EDWARD STAUDENMAYER Broadway Star
EDWARD STAUDENMAYER
: Yes, I’m very excited. I’m rocking this moustache and this black hair because I just played Gomez Addams in The Addams Family out in California opposite Teri Hatcher, which was loads of fun. Now I’m starting to work on Don Quixote.
Tell us some of the highlights of your career thus far. I’ve been on Broadway, I’ve toured North America multiple times back and forth with many different big productions, from Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, Anything Goes, South Pacific. I was on Anastasia when the pandemic hit and closed all the theaters. I was recently on Broadway as part of The Girl from the North Country. It was a play that had Bob Dylan music involved in it. Yes, I was wondering if it was from his song. Yes, that’s in there. It’s a wonderful piece. It won the Tony Award for Best Orchestrations. It’s a great score. It was up for a Grammy.
Congratulations, that’s enormous! Where are you from originally, Edward Staudenmayer? I grew up in Southern California. I call Palm Springs home. I went to Palm Springs High School and was in drama in there. I went to UCLA and majored in theater and then I moved to Germany. I did Cats auf Deutsch in Germany for a year before I moved to New York and became a New York actor.
So you had to learn German. I did. And you know, with my last name, they’re like, “Oh, this German man, he’ll be great.” I sat in the room with this woman named Margot going, “Nein, nein, do that again, I shoot you with a gun.” She threatened me with violence to get my accent to be perfect. So who influenced you? When did you get the acting bug? I got it in high school. I was in the production of The Music Man. I was a freshman and I just absolutely loved it. Then I kept doing the spring musicals. Then finally, my senior year, I quit the football team and got in the fall play. We won a big award and we got to bring our play to Los Angeles to perform.
Then I got into UCLA and I won a big award at the Music Center in Los Angeles. I got to perform at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. And that’s what got me the bug.

Rhett Palmer
Interview by
Q
RHETT PALMER: We’re talking with Broadway star Edward Staudenmayer this morning. You look like a Broadway star –handsome guy with long flowing black hair, moustache. And you’re going to be playing Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha at the Riverside Theatre.
Edward Staudenmayer
So I started getting into drama, much to my parents’ chagrin at first, but they were pretty proud later on. I certainly play my father a lot on the stage.
What do you mean by that? My dad was a cop. He was a big macho guy; Sergeant Stud, they called him. I just played a lot of characters like my father: Gaston in Beauty and the Beast I could say my dad was probably somewhat similar to Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha, tilting at windmills, especially towards the later parts of his life.
But this was the guy to do the impossible dream, and he influenced others to go after their dreams, right? Absolutely.
When I to talk to Broadway stars, you’re kind of like a living Picasso. You go out there and perform. That audience is gone at the end of the night, never to be the same again, and that performance is gone forever. It’s like burning the Picasso at the end of the night. Have you considered doing more in film? Well, sure, and that’s why I love being a theater actor. And unfortunately maybe this is all I
dreamed of; I just wanted to be a working actor. And that’s all I am, Rhett. I’m not famous or anything, but I’m a working theater actor.
I’ve done a little bit of film and TV and commercials, but it’s not my medium; that’s the medium of a director. They’re in charge, they edit it. They take your performance and they have control over it. When I’m in the moment, I’m in control of my performance.
Yes, we rehearse and the director tells you things and you follow their direction. But when it comes down to it, you are alive in the moment and there’s nothing like it in the world. And that’s why I love it, and that’s why I love performing on the theater. And I intend to do it the rest of my life.
Name some of the famous folks you’ve worked with. I was just working with Mare Winningham on The Girl from the North Country. I’ve worked with Martin Short. I learned so much from him. What an amazing comedic talent, and to be in the room with him was just spectacular.
I just worked with “Desperate Housewife” Teri Hatcher, which was fantastic. We had a great time playing Morticia and Gomez Addams.
I also see here that you’ve done Radio City Music, the Christmas Spectacular. I was a Santa at 32 years old. You see how hard Santa Claus has to work in the Radio City Spectacular.

