Letter to the EDITOR Veteran Voice writer thanked for Sept. 11 article To the Editor: A new monument to fallen servicemembers was dedicated at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery Sept. 11. Photo by Roger Scruggs

New monument dedicated at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery To the Editor: For those who could not make it to the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery on Sept. 11 we wanted to report a very wonderful ceremony to dedicate the monument to the fallen that was held along the Memorial Path of the CCNC. Thank you again to all who made it possible, and we hope you will soon have a chance to

see this beautiful monument in person. About 55 people including the color guard from Shiloh Christian Academy in Melbourne attended the event and a special thanks to all those who came and were part of a moving program. Within a few days we expect a video of the event will be on YouTube and we will pass along that link as soon as we have it. Please help us spread the word about the community effort and newest monument at CCNC. Our very best regards, Jeanne and Donn Weaver Gold Star Parents Brevard County

I just wanted to drop you a note to thank you for your recent article, “the war is done--now we live with the consequences,” Op-Ed by Patrick McCallister, September 9, 2021. I believe the timeline of events about which you write will give all of us facts to form our own decisions about the past 20 years, no matter what individual opinions may be involved. These past decades have been extremely difficult for our country, especially the families of all who served, were injured or killed in the ensuing battles. I don’t think there is any doubt about that and I pray we can help those families heal, no matter how long that may take. I enjoy reading your articles; keep up the good work. Sincerely, Dianne Robbins Port St. Lucie

Man of war, man of peace

Peace Corps Act turns 60

Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

President and Lt. John F. Kennedy was a man who pulled strings to serve in the Navy during World War II despite getting a medically unacceptable rating from the military. He was a man who’d accept no easy out when his nation needed warriors. He was also a man who wanted to prevent the need for warriors to fight and die. He believed that healthy, hopeful, self-sufficient people are less likely to adopt radicalizing ideas that lead to violence. To that end, Kennedy established the Peace Corps by executive order in March of 1961. Congress then passed and Kennedy signed the Peace Corps Act on Sept. 22, 1961.

Kennedy’s military years As a child Kennedy dealt with several serious maladies, including whooping cough and measles, that left him with various physical problems. Those didn’t throw up roadblocks when he tried the join the Army and Navy in 1940. His now well-known spinal problems did. There are different speculations about what caused Kennedy lower back problems. No one is positive. However, Livesicence.com reports “there is consensus that he was probably hurt in 1937 while playing football.” Kennedy didn’t take the military’s rejection as anything but a speedbump. He unashamedly used his privileged position to tap influential people to help him get into the service anyhow. One was his father, Joseph Kennedy, who was the ambassador to Britain at the time. The unacceptable rating was overturned, and Kennedy got into the Navy Reserve on Sept. 24, 1941. The future president went on to serve in the South Pacific — most famously commanding the ill-fated PT-109 — during World War II. After that boat was torn apart by the destroyer Amagiri, the surviving crew shunned attempting to surrender to the Japanese for rescue. They opted to make a

dangerous 3.5-mile swim to Kasolo (Plum Pudding) Island, which has since been named Kennedy Island. That was only the first of the crew’s dangerous, long swims to get back to American lines and rejoin the war. After recovering from injuries, Kennedy went on to command PT-59 until a doctor had him sent back Stateside due to those back problems. Dragging an injured sailor through miles of water after the PT-109 sinking probably worsened them. Kennedy separated from the Navy in 1945. In 1946 Kennedy won his first election to the House of Representatives and served on its Veterans’ Affairs Committee. He won a Senate seat in the 1952 elections. Of course, he ran for and won the presidency in 1960.

Kennedy’s military legacy While Kennedy didn’t create the Army’s Special Forces, as many believe, he was a strong proponent of and enduring influence on the valued place of unconventional warfare and special operations in the Army. That’s why there’s the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg, N.C. While, too, the evolution of the Navy SEALs was underway when Kennedy took charge as Commander in Chief, the president was an enthusiastic supporter of the Navy having frogmen who could operate

from the sea, air or land. “I am directing the Secretary of Defense to expand rapidly and substantially, in cooperation with our allies, the orientation of existing forces for the conduct of non-nuclear war, paramilitary operations, and sub-limited or unconventional wars,” Kennedy said in a speech to Congress in 1961. “In addition, our special forces and unconventional warfare units will be increased and reoriented.” After the president was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963, Green Berets from Fort Bragg stood alongside members of the 3rd Infantry, The Old Guard, as his body lied in state at the East Room.

