THE MAN BEHIND THE COLLECTION The collection that Hanspeter Winklmayr created in celebration of Via La Moda’s 30th birthday is much like the man himself – practical and sensible, but with no detail spared.

Hanspeter has been at the helm of Via La Moda since inception, and though much has changed, much has stayed the same. Methods may have advanced, but the detail and craftmanship that goes into every piece still reflects the utmost respect.

Being born into a family of generations of equine accessory makers in Europe and being the youngest to graduate with a master’s degree in f ine leather design in Vienna, Austria, means that Hanspeter has pretty much seen it all when it comes to the craft of leather.

What he f inds most thrilling, however, is the fact that people still wear his bags 30 years down the line. That, he regards as the biggest achievement of them all.

This was the final bag to have been included into the 30th Anniversary Collection. According to TRAUDE wife of designer in chief – this was the missing piece.

As he was paramount in designing the new collection, TRAUDE, is in turn, the piece that completes Hanspeter, of course naming this bag after her is only but appropriate.

THE EVOLUTION OF VIA Thirty years ago, fellow Austrians Walter Hauser and Hanspeter Winklmayr pursued an opportunity to provide the South Af rican market with well designed, amazing leather handbags. The business grew f rom strength to strength, and today, the pieces f rom their workshop are not only treasured locally, but internationally as well.

The initial name, Bags of Joy, was transformed into Eye Q, but then was promptly followed

by Via La Moda; and a few years later, Via Veneta. The Via La Moda brand traditionally housed the more exclusive, heirloom pieces whereas the Via Veneta brand was home to more fashion forward pieces.

In celebration of thirty successful years, the entirety of the brand is relaunching itself as a unif ied VIA. Unif ied by the quality, attention to detail and level of workmanship. Within VIA various collections signify different styles and designs, but they are all stamped with VIA, the unif ied mark of superior craftmanship.

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HANDBAG BEAUTIFUL FOR YEARS When in use • Keep liquids, such as make-up and creams in a separate bag inside your handbag to avoid spillage on the lining.

• Always put pens in a penholder and be careful with a pen in your hand. Ink marks generally don’t come out, so it is best to avoid them all together.

• When placing your bag in the car, ensure that it is in a secure place. You don’t want it to fall over and roll around as it causes scuff marks and can potentially damage the leather.

• Avoid placing handbags on the floor – even though good bags mostly have studs protecting the bottom, the floor remains an unf riendly place for handbags, as it may be stood on or kicked over.

Storage • Store your handbags in the dust bags they originally came with. This protects the leather f rom being scuffed and also protects it f rom light that may cause discolouring over time. Patent leather bags can rub colour off on each other, and when kept in the dust bag, that won’t happen.

• Keep bags stuffed in order to preserve its shape, as bags can easily cave in and change shape when empty. Use plain, soft, undyed paper such as tissue paper if you no longer have the original stuff ing.

• Don’t hang bags on hooks, as gradual wear and tear is caused on the handles and may even stretch the handles over time.

• Keep bags on a dedicated bag shelf. This is common practice for the storage of shoes and should be common practice for bags too. This ensures that bags are not squashed, getting scuffed or losing shape.

What to do when a handbag gets wet • Don’t panic! Some bags may go darker due to the water – if you follow the steps below, it should restore back to its original colour in most cases.

• Empty the contents of your bag and stuff it with paper in order to keep the shape.

• Put your bag in a dry place away f rom sunlight and leave it to dry naturally – depending on how wet your bag got, this may take a few days.

• DO NOT put your bag in the sun or expose it to heat such as hairdryers, ovens or microwaves.
