AUGUST Mystery Aircraft

Can you identify the aircraft shown Above? Email: JuLY Mystery Identified

Correctly identified by Wayne Clifton, Daryl Williams, and also Derek Clarke.

From Tim: This month the Antonov AN-8 transport. Looking similar to the more familiar AN-12 seen in the west during Soviet times except that it is smaller and only has two engine. Sort of Stalin era DC-3 (Li2 for purists) replacement. Most were made for the military and later some found service with shady cargo airlines.

Wanted Dead or Alive Yay! The flyouts aren't quite dead! Oh, they've been moribund for some years but there's hope for survival yet. Well, it was a start; Canada Day was a strange day weather-wise (so what's new?), with a sunny start at dawn followed by threatening low cloud and cool temperatures in the late morning then brilliant sunshine for the afternoon, at least in Victoria. Off we went into so-so VFR around noon; two Club C172s and two private aircraft carrying a total of eight people. We flew to CYCD for lunch at the Cottonwood Golf Club with a vague plan of going on elsewhere depending on the weather. Parking on Taxiway Golf (check the airport diagram in the CFS) makes for a short, pleasant walk to the clubhouse restaurant. The saving of $20 per hour in rental rate essentially paid for our meals. Hah! There is such a thing as a free lunch. The weather remained VFR with quite a bit of low scattered cloud, CBs and mist here and there. We, in the Club aircraft decided to return to YYJ. It was an enjoyable, if brief outing.

But let me add a suggestion here – you can fly to CYCD any day for lunch at the Cottonwood Golf Club. I was surprised that many club members were unaware of this delightful excursion. Sure, the flight is short, but I can guarantee that it’ll be different every time. And it’s pretty cool to be able to park your plane at a golf course. The Cotton Club restaurant has good prices, and a nice down-home menu. It’s a friendly, attractive place with a patio surrounded by rambling roses and a view of the lush fairways. Herewith a few photos to prove the point. If you haven’t been there, make the Cottonwood at CYCD a destination – you’ll be enchanted.

Note from VFC: Thanks to Eleanor for organizing the Canada Day Fly-Out. If anyone wants to take on the next Stat Holiday Fly-Out, please emal All aircraft participating in Stat Holiday Fly-Outs receive a $20/hour rental discount!
