The Heart of Valley Forge Christian College:
A
THE FORGE WAY
lmost anyone affiliated with Valley Forge Christian College (VFCC) knows we talk a lot about the institutional mission statement: To prepare individuals for a life of service and leadership in the church and in the world. And, when we speak of “preparation,” we frame everything around the model of Jesus in Luke 2:52, “And Jesus grew in wisdom (intellectually) and stature (physically), and in favor with God (spiritually) and in favor with men (socially).” These four Core Development Strategies identify everything we do inside and outside the classroom.
INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT God does not put a premium on ignorance. As someone said, “Christ died to take away our sins, not our minds.” If a college gives easy degrees to its graduates, they will be grateful today but they will despise their alma mater tomorrow. We tell our students “groans today; gratitude tomorrow.” As the sign in the West Point dormitory says, “The more you sweat in peace, the less you will bleed in war.” VFCC provides an antidote for intellectual mediocrity. If we are to become like Jesus, we must advance in wisdom: intellectually.
BY DR. DON MEYER
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Life is a marathon, not a hundred-yarddash. Jesus’ life on earth was rigorous. He was not shuttled from place to place in a limousine. He walked up to Jerusalem. He went out into the dessert. He traveled to Mount Caesarea in the north.
VFCC is a living laboratory for Christian experience. Someone said, “Very few people are sanctified in isolation.” We tell our students that if their Christianity does not work at VFCC, it will not work anywhere. Lee Iacocca said, “If you can’t get along with people, it is the kiss of death.”
Stewardship of our body, the temple of the Holy Spirit, includes the development of endurance, flexibility, strength, and also rest. VFCC provides an antidote for physical mediocrity. If we are to become like Jesus, we must advance in stature: physically.
SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT If anything captures the heart of VFCC it is the spiritual development of our students. If our students do not grow spiritually, either they or we or someone or something has gone drastically wrong. Here we all reach for God with what Morton Kelsey describes as “the questing spirit.” And, the central part of our community quest is our Chapel, the classroom of the Holy Spirit. There, five days a week, God transforms all of our lives. VFCC provides an antidote for spiritual mediocrity. If we are to become like Jesus, we must advance in favor with God: spiritually.
Leaders are needed who lead with Christian grace, dignity, respect and a courtesy for others. To join the VFCC community is to serve, not to rule. VFCC provides an antidote for social mediocrity. If we are to become like Jesus, we must advance in favor with God: socially. These four Core Development Strategies are at the heart of everything we do inside and outside the classroom. And, as they are carried out through our six Core Values, the VFCC mission is fulfilled. This publication illustrates these six Core Values: We Believe in God; We Prepare for the Future; We Care for Others; We Embrace Community; We Affirm the Dignity of All People; and We Serve with Creativity and Excellence.

NEW DEAF PASTORAL STUDIES PROGRAM LAUNCHED
T
he 2011-2012 academic year marked an important milestone for VFCC and the Deaf community worldwide. The Deaf Pastoral Studies Program was officially launched on March 2, 2012. Led by Dr. JoAnn Smith, this program is enabling Deaf graduates to prepare for a life of service and leadership by going into the world to spread the word of God in their Deaf communities.
OFFICE OF MARKETING
During the inaugural year, four Deaf students were enrolled in the program: Deann Dirkx, Bonnie Elliot, Ebby Johnson and Matthew Martin. Two of these students, Matthew Martin and Deann Dirkx, graduated in May. This year, the program has five Deaf students enrolled and we expect growth each year. The Deaf Pastoral Studies Program was made possible by two very special women, Dr. Lottie Riekehof and Linda Lee Martin. Dr. Riekehof, author of “Talk to the Deaf” and “The Joy of Signing,” has trained those working with the Deaf around the world. She is highly respected in the Deaf community. Martin, who lost her hearing at the age of 11 due to a life-threatening illness, has adopted 29 Deaf children. Utilizing the royalties from the books, Dr. Riekehof and Martin purchased housing in which to raise these children. Now that the children are grown, the sale of these properties serves as the genesis of an endowment at VFCC, which will resource this program.
OFFICE OF MARKETING
President Meyer stated, “We are profoundly grateful to these two women for their response to God’s direction to make this investment in the mission of Valley Forge Christian College. How grateful we also are that God has brought to us Dr. JoAnn Smith, a leading educator and pastor for over 35 years in the ministry to the Deaf. Without her capable leadership, this initiative could never have happened.”

