Yorktown Set Your GPS For A Place Where History, Fun, Shopping And Fine Dining Await On The Shores Of The York River

I

f you’re looking for a break in Coastal Virginia, set your GPS for Yorktown, where another world awaits. As you exit from 1-64 or pull onto the scenic Colonial Parkway, you enter a realm rich in history with an abundance of unique restaurants, boutiques and art galleries at Riverwalk Landing and in the historic village. The broad expanse of the York River provides a scenic backdrop for the fun and opportunities for adventures on the water.

I visit Yorktown regularly throughout the year. Here, I map out my ideal visit, starting on a summer Thursday. The best place to begin is The Gallery at York Hall for brochures, maps, and information and to check out the pottery, photography, quilts, watercolors and more. A bike rental from Patriot Tours and Provisions enables me to take a scenic tour and squeeze in some exercise.

I stroll to the nearby Watermen’s Museum that demonstrates the role Chesapeake Bay watermen played in the shaping of the nation. Outside, I pause to admire the reconstructed Yorktown Windmill. William Buckner built the windmill in 1711, and for nearly two centuries the mill provided most of the flour in York County and served as a guidepost on the York River. Inside I learn that watermen played a role in the defeat of the British at Yorktown in 1781 as they acted as pilots for the French fleet traveling the York River and other local waterways.

Yorktown Victory Center

Next stop is up the hill to the Yorktown Victory Center, which remains open as construction continues on its replacement, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, to open in late 2016. Outside, the Continental Army encampment gives me an opportunity to try on a military coat, visit soldiers’ tents and watch or even participate in wooden musket drills. I learn the numerous steps required to prepare to fire a battalion gun or mortar. Inside, my favorite exhibit is the rare broadside printing of the Declaration of Independence.

Back down the hill, the River Room adjacent to the Duke of York Hotel is another favorite dining venue for dinner. Fans of the one-time iconic Nick’s Seafood Pavilion come here for the creations from longtime Nick’s chef Jimmy Krikales. My favorite is the seafood shish kabob.

Outside, it’s an easy walk to the lawn with my beach chair to listen and dance to the sounds of Motown and beach music as part of the Thursday night summer concert series Shagging on The Riverwalk. These concerts, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., feature popular well-known regional groups such as The Rhondels and the Band of Oz. No time to get dinner or pack a picnic? No worries. Vendors from local restaurants offer selections from their menus.

“After the sun set, the ambience of the Christmas lights was nice. Yorktown is a beautiful location. The location on the water can’t be beat. It was absolutely gorgeous.”

Bruce and Mandy Pugh decided to get married while eating at one of their favorite restaurants—the Yorktown Pub. So getting married in Yorktown was an easy decision.

The Pughs were married in May 2012 at The Hornsby House Inn Bed and Breakfast.

“We were so excited that after the ceremony we could walk down the hill and visit the pub that started it all,” Mandy Pugh says.

“It was a magnificent end-of-May day, and everything was picture perfect,” she says. “We went back for our first anniversary, and we’re going back this May for our anniversary too.

We will always love Yorktown because of that special day.”

Yorktown offers a variety of choices for staying overnight. If I’m looking for a traditional hotel with a pool, the Duke of York Hotel on the waterfront fits the bill. There are several bed and breakfasts offering elegance and luxury: the Hornsby House B&B, the Marl Inn B&B and the York River Inn B&B. Yorktown’s Charming Battlefield Cottage offers privacy near the battlefield and well-known site of the Moore House.

First thing Friday, find me paddling a kayak from Patriot Tours and Provisions as the sun rises over the York River. Afterward, a muffin and coffee at Ben and Jerry’s and Green Mountain Coffee Café charges my batteries for the day.

Yorktown Battlefield

For another slice of history, the self-guided tour of Yorktown Battlefield takes me back to October 1781 siege and battle that turned the tide to victory in the Revolutionary War. I take the time for a guided ranger tour of the battlefield. For kids, the junior ranger program offers the opportunity to complete assignments, learn history and earn a patch. Inside, I always appreciate the trip back in time while standing under George Washington’s tent.

