Kristof Vrancken

(*1982, Hasselt, Belgium)

studied Photography at the Media and Design Academy in Genk, where he took up the position of Lecturer in Photography in 2008. His other occupations include freelance and art photography. He has been doing the Z33 exhibition photography since 2005 and is widely acknowledged as one of the top exhibition photographers in Flanders.

The images that he has chosen are pictures that he made last year at Z33 and Manifesta 9, reflecting on concepts as dynamicism, ‘emerging’ and the ‘in between’.

CIAP is an independent association for contemporary art. CIAP was founded in 1976 and its operating methods are very comparable to the German model of the Kunstverrein, a model that is not well known in Flanders.

An artistic reaction on the economical situation of the region. After the recent closing of big industries, CIAP invites artists to look forward and present future opportunities.

CIAP aims to respond to the local art scene in a two-way direction, on the one hand by presenting from within the local context towards a larger (eu)regional public and on the other hand by boosting the local artists, art-professionals and public by showing innovative international artistic developments.

AN EDUCATIONAL NOVEL OF THE IKOB COLLECTION. THE EARLY YEARS 0-20

her book “Iran interrupted” edited by Hatje Cantz, Beatrice Minda shows photographies of her journeys through the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In 2013, the ikob – Museum of Contemporary Art celebrates its 20th anniversary and starts a new stage of life. Built as an “educational novel”, this exhibition tells the story of the hero “ikob”, his accomplishment and confrontation with his environment and through his collection.

Within the scope of the publication of The ikob – Museum of Contemporary Art in Eupen is located in the German-speaking part of Belgium, nearby the German and Dutch borders.

Its program focuses on emerging and leading contemporary art through the constitution of a significant collection – in progress – and

temporary exhibitions – in Dialog.

Thus, functioning as a discursive platform for contemporary art with a multidisciplinary and thematic exhibition program, concerned with critical and socio-political issues, the ikob attempts to reflect the matter of frontier.

In light of the current space race, Space Odyssey 2.0 presents new stories and collaborative DIY practices where science and fiction meet.

SARAH & CHARLES: THE SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF June 30 → October 13, 2013 The artist duo Sarah & Charles creates worlds that are both familiar and strange, inhabited by invisible protagonists. Their installations consist of decors that evoke dream-like images and where fiction meets reality. Z33 invites Sarah & Charles to present their first large solo exhibition.

DESIGN BEYOND PRODUCTION May 5 → August 18, 2013 Design exhibition that focuses on the political dimension of existing or near-future production processes and the way it affects the human being as a maker inscribed in these processes. Also on show at the Design week in Milan.

Z33 is a house for contemporary art. Since 2002, Z33 creates projects and exhibitions which encourage the visitor to take a different look at everyday life. It is a unique laboratory and a meeting space for experiments and innovation that makes ground-breaking exhibitions featuring contemporary art and design.

Z33 does not have its own collection, but has a permanent exhibition offer. You can visit Z33 in the beguinage of Hasselt. Z33 also develops projects in public space and curates projects for external organisations.

For each exhibition, Z33 develops a tailored programme for families, teachers, teenagers and children, aimed at individuals as well as groups.

Bonnefantenmuseum THE BIG CHANGE. REVOLUTIONS IN RUSSIAN PAINTING 1895-1917 March 12 → August 11, 2013 The Bonnefantenmuseum exudes the atmosphere of the revolutionary blossoming of Russian culture at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century. Paintings by famous names such as Kazimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin and Wassily Kandinsky will be presented alongside works by lesser-known artists like Natalia Goncharova, Ilya Mashkov and Vasili Denisov.

Her art works have symbolic overtones, and in them she plays with a distinctive mix of folk art and exoticism, combined with elements originating from memories of her childhood on Curaçao.

CRAEYVANGER FAMILY PORTRAITS February 22 → September 1, 2013 The Bonnefantenmuseum will display ten exceptional portraits of the famliy Craeyvanger. The paintings are the only known series of portraits of the members of a single family - father, mother and eight children - to have survived from the seventeenth century.