They’re flipping him around, jumping over things. I had to do like five shows a day. It was a hard job and they needed somebody young like me to do it back then.
I saw that show almost every year for like 35, 40 years. I probably saw you on stage. I didn’t realize how much I’d love playing Santa Claus. It’s such a wonderful part. But then I think of the responsibility – because you don’t want to ruin Christmas for all the kids – you’d better be good.
So, this Man of La Mancha, is this the first time you’re playing Don Quixote? It is the first time I’m playing Don Quixote. I’m thrilled. This has always been a dream role for me. It’s a great thing.
Why? The score is one of the most gorgeous scores ever. It’s one of every baritone’s favorite score to sing. So I’m thrilled to finally get a chance to get to play it. The language is so beautiful.
I was just reading how it was developed back in the ‘60s and it was a cross between offBroadway and Broadway, between commercial
and experimental theater. It’s just so fabulously theatrical in the way it’s presented. You’re just not seeing pieces like this come out that much anymore.
It’s amazing how you can become somebody else entirely for a couple of hours up on that proscenium stage. Yes, and it’s also another reason why I love being a theater actor, because you do become somebody else. When I got to be in The Music Man when I was a freshman, I got to be somebody else. And it was the biggest wonderful opportunity for me to escape and to let my imagination be someplace else.
So yes, I’m a character actor. I escape in characters.
I cannot wait to start work on this production. It’s hard material and I am so looking forward to the challenge. It’s going to be so exciting to work on it.
Have you ever been to Vero Beach before?
I’ve never been to Vero Beach. I’ve spent a lot of time down in Florida,
Tampa mostly. I’m so thrilled to be a snowbird this year, I cannot tell you. I’m a big tennis player and pickleball player.
I’m excited for you. Edward Staudenmayer playing the Man of La Mancha, Don Quixote himself. It’s one of the most famous scores ever on Broadway. Yes, I cannot wait.
You know, I think it’s the 50th Anniversary of the theater, so they’re celebrating this with this wonderful work. It’s one of their first shows of the season, and we’re running from January 3rd through the 22nd.
We look forward to having you here. Thank you very much for taking time out of your busy schedule to be with us.
I really appreciate it. Thanks a lot, Rhett.
Man of La Mancha opens January 3 and runs through January 22 at Riverside Theatre. Get your tickets at riversidetheatre.com, or call the box office at (772) 231-6990.

THE COMEDY DRAMA INSPIRED BY TRUE EVENTS
By Stephen Sachs
This new comedy follows Maude, a fifty-something unemployed bartender, who buys a painting for a few bucks from a thrift store. Despite almost trashing it, she’s now convinced it’s a lost masterpiece by Jackson Pollock worth millions. But when world-class art expert Lionel Percy flies over from New York and arrives at her trailer home in Bakersfield to authenticate the painting, he has no idea what he is about to discover.
One of the most honored musicals of the American theater, Man of La Mancha was inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ 17th Century masterpiece, Don Quixote. Man of La Mancha is a powerful, funny, and heartbreaking musical celebrating the perseverance of one man who refuses to relinquish his ideals, and who is determined to see life “not as it is, but as it ought to be.”