73RD COMMENCEMENT
V
alley Forge Christian College (VFCC) celebrated its 73rd Annual Commencement Ceremony with 161 graduates on May 4, 2012. Architect Jack DeBartolo, Jr. FAIA, served as the keynote speaker, and VFCC’s Concert Choir performed special music. Over 1,200 family members and guests attended VFCC’s commencement events where President Meyer conferred degrees and distributed diplomas and certificates. Senior Class President, Joseph Melo, presented the scripture reading from 2 Peter 1:5-11. As is VFCC’s tradition, a tree was planted on campus in honor of the Class of 2012. Commencement speaker Jack DeBartolo, Jr. treated the graduating class to valuable advice and wisdom. In his commencement address, he encouraged the graduates to look for opportunities to spread the Word of God and to be committed to their careers. President Meyer, in his remarks to the Class of 2012, shared a favorite quote from a poem and encouraged students to spread their wings and fly. At the end of the ceremony, Rev. Tom Rees ’84, President of the VFCC Alumni Association, welcomed the graduating class of 2012 into the prestigious alumni family. Members of the Sigma Chi Pi Honor Society of the Assemblies of God Colleges were announced for 2012.

Court ’91 and Amy (Needham) ’90 Durkalski understand the beauty of giving back to their alma mater. They recently donated a generous gift to the VFCC General Scholarship Fund, an immense blessing to current and future students. The pastoral calling that the couple followed in college has shaped their hearts for the calling God has placed into their lives since. They are saddened, however, by the amount of debt so many students leave with after college. “There is immediately a contention between the voice and will of God and getting a job to pay off what they owe,” Court said. “That really crushes me.”
Court and Amy hope that their gift will make it more possible to help students come through VFCC without the burden of debt so they can be obedient to the voice of God. As Court said, “The future of the Church depends on it.” The Valley Forge Christian College family is extremely grateful for generous donors like Court and Amy, who unselfishly give to a Kingdom calling. Court is the CEO of Truline Industries and serves on the Board of Directors of Convoy of Hope. The couple resides in Ohio.

NCAA DIVISION III PROVISIONAL MEMBERSHIP
O
n July 25, 2012, VFCC was officially accepted into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III provisional membership process, effective September 1, 2012. In order to receive NCAA Division III provisional membership status, the College was required to fulfill a mandatory exploratory year that included meeting specific standards. These requirements included obtaining a lineup of ten sports,
five male and five female, as well as employing a Senior Women’s Administrator and an Athletic Trainer. The College must successfully complete four years of provisional membership before becoming eligible for the full Division III status in 2016. “This is a new chapter for our institution and Athletic Office,” said Director of Athletics, Jon Mack. “It not only puts us on a platform with other colleges in our area, but with Christian colleges all over the country.”
According to President Meyer, “Division III membership will greatly benefit the College as well as the players to reach a collective as well as individual optimum potential. A competitive athletic experience and invigorating academic experience will help student athletes achieve VFCC’s mission to prepare individuals for a life of service and leadership in the church and in the world.”

The Butlers’ vision is to see an Ability Center in every county across the United States
A CALLING FROM GOD
hen Joe ’04 and Jen Butler’s son, Micah, was two-and-a-half years old, a seizure ripped through his little body, causing brain damage with no guarantee that he would ever walk or talk in complete sentences again. That night, a tearful Joe gave his son back to the Lord, unknowingly opening his heart for a unique and powerful ministry. Soon, the Butlers began to notice that the church where they were serving wasn’t quite sure what to do with the developmentally delayed Micah. As Joe and Jen began to educate the volunteers and staff about their son, they soon became aware that God was calling them to reach out to other families like theirs, families who needed extra hope. The need was huge. More than 50 million Americans live with a disability, 10 percent of those as school-age children. Less than 20 percent of those with a disability attend church on a regular basis because of the physical and program barriers. After working in the church for several years, Joe and Jen felt strongly that God wanted them to go into missions. In 2010, they founded a non-profit organization called Ability Tree, and became fully funded Assemblies of God missionaries the following year.
That July, they were given a building in northwest Arkansas to use as an Ability Center, the first of many multi-purpose recreational spaces in the heart of downtown communities. The centers allow a safe place for children with disabilities and their families, providing monthly support groups, art and music programs, opportunities for siblings, and training for community volunteers. The Butlers’ vision is to establish an Ability Center in every county across the United States. Ability Tree currently works with churches in 22 states, helping them to adapt their programs to become more accessible to those with special needs. They then work to reach those in the community who aren’t yet attending church, so that they can connect them with Christians who will love and care for them. Joe and Jen can’t imagine doing anything else. “It really is the greatest opportunity for the church in America to reach one of the largest unreached people groups,” Joe stated. “It’s a huge vision but it’s our life mission.” To learn more about Ability Tree, visit their website: abilitytree.org.