Kennedy’s peace legacy Kennedy wanted another elite force to combat human misery that breeds threats to democracy and human dignity and rights. The Peace Corps. The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum places the first presidential-candidate public comments about the then proposed Peace Corps on Oct. 14, 1960, at the University of Michigan. “How many of you, who are going to be doctors, are willing to spend your days in Ghana?,” Kennedy challenged his university audience. “Technicians or engineers, how many of you are willing to work in the Foreign Service and spend your lives traveling around the world?”

Kennedy wasn’t the first person to have the idea for a corps of highly trained volunteers to promote peace through service. In 1950 Walter Reuther, president of the United Auto Workers, penned an article, “A Proposal for a Total Peace Offensive,” suggesting what’d later be the Peace Corps. Kennedy intermittently echoed Reuther’s proposal through the 1950s. Sen. Brien McMahon strongly touted the concept of a Peace Corps throughout the 1950s. Sen. Herbert Humphrey — who’d go on to be Vice President — filed at least one bill to create the Peace Corps. That was in 1957. The Kennedy library explains, “A few days after he took office, Kennedy asked his brother-in-law, R. Sargent Shriver, to direct a Peace Corps Task Force. Shriver was known for his ability to identify and motivate creative, visionary leaders, and he led the group to quickly shape the organization. After a month of intense dialogue and debate among task force members, Shriver outlined seven steps to forming the Peace Corps in a memorandum to Kennedy in February 1961.” The corps matches skilled volunteers to participating countries’ needs in humanitarian, agricultural and infrastructure- and economic-development projects.

Operation Freedom’s Sentinel is ended, servicemembers have left Afghanistan. But there are still stressful deployments all over the world, and OASIS of Central Florida to tell those servicemembers America remembers them. “There are conflicts in Africa,” said cofounder Tess Brady Heribacka. “Even though we pulled out of Afghanistan, we have servicemembers in the surrounding countries.” Along with places such as South Korea. “We just had a (Florida) National Guard unit return from the southern (U.S.) border,” Heribacka said. Friday to Sunday, Oct. 1 to 3, OASIS will have its biannual garage sale fundraiser at 2526 Tomoka Ave., Titusville. That’s a new location for the garage sales. The sale will go from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, then 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. Veteran Voice readers who wish to donate items can contact cofounder@oasisofcfl.org.

Operation America Standing in Support Heribacka and a few others around Brevard County started Operation America Standing in Support, OASIS, 16 years ago. Its primary mission is to create and

send care packages along with cards and letters to servicemembers deployed in the war on terrorism. OASIS does six mass mailings a year. They’re keyed to holidays — Valentine’s Day, Easter, Independence Day, Halloween, Veterans Day and Christmas. “The next packaging event will be Oct. 9 at 9 (a.m.) at the (Veterans Memorial Center) on Merritt Island,” said Heribacka. “We will be boxing up packages for Halloween.” The center is at 400 S. Sykes Creek Parkway, Merritt Island. Impromptu volunteers are welcomed. “We offer community service points for students and adults,” Heribacka said. The number of packages sent at each mass mailing depends mostly on how many servicemembers’ addresses the organization has. “We’re always seeing addresses of deployed military and seeking cards of appreciation for our military,” said Heribacka. People can provide servicemembers’ addresses at www.oasisofcfl.org. In addition to seeking garage-sale items for donation, OASIS is always seeking donations for the care packages. It has a short list of what it won’t take and send to servicemembers. Basically pork, porn and alcohol. The Department of Defense bans those items in care packages. While some care-package organizations refuse to send tobacco products, OASIS doesn’t. Heribacka said cigars are especially popular among the military per-

sonnel that receive them. Other popular consumables are: Powdered drink mixes; hot chocolate; gum and mints; wrapped fruit snacks; Slim Jim and other dried meat snacks; granola bars and other grain snacks; microwavable popcorn; and— “Tabasco sauce,” Heribacka said in a previous interview. “That’ll kill any MRE teste.” Other popular items are— Razors; dental floss; nail care products; along with socks and T-shirts. Deployed personnel often don’t have access to broadband, and that makes for one of the things they love getting — DVDs.

Col. Matthew J. Hearon ROTC Scholarship OASIS also annually gives a $10,000 scholarship to a graduating Junior ROTC member. What’s unusual about the group’s Col. Matthew J. Hearon ROTC Scholarship is students going straight to college, or into the military first. Hearon, who lived in Volusia’s Edgewater. He served in the Army for three years, then the Florida National Guard for 32. He’s interred at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery. “He was the commander of the Florida National Guard 163th (Air Defense Artillery) Brigade,” Heribacka said. “He left this world unexpectedly five years ago.” That scholarship is open to all Florida high schools with Junior ROTC programs.

