In Short

Park ‘n’ Run “Free, for everyone, forever”, parkrun sees participants all over the world take part in weekly, timed 5-km running events in local parks and open spaces. Though a competitive event, it is open to all ages and abilities in the hope of encouraging not just physical activity, but community engagement too. Since its establishment in London’s Bushy Park in 2004, the small running event has blossomed into a global movement with more than 2,500 events in more than 20 countries – including 42 races in Aotearoa – all organised by volunteers. “I have always been passionate about physical activity and community development, and parkrun has given me the opportunity to combine these in an amazing way,” says Dr Andrew Boyd, parkrun’s first volunteer Health and Wellbeing Ambassador in New Zealand. Earlier this year, UK athlete Andy Butchart set a new world record of 13 minutes 45 seconds at Edinburgh’s Silverknowes parkrun – his first attempt at the event. “I've never been to a parkrun and so I didn't know what to expect,” he told Runner’s World . “So, it was a fun morning, that's for sure!”

Science of Soothing

Egyptian tomb paintings show that massage therapy was in use by the ancient civilisation way back in 2,500 BC, having arrived from the East. The oldest known written text dates from India around 500 years earlier, where massage was adopted into Ayurveda medicine by Hindus, a practice that translates as ‘life science’ still widely used today. Also, still in use by many a massage trainer is The Yellow Emperor’s Classic Book of Internal Medicine, published in 2,700 BC. There’s plenty of modern science to back up a practice promoted by ancient greats such as Hippocrates. Research has shown that the kneading of muscles and soft tissue stimulates the production of mitochondria which are known as the energy-generating powerhouses of the cell. Other studies have shown massage to reduce pain, tension, and even lower blood pressure and heart rates while combating mental issues like stress and anxiety. While massage has been proven to massively aid muscle recovery, the notion that it clears lactic acid build-up is a myth – our bodies do this naturally.

A Labour of Travel

Defined as a commute that takes more than 90 minutes one way, the ‘super-commute’ was once seen as a fast-track way to increasing stress and reducing wellbeing. But with hybrid working models becoming ever more commonplace, it’s being embraced as a positive lifestyle choice that allows people to move away from the seemingly never-ending skyrocketing costs of living in urban centres to lead quieter lives in the countryside while making the mammoth trip into the office just a couple of days per week. Since 2020, nearly five million Americans have moved because working remotely has enabled them to do so, while across the ditch more Aussies left major cities in 2021 than at any time during the previous 20 years. Though it’s a model mainly limited to higher-paid professionals, Robert Pozen, senior lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management, says it’s here to stay. “The super-commuters are mainly knowledge professionals who don't have to be physically present every day,” he tells the BBC. “That’s about half the workers in the US.”

Packing the Protein

Proteins comprise amino acids that build and repair bone and muscle, as well as making hormones and enzymes and even serving as an energy source. Some amino acids can be recycled from proteins that have been broken down, but the rest of our protein intake comes through diet. Foods high in protein include beef, chicken, salmon, nuts, egg, and beans. Though animal proteins are generally of higher quality, those following a plant-based diet can meet their protein requirements by combining complementary sources of amino acids such as rice and beans. Signs of not getting enough protein include swelling, mood changes, fatigue, and hair, nail, and skin issues. At the very least, 10% of our daily calorie intake should come from protein – a popular calculation is to consume 0.8g of protein for every kilogram of body weight (so a 70kg person requires around 55g of protein). For context, 10g of protein is the equivalent of half-a-cup of Greek yoghurt, one cup of cooked quinoa, or two small eggs. A deck-of-cards-sized piece of meat contains around 30g of protein.

Cancel Cancer

A recently published study in BMJ Oncology of more than a million people around the word found that the number of under-50s diagnosed with cancer has increased by almost 80% in the last 30 years – and is projected to rise by a further 21% by 2030. Some of the most worrying figures came from North America, western Europe, and Oceania. “Encouraging a healthy lifestyle, including a healthy diet, the restriction of tobacco and alcohol consumption and appropriate outdoor activity, could reduce the burden of early onset cancer,” says the study, which also concludes that genetic factors will also have played a role. Dr Christopher Flowers, an oncologist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, tells CBS that the numbers are “remarkable” and advises that “younger individuals who meet screening criteria to consider and pursue screening at age-appropriate times”. Dr Claire Knight, a senior health information manager at Cancer Research UK, tells the Guardian, that though the results are alarming cancer remains “primarily a disease of older age, with the majority of new cancer cases worldwide being diagnosed in those aged 50 and above”.

Buying Youth

Forty-five-year-old multimillionaire tech founder Bryan Johnson made headlines twice recently, first for revealing that he’d been receiving blood transfusions from younger people – including his son – in an attempt to reverse the ageing process, and then for announcing that he’d discontinued the treatment as it hadn’t yielded significant benefits. Though, his doctors did tell Bloomberg that tests had shown he had the heart of a 37-year-old and the lungs of an 18-year-old – but this may be down to his strict daily exercise and wellness routine that includes only eating between 6am and 11am and consuming exactly 1,977 calories. Johnson joins a long line of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs obsessed with immortality, including Peter Theil who has given millions to the Methuselah Foundation in the hope of making “90 the new 50 by 2030” as well as signing up to the Alcor Life Extension Foundation which keeps corpses frozen until a time when scientists have figured out how to bring you back from the dead, because “a fulfilling life doesn’t have to end”.

Editors’ Notes

I have so enjoyed rewatching Dan Beuttner’s Secrets of the Blue Zones docuseries in which he highlights the immense benefits of getting into the garden, which include keeping active while cultivating edibles for a mostly plant-based diet. So, it's with great satisfaction that we open the October issue with a look at a botanical life and alfresco living, soul food for many – including myself. Landscaper Xanthe White, featured on page 30, aptly sums up this sentiment when she says: “A beautiful landscape activates wellness, particularly in terms of mental health. Take it a step further into active gardening and it becomes a holistic cure for just about everything.”

Upholding the theme of self-care and lush green surrounds, our feature on Self-Love includes a look at Eden Retreat in Queensland. The general manager, Shona Phillips, reveals how a few small changes to her lifestyle remarkably saw her lose 55kg over a three-year period. She also touches on Eden’s owner and philanthropist Robert Christie, who has done so much for this notable health and wellness community.

Talking of philanthropists – I cannot wait to share with you a wonderful journey to the Wairarapa where Bill Foley has created his own eden in the form of Wharekauhau. Comprising multiple vineyards and the brand new Runholder, it’s the Wairarapan answer to exquisite food, fine wines and original gin, and is coming up in the November issue.

There’s no avoiding that fact that 2023, for various reasons, has been a challenging year for many, and while it’s so easy to dwell on the negative, I prefer to look at the overwhelming positives that abound. Soon the election will be behind us, and the promise of a super warm summer ahead will be a reality. May the coming months be a time of positivity and abundance for you all.

I often reflect on my first experience with what I think might have been love, back when I was just 16 years old. At that time, I wasn’t entirely sure if it truly was love, and to this day, I grapple with the definition of that most mysterious of words, but I believe it certainly revolves around caring and kindness.

Dating back in the 1970s was a world apart from the modern scene; how those times seem so innocent now! We’d hop on a bus and head to the nightclubs of Auckland to dance the night away – and there wasn’t a drop of alcohol involved. We’d leave the club and get the last bus home at 11:30pm.

I also recall a rather special moment when the head prefect asked me to the school ball! I was only in the third form at the time and had to get special permission from my parents – and even from the school. Another memorable moment was when I was asked out by a 15-year-old boy who had very long hair. Mum and I were so incredibly worried that my father would not allow me to go so she sprang into action as soon as there was the knock on the door, and I was away before Dad had a chance to get out of his chair!

We’d be picked up and dropped off at home, and relied on good old-fashioned phone calls before texting was even a concept. Whether those simple, halcyon days were better days is a question to ponder. They were just different, marked by their own unique charm and traditions. I do love the way that with my children it was all about honesty and openness – I thought I knew what was going on, but I’m sure I missed a lot as well!

So, here’s to modern love… whatever that is.

Local Market Update

Robyn Ellson of Ray White, Mount Eden

We’re seeing buyers returning to our auction rooms. In particular, large, renovated family homes in the city fringe suburbs of Sandringham, Kingsland, Mount Eden, Grey Lynn, and Westmere are seeing huge numbers of registered bidders, with several of our auctions registering over 10 buyers in the last three months. Auction success rates have had a dramatic turnaround from the slumpy market that was 2022. My team and I our proud of our 92% auction success for the last four months. So, if you’ve been thinking of selling but not sure if the market will be there for your home, the time to talk to a trusted agent, consistently achieving in your local area, is now.

Thinking of selling in spring or summer? Here are my quick tips on preparing your home for market:

‘Marie Kondo’ your house: Spring clean and then spring clean again. Donate items no longer needed in your home to the local charities. A decluttered home feels spacious and calm.

Just paint it: It’s amazing what a fresh lick of paint can do for tired walls and windows. Consult with me on the best neutral colour schemes for your home to bring both light and warmth.

So fresh and so clean: Steam clean carpets, wash windows, remove cobwebs, and hire a cleaner to deep clean kitchens and bathrooms.

A little dressing: Engage a home stylist to put the finishing touches on your home. They can help with partial home staging, new linen and towels for open home presentation, and even established indoor plants to elevate the feeling in your home.

Let there be light! Ensure all light fittings are in working order, bathing your spaces with a lovely warm glow. Lamps make a home look more expensive, so invest in lamps throughout your home. Push back the curtains and set your blinds/shutters ‘just so’, we want lots of light to filter your living zones while keeping an eye on privacy and outlook.

Baskets of fun: Kids toys, shoes, the stuff of life, invest in some baskets for your open homes to store all eyesores in a tight basket weave. This will help your home feel serene and calm.

Don’t forget the garden! Fresh black mulch, stone and chip, even new ready lawn – do make sure your garden is well presented. Some seasonal florals for interest and a basket of hanging flowers always brings a feeling of warm welcome when buyers visit your home.

Have a fabulous spring and summer ahead - Robyn.

A Botanical Life

Whether he’s designing a visionary garden or creating a generously gorgeous floral arrangement, plantsman and gardener Dané Erwee’s distinctive aesthetic combines boldness with beauty.

For as long as Dané Erwee can remember, his life has revolved around plants. Growing up on a vegetable farm means that plant knowledge has always been an integral part of Dané’s life, and his path from being a child who helped with the cuttings has led quite naturally onwards from being a young man studying landscape design at university

to his emergence as one half of the gamechanging floristry duo, OKASIE.

To ensure that they had the flora they needed to create distinctively dramatic floral arrangements, Dané and Chris acquired a property in Johannesdal, South Africa, on which they could “plant for the vase” , says Dané.

Located in Pniel, just on the Franschhoek side of the famously lovely Helshoogte pass, 1207 combines multiple indoor event spaces with boutique accommodation, as well as featuring a variety of beautiful outdoor venues.

In the suite above, a simple boxed wooden headboard made from recycled planks and topped by a trio of small artworks sets off yellow quilted pillows and a bedspread beautifully. A tall Camellia sasanqua plant provides a romantic botanical touch.

Plants are present everywhere at Johannesdal 1207. In another suite (right) in the boutique accommodation section of the development, a vintage rattan bed is surrounded by the greenery provided by a selection of plants in classic terracotta pots. The plants include an aralia, a Ficus robusta and cattleya orchids; Dané is currently much interested in the aesthetic created by combining these – or other more lush and broad-leaved species.

Bold and unusual blooms are of particular interest to Dané. In short, whether he is crafting a bold floral arrangement or creating a new garden, it’s all about “finding the right plant combinations”, Dané says, in order to create new visions of beauty.

Welcome to the (Urban) Jungle

30
PHOTO: CARME AGUAYO

And with populations continuing to expand, it’s more important than ever to plant more plants and trees on urban lands. Research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) estimates that already nine million people die every year because of air pollution, and the United Nations projects that by 2050, 68% of the world’s population will live in cities – that’s 2.5 billion more people than today.

Trees Trump Towers

Multi-award-winning Associate Professor Justin Morgenroth of the University of Canterbury is the leader of the New Zealand Urban Forest Initiative and has been studying the vital role of trees in cities in Aotearoa and around the world.

“Urban forestry is in its infancy in New Zealand,” he tells Verve. “We’re just beginning to appreciate and understand the important roles that urban forests play in our cities and quality of life. I think part of the reason for that is historically low population pressures and mild climatic conditions, meaning our cities have always been considered lush and green.”

Expanding populations aside, Justin says that urban forests are also being threatened by lack of protection, climate change and development pressures. I ask if he feels new architectural developments are doing enough to incorporate green spaces.

“People need housing and trees provide the benefits that give a quality of life to urbanites,” he says. “Some of the debates

I’ve seen recently seem to pit housing against trees as if the two cannot co-exist. I think it’s reductive and harmful to frame things in that way. We tend to focus our attention on developments where all vegetation is removed from site to create a blank canvas on which to build. But there are countless examples worldwide and within New Zealand of medium- and high-density housing developments that retain mature trees and greenspace.”

Justin would like to see the exploration of larger, coordinated developments to maximise shared greenspaces and preserve existing mature trees while leaving room for new plantings to mature over time.

Growing Pains

Xanthe White Design is a landscape studio that works on residential, community, and commercial projects in New Zealand and internationally, collaborating with architects and taking pride in serving as a “bridge between people and the natural world”. “We see our role as anchoring architecture into its surrounds,” says Xanthe. “A build can be hard on the land, and so our job is to restore the balance and weave it into the existing environment.”

Studies have shown a correlation between life expectancy, income equality, and access to green spaces. In cities around the world, wealthier suburbs tend to have more trees and public gardens, and those living in higher income areas can expect to live up to 10 years longer than those earning less.

