the official beverage of summer Three cheers to our favorite season with fun and flavorful imbibes

Summer is a magical time that is with us throughout our lives.

From days doing nothing between school years as a child to days doing nothing while on vacation from work as an adult, summer is a season of rest and relaxation.

We love sitting outside drinking in the sun—and later the millions of stars illuminating a dusky twilight sky—while drinking some adult libations.

Gone are the days of whirring up cocktails with mixes filled with artificial flavors and colors. Mixed drinks don’t need to be work, but they do need to be fresh—and unique.

Here we offer four of our favorite imbibes—quick and easy, fun and flavorful—to enjoy throughout the summer—perhaps sitting out on the dock and watching the comings-and-goings on Lake Anna, under the sun and under the stars.

Rad Red Watermelon Cocktail Ingredients 2 cups cubed and seeded watermelon 2 ounces vodka 1 ounce melon liqueur, such as Midori 2 tablespoons lime juice (juice of 1/2 lime, approximately) 1 cup ice Watermelon wedge Method

Add watermelon, vodka, melon liqueur, lime juice and ice in a blender and blend until smooth.

Pour into glass and garnish with a small wedge of watermelon.

Yields 1 serving

Shandygaff Ingredients 4 ounces limoncello 6 tablespoons lemon juice (juice of 2 lemons, approximately) 2 pints Belgian wheat beer 2 pints ginger ale 4 orange slices METHOD

In a large pitcher, add limoncello, lemon juice, ale and ginger ale and stir. Pour into glasses filled with several ice cubes. Garnish each glass with an orange slice.

Yields 4 servings

Bourbon Slush

Ingredients 4 cups bourbon 4 cups lemonade 4 cups sweet iced tea 1 cup ginger ale

Strawberry Mimosa

Strawberry Coulis Ingredients 1 cup fresh strawberries, caps removed 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice

METHOD

Mimosa Ingredients 8 tablespoons fresh orange juice (juice of 2 oranges, approximately) 1 bottle (750 mL) sparkling wine Whole fresh strawberries for garnish METHOD Make the strawberry coulis: combine

the strawberries, sugar and lemon juice in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring continually, for about 5 minutes.

Puree the strawberries in a blender until smooth, and then strain or press contents through a fine sieve. Chill at least 2 hours before use; will keep in refrigerator up to one week.

Make the mimosa: spoon 2 tablespoons of strawberry coulis and 1 tablespoon of orange juice into each champagne flute. Top off with the sparkling wine. Garnish with the fresh strawberries, either sliced and dropped into the glass, cut and placed on the glass rim or whole on cocktail skewers.

Yields 8 servings

Combine the bourbon, lemonade and tea in a 9x13x2-inch baking dish.

Freeze overnight.

Remove the frozen mixture from the freezer 30 minutes before serving.

Break up the mixture slightly and transfer to a punch bowl. Add the ginger ale. Stir until a slushy consistency is reached and serve immediately.

y far one of the most unique memorials from the Civil War stands in a family cemetery on the Ellwood Plantation, a small plantation a mile away from the field hospital where Lieutenant General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson was treated for a shattered left arm. It was May 2, 1863, and the general had just led a successful battle against union forces in Chancellorsville, Va., when the unthinkable happened—confusion led to shots being fired among his own troops, and Jackson became the accidental victim of an attack by his own men. He was rushed to a field hospital where the arm was amputated by Dr. Hunter H. McGuire.

After the amputation, Jackson was taken to Fairfield Plantation near Guinea Station, where he was to take a train to Richmond after recovering from his surgery. Jackson’s

doctors expected him to survive his injuries, but he died of pneumonia eight days later in the farm office of the plantation. Sometime during all the chaos, Jackson’s Second Corps chaplain Reverend Beverley Tucker Lacy visited the hospital where Jackson had been treated and found that the amputated left arm was still there. The reverend decided to take the limb with him to his brother’s home, Ellwood Plantation, a mile away from the hospital. He buried Jackson’s arm in the family cemetery, and it was never reunited with the rest of Jackson’s remains, which are buried in Lexington. In 1903, Lieutenant James Power Smith marked the plot housing Jackson’s arm with a granite monument. In 1921, General Smedley Butler had the arm dug up to confirm it was really buried there, and his men reburied it and marked the gravesite with a bronze plaque on top of the existing monument.