TRAVELS
BY STEVEN
Staying on Track!
by Steven Eidelberg
Ideveloped a love of travel from my parents but must give it to my father for my love of traveling by train. Train travel slows down the hectic pace we have all become accustomed to, plus gives the added bonus of going through some destinations only wild animals and ardent hikers have the ability to take in breathtaking views or take you back in time when life was a little bit slower and more refined.
There are far too many train journeys I'd love to review in just one article, but I’ll try to give you a hint of some fantastic ideas that will get you thinking of either taking a train vacation as a destination unto itself or pairing as a part of a larger journey. Taking Amtrak in a sleeper car across the USA for some amazing views can be fantastic for those on a budget (my friend recently did that for a wedding we attended in San Diego and loved it – see my article on
San Diego, Issue 127). We’ll focus on two companies: one for those whose budgets are unlimited to those who have a more mid-scale budget but want to experience unique trains and journeys as well.
Belmond, known for its luxury hotels, also offers several great train experiences. From the Scottish Highlands on The Royal Scotsman for 2–5 night journeys across Scotland to the mountains of Peru on The Andean Explorer for 1-3 nights with a stop in Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca (from which I saw the most amazing pack of Alpacas running free on the way from Cuzco to Puno) to the most famous train of all: The Venice-Simplon Orient Express where you can experience train travel at its ultimate!
While you can take the Orient Express all the way on the original Paris to Istanbul route, I found the best and most affordable way to experience this one-of-a-kind hotel on wheels is to pair it with a

trip to/from Paris or Venice for one night of luxury from a time gone by. Leave Paris in the evening in time for a classic dinner in the black-tie Dining Car followed by an expertly mixed cocktail to the tunes of a grand piano in the Bar Car with sumptuous overnight accommodations and wake up the next day enjoying views in ultimate luxury with a sumptuous late lunch before pulling into Venice…a journey of a lifetime.
Moving to North America, in addition to Amtrak or VIA Rail which is Canada’s version of Amtrak with some interesting routes as well, I am a big fan of the Rocky Mountaineer. This company has a focus on breathtaking scenery you can only see by train in either the Canadian Rockies or the American Southwest with overnights in hotels along the way for journeys from 1-3 nights. It is a great concept for those who don’t necessarily want to sleep on a train but want to view the beauty of North America at its finest.
The Canadian Rocky route from Vancouver to Banff or Jasper is also an extremely popular route for people going on an Alaskan cruise and I think an awe-inspiring pairing of the spectacular ocean and mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Their newer Southwestern route launch was originally derailed
(pardon the pun) by the pandemic but is now in full swing taking travelers from Moab to Denver and is perfectly paired with a visit to Las Vegas: definitely a calming way to escape the fun and madness of that crazy city and enjoy the majestic beauty of the USA’s southwest canyons accessible only by train.
While the Southwest route currently offers only Rocky Mountaineer’s Silver Leaf Service, when traveling through the Canadian Rockies I recommend their Gold Leaf service for a more expansive glass roofed train car, larger seating and fantastic meals while onboard.
Whether you go Amtrak or Via Rail, Rocky Mountaineer, or splurge for Belmond see the world by train…it is one way to keep your sanity on track (pun intended) in this every crazy and hectic world.

Show Me the Father
Rated PG STARZ, Prime Video by Penny Cooke
Warning: Get your tissues and favorite comfort food ready before watching this film.
The Kendrick Brothers’ films have a way of tugging at your heartstrings, and this one is no exception. While their previous films are fictional stories that portray biblical truths, Show Me the Father is a documentary. The many real-life, mess-to-miracle stories are told by the ones who lived them and will deeply touch you. And you don’t have to be a father or have a father to enjoy the film.
The powerful documentary drew me in with the first line: “One of the greatest needs God has put into the heart of every human being is for a father.” By the end, I could only sit for a while uttering, “Wow. Just wow.”
Show Me the Father captures and keeps your attention with its continuous flow of true stories and thought-provoking points given in eight heartfelt segments: A Father’s Impact, A Father’s Brokenness, A Father Figure, A Father’s Heart, A Father’s Redemption, A Father’s Embrace, A Father’s Assurance, and A Father’s Blessing.
Early in the film, statistics are given from the US Department of Health and Human Services about fathers and fatherlessness, which have had a profound affect on our society. Fathers should be a source of love, protection and provision, but so many are broken themselves and pass that brokenness on to their children. As Dr. Tony Evans states in the film, “Father wounds are all around us.”
Is there any hope? How can someone redeem the lack of a father or of a good father? Show Me the Father will help men realize it’s never too late to be a good father, or a good mentor to someone who needs a father figure. And that it’s never too late to find the love of their “Heavenly Father” who is waiting for them to call out to Him.
The only criticism I could find for this documentary is that there is no mention of the importance of the relationship of daughters to their fathers. But I suppose that would be a whole other film. Perhaps next time.
Overall, I cannot say enough good things about Show Me the Father. The subject matter is so vital and relevant that my husband, who grew up without his father,
said he wishes it could be mandated for every man to watch it for the protection and health of families.
Whether you are fatherless, or you had a father who missed the mark, or you feel you’ve missed the mark yourself, you will be blessed by and find hope in this film. If your understanding of God—your Heavenly Father— is skewed by what you saw in your earthly father, you simply must see this film.
A standing ovation goes to the Kendrick Brothers for recognizing the importance and need for Godly fathers and for having the heart to take action to make a difference.
And for your information, Show Me the Father can be purchased alone or as a multi-feature with Courageous Legacy, the Kendricks’ remastered rerelease of their 2011 film, Courageous. How might more good, Godly men change the trajectory of our country?

