Brevard Veterans Memorial Center hosts Sept. 11, 2001, remembrance Center to unveil piece of the Pentagon Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

The Brevard County 10-13 Club and the Veterans Memorial Center are joining together again for their annual remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. “Beginning at 12:30 until 7 (p.m.),” said Donn Weaver, chairman of the Brevard Veterans Council. “The solum ceremony is 4 to 5 (p.m.)” The 9/11 Brevard County 20th Anniversary Memorial Tribute will be at Veterans Memorial Park, 400 S. Sykes Creek Parkway, Merritt Island. Admission is free.

Speakers The master of ceremonies will be Al Boettjer, the president of the Brevard County 10-13 Club, which is made up of current and former law enforcement officers. He’s a former New York City detective. “He was at 9/11,” Weaver said. A local cop with direct connection to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack will also speak. “Next one up is Chris Smith, Melbourne Beach Police Department, surviving 9/11 son,” said Weaver. “His dad was killed in 9/11.” Speaker Wayne Justice was a rear admiral in the Coast Guard. “He was a witness on (Sept. 11, 2001) at the Pentagon,” Weaver explained. Boettjer will speak about the many who’ve died premature deaths directly tied to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. For example, many who were near the World Trade Center have shown higher-than-average rates of certain cancers and cardiovascular disease related to inhaling toxic smoke, fumes and debris. Of course, too, thousands

of servicemembers from the U.S. and allied nations have died while serving in support of operations in the global war on terrorism. More than 3,500 coalition servicemembers have died in operations in Afghanistan alone over the last two decades. The solum ceremony will include renderings of the national anthem and “God Bless the U.S.A.,” written by Lee Greenwood. Army veteran Cynthia Watkins will perform the national anthem. Jody Wells will perform “God Bless the U.S.A.”

Unveiling piece of the Pentagon During the ceremony the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center will unveil an 80-pound piece of the Pentagon. “We got it two weeks ago,” said Weaver. The center has had on display a 5-pound piece of the Pentagon on loan from former Los Angeles detective Art Grenchi, who’s now living in Brevard County. Grenchi was involved in the investigation of the World Trade Center. “He was also involved in the Pentagon after that,” Waver said. Weaver said while those responsible for the remains of the World Trade Center have released pieces for public displays for decades now, those handling the remains of the Pentagon attack site have been slower to do so. “Finally the Pentagon started releasing pieces, and people want both,” said Weaver. Because of Granchi’s efforts, the center was supposed to get a piece of the Pentagon last year. Unfortunately, the global pandemic slowed the process. “I’ve confirmed, it’s the largest one in Florida,” Weaver said. “I just confirmed that today.” The center also has a 3-foot beam from the World Trade Center that’s been incorporated into a memorial.

Additional events Before and after the ceremony, the center will have an appropriate celebration of life, something the Sept. 11, 2001,

Letter to the EDITOR

During times of unrest, please check on fellow Veterans To the Editor: I believe all Americans are reeling from the events of this past week, and we are still trying to process the horrible and unnecessary loss of so many courageous American military lives that resulted. These Marines were not even engaged in fighting; they were trying to help other human beings. I pray there will be no more lives lost but that is in God’s hands now. My main concern is to support all of our military members who fought in Afghanistan during the 20+ years our military was there. The message I am receiving from the few contacts I still have is a request for a Buddy Call List to check on depression among these men and women. Sometimes just a call to see how they are doing can make the difference between

good and bad outcomes. If you have a master email or phone number list of local Veteran service groups, or a personal list of service member friends, please take a few minutes to make some calls to these folks to make sure they are all right. Make a commitment to call them weekly as a follow through; your call could make a huge difference in how they are coping. Thank you very much for your help and compassion. God bless those we lost and continuing prayers for their families. Dianne Robbins Former Secretary, United Veterans of St. Lucie County, Inc. Gold Star wife and sister

Most devastating war in history ends with Japanese surrender Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com

On this Sept. 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan formally surrendered to the Allies, bringing an end to World War II. By the summer of 1945, the defeat of Japan was a foregone conclusion. The Japanese navy and air force were destroyed. The Allied naval blockade of Japan and intensive bombing of Japanese cities had left the country and its economy devastated.