Bradley Derflinger, command center supervisor, Sector Charleston. “Everyone involved is extremely thankful a worst-case scenario turned out to be a successful mission.”

A Coast Guard Station Charleston rescue crew saved two people after their vessel caught fire and began taking on water approximately 9 miles east of Bulls Bay, last week. The captain of the vessel, Strictly Business, hailed Sector Charleston watchstanders via marine radio Channel 16 at 4:03 a.m., stating his 45-foot fishing vessel was on fire and taking on water. The captain activated his Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and switched to his satellite phone after losing communication on his VHF radio. The station rescue crew transported the men to Coast Guard Station Charleston where local EMS was awaiting and treated the men on scene. “Getting accurate and corresponding information from the initial call over channel 16 combined with the use of an EPIRB directly impacted the outcome of this case and we were able to know where they were located,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer

Tribute Tables spring up around Veteran Voice readership to honor the 13 who died in Kabul Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com

On Aug. 29, 13 U.S. servicemembers were killed in a suicide attack at Kabul, Afghanistan. Eleven were Marines, one was a Navy corpsman and one was a Soldier. Two were women. Please visit our Gone But Not Forgotten graphic to view their names. Something happened afterward around the Veteran Voice readership, something completely spontaneous and yet completely caring. AMVETS posts, American Legion posts, VFW posts all set up Tribute Tables, some with one glass of beer for each of the casualties, some with a bottle of beer. Some featured photos of the servicemembers, most featured American flags. It is another clear sign that Veterans care for their own. You may be familiar with the POW-MIA Tables of the Missing that many posts have permanently set up. These Tribute Tables are similar, though they aren’t destined to last. They’re simply a way for Veterans to show their deep emotion at the loss of their brothers and sisters in such a terrible way. We share some of the photos of the Tribute Tables from our readership. Our circulation associate Wayne Newland, Air Force Veteran, took a number of photos, and AMVETS Post 92 provided a photo by Kimberly Thompson-Wilson. We are all grateful for the ultimate sacrifice paid by our 13 brothers and sisters, and pray that their families have all the love and support they need at such a time. Our Gold Star Mothers and Families understand, and have asked Veterans to check on fellow Veterans and their families to make sure they are coping as well as they can. Veteran Service Organizations are a good place to start. Here is a list: Indian River County Veterans Services Offices and Veterans Service Providers Vero Beach: 2525 St Lucie Ave

David Schopler The Peace Corps courts military veterans to volunteer. One man who’s served in the military and corps is David Schopler. In 2018 he wrote for the corps’ website — www. peacecorps.gov — “Thoughts on Veterans Day from a Volunteer-turned-Navy SEAL.” “I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines and then an officer in the SEAL Teams, where I still serve as a reservist. An unusual career path to be sure, but one that fit my ideals of national service and helping others, both imbued in me by my parents. While you suspend your disbelief at the seeming dichotomy, I submit that the

Peace Corps and SEALs are not really that different. Both organizations seek peace – one is just a little more aggressive in its pursuit. “A list of some of my experiences while serving might explain the similarities and commonalities: I helped establish a literacy program for adult women; I conducted medical checkups for a poor village; I shared drinks with village elders and discussed community projects in the local language; I conducted swimming and snorkeling training; and I appeared in a movie. “Now if you’re thinking all but the last two were in the Peace Corps, you’d be mistaken. My platoon helped start a literacy program in Al Anbar province in Iraq, and the poor village was in Afghanistan.” Americans have served in 141 countries in the Peace Corps.

Annual report shows drop in death by suicide among Veterans Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Death by suicide among Veterans recently hit its lowest level since 2007 according to the VA. But, the Department of Veteran Affairs’ blog, VAntage Point, reads — “This latest data shows reasons to be encouraged, but VA remains focused on the mission as there is more work to be done.” The VA released the “2021 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report” on Sept. 8. The report has numerous positive numbers. However, it’s important to note that apparent successes in reducing deaths by suicide in one year could be temporary. The 2021 report includes no weeks affected by the SARSCoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic. Next year’s annual report will include the pandemic era.