Although Jackson’s body was taken back to Lexington for burial, the farm office at Fairfield where Jackson passed away is now

a dedicated Stonewall Jackson Shrine. The main house on the plantation burned down after the war, but the office where the famous general drew his final breath remains an historic landmark that still contains 45 percent of the original fabric that was there at the time of Jackson’s visit. The chaplain, after burying Jackson’s arm at Ellwood, joined the general at Fairfield for two days where he held devotions with him in the farm office. Jackson’s wife and baby daughter came to visit Jackson on May 7. Fortunately the family got to spend a few days together before Jackson succumbed to the pneumonia. He is reported to have said on his last day, “It is the Lord’s Day; my wish is fulfilled. I have always desired to die on Sunday.” In his final moments, Jackson cried out, “Order A.P. Hill to prepare for action! Pass the infantry to the front rapidly!

Tell Major Hawks—” He left the command unfinished, instead uttering the last words: “Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees.”

overing an area of more than 9,000 acres, spreading across Louisa, Orange and Spotsylvania counties, stretching 17 miles from tip to tip and boasting more than 250 miles of shoreline, Lake Anna is a waterenthusiast’s dream, especially for anglers.

Lake Anna was created in 1972 when Virginia Electric and Power closed the dam gates on the North Anna River to provide cooling water for their North Anna Nuclear Power Station.

Virginia Power and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland

Fisheries immediately stocked the newly formed waterway with a variety of game and feed fish to help Lake Anna create a selfsustaining population of aquatic life.

Biological surveys conducted between 1975 and 1985 revealed that approximately 40 different species of fish were making Lake Anna home including: American Eel, Black Crappie, Blueback Herring, Bluegill, Bluehead Chub, Bluespotted Sunfish, Brown Catfish, Creek Chubsucker, Chain Pickerel, Channel Catfish, Common Carp, Eastern Mudminnow, Gizzard Shad, Golden

In 1994, sterile Grass Carp were also introduced to help control an outbreak of Hydrilla verticillate, an exotic aquatic weed that was threatening to take over.

he news of a world-class resort heading to Lake Anna has been making waves over the past year. With the addition of the Lake Anna Resort to the scene, there has been a buzz about what will be included when the construction is completed. The first phase of the Lake Anna Resort will include residential condo units, with the first building already reserved to enthusiastic buyers looking forward to enjoying waterfront residences at the development, which will be followed by a resort hotel, spa, restaurants, public beach and boat launch, gift shops, Visitor Center and other amenities that will serve both the residents of the condos and Louisa County residents as a whole, in addition to all public visitors to our Resort from around the world.

The goal is to have a professional resort hotel company to become involved in the project and use their experience and financial backing to bring visitors to Lake Anna not only during the summer peak season but throughout the calendar year with facilities that will bring seminars, conferences, corporate retreats, classes, performances and many more activities during all four seasons.

The Resort plans to make the site ready for the hospitality management company to choose the perfect entrepreneur to occupy the commercial space. The Lake Anna Resort will give the leasing rights to many outdoor areas, including the beach and boat launch and event rights to the management company that will operate and maintain the property, including but not limited to the water, sewer and landscaping of the development.

The comprehensive plan for Louisa states that this property is within the Lake Anna Designated Growth Area where Mixed Use 30

meets Community Service, and The Resort intends to fulfill all of these goals for Louisa. The developers feel this is the best way to bring these services that are strongly needed by both Lake Anna and Louisa County and will fulfill the intended purpose of the Planned Unit Development, as outlined by the Louisa County Comprehensive Plan. The project is currently in the rezoning phase and while the development team is excited to get building underway, the rezoning process is an important step to complete before the start date. The ground breaking will take place shortly after the rezone is complete.

The news of a large scale hotel on the horizon is welcomed news to Lake Anna, which is home to several small lodging facilities, and a resource of this size will allow events such as fishing tournaments and competitions to be held on the lake and accommodate groups that will bring exciting events to Lake Anna on a more regular basis.

The Resort itself will also focus on creating and cultivating an atmosphere of fun events throughout the year. An on-staff social director will keep the calendar full with an array of happenings that will satisfy groups of all ages with art classes, dance lessons, boat training, swimming lessons, shows, concerts and more to allow those at Lake Anna to enjoy their entertainment at Lake Anna.