he Moncuit family has been growing wine in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, in the heart of Côtes des Blancs, since the 19th century. Pierre Moncuit and his wife Odile Moncuit-Delos took over in the mid-20th century. It is home to some of the most magnificent Chardonnay vineyards and produces some of the region’s finest Champagnes. Called Blanc de Blancs, meaning “white of whites,” this Champagne is made exclusively from Chardonnay. This Champagne house farms a total of 37 acres and the majority of the vines are 45 years old or older.
What makes Pierre Moncuit unique is all of the wines are produced from a single year regardless if they are labeled non-vintage or labeled with a vintage. The non-vintage wines spend a minimum of three years resting on their lees while the vintage wines are allowed to develop from six to eight years. (Lees are tan-colored dead yeast particles that collect at the bottom of the tank during fermentation. This type of aging allows the wine to have increased aromas of toast and sweet nutty flavors.)
In order to experience the wine in its purist form, no wood is used during the aging process, known as élevage. This is an important part of the wine-making process. Think of it as the wine growing up from an adolescent to maturing as an adult. The wine undergoes malolactic conversion, the process of changing the wine from the harsh malicacid to the softer lactic acid.
Since 1977, daughter Nicole Moncuit has managed the vineyards and made the wine, while her brother Yves has managed the sales. More recently, Nicole’s daughter Valérie has been actively assisting in the cellar.
I recently introduced The Grand Cru “Moncuit-Delos” NV to my wife for her birthday. We shared it with a few of our friends and they LOVED it!
It is refined Champagne that is soft, easy yet a little racy, and has the minerality you would expect from this region. I found the aromas of ripe apple with orchard fruit apparent. There is a creamy long satisfying finish. This is a hardworking, committed-to-perfection Champagne house.
If you have a celebration coming up with friends and family, the Grand Cru Moncuit-Delos NV will be a nice surprise.
To all my friends, Happy New Year!

The Promise of Piano TEENS WHO CARE: Dhyana Mishra
Thumb on C… there you go… index finger on D…” It was my first piano lesson – well, the first one I was teaching. I’d sat on piano benches since age five, but at 14 decided it was time to give back, so I took on the role of piano teacher at “Promise in Brevard,” a nonprofit that provides housing and other facilities to adults with cognitive and physical disabilities.