Road to victory At the end of June, the Americans captured Okinawa, a Japanese island from which the Allies could launch an invasion of the main Japanese home islands. U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur was put in charge of the invasion, which was code-named “Operation Olympic” and set for November 1945. The invasion of Japan promised to be the bloodiest seaborne attack of all time, conceivably 10 times as costly as the Normandy invasion in terms of Allied casualties. On July 16, a new option became available when the United States secretly detonated the world’s first atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert. Ten days later, the Allies issued the Potsdam Declaration, demanding the “unconditional surrender of all the Japanese armed forces.” Failure to comply would mean “the inevitable and complete destruction of the Japanese armed forces and just as inevitable the utter devastation of the Japanese homeland.” On July 28, Japanese Prime Minister Kantaro Suzuki responded by telling the press that his government was “paying no attention” to the Allied ultimatum. U.S. President Harry Truman ordered the devastation to proceed, and on August 6, the U.S. B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, killing an estimated 80,000 people and fatally wounding thousands more. After the Hiroshima attack, a faction of Japan’s supreme war council favored acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration, but the majority resisted unconditional surrender. On August 8, Japan’s desperate situation took another turn for the worse when the USSR declared war against Japan. The next day, Soviet forces attacked in Manchuria, rapidly overwhelming Japanese positions there, and a second U.S. atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese coastal city of Nagasaki.

Emperor calls midnight meeting Just before midnight on Aug. 9, Japanese Emperor Hirohito convened the supreme war council. After a long, emotional debate, he backed a proposal by Prime Minister Suzuki

in which Japan would accept the Potsdam Declaration “with the understanding that said Declaration does not compromise any demand that prejudices the prerogatives of His Majesty as the sovereign ruler.” The council obeyed Hirohito’s acceptance of peace, and on Aug. 10 the message was relayed to the United States. “We have resolved to pave the way for a grand peace for all the generations to come by enduring the unendurable and suffering what is insufferable.” The United States immediately accepted Japan’s surrender. President Truman appointed MacArthur to head the Allied occupation of Japan as Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers. For the site of Japan’s formal surrender, Truman chose the USS Missouri, a battleship that had seen considerable action in the Pacific and was named after Truman’s native state. MacArthur, who was instructed to preside over the surrender, held off the ceremony until Sept. 2 in order to allow time for representatives of all the major Allied powers to arrive. On Sunday, Sept. 2, more than 250 Allied warships lay at anchor in Tokyo Bay. The flags of the United States, the U.K., the Soviet Union, and China fluttered above the deck of the Missouri. Just after 9 a.m. Tokyo time, Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu signed on behalf of the Japanese govern-

ment. General Yoshijiro Umezu then signed for the Japanese armed forces, and his aides wept as he made his signature. Supreme Commander MacArthur next signed on behalf of the United Nations, declaring, “It is my earnest hope and indeed the hope of all mankind that from this solemn occasion a better world shall emerge out the blood and carnage of the past.” Admiral Chester Nimitz signed for the United States. As the 20-minute ceremony ended, the sun burst through low-hanging clouds. The most devastating war in human history was over.

Vietnam bid for independence Hours after Japan’s surrender in World War II, Vietnamese communist Ho Chi Minh declares the independence of Vietnam from France. The proclamation paraphrased the U.S. Declaration of Independence in declaring, “All men are born equal: the Creator has given us inviolable rights, life, liberty, and happiness!” and was cheered by an enormous crowd gathered in Hanoi’s Ba Dinh Square. It would be 30 years, however, before Ho’s dream of a united, communist Vietnam became reality. Saigon, Vietnam, was renamed Ho Chi Minh City after it fell to the communists in 1975.

LEST WE FORGET Seminole County hosts moving Sept. 11 memorial

The Orlando Fire Department’s Lt. Searcy stops for a moment at a previous Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk in Altamonte Springs. On Sept. 11 T2T-Orlando is hosting its annual run memorializing the heroic run of fallen New York City firefighter Stephen Siller during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

T2T-Orlando will host a moving Sept. 11 memorial. Really moving. The group’s annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk will be on Saturday, Sept. 11, at Cranes Roost Park, Altamonte Springs. The event will be from 6:30 to 10 a.m. The run and walk will launch at 7:30 a.m. The park is at 274 Cranes Roost Blvd. in Altamonte Springs. Registration is at www.t2t.org/ event/2021-tunnel-to-towers-tower-climb-orlando. “The 5K is in remembrance of Stephen Siller, who was killed on (Sept. 11, 2001),” said Jim Reed, outreach coordinator. Reed, a Vietnam-era Navy Veteran, said T2T-Orlando has hosted local Tunnel to Towers fundraisings since 2013. The 2020 event, however, was cancelled due to the SARS-CoV-2/ COVID-19 pandemic. There will be other Tunnel to Towers runs and walks that’ll fall on the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Vero Beach Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk will be at Riverside Park, 3200 Riverside Park Drive. That run will launch at 7:30 a.m. Registration is at www.t2t. org/event/2021-tunnel-towers-5k-run-walk-vero-beach. The Vero Beach run started in 2010. Additionally, there’ll be Tunnel to Towers runs in St. Augustine and Fort Lauderdale on Sept. 11 this year.