The possibilities are endless and supporters of the Lake Anna Resort are excited to see the slate of events once the commercial building is complete.

dock or boathouse is an extension of your lakefront property, not only providing you with a place to safely pull, secure and store your boat(s) out of the water but also to provide you with a way to have access to the water for swimming, fishing or just enjoying the afternoon sun. The design can range from a simple onestory structure to a more complex two-story option that provides a host of amenities.

Before you begin any dock or boat house project, it’s a good idea to make sure you understand all of the potential permits that might be necessary from each individual county that serves Lake Anna, as well as any restrictions the Commonwealth of Virginia may impose.

As a general guideline, Dominion Power has design standards that ensure safe navigation into cove areas, as well as the size of residential structures allowed based on the amount of your shoreline frontage. Those standards are as follows: For structures built on coves, water access entrances and travel-ways into coves must be at least 30 feet, until 38

the cove reaches a width of 90 feet or less. Structures shall not protrude more than one third of the distance across a cove, to a maximum of 150 feet. As for the size of structures allowable: 0–54 linear feet of waterfront = no slip or piers* 55–99 feet of waterfront = 1,500 square feet 100–300 feet of waterfront = 2,000 square feet More than 300 feet of waterfront = 3,000 square feet *Parcels in existence prior to April 2, 2007 shall be limited to no more than 750 square feet.

In addition, the maximum height of structures on land within the Dominion easement in all zoning districts is 20 feet for flat roofs and 28 feet for pitched roofs, as measured from the lowest finished grade. Weathervanes and telecommunication antennas do not count against the structure’s height.

impact on the lake is ideal. There are several quality builders in the area that can help you make your dream boathouse a reality.

So now that you have a general idea of the size of the structure you can build, the rest is completely up to your imagination and the skill of your contractor or designer.

So what do you need to keep in mind while you’re designing your boathouse? The first part of that equation depends on the type and size of boat(s) you’ll be docking and storing there. Will you primarily be storing canoes and kayaks, waverunners, a small bass boat, a larger power boat or a “party barge” (pontoon boat)?

Will your boat be winched out of the water and hung by a sling, or would you prefer to use a marine railway lift system? Do you want a boathouse with a “garage” door that opens to the water, or do you want an open design?

The next part of the equation is the kind of support structure that will be used for the foundation of your structure. Options include what’s known as a crib, where an underwater foundation of wooden boxes filled with ballast rocks creates the building platform. The next option is building on steel “stilts” that are driven into the lakebed and secured using horizontal steel beams above the water. The last option is a floating boathouse that rises and falls with the height of the lake and is securely anchored to the shore.Your contractor can discuss the pros and cons of each, depending on the size and shape of the structure you want to put on the foundation.

Finally, think of the design of the structure itself. Do you want an open dock design where your boat can pull in to one side or the other, or do you want the boatlift to be in the middle so people can enter and exit the boat from either side? Do you want a two-story structure with an open sun deck/diving platform off the top of the boathouse, or do you want an enclosed space where you can create a secondary residence where guests can stay?

Other amenities you may want to consider include adding lighting that not only provides a path to your boat house in the dark but also allows for setting a romantic mood; a tiki bar with outdoor appliances for keeping drinks cold and preparing light meals; a waterslide from

the stop of the structure; or maybe a fish-cleaning station with a running water option so you can prep the catch of the day and clean up with a quick spray of the hose.

Take a look at other boathouses on the lake and keep notes about what you like and don’t like. Conduct online searches for contractors who build boathouses—not just in this area but all across the United States—and see what they offer by way of design features and amenities. Keep a folder of your notes and photos of structures you like so you can refer back to them when designing your own boathouse.

Also keep in mind the details of the materials you’ll be using, especially if you are designing a second-story guesthouse as part of the overall design. Keep in mind what you’d like to use as flooring and what kind of decorations you’d like to have. Will the space be a single room or will it have separate sleeping quarters or a kitchenette? Will there be a sewerage line that runs to your septic system so you can include a bathroom and other grey-water run off? What about the outside of the structure? What kind of shingles do you want? What kind of design elements will you use to set your boathouse apart?

Depending on how complex you’d like your boathouse to be, the design process can be very similar to building a new house—the possibilities are nearly endless. Be sure to bring your folder with you when working with your designer/engineer to give them a sense of everything you want in your new home away from home—away from home.

Oakland Heights Farm in Gordonsville is a great place to learn to ride, extend your expertise, or enjoy a guided trail ride.

