“Voice Bloom” Jingyi Xu IND-402-01 Capstone Studio: Exhibit/Experience Pratt Institute Prof. Kate Hixon“Voice Bloom” is a project celebrates the transformative power of speaking up. The inspiration of this project is based on my own experience.
Personally, I am afraid to speak up my own opinions because of feared and shy when we had group disscussion in class, and it leads me lose many chances to share my thoughts and contribute to my group. I found out there are a lot of students who are just like me. So I decided to use visual lights transformed from voice to inpire people like me that could speak up for themselves bravely.
Speak up or stay silence? In history, human were taught to remain silence, the more you say, the higher chance you will exploaded into dangers. In some cases, it is a legal right, The Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution permits people’s right to remain silence when they are facing arrested. However, when there are injustice, we were encouraged to speak up and advocate for one’s own needs, rights and opinions, but, understanding and applying this concept can take some efforts, especially as we navigate through evolving social, professional, and personal landscapes.
You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you DO NOT SAY “
The Ethics of Speaking Up discusses the ethical considerations of when to speak and when to remain silent. Rabbi Cutler suggests asking ourselves if our voice will make a difference, how it affects our future effectiveness, and how we will view ourselves in the future if we don’t speak up. This perspective emphasizes the importance of being fair to others and loyal to our values by speaking up against injustice, resonating with William Faulkner’s advice to never fear raising our voices for honesty, truth, and compassion against injustice.
The Importance of Voicing Opinions Against Injustice addresses the critical role of speaking out against discrimination and injustice, arguing that silence and inaction contribute to the perpetuation of these issues. It points out that discrimination not only persists but is widespread, affecting various aspects of society and individual lives. (Thrive Global)
In the article “ Why it is important to voice your opinions against injustice?” (Aggarwal, C. 2020), it encourages taking a stand and converting thoughts into actions as essential steps towards change, invoking Albert Einstein’s warning that the world will not be destroyed by those who do evil but by those who watch them without doing anything.
From the research on the topic “speak up”, I get a deep understanding on this topic that speak up not only about speaking your minds, but more importantly is what you want to concey to people, and what you want to be heard.
A lot of people feared speak up, becasue they might loose their right under power. However, speak up is what must be done, to protect ourself, to express our point of view, to gain the rights we deseve. Here are some of the benefits about „speak up“ in different views.
Speaking up in healthcare, especially regarding patient safety, embodies the practitioner’s values, advocating for the well-being of patients and upholding standards of care. This action demonstrates a commitment to ethical practice and personal integrity.
When individuals speak up, they often find allies who share similar values and experiences. This can lead to stronger bonds among colleagues who are committed to patient safety and quality care, fostering a sense of community and mutual support within healthcare settings.
Encouraging medical students and healthcare professionals to voice concerns enhances safety and respect in clinical settings. This fosters a learning environment where everyone feels valued, promoting vigilance and accountability.
Showcase the variety of ways in which voices can influence and alter the environment, mirroring the diversity of human expression. The goal is to celebrate the uniqueness of each voice and the collective beauty it creates when harmonized with others.
Fear of the consequence: People often fear the repercussions of speaking their minds, such as punishment or backlash, particularly if they have had negative experiences in the past.
Lack of ability: Many individuals feel they lack the necessary skills to address difficult topics effectively. They fear that their attempts to discuss challenging issues will lead to undesirable outcomes, discouraging them from trying again.
Fear of Offending: The concern about offending others and potentially harming relationships makes some individuals reluctant to share their true thoughts, particularly in a culture that may value politeness over candidness.
Fear of Appearing Incompetent: The worry about seeming uninformed or inexperienced can prevent individuals, especially those newer to a field or younger, from asking questions or speaking up.
Fear is the biggest factor that lead people choose not to speak up, so I continued my project based on this factoe. Continuing my project from the aspect to encourage people to speak up and be brave.

Cultivate Appreciation for Diversity
Showcase the variety of ways in which voices can influence and alter the environment, mirroring the diversity of human expression. The goal is to celebrate the uniqueness of each voice and the collective beauty it creates when harmonized with others.
Provide an engaging, memorable experience that combines art, technology, and interaction, sparking curiosity and wonder about the interplay between sound and light, voice and emotion.
Default mode features a gentle, pulsating light in the flowers to attract participants. Voice activation mode transforms the installation into a dynamic light show that visually mirrors the speaker’s emotions and intensity.
This article explores how combining visual and auditory stimuli affects emotional perception. This study provides insights into the psychological impact of audio-visual integration in art through psychometric and EEG analyses.
Emotional visual music, an innovative form of expression that combines elements of visual arts and music, aims to investigate human aesthetic perception. This unique art form explores how audio-visual integration can enhance emotional experiences by synchronizing visual animations with music.
Overall, combining visual and auditory elements in artworks significantly enhances emotional experiences. It not only increases the intensity of emotions but also enriches the levels of aesthetic experience, allowing viewers to experience more profound and multidimensional emotional responses.
The combination of visual and musical elements in emotional visual music has been shown to be an effective emotional stimulus. The research confirmed that visual music serves as an emotional stimulus through a two-dimensional emotional assessment (valence-arousal plane) and measurements of frontal alpha power asymmetry. This method not only enhanced the emotional experience but also scientifically validated the psychological impacts of combining visuals and sounds (Lee, Latchoumane, and Jeong).
Based on the research, I decided to make an installation that could encourage people to speak up and gives them power to do so. The first imagination is flowers, they are beautiful but also strong to resist the wind. I hope to transfer this power to the viewers.
I explored different materials including plastic, acrylic, twist stick, paper to find a more physible and opreable materia to utilize. Also, I considered color and texture of the material to work with light in my design. The whole purpose for this model is to be inspiring, warmth and encourable to viewers.
Interactive deisgn:
This installation interact audiences by their sound. Viewers‘ make sound through microphone, and the lights in the flowers will respond according to the rythem.
This installation utilizes arduino to programm the flower stimulizing by sound. The stem uses transparent acrylic to see through. The whole techonology feeling is alike the cold society, that we are been suppressed. It forms a contraction with the warmth of light.
The flower symbolize the each of us, the light symbolizes people‘s inner strength. As people speak to the flower, they will clearly see the imapct of their voice, and realize the power of inner strength, that could be beautiful and lightened our life.
