Foreword

It is with pleasure that I present to you the 2012 International Course Guide featuring the vast array of education and training opportunities available at NMIT in Melbourne, Australia. Innovative, practical programs are a key feature of our higher education and vocational education and training programs. NMIT has built its reputation by offering education programs that are the right mix of theory and practical experience. NMIT students study in modern facilities and have many opportunities to work with industry partners. Our graduates are work ready and employable with the right combination of knowledge and skills. NMIT has six campuses in the northern region of Melbourne including Preston, Collingwood, Epping, Fairfield, Greensborough and Heidelberg and a rural campus in Ararat. There are also six training centres including Northern Lodge - Eden Park, Northern Lodge - Yan Yean, Growling Frog Vineyard, Yarra Glen Racing Centre, NMIT Kyneton Park and the Northern AMEP Centre in Broadmeadows. With approximately 67,500 enrolments from both Australia and overseas, NMIT offers full-time and part-time study across seven faculties: Arts and Social Sciences, Building and Construction, Business, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Further Education and Hospitality, Tourism and Personal Services.

NMIT has an expanded range of educational programs with preapprenticeships, apprenticeships and traineeships programs and around 550 nationally accredited vocational education and training (VET) courses leading to advanced diploma and bachelor level qualifications. In 2012 NMIT will offer bachelor degrees in Accounting, Agriculture and Land Management, Aquaculture, Music, Music Industry, Early Years Studies, Education (Early Years), Equine Studies, Hospitality Management, Illustration, Viticulture and Winemaking, as well as Writing and Publishing. We also offer associate degrees in Accounting, Agriculture and Land Management, Early Years Studies, Equine Studies, Illustration, International Business, International Business Management, Music, Music Industry, Tertiary Studies, as well as Writing and Publishing, with more on the way. elbourne is one of the most exciting, cosmopolitan cities in the world. With nearly four million people living in the city, Melbourne is alive with interesting events including world class opera and musical productions, an international comedy festival and arts festivals. The most livable city in the world also has a full calendar of sporting events, playing host to the Australian Grand Prix, the Melbourne Cup – one of the world’s most prestigious horse races – and the tennis grand slam of the Asia Pacific, the Australian Open. Also located here is the newly built AAMI Park, home to A-League soccer team, Melbourne Victory. Situated on the Central Business District’s fringe is the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which is Australia’s spiritual home for the international and domestic cricket season in summer and Australian Rules football in winter. Providing a lifestyle for all tastes, Melbourne is the culinary capital of Australia, with thousands of restaurants and cafés to choose from. The city’s food is complemented by its great nightlife, with a host of nightclubs, live music venues and pubs in which to dance or catch up with friends.

This is a great time to visit some of the many beaches which are within easy reach of the CBD. June to August are cooler months when you can take to the ski fields, just a two to three hour drive away from Melbourne.

The card has been designed to provide opportunities for students who are new to Melbourne to participate in events and activities across the city’s top arts and cultural venues. The Culture Card allows you free entry into a number of attractions and events to showcase Melbourne’s vibrant social and cultural life, and is aimed at building your understanding and connection to one of the most livable cities in the world. Apartment/unit/house rental Real estate agents will rent unfurnished apartments, units and houses in most locations. Sharehouse Many students choose to share a house or apartment with other students or local residents as the most cost-effective option. Each person usually has their own bedroom to furnish, whilst the bathroom, kitchen and living room are shared.

A bond of up to four weeks rent is also required in a sharehouse arrangement. Cost is approximately AU$90–200 per week per room, depending on availability, location and condition.

Other accommodation options NMIT Student Services maintains a list of accommodation vacancies and other information about permanent, short term and emergency accommodation options. The service is provided free of charge to students. The accommodation is either close to or within easy access via public transport of NMIT campuses. Student Information Living in Melbourne Airport Reception

MIT can organise for you to be met at the airport and taken to your pre-arranged accommodation. This is a free service but must be pre-arranged with NMIT at least one week prior to your arrival in Australia. Confirmation is usually sent by the International Office via email.