A STUDENT’S JOURNEY
MY VFCC STORY JENNY DUNCAN
V
alley Forge Christian College (VFCC) senior, Jenny Duncan, hasn’t always believed in happy stories. Growing up, her family dynamic was strained; her dad worked a lot and her mom had serious addictions, dying of a drug overdose when Jenny was 15-years-old. In the midst of the turmoil, Jenny chose alcohol to drown her anger at God. The Duncan sisters did the best they could to take care of each other. One sister, Tracey, found Christ and decided to attend VFCC, a few hours drive from their home in West Virginia. A month after school began, Tracey was driving back home for the weekend and was killed in a car accident. Already despondent, it was the most hopeless Jenny had ever felt. On the day of Tracey’s funeral, Jenny was profoundly touched as the VFCC family began walking through the doors of the church. As she stood in front of Tracey’s casket, Jenny asked God to forgive her and to hold her. “From that moment my life completely changed,” Jenny said. She found out later that Tracey’s prayer had been answered: that God would do whatever it took to reach her sister.
Later that year, Jenny got involved in Tracey’s church and traveled with them to a VFCC Breakaway event where she felt a calling into missions. Even though she wanted to attend VFCC right away and study to become a missionary, she finished her Elementary Education degree at a college near home and spent the following year teaching fourth grade at an area school, wondering how and when she would be able to fulfill her newly discovered calling.
missionary couple and a church planter, sharing her testimony in churches as they itinerated. This summer, Jenny served with Rocco ‘82 and Ellen DiTrolio ‘11, missionaries to Argentina, helping them identify areas in need of new church plants and creating a network to fill that need. The trip was incredible and only sparked her dreams even more for teaching and serving in areas where the Gospel hasn’t yet been preached.
During that time, God never stopped stirring Jenny’s heart. A week of fasting and prayer culminated in a divinely ordained, unplanned trip to VFCC one spring Saturday. Miraculously, Jenny had come on an Open House day, and was able to meet with everyone who could help her achieve her goal of becoming a VFCC student.
Not long ago, Jenny Duncan would never have believed that she would be serving God, attending VFCC, and preparing for a life of ministry. But because of a special sister’s example and prayer, her life has completely changed. Her story will continue to bring glory to the One who has been writing it since the beginning.
The following year Jenny became part of the VFCC family.
Jenny plans to graduate in May 2013 with a World Missions degree.

E
ach spring, Valley Forge Christian College (VFCC) serves the local Phoenixville area through Community Service Day. This is an opportunity for students to give back and serve the needs of their communities. Marissa Schade ’12, was one of the many students involved in this event and her efforts were greatly rewarded.
OFFICE OF MARKETING
Schade and the efforts of the College through Community Service Day were selected as recipients for the 2011–2012 Jenzabar Foundation’s Student Leadership Award. These awards are given to students who are impacting their communities through special projects and making a difference in the world around them. These are the first students from VFCC to receive these honors, awarded in the form of an $8,000 grant that will be used to continue preparing individuals for a life of service and leadership. Schade has been involved with Community Service Day for four years and has served in various roles, such as Executive Student Leader of Student Groups and as a leader in fundraising. This year, she had the opportunity of writing a grant proposal for the college, a task that she had never completed before, and she admitted that the process was not easy. Fortunately, her invested time and determination reaped successful results. When Rev. Jennifer Gale, VFCC’s Vice President of Student Life, called Schade to tell her the news, Schade was shocked. “When I found out that we received the grant,” Schade said, “I was very grateful and humbled that someone else believed in this event as much as myself and the entire VFCC community.” Schade, along with VFCC student Brittany Attard, traveled to Dallas, Texas, to attend the awards ceremony on May 30, 2012, where the school was recognized for its contributions to the community. Marissa hopes to be able to help implement the changes stated within the grant and to further improve the impact of Community Service Day.