Through the Vineland is a solo exhibition of paintings by Keetje Mans (Amsterdam, 1979), who lives and works in Maastricht.

The Bonnefantenmuseum has an old art and contemporary art collection. The old art on display includes works by medieval sculptor Jan van Steffeswert, early Netherlands and Italian paintings. The contemporary art collection consists of art works by internation-

ally renowned artists, related to movements such as Concept, Minimal Art and Arte Povera. The spectacular museum building is designed by Aldo Rossi. The museum also offers various guided tours and activities for children.

A SELECTION FROM THE CENTER FOR SOCIAL RESEARCH ON OLD TEXTILES (CSROT) March 16 → May 19, 2013 Tradition presents a selection from the elaborate collection of historic textiles assembled by Seth Siegelaub over the past thirty years for the CSROT. The selection is presented alongside the artworks of Oorebeek, Skaer and Williams.

Marres is a centre for contemporary culture in Maastricht. Marres initiates exhibitions, lectures, research, projects and publications, rooted in a cultural, philosophical background and with a specific interest in the problem of actuality. The relation with the immediate local environment is often employed as a means to refine a more uni-

versal agenda in order to produce innovative exhibition models.

THE MACABRE TREASURY January 20 → May 5, 2013 The American artist Mark Dion (New Bedford, Massachusetts, 1961) is internationally acclaimed as one of today’s most prominent artists. He is playing a pioneering role with his work which focuses on ecological issues and our perception of nature. For The Macabre Treasury Dion transformed Museum Het Domein’s contemporary art wing into a giant Wunderkabinett.

PATRICIA JOHANSON. THE WORLD AS A WORK OF ART September 28, 2013 → January 26, 2014 For the past thirty years Patricia Johanson’s multidisciplinary designs have combined art, ecology, landscaping, and functional infrastructure. The retrospective of her work at Museum Het Domein is Johanson’s first solo museum exhibition in Europe.

Days of Glory is a retrospective of work by the Chilean artist Eugenio Dittborn – his first solo museum exhibition in Europe in over a decade. It starts with work he completed in 1993 on

VANHEISTINHEERLEN April 20 → August 4, 2013 In the exhibition VANHEISTINHEERLEN fashion designer Monique van Heist explores the socio-cultural history of the former Department store Schunck and the role that Schunck (founded in 1935) has played in over 30 years that it was an icon of Heerlen. The exhibition shows the collection of Monique van Heist and draws in addition from the rich past and the cultural heritage of SouthLimburg.

MARTINE STIG — CAUCHY HORIZONS April 20 → August 4, 2013

Stig is fascinated by the imagery and cinematic clichés of science fiction that inspired her futuristic photographs of Tunis, Shenzhen, Geneva and Athens.

ANDREAS EMENIUS Starting August 24, 2013 The Danish artist Andreas Emenius lives and works in Copenhagen and presents at SCHUNCK* an installation that combines visual art, objects, music and a performance with the Danish band Trentemøller.

Themes in his work are (amongst others) illusion and movement.

Martine Stig photographs cities in transition where something happened that changed perspectives drastically. Martine

SCHUNCK* is a multidisciplinary cultural institution that aspires to act as a dynamo for a discerning and critical artistic and cultural encounter between local districts and the world at large, within the context of the southern Dutch Euro region. SCHUNCK* assembles a fully-fledged professional museum

of modern and contemporary art, a research and presentation centre for architecture and town planning, a public library and a music school.

Housed in the Glaspaleis, a unique (and famous) edifice built by the architect Frits Peutz in 1935.

Erik Schmidt (*1968, lives in Berlin) takes a critical look on the OccupyWall-Street-Movement in his paintings, drawings and film works. The exhibition is accompanied by earlier works of the everyday life of plantation workers in Israel. A catalog (German/English) is published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König.

