highways and local roads

for community life such as town centres, in neighbourhoods, and around schools.

Europe is a world away

IF YOU HAVE ONLY WORKED ON ASIAN, AUSTRALIAN, OR EVEN AMERICAN VEHICLES, TACKLING EUROPEAN MODELS CAN BE A LITTLE DAUNTING. HERE, WE TRY TO MAKE IT A BIT EASIER

Not all cars are created equal, and this is never more true than when it comes to the difference between cars manufactured in different continents. In this piece we will discuss some of the differences with European cars and compare them to popular American and Asian makes. Many local mechanics have a primarily Asian and sometimes American and Australian service background, with the occasional European car making an appearance. There is always extra time required to understand the different terminology and diagrams, or locate components.

IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME

Most often, the complaints one hears from shops have to do with an inability to find information or diagrams for the European system in question. Sometimes technicians can’t find the location of a component (such as a specific relay or fuse in one of the multiple fuse blocks or holders hidden all over the car). Most of this article relates to BMW/ Mini and VW/Audi, but much of the info and terminology will carry over to other makes.

European vehicles are often identified by chassis numbers, like a BMW F15 (2014-18 X5), or an Audi 4L9 (Q7 SUV 2007-up). Knowing these codes will make finding information easier. A quick web search for these lists is recommended and either print, bookmark, or save them to an online drive so you cn always access them.

The number one complaint one hears is: “The wiring diagram is too hard to understand or even find.” The truth is the technician simply can’t find an aftermarket redrawn wiring diagram for the system in question and he or she doesn’t know how to read a Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) track diagram.

Technicians often complain about DIN diagrams but, like everything else in this business, it requires us to put in some effort and learn so we can understand and effectively use these. True, they can be a little daunting at first, but once you start you will see the simplicity and logic behind them.

The first thing one needs to understand when reading a DIN diagram is source power always starts at the top of the diagram and ground is always at the bottom. Easy, right? What gets confusing is the tracks (Figure 1). The numbers at the bottom of the page are the tracks. Notice in track 2 the (red) rt wire leaving fuse 27 goes to a number 16 with a box around it. Now go to track 16 (Figure 2) and you see the rt wire again, bringing current to the fan control module.

Many use Alldata, and it has captions below the diagrams that identify each component, connector, ground or is, along with hyperlinks for locations and extra information (Figure 3). In figure 2, track 17, this is a ground with the circled number 640 next to it. When we look in the legend, it’s identified as ground connection 2 in the engine compartment. At the top of figure 2 there is a component labelled J293. Referencing the legend, J293 is labelled as the coolant fan control module and a hyperlink takes you to the connector view of the component.

This is a huge time-saver and makes testing a lot easier. For many technicians, their go-to diagram are the redrawn ones. But with some manufacturers, it is preferable to view the factory diagrams, as they tend to be more accurately drawn and have hyperlinks available. The benefit of the redrawn diagram is it includes other components (in this case, temperature sensors) related to the system (Figure 4). In this case, everything is on one page, but it also shows components that aren’t used in this particular car. The components may differ if the vehicle was equipped with a different engine package. Whichever version you use, the DIN diagrams aren’t as difficult to read as most believe they are. When diagnosing circuits on these vehicles, it is crucial to understand terminal designations used by the component and car manufacturers. The practice of terminal designation was put into place to facilitate proper connection

identification of the wires going to the components when diagnosing and repairing the cars. These terms come up all the time when following test procedures and flow charts and are also usually included in the legend. Some of the common terminal designations are Terminal 15 (switched ignition voltage supply), Terminal 30 (battery positive voltage supply), and Terminal 31 (vehicle ground supply). There are more, and they will definitely help you understand the operation of the circuits so you can make a more accurate, quicker diagnosis, so it is recommended looking them up and adding them to your files.

CODING AND PROGRAMMING

When it comes to these vehicles, ‘coding’ is a word that is often spoken. Many components that are replaced will need to be ‘coded’ to work properly in the systems.

For example, headlight assemblies will need the modules coded to the vehicle before they will function. Some components will require programming and coding when replaced, while others may just require programming. So… what’s the difference? Coding means basically setting up the module, providing the software needed to operate. You just need to configure the module so it knows the region it is operating in and the options that are equipped on the vehicle.