Continues over page

WORDS— JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACES
Urban forests and gardens don’t just improve air quality and the visual appeal of outdoor public spaces, they cool our cities, create wildlife habitats, and serve as protection against flooding all while providing jobs, tourism, and even food.
31 October 2023

“I can’t point the finger and say exactly what has created current tree cover inequities,” says Justin. “Present day patterns in urban forest cover are the result of decades of land management decisions by thousands of landowners, renters, and managers. In many instances, wealthy suburbs were established long ago, meaning that trees were planted many decades ago and have had the opportunity to grow to mature sizes.”

Wealthier suburbs also tend to be less cramped and have more available planting space, Justin adds, enabling them to support more trees and canopy: “Plus, representational inequities could lead to the observed distributional inequities. That is to say that affluent suburbs are more likely to be represented by people in positions who can exert power over urban forest decision making.”

But whether it be pushing to establish community gardens or simply putting in a bit more effort into our own balconies or backyards, we can all play our part in effecting change. In Auckland, 39% of tree canopy sits on public land, while the other 61% grows from privately owned space. “In a way,” says Justin, “each of those stakeholders is an urban forest manager making decisions about which species to plant and where.”

Xanthe believes landscape designers’ real role is “in people’s relationship with the land”. “A studio isn’t just a designers practice, it’s an active environment of teaching, testing, and learning where ideas grow and are shared,” she says. “People are realising that the act of gardening is where the pleasure is. A beautiful landscape activates wellness, particularly in terms of mental health. Take it a step further into active gardening and it becomes a holistic cure for just about everything.”

Sow & Grow!

As October arrives, the garden brings us lots of opportunities to sow and grow. Labour Weekend marks the turning point for summer crops, presenting the ideal moment to dive into garden tasks.

Veggies

Your favourite summer veggie seedlings will start arriving instore this month, so make sure to grab your tomatoes, chillies, basil, beans, and eggplants. Protect your new seedlings from slugs and snails using Tui Quash – it's kid- and pet-safe. Don’t forget to label your seeds and seedlings – especially if you’re growing different cultivars of the same plant. This will come in handy, so you know what works and what needs more care next year.

Fruit

Prepare for a delicious summer harvest by planting raspberries and blueberries in rich soil mixed with Kings Compost. Plant different varieties of blueberries in the same garden for cross-pollination.

Give established fruit trees a boost with Kings Citrus and Fruit Tree Fertiliser. For potted citrus, use Kings Slow-Release Citrus Food.

Flowers

Create stunning displays in tall pots and hanging baskets with petunia, lobelia, and alyssum. Fill gaps in the garden with taller annuals like snapdragons, marigolds, and gazanias.

Trees and Shrubs

Get hydrangeas in now – they grow well in dappled shade and can tolerate the south side of fences and houses. Plant roses in sunny spots using Living Earth Garden Mix or Kings Compost for growth stimulation.

Indoor Plants

Start fertilising with Kings House Plant Food, or for larger, more established indoor plants, use Kings House Plant Slow-Release Food. As new growth appears, start making cuttings and propagating your indoor plants.

General Tasks

Introduce companion plants around your veggies and shrubs to naturally ward off pests. Stake your tomatoes' laterals with sturdy bamboo stakes.

Seasoned Design

Architectural design is experiencing the seasons.

They are predicting a hot summer and with it comes full sun and heat. We use our south-facing villa veranda to get out of the sun and into a breeze which runs down the street.

It reminded me of a magic moment as an architectural student when I visited Jim Hackshaw’s own home. Jim was one of the architects in the celebrated Group Architects of the 1950s and beyond. He had designed a south-facing snug with wood fire and fully glazed south wall with views out to the garden. It was a big room with a high ceiling. All wrong to an architectural student being taught rooms face north. The room was cool in the summer and cosy in the winter but never enclosing.

Today the southside of your house is seen as the worst aspect of your house and we are encouraged by the building code to close it off for thermal reasons. But its shade can provide summer relief from the heat and lessen you chance of developing

melanoma. The southern garden provides a difference aspect to your house and the garden itself will be different from your northern garden due to the shade-loving plants.

We all love the image of a romantic Tuscan lunch under the shade of an avenue of trees and your southern garden could provide that.

Opening a south-facing set of doors can also provide cross ventilation to cool the interior of your house. It doesn't make any sense in an Auckland summer to close up your house and put the heat pump on to cool it. We love that indoor/outdoor thing.

Environmentally responsible

Nu-Wall is an ecologically responsible product, with over 80% of their material composed of recycled aluminium.

Aluminium is the second most abundant metal in the earth’s crust and the recycling process only uses a fraction of the energy required to refine virgin aluminium. Nu-Wall has a carbon footprint that is 90% better than the global average of virgin aluminium.

As aluminium is a very light metal, the total mass of Nu-Wall required to clad a building is fractional compared to many other products such as fibre cement weatherboard.

The coating finish of Nu-Wall also offers several ecological advantages. Their finishes are applied in a controlled

nuwall.co.nz

factory environment, therefore, avoiding the contamination issues that arise when paint finishes are applied on site. Additionally, the maintenance of NuWall is limited to washing only - avoiding the painting cycles other cladding solutions require.

After a guaranteed lifetime of over 100 years, Nu-Wall cladding can easily be removed and fully recycled.

Pretty Green

Verve talks to Sandii and Kirsty of Babylon Store .

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind Babylon Store?

Being creatives and gardeners with serious addictions to plants led us down this wonderful adventure. It started with Babylon Gardens, the landscaping business, then Babylon Store, to create botanical offerings in beautiful, unusual pairings with vessels we couldn't find easily anywhere else.

What do you think sets Babylon Store apart?

We don't consider ourselves a garden centre or decor store, but a place of creativity where you can commission a one-off botanical artwork. A place where you can choose a pot and a plant you love then have it planted up and loaded into the car while you wait. Or a place where experts help to interior landscape your home with our site visits and full install service.

Can you tell us about your other items?

We offer other things you may want to use in your outdoor space, or need for inspiration, like beautiful books, garden lights, and selected tools. We also champion a few local jewellery-makers and artists who supply us with one-off pieces.

Can you also tell us about your workshops?

We have a lovely big potting bench where you can spend an afternoon learning how to create Japanese kokedama, how to strike a cutting, or make a succulent bowl. Classes sell out quickly, but we’re always adding more!

How has the community in St Heliers embraced Babylon Store?

For many, we’re a sanctuary to wander through for inspiration or to simply to enjoy the serenity. We’ve hosted variety of events like a charity art auction for I Am Hope, and take part in the annual Christmas Treats on Turua Street. Plus, we’ve recently run a vintage and sustainable clothing market from the store. We love the idea of bringing people to St Heliers Village to see what we offer.

What advice do you have for individuals just starting to explore indoor plant care?

Less is more from a watering perspective – rotting your plant is easy to do. Don't be discouraged if a plant dies, sometimes they just need a different spot. Also, plants don’t really survive well with no light so if there’s no window in that bathroom, buy a vase instead!

Any special ideas for the upcoming gifting season?

Gift an experience such as a workshop or a site visit to give your home or patio a green revival. Or choose one of our pre-planted sets such as a succulent bowl for an outdoor table. Our one-off pieces of handcrafted pottery or jewellery make an amazing special gift, too.

Do you offer consultations for potted plants?

Yes! Our site visits are hands down the best way to get an amazing look in your home or office. We source, deliver, and install everything – so no mess, no hassle!

Feeling the Heat

Verve talks heating for outdoor spaces with Jamie Hall .

What are the different types of outdoor heating for residential spaces?

Our most popular are the wall-mounted Infratech infrared heaters – electric heaters which are not affected by wind. Fire pits and fireplaces are also popular. These use the more traditional wood burning, with their metal units radiating the heat. Gas powered patio heaters, which heat the air, are useful in more sheltered areas.

Can you explain the key differences between a fire pit and a chiminea in terms?

A fire pit is open style fire, ideal for sitting around, watching the fire, toasting marshmallows, and even with a grill. Although the bowl will radiate heat, the fire also will provide significant warmth for those around it. A chimninea – or outdoor fireplace –is typically fully or partially enclosed to focus on radiating heat from the metal units, which can be safer in residential areas. They have limited cooking capabilities.

How can I determine the appropriate size and heating capacity of an outdoor heater?

Wall-mounted electric heaters are specified by the mounting height they will be put at and the size of the area to be heated. Infrared heating has a set distance that each output model will push the heat out. Because of this, by mounting to the mounting height we can guarantee a comfortable temperature will be felt no matter what the space.

What are the benefits of using infrared heaters for outdoor heating?

They heat objects rather than the air making them perfect for exposed outdoor areas as wind won’t affect them. Older style gas patio heaters heat the air, so wind will blow heat away. Gas

heaters are much more expensive to run than electric heaters, and less environmentally friendly.

What innovative outdoor heating technologies have emerged recently?

We’ve just started selling the Smokelis Firepits which work by sucking the flame from underneath the fire and shooting it across the top of the pit, burning off most of the smoke. This makes them perfect for residential areas. They also have a very innovative cooking system available.

Can you provide tips on effectively arranging outdoor seating to create a cosy atmosphere?

Mounting heaters off a wall or ceiling edge, angled towards the space, will heat the side, front or back of your body, instead of just your head. Having furniture face the heater will also add cosiness.

What maintenance is required?

Most outdoor electric heaters are weather-proofed, but they don’t like extended exposure to salt so hose them off on mist every 3-6 months. Surprisingly, the more the heaters are used, the longer the elements last. Our outdoor fires are mainly made of Corten steel and thick cast iron, so patina overtime. They don’t need much maintenance at all, just clean out the ash.

What are the pros and cons of permanent outdoor heating installations versus portable heating options?

Our Infratech hardwired heaters are much more powerful than portable infrared heaters. Portable heaters are movable so you can adjust them to face your target space and are cheaper to run.

Poolside

How has the pool market changed during your 30 years in the business?

Pools were always seen as luxury add-ons, but now most high-end house builds include them. The lockdowns and travel restrictions certainly saw people focusing on their backyards and we saw a significant increase in pool builds to existing residences. We were very fortunate in that difficult time had a positive impact on our business and we didn’t take that for granted.

What’s the most popular trend for pool design?

We’re seeing the integration of lots of spas allowing people to go from the cool of the pool to the warmth of the spa with ease as they’re usually only separated by a ledge or small wall.

What sets Frontier Pools apart from other pool companies? We’d like to think that you’re getting the most committed, experienced of teams. We strive to make a clients’ outdoor living dream a reality by constructing beautiful, high-quality pools to be enjoyed for years to come.

Can you tell us about the most challenging project you've undertaken?

Most of our projects have an element of complexity – something which Frontier Pools’ reputation has been built on. Using a steel-reinforced, sprayed-concrete method enables us to create pretty much any design and size, which attracts us to those with yards that are uniquely shaped, have limited space or tricky to get to. Success comes down to maintaining good, constant communication with the client and addressing issues as soon

as they arise. The construction process can be extremely messy at times, particularly in winter months, so it’s vital to let clients know what to expect. No surprises are imperative to the smooth management of a project!

Many homeowners dream of having a pool. What advice would you give to someone considering such a project? Good planning and design are key to any successful building project and that definitely extends to outdoor living projects. When a client contacts us, if they haven’t already engaged with a landscape architect to design their pool/outdoor living project we will always refer them to one of the various amazing ones we partner with across Auckland. Do your homework and know who you are dealing with – most of our clients are referred by a friend or work colleague who have used us before.

Also, make sure you know what’s not included in your quoted price and what are provisional costs such as excavation to minimise any surprises that can potentially blow out the budget. Again, communication with your project manager and key contractors are imperative to a successful build project.

Shades of Clay

New Zealand’s first clay block showhome.

Why Kiwis are choosing to build with clay block. A quick comparison to timber frame housing will convince you this is a living environment timber cannot offer.

It all started with a vision: the idea of a building with near-zero heating, cooling or ventilation required.

People-focused with 100% natural indoor air quality and constant, feel-good indoor temperatures all year round equals good health and living well.

Now that vision has become a reality; the building is a promise.

A Porotherm Clay Block building promises excellent return on value, energy efficiency and life cycle costs. The promise is delivered exclusively by building physics; solid walls and ceilings that serve as insulation and thermal mass, giving you much more for your money.

A true forever home lasting many, many generations.

There’s just no comparison.

Chris and Robyn MacPherson of MacPherson Architecture Ltd have been designing high-end homes for over 25 years.

Frustrated by the overall poor quality of NZ building materials, poor performance, and the minimal Level 3 most homes are built to with only a 10-year warranty on the biggest financial and emotional investment of a lifetime, they believe solid clay blocks homes offer a real solution.

Feeling is believing. When you walk into a Porotherm building and close the door, you are in a world of your own. The difference to a stick frame home is like night and day. It’s quiet, peaceful and fresh, 100% natural and breathable.

There’s just nothing like it.

Stellaria NZ Ltd was formed by Chris and Robyn to import clay construction materials from their partner company, Wienerberger, Europe.

The New Cambridge Showhome

The new Porotherm Clay Block Showhome on 83 Swayne Rd, Cambridge, Waikato is a stunning showpiece of most of the products Chris and Robyn distribute throughout NZ.

Terca Clay facing bricks coupled with breathable plaster on the block finishes the exterior. The roof is Koramic clay roof tiles and exterior paving is the Penter pavers also produced by Wienerberger. Chris and Robyn import seven different building materials manufactured by Wienerberger.

The joinery is Internorm from Austria and Kitchen is by Zampieri, Italy. Breathable lime plaster interior walls.