VFCC is always happy to acknowledge the accomplishments of its students, and we congratulate Schade and all of the participating students on their achievements.

elebrating its 10th year, the Patriot Classic Golf Tournament proved to be another win for Valley Forge Christian College (VFCC). This year’s tournament, held on June 7, 2012, at the Kimberton Golf Club in Phoenixville, PA, included 142 golfers teeing off in either a morning or afternoon round. Golfers received polo shirts, water bottles and other gifts as they arrived and registered, mingling with friends and acquaintances as they prepared their golf bags for one of the most memorable games of the year. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather, excellent food, and highly anticipated giveaways at the end of each round.
Rick Taschek, John Wegner, Mike VanHorn and Craig Smith took the title of winning foursome for the morning flight. In the afternoon, the winning team consisted of Russell Eggert, Christian Arendt, Bob West and Mark Hogsden. The Patriot Classic not only provides a fun way for alumni and friends of the College to reconnect, but this year, it also directly blessed current and future VFCC students by providing $6,000 in needed scholarships. VFCC is grateful to everyone who participated in this event to make it a success.

2012 REFRESH CONFERENCE
FCC is known for developing and training leaders for service and this holds especially true in the youth ministry field. Every year, VFCC promotes and sponsors the REFRESH conference, an event for youth leaders and youth leaders in training to come together for a day of teaching, encouragement and fellowship. The third annual conference took place Saturday, March 3, 2012, at VFCC’s campus and it featured powerful guest speakers Reggie Dabbs and Preston Centuolo as well as worship leader Michelle Margiotta. VFCC Professor and Youth Specialist, Phil Baker, hosted the event, which included breakout sessions and small group discussions for more than 80 attendees.
Keeping with the theme of REFRESH, each session included one of three titles: RENEW, RELOAD and RECHARGE. Topics discussed during each breakout session ranged from defining purpose to understanding campus ministry. Youth Ministry major Jennifer Lintz, a Junior at VFCC, attended the conference and shared her favorite highlights of the day. “For me, it truly was a time of refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Reggie Dabbs when he spoke to us. I think he had some really great things to say. Worship was really good, too, and was one of the most refreshing parts. Seeking God’s face while worshipping from a pure heart, which we discussed in one of the sessions, was amazing.” She went on to say, “Preston Centuolo did a session with us on what ministry looks like in the community. This was the
session that impacted me the most. I started feeling a tug towards that form of ministry as I listened to his stories and the methods he uses. That tug is why that session sticks out the most in my mind.” Professor Baker was thrilled with the outcome and he also shared his impression of this year’s conference. “We again were blessed with our returning speakers, Reggie Dabbs and Preston Centuolo. This year REFRESH went to a whole new level as we moved to Saturday with Michelle Margiotta as our worship leader from Times Square Church in NYC, and several guest Youth Pastors who shared in Breakout Sessions. The day was also greatly enhanced by the artistic giftings of INSPIRE, who expressed the heart of REFRESH through live painting during the worship times!”
NIGHT OF AWARENESS
This event, held on April 20, 2012, was designed to inform participants about the reality of homelessness in the community and to encourage them to take action. “Ultimately, the night was a wonderful way to raise awareness, and it solidified our love for those who are often overlooked,” said Kyle Manning ‘12, leader of VFCC’s Homeless Ministry.
VFCC raised close to $4,000 through the event and all proceeds went to Good Samaritan Shelter, a faith-based organization dedicated to serving homeless men, women and children in the Phoenixville and Ephrata communities. They provide services such as housing and education.

What is it like being homeless? With all of the resources and opportunities that we have access to, it can be difficult to step into someone’s shoes and imagine life without basic necessities, especially shelter. Students and faculty from VFCC and members of the Phoenixville community decided to accept this challenge and participate in A Night of Awareness.
The volunteer organization, The Nottage Project, also showed support by donating supplies for care packages. Participants were able to assemble these care packages with items such as toiletries for homeless adults and blankets and stuffed animals for children.