If history is your thing, you’ll find plenty of it in Orange County.

Not far from the vineyards (which are all within three miles of each other) is Montpelier, the lifelong home of President James Madison, who is considered to be the Father of our Constitution and the architect of the Bill of Rights. Learn more about Madison and his wife, Dolley, and tour the 2,650 acres of gardens, walking trails, cemeteries and the Landmark Forest (montpelier.org, 540-672-2728 x 140).

Just a little ways down the road from Montpelier is another stately home called Ellwood Manor. Set on a hill overlooking Wilderness Battlefield, this circa 1790 plantation served as a one-time headquarters for the Union Army during the American Civil War. The family cemetery on the premises has the dubious distinction of being the burial site for General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson’s amputated arm, which he lost after being accidentally shot by his own troops in a battle fought nearby in 1863 (fowb.org, 540-786-2880).

From Ellwood Manor you can take a tour of the Wilderness Battlefield where the Battle of the Wilderness was fought May 5–7, 1864. This was the first battle between Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant of the Union Army and General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate Army where nearly 30,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or captured.

If you’d rather indulge in some history that is a little less somber, check out the Harley Davidson Museum at Waugh Enterprises in the town of Orange. You’ll find vintage bikes and memorabilia, as well as a gift shop where you’ll find everything from collectibles and jewelry to wearables and riding gear (waughhd.com, 540-672-5550).

While in Orange, James Madison’s hometown, visit the Historical District where you’ll find the oldest public, religious and commercial structures in town. Take an easy stroll around, starting your visit at the Visitors Center, located at the historic Train Station. Pick up a Walking Tour brochure so you won’t miss any of the sites, including the James Madison Museum, where you can find out why Thomas Jefferson referred to James Madison as “the best farmer in the world,” in the nation’s first museum to fully commemorate the fourth president of the United States (thejamesmadisonmuseum.org, 540-672-1776).

Another short drive from Orange will take you to the Germanna Visitors Center, Library and Memorial Garden in Locust Grove.

The Memorial Foundation of the Germanna Colonies of Virginia was chartered in 1956 to preserve the heritage of the earliest organized settlements of Germans in colonial Virginia in 1714 and 1717. The site of the Visitors Center is located close to the original Germanna Fort, where German immigrants went on to play important roles in the settlement and development of surrounding Virginia Counties (germanna.org, 540-423-1700).

If you’re looking for more recreational diversions, Meadows Farms Golf Course in Locust Grove features a 27-hole course that includes an 841-yard, par six hole that is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as “The Longest Hole in the United States.”

Elk Island Winery

They take a small-batch wine approach, offering a couple handfuls of wines.

Unique to their winery are Terroirier White and Terroirier Red. Each wine is a blend and produced in honor of the couple’s pets, terriers Oscar, Macaroni and Angus. A portion of each sale of these wines is donated to Maryland Westie Rescue, Potomac Cairn Terrier Rescue and Yorkie Rescue.

ake Anna offers many fishing opportunities for anglers who want to pursue their favorite species, whether it be largemouth bass, striper, crappie, catfish, bluegill or white and yellow perch. Last year saugeyes were stocked into the lake, and this year hybrid striped bass will be introduced as well. The public side (9600 acres) of the lake is accessible by boat through numerous marinas and Lake Anna State Park, and fishing from the bank is permitted at the third dike and on the miles of shoreline that surround the state park. The private (hot) side of the lake is not accessible to the public; it is reserved for land owners and their guests. The lake is known for renowned striper and largemouth fishing as well as an excellent crappie fishery. Here are popular ways to catch fish on Lake Anna: Largemouth Bass: Numerous citation bass [22 inches or 8 pounds] are caught each year, primarily in the months of February through May, fairly shallow.

Use soft plastics, spinner baits and shallow running crank baits targeting shallow structures such as docks, stumps, willow grass, rocks and rip rap. After the fish spawn they pull out to deeper haunts in 12 to 25 feet of water, where they hold on brush piles, ledges, rock outcroppings and humps where baits like deep diving crank baits, heavy weighted worms, jigging spoons and drop-shot rigs will be productive. In low light conditions, top water chuggars and spook type baits will call them out of the depths for explosive strikes. Anglers looking to get away from the crowds and the boat traffic may want to consider fishing during the summer nights. The bass fishery is continuously getting better, according to John Odenkirk of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fishery (VDGIF). The last two years of sampling have produced new catch rate records and growth should continue into 2014.