On Ballard Street, I stop by Black Dog Gallery to look at fine art, maps and more and then to Nancy Thomas Gallery for original art, wood and metal designs by this internationally known artist. Next up: antiquing at Redcoat Antiques on Alexander Hamilton Boulevard and Swan Tavern Antiques on Main Street. Lunchtime finds me heading down the hill to The Beach Delly where I try the shrimp burger that other diners rave about.

After lunch, I stop at the Claire Murray Outlet Store and look at rugs and other home accessories, then to Auntie M’s American Cottage for folk art or maybe even a workshop, and then on to Viccellio Goldsmith to see and purchase the latest creations by master goldsmith J. Henry “Hank” Viccellio. The Yorktown Onion is my go-to place for one-of-a kind gifts followed

by River Fruit Tropical Wines for the imbibers on my gift list.

aboard Let’s Go Sail and cruise a skippered sailboat on the York River. I stop by Alexander’s Photography to check on rates for a family photo on the riverfront. Then it’s back on the water for sightseeing aboard York River Charters.

Water Street Grille is the perfect venue for a late supper. I already know what to order.

On a recent visit, I dined on tomato-basilcrab soup, fish tacos and amazing avocado fries. Just when I thought tomato-basil soup couldn’t be improved, Water Street Grille added crab to it. My friend, confident in the knowledge that I was the designated driver that night, enjoyed a sampling of craft brews on tap. We both appreciated live music by Exit 231, named after one of the Williamsburg exits on I-64. As I savor my favorite items, I make plans to return for one of the many other events including oyster roasts and regular live music.

Saturday morning, Yorktown Market Days and the aromas of fresh food entice me, and I sample pastries from one of the vendors as I browse the seasonal fruits, vegetables, seafood, beef, poultry, pork, eggs, cheese, coffee, jams and jellies, peanuts, cut flowers, art and more while listening to live music.

After the market, I head out for a late morning pirate adventure cruise on the Pirate Ship Serenity, where kids can watch them set the sails and steer the ship and then participate in Captain Mayhem’s School of Piracy.

For lunch, longtime waterfront staple Yorktown Pub offers delicious seafood—my favorite is the fried seafood platter. I mark my calendar to return for the live music on weekend nights. Friday afternoon, I walk off those meals along the water and up and down the hills, followed by a guided Segway tour with Patriot Tours and Provisions.

My visit isn’t complete without a meal at Riverwalk Restaurant—tapas followed by a salad with the restaurant’s signature Green Goddess dressing, crabcakes and corn on the cob. As the day and my visit draws to a close, find me on a sunset cruise aboard the Schooner Alliance, where passengers can help sail the boat or just marvel at the view and watch for dolphins, birds and other marine life—the perfect ending to a delightful visit. n

Kicks off May 10

orktown’s Market Days kicks off May 10 with a Fitness Market aimed at helping you live a healthier lifestyle with tips, giveaways and free classes. Locally grown, caught and produced food is the star attraction.

Market Days, a signature Yorktown event, includes fresh seafood, seasonal fruits and vegetables, eggs, poultry, beef and pork, fresh breads and other baked goods, cheese, peanuts, coffee, jams and jellies, dipping oils and meat rubs—along with live music and quality art. Hours are 8 a.m. to noon.

This year, there will be more gluten free items than ever, says market manager Don Willis. Saudé Creek Vineyards joins New Kent Winery and Vineyards this year, alternating weeks, Willis says. Representatives from The Virginia Chefs’ Association will be at select markets with a variety of breads. Also new will be food trailers with crab chowder, summer corn chowder and other seasonal soups, tomato basil soup, hummus and bruschetta, Willis says.

The market, a partnership between York County and the Riverwalk Landing Business Association, has grown tremendously since opening in 2007, with two markets a month from June to September, tourism director Kristi Olsen says.

Market Days begins in May and continues weekly through Sept. 27. Monthly markets continue in October, November and December with extended hours. To date this year, 45 food vendors have signed up along with a dozen artists and craftsmen, Willis says.

“The first year we had 16 vendors and we had to beg them to come,” Willis says.

“Now we have a waiting list. It’s been a great market with strong community support, excellent vendors in wonderful location.”
