FROM THE TEAM Another month has flown past, and again we’ve been blown away by the support we’ve received from all around the world with our fourth issue of Vertiqlè Magazine. The whole team is incredibly grateful and humbled by the feedback and acknowledgements we’ve been getting.

This month, we feature works from Austria to Australia, Belarus to Brazil, the United States to the United Kingdom. In all seventeen different countries on five different continents. The level of interest shown has reinforced in our minds the universality of black and white photography, and the emotional connection it makes with people everywhere. Likewise, our readership continues to grow, both in number and location. Our website which features previews of every editorial is now being visited regularly by people in fortyseven different countries – including those we least expected to have visitors from.

Growing statistics are one thing, but such

growth can only come about by publishing content that speaks to people – content which by way of its artistic beauty, its technical brilliance, its embedded social message, or even simply because it pushes a boundary.

We settled on forty editorials split across two volumes this month. Each editorial meets one or more of those criteria, while at the same time reflecting the sheer beauty of black and white photography. We’ll let you work out which criteria go with which editorial.

We’re already curating the December and January issues, and we’ll be applying the same criteria again. In the meantime, enjoy the November issue. We hope you love it as much as we do!

Erin Carter.

W

e took some time out this month to chat with twenty-seven year old Scottish model, and actor, Erin Carter in between modelling gigs With both Scottish and Irish ancestry, Erin spent her early childhood in Buckinghamshire before attending school in London, and then returning to Scotland to study her Masters at University of Strathclyde.

In the past few years, Erin has modelled most genres: bridal, fashion and beauty for both commercial and editorial clients.

We chatted briefly about how she came to be involved in modelling.

“I fell into modelling! After being cast for some acting work and having had headshots done for that, I had made what I thought were just friendly connections with the make up team, this later turned out to be the start of my modelling career.

The MUA in charge of the shoot contacted me asking me to model for her in her videography promotional material. I was initially shocked as I had never thought of myself suitable for modelling but I was delighted to! Work then spiraled from there and I began to grow a portfolio.“

“I’ve been lucky to work with some incredible creatives including photographers, stylists, hair and MUA all of whom have always made me feel confident in myself and any personal insecurities. In light of this I feel the industry has gone through changed days, women are now made to feel confident about their bodies and within themselves which I think opens doors for more powerful results.”

In terms of passions and hobbies, Erin says her biggest passion in life is travel “I love to experience different cultures and ways of life.

I have incredible memories from all over the world but my two most memorable locations are Darling Harbour, Sydney (where my dad took my for my 21st birthday) and the dancing 40 NOVEMBER 2019

fountains in Dubai - they provoke incredible emotion.”

We chat briefly about black and white, and the current season’s inclusion of black and white by iconic labels such as Celine and Armani – not just in their designs, but also in their marketing.

“On a daily basis we see life in colour. Black and white to me feels deeper and cleaner. I believe it brings more sophistication whilst highlighting different moods and textures, texture being a key element of fashion shoots. Black and white is ultimately where the world of modelling began.”

Who’s behind the

image ?

Jon Robert

T

here’s something immediately captivating about the work of English born photographer, Jon Robert.

There seems to be a purpose to the images Jon creates they’re not rehashes of commercial or stock imagery, nor are they overtly sexualised to draw cheap social media clicks and fans.

Great portraiture is about capturing the subjects’ soul and telling their story. Jon’s work tends to do that to a degree; perhaps not yet to the extent of the masters like Richard Avedon or Helmut Newton, but certainly far, far beyond the many images we review on a daily basis.

Born in England but living on the rugged west coast of Scotland since a young boy, Jon’s interest in photography began by photographing events that he ran and promoted at clubs throughout Europe.

Stepping into photography fulltime has been a goal, but options for running a photography business on Scotland’s west coast are limited; particularly if weddings aen’t your thing (don’t write to us about trashing wedding photography ... we’re not, it’s just not our thing, nor Jon’s).

We chat briefly about the alternative angle to Jon’s work and his use of models with tattoos and piercings.

“I submitted work to Twisted Edge magazine which is an alternative style magazine in the UK, but is also known worldwide within the industry. From my work with Twisted Edge, I also got the opportunity to become the lead photographer for the “Charliez Angelz Ink Squad” - a group of more than 700 inked models worldwide and more than 30 photographers who work on behalf of different alternative

publications. Next year I’ll be working with the editorial crew at Twisted Edge and a following up a few other projects which I am really excited for.”

In terms of inspiration, Jon says he is a big fan of Australian photographer Peter Coulson (so are we).

“Peter is a truly fantastic photographer who shoots black and white, when you see his work and see the videos of him shooting its just amazing to watch and he is definitely an inspiration behind my work. “ Closer to home, Jon takes advice and input from Robert Campbell.

“He doesn’t do as much black and white work, but he has been such a motivational and genuine friend to me, and assisted me in moving forward with my photography in so many ways. He gave me the encouragement to stick with the style I had built without even knowing it.”

“When I shoot I always do certain sets with black and white in mind. I just feel it brings out the emotion of shots in such a different way. Stripping the colour out forces the the viewer to focus on the pure beauty of an image through the texture, highlights and shadows which aren’t always as present in colour.”