Striped Bass: Striper fishing has become more popular with anglers, mainly due to the successful stockings by the VDGIF. Odenkirk reports in their latest publication, “Fishing success for striped bass in 2014 should be excellent, as three strong, consecutive stocking years [2010–2012] fully recruit to the fishery,

and the 2005 year class provides added trophy potential.” Fishing for stripers can be enjoyed year-round, and creel limits are the best in the state. An angler can keep four stripers per day over 20 inches.

It is not uncommon for anglers to catch up to 50 stripers a day, especially in the month of June. Techniques for catching stripers vary due to the water temperature.

When the water temperatures are below 65 degrees, stripers feed in the upper water column in depths less than 20 feet deep. More and more anglers are converting to using live bait pulled on planner boards, which can cover an area of 60 yards wide using up to 12 rods at a time. Artificial baits like sassy shads, sea shads, shad assassins and top water baits also work well when the fish are shallow.

The fish are spread out over the entire lake in the cooler months but retreat to the depths when the water gets warmer.

Once the water temperatures exceed 70 degrees the stripers move to 25–45 foot flats and congregate in large schools. They can be easily identified on a good depth finder and can be caught trolling artificial baits and jigging spoons. Sometimes early or late in the day they will chase bait to the surface where acres of stripers will blow shad clean out of the water. Live bait rigged on down lines in the summer is by far the most productive method of catching boat loads of stripers.

Crappie: Many anglers pursue this delicious fish and fill their freezers up in the spring for the year. Docks and shallow brush hold schools of fish and can be caught on small and medium minnows as well as small jigs.

Catfish: These fish are very plentiful and can be caught any time of the year in depths of 10 to 30 feet.

Bluegills: They spawn in June and are a blast to catch on fly rods. Bluegills, along with perch, are small fish but very sweet and tasty to eat.

Lake Anna has so many fishing opportunities for everyone to get out and enjoy the lake. If you don’t want to fish from shore or your dock, rent a boat, use yours or hire a guide to show you how it is done. Fishing is a great family experience and can give you the memory of a lifetime.

T

here are over 40 different species of fish in Lake Anna, but the true stars are the largemouth bass, striped bass, pan fish (crappie, bluegill and sunfish), catfish, walleye and perch. If you’re interested in hooking into one of these delectable denizens, there are a number of guides who know the lake and the fish migration patterns well (depending on the season and the temperature of the water), in addition to the types of lures that produce the best results. Of course you can always try your luck casting or trolling from a boat or just hanging out with a cane pole from the shoreline. With over 9,600 acres of land and more than 200 miles of shoreline to choose from, there’s room for everyone to get in on the action.

And with the amazingly abundant number of fish in Lake Anna, you’re bound to come home with a stringer full of something. Of course, catching the fish is only half the fun. The other half is coming up with tasty and unique ways to serve your catch to eager family and friends.

You can make an easy marinade of Italian dressing or Greek vinaigrette and grill fillets (skin side down) or bake larger fish whole (maybe even with a nice crabmeat stuffing). You can fry or sear smaller fillets the traditional way in flour and butter. Or you can use your fillets as an ingredient in some other delicious mix. Following are a few recipes to help you enjoy the fruits of your labors.

Largemouth Bass Tacos 6 largemouth bass fillets, skin and lateral line removed, cut into 3x1-inch strips 1 large egg, separated 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 cup beer 1 cup crema Mexicana* 2 teaspoons chipotles in adobo, chopped* 4 cups plus 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 6 ounces fresh chorizo sausage 12 corn tortillas 2 limes 2 cups green or red cabbage, finely shredded Salt to taste Prepared salsa • Mix egg yolk, flour, salt, pepper and beer together until you have a pancake-like batter. Refrigerate until ready to use (can be made up to 24 hours in advance).

• Combine crema Mexicana and chipotles in adobo into a food processor and pulse until smooth and pinkish.

Asian Ginger Catfish 1 cup chicken broth 1 tablespoon fresh ginger root, minced 1 tablespoon garlic, minced 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 1/4 pounds thin catfish fillets 6 large white mushrooms, sliced 1/4 cup sliced green onions 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro (optional) • Put chicken broth, ginger and garlic in a large pot with a lid. Bring the broth to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer three to five minutes.