A module has just a basic level of software (basic operating instructions) when it is first installed. Programming, however, allows it to receive the operating software for the specific vehicle it is installed in (vehicle configuration). This procedure is more involved and may require additional procedures or modules to be updated. In the case of BMWs, the manufacturer calls for all modules to be brought up to the same level. BMW calls this the ‘Integration level’ (or I-level). For instance, if you replace a steering rack in the car, you will be unable to program just that module with the factory tool. The factory tool will go in and check the level in each module and determine which ones are behind. You will then have to update them all.

Auto Channel Issue #60 August 2023
Figure 2 – Components are labelled in alphanumeric characters that will remain the same across DIN wiring diagrams. At the bottom, the numbers surrounded by the square and the circle represent a callout of where that circuit continues

Sure, that may not seem like that big of a deal to some. But with the number of modules in these cars and depending on your internet connection, workshops could be looking at spending anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours on this — if everything goes well.

Sure, there are some aftermarket tools that will allow technicians to just program one module, but with that comes risk. If that module is now programmed at a higher level than the other modules in the vehicle, this can create problems with communication between them and systems can become inoperative, setting off codes and fault messages. You can get yourself into a situation that can only be remedied with a factory scan tool.

The idea is to tread lightly and recognise your pain

threshold before getting involved. Do your research before purchasing a used component to make sure you or someone you know has the ability to make that component work in that vehicle. This may require circuit board-level work and special tooling, as a lot of these modules are intended to be used one time on one vehicle.

COMPLETING THE PROCESS

Oftentimes, when replacing components on European vehicles, they require additional steps before they will work properly. Again, this comes down to following service information. BMW calls these extra steps and procedures ‘adaptations’. An adaptation can be as easy as clearing values and relearning the crankshaft position after replacing the sensor. It also could be inputting the adjustment value of the new fuel injectors you just installed (Figure 5). In the VW/ Audi world, however, this is called ‘basic settings’. When replacing some components on these cars, you need to clear out the existing settings, learned values, or calibrations, and then relearn them using the basic settings mode.

This mode is like an active test mode that will operate some functions and perform procedures needed to complete the necessary relearns or calibrations. For instance, if you install a replacement ABS control unit (after coding the module), you will need to go into basic settings to perform brake system bleeding, relearn the steering angle sensor, and test the yaw rate sensor.

Basic settings are also used when setting up a new throttle body or transmission after repair or replacement. Aftermarket tools have reasonable coverage

when it comes to Volkswagen and Audi, but again, components may require coding and programming after replacement. Some components come with theft protection active and require a factory tool to remove the component protection before the module can be

put into service. As always, read service info before attempting these procedures and make sure your tools have the ability to complete the process, or you could end with a faulty component or, even worse — vehicle.

CONCLUSION

These European cars require a lot of maintenance and can be very profitable to service. However, like most vehicles, they require specific procedures (and liquids) to be performed. The use of the wrong oils or extended service miles can have detrimental effects on the longevity of the vehicle. Working on these cars can be time consuming and daunting, but… if you put a bit of duct tape over the logo on the bonnet and go about your diagnosis like you would any other vehicle, you will probably be fine.

Read the service info and manuals. Understand the system you’re working on. Formulate a test plan and follow it until your results lead you to the root cause of the problem. The component may go by a different name, but it’s most likely the same component you see failing on the models you usually service.

It’s true — European cars do require you to speak a different language, but it’s nothing you can’t learn. Ciao!

Crash course of the future

AS VEHICLE TECHNOLOGIES CONTINUE TO EVOLVE, WE EXPLORE HOW NEW ZEALAND COLLISION REPAIR SHOPS ARE LIKELY TO BE AFFECTED IN THE YEARS TO COME

The collision repair industry — much like the rest of the automotive sector in New Zealand stands at the precipice of a transformative era, driven by rapid technological advancements and the growing prominence of electric vehicles (EVs). As the industry looks forward to the future, key changes are on the horizon, demanding adaptation and preparation from collision repair shops across the country. Let’s delve deeper into the potential changes and explore how the New Zealand auto repair industry can proactively respond to these challenges.

