Tadgh McSweeney:

“The

image I get from the translation of the poem is

dominated by the image of the arch, mentioned with the desolation An arch can evoke the transition from one era to another etc. I am reminded of and destruction of a war zone all around.

Tennysons’ Ulysses:

I am a part of all that I have met;

Yet all experience is an arch where through

gleams that untraveled world, whose margin fades

for ever and forever when I move

but of course the arch has also been used as a symbol

to express triumph.