The team at Stellaria NZ & MacPherson Architecture invite you to come and visit them. For many of their special clients and professionals, Chris and Robyn have invited to stay overnight in the showhome to experience the different living environment and enjoy a weekend in beautiful Cambridge.

Seeing is believing.

”You just have to be in it and feel the integrity of the walls. There is no way to truly describe the secure, solid, quiet peacefulness until you do,” says Robyn MacPherson of Stellaria.

Firestarter

Verve sits around the campfire with Carlos Ter Huurne, owner of Ignition Firewood .

Can you share some benefits of using firewood for cooking and heating?

I think there’s something primal about burning wood – our ancestors have been doing it since the beginning of time. It adds a certain flavour to the food – which varies with wood type and cooking technique – that’s just not possible when using gas or an oven.

Could you describe the process of preparing the firewood at Ignition?

It’s a lengthy process which starts with the logs being stacked sometimes for up to 18 months to dry out. After the wood is cut and split on the production line, we typically kiln-dry our products to ensure a consistent moisture content. Once the wood is down to an acceptable moisture level, we tip it in one of our many sheds. The average number of times we pick up our wood before it is sold is eight, so there’s a lot of handling involved.

Are there any specific occasions where your firewood products are particularly popular?

There are quite a few: offset barbecues, hangis, and outdoor pizzerias, as well as umus and good old campfires. Although, the bulk of our products go to houses for heating.

Has the demand for firewood for outdoor living spaces evolved over the years?

In the 12 years I've been doing firewood, cooking with wood has gained an almost

a cult-like following. We have adapted by offering products to better suit this market – our pōhutukawa and oak are favourites.

What do you think is the impact of your firewood on fostering an outdoor community?

Being a father of two, I think anything that gets kids off screens and into the backyard is a win. In our backyard we have a woodfired spa and an open fire pit for Argentinian-style cooking, and it's great involving the kids in these activities.

What role does sustainability and low-waste play in your business?

What a lot of people don't realise is our business is basically recycling. We’re taking a product – logs – which in many cases people had no use for and turning it into a product which has a use - heat/warmth. Worldwide biomass provides 13% of our energy needs and firewood is another type of biomass. Our goal is to utilise all parts of the logs hence we grind up our waste and sell that as mulch. A lot of our sawdust goes to local farmers for animal bedding.

Any new products we should keep an eye out for?

We have a new product dropping very soon, 'BBQ wood chunks’, ideal for offset barbecues, smokers, or charcoal barbecues. It will be available with shipping nationwide.

How can Kiwis get the best out of firewood coming into summer?

Summer is the best time to buy your firewood – we currently have spring specials with up to 35% off. The benefit of buying wood now is you can buy it wet and dry it out yourself. When you buy in winter you have no choice but to buy dry wood. We have both dry, ready-to-burn wood, and wet unseasoned wood. But I'd only recommend buying unseasoned wood if you have a suitable area to store it to dry out.

Throwing Shade

Louvretec uses their vast experience and smart sun solutions to bring more space, sun control, and comfortable outdoor living to homes and buildings.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind Louvretec and its mission?

Our goal is to bring more space, sun control, and comfortable outdoor living to homes and buildings, using our vast experience and smart sun solutions.

How do Louvretec products transform outdoor spaces?

Installation of an Opening Roof looks stunning, brings welcomed space and creates a connection to the outdoors via an ‘outdoor room’. Opening Roofs let people fall in love with their home all over again.

How does Louvretec’s product range enhance the outdoor living experience?

Louvretec opening roofs and sun louvre systems let you control conditions as you see fit, complementing any architectural style. Customers tell us their outdoor rooms fast become the family’s favourite gathering space.

How does Louvretec incorporate sustainability into its products and practices?

Louvretec Opening Roofs and Sun Louvres are made of recyclable aluminium – about 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today! Our product range can help reduce a building’s overall energy consumption, lowering the need for air-conditioning. In winter, customers can maximise sunlight and enjoy passive solar heat gain, reducing the amount of heating needed.

What are some trends Louvretec is seeing?

We’re seeing a trend for outdoor kitchens and cabanas for a chill spa- or poolside vibe, so we’ve just launched the Suburban Express freestanding roof which is hand operable and can be installed in a day. Our Retractable Roofs allow louvres to retract back to enjoy the night sky. Motorised products can be operated by a smartphone, tablet, and even your voice.

How easy is it to maintain Louvretec's products?

Our team provides maintenance and valet options. Regular, scheduled servicing will keep your products in optimum condition!

What advice would you give homeowners looking to enhance their outdoor spaces with Louvretec products? Contact us to discuss design ideas and arrange a free, no-obligation site visit and/or quotation. With our expertise we can transform any space into a functional, comfortable, stunning outdoor living area.

How does Louvretec stay at the forefront of innovation in outdoor living solutions?

We work closely with architects – they are true creatives and it’s our goal to deliver their design specifications. Our Louvretec design centre and sales team enable us to offer an innovative product range and solutions, and make things happen.

Any upcoming projects or plans you can share?

We’re currently refreshing our outdoor display in Albany to showcase our new series of Retract Roofs as well as our new, Suburban Express freestanding opening roof. We’re also launching a new website in the new year, and a new Design Manual for Specifiers.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Louvretec products are available in many different powder coat and anodised colours. Match our product range to your existing joinery or create a new pop of colour in your home. There's even wood grain powder coat finishes which look just like timber! Our product range includes Opening Roofs, Sun Louvre systems, Outdoor Blinds, Shutters, Slidetec Frameless Glass Sliding Doors, Heating, and Lighting.

Refreshing Trends

From Lahood® for Spring

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home decor with new curtains or blinds. Lahood’s award-winning interior designer Tricia Dunlop shares the latest trends to inspire you.

Nature’s best : Linen curtains are a popular choice for spring. The natural fibres are breathable, sustainable, and create a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere in your home. Light, airy and flowing, linen is a great choice for warmer months, cooling the temperature by allowing airflow whilst filtering the harsh sunlight. Linen’s durability and moisture tolerance are perfect for New Zealand conditions and the trending colour palette of soft greens, blues and browns draw inspiration from our natural environment of bush, ocean and pasture.

Florals and foliage : Floral and foliage prints are perfect for introducing a spring-like feel into your home. Soft greens, pinks and browns are on-trend and bring a freshness and levity to any environment. Use for full-length curtains to make an impact or add subtle elegance with roman blinds.

Shimmering sheers : Sheers are a go-to for warmer months with their airy, light-filtering quality. Whilst perfect for a natural, pared-back look we are also seeing an increasing demand for a more glamourous statement with sheers featuring glistening sequins and foiled motifs.

Double the effect : A strong trend is the combination of sheers with blockout roller blinds to allow natural light during the day and privacy at night. If space or preference do not allow for sheers, dual roller blinds will achieve a similar effect with a sunscreen providing light and UV protection during the day and a blockout blind providing darkness and privacy at night. Automated blinds are more popular than ever, and can be programmed to open and close depending on the time or temperature within your home.

When refreshing your windows this spring, consider the overall aesthetic of your home, the desired mood, and the impact on other elements in your room. Offering a complete interior design service beyond just windows furnishings, Tricia can provide guidance on how to ensure your spring refresh perfectly reflects your style.

Start your spring refresh now by visiting the Lahood Showroom at 104 Mount Eden Road, (Mondays - Fridays 9am5pm and Saturdays 9.30am-4pm), call 0800LAHOOD or visit lahood.co.nz

From Sanctuary to Home:

The Evolution of Cavit+Co

WORDS— MILLY NOLAN

Passionate about creating enduring aesthetics rather than chasing fleeting trends, Debbie Cavit, as the founder of luxurious furniture store, Cavit+Co, has helped clients select the perfect pieces of furniture and accessories for their homes, for over 30 years.

Despite closing the flagship store in 2019, Cavit+Co continues to live on, albeit in a more intimate setting. These days, Debbie meets clients by appointment-only, at her home in Parnell, to discuss their interior aspirations. Verve chats to Debbie about this new chapter in the Cavit+Co story.

Thirty years in business is an incredible feat, what would you say is the reason behind Cavit+Co’s success?

For 30 years, our mantra has been ‘creating timeless homes’ by finding the right furniture to meet a client’s requirements, aligning it with the space’s architecture and working within their budget. We continue to live by this mantra despite no longer having a physical showroom.

You have an impeccable eye for design, how would you describe the Cavit+Co style?

Sophisticated, elegant, and considered, with a fair dose of practicality. We have always represented a timeless style, rather than chasing what is currently in vogue. If a tree takes a century to grow, then something made from it should last just as long. I firmly believe that when furnishings are chosen specifically for an individual that suit their architecture, family and lifestyle, then the home doesn’t date. It becomes a classic and essential part of the family living there.

Cavit+Co has always offered a diverse collection of the very best furniture and accessory brands from around the globe. Is this still the case?

Yes, we have access to an extensive range of brands – what you see on our website is just the tip of the iceberg. We take pride in our longstanding relationships with prominent international design houses. Our exclusive brands include Alfonso Marina, HBF, JNL, Hamilton Conte, Baker, McGuire, Verellen, Bolier, Baxter, Lalique, Objekto, Promemoria, St Louis, Frette, and many others. I still carry Frette, Muse and Lalique for clients to purchase ex-stock, and have samples of other collections

on view for clients to see quality and scale, we then bring in to order to individually customise our clients’ interiors.

You now greet clients by appointment-only at your home office – what outcome can one expect from this?

Whether a client seeks a single standout piece for their home or holiday house, or desires to revamp an entire home, I can offer solutions. We are also finding a number of our clients moving from their larger family homes and are wanting smaller, ergonomically designed pieces of the same quality, which we can provide with our existing suppliers, or have custom made for their needs.

Your passion for your craft is unwavering, how do you remain at the forefront of design trends?

I still attend international trade fairs and I still spend literally hours each day pouring over trends and information from overseas suppliers and publications.

Have you found more of a work-life balance now that you no longer have the store? If so, how do you spend your free time? I’m still very much in the learning stages of how to spend my new time. I have been totally engrossed in the business for over 35 years, and it seems strange not to get up, and start working well before the sun comes up and then head to the office. I have just returned from a wonderful week in New Caledonia, which was thoroughly enjoyable and for the first time in many, many years, I travelled without my computer by my side – a great first step. I hope for more travel, getting back to playing golf, and starting to experience other things life has to offer, while still helping my valued clients create beautiful homes.

Now a hidden treasure, Cavit+Co is to be found at Debbie’s home in Parnell, by appointment only. To book a consultation with Debbie, email hello@cavitco.com or phone 09 358 3771.

When Friendship Meets Business

WORDS—

They’ve recently shifted their flagship store of 15 years to a new location in Grey Lynn.

Now located on Richmond Road with plenty of parking, the new Thread Design store is in excellent company, neighbours to fellow design stores Homage, Tonic Tile Lounge and Bauhaus. Flooded with morning sun, the store is a visual treat, boasting not only a coveted array of homeware and bedlinen, but also featuring stylish concrete floors, custom-made shelving, a chic marble-topped counter, and the

soft elegance of linen curtains. It’s the kind of store that’s challenging to leave empty-handed, a testament to Sarah and Katie’s natural flair for aesthetics. Verve speaks to the talented duo about their remarkable journey in the world of business.

Were you friends before becoming business partners?

Sarah: Yes, we met each other when we were three years old at a birthday party and have been friends ever since.

Contemporary bedlinen brand and homeware store, Thread Design, is the brainchild of lifelong friends, Sarah Sadgrove and Katie Collis. MILLY NOLAN
Katie: We’ve spent most of our lives following the same path. We did our OE together and got married and had kids at the same time also. Between us, we have seven children. I have three boys aged from 12 to 19, and Sarah has a daughter and three boys aged between 12 and 18.

How did the idea for Thread Design come about?

K: In our 20s, we were working together in a luxurious hunting lodge in the Scottish Highlands, and it was while we were making the beds that we conjured up the idea to design modern bedlinen.

S: We were also inspired by the Designers Guild store in London. Their bedlinen was so unique and different to the norm. When we came back to New Zealand, we realised that there was a gap in the market, so we wanted create bedding that was unique, modern, and unisex. Everything was quite flowery and outdated at the time, so we jumped straight in without much of a business plan to be honest!

When did you first launch Thread Design?

S: In 2001 we launched our first range of bedlinen. It was all made from high quality cotton, really simple but modern in design. Initially we only sold wholesale to design and department stores and that worked incredibly well for us. It really took off, which was wonderful.

K: Then in 2008 when the global financial crisis began, a lot of the stores we were selling our bedlinen through closed, so we took the punt at opening our own store in Grey Lynn, and here we still are 15 years later.

Along with your own bedlinen range, you also sell other homewares in the Thread Design Store. How would you describe your aesthetic?

S: Over the years, the store has very much evolved into a lifestyle retail store with brands that complement each other.

K: We basically sell anything we would like in our own homes. That’s always our gauge when buying something for the store and luckily our aesthetic seems to match the demand of the neighbourhood also.

S: I think you’d describe our style as contemporary but comfortable. But

also, timeless and practical. Things that you can use every day and will last you a while, also.

Although you design the bedlinen range yourselves, you also often collaborate with other artists. Please tell us about your latest collaboration?

S: We’ve just launched a collaboration with New Zealand artist, Melanie Field. We’ve created a cushion collection using four of her gorgeous paintings which we had printed onto linen and velvet. They work so well together and are absolutely beautiful on a bed or sofa.

What would you say your point of difference is with your bedlinen?

K: Unlike most bedlinen ranges which are made offshore, most of our products are made here in New Zealand from quality cotton and linen.