Electric Vehicles and Lightweight Materials: With the surge in popularity of electric vehicles, collision repair practices will witness substantial shifts. The added weight of EV drivetrains calls for compensatory weight reduction in other areas. This calls for the adoption of lightweight materials and innovative joining methods in repair processes. As EVs become the preferred choice for consumers, OEM factories and suppliers are likely to experience dramatic changes, and new manufacturers might enter the market to cater to the growing demand for EVs.

ADAS and Calibration Expertise: The future of collision repair lies in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and precise calibrations. The global industry is expected to see a staggering 250 million ADAS-equipped vehicles by 2035. To ensure vehicle safety and performance, repairers must attain proficiency in calibrating the intricate sensor and camera systems. This shift will continue to give importance to new roles, such as ADAS/ calibration technicians, to meet the specialised demands of the modern automotive landscape.

Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality: Embracing cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be paramount for collision repair shops. AI can revolutionise repair processes by enabling voice-based

searches for owner manuals and repair procedures. Augmented reality will also gain prominence, empowering repairers with AR glasses to efficiently conduct vehicle scanning and view repair procedures. By 2035, vehicles are expected to communicate more effectively with repairers, streamlining diagnostic processes and enhancing repair efficiency.

Specialisation and Telematics: Vehicle complexity will continue to rise, necessitating repair shops to focus on specialisation. Coping with various OEM ADAS systems will require specialised skills and knowledge. Telematics will play a pivotal role in connecting vehicles to various systems, including infrastructure and user-based insurance, ushering in data-driven repair decisions and enhancing vehicle safety.

Rising Repair Costs: The collision repair industry is likely to experience substantial cost escalation due

of parts, requiring investments in advanced training, cutting-edge technology, and OEM certifications.

EV Infrastructure and Specialised Spaces: As EVs gain traction, collision repair shops must invest in EV charging stations and create dedicated spaces to cater to EV-specific repair needs. Specialised facilities will ensure that repairers are well equipped to handle the unique challenges posed by electric vehicles.

Autonomous Vehicles: While widespread consumer ownership of autonomous vehicles might take time, AV fleets, robo-taxis, delivery trucks, and trains are expected to become more common, especially in urban areas. As AV technology advances, collision repair shops must prepare for a future where autonomous vehicles become a significant part of the automotive landscape.

To thrive in this transformative era, New Zealand collision repair shops must prioritise technician training, invest in advanced tools and equipment, and embrace digital technologies. Specialisation in ADAS and EV repairs will be essential to meet the growing demand for skilled repairers. Moreover, building a strong online presence and leveraging AI and augmented reality tools will cater to the preferences of Millennial and Gen Z consumers.

By proactively embracing the future of collision repair and staying ahead of technological advancements, New Zealand auto repair shops can secure their position as leaders in the evolving automotive landscape. As the industry undergoes a profound transformation, forward-thinking preparation will be the key to sustained success and growth.

TEAM BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES

The industry and car show for the trade

AUTORAMA BRINGS TOGETHER A HUGE RANGE OF BUSINESSES THAT CATER FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN OR WORKING IN THE AUTOMOTIVE TRADE. WE EXPLORE WHY THIS EVENT IS NOT TO BE MISSED

The trade and car show, Autorama, is racing. The event brings together the wide range of businesses that supply machinery, tools, and parts to the automotive sector and the general public.

Exhibitors are varied in size and product ranges but are all equally excited about participating at an automotive trade and car show. For example, Treadway Equipped will be exhibiting their range of workshop equipment and Wurth will be present with their high-quality range of tools. Goodyear Fitzroy will have their wheel protectors (Alloygators) at the event and Chemz will have their range of spray lubricants for sale. From mag wheels and tyres to battery suppliers, the automotive sector has embraced the Autorama concept.

Some businesses, however, are unable to physically participate at Autorama in November but still want to be involved… no problem. The team at Autorama can arrange things like sponsorship and on-venue advertising opportunities so that your brand is still present.

Paul and the team at Aussie Spares, in Hamilton, are an example of being resource-constrained. Logistically, being at Autorama and running a hands-on business at the same time can be a big ask. Paul has taken up the ‘Best Australian’ car sponsorship package and an additional advertising opportunity at the venue. If a business wants to be involved but November doesn’t suit for whatever reason, contact the Autorama team to discuss how your business can be part of the event in a similar way to Aussie Spares.

