THE HABITATS Partner: Joanne Lagazo
The Habitats creates a regeneration of this South Chicago neighborhood, which has been negatively impacted by the 1930’s redlining policies that destroyed the built fabric, widening the wealth gap, and leading to the destruction of biodiversity. By prioritizing the needs of both human and non-human inhabitants, The Habitats creates a more liveable environment that supports the block’s biodiversity and promotes education on the importance of this topic. The proposed block consists of a fabrication lab, bat research labs, educational center, community work spaces, and business centers. Throughout the block, the intertwining pathways provide a convenient way for people to move around, but also serve as a haven for outdoor creatures to thrive. With the addition of green spaces, butterfly gardens, water catchers, the block becomes a biodiverse oasis, promoting sustainability and community engagement through shared gardens and public spaces.
2nd Floor Plan Business
The bee wall is more than just a barrier, it’s a buzzing ecosystem. The bee hive inside is a beautiful reminder that architecture and nature can coexist in perfect harmony.
Tucked away in this cozy nook, kids can witness the magic of the gardens up close in this butterfly nook.

Fabrication Facilities
The cross-laminated timber members of the bat facade, provide shelter for these creatures, while they are also presented at a high level so passerbys do not interact directly with them.
THE CENTURY BUILDING DORMITORY The Century Building, designed by Holabird & Roche in 1915, is part of the Loop Retail Historic District in Chicago, IL. As a part of a comprehensive studio, the goal was to create a dormitory as part of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, using the Century Building and the adjacent open lot. The design caters to the students and faculty, while preserving and encapturing as much of the history of the Century Building as possible.

TERRA CAPTURE The Illinois Beach State Park is a part of the Zion Beach Ridge Plain, composed of several beach ridges and intervening swales. Many different plants and animals inhabit this land. The habitats of this 4,160-acre land range from dry-mesic sand prairie and savanna to fresh-water marsh to fore dune and beach. The Terra Capture is to be placed along the shore of Illinois Beach State Park. The Terra Capture’s curving plane mirrors the parabolic coastline of the site. The purpose of this device is to study erosion and how the dynamic movement of the lake water interacts with this static device. The curving planes allow erosion to speed up or slow down. The dynamic flow of the water traps sand behind the Terra Capture creating a disruption in the landscape. The sand builds up on the back side of the device and erodes on the lake side of the device. This could be further developed by studying how a larger Terra Capture device could change the coastline over a certain amount of time.

TASTE OF ZION The Taste of Zion is located along the shore of Illinois Beach State Park. This wine and cheese tasting space is inspired by the Terra Capture device from the first semester project. The Terra Capture was implemented along the shore as well to study the effects of erosion. The play with curves allows the erosion to speed up or slow down. This influenced where each program is located. By placing the rooms at various levels, some are uncovered and covered depending on the seasonal changes and lake water waves. The garden is semi-protected by two foundation walls on either side collecting much of the sand. The tasting room is open to the public for the majority of the year with a summer entrance when the sand is at its lowest level. The cellar is fully covered for the majority of the year which is the ideal setting to age cheese and wine.