Stephen Siller’s heroic run On Sept. 11, 2001, firefighter Stephen Siller was heading out from the Fire Department New York’s Brooklyn Squad 1 station to meet up with family. “He was heading home to play golf with his brothers,” Reed explained. Siller’s work scanner exploded with news about the first plane hitting the World Trade Center before he got to the course. Siller called his wife to

let her know he was heading back to Squad 1. By the time he got to the station it was emptied. All his fellow firefighter were at the World Trade Center. Siller was joining them one way or another. At the station, Siller was about 4.5 miles from the World Trade Center. He grabbed about 70 pounds of gear and pointed his pickup truck toward the unfolding disaster, toward the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel to get to the World Trade Center. The tunnel is more popularly known as the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. By the time he got to the tunnel, cops had already closed it to traffic. The father of five could have parked where he was and offered assistance to people fleeing the disaster. Surely there would have been many injured among them and that would have been an honorable call. But Siller grew up in a

family that revered St. Francis of Assisi and his teachings of a total commitment to the Christian value of self-sacrifice. Siller grew up raised by his older brothers, because his parents died in separate events when he was a child. Siller knew the value of life. Siller would not do second best no matter how honorable it’d be. He grabbed the gear and left his truck where it was. He ran to the terrorist attack on foot. He’d make it there in time to be one of 343 firefighters who died at the scene when the towers collapsed. “(Siller) was last seen entering the South Tower,” Reed said. “His body was never recovered.”

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation By the end of 2001, Siller’s

family created a foundation that raises money to help first responders and Veterans. To raise funds the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation organized the annual New York run that roughly retraces Siller’s last run. One of the foundation’s projects is the Smart Home Program, which gives veterans accessible homes. “A smart home is specially designed for the needs of the catastrophically injured Veteran,” said Reed. “They’re not cooky-cutter.” He said that there are 92 completed or under-construction smart homes for Veterans. Another program is the Fallen First Responder Home Program. That program pays off mortgages of first responders with children who died in the line of duty. Among those who’ve benefited from the program is the family of Kissimmee Police Department officer Matthew Baxter, who was killed on Aug. 18, 2017.

Personal connection Reed got involved in organizing the Seminole County annual run, because he grew up in New York. One of his childhood friends, Lee Ielpi, joined the Fire Department New York. He retired in 1997. “Both of his sons joined the (Fire Department New York) to follow in his footsteps,” Reed said. “One of his sons was killed in the 9/11 terrorist attack.” That was Jonathan Ielpi. He was 29. The younger Ielpi reportedly gave up his beloved hockey, so game injuries didn’t interrupt his work as a firefighter. He was survived by his wife and two sons. “Everything I do I do in memory of (Ielpi’s) son,” Reed said. “He was a member of squad 288.” Reed said the Central Florida Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk generally attracts 1,000 to 1,200 participants. Day of registrations are available, but highly discouraged. Registration is $10 to $40.

Patriotic Palm City hosts two memorials and have a memorial and do service projects throughout the community.” This year due to ongoing pandemic organizers aren’t scheduling volunteer projects, but are asking people to find their own acts of kindness to do individually. However, attendees will have opportunities to donate blood and get COVID-19 vaccinations after the memorial at Jock Leighton Park.

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com Martin County’s Palm City will remember Sept. 11, 2001, morning and evening. On Saturday, Sept. 11, the unincorporated city will have two memorial services to honor those who died in the multipronged terrorist attack 20 years ago. The first will be the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony hosted by AmeriCorps Seniors program of United Way of Martin County. The second will be the annual 9/11 Candlelight Vigil hosted by USA 9/11 First Responders of the Treasure Coast.