Lee Stockner’s Music Box Method instructional keyboard
On that first day teaching Promise’s special needs residents, I brought along my own yellowing and wrinkly piano books, the same ones I used when I began taking lessons. My students that day were Brooke, Matthew, and Garrison, all adult residents at Promise with speech and cognitive disabilities, such as Down syndrome.
But after that first day of teaching, I quickly realized that many of my students were struggling. Learning music presents mental challenges even for the best of players, but pairing these challenges with cognitive disabilities adds a new layer of difficulty. In particular, I could see that the ins and outs of traditional music notation – rests, ties, dotted notes – became mental hurdles for my students. When Matthew played “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” for example, he became frustrated, shaking his head back and forth and wring ing his hands as he tried to read the notation.
I came home from the Promise campus that day determined to find a solution. Perhaps there was a more effective way to expose the joys of music to those with special needs. After doing some research online, I found Occupa tional Octaves Piano™, a book series written by Lee Stockner, a special needs music educator from Long Island, New York.
Stockner’s series utilizes his own “Lee Stockner’s Music Box Method,” a simple coding system involving colorful rings that are placed on a student’s fingers to correspond to colors in the music. If a student sees a green-col ored “D” on the page, he knows to press the key D with his “green” finger.
I bought some of Stockner’s books, and the results with my Promise students were immediate and astounding! Brooke, for example, was able to soar through five songs in one lesson, and by the end of 30 minutes she was using all five fingers on one hand – something she hadn’t been able to do in previous lessons.
I noticed similar progress with other students: within their first lesson using Stockner’s books and techniques, there was a positive change in their performance, understanding, and attitude. The students felt accomplished and happy with their fast-paced progress, and it made me feel so proud to see them grow musically! (Continued next page)

Just as my students were beginning to blossom using Stockner’s method, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Ripped away from face-to-face lessons at Promise, I started wondering how music instruction and education could still flourish, even if we now required computers and Zoom calls.
Reaching out to Stockner personally in the summer of 2020, I created video demonstrations of his curriculum that could be featured on his website, occupationaloctaves.com. The videos, called Dhyana’s Demos, are slow demonstrations of certain popular pieces from Stockner’s book collection.
– Jeffrey Kringer
One of my first recordings was of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” using an LED ring light, a keyboard, and my phone. I placed the colored rings on my own fingers, stated the song title clearly, and then played the nursery rhyme under tempo so that viewers could focus on my hand position and the movements of my fingers.
More than 40 Dhyana’s Demos videos are now available on Stockner’s website to students around the world without charge. They range from the simple “Mary Had a Little Lamb” to the more complex “Bach’s Minuet in G Major.”
For me, creating these videos has been a joyful journey, as I’ve learned from and bonded with Lee Stockner through our love for music and passion for bringing the Occupational Octaves Piano™ experience to a larger audience.
These days I’m back at Promise in Brevard every Sunday teaching my students in person. More than two years, 35 visits and 100 lessons later, I still feel that same thrill I experienced on my first day of teaching – because I know that I’ve made someone’s day a little bit brighter.