Dependants

enerally, family members who intend to accompany you to Australia may be included in your application for a student visa and can be processed for visa entry at the same time. They must undergo a medical examination and hold health insurance, amongst other things. If your family members decide to come to Australia after you have arrived, they will have to apply for a visa separately. They may also require you to nominate them for entry.

Employment and Health

tudents must ensure their financial independence before coming to Australia. You may work in paid employment up to 20 hours per week during the semester, provided that work does not interfere with your studies. During semester breaks, there is no restriction on the amount of hours that student visa holders can work.

Living Costs

Websites such as www.seek.com.au and www.mycareer.com.au are useful tools to help you look for a job. It is a student visa condition that all international students take out Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the proposed duration of time they plan to remain in Australia on a student visa. Offer letters from NMIT will include information on the cost of OSHC. The International Office will organise OSHC for overseas students arriving in Melbourne, following payment of fees. MIT recommends that you have at least AU$2,500 on arrival in Melbourne to cover the cost of temporary accommodation, purchase extra clothing and initial set-up costs of permanent accommodation. These costs may include one monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rent, one monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bond, household goods, furniture, service connection fees, books, stationery and equipment. Additional meals, refreshments, transport, personal needs and entertainment may cost up to AU$130 per week. It is recommended that you budget for living costs to total at least AU$18,000 per year on top of your tuition fees and airfares.

MIT requires the successful completion of studies equivalent to Australian Year 12 education as the minimum level of entry into courses. Tuition Fees Tuition fees are to be paid in full prior to commencement of each semester. This means you can move to another TAFE institute (if they run the same course), and pick up where you left off without having to repeat any subjects. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENROLMENT REFUND POLICY Applicants are advised to ensure they understand NMIT’s refund policy. • Applications for refund should be made in writing on the ‘Application for Refund’ form available on request from the International Office. • Upon approval the International Office will make refunds in accordance with the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) regulations. • Tuition fees include a AU$300 administration fee, which is non-refundable and non-transferable in the case of a student withdrawing an application after being accepted. • If, after payment of fees a student withdraws an application and presents a completed Application for Refund Form the following will apply: • If written notice is received by NMIT more than 28 days before the commencing of the course a cancellation fee of 25% of the full semester fee will be deducted from fees received. • If written notice is received by NMIT up to 28 days but more than 14 days prior to the course commencing a cancellation fee of 35% of the full semester fee will be deducted from fees received. • If written notice is received by NMIT 14 days or less of the course commencing, no refund will be made. • Where a student has been denied a visa to study in Australia a full refund less the administration fee will be made on receipt of proof that a visa has been denied. • Where a student is granted Permanent Residency Visa Status before the start date of the semester, a full refund will be made of the fees paid for the following semester. • Where a student commences a semester as an international student and is granted Permanent Resident Visa Status during that semester, international student fees will apply for that semester. • Where a student is granted a deferral or suspension of studies after the semester has commenced, a transfer of the current semester’s tuition fees will be granted. • Where a student is paying for a package of courses, and pays a deposit, this deposit is non refundable. • Where NMIT is unable to deliver the course offered, a full refund will be made. • All refunds are made in Australian dollars or the foreign currency equivalent at the time and will be net of any handling fee charged by local representatives used by the student. • In the case of a student returning home any refund will only be made after the student ID card is returned and immigration notified. This agreement does not remove the right to take further action under Australia’s Consumer Protection Laws. TRANSFERS Transfer to another educational institution • Under Standard 7 of the ESOS Act it is not possible to transfer to another education institution for the duration of any preliminary course and/or the first 6 months of the principal course, without permission from NMIT. • Requests for transfer must be made to the International Office in writing and be accompanied by a letter of offer from the receiving institution. Evidence of exceptional and/or extenuating circumstances is also required. • If approved, any monies transferred will be in accordance with NMIT’s Refund Policy. Transfer to another course at NMIT • All applications to transfer to another course at NMIT should be made on the ‘Request for Internal Transfer’ form available at the International Office. • Transfers will be subject to availability of places in the desired course. • Transfers to other courses will be granted at the discretion of the International Office in consultation with the relevant teaching department. • Where a transfer is granted students must pay an administration fee of AU$200 plus any additional tuition fees applicable to the new course before starting the new course.