9/11 Candlelight Vigil

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony The 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony hosted by AmeriCorps Seniors program of the United Way of Martin County will be at Jock Leighton Park, 3755 S.W. Mapp Road. It’ll open at 7:45 a.m. The AmeriCorps remembrance is annual and usually at the Martin County Fairgrounds in Stuart. Kathleen Stacey, AmeriCorps Seniors director, said there were a couple reasons to move the annual ceremony to Palm City. One is having a lot of outdoor space for holding a heavily attended event as the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 Delta variant is still a threat. The other is Veterans Memorial Bridge east of Jock Leighton Park. “We have put all of our plans in place for a very large group,” Stacey said. That “very large group” will include members of Martin County Fire Rescue. They’ll, in gear, lead an about 2.5-mile walk over Veterans Memorial Bridge. “They’re going to get a head start,” Stacey said. As in the firefighters will start out when the program begins at the park with remarks by Martin County Commissioner Ed Ciampi. That’ll be at 8:30 a.m. Additionally, Chad Cianciulli, Martin County Fire Rescue Chief, will speak. “At 8:46 (a.m.) we’ll have a moment of silence,” said Stacey. That’s the time when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower, 1 WTC, between floors 93 and 99. It was the first of four hijacked planes to crash that day, the first warning America was under attack. “After that we’ll have a 9/11 tribute by a group from Palm City called Turn Up the Heat,” Stacey said. “It’s a dance group.” Then attendees will follow the firefighters to cross the Veterans Memorial Bridge. “We’ll catch up with them after our brief program and moment of silence,” explained Stacey. One of the vehicle lanes will be cleared of

vehicles to give walkers space and safety. AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers will hand out 2,997 American flags. That is the most commonly accepted count of the innocent who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Stacey said the flags will be labeled with the names of those who died as encouragement to help others on the anniversary of the largest terrorist attack in history. “(The event) used to be called the 9/11 Day of Service,” she said. Previously in the conversation, Stacey explained, “We used to do service projects. We’d meet

At 7 p.m. the USA 9/11 First Responders of the Treasure Coast will host its annual 9/11 Candlelight Vigil at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library, 2551 S.W. Matheson Ave., Palm City. That is the site of the Martin County Sept. 11 Memorial. Dennis McKenna, president of the organization, is a former federal officer who responded to the World Trade Center attack site on Sept. 11, 2001. “We have 3,000 souls we can never forget, and more each year,” McKenna said. There are numerous health conditions strongly linked to exposure to smoke and debris from the World Trade Center collapse. It’s impossible to calculate the exact number of people who’ve died prematurely due to the terrorist attack, but some researchers believe it’s more than on Sept. 11, 2001. The Martin County Sept. 11 Memorial was ceremonially dedicated on Flag Day, June 14, in 2014. The centerpiece is a 22-foot beam from the World Trade Center. The 2.75-ton beam is set vertically tilted north northeast toward New York City. The monument was a joint effort between Martin County and the USA 9/11 First Responders, which is an unincorporated civic group formed to provide fellowship for Fire Department City of New York, New York Police Department and other agencies’ first responders to the Sept. 11 attacks now living on the Treasure Coast. McKenna helped Martin County and the City of Port St. Lucie obtain four pieces of steel from the World Trade Center. Another piece of World Trade Center steel has been part of a monument at the MIDFLORIDA Event Center, formerly the Port St. Lucie Civic Center, since 2012. The Palm City library was selected as the display area for the beam because it had spacious parking, conference rooms for outdoor/indoor events, and because Ciampi, during a previous term on the commission, was able to use district funds to build the supporting structures. The monument is at the entrance of the Cummings library’s parking lot and available for private viewing and reflection 24 hours a day.

How To Manage The Fear Of Being Alone

VETERAN VOICE • SEPTEMBER 2, 2021 • 9

be active: Sitting around and doing nothing will not make things any better whether it is dealing with the fear of being alone or something else. Take it one day at a time and try to make the effort of being active with others in your community.

By Stan Popovich FOR VETERAN VOICE

Sometime or another, we will experience a time when we are alone. Some people fear being alone for various reasons.

The first step is to become comfortable with yourself and having the self-confidence that you will be able to manage being by yourself. With this in mind, here are eight suggestions that a person can use so that the fear of loneliness doesn’t become a major issue in their life. 1. Find an activity that you enjoy doing: Joining a group activity can be a great way to meet people. Doing something that you like to do will make you happy and the fact that you will be around different people will increase your chances of making friends. 2. Spend your time with a pet: Animals are a great source of companionship. Volunteer at your local animal

ness. 3. Help others through community service: There are many people out there who could benefit from your time and talents. Helping others can give you a sense of pride and accomplishment and help you not to focus on your loneliness. You can also increase your chances of meeting others with similar interests. 4. It could be worse: Imagine that you are married or stuck in a relationship that you can’t get out of and also makes you miserable on a daily basis. Being in an unhappy relationship can be very depressing, so remind yourself the next time you feel a little lonely. This will help put some things in perspective. 5. Spending time with God can help: Spending time with God and asking God for help in your time of loneliness can be of great comfort. You never know how God will work in your life. Including God in your everyday living can help reduce your loneliness. Talk to a priest or minister for some guidance. 6. The important thing is to