S: We are proud to support New Zealand manufacturing from an environmental, ethical and economic perspective. There are some things we can’t make locally so we have them made in Portugal or India – unfortunately it’s getting harder and harder to make things here.

How have you juggled motherhood with business?

K: We’ve been really lucky in that we have followed the same path as each other at the same time, so we have a shared understanding of what it’s like to be a working mother and a mutual respect for the challenges that comes with the juggle. We take turns at having time off when one needs it more.

S: There were times when the kids were young where we felt we weren’t doing a good job at either the business or being a mum, but now that the kids are older, we have more balance. I

69 October 2023

think if we hadn’t been in the same phases of life while running this business, it wouldn’t have worked. We have always pooled our individual skills together. We are very lucky to have each other.

Outside of work, how do you spend your time?

K: I spend a lot of time in the garden and am always busy with the kids and their sporting activities. I’m looking forward to a long overdue holiday in Japan with my husband!

S: I have four busy teenage children so there’s not too much spare time at the moment, but I love watching them play their sports, going for walks, being at the beach in summer chasing the waves – we have a surf mad household! – oh, and a spot of gardening when I can!

If you could turn back time, what advice would you give your younger self?

S: Trust your gut, be confident in yourself and put yourself out there! Hard work definitely pays off.

HOLISTIC HEALING

YOUR WARRANT OF WELLNESS

Who is your target audience?

Our target audience encompasses high achievers burdened by stress and seeking clear and attainable goals. They're the wellness purists navigating the maze of internet advice, dedicated to nurturing both mind and body. They're also the lifestylers who, with the evolution of age and family responsibilities, are in search of credible and genuine guidance on health and wellness.

If I needed help in all facets of my life with my body, my lack of exercise, my motivation – would Minerva be the right place for me? Do I come along for a consultation?

Absolutely. At Minerva, with our unique Warrant of Wellness, we delve deep into your mental and physical health. From understanding your mental wellbeing to analysing your heart, lung, strength, movement, and body composition, our goal is to pinpoint where your focus should lie for maximum benefits. For a holistic view, we even offer a comprehensive blood test. If ever in doubt, we provide a complimentary discovery call to address any queries you might have.

Do you have specialty personnel to assist with diet, health, and fitness?

Over three transformative years, we've meticulously curated a dream team of exceptional professionals in their respective domains. Dr Jeanette, our dietitian, combines a PhD in nutrition with a fine arts degree, among other qualifications. Our performance coach, Jenna, is backed by 17 years of clinical

experience as a registered psychologist and behavioural analyst. Additionally, our trainer, Will, is not only a sports scientist and functional movement expert but also on a continual learning journey while our clinical leader in respiratory physiotherapy, Abby, aids in deciphering and rectifying dysfunctional breathing patterns. But beyond their accolades, what makes them truly special is their unwavering passion and alignment with Minerva's ethos.

If I’ve just undergone major back surgery, what rehab programme would you suggest?

Abby would be able to diagnose /assess/ treat this through holistic Musculorespiratory physiotherapy and could give the “green flag” to support graded exposure back into meaningful activities post surgery.

How would you customise a programme tailored for managing blood sugars?

Dr Jeanette will thoroughly engage with you to determine an effective strategy, grounded in both your nutritional patterns and the data we gather. We value your involvement in this journey, ensuring the formation of sustainable healthy habits that serve you for life.

I’m a highly competitive individual with an extreme fitness obsession. How would Minerva balance me out? Jenna, our exceptional performance

coach, would be your anchor. While ambition is commendable, an extreme obsession can tip the scales towards an unhealthy lifestyle. Jenna's bespoke approach will be rooted in understanding your intrinsic motivations. Every behavioural alteration, be it in diet, exercise, sleep, or stress management, circles back to psychology. We aim to harness your personal experiences and drive to benefit you.

How can Minerva help with inherited heart concerns?

Everyone has a narrative, stitched together by genetics and experiences. While an inherited risk doesn't label you, Dr Jeanette would be the guiding light in sculpting a proactive plan to minimise any potential threat. Our core beliefs revolve around prevention through our four pillars of high performance: nutrition, mental health, exercise, and sleep. We also have the privilege of collaborating with SRW, industry leaders who provide cutting-edge anti-ageing nutraceuticals.

Suppose I had no health or mental or physical issues. What programmes would you propose?

Everyone's story holds value. We're here to hear yours and to co-create a plan to unlock your fullest potential. Our ultimate victory is in equipping you with the tools for optimal health, making our presence redundant.

I strongly believe that prevention trumps cure. What preventive programmes would you recommend?

Prevention is our mantra. Our mission is to galvanise New Zealanders to bolster their healthspan, tap into their latent potential, and combat preventable diseases that sadly account for nearly 39% of all deaths.

What is healthspan?

Healthspan isn't just about living longer; it's about living better. It represents the span of one's life that's free from debilitating diseases, allowing one to lead an active, fulfilling, and healthy life. At Minerva, we don't just aspire for you to add years to your life, but life to your years.

What’s your vision for Minerva Health & Wellness?

Our vision, passionately shared with our stellar team, is to meld cutting-edge medical-prevention with the finesse of a luxury health club. We aspire to ignite a fervour within you about optimising your health. It's not just about individual wellbeing; it's about crafting a community of likeminded enthusiasts, where this invigorating culture doesn't just thrive within our walls but radiates vibrantly into the broader community. At Minerva, we don't just aim for transformation; we envision a movement.

Following this, Lanit rotated through various medical and surgical specialties across the Auckland hospitals, before working as an oral and maxillofacial surgery registrar both in Middlemore, and at Westmead hospital in Sydney.

With dual degrees in dentistry and medicine, Lanit believes in delivering evidence-based care and has published several research papers which he has presented at conferences nationally and internationally. Lanit has a special interest in complex cases requiring surgery as well as cleft lip and palate care.

Lanit was accepted onto the orthodontic programme at the University of Queensland, where he undertook three years of specialist training. He remains on staff, holding an honorary lecturer position in Brisbane where he continues to be involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Outside of work Lanit is married with two young children, stays fit with running and hiking, and enjoys watching sport and spending time with his family.

Lanit has returned home to Auckland and joins Craig Sharp at both his Ormiston and Newmarket locations.

Craig Sharp Orthodontic started in 1987 when Craig purchased an existing and wellestablished Specialist Orthodontic Practice from Dr John Peat, in Remuera. The practice is still at the same address, all these years later, albeit at the other end of the building. Craig then opened a new practice in 2009 in the Ormiston Hospital building in Flatbush.

Craig has been at the forefront of the inclusion of digital equipment/techniques in New Zealand for their practical use in orthodontic treatment for many years and was the first practice in Australasia to incorporate digital models into a patient’s treatment workflow. There has been a steady stream of digital equipment/techniques ever since.

Craig is very much looking forward to Lanit’s arrival into both practices to help with the ever-growing patient numbers. Most importantly, Lanit’s background in oral surgery and medicine is going to be of significant benefit to his future orthodontic patients.

GAIN YOUTHFUL LOOKING SKIN &

BANISH ACNE WITH LIGHT THERAPY

LED light therapy is one of the lesser-known stars of the skin therapy business, but make no mistake it is a superpower and shouldn’t be taken lightly, says Louise Gray.

What is LED light?

LED stands for high intensity 'light emitting diodes'. NASA scientists discovered the skin cherishing aspect of them about 40 years ago during plant growth experiments. Unlike other light treatments (such as laser) LED doesn’t use heat so there is no risk of burning or injury to the skin. LED has proven to be extremely effective in repairing damaged skin cells and speeding up the healing process, making it not just effective for complexion maintenance but also post procedures like injectables and surgery.

How does LED light therapy work?

As we age our metabolism slows down, resulting in a loss of cellular energy. LED light works in a similar way to photosynthesis in plants. The visible spectrum of light triggers the body to take the light’s energy and convert it to energy for the cells of the body, re-energising them. When we expose the skin to the light the cells get an instant boost. As a result, it will look more youthful and be more hydrated, plus skin care will penetrate more effectively.

How many treatments do I need?

We recommend a series of nine 20-minute treatments 48 hours apart followed by a monthly maintenance boost. You’ll see immediate results, which will get even better over the following two months. Studies have shown exceptionally positive results for the perioral areas including marionette lines, fine lines around the lips, and nasolabial folds.

Red for Wrinkles

Red light therapy uses visible wavelengths from 630-660

nanometres and infrared light wavelengths at around 880nm. The layers of the skin have a high content of blood and water, so the light is easily absorbed. Red light therapy increases the battery life of skin cells, revs up blood circulation which delivers

oxygen and nutrients to the skin, and gradually restores the elastic function of elastin. Its cell repairing capabilities make it an excellent treatment for rosacea and eczema too.

Blue for Blemishes

Blue light has a wavelength of 400–490nm. When it reaches the sebaceous glands in the skin, it activates porphyrins, which are compounds inside acne bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes). The light releases reactive oxygen molecules which effectively kills the bacteria.

Light therapy has systemic effects so if you have chronic pain or body inflammation LED treatment can also be beneficial diminishing discomfort and improving mobility.

NATURAL SMILE

DAVE RICHARDS TALKS THE BEAUTY OF NATURAL TEETH

Natural Smile, a beacon of dental excellence, is dedicated to restoring the beauty of natural teeth and creating radiant smiles.

The name Natural Smile conjures up thoughts of radiant smiles. Can you share the inspiration behind your practice and the name Natural Smile? The inspiration for our name comes from our desire to rebuild radiant natural smiles to recreate natural teeth. Find out more at drdaverichards.nz.

What sets your dental clinic apart from others?

We aim to always provide the best treatment and care, using the latest dental technology, and offer the best clinical practice to all our patients.

What innovative techniques or technologies do you employ to ensure patients achieve their dream smiles?

We use Cerec technology and 3D printers. Its the latest technology to have revolutionised dentistry, enabling dream smiles.

Could you tell us about any other cutting-edge dental technologies or techniques that you employ?

Computer-aided software allows use to provide same day crowns, bridges, veneers, and implant crowns. This reduces appointment time so

that patients can carry on with their schedules.

For those who may have dental anxiety, how do you and your team ensure a welcoming and stress-free experience? Our team provides a friendly, inviting, and caring approach, welcoming patients into the clinic. We know a lot of patients associate dentistry with medical smells and noises so we combat this by infusing fresh scents into the clinic along with calming music.

How do you prioritise patient comfort and relaxation during dental procedures, and what amenities or features do you offer to create a calming atmosphere in your clinic?

We do this initially by understanding patients' wants and needs from the communication between the clinician, staff, and patient. The features we use are relaxing music, and tranquil flatscreen videos during surgeries with the relaxing smells of essential oils.

Could you provide some insights into the connection between oral health and general wellbeing?

We believe, with proven scientific

research, that good oral health leads to better overall wellbeing. A stable diet consisting of natural foods leads to less erosion of the teeth.

What advice do you give to parents when it comes to instilling good oral hygiene habits in their children from a young age?

This is a common question we get asked! The best advice is to limit sugar intake, stick to natural foods, and create a reward system for two-minute brushing mornings and evenings to make it a fun activity for children.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Here a Natural Smile we like to build relationships with patients that means they feel they can speak freely and discuss any issues or concerns. We believe the best treatment comes from understanding, communication and trust between clinicians and patients. We love what we do at Natural Smile!

PLANT POWER

THE CANNABIS CLINIC IS PASSIONATE ABOUT PLANT-BASED MEDICINE.

Since opening in 2018, Cannabis Clinic has steered over 30,000 Kiwis to better health and wellness with tailormade plans that prioritise self-care and taking proactive steps towards a healthier, happier life. Verve caught up with the Cannabis Clinic’s Marketing Manager, Melissa Zissou, to learn more about how the clinic is dedicated to helping individuals care for themselves and achieve their wellbeing goals.

Who could benefit from therapies offered by The Cannabis Clinic?

As New Zealand’s leading medicinal cannabis clinic, we’re passionate about the role that plant-based medicine can play in modern healthcare. We’ve seen patients suffering from pain, anxiety, sleep issues and other conditions where conventional treatments might not have been effective.

Are treatments safe for all ages?

Patient safety is paramount to us. In our experience, medicinal cannabis treatments have shown promise for a variety of conditions across different age groups. However, like all medical treatments, it's essential to approach medicinal cannabis with a thorough understanding of its effects, especially when considering its use in young people or the elderly. So, it's essential for qualified healthcare professionals to evaluate patients’ needs, potential benefits, and risks, and closely monitor and adjust dosages as necessary.

Do you need a referral from your doctor?

No. Our experienced medical team can consult with you on a wide range of issues. Simply give Cannabis Clinic a call or fill in your details online at cannabisclinic.co.nz and someone will be in touch. Your first consultation will involve investigating your medical

history, then it’s standard first principles medicine.

What happens at one’s first appointment?

Our friendly, experienced doctors will inquire about your medical history and any prior experience with cannabis. If appropriate, they’ll then recommend specific products, explaining potential considerations or side effects. We require a follow-up consultation to ensure progress is on track and aim to provide a supportive experience throughout your journey.

What’s the current ruling in New Zealand on medicinal cannabis?

Medicinal cannabis products are legal to be prescribed by a doctor. While entirely legal, the medical cannabis industry remains massively misunderstood. So, healthcare aside, the clinic team realizes greater education is vital to remove the stigma and allow meaningful progress that may change lives.

Could you tell us more about your team?

We’re authorities on medicinal cannabis in Aotearoa. Each of our clinicians is accredited either by the Medical Council of New Zealand or the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Additionally, our medical professionals are affiliated with several esteemed New Zealand Royal Colleges.

What are the potential benefits of medical cannabis compared to traditional treatments?

