teatro brasileiro. Isto só viria a acontecer, lentamente, a partir aos anos 1940. Um marco é a montagem õe Vestido de Molva, com Os Comediantes, sob âlreÇão ao polonês Zlemblnskl, com a InovaÇao cénica realizada por Tomás Santa Rosa. Cenógrafo, flgurinlste, pintor, artista gráfico* foi ele o responsável pela ilustração de capa do catálogo õa I Bienal de São Paulo, em 1951. E, assiir. como Oswald de Andrade Filho e Clóvis Oraclano, 1'azla parte do Conselho de Administração do MAM, e de uma geraÇao que amplia o intercâmbio entre as artes plásticas e cénicas.

Os anos 1950 caminham em plena efervescência da cena teatral, apesar disso, os projetos de teatro ainda eram raros dentro das três primeiras edições ua Bienal de São Paulo. Em 1955, o autor, ator e entusiasta Agostinho Olavo-ftoôrlgues,

recebe um pedido do l&Ak para organizar, junto com Santa Rosa, uma retrospectiva de cenografia brasileira a partir ao aparecimento dos Comediantes1. Sempre presente nas colunas sociais, o agitador cultural assumia como proposta divulgar as obras âe arte brasileiras no país e no exterior, Idealizando o kovlmento Brasileiro de Arte*. Km alguns anos, ele assume um lugar decisivo que faz eco ao desejo do fundador da Bienal, tornando-se flgura-chave para a participação dos criadores da cena brasileiros em exposiÇÕes dentro e fora do Brasil.

Com o assíõuo destaque recebido por seus artistas, a Tchecoslováqula demonstrou Interesse em lamber, sedlar o evento. Acontece que o prazo òe dois anos não parecia Ideal para uma participação rr.alor e significativa dos países ua América Latina, e a distância entre Brasil e Europa dificultava a vinda ao artista europeu a CBÔB ôols anos. Além disso, desde 1965, a Bienal sofria de perto os efeitos do golpe militar e da repressão política no país, o que fez com que as participações diminuíssem, comprometenõo a exposição. A FundaÇao Bienal de São Paulo (pelo presidente Francisco katarazzo Sobrinho) lhes ofereceu o direito de receber uma exposição internacional cenográflca, na Europa, a caõa quatro anos. A proposta foi aceita e, em 1967, aconteceria a l* Quadrienal de Praga. O acordo

foi fechado com o Embaixaôor ôa República Socialista da Tchecoslovóqula no Brasil.4 A Bienal de Teatro ainda teria mais duas eálÇoes como parte da Bienal de São Paulo, em anos intercalados com a PQ. Em 1969, alem das obras de vários artistas brasileiros renomados, há uma sala especial para projetos de arqultetura teatral e um setor dedicado aos fantoches, marionetes brasileiros e pesquisas folclóricas.

Em 1973, a exposição é composta por trabalhos de cenografia, indumentária, acústica teatral, arqultetura, ôanÇa-comunlcaÇão. Daí em diante, as artes plásticas do teatro possuem várias participações ao longo cie história da Bienal õe São Paulo, porém não mais como parte de um evento específico. Este passou a se concentrar no grande encontro na clòade de Praga, a cada quatro anos.

Thenueforth, theater plastic arts were part of Bienal ãe São Paulo tr.any tiir.e throughout its history, however no longer as part of an speclfic event. A Quadrienal de Praga objetlva apresentar o lugar específico da cenografia, sua relaÇão «atreita com a encenação e com todos os elementos que compõem uma obra dramática* e ressaltar seu caráter sintético. Ao contrário da Bienal das Artes Plásticas do Teatro» em dão Paulo, - em que os principais critérios de apreciação õas obras expostas são os aspectos que correspondem às artes plásticas - evidentemente pelo lato desta seÇão estar incluída na Bienal de São Paulo de Belas Artes. Ao longo cie seus quarenta e oito anos ue existência* desde 1967* é possível perceber e recorrência ue várias questões em caõa edição ÕB Quadrienal de Praga. A mais comum seria a necessérlB ôecisão do 'quê* expor. Na l" PQ - e ainda hoje - muitos países escolher, levar personalidades para revelar seu teatro contemporâneo. O Brasil t o l uir. deles, quando o Conselho Artístico da Bienal de Teatro escolheu o cenógrafo e arquiteto Flavlo Império* preir.lauo com a Medalha de Ouro na Bienal de Teatro 1965> como representante do modernismo do jovem teatro brasileiro.

Um outro tema em constante debate é 'como' expor cenografia. "O que acontece com a cenografia no 'local' da exposição? É um documento ou uma produção? Ou se torna um artefato independente? S o que, então, Iro nos relatar?"'

Durante a Bienal de Teatro, e por muitos anos, a cenografia é apresentada por melo de croquis, maquetas, sistemas Iconográflcos dispostos em painéis expositlvos. Um dos destaques do Brasil na primeira individual na PQ foi pelo

fato da "sala" ter sido consiáeraàa inovadora, Já que os materiais foram expostos em espaÇo projetado pelo próprio ílávlo Império e o arqulteto Rodrigo Lefevre, assinalando ali um despertar para 0'projeto expositlvo. Novas formas de contextuallzaÇao ainda estão em plena descoberta.

Essa provocaÇao cresce desde a PQ'll e se afirmará nesta PQ'l5, quando, pela primeira vez, a P3 ocupará o centro de Praga, acontecendo em diversos locais e se relacionando também com os espaÇqs da cidade.

A forma exposltiva pensada para a fttostra Nacional Brasileira em £011 recebe destaque do' júri porque "apreciou também es soluÇoes engenhosas para resolver e adaptar os trabalhos expostos*3. A curadoria buscava uma ftorma de

A présenÇa brasileira neste encontro quadrienal, entre altos e baixos, é uma constante. Na l' PQ, o Comissário Geral do Brasil e autor Agostinho Olavo-Rodrlgues assumiu a representação Brasileira, convidado pelo ServlÇo Nacional de Teatro, sob os auspícios do, Ministério de Educação e Cultura. Seguiu nesta lunÇão como representante da UNESCO e

colaborador multo próximo à coordenação da Bienal de Artes de são Paulo, por cinco ediÇÕes, inclusive como membro do júri.

Mesmo com uma representação oficial, a ,* cenografia 'Brasileira não deixaria forte marca na história da F'« por ura longo tempo, depois de Elchbauer.

Em 1974, mais ae 400 textos teatrais são retidos pela crescente censura e o Teatro Oficina é invadido.