• Stir soy sauce into broth mix and add catfish fillets. Spoon broth over the fillets, then place cover on pot and bring mixture back to a boil for three minutes. Add mushrooms, cover and cook until the fish loses pinkness and begins to flake (about three minutes more). Sprinkle green onion over the fillets, cover and cook another 30 seconds. Garnish with cilantro and serve.

Pan Fish Parmesan 1/4 cup butter, melted 1/2 cup dry breadcrumbs 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, minced 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon drive basil 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 pound bluegill or crappie fillets • Place melted butter in shallow bowl.

Place breadcrumbs, cheese and seasonings in a separate shallow bowl.

Dip fish fillets in butter, then coat with seasoned crumb mixture.

• Place breaded fillets in a greased 15x10x1-inch baking pan and bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until fish flakes easily with a fork.

• Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in skillet over medium heat. Slice the chorizo lengthwise, peel off skin and chop. Cook until crisp, using a wooden spoon to break meat into small pieces (about five minutes). Drain and set aside.

• In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the oil to 350 degrees. While it’s heating, beat the reserved egg white until stiff and fold it into the egg, flour and beer batter. Dip the bass strips into the batter and fry until golden brown.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and place tortillas wrapped in aluminum foil until soft and warm.

• To serve, place two or three pieces of fish on a warm tortilla, squeeze lime juice on them, add a spoonful of chorizo bits and add cabbage. Top with a dollop of crema and a dollop of salsa. Serve warm. *Crema Mexicana and chipotles in adobo are available at most Latino markets. Many grocery stores stock crema media, a slightly sweeter version. If using this, add a teaspoon of salt to offset the sweetness.

Walleye Cakes 1 cup cornflake crumbs 1 cup dry breadcrumbs 3 tablspoons all-purpose flour 18 ounces skinless, boneless walleye fillets 8 baby carrots, finely chopped 1 zucchini, finely chopped 2 small onions, finely chopped 1 tablespoon garlic, minced 2 large eggs, beaten 1 teaspoon dry mustard 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons butter Ground black pepper to taste • Combine cornflake crumbs, bread crumbs and flour in shallow dish. Set aside. Grind or finely chop walleye fillets and place into mixing bowl. Add carrots, zucchini, onions, garlic and eggs. Season with dry mustard, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Mix with your hands until all ingredients are evenly combined.

• Form the walleye mixture into small cakes, about 3/4-inches thick, and press into the crumb mixture. Set the cakes onto a baking sheet in a single layer.

• Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add walleye cakes and cook in batches until firm and golden brown on each side (about eight minutes per side).

DATEBOOK LAKE ANNA EVENTS 2014 Each summer, one of the most exciting events will take place over Lake Anna. The Lake Anna Civic Association traditionally raises donations throughout the year to cover the expenses of a dazzling fireworks display at Lake Anna.

The night of the show, you’ll see many boats floating together on the lake, near Dike Two. This year’s fireworks display will take place on Saturday, July 5th starting at approximately 9:15 p.m. For updated information, make sure to check the Lake Anna Guide Facebook for news. There are lots of great spots throughout the lake to watch, and it’s a great time to come together with friends and neighbors and enjoy the summer night and celebrate America.

The show is produced by Zambelli Fireworks, and this 19th annual choreographed event will draw viewers from all over the region. The Lake Anna Civic Association counts on donations from the residents and visitors of Lake Anna to keep the show free for the public. If you’re more into live music, you’ll need to purchase tickets to the 31st Annual Mineral Bluegrass Festival in Walton Park. The three-day festival takes place on July 17–19th and features national acts on the bluegrass circuit. Each year, the down-home sounds entertain crowds in Mineral, making the event one of the largest on the East Coast.

The 4th Annual Senator Tom Garrett Best of Lake Anna Awards will be held this fall, hosted by the Lake Anna Guide, and has become a wonderful event for the businessminded crowd at the lake. Local businesses and individuals have been honored with awards for specific categories, including Business Person of the Year and Best Customer Service, as well as awards given by the editors to honorees chosen for outstanding service or achievement in the past year. The soiree is a great chance for an elegant evening to celebrate the year in business with fellow colleagues.