NEW SRC DIRECTOR DEBBIE HIRNEISEN

FCC is pleased to announce the new Library Director of the Storms Research Center (SRC), Debbie Hirneisen. Debbie has an extensive background in library research and management, including a bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature and German from Penn State University and a Master of Library Science degree from Rutgers University. She has worked as a Library Director, a Reference Librarian and she operated her own consulting company for 25 years, assisting with the organization and maintenance of corporate libraries. While she is new to her director position, Debbie is no stranger to VFCC. Having been employed at VFCC for six years, she was hired as the Cataloging and Acquisitions Librarian and has served as the Research and Instructional Services Librarian for the past three years.
OFFICE OF MARKETING
Debbie shared her vision for the SRC and her determination to meet certain challenges. “It really is an exciting time for academic libraries. So much is changing in terms of how we research, retrieve and evaluate information. Keeping on top of emerging technologies such as mobile apps, e-books and next generation readers, as well as new databases and information literacy is a daunting task but one that I see as vital to our growth and competitiveness. It is an ongoing balancing act to retain a ‘brick-and-mortar’ feel and presence to the library while at the same time responding to the challenges of maintaining a virtual SRC for our distance and online student community. With the Lord’s wisdom, we can accomplish it.” VFCC is grateful to have Debbie as part of the staff team and excited to see her lead the SRC.
As Director of the SRC, Debbie hopes to form new relationships with faculty and staff and to gain a better understanding of how students currently view the library and its role in their lives.

DR. MEYER RECEIVES ARMY ACCOLADES
Dr. Meyer was originally told that these awards were for Sgt. Swomley and that they would be given to him during one of VFCC’s chapel services. Little did Dr. Meyer know that the awards were to be presented in his [Dr. Meyer’s] name.
A special chapel service was held in VFCC’s Flower Chapel, January 31, 2012. Southeast Pennsylvania Chair of the ESGR, Albert Newman, and Commander of the 131st Transportation Company, Cpt. Dana Howett, presented the awards to Dr. Meyer. The ceremony continued when Cpt. Howett also honored Sgt. Swomley with a Commander’s Coin for his dedication and loyalty while serving. “It is obvious that Dr. Meyer has exemplified excellence,” Cpt. Howell stated. “I heard a lot about him and saw first hand how he supported us while we were in Afghanistan. Whenever he sent a package we would all huddle around. There was no question

