Together with counting the materials, material takeoff must also confirm the material type required. For example, this could be an electrical cable type or the grade of steel.

There are mainly four key types of measurements required for takeoff in the majority of the infrastructure projects:  Count - The estimator must count the numbers needed for specific individual items.  Length - Some items, such as pipes and cables, are measured primarily in terms of length.  Area - Few of the materials also need a measurement of the surface area. This could include elements such as flooring and cladding.  Volume - Measurements of volume may be necessary for some materials, such as the amount of asphalt used per unit area or the concrete needed to lay the foundation.