ARTIST PORTRAITS – THE FRERICH COLLECTION March 10 → May 19, 2013

The collection of the Cologne dentist Dr Günter Frerich is the newest acquisition of the museum and encompasses 400 prints and drawings from the late 19th century to the end of the 20th century. The focus is placed on Expressionism and New Objectivity, but it furthermore includes works by such international artists as Lovis Corinth, Otto Dix or Carl Hofer.

Founded in 1905, the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum and its new extension, completed in 2010 by the architect Peter Kulka, features collections of modern works, including examples of ZERO and Concrete Art from the Hubertus Schoeller Foundation and contemporary positions from the Günter Peill Foundation.

Mary Bauermeisters (*1934) processes of working and reflection in her years of study, which took place immediately before the legendary times with Karlheinz Stockhausen are the focus. For the first time, newly accessed archive material and documents from the 1950s will be compared to her artworks. A catalog will be published.

SILKE LEVERKÜHNE. GRÜNE ERDE AN BERG BLAU June 9 → August 18, 2013

The exhibition presents an overview of recent work by artist and art professor Silke Leverkühne (*1953).

New paintings will be compared to some chosen examples of her earlier work series; completed by drawings and photographs. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog.

United under a dual museum concept, the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum and the Papermuseum Düren have formed a globally-oriented platform for showcasing contemporary art in the 21st century and the cultural history of paper in form of interdisciplinary exhibitions.

ILKA HELMIG — PHÉNOTYPE

Peter and Irene Ludwig started collecting American art during the 1960s in New York. Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Chuck Close and Duane Hanson are names that have immensely contributed to the popularity of the Ludwig collection. The exhibition shows rarely exhibited pieces and unusual works by famous artists of the collection.

Ilka Helmig (*1971) works on the borderline between art and design. Since 2007 she has taught visual conception and drawing at the polytechnic in Aachen. For the Ludwig Forum, she develops a site specific project that occupies the space and explores shapes and structures of the museum and the surroundings by means of drawing and sculpture.

BEA OTTO — OUT THERE

Michael Edward Smith (*1977 in Detroit) makes objects, images and videos that condense the material qualities and references of the chosen material into an often uncanny physicality that is loaded with associations. Very different objects – sometimes with obvious references to sport and music idols of the Afro-American youth culture – are processed and “abandoned” in the exhibition room.

In her works, Bea Otto (*1964) directly refers to the location. Her laconic but precise interventions question and transform the space.

The borders between interior and exterior are shifted, passages are blocked and holes created, threshold situations and ruptures appear. Barreness expands.

The Ludwig Forum Aachen is a multi-genre house for international contemporary art. Its basis is the art collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig that comprises key works of American Pop Art, Photo Realism and European art from the beginning 1960s to the present. CORIN SWORN “THE RAG PAPERS” April 14 → June 9, 2013 NAK will present the first institutional solo exhibition in Germany of the Canadian-Scottish artist Corin Sworn who represents Scotland at this year’s Venice Biennial.

It will be Sworn’s largest and most ambitious exhibition to date and comprises a film embedded in an installation with synchronised lighting and sound.

KARL LARSSON April 17 → April 22, 2013 Swedish artist Karl Larsson will present NAK at this years Art Cologne with a new installation as well as the release of the German translation of “FORM/FORCE”, published with Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne.

NAK. Neuer Aachener Kunstverein is one of the youngest institutions of it’s kind in Germany; a private non-profit association for contemporary art in the tradition of the German Kunstverein model. NAK was founded in 1986 as a late echo of the 1964

Fluxus festival, with Joseph Beuys and Wolf Vostell as center protagonist at the local university in Aachen. The spirit of this moment has since been source of commitment to contemporary art.

Regular Events

Art does not need a common language,

it is international by itself.

The association of twelve institutions of in the Meuse-Rhine Region is therefore as contemporary as the art they present. Within a radius of 100 km, the border region of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany offers a large diversity of exhibitions and events many of which can be visited in one day. The locations each have a very individual approach and present art in the most appealing way: direct and inspirational, reflective and in a special atmosphere. This brochure wants to increase the awareness of what this region has to offer in terms of visual arts.

It is published twice per year and gives an overview of exhibitions and events.