A hero is formed in many ways. Sometimes the development process takes many years, and sometimes a single act can catapult a hero-in-the-making to a place where he or she instantly becomes an incredible inspiration.
F
or Valley Forge Christian College’s Director of Information Technology and current VFCC student, Brian Swomley, a recent heroic journey took him halfway across the globe. On January 7, 2011, he traded his tailored suit for an Army-issued uniform, said goodbye to family and friends, and left to serve for an entire year in one of the most hostile places in the world. Joining the Army National Guard fifteen years earlier was a decision that came easily for Swomley, having been influenced by numerous family members in the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard. “I’ve always considered myself a ‘patriot’ and I feel a strong sense of service to the country,” he said. But Swomley also knew that he wanted to attend college and, in 2001, his heart for pastoral counseling brought him to VFCC. Two and a half years into his college career, he was activated to go to Iraq, but ended up as part of Base Operations at Fort Dix, New Jersey instead. His educational dream never died, though, and in the summer of 2005 he returned to the College to work for the Office of Information Technology as a Cabling Specialist, hoping to eventually finish his degree. In 2010, he stepped into the role of Director of Information Technology.
A HERO RETURNS
HOME
The following year, his life changed dramatically when he learned that he would be deployed to Afghanistan for one year. Leaving his family, co-workers and friends was difficult because there was a very real chance that he might never see them again. In January 2011, Swomley was appointed as a Truck Commander in Afghanistan, putting him in charge of a four-person truck crew, which was part of an armored convoy that escorted local and national trucks to and from their destinations. His first five-day mission lasted an astounding twenty five days, granting his crew an elevated level of respect. God continued to give Swomley incredible favor. In his absence from the base, Swomley’s company realized that they were lacking in computer and communications support. Knowing his background, they brought him on as the NCOIC (Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge) of the Communications Section, where he began to support everything relating to communications for his company. Soon, he was not only supporting his company, but the other companies in the battalion and the brigade. For the next ten months he served faithfully in an area where he was able to use his past experience to transform the Army’s communications structure. Swomley’s heart for people produced a special camaraderie with the men and women with whom he lived. He built “pastoral friendships,” breaking the mold of traditionally superficial Army relationships. “I would ask the tough, deeper questions and would be the guy that they could identify with,” Brian said.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, a strong wife continued to raise three children without her best friend and constant helper. Amanda, Brian’s wife of 15 years, learned to do things that she never thought she would have to do, like remembering to get the car’s oil changed, preparing for holidays alone, and filing the family’s taxes.
In December, 2011, Staff Sergeant Swomley arrived home and stepped back into his roles as husband, father and Director of Information Technology. He is currently working part-time on his Business Degree through VFCC. But he is not the same man who left one year before. The life skills that he learned overseas have shaped the way he leads.
With the support of family and friends, Amanda stayed active as a leader in her daughters’ Girl Scout troops, helped with homework each afternoon, and kept up with the day-to-day tasks of running a home. She and Brian were able to talk most days, although the conversations were always very short. “I realized about six months into Brian’s absence that we barely laughed anymore,” Amanda said. “Life seemed more like business that needed to get done, so we just did it.” A day never went by where the kids, Charity (11), Ocean (9), and Silas (5) didn’t miss their father.
“I’m a lot less stressed and more patient about things,” Swomley said. He listens more, collaborates more, and is clear in his communication. He is flexible and always ready to change and adapt. Very importantly, he has learned to submit to and pray for his leaders. Not surprisingly, the experience also completely changed Swomley’s perspective on life. “I now understand what’s really important,” he said. “A bad day at VFCC is better than a good day in Afghanistan.” The Valley Forge Christian College family is proud to have a hero home.

PATRIOTS SPORTS
ROUNDUP BASKETBALL The men’s and women’s basketball teams had a stellar 2011–2012 athletic season. Both teams obtained winning records, won regional championships and made Valley Forge Christian College (VFCC) sports history! Among VFCC’s varsity sports teams, the men’s basketball team finished the year with the highest winning percentage and the highest finish at the national tournament. The team secured its fourth NCCAA II East Region championship in six years by defeating Lancaster Bible College (98-61). The regional championship victory earned VFCC an automatic bid to the national tournament. For the first time in school history VFCC entered the national tournament as the number one seed. This was the third time in four years that the VFCC Patriots made their way into the national tournament game. Like the two previous appearances (2009 and 2011), VFCC matched up against Grace Bible College. Although they didn’t win the championship game, the Patriots concluded their season with an impressive 26-8 overall record.

The women’s basketball team came on strong late in the season, as they managed to win 9 out of 11 games. The Lady Patriots had little trouble advancing past Philadelphia Biblical University in the regional semifinals. On the road, the Lady Patriots won a second-consecutive regional championship, by defeating Lancaster Bible College (64-48) and earning the automatic bid to the national tournament. Entering nationals, VFCC’s women fell during the first-round match to Maranatha Baptist Bible College (80-65), the eventual national runnerup. In the consolation rounds, VFCC defeated Trinity Bible College and Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College, securing a fifth place overall finish. The Lady Patriots completed the season with an 18-17 record.

on Mack, VFCC’s Athletic Director and Head Coach of the men’s basketball team, was honored in March as the 2012 National Christian Colleges Athletic Association (NCCAA) Division II National Coach of the Year, for the third time! “Receiving the NCCAA II National Coach of the Year title is a great honor, but this award speaks more about our caliber of players and coaching staff,” Mack said. “I recognize that the success and failures ultimately fall on the head coach but this individual recognition is a team award for our players and coaches. I am extremely blessed to have the opportunity to coach Christian character through the game of basketball. Whenever I experience any type of success in my life, I always reflect on my life journey and how God has molded me for such a time as this. It’s the journey that prepares us for eternity.”