It's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Our comprehensive assessments determine the suitability of medical cannabis for each patient, weighing potential benefits against risks. We also advocate for an integrative approach to healthcare, where medical cannabis is used in conjunction with, or as an alternative to, traditional treatments.

Are there any risks?

Like any medication or therapeutic agent, medicinal cannabis has potential risks and side effects. The severity and nature of these risks can vary based on factors like the individual, the dosage, the strain, or the method of consumption. Our experienced team helps clients understand these risks and determine if it's suitable. It's crucial to obtain medicinal cannabis from reputable sources to ensure product quality and safety.

Is treatment expensive and is it covered by health insurance?

We strive to make our service affordable for everyone. Unfortunately, medicinal cannabis is expensive in New Zealand as it's not funded by Pharmac, requiring patients to cover the costs themselves. Cost depends upon the prescribed product and dose. The Cannabis Clinic is a private health provider and because

there isn’t a one-size-fits-all plan for plant-based medicine, we work closely with clients to ensure their personalised plan gets the best results. We are also an affiliated contract provider with Southern Cross Healthcare and an NIB partner ensuring an easier pre-approval process for some consultation options.

How can patients expect to find their lives improved?

While it's not a silver bullet to wellness, in our experience, medicinal cannabis has the potential to offer numerous improvements to a patient's quality of life. It's important to remember that while many patients experience significant improvements, individual results can vary. Ongoing communication with healthcare professionals is vital to monitor effects, adjust dosages, and ensure the best possible outcomes, which may include:

Symptom relief: Among the most immediate benefits, whether it's pain, nausea, muscle spasms, or seizures, patients may find significant relief, enabling them to engage in daily activities and improve their wellbeing.

Improved sleep: Sleep is one of our most commonly treated issues and many of our patients report better sleep outcomes with medicinal cannabis.

Enhanced appetite: For patients undergoing treatments like chemotherapy, or those with conditions leading to appetite loss, cannabis may stimulate hunger, ensuring better nutrition and weight maintenance.

Reduction in medication side effects: By either reducing or replacing certain medications with cannabis, some patients may minimise the side effects, such as cognitive impairment often associated with opioids.

Mood elevation and mental health support: Cannabis, CBD oil in particular, may offer relief from anxiety, depression, or PTSD symptoms.

Increased mobility: For conditions like arthritis or multiple sclerosis, the reduction in pain and muscle spasms may result in improved mobility, allowing for greater independence and participation in physical activities.

Enhanced social interaction: As symptoms recede and wellbeing improves, many patients find they're more inclined to socialise, reengage with hobbies, and participate in community or family activities they previously avoided.

Empowerment in health decisions: Our tailored treatment plans empower patients to be active participants in their healthcare journey. This often translates

to a more positive outlook and a proactive approach to health.

How do you address the stigma surrounding medical cannabis, and what efforts are being made to raise awareness about its potential?

Changing the outdated stigma surrounding medicinal cannabis is one of our foremost priorities. Much of the apprehension arises from misconceptions, lack of education, and historical biases. By taking a multifaceted approach and grounding our efforts in science, compassion, and transparency, our mission is to reshape the conversation around medical cannabis. Moving from scepticism to acceptance means that those who can benefit from its therapeutic potential can do so without fear of prejudice or judgment. We do this in a number of ways, including educational resources on our website; patient feedback; and working alongside groups that advocate for patient rights and medicine access.

THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST?

WORDS—
FIRST LOVE Self-care 86

DESKS WITH A LIFT-UP TOP AND AN UNUSED INKWELL IN THE CORNER.

One day, a girl called Ruth left a scrunched up note in my inkwell that simply read “I love you”; though, rather than write ‘love’, she drew a heart in place of the word. Over 30 years later, I can still picture that small ball of paper and its briefest of declarations in a pale blue scrawl.

And so, Ruth became my very first girlfriend.

Now of course, she wasn’t a real girlfriend. We were 10 or 11 years old (and she was a comically 10 or 11cm taller than me, at least), we never even kissed and I’m not sure we even ever held hands. In the playground, I got one of my mates to ask her to go out with me and she got one of her mates to tell me back that she would, but we never did (I did once pluck up the courage to call her, after dialling and hanging up countless times, to ask her to the cinema – she said yes, her dad said no). I thought I was in love, but we never saw each other again after heading off to different secondary schools, and my first love proper developed a few years later.

“Some of the pull of first love is thought to relate to imprinting,” writes Dr Luisa Dillner for the Guardian, “the psychological theory that we attach ourselves strongly to the first people we have certain relationships with; our mothers being examples of childhood imprinting.”

Combine imprinting with the fact that love has been shown to activate the same parts of the brain as addictions and the fact that first love occurs during adolescence while the brain is still developing, and it’s little wonder that it holds such psychological power.

Award-winning psychologist and author, Jefferson Singer, who’s work focusses on autobiographical memory, says that most people experience a “memory bump” between their teens and mid-20s, a time when we experience so many “firsts” and “positive memories”. As for first love, “it becomes, to some degree, a template” he tells the Washington Post: “It becomes what we measure everything else against.”

And for many, subsequent relationships are destined to fall short when compared to such idealisation. Lance Workman, co-author of Evolutionary Psychology, highlights the countless women bereaved during both world wars and their feeling that they wouldn't ever find love again, even describing it as a form of PTSD. Professor Sue Carte, a behavioural neurobiologist at the Kinsey Institute, argues that the same chemistry that allows first love is “probably the chemistry we need to overcome trauma”.

WAY BACK WHEN I WAS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL, WE ALL HAD DESIGNATED DESKS, AND THEY WERE REAL OLD-SCHOOL SCHOOL

However, Dr Nancy Kalish, a psychology professor at California State University who spent 20 years researching couples who rekindled their romance after many years apart, argues that there’s “nothing magical about first love” other than it is simply “the first”. The key to understanding it, she says, is realising how it shaped us, when everything felt new, and together “you decide[d] what love is”. The couples she studied often fell into a certain profile, most notably being younger than 24 when they first dated and being forced to break up for circumstances beyond their control.

For the first loves that married first time around, a YouGov study found 64% of couples to report that they are ‘definitely in love’ compared to 57% of the rest of the married population, a third of whom had considered leaving their partner compared to just 19% of those first loves. Those who marry their childhood sweethearts are also more likely to believe they’ll go distance. However, other studies have shown those who settled down with their first loves to have concerns that it could have stunted their personal growth and harbour regrets about not having had more sexual and general life experiences. One worrying study found 60% of respondents, despite being happily married, to have cheated on their spouse with their first love after often having reconnected online.

Dr Kalish says that such rendezvous are not necessarily cliched midlife crises – they’re happening with young parents in their 30s, “determined to have the control they lacked the first time

around, when situations or their parents stood in the way”. Such reunions, she adds, are simply “a continuation of a love that was interrupted”.

In the age of social media, reconnecting with old flames has never been easier and for those first lovers that do reunite –when single! – there are some statistics that are promising. A study by California State University founder former sweethearts who met later in life to have a greater than 70% chance of sticking together for good.

“Something from the past may feel more secure than the unknown,'' psychologist Anne Hollonds, former chief executive of Relationships Australia NSW, tells the Sydney Morning Herald. “It is not uncommon for us to think longingly back to missed opportunities… A lot of people have regrets about the whole sliding doors.”

JOURNEY TO WELLNESS

HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH

SPREAD ACROSS 160 PRISTINE HECTARES OF THE GOLD COAST’S CUMBRIAN VALLEY, EDEN

“I do occasionally miss a great wine list and a pudding,” admits Shona Philps, the retreat’s general manager, “but driving through the gates of Eden, with the lush green rolling fields, the purple jacaranda canopy, and the darling little Shetland ponies waddling around, it will never fail to make me feel like the luckiest GM in the world!”

The retreat’s tailored programmes –enjoyed over multi-day packages – cover everything from life coaching to fitness to nutrition and naturopathy. First-class facilities include a heated swimming pool, sauna, gym, and a spa that offers a range of massages and treatments. Yoga and pilates classes can be enjoyed inside or out – where also awaits natural mud baths, a tennis court, a massive flying fox, and walks that snake through World Heritage-listed rainforest. Guest cabins dotted about the valley slopes allow for soothing views across that rustling forest to the mistakable sounds of geckos and birdsong, which can all be cloaked in a spectacular mist or beneath searing sunshine and skies of brilliant blue –often all occurring within the same day.

“The last few years have seen a rise in taking care of our health and wellbeing,” adds Shona. “Eden has made health and wellness more accessible to a wider age range, and certainly more men than ever before.”

And it’s a wellness journey that Shona has also experienced firsthand.

“Five years ago, I was as far from a health retreat manager as you could imagine,” she tells Verve . “I weighed 110kg and was slowly self-destructing with food and overworking. Running luxury boutique hotels was thrilling and fast paced, but I wasn’t taking care of myself. Almost at breaking point, I made a few small changes and over a three-year period, lost 55kg.”

Bringing to the role her own life experience – both the weight loss and the end of a 20-year marriage, “I’m 40 now, I got married young” – has, she says, “allowed me to meet our beautiful guests in the space they are in”.

HEALTH RETREAT IS ONE OF THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE’S MOST SUMPTUOUS SANCTUARIES.

It prides itself on its holistic approach to wellness and respect for its land.

Is there a typical Eden guest?

“Eden has a few core values that we live and die by. One such being ‘connection’. We joke that you will always find your people at Eden! I believe that’s down to the diverse nature of the guests we welcome through our gates. It includes heads of industry, mums and dads, business owners, besties travelling together, and high-end travellers looking for a unique experience.”

The longest-running health retreat in Australia, Eden offers at least 10 classes a day which all play a pivotal role in its philosophy of nurturing through restoration. No guest is obliged to do anything, but they can choose from the likes of guided walks, frisbee golf, and boxing or pottery classes. Cooking demos are also on the menu.

As for the guest menu, the retreat’s head chef and naturopath work with local producers and biodynamic farms to concoct seasonal, predominantly organic dishes designed to promote wellness and reduce cravings, while tending to any dietary requirements and weight loss goals. Alcohol and caffeine are off the table.

“Every retreat homes in on different aspects of wellness, but I love how Eden has such a nurturing, grounded and a approachable aspect to health,” says Ellice Degiovanni, who operates brain-changing movement education sessions. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach, which I think is so important as

everyone is different, requiring differing elements in terms of their health.”

Can you tell us about your classes?

“They centre around functional neurology which concerns how to move the body in certain way to activate certain areas of the brain, and how the brain signals can affect how the body performs and feels day to day. Following an assessment of a guest’s movement, pain, health or mobility concerns, I can create a specified plan that will hopefully have them walking away from the session feeling more empowered to implement simple, long-term changes into their daily routines.”

Shona describes the 90-strong Eden team of experts and facilitators as “a resource beyond compare”.

“Each team member walks the talk and loves sharing their knowledge with our guests,” she says. “Want to know how to sleep a little better? Blair will sort you out. Always believed that your balance is terrible? Ellice has a plan for you. Need more movement that’s easy? Cain is your fellow.”

From those serving lunch to the masseuses to the people making the beds “all have a life experience and are keen to share it”. “The passion and authenticity they show for Eden and everything we offer our guests cannot be found in any other health retreat,” continues Shona.

Self-care 92
“THE PASSION AND AUTHENTICITY THEY SHOW FOR EDEN AND EVERYTHING WE OFFER OUR GUESTS CANNOT BE FOUND IN ANY OTHER HEALTH RETREAT.”

“Another thing I love about Eden is how the practitioners and classes encourage the same empowerment among the guests,” adds Ellice. “Because knowledge without knowing how to implement it into your life is just words on paper. Upon departure, guests have been given great strategies, techniques, and tools to feel confident about the future of their health and wellbeing.”

Shona says that it’s their hope that every guest leaves with a feeling of having been on a journey of self-discovery: “We hope they have had that magical moment of reflection, be it understanding what isn’t serving them currently, or finding an activity that they wish to do after Eden, or just simply discovering the joy of playing again.”

The personal connections that are the general manager’s favourite part of her day.

“I have been fortunate to have some of the most profound stories shared with me by Eden guests and they have absolutely made me a kinder, more empathetic human,” she says.

On a more practical level, Shona says that digital detoxing is an essential part of the overall programme.

“We’ve forgotten how it feels to be present in the moment,” she laments. “To not need to have our phones in our hands on

average 140 times a day. There’s no signal out here and the stillness that this brings into our guests’ journeys is profound. Allowing the space to make our own decisions, uninfluenced by Instagram, and welcoming other humans into our journey, is absolutely lifechanging if you allow it to be.”

Shona finishes the chat by revealing some exciting developments including a just-finished $10 million renovation that include a new wellness hub, Premier Double Cabins, and new treatment huts overlooking the valley.

“Our owner, the philanthropist Robert Christie, was a guest of Eden eight times before buying it in 2002, and he remains as dedicated to the core values of connection, digital detox, and health as ever,” she adds. “Working alongside Robert has been exhilarating and I can give you a cheeky hint by saying that there are plans to craft multiple programmes with some specific retreats and goals in the not-too-distant future as part of our ongoing commitment to being at the forefront of the health and wellness industry. So, watch this space!”

THE BUSINESS

OF BEAUTY

INSIGHTS FROM BIOME FOUNDER, REBECCA SPENCER

Walk us through your morning and nighttime skincare routine?

As a busy working mum, I’m all about a simple, effective skincare routine. In the mornings, a gentle, damp gauze cloth to wipe over my skin, holding it on for a minute or two to infuse some hydration. Next, a brightening, hydrating eye serum, and a good, targeted serum for the rest of my face, depending on my skin’s needs. In winter, I’ll often choose a hyaluronic acid serum to counteract dryness and in the warmer months, vitamin C serums help prevent pigmentation and environmental damage while boosting collagen production. For daytime, I use a moisturiser with antioxidants and SPF –SPF is a non-negotiable year-round!