Fresh Start
by Beth Walsh Stewart
At the beginning of the year, you may seek a fresh start in different ways. You’ll make plans to be more disciplined. You’ll go through the closet and remove what hasn’t been worn to make room for the new. Maybe you’ll peruse your email lists and take the time to ‘unsubscribe’ to those regular notices that are no longer read. What about cleaning your old relationship hurts? Any plans there?
In a way, choosing to forgive an old resentment is like hitting the unsubscribe button at the bottom of an annoying, repetitive email. With one stroke, it will never trouble you again or claim even a moment of your attention. When you unsubscribe from historic hurts, you are freed up to live in this moment where joy and peace reign.
But you don’t want to let it go, right? Don’t think I don’t understand; I get it. My hope is that you’ll reconsider and start this new year by taking a look at some of the emotional restructuring that has taken place at the hands of resentment and fear. You see, fear and resentment actually change the way you think. They change your mindset and create an atmosphere of distrust and isolation.
Each one of us is made of three distinct natures, all rolled up in one human being. Our lives work best when all three of those natures are running smoothly. Blockages in any one of them impedes happiness. Your physical nature is reading these words. Your spiritual nature can do the healing work necessary to forgive. Your soul nature which houses the mind, emotions, and will – well, that’s where the healing will take place.
Pain and suffering are real in relationships. Sadly, not dealing with pain and suffering in conscious ways will only create more of the same. Some of us avoid the feelings or the people that we think created them. Some of us have honed defense mechanisms like blame to walk us out of accountability, relieving us of the need to take action. Worse, some of us have decided to keep our world small, and we’ve boxed ourselves in with the memories of pain, grief, distrust, or heartache. We relive old discomfort, and rarely allow others inside. That’s a new problem in itself. We were created to connect. It’s unnatural when we don’t. What’s going on inside of you? Are you allowing a negative memory to decide how abundant your life can be? By holding onto ill will, you are actually limiting your potential, your possibilities, and your participation in the circle of life. When you run your life based on how you feel, you tap the shallowest portion of your intellectual pool
and make life decisions from that vantage point. Remember, the soul portion of the human being is wonderful and deep. The soul is made up of emotions, the mind/intellect, and the will.
Forgiveness taps all parts of the soul. You feel angry or hurt, and a resentment forms. From this point, you can decide if you like how you feel. You can ponder the choice to be angry. Do you want to wallow in negativity hoping to exact some sort of punishment, or can you see the hurt through to the end result where you’re separated and alone?
In this view, you will realize that your anger hasn’t changed the perpetrator of your pain at all. Your resentment isn’t tied to their accountability in real life. That is only happening in your head. Your real power is in forgiving.
What if you chose to love them ‘although’ they hurt you? What if you enlisted your spiritual power to eradicate anger, fear, and pain and replace it with love? Your will holds the final card. What action will you take?
Negative emotions can make you give up on your potential and all future possibility for success if you listen to them as if they are Truth. Emotions lead you to engaging intellect. Once engaged, intellect leads you to decisionmaking. That’s how the soul was created to work. Forgiveness comes more easily to those who don’t stuff or get stuck in emotions. Why is this?
Because forgiveness is not a feeling; it is an act of the will. The choices you make become the life you lead. Choose well. Let love trump fear.

REV’S VERSES
by Pastor Rich Ienuso
What Does it Mean to Get Saved? Touch Jesus
by Pastor Alex Pappas
What does it mean to get saved? Getting saved means that you have made a decision to make Jesus the Lord of your life. That you believe He is the Son of God.
Many people make getting saved or becoming a Christian a very complicated thing. The Bible teaches us that to get saved the requirements are as follows:
ROMANS 10:9 (NKJV)
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
The requirements are to confess and believe. Jesus did everything on the cross so that all we have to do is believe that Jesus died and rose again and that He is the son of God and we will be saved.
Many people believe there are a lot of requirements needed to be saved. An example would be that you need to first get baptized before you can be saved. If that were the case, then how is it possible that when Jesus was on the cross, He told the thief hanging on a cross next to him that “today you will be with me in paradise?” All he did was sincerely believe.
The beautiful thing about being saved is the fact that once we believe, no matter where we are at in life, this is the moment our walk with God begins. Then we start following it up with the things the Bible instructs us to do, for Grace comes to us when we get saved. That is called justification. All the things that proceed after that are called sanctification. That is living out our salvation, practically every day, by being obedient to the Word of God.
Isn’t the grace of God just one of the most amazing gifts given to man?
In Mark 5:25-34 we read about a woman with a blood problem who heard about Jesus. She spent all her money on doctors, but she got worse. She said if she could touch His garment she will be healed.
She reached out in faith and touched Jesus’ garment and she was healed after being diseased for twelve years!
No matter what you are going through, you can reach out in faith and be healed.
Trust Jesus. Jesus still heals. There is hope. Receive His healing touch.
Jesus told her that her faith has made her whole. She went in peace, healed of her disease. Peace and healing comes from Jesus. Receive His touch today.
God bless you and keep you, Pastor Rich