Coach Mack led the VFCC Patriots to their fourth NCCAA East Region Championship and fifth consecutive 20-win season. The
team earned more wins this season than any other NCCAA Division II team in the nation, and they finished the season with a 26-8 overall record. The Patriots faced off against top contenders in many season tournaments and received the number-one seed entering the 2012 National Tournament for their outstanding performance in the regular and playoff seasons. Before nationals, the team secured 15 wins and only two losses, both against Grace Bible College, the winner of the National Tournament. Although the VFCC basketball team did not bring home the championship this year, Coach Mack remains proud of the team for their accomplishments, “Although we experienced defeat competing for a national championship, we are still competing strong for the crown that lasts forever.” In addition to being named National Coach of the Year, Mack also received his seventh East Region Coach of the Year award in 2012.

TO THE
ENDS OF THE EARTH
Hudson Taylor once said, “The Great Commission is not an option to be considered; it is a command to be obeyed.” This year, 86 Valley Forge Christian College students, faculty and staff obeyed the command to go, by participating in a college sponsored missions trip.
A
team led by student Melissa Moran ’12 spent their spring break in Greece. They built relationships at local churches and universities, organized a Vacation Bible School for gypsy children, and partnered with their missionary hosts to promote a human trafficking awareness day. That same week, a team of students led by Professor Phil Baker and student Joe Kivala served with a missionary family in Jamaica. They spent time hosting ministry events in a park and at a church, organized a fun night just for kids, and held an assembly at a local school. Led by Professor Jennifer Duncan and student Christina Swe ’12, ten students spent an exciting week in the Sahara over their spring break, meeting the Saharawi people, sleeping in tents, and trekking through the desert to share the Gospel. They prayed for and shared their testimonies with those who they met along the way.
The VFCC Concert Choir and the Honors Study Tour group, led by Dr. William DeSanto and Dr. Michael DiGiacomo, joined together for a second time on a spring break trip to Italy. The choir combined missions with a concert tour in both international and Italian Assemblies of God Churches in Milan, Rome and Padova. The Honors Study Tour group was able to travel to important sites to learn more about Italy’s history and culture. Spring break included one last trip to an undisclosed country in the Middle East. Six students, including leader Caleb Anderson, spent time building relationships and sharing Christ with students at the local universities and cafes. They went on prayer walks, served at a community center, and ministered with their missionary hosts at a women’s center.
One team of four students, led by student Brittany Johnson, left on May 5th for Haiti. The team hosted children’s programs in schools and churches, visited homes and prayed with those they met, and promoted a brand new church plant in the community. Also on May 5th, fourteen students traveled to Las Vegas, NV. for a unique trip led by Professor Jennifer Duncan and student Haley Kohler. The team worked with a ministry that focuses on human trafficking, and made vases and gift bags for women in the brothels. They took a prayer drive to a brothel, and served the homeless at the Dream Center and at a church in South Las Vegas. Through these trips, the students’ hearts were broken, their perspectives challenged, and their callings confirmed. As student Sam Clemo expressed, they “realized how beautiful God’s people are, all around the world.”

SOCIAL WORK ACCREDITATION
FCC’s Bachelor of Social Work program was recently accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), a nonprofit association representing more than 2,500 individual members, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs of professional social work education. Under the direction of Social Work Program Director and Assistant Professor, Stephen W. Stoeffler, accreditation from CSWE indicates that VFCC has created a strong program with a solid curriculum that ensures the highest standards of competency for faculty and students. “This is a huge milestone and we are absolutely thrilled about the CSWE accreditation for VFCC’s Social Work program,” said VFCC President Dr. Don Meyer. “This accomplishment is a longstanding commitment and continued investment in providing quality social work education to our students and the