Highlights There were 6,261 known deaths by suicide among Veterans in 2019, the last year covered in the report. That’s 399 fewer deaths than in 2018. That puts the 2019 daily number of Veterans suicide deaths at 17.2. The annual report included data from 2001 to 2019. The 2019 Veteran suicide rate

was 31.6 per 100,000. That contrasts to a rate of 16.8 per 100,000 in the non-Veteran adult population. There are 254 million adults in the U.S. About 18 million are Veterans, 7 percent of the adult population. Nationally there were 45,861 deaths by suicide among adults in 2019. The majority of deaths by suicide among Veterans are among those who had “no (Veterans Health Administration) encounters in 2018 or 2019.” They averaged 10.4 deaths by suicide a day in 2019. Those with VHA encounters averaged 6.8 suicides a day. A couple years ago the Department of Defense and VA changed some reporting to separate servicemembers in and Veterans of the National Guard and reserves who were never federally activated or called up for extended service. This was due to differences in services available to that group. The change, however, dropped the average number of daily deaths by suicide among Veterans reported in the “National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report” by about 1.5 a day.

2019. There were 577 Veterans’ suicide deaths in 2018. In 2017 there were 512. According to the 2021 VA report, after accounting for age differences the rate of death by suicide among Florida Veterans was not significantly different from the national rate. There are about 1.5 million Veterans in Florida, 8.3 percent of the national population. The majority of those deaths were among men — 524. The state has the largest population of women Veterans in the nation, according to the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs. That’s 162,000, or nearly 11 percent of the state’s Veterans population. According to the VA, 29 women Veterans in Florida died by suicide in 2019. Overall, the state had 3,386 deaths by suicide in 2019. The reporting doesn’t clarify if that includes children and teenagers or not. The largest age group for those suicides was 55- to 74-year olds. That was true for both the general and Veterans-specific groupings. In 2019 there were 1,183 deaths by suicide among 55to 74-year olds in the state. Veterans accounted for 236 of those deaths.

Florida Veterans in crises — along with their family, friends

and advocates — have a few resources to seek immediate help. One is the Florida Veterans’ Care Coordination Program at 1-844-MyFLVet (6935838). That is a statewide 211-type number answered by Florida Veterans. In addition to being equipped to help Veterans find mental-health support, it can assist with referrals to help with emergency financial needs. Veterans experiencing any mental-health crisis can also call the Department of Veteran Affairs’ Veterans Crisis Line at (800) 273-8255, extension 1. Veterans can also contact the crisis line by texting 838255, or by visiting www.VeteransCrisisLine.net. Friends and family members can also call the Veterans Crisis Line if they’re concerned about a Veteran. If a Veteran — or anyone — seems to be immediate danger of harming her- or himself, call 911 and stay with the person. Be prepared to give first responders succinct information about the person’s mental-health history, current stressors, and any behavioral patterns that can seem threatening when they’re not, such as exaggerated hand gestures when stressed. The “2021 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Report” is available at www.mentalhealth.va.gov.

Remembering the Pentagon on 9/11 Memorial assigns deep meaning to each of those who lost their lives, in the air or on land Lights illuminate the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial as the sun sets in Arlington, Va., Sept. 10, 2014. The Pentagon Memorial was created to remember and honor those lost at the Pentagon Sept. 11, 2001.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

On Sept. 11, 2001, American Airlines Flight 77 was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon, killing all 64 people on the plane and 125 people in the Pentagon. The Pentagon Memorial is the first national memorial dedicated to honoring the 184 people whose lives were lost at the Pentagon that day, their families, and all those who sacrifice so that we may live in freedom. The Pentagon Memorial design was developed by Julie Beckman and Keith Kaseman. Their vision for the memorial was selected from more than 1,100 submissions by a panel of architects, family members and public figures in the Washington, D.C. area, including two former secretaries of defense. The Pentagon Memorial captures a specific moment in time - 9:37 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001, when 184 souls were lost. The $22 million memorial sits on two acres of land right outside where the jetliner struck the building. There are 184 memorial benches dedicated to each of the victims, and they’re organized in a timeline of their ages, from the youngest victim, 3-year-old Dana Falkenberg, to the oldest, 71-year-old John Yamnicky. Each memorial unit includes a cantile-

vered bench engraved with a victim’s name and a lighted pool of flowing water. The benches are made of stainless steel and inlaid with smooth granite, and each bench is inscribed with a victim’s name on the end and arches over a shallow reflecting pool of water, lit from below. The benches for the 59 jetliner passengers are positioned so a visitor will face the sky when reading the victim’s name. Those dedicated to the victims inside the building have the victim’s name and the Pentagon in the same view.

The site also has a curved wall, aptly dubbed the Age Wall, which increases in height to represent the ages of the victims, starting at 3 inches to represent the youngest victim and growing to 71 inches to represent the oldest victim. There are 85 paperbark maple trees clustered throughout the memorial, with foliage that changes to brilliant oranges and reds in the fall. The paperbark maples will eventually grow to 30 feet to provide a canopy of shade over the area. Ornamental grasses mark the memorial’s boundaries.