Likewise, incorporated with the trade exhibitors will be The Grand National Rod & Custom Show. The car show has excited the special interest vehicle community. At least three new, professionally built cars will be unveiled at Autorama with names involved like Rods By Reid

and GMS Hot Rods, who are no strangers to highquality builds and awards. These professionals are at the top of their game in NZ and internationally. Their order books are full, but they understand the need to maintain their brand presence in the marketplace. The Wild Bunch will have three of their drag cars on display at Autorama. From top hot rods, customs, to competition, classic and vintage, most tastes for special interest vehicles will be catered for.

If a business supplies parts or components to the special interest vehicle sector, then exhibiting at Autorama is targeting your customer base and potential B2B opportunities.

If a business has an end of year conference, VIP, or staff function in November to plan for, contact the Autorama team and incorporate your business function with the trade and car show. The Mystery Creek venue is situated on 114 hectares of natural surroundings, conveniently located just 15 minutes from Hamilton CBD, and two minutes from Hamilton Airport. It is a large multi-purpose venue catering for both indoor and outdoor events of any size, scale, or type. This can be an excellent place and time to team build or expand the training and knowledge of your automotive industry team.

A match made in automotive heaven

IN THE AUTOMOTIVE UNIVERSE, THERE ARE FEW FORCES THAT COMBINE LIKE A HEAVENLY V12 ENGINE AND A REDLINE. KOENIGSEGG AND FASEP ARE ONE EXAMPLE

While Swedish marque Koenigsegg has been busy pushing the limits of performance and luxury, FASEP, an Italian company, has been quietly dominating the wheel alignment and balancer technology scene. Known for their lightning-fast precision, FASEP’s alignment technology has caught the attention of none other than Koenigsegg, who have wisely chosen their wheel aligners for their workshops. It’s like a match made in automotive heaven, where perfection and accuracy are the commandments.

When it comes to achieving that perfect driving experience, you cannot overlook the importance of wheel alignment. It’s the difference between gliding on the road like a cheetah chasing its prey

or wobbling around like a confused penguin. And that’s where FASEP comes in, flexing their Italian engineering muscles with their top-of-the-line wheel aligners. These bad boys are faster than Shane van Gisbergen at the start line and more accurate than a Swiss watch on steroids.

FASEP isn’t just your run-of-the-mill alignment/ balancing company. With their cutting-edge technology, they’ve managed to perfect the art of wheel alignment in all light conditions, ensuring that your tyres are hitting the road with surgical precision. It’s as if they’ve taken a vow to eradicate misaligned wheels from the face of the Earth, one alignment at a time.

Christian von Koenigsegg doesn’t mess around. Back in 1994, the 22 year old founded the Koenigsegg business armed with little more than a deep passion for ultimate performance and a dream to build the world’s greatest sports car. Koenigsegg demanded nothing but the best, and that’s why they turned to FASEP for their wheel alignment needs. Who better to trust with this task than FASEP, the alignment gurus who can set up your alignment faster than Jeremy Clarkson can say “Koeniggggsenisseggsegnignigsegigiseg”.

We’re touring New Zealand demonstrating FASEP wheel aligners. Some of the fastest, most accurate, and trusted wheel aligners on the market.

FASEP Wheel aligners use technology that is not impacted by strong light conditions like so many other systems, and it’s mobile. If you want to experience the speed, accuracy, and ease of using a FASEP wheel aligner, Treadway Equipped are offering obligation free demonstrations to show just how quick this system is. They’ll even bring it to you.

Rust no more

AUTOBLAST HAS DESIGNED A CLEVER WAY TO PROTECT KIWI AUTOMOBILES FROM THE RUSTY PERIL. NOW, THEY ARE SEEKING ENTREPRENEURS TO CAPITALISE ON THE BUSINESS

In New Zealand, despite the absence of road salt and boasting a mild climate, vehicles face a significant rusting challenge due to the country’s warm, moist air. This moisture condenses on cold steel parts, creating an ideal environment for rust to thrive, especially for low-mileage vehicles that don’t have enough time to dry out during the day. The coastal location of New Zealand exacerbates the problem as salt draws in moisture and accelerates the rusting process. As a result, under-body rusting can occur within just a couple of years.