At night, I always double cleanse and 2-3 nights I use a gentle enzyme exfoliant after cleansing. Next, an eye serum and then a few drops of Biome Perfecting Oil which stimulates collagen production, brightens, hydrates, reduces congestion, and smooths the skin. It really helps counteract textural changes that come with age – and smells and feels luxurious!

What motivated you to start Biome?

I’ve enjoyed many roles in the industry, including skin therapist, spa therapist, skincare educator and clinic owner, but I’ve always aspired to create my

own product. While living aboard a superyacht in Sweden with my little baby girl Billie I really started to question my ‘why’. We’d followed Billie’s dad as he captained the yacht and to be honest, I was feeling a bit lost and unfulfilled. I felt I knew what people were looking for when it came to skincare and what worked. I had a clear vision of a superproduct that would simplify skincare routines, so enrolled in an online small business course and began obsessively researching ingredients. Seven years later, Biome Perfecting Oil was born.

What inspires you to focus on skincare?

Women spend a great deal of time and energy taking care of others and I wanted to create something that made them feel beautiful, confident, and

brought a bit of luxury into their day. I’ve learned that most women are pretty confused when it comes to the world of skincare, and I don’t blame them! I encourage new clients to bring in their complicated mish-mash of skincare purchases so we can work together to streamline their routines. My inspiration for creating Biome Perfecting Oil was to help women achieve their best skin easily and enjoyably with a high-performance, multitasking product that treats several common skin concerns in one easy step. I wanted women to feel good about what they were putting on their skin, so included premium, clean ingredients with powerful yet non-irritating actives which work to transform the skin.

SLEEP TIGHT

AUCKLAND SLEEP TAKES A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO SLEEP HEALTH.

Their unique multi-disciplinary team works together under one roof to create a tailored treatment plan for individual sleep issues rarely resolved with a one-size-fits-all approach.

Can you explain the importance of sleep health?

Research proves that sleep has a significant impact on mood, mental health, immune status, weight, daytime performance, heart, and blood sugar.

Does one need a referral to book into Auckland Sleep?

No, we believe everyone should have equal access to sleep health, and always welcome any patient who needs our help. Sometimes we need information from your primary healthcare provider, which we organise with your consent.

What are the most common sleep disorders that you treat?

Although we treat all sleep disorders, the most common are snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, and chronic insomnia. First we ask patients to complete an assessment form, discussed with our multidisciplinary team, then we decide on a personalised plan.

Our approach to sleep disorders is one-of-a-kind. With a comprehensive multi-speciality toolkit available inhouse, we can address several aspects of sleep disruption, giving patients a nearly three-times higher likelihood of better sleep health.

What kind of sleep assessments and diagnostic tools does Auckland Sleep use?

We have an array of diagnostic tools. We can measure pressure and flow through the upper airway; breathing effort; pulse rate; electrocardiogram (ECG); nocturnal leg movement; body position; snore sound; sleep talking; brain activity (EEG); eye movement (EOG); and arousal (awakening) measurement.

The above help identify disorders such as sleep apnoea; central sleep apnoea; upper airway resistance syndrome; periodic limb movements; heart arrhythmias; REM sleep disorders (punching, flailing, kicking, sitting up in bed, jumping out of bed, talking, yelling or screaming); non-REM disorders (sleep walking, night terrors, sleep related sexual behaviour, confusional arousals); teeth grinding; abnormal nocturnal sounds such as catathrenia; sleep efficiency; and arousal disorders.

One unique type of home-based sleep study that we offer is the Belun Ring (aucklandsleep.co.nz/belun-ring ) which measure patients’ sleep for three nights to give us more accurate information adjusted for night-to-night variation. Many of our patients have

already tried some over-the-counter devices and we usually ask them to wear them on one night of the test. This helps the patient and us get a more accurate idea of what treatment may benefit them in the long run.

What resources and support does Auckland Sleep offer to manage sleep disorders?

We’re passionate about spreading the importance of sleep health. We’ve recently launched a satellite sleep hub project enabling all Kiwis throughout Aotearoa equitable access to good sleep. We also give talks in schools and organisations emphasising the significance of good sleep and how to get it.

How does one know if it’s time to book an appointment at Auckland Sleep?

If it’s a one-off sleep disruptor like a major event or pain from an injury, it’ss likely a temporary blip. However, iIf you haven’t been sleeping well for several weeks, start looking into solutions. We believe early interventions can bring sleep health back on track before it becomes a chronic problem.

Anitha Vivekanandan is the senior patient navigator and insomnia specialist at Auckland Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is incredibly important for your health. In fact, it’s just as important as eating a balanced, nutritious diet and exercising. A good night's sleep can help improve learning, memory, decision making and even creativity. And it should be the easiest way to keep your body and brain functioning at their best, right? Here are some tips for when shut-eye is a little harder to come by.

Bed is for sleeping

Sleep on it 1.

Don’t get into bed until right before it’s time to sleep! This strengthens the mental association between your bedroom and sleep; the more time you spend in bed before you sleep, the more your body gets used to being awake.

2.

Eat right and sleep better

Sleep plays a big role in our health and metabolism. Try adding these eight key foods into your diet to help enhance your quality of sleep: magnesium, banana, spinach, oatmeal, boiled eggs, almonds, chamomile tea and kiwifruit.

4. Get Active

Regular exercise can contribute to a blissful night’s sleep but it’s best to avoid intense workouts right before bed. Opt for light yoga or meditation instead. Take it a step further and exercise outdoors; sunshine goodness means more vitamin D, which means more serotonin, leading to better sleep.

5.

Keep your cool

3.

If your core body temperature is too

high, you struggle to produce melatonin—that magical hormone that sends you into slumber. Sleepyhead’s latest temperature regulating technology KülKōte, features fibres that absorb and release heat energy, to give you a more consistent sleeping climate. It’s an exciting new development in the bed game and already a game-changing sleep choice for many New Zealanders. When it comes to sleep, science really does matter.

Avoid Hidden Caffeine

You may know that coffee contains a high level of caffeine, but it can also be hidden in your diet. Did you know kombucha, dark chocolate and green tea have hidden caffeine which can affect your sleep?

Sleep experts, BedsRus aim to deliver a nation-leading sleep experience that extends far beyond the mattress. We spend a third of our life in bed—and BedsRus’ locally-owned bed and mattress stores have spent 30 years specialising in them, so you can trust the experts. Visit bedsrus.co.nz today.

Smoother & More Confident You!

Finesse Face and Body Clinic is proud to be the first truSculpt iD provider in New Zealand, as part of an exclusive partnership with Cutera.

TruSculpt iD is the latest technology available to permanently and non-invasively remove body fat. “We have been leaders in non-invasive cellulite and body contouring treatments in Auckland for 22 years,” says Sue Crake, owner of the Remuera Salon.

How does truSculpt iD work?

truSculpt iD uses a unique form of monopolar radio frequency energy that penetrates evenly and deeply and is able to treat deep into the entire fat pad - from skin to muscle. Once the applicators have been placed on target fatty areas, heat is dispersed evenly, causing irreparable damage to the fat cell walls which the body metabolises and removes permanently over the next 12 weeks. Real-time temperature control and monitoring sensors ensure a constant and therapeutic temperature is maintained for 10 minutes ensuring maximum fat disruption, resulting in 24% fat reduction with every treatment. Patient comfort is ensured through the highly engineered skin adhesives and temperature control which keeps the skin cooler than the underlying fat.

How is truSculpt iD treatment performed?

The initial consultation is performed to assess and discuss your concerns and desired aesthetic goals, then a tailored and customised treatment plan will be created. A total of six handpieces can be used per 15-minute treatment, and multiple areas can be treated on the same day. Once medical consent is completed skin adhesives are attached to the skin overlying the fat pocket followed by the handsfree applicators. The treatment area is wrapped in a cummerbund to minimise movement of handpieces during treatment. After 15 minutes of warmth is distributed into the tissue, the adhesives, handpieces and cummerbund are removed and the patient can return to normal activities.

How do I know if I am a candidate?

truSculpt iD is the latest in non-invasive fat removal procedures in minimising treatment time, maximising results and comfort whilst reducing downtime (there is none!). truSculpt iD is a great treatment for targeting stubborn fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise, or for a more global debulking option. truSculpt iD is not restricted by BMI or skin laxity concerns, making it a great alternative to cryotherapies. To learn more about if you’re a suitable candidate, book a free consultation with Sue at Finesse.

How many treatments will I need?

Your initial assessment and personal goals will determine the best course of treatment tailored to you, however patients will only require one treatment. Whether one or two treatments are required, all patients will see an effect at 12 weeks.

Is the treatment painful?

No! Patients report the treatment feels like getting into a hot bath. The heat at first can be a little intense, but just like a bath you become accustomed to the feeling and adjust to the treatment. There is no pain, no downtime and no massage required. Patients can return to normal activities immediately after with most patients only experiences some mild redness on the treatment zone which subsides in a couple of hours.

How long before I see my results?

Clients will begin to see a change in their silhouette from 6 – 8 weeks post treatment, but maximum results are achieved at week 12. Changes in skin quality, tone and texture are usually seen earlier. Each area can be treated once per 12-weeks but other areas can be treated before then.

LIP SERVICE

LIP & PERI ORAL ENHANCEMENT

It must be incredibly frustrating for those who have never smoked to develop ‘smoker’s lines’. Honestly, I have no one to blame but myself, and I feel foolish every time I look in the mirror.

But our mouths do work incredibly hard each day as we eat, drink, talk, pout, smile and laugh. So, it’s no wonder that our lips and the surrounding tissue are one of the first parts of our body to show signs of wear and tear.

Thankfully the doctors here at Clinic 42 have a huge toolkit when it comes to lips and peri oral enhancement.

Injectable hyaluronic acid is still the most popular tool as it’s a substance that occurs naturally in the body, attracts, and retains water, and can help lips to stay hydrated.

But while it sounds simple, the key is in choosing the right product for the individual concern and using the perfect technique to deliver the desired outcome.

New techniques and new products are launched at an alarming rate and that’s where the advantage of a doctor-led team practice shines through – many (experienced) hands make light work of researching and trialling.

From a patient perspective, you might be tempted to jump online and book in for a lip appointment similar to what a friend may have had. When what’s really required for your concern is a treatment to the area above the lip.

This could end up being a costly mistake which leaves your problem area unchanged if you don’t have a good relationship with your practitioner and a proper consultation.

More than one product may also be required. Depending on how much support your tissue needs, and how well these stronger products can be disguised under your skin, a combination of products is more likely to create a softer, layered, and natural effect.

If your concern is around the marionette lines (those leading from the corners of the mouth downwards) you may need different types of products again. A product to lift and enhance the lip, and a product to fill out and volumise the line or fold. Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL gives his view on two new releases from St. Hugo.

St. Hugo has built a legacy crafting fine wines from Barossa and Coonawarra. Originally settled in the 1840s, Barossa is Australia’s most famous wine region, famed for its undulating landscape, historic churches, and quaint bluestone cottages watching over lines of primordial vines and grand gum trees.

Located in the heart of the Limestone Coast, Coonawarra is another of South Australia’s great red wine regions, its dense terra rossa soil credited for some of the country’s best cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, and merlot.

It all began in 1837 when Johann Gramp migrated from Eichig, Bavaria, and planted vines along the banks of Jacobs Creek. The first vintage was so successful that a new winery was built in Rowland Flat by Gustav Gramp, Johann’s son. From 1920 Hugo Gramp led the winery through a unparalleled growth until his untimely death in an aviation accident in 1938. In 1983 Hugo’s legacy was honoured with the release of the first wines under the St. Hugo label.

Today, St. Hugo is a household name, with winemaker Peter Munro continuing the Gramp legacy with every vintage having been awarded gold.

DENNIS and ROSAMUND KNILL

Once a commercial car park now transported into a cosy dining room with half its space opening onto a quiet al fresco streetscape in Parnell, Barulho is a survivor in a city that hasn’t been kind to Spanish restaurants.

Tapas are the perfect food for a crowd, so if you’re in a gathering take a trip around the top-notch menu that includes a selection that yields unexpected gems such as olives marinated with fennel and orange ($12); wood fired sourdough, grissini, goats cheese, honeycomb and truffle ($18); buttermilk fried chicken, chipotle mayo and lime ($28); fish ceviche, avocado crema, charred pineapple, with blue corn chips ($28); and polenta crumbed oyster, mushroom milanesa, crème fraiche and lemon ($18).

The kitchen’s talent shines through with sharing mains like stuffed pork and beef meatballs and tomato sugo ($36); paprika grilled octopus, chorizo, fennel and almonds ($38); charcoal grilled beef with chimichurri, thyme roasted mushroom and crispy potatoes ($48); and traditional paella made with clams, prawns, fish, saffron rice, roast peppers, broad beans ($46).

Pleasing sides comprise crispy potatoes, aioli ($16); wood roasted carrots, smoked labne ($18); brussel sprouts, lardons, currants, roast grapes ($18); and baby cos radicchio, fennel, apple and anchovy dressing ($18).

’18

Barossa shiraz; RRP $40

This bold, clear-headed, easy-drinking wine delivers great balance in structure and complexity, supported with fine silky tannins that linger long across the palate. Pair with beef, venison, lamb, and game.

’18

Coonawarra

Ripe and aromatic, prompted with an air of complex aromas in the mouth. Serve with barbecued meats, roasts, and casseroles.

As for as desserts ($18) – custard tart and rhubarb; date pudding; ice cream and whiskey caramel; or dark chocolate mousse, pistachio, raspberry, and mandarin –they may all sound a bit clichéd, but they’re just done so well here. Whatever you chose, everything is better with a glass of something from the appropriately Spanish-heavy wine list.