Since the first Earlyhouse Charity Chili Cook-off in 2004, more than $50,000 has been raised for the National Kidney Foundation and The Virginia Transplant Center, thanks to the generous sponsors and attendees who support the cause each year. The National Capital Boat Show, often referred to as the Chantilly Boat Show, is held every year at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly. The show draws boat dealers and boating-related products and services annually for one of the most well-attended boat shows in the country. The convenient location draws vendors and crowds from Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Choose from the biggest selection of boats on sale at unbeatable prices. Power boats, fishing boats, pontoons, runabouts, deck boats and personal watercraft are on display, and you can shop and compare dozens of dealers and hundreds of boats at one time, in one place.

Boat shows all over the state of Virginia are great places to find that special deal on a boat or boating supplies that you are looking for. Dealers are a lot more open minded and eager to sell boats rather than having to travel back home with them. Both Chantilly and Fredericksburg were buzzing with excited attendees who traveled from several states to get last year’s models at a discount or get the first chance to see new models. Boat shows are a wonderful place teeming with everyone who enjoys boating and all of the fun that comes along with it.

The Fredericksburg Boat Show is the closest major boat show to the Lake Anna area, which makes this a must for both Lake Anna boating-related businesses and the avid boater looking for a new purchase or simply checking out the latest offerings from the boat manufacturers in the area. The Fredericksburg Expo Center is a large, open space and during the show is filled to the brim with amazing boating models and accessories, sure to please any boating enthusiast.

The source of many of Lake Anna’s greatest events is the Lake Anna Visitor Center, located at 208 Lake Front Dr. (at the 208 Bridge). In recent years, the organization has held wonderful events including the Lake Anna Wine Festival and the Lake Anna Christmas Tree Lighting with great success. So successful, in fact, that the events have grown faster than anyone could imagine. With limited locations in the area capable of handling the crowds that have flocked to these events, plans for future events are temporarily on hold for the immediate future until the site at the Lake Anna Resort is complete and able to comfortably handle the events and the attendees who enjoy them. With a goal to restart these great events in 2015, the public will once again be able to enjoy the quality level they have come to expect from this organization.

Use a waterproof sun block with an SPF of at least 30.

(Dermatologists recommend the daily use of sunscreen to prevent skin damage, early aging and skin cancer.)

Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside. Pay special attention to the nose, ears, shoulders, tops of the feet and collarbone.

Reapply sunscreen often—at least every two hours.

And remember to reapply after swimming or excessive sweating.

Try to get some shade sometime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is when UV rays are the strongest and can cause the most damage. Sit under an umbrella or go inside to grab some lunch to give your skin a break.

Don’t forget about your lips! They are very prone to burning, so apply lip balm with SPF often throughout the day.

Those with thin or thinning hair should pay serious attention to their scalp and tops of their heads. Either wear a hat or apply sunscreen to the scalp.

Longer locks can also be protected from the sun and salty water by applying conditioner before swimming, using a protective hair spray and by wearing a hat.

Wear UV protective sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and keep yourself from squinting, which causes deeper wrinkles if done excessively.

or years, everyone who visits Lake Anna has asked the question: “What is there to do at Lake Anna?” Lake Anna is finally gaining the commercial boom we’ve been expecting. We have compiled a list that encompasses all that Lake Anna has to offer.

The Lake Anna Visitor Center is now established at 208 Lake Front Dr. in Mineral, next to the Lake Anna Island complex. The Lake Anna Visitor Center contains information from local businesses, services and attractions with updated information available as it is ready. Open daily, it’s one of the best locations to learn more about Lake Anna or have your questions answered regarding the area.

The newest addition to Lake Anna is Fuzzy’s Lakeside Market in The Boardwalk on Lake Anna. Fuzzy’s serves ice cream, pizza, hippie rolls and breakfast and will also deliver to locals.

The development hosts the newest location for the Tim’s River Shore restaurant chain, titled Tim’s at Lake Anna. This establishment is a restaurant and crabhouse with a resort feel.

Indoor and outdoor waterfront seating are available for patrons hoping to enjoy waterside dining. The Boardwalk on Lake Anna also has a wakeboard and gift shop called Wake Edger’s Gear and Gifts.