recognition that we are preparing young men and women social workers to better their communities.”
CSWE accreditation is a rigorous multiyear process which verifies that social work degree programs meet the standards considered essential to high quality social work education. The CSWE voted to grant VFCC national accreditation for the academic year 2008–2009 through June 2016.
Professor Stoeffler stated that, “Among VFCC’s strengths in this five-year process was the diligent work of Dr. David Scolforo, Chair of the Behavioral Sciences Department, Dr. Philip McLeod, former Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, as well as all of the faculty and administrators who successfully participated in achieving this national accreditation.”
“The accreditation by CSWE is recognition of the quality of our program and assuring the community that VFCC graduates have critical knowledge and skills,” said Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Kevin Beery. “Our Social Work program is preparing its graduating students to make a difference in their jobs from day one, and we are pleased for this
This significant recognition will allow VFCC to continue to pursue its commitment to community service and academic excellence, not only in the Pennsylvania area, but also nationally. SUMMER RENOVATION PROJECTS
hrough the combined efforts of church volunteer groups, Retired Volunteers (RVers), Sodexo employees, and a few contractors, the College completed several major projects this summer in addition to continually improving the grounds and presentation of the campus. The projects included the renovation of three residence halls and gym offices, installation of a security camera system, discontinued use of the old boiler system to improve operational efficiency, and upgrades to classroom technology. Several residence halls received significant improvements this summer. In the fall of 2011, Building 24 was renamed Paproski Hall in honor of Rev. John Paproski, and a fundraising initiative began for needed renovations. Funding allowed for the replacement of the hall carpeting, paint, ceilings and lights, the installation of vinyl stair tread, and bathroom renovations. Shelton and Wells Halls also saw considerable improvements, including new hall carpeting and paint, and vinyl tread for staircases and entrances. In the gym, storage room was expanded, and employee offices were relocated and renovated. Offices received new paint, carpeting, furniture, and vinyl stair tread.
A conference room was added, providing needed meeting space for the Athletics Office staff and potential athletes and parents. Nearly 50 security cameras were installed throughout campus, demonstrating the College’s commitment to a safe environment. Four “mini” boilers were installed in Paproski Hall, Building 23, DiTrolio Hall, and Building 56, allowing for the closure of the main boiler system, which has cost the College a significant amount of money for repairs and maintenance each year. Along with the lowered repair costs, the new system will save the College over $10,000 in energy costs annually. Other infrastructure projects included faculty office renovation, the addition of a Career Services room, a new roof on the pump house, and grounds improvement. Lastly, classroom technology was upgraded this summer, including the installation of HD flat screens with HD widescreen perspective projectors and Smart Board technology. All teaching stations were upgraded with fresh station-control programming and new equipment, and music classrooms were outfitted with high fidelity sound systems. Most of the installation of the equipment was done by members of our Office of Information Technology, which saved the college over $18,000.
2ND ANNUAL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
1 Grand Prize Winner
The second annual VFCC student photography contest took place this spring, illustrating VFCC’s six core values (contest categories): We Believe in God, We Prepare for the Future, We Care for Others, We Embrace Community, We Affirm the Dignity of All People, and We Serve with Creativity. The Grand Prize winner was Katherine McInerney ’12. The title of her picture is “Somewhere Beyond. God Has Destined Us For Greatness.” While on a spring break mission trip to Jordan, Katherine watched her friend (pictured in the photo 1), fall in love with the country. That very week a calling was defined and a boldness was birthed. “We are all meant for something great,” Katherine told her friend. “If God is telling you what you need to do, He will help you do it.” View our Honorable Mentions winners at vfcc.edu/photocontest.

CATEGORY WINNERS: Katherine McInerney — We Prepare for the Future 1 “Somewhere Beyond. God has Destined Us for Greatness.” This photo was taken on a missions trip to Jordan through VFCC. Because of this college, we are able to move forward in the direction God has called each of us to.
3
Courtney Mortnesen — We Serve with Creativity 2 “No Longer Alone.” This is meant to illustrate the idea that our belief in God shapes us into more whole people. We are no longer in bondage, but free. We are no longer dead, but alive. We are no longer alone, but loved.
Kinzi Harrington — We Embrace Community 3 This photo shows community by showing people together as they take in God’s creations; in this way, class, gender, or race all fade from the collective gathering.
Terrah Koon — We Believe in God 4 “Hope on a String.” Christ’s glory only shines brighter when the world around us seems dull and dark. This simple illustration shows that we can and should believe in God even through our trials, in the midst of hopelessness.
Terrah Koon — We Affirm the Dignity of All People 5

“Selfless Servant.” This old man shovels dirt all day atop a volcano in El Salvador. His labor is to feed him and his family, yet his wages aren’t nearly enough to do so. God promises our labors aren’t in vain and Jesus is who gives this man his dignity.
Terrah Koon — We Care for Others 5 “A Humble Mess.” When we care for others we sometimes have to walk in dirty places, get our feet dirty, so that others don’t have to. We lead with our feet, which carry us. And so we must show and use our feet to care.