And the verdict? There are some great dishes here. Fine produce and fresh flavours can border on mundane unless the cooking is cutting edge, so it’s easy to see why Barulho is such a great dining destination.

Prawn, Pea & Pea Shoot Soup

Serves: 4

Ingredients

350g dried rice stick noodles

1.25 litres chicken stock

1 small onion, sliced

4 garlic cloves, roughly chopped

2 red bird’s eye chillies, pounded

6 kaffir lime leaves, pounded

2.5cm piece fresh galangal, sliced and bruised

2 lemon grass stalks, trimmed and bruised

3 tablespoons fish sauce

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice

1 tablespoon grated palm sugar

2 celery sticks, sliced

2 tomatoes, peeled, deseeded and diced

500g (about 50) raw prawns, peeled and deveined

150g peas

a handful of pea shoots

a handful of fresh herbs, such as perilla leaves and coriander

Method

Soak the noodles in a bowlful of hot water for 20–30 minutes until softened. Drain well, shake dry and set aside.

Put the stock, onion, garlic, chillies, lime leaves, galangal and lemon grass in a saucepan set over a medium heat and bring to the boil. Simmer gently for 10 minutes until the soup is fragrant, then strain the stock through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean saucepan.

Stir in the fish sauce, lime juice and sugar, and set over a medium heat. Add the celery and tomatoes and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the prawns and peas, and simmer for a further 2–3 minutes, until the prawns are just cooked through.

Divide the noodles between bowls and pour over the soup. Serve topped with pea shoots and herbs.

Nasi Goreng Chicken

Serves: 4

Ingredients

2–3 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus extra for shallow frying

500g skinless boneless chicken thighs, thinly sliced 250g small raw prawns/shrimp, peeled and deveined

800g cooked long-grain rice, cooled and chilled

2 tablespoons light soy sauce

1 tablespoon ketjap manis

4 eggs

chilli sauce, to serve

Red Chilli Paste

4 large red chillies sliced

2 teaspoons shrimp paste

2 garlic cloves, roughly chopped

4 shallots, thinly sliced

Garnish

sliced tomatoes

sliced cucumber

crispy onion flakes

coriander leaves

Bibimbap & Other Asian Inspired Rice & Noodle Bowl Recipes published by Ryland Peters & Small, distributed by bookreps.co.nz , RRP $44.99.

Method

Make the chilli paste. Place the ingredients in a pestle and mortar and grind to make a fairly smooth paste. This can also be done in a small blender.

Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a wok or large frying pan, and fry the spice paste over a medium heat for 1–2 minutes until softened and aromatic. Add the sliced chicken and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until lightly browned. Then add the prawns and stir-fry for 2 minutes.

Add the rice along with a little extra oil if needed. Stir well, then add the soy sauce and ketjap manis and continue to stir-fry for a further 1–2 minutes until the rice is heated through and evenly browned.

Keep warm.

Shallow-fry the eggs in 1 cm of vegetable oil for 2 minutes until the whites are cooked through and the yolks are cooked but still runny.

Divide the rice between bowls and top each one with a fried egg. Garnish with tomatoes, cucumber, onion flakes and coriander and drizzle with the chilli paste.

Sweet Potato Noodles with Broccoli in Black Bean Sauce

Serves: 4

Making your own black

You can soak or wash the black beans if you like, but I prefer to cook them as they come for added saltiness in the dish.

Ingredients

300g sweet potato noodles

3 tablespoons peanut oil

5cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced

1 red onion, sliced

250g broccoli florets

sesame seeds, toasted, to garnish

Black Bean Sauce

2 tablespoons doenjang (Korean bean paste)

125ml sake

60ml mirin

2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar

2 tablespoons dark soy sauce

2 teaspoons sesame oil

3 tablespoons fermented black beans

Method

Cook the noodles by plunging them into a large saucepan of boiling water. Return to the boil and cook for 1 minute until al dente. Drain well, refresh under cold water and shake dry. Set aside.

Next make the sauce. Whisk together the doenjang paste, sake, mirin, vinegar, soy sauce and sesame oil until smooth, then stir in the black beans. Set aside.

Heat the peanut oil in a wok or frying pan set over a medium heat and fry the ginger for 10 seconds until fragrant. Add the onion and stir-fry for 1 minute, then stir in the broccoli and continue to stir-fry for 1 minute, adding 1 tablespoon cold water, until the broccoli is a vibrant green.

Add the sauce and cook for 2 minutes until the broccoli is tender. Finally add the noodles and stir until heated through. Serve in bowls garnished with toasted sesame seeds.

Chicken Noodle Salad with Sesame and Soy Dressing

Serves: 4

Ingredients

250g dried black rice noodles

100g about 7 radishes, trimmed

2 carrots, trimmed

125g snow peas, trimmed

1/2 cucumber, deseeded

250g cups torn cooked chicken breast fillet

Japanese micro herbs

1 tablespoon black sesame seeds

Wafu Dressing

1 small shallot, very finely chopped

2 tablespoons Japanese soy sauce

2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar

2 tablespoons dashi broth

2 teaspoons sesame oil

2 teaspoons caster/granulated sugar

1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger

1/2 teaspoon crushed garlic

Method

First, make the wafu dressing. Put all the ingredients in a sterilised glass jar, screw the lid on tightly and shake well until amalgamated.

Plunge the noodles into a large saucepan of boiling water. Return to the boil and simmer for 5–6 minutes until al dente. Drain the noodles and immediately refresh under cold water, washing well to remove any remaining starch. Drain again and dry thoroughly on a clean kitchen cloth. Put the noodles in a large mixing bowl and set aside.

Next, prepare the vegetables. Thinly slice the radishes, carrots and mangetout. Cut the cucumber into thin strips, like the carrot.

Arrange the noodles in the middle of each serving plate and place the vegetables in groups around them. Add the cooked chicken and drizzle over the dressing. Scatter over the micro herbs and sesame seeds and serve at once.

Grown from Love

Over the following pages, some artisans of Aotearoa share their stories – along with the occasional cake, coffee, or vino! – with Verve. To this dedicated bunch who have turned their passions into professions – along with all the other Kiwi creatives out there – we salute you!

We begin by sitting down with Helen Meehan, who, with help from her husband John, runs Olivo olive grove in Martinborough. “John and I come from the north of England,” she tells us. “We met in the late Seventies and always wanted to travel.” Their travels initially took them to the US where John worked at an international accounting firm, before returning to the UK and eventually settling in New Zealand in the mid-80s. Helen has had roles in the “early days” of the computer industry as well as being the first Chief Information Officer for the New Zealand government and working for Telecom NZ: “All a long way from olive growing!”

What are your strengths as a team, and how do you complement each other?

“John is a very strategic accountant, meaning that I know my financial position and inventory on a daily basis –so important to keeping a small business on track. I manage everything to do with marketing, making our oils and customer relationships. I always say that Olivo is ‘boutique, artisan and gorgeous’, and John always says – for ‘gorgeous’, read ‘profitable’!”

The couple continues to travel regularly, John loves golf, and Helen has a couple of hectares of garden to keep her busy.

She’s also a member of Chaine des Rotisseurs – a French culinary guild which brings together chefs and lovers of fine food – for whom she organises events in Wellington. “Of course, we love to eat well, and everything I eat, I think where would top quality olive oil enhance this!”

What do you most love about the owning an olive grove?

“I love being able to take our oils right from the tree to the table and make exciting and innovative food from our different extra virgin and infused olive oils. Who would have thought about olive

oil over or in ice-cream or olive oil in cakes? Also, olive trees are so beautiful and great survivors, so it’s lovely to be able to wander in the grove while considering what you can produce from such an amazing tree.”

What sets Olivo apart from other olive growers?

“Probably our range of infused oils which are different – think orange, lavender, vanilla, cumin, smoked paprika. We are also still the only olive oil tasting room in Martinborough after 20 years, so people visit us as a change from wine tasting.”

As for life in Martinborough, Helen says what’s not to love about such a beautiful wine village.

“Martinborough is a very close-knit community that looks after its people,” she adds. “We try to contribute where we can. I do ‘meals on wheels’, and John has been on the steering group to develop the new town hall. Plus, we’re only an hour from Wellington if we want a taste of city life.”

Coffee, Bread, and Pottery

Indeed, the intimate St Heliers cafe-cumgallery – previously Tower Bakers – is the space where owner and pottery maker Tony Swanson met his Japanese wife, Yuki, when she wandered in seven years ago. They soon bonded over their love of all things creative.

“Yuki plays the ukulele, and loves cooking and baking and sewing,” Tony tells me over a couple of flat whites. Not that the couple always has enough time – or energy – to pursue their creative endeavours owing to their 3am starts three times a week to fire up the ovens and begin their baking: Tony taking care of the breads, and Yuki the pastries. (I ask if he can combine the clay- and breadmaking in the same ovens and the words have barely left my mouth when I realise their stupidity. Tony patiently points out that his breads bake at around 230C whereas the kiln heats to 1,250C. That would be some seriously burnt toast.)

“I’m learning Japanese at the moments, so try to spend an hour a day on that also,” Tony continues. I ask him how it’s going. “Terrible!” he chuckles. “I’m not a linguist. I’m better at reading and writing it than I am at speaking it. I love the calligraphy.”

He reaches for a clay vase from the shelf to show me his pottery mark – the equivalent of an artist’s signature –which is a kanji, meaning ‘tree’. Tony and Yuki visit Japan regularly (he also has a brother who has lived there for more than 30 years). “When I’m there I make sure to visit all the old pottery villages, they’re incredible,” he says. “It’s an aesthetic tradition over there, and I think a lot of the pottery around the world, particularly in New Zealand and Australia, stemmed from the Japanese influence back in the 1950s.”

Tony’s pottery teacher was also Japanese. He tells me he digs some of the wild clay he uses, usually from Raglan or the Coromandel and leaves in the stones and crystals to make each of his pieces – which take weeks to create – more characterful and unique. The glazes too, Tony makes, often using wood ash giving some of the pieces a lustrous, metallic effect. “Walking though our native bush, you have so many greens and blues and earthy tones, and I try to capture that in choosing my glazes.”

Directing me to another corner, Tony points to a collection of pottery this time

by Peruvian artist Marisol Lambercy, who lives locally. “She’s an amazing potter,” Tony says, “and gets a lot of commissions. She is an expert, creating using a wheel. Mine tend to be more often handbuilt using coil and pinch.”

Tony bought the gallery-cafe around 30 years ago following a trip round Europe with an old girlfriend, who was a journalist. “I was a graphic artist, and we were contemplating doing some sort of illustrated publication on traditional European cuisine,” he says. “And that is when I became interested in breads –particularly the breads of Portugal, Spain, Italy, and southern France. It all really appealed to me, the smells, the working with your hands – but it is hard work!”

Fittingly, the cafe soon became a hangout for local creatives.

“I’m trying to create something that’s more than cafe, more than a pottery shop, with the addition of the gallery,” says Tony as he wraps me up a parcel of brioche loaf – baked by him – and a black cherry custard boule made by Yuki. “I want this to be a place of inspiration.”

Let There Be Light

“Having spent a lot of time in Central Otago, primarily Wānaka, the scenic landscape of the mountains and lakes are where I find a sense of calm, giving me space to create new designs,” he tells Verve . “I also take inspiration from architecture, in particular residential homes that have been built in Wānaka.”

The mid-century movement, also, draws Gus’s curious eye with its use of “beautiful furniture materials” including leathers and oaks. “The striking use of colour really intrigues me,” he adds. “I really admire the curves used, as well as the details such as lines that lead your eye to sharp, pointy edges.”

Gus has always had a passion for designing products that “serve a purpose”, hence the lure of lighting and furniture design.

“Having previously worked for both an electrician and joiner, I combined my skillsets with industrial design. I’ve always admired great design and architecture, I felt a need to design natures inspired products to bring the best of nature indoors, creating an atmosphere and mood setting for others to enjoy.”

What type things do you need to consider when designing lighting?

“Proportions for any design are critical. It’s important to ensure that a design isn’t too large or small for any interior space. Ensuring that the design emits enough light, whether that be feature or task lighting. Creating a sense of atmosphere is something I enjoy doing in people’s homes or businesses.”

Do you have a favourite wood to work with?

“I really enjoy using bamboo. Its superior strength has excellent durability, and the grain structure makes for an interesting detail which we receive a lot of comments about from our customers.”

Aside from being great for the environment, are there other benefits to using sustainable materials?

“There are so many benefits! The main reason is, of course, environmental, but it’s also important to ensure that the products you’re bringing into your home are healthy and safe for everyone who inhabits it. It’s vital to think about the entire lifecycle of any product, to ensure that once it’s use has been completed, which is inevitable, that most, if not all, components can be stripped down and recycled.”

Finally, can you tell us a little about your team at Form 53?

“I feel incredibly fortunate to work with an exceptionally talented and dedicated team. Most of our team work select hours as we’re still an expanding business, and each member brings an important skillset that we simply couldn’t operate without. We enjoy social interactions with each other outside of work, and also enjoy sharing stories, design ideas and our passions for music!”

Gus Leen may only have graduated in 2021 – with a Bachelor of Design from Massey University’s College of Creative Arts – but he’s already established eminent design studio, Form 53, in Timaru. The studio hand-builds lighting, homewares, and furniture from woods like bamboo and rimu, to bring “the best of nature indoors”.

Enlightening Insights

Verve talks to Laura James from Social Light .

What does well considered lighting do for a space?