To address this issue, Autoblast’s David Kirkham has developed a unique solution called Autolast. This process involves applying various sprays to coat the entire underside of a vehicle, forming a protective layer that dries, hardens, and remains in place. Unlike traditional wax/ oil rust-proofing services that only cover the inside of chassis rails and are prone to slumping and fading, Autolast provides comprehensive protection, even for external painted surfaces under the vehicle. Autoblast also offers a highly effective rust protection method called goldstandard galvanising. It also offers galvanising via Arc Metal Spray, a highly effective rust protection method.

Recognising the growing need for rust protection, David is offering a franchise opportunity to business individuals nationwide. The demand for Autoblast’s services is such that vehicles from coastal areas,

On-site testing facilities subject products to extremes of temperature, intense UV light, exposure to chemicals, and in humid and salt-laden conditions to ensure that they perform under stresses that greatly exceed

those of most real world situations.

The Auckland facilities cover some 7,500 square metres and boast state-of-the-art, highly automated manufacturing capabilities. Huge investment has been made in computer-controlled moulding machines that enable extremely precise moulding tolerances to be achieved, down to as little as plus or minus .02mm. Additionally, the Waihi electronics plant, purpose built in 2007, boasts the latest automated, high precision assembly systems. In 2013 the plant became selfsufficient in Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs) production. This facility places a staggering 53,000 LEDs onto PCBAs every working day, totalling 12.8 million LEDs per year (in 2022).

In accordance with HELLA’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the Auckland factory uses 100 per cent renewable energy and 95 per cent of waste material generated during the moulding process gets recycled into packing trays and glue tubes, and for purging machines between different types of plastics.

New Zealand’s maritime history, world-class boat building and yacht racing success saw HELLA New Zealand become the global headquarters for Hella marine in 2004. The company has since created the iconic NaviLED LED Navigation lamp range, which has cemented their position as leaders in marine lighting.

Killer switch explained

A MASTER BATTERY CUT-OFF SWITCH — OR KILL SWITCH — CAN NOT ONLY PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY BUT ALSO THE DRIVER

Amaster battery cut-off switch is an important safety feature in motorsport as it helps prevent alternator circuit damage due to voltage surges but, more importantly, it stops the engine automatically when turned off, preventing ‘run-on’. Likewise, it serves as a simple and effective anti-theft device for competition vehicles.

DO I NEED ONE?

If you are involved in motorsport in New Zealand, fitting a cut-off switch is required. Motorsport New Zealand Schedule A states that “all vehicles shall be fitted with a spark-proof ignition switch/circuit breaker” and it indicates various specifications around what circuits it must break (including the ignition, fuel pump, and alternator), and that a clearly identified switch shall be positioned within reach of the occupants while in their normally seated position with harnesses worn. The regulation also states that for ‘Closed Dedicated Motorsport Vehicles’ competing in race events, an external ignition switch/circuit breaker shall be fitted.

WHERE DO I GET ONE?

Racer Products, New Zealand’s premier motorsport supplier, has everything needed for a car to be prepared for the racetrack, from bonnet catches to sticker kits, steering quick release kits to window nets. Likewise, they offer cut-off switches.

The most common cut-off switch offered by Racer Products is the Grayston Master Battery Cut Off Switch. Often it is installed under the bonnet right next to the battery as this keeps the heavy battery cables as short as possible. However, depending on your or your client’s vehicle, you might have it located on the dash or within reach of the driver.

It’s relatively easy to install with some basic tools and wiring knowledge.

IS IT HARD TO WIRE?

It is important to ensure that the switch is properly rated to handle the current requirements of the vehicle’s electrical system to avoid damage or malfunction. If you’re mounting this under the bonnet or in the cockpit you’ll need a pull cable. The Grayston Pull Cable is 1.5m long. This means you’ve got plenty of cable to mount it where it will be visible and easy to pull in an emergency situation. You’ll also need a sticker kit to make sure you’ve clearly marked where the cable pull is. The Grayston Scrutineer Sticker Sheet has all the stickers you need to be within the rules and be safe when you’re racing. There you have it, all you need to keep to the rules and keep yourself safe. Happy racing!