7. Things can change: Nothing remains the same and events change all of the time. Even if the thing that you feared does happen there are circumstances and factors that you can’t predict which can be used to your advantage. You never know when an opportunity that you are looking for will come to you which is why suicide is not the answer. 8. You’re not the only one who is alone: Remember that everyone deals with loneliness sometime in their life. Focus on your life and don’t compare yourself to others. Continue to seek friendships with other people and don’t feel sorry for yourself. There are all kinds of people in various circumstances so don’t assume that you are the only one who is alone. Into the breach

A 21st Theater Sustainment Command Soldier walks through a hangar at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, inspecting cots. The 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s contracting capabilities as part of its Logistics Civil Augmentation Program-Europe will increase Ramstein’s capability to support Operation Allies Refuge and the capability at Rhine Ordnance Barracks – currently configured to accommodate just over 2,200 people – by 3,000 in the next few days. This support includes beds, tents, latrines, showers, food service and all life support needs. The 405th AFSB has also been tasked to increase capability at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo, to support 1,200 more personnel.

Army jumps in to evacuate allies, citizens Cameron Porter

405TH AFSB PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICER

Evacuees from Afghanistan have begun arriving in Kaiserslautern this week as part of Operation Allies Refuge. Initially, the Deployment Processing Center at Rhine Ordnance Barracks here – configured to accommodate just over 2,200 people – was activated to support the arriving Afghan evacuees, but thanks to the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s contracting capabilities as part of its Logistics Civil Augmentation Program-Europe, ROB’s capability will increase by 3,000 more in the next few days to a total of more than 5,200. Additionally, LOGCAP-Europe has issued a contract to support 1,200 more individuals at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo, at part of Operation Allies Refuge, which is also scheduled to be fully operational in the next few days.

Everything ready The 405th AFSB LOGCAP contracts will provide fest tents, containerized shower systems, containerized latrine systems, a laundry capability for individuals and for linens, a full-service dining capability, cots and everything else life support related, said Michael Johnson, LOGCAP-Europe senior planner for the 405th AFSB. Johnson said this no notice mission, from concept to execution, was completed in record time. 405th AFSB to establish facilities for 4,200 more Afghan evacuees in Germany, Kosovo “I’ve seen LOGCAP in the past operate super-fast,” said Johnson. “In weeks, we’ve supported exercises. In just 10 days, we supported a regionally aligned forces rotation of a thousand Soldiers, but what happened with Operation Allies Refuge – we were able to receive notice on Friday they

might need something. By Saturday night we issued the contract to increase capacity by an additional 3,000. In four days, we had equipment arriving on site and in an additional four days, the site will be fully operational.”

Training is key Although this is one of the first no notice requirements for LOGCAP, Johnson said all the exercises and training up until now – the Defender Europe, Saber Guardian and Saber Strike exercises – have definitely prepared the 405th AFSB for this. 405th AFSB to establish facilities for 4,200 more Afghan evacuees in Germany, Kosovo “I think the most amazing thing about this operation as a whole is – pretty much every military member I’ve talked to who has done a deployment to Afghanistan has had some sort of positive experience with the Afghan population,” said Johnson. “So I think the entire military community has made it a priority to make this happen. Because of that – from the senior leadership all the way down to the individuals on the ground – every single

person is motivated. I think that is the number one reason this is happening so quickly and so efficiently.” The process was flattened as much as possible, and everything that is required to be done to get the contractor on the ground to execute has happened, said Johnson. “Previously, we have moved quickly, but not at this speed and this capacity,” said Michael Johnson, Logistics Civil Augmentation Program-Europe senior planner for the 405th Army Field Support Brigade. Johnson said the 405th AFSB has also been tasked to increase capability at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo, to support 1,200 more personnel – to include beds, tents, latrines, showers, food service and all life support needs. “The contractors are mobilizing now and are expecting to have the first 600 beds ready either tonight or tomorrow. The next 600 will be available about three days after that, and by the end of the week we’re going to have the capacity in place to support 1,200 individuals down at Camp Bondsteel,” Johnson said.

Getting them out quick Operation Allies Refuge is facilitating the quick, safe evacuation of U.S. citizens, Special Immigrant Visa applicants and other at-risk Afghans from Afghanistan. This initiative follows through on America’s commitment to Afghan citizens who have helped the United States, and provides them essential support at secure locations, where they and their families can complete the SIV process safely.

The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and under the operational control of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Europe and Africa. The brigade is headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. Forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging the U.S. Army Materiel Command materiel enterprise to support joint forces.