The Island Shops at the 208 Bridge have two restaurants: Ally’s on the Lake, serving traditional American cuisine, and Asian Café, serving sushi and hibachi. The building also boasts a 24-hour gym named Fisher’s Fitness, the full-service hair salon, Chameleon & Co., Northern Virginia Title & Escrow (NVT&E), ArcTek Homes and Lake Anna Island Realty, making the Island a one-stop shop. The Lake Anna Yacht Club is also at the Island, with boat slips available for lease or purchase. The Lake Anna Information Center is located on the water next door in the wood-sided building with lake information and also hosts The Lake is Great Store & Gift Shop.

The crown jewel of attractions in the Lake Anna area would have to be the Lake Anna State Park. The park is 2,810 acres with more than 10 miles of lake frontage. The land in Lake Anna State Park used to be known as “Gold Hill” and contained the Goodwin Gold Mine. Gold was discovered first in 1829, then peaked in the 1880s. The Lake Anna State Park has rental cabins, camping, more than 15 miles of hiking trails, lakeshore picnicking, a guarded swimming beach, food concession stand, a bathhouse and a children’s fishing pond. The park is open daily, year-round. The parking lot is usually filled to capacity on popular weekends, such as Memorial Day and Labor Day, so get an early start if you have your heart set on the State Park.

Live Music If you’re interested in live music, Celebrate Virginia Live is an outdoor concert hall at the Pancho Villa Pavilion in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The venue hosts major music stars in a large outdoor space with various levels of seating and lawn space. This year’s schedule will include performances

by Montgomery Gentry on June 14th, Joe Nichols on July 18th and Thompson Square on July 19th. More acts will be announced to fill up the summer schedule and can be found online at the LakeAnnaGuide.com event calendar.

Historical Sites Lake Anna is steeped in Civil War and American history. There are a plethora of sites that contain tons of history. The most notable include the Battle of Chancellorsville in Spotsylvania, which involved more men and resulted in more casualties than any other engagement ever fought on Virginia soil, including the wounding of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Chancellorsville was called General R.E. Lee’s greatest victory.

The site of the May 1864 Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse gives 45-minute guided walking tours from the “Bloody Angle” where the battle lasted two weeks and included bitter hand-to-hand combat between the soldiers. This was a continuation of the Battle of the Wilderness nearby. These are just two of the battlefield areas easily accessible in our area. With many notable figures who were born and lived in our area, there is an extensive list of further historic sites that could fill this entire publication. Family Fun Kings Dominion is celebrating their 40th year in 2014! Now that you’re living on the lake, you may find it difficult to want to come inside, especially as the days get warmer. As you’re decorating, keep in mind that you can let your living space flow right out the door and onto your deck, patio or a serene oasis in your yard. With the right furniture and accessories you can create a room outside.

This is especially popular during the summertime and for people who have a pool. However, if you don’t have a pool, there are still ways to bring the indoors out. You can create an open-air living area. In addition to furniture, you can get outdoor bars, outdoor fireplaces, rugs and even beds.

Today’s furniture is not your grandparents’ metal, wood or plastic with cushions that must come inside each night.

Manufacturers are using recycled materials. One line is made from more than 90 percent recycled plastic bottles.

Cushions are more comfortable and stand up better to being outside. Manufacturers are bringing indoor comfort outside but with materials that can weather the elements.

Most cushion material can get rained on and will dry quickly.

Some are actually cushions surrounded by plastic and then surrounded by plastic material so the actual cushion never gets wet. You won’t have to bring them in until the season’s over.

For the furniture base, you’ll see a lot of aluminum, which stands up well to being rained on. Not so much for cast iron or wrought iron—it looks great at first but will rust after a couple of seasons. Several manufacturers carry cast aluminum, offering the look of cast iron along with the durability of aluminum.

What about when you need a little shielding from the sun as it glimmers off the lake? Umbrellas have gone beyond the pole that sticks in a hole in the table. Instead, the umbrella is cantilevered to hang over a table with a big curved arm so you can move it to where you want shade. Raising and lowering the umbrella is much easier too.

Wood outdoor furniture is still popular, but now the pieces often have a light coat of epoxy to protect the wood so it won’t turn gray as it weathers. This way you’ll get the look and feel of wood without the maintenance issues that arise with exposed wood.

When it’s time to turn in at night you can stay outside if you like. Several companies make outdoor beds, even with canopies for privacy for sleeping in the night air or for enjoying the sun during the day.

Civil War re-enactments are great way to take part in history.

History will come alive as children of all ages interact with Civil War-era characters and artisans, taste campfire living, experience family-friendly battles and learn period dancing and games.