Imagine stepping into a room where every corner is bathed in a warm, inviting glow. With carefully planned lighting, you can create the perfect ambience for any occasion, like cosying up with a good book, hosting a dinner party, or simply unwinding after a long day. By designing a lighting plan, we ensure that the lighting is balanced and will create the desired effect.

At what stage would you recommend you’re contacted when doing home alterations?

The earlier the better. Planning is key with any renovations, and lighting is no different. Often, it’s an afterthought, which can be limiting. Working with what you have and planning for any improvements will be much more achievable and affordable with a wellconsidered lighting plan.

Does lighting affect mood?

Significantly! Bright, natural light can uplift our spirits, enhance alertness, and promote a sense of wellbeing. In contrast, dim or harsh lighting can induce feelings of fatigue, stress, and

even sadness. Thus, the choice of lighting is a powerful tool for creating the desired.

What is the different between yellow light and white light?

Colour temperature plays a crucial role, and they both have their placedepending on the space and its use. Cooler tones (‘white light’) are like daylight, mimicking a more energetic atmosphere, while warmer hues (‘yellow light’) create a cosy and relaxed ambiance.

Your L.I.M. Linear LED Pendants are stunning. Are these made to order? Yes, all our brass and aluminium is milled, polished, and powdercoated in the Waikato, then assembled in our Cambridge showroom. Kiwis Know Coffee

Central to this burgeoning coffee scene is the art of cupping, a ritual that has gained immense popularity among coffee aficionados.

Our coffee journey began in the 1980s when espresso machines started popping up in cafes. Coffee isn't just a drink, it's an experience that Kiwis have embraced wholeheartedly, reflected in the thriving cafe culture that permeates cities like Wellington and Auckland. Our coffee scene is characterised by an emphasis on freshness, locally roasted beans, and a commitment to ethical sourcing.

Cupping, a formalised way of tasting and evaluating coffee, plays a crucial role in this culture. Coffee aficionados and industry professionals gather to participate in cupping sessions where they scrutinise beans, assess aromas, and savour flavours. The process is a sensory journey that allows participants to distinguish between the finest nuances of coffee profiles, from fruity Ethiopian Yirgacheffes to rich Indonesian Sumatras.

In New Zealand, cupping goes beyond mere quality control for coffee roasters and cafe owners. It's a social event, an educational tool, and a way to connect with the global coffee community. Coffee enthusiasts can explore diverse origins, varieties, and processing methods through these sessions, deepening their appreciation for this beloved beverage.

Aotearoa’s coffee and cupping culture epitomises a commitment to excellence and innovation. It's a culture that values collaboration, sustainability, and the pursuit of perfection in every cup.

New Zealand's coffee culture has been steadily evolving over the past few decades, and today, it stands as a testament to Kiwis’ passion for quality brews and unique flavours.

Iced Espresso Tonic

This drink has become a staple at Ground Coffee during the summertime.

If there's anything us Kiwis long for it’s a classic NZ summer, and we’re hanging out for the one we didn’t quite get last season.

The marriage between ice cold bittersweet tonic and a beautifully extracted single origin espresso is unlike any other, and, until you try one, you may not fully understand the grant of this flavour combo – the profile of this drink is similar to organic cola with a citrus twist. We like to change the single origin coffees week on week to highlight different characteristics in the drink. Coffees from Kenya can emphasise berry notes whereas

coffees from Ethiopia or Central America can accentuate more floral, herbaceous or chocolatey notes.

Summer is just around the corner but we want to start now, so we’re offering 15% off your Iced Espresso Tonic throughout October!

Unlocking Success: The Hammond & Co Story

Please share the inspiration behind The Stay Hub and the subsequent launch of Hammond & Co?

After couch-surfing his way across 47 countries, Eric Hammond’s entrepreneurial journey began when he realised the potential short-term rentals held for a business. The Stay Hub’s origins began when he decided to test the market by renting out a room in his apartment in 2016. After hosting over two hundred people, host referrals saw him managing his first properties, eventually allowing him to quit his day job as an electrician to explore the market further.

In 2018, The Stay Hub was born. It has since become Auckland’s largest short-term rental company, managing over 200 properties across greater Auckland. Being the entrepreneur that he is, the idea of launching a long-term property management company was a core part of Eric’s vision long before Hammond & Co’s launch earlier in the year.

Eric has come a long way from a futon on the floor in his Auckland city apartment. When did longterm renting factor into his business plans and how do the two companies work together?

As Eric expanded his portfolio, he realised that deciding between short and long-term renting is a common and critical decision for property investors. Developing a business model where consultants have an understanding and expertise across both markets means they can have unbiased discussions with property owners. Our experts can provide tailor-made solutions based on an owner’s specific property, objectives, and circumstances. The ability to offer equitable and honest information on both rental models is what sets us apart.

Verve chats with the team behind The Stay Hub and Hammond & Co Property Management to find out what makes them stand out in the short- and long-term Auckland property market.

Because The Stay Hub and Hammond & Co can work in tandem, this means owners can seamlessly switch between the two models if they desire. Shifting from longterm renting or vice versa is not a simple process. Having a team of experts managing this ensures owners are set for success from the get-go. Our businesses offer owners the opportunity to make changes as their personal circumstances dictate or based on market conditions.

There are a wide variety of long-term rental property management companies in Auckland. What makes Hammond & Co stand out?

Hammond & Co was designed to be a boutique, full-service property management

company. Industry research has revealed, in general, service levels of property management companies are deemed to need “room for improvement”. Hammond & Co has been built to be that improvement. Led by Gina Colcord, with over fifteen years of experience working in every facet of property management, Hammond & Co’s mantra is personalised, exceptional service. We offer tailored solutions that fit each client’s specific needs, working with owners in a partnership that creates trust, rather than taking a rigid ‘one size fits all’ approach. Quite often, property managers can be non-responsive, slow to remedy issues, or they are driven by quantity over quality when building portfolios. Hammond & Co’s purpose is to excel in all the areas where others fall short.

Eric Hammond’s journey from tradie to successful property management entrepreneur is quite remarkable. Can you share some key lessons he learnt along the way?

Eric’s suggestion for inspiring entrepreneurs is to get the right advice from a business coach or mentor. Early on in his journey, he mapped out a business plan and worked with his own mentor. He did a lot of things that people said he shouldn’t be doing - that it was too early and his business was too small. With the right knowledge and people around him, his decision to challenge the status quo is one of the reasons The Stay Hub has become so successful and also enabled the launch of Hammond & Co.

In so doing, she invites the viewer to experience a state of becoming through an encounter with imagined space and time.

DUMB MONEY

5 October

Dumb Money is an American biographical comedy-drama about a regular guy who flips the script on Wall Street after his viral post causes ordinary Americans to invest in Gamestop, skyrocketing its stock prices, and losing hedge funds billions of dollars. Emmy nominees Paul Dano, Shailene Woodley, and Nick Offerman star in this irreverent, David and Goliath true story of everyday Americans who brought Wall Street to its knees.

STRANGE WAY OF LIFE

12 October

A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twentyfive years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their old friendship....

ANATOMY OF A FALL

12 October

This year’s Palme d’Or winner, Anatomy of a Fall is a French courtroom crime thriller that centres around a woman on trial for the suspicious death of her husband, in which their 11-year-old blind son is the only witness. Directed by Justine Triet, the film explores the fall out of Samuel’s death, and simultaneously traverses Samuel and Sandra’s complicated relationship, and the years of resentment that led to the decline of their marriage.

26 October

A biopic by Olivier Dahan, Simone explores the life of Simone Veil, a Holocaust survivor who went on to become a French politician, human rights advocate, and a trailblazing feminist. Told through a collection of non-chronological memories, the film goes through Veil’s childhood to her fight for women’s reproductive rights, told through pivotal events of the 20th century.

SHAYDA

26 October

Shayda is about a young Iranian mother and her six-year-old daughter who find shelter in an Australian women’s refuge during the two weeks of the Iranian new year. Shayda, escaping an abusive husband whom she fears he will take young Mona from her, finds refuge at the women’s centre. The celebrations signify an opportunity of rebirth for Shayda and young Mona as they navigate a new life.

LOOP TRACK

2 November

Thomas Sainsbury writes, directs, and stars in this New Zealand film about a man who, on the verge of a mental breakdown, retreats into the bush for a four-day journey which turns into a fight for survival. A mix of off-beat comedy and psychological suspense, Loop Track is a creepy but entertaining look into a not-so-peaceful tramp, and the malevolent presences that accompany it.

Taylor Swift can no longer be simply defined as a singer. No, she now has risen to the role of all-powerful pop icon, with her new Eras world tour, performing concerts likened to religious experiences by devoted fans, dubbed Swifties. Fans fork out an excessive amount of cash to attend, learn chants to scream during her songs, and make piles of beaded bracelets to pass out to each other in a show of unity. I would liken the frenetic Swifties to the Beatlemania of the 60s, with obsessively devoted fans who would do anything to see their idols.

Lucy's Corner

This month Verve’s star teen reviewer LUCY KENNEDY talks Taylor Swift - the ‘man’, the myth, the legend.

You may think I’m exaggerating, but I’m really not. Recently, in Seattle, Swift’s fans generated seismic activity that was equal to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake. How many other artists can say that? When tickets for her tour went on sale, Ticketmaster’s website shut down due to the insane amount of traffic to the site. In the US, tickets range from $50 to $500 –if you’re lucky. Resale has been reported upwards of $11,000. Ticketmaster’s head of music, Davis Marcus, has stated that only 5% of fans who attempted to purchase tickets were actually able to obtain them - but that hasn’t stopped them. More than 10,000 heartbroken Swifties who braved the battle for tickets and came out empty-handed have gathered outside US stadiums instead, partying, picnicking, singing along, and bringing cities to a standstill.

Taylor Swift has now become the subject of a world-first international academic three-day symposium, named Swiftposium. This will take place in Australia and will examine the impact Swift has had on the world today, economically and culturally. It speaks volumes that what academics are choosing to examine is ‘the influence of Taylor Swift’ above all else (global warming, the pandemic, and so on). Swift now holds a place as one of the most influential pop stars in the world, but she is more than just that - she has risen to the status of a mythological being, uniting fans across the globe… although sadly she won't make it here to New Zealand.

Two day fantastic rides.

Horoscopes

23 September –22 October

Overall, there is a very hardworking and conscientious energy that is present in your life at this time. You will be self-sufficient both financially and emotionally, as you often equate money with emotional security. It is a good time to cement a partnership, relationship, or friendship, and to fall back on your natural diplomacy to bring about peaceful agreements and come out on top.

23 October –21 November

This month opens new realms of communication and heightening personal expression as it will eventually lead to success. If you stay true to your values and beliefs, you get a little closer to your goal. Relationships will be consistent this month. You will begin to focus on a special relationship in earnest; it will either be very romantic or very combative.

22 December –19 January

You need to protect your boundaries as much as you can because that’s going to help you do a little bit more selfnurturing. Make sure that you do have the time to invest in yourself. You might be so busy taking care of your family, your work colleagues, and your friends you’re bypassing your own needs. In the last week, you'll be bright and sparkling again with plenty to say.

The period will bring news and surprising events or developments. There may be potent encounters with others. There may be magnetism in romance. Singles fascinate all around them with their allure, while the coupled-up captivate their sweeties anew. Through diligence, responsibility, and attention to detail you will achieve great things and can finally say that you have completed your task or attained your goal.

20 January –18 February

You’ll be quite intent on making a name for yourself. You’ll do a fine job of it – and be acknowledged for your efforts. Home, career, and relationships all seem to be going well and moving along at a fast pace. You will have the opportunity to connect with a soulmate or a situation which elevates and energises you. You finish out the month with warm and intense family connections.

PISCES

19 February –20 March

Your creative side is showing well and your teaching and counselling skills are at a peak now. Work should be very fulfilling, and this is a good time to get some recognition there, bringing forth new or unusual people, ideas, encounters or forms of business or communication. You may have some relationship difficulties, so be ready. The crisis is likely to involve freedom or control issues.

CANCER

21 June –22 July

This is an emotionally volatile time for you. Your emotions may need physical expression. There will be surprises and deep feeling. A domestic or emotional situation may be changed or reversed. This is a phase where you're looking inward and seeking a new personal truth. There will be change with work, health, the spiritual search, and education that will alter the road on which you travel.

ARIES

21 March –19 April

This period brings new creative or recreational activities. Some may find romance with an unusual individual. Others may enter a new phase of an established romance through new activities. This is a good time for pursuing some artistic endeavours or for making room for a special someone at home. Be sure to count your change; money matters could get away from you this month.

LEO

23 July –22 August

This period indicates abundance in all areas of your life. You would feel blessed and deserving of everything that comes your way. You would be financially stable and secure with solid investments. It is a wonderful time for teaching and learning and exchanging visits with siblings and friends. You’ll be far more sensitive to the needs of others, and more willing to stifle yourself to be sociable.

TAURUS

20 April –20 May

You need to be very clear on your priorities and where you want to invest your time and energy. Be careful not to let work overwhelm you. It’s also the time to reach for your desires and dreams. This period may usher in a cycle of social or romantic activity that will see the return of people from the past or past situations.

VIRGO

23 August –22 September

This period is wonderful for your creativity, and you find yourself doing a lot of innovative work. You will be very protective of what you have accumulated over time, and slowly and steadily you increase your net worth through saving money and safe investments although there can be some major expenses that soak up the excess, so remember your budget. You need to find yourself some quiet time.

GEMINI

21 May –20 June

This would be an encouraging period. If you continue to work toward the fulfilment of your dreams and do not allow disillusionment to dampen your enthusiasm, ultimately you will experience prosperity and success in your goals. There would be, however, a tendency to be distracted by day-today affairs and general busyness, so prioritising your activities and carefully managing your time is essential.
