Best Wishes

Viviene Pearson Chief Executive Officer, South African Insurance Association

Dear delegates, colleagues and

partners,It is with immense joy, pleasure and heartfelt warmth that I welcome you to the African Insurance Exchange 2025 (AIE2025) – our continent’s leading insurance gathering hosted by the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) and the South African Insurance Association (SAIA) AIE is a place where minds connect, purpose is reignited, and the heartbeat of the insurance profession is felt in every conversation, handshake and shared idea.

Our theme this year, “The Baobab Advantage: Multifaceted Growth and Continuous Evolution”, invites us to draw inspiration from one of Africa’s most enduring natural symbols. The baobab stands tall not just because of its strength, but because of its adaptability, resilience and ability to nurture life even in the harshest conditions. It is a symbol of what we, as insurance professionals, represent: rooted in values, reaching for progress and steadfast in our mission to protect.

Like the baobab tree, revered across Africa for its deep roots, enduring strength and life-giving properties, our industry too has withstood trials, adapted to evolving climates and continued to provide shade, sustenance and shelter in times of uncertainty This year’s theme pays tribute to the resilience of our profession and the promise of innovation, collaboration and growth –rooted in African wisdom and inspired by a global future.

Reflecting on the year past

The past year has not been without its challenges; it has been a year marked by transformation on all fronts. Locally, South Africa saw critical developments in the regulatory landscape, the acceleration of digital solutions and a stronger public focus on consumer protection and financial inclusion On the African continent, cross-border collaboration and regional integration have begun to unlock new possibilities in risk pooling, reinsurance and regulatory alignment Globally, climaterelated events, cyber threats and geopolitical tensions reminded us of the interdependence of our risks and the need for cohesive responses.Through it all,we have remained true to our calling: to serve with integrity, to innovate

boldly and to rebuild lives and businesses when they need us most. As a profession, we are becoming more responsive, more informed and more courageous. As insurance professionals, we have not only navigated these complexities, but done so while continuing to serve our clients, protect communities and uphold the integrity of our industry

There’s something extraordinary about coming together after all this to reflect, reconnect, and reimagine. AIE is not just a conference; it’s a homecoming.

Looking forward: The evolution continues This year ’ s AIE2025 programme is as diverse and dynamic as the baobab’s branches. Over the coming days, we will explore critical questions shaping our profession and its future, including:

• How artificial intelligence and data e c o s y s t e m s a r e t r a n s f o r m i n g underwriting, customer engagement and claims efficiency

• What ESG-driven leadership means in practice for insurers, reinsurers and intermediaries.

• How we can reimagine healthcare financing and access across Africa.

• What it takes to build resilient institutions in a volatile economic and regulatory environment.

These sessions are more than topics – they are urgent conversations that will help shape how we lead, how we grow and how we show up for the communities we serve.

But even more than the content, it’s the magic in the hallways, the side chats over coffee, the laughs at the gala dinner and the spark of a new idea that make AIE unforgettable. This is where careers are built, partnerships are formed and lifelong friendships begin.

Rooted in professionalism: A call to action

As we evolve, so too must we deepen our professional identity Being accredited and belonging to a recognised professional body is no longer optional, but essential. We therefore encourage every insurance practitioner –whether you’re an underwriter, broker, claims specialist, reinsurer, risk manager or executive –to activate or renew your professional membership.

But what does it truly mean to be a professional member of the IISA?

It means:

• Committing to lifelong learning and maintaining current, relevant skills in a fastchanging industry

• Upholding ethical and professional standards, aligned with global best practices.

• Demonstrating credibility and integrity in the eyes of employers, regulators and clients.

• Being recognised for your qualifications and experience, through structured designations (Licentiate,Associate,Fellow).

• A c c e s s i n g a p o w e r f u l n e t w o r k o f professionals,mentors and thought leaders.

Professional membership is not a box to tick; it is a badge of honour It represents your commitment to excellence, integrity and growth. The IISA is your professional home, and we are here to walk with you, support you and celebrate your progress at every stage of your journey

Let the baobab remind us

As we gather beneath the symbolic branches of the baobab, may we be reminded:

“Wisdom is like a baobab tree: no one person can embrace it alone.” – African proverb

So let us learn from one another, grow with one another and build something greater together

As we journey through AIE2025, let the baobab guide our thinking – rooted in experience, branching into innovation and bearing fruit for generations to come. May this conference inspire courageous conversations, foster bold ideas and renew our collective energy for a purpose-driven profession.

As you return home after this conference, I hope you carry more than just new knowledge. I hope you carry a renewed sense of purpose, pride and belonging. And when AIE2026 comes around, I hope to see you again!

Over the last couple of years, there has been a significant increase in both the frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters, creating both a physical and socioeconomic divide in terms of risk exposure and protection. At a global level, insurance premiums for physical risks and natural catastrophe protection are set to increase by 50% by 2030, reaching $200250 billion.

While South Africa has traditionally been viewed as a relatively low-risk environment for natural disasters, this is no longer the case. In the Western Cape alone, floods cost Santam R403 million, while the Gauteng hailstorm added R180 million. Fire claims reached R422 million, marking a nearly 9% increase from 2022.

During the first half of 2024, Santam covered R607 million in weather-related claims for policyholders, compared to R150 million in 2023 The growing frequency of these events will inevitably become more expensive for insurers and create affordability challenges for households and businesses in the future.

Simultaneously, this trend exacerbates the protection gap, disproportionately affecting low-income communities. The protection gap – the difference between economic losses and insured losses – is a global issue that heavily impacts emerging economies and poorer populations, where most losses remain uninsured.

In the EMEA region, which South Africa is part off, the p

macroeconomic factors such as low economic growth, rising unemployment and the cost-of-living crisis.

Each unprotected asset represents a potential setback, impacting not only individuals but entire communities by diminishing their capacity to recover from catastrophic events. It is up to us, as insurers, to educate both clients and intermediaries to understand the changing nature of risks and weather patterns, and their impact on the value chain.

The evolution of climate risk is clear in the regulatory landscape as well, with mandates for climate-related disclosures, such as the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation. Progressive climate regulation and stakeholder pressures have also acted as a driving force in encouraging action towards climate change. To comply with these standards, insurers are challenged to improve the quality of their data, embed climate risk assessments into underwriting, and support green business models.

For insurers, data-driven innovation is key to creating solutions that match the pace of climate change. Using advanced technologies like predictive analytics, geocoding, and scenario analysis allows better understanding of risks and set premiums that reflect the shifting landscape However, the demand for resilience requires a proactive approach to partner with communities and stakeholders.

Santam’s Partnership for Risk and Resilience (P4RR) programme reflects this commitment. By working with local municipalities and research bodies like the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), we aim to support the development of climate adaptation plans in vulnerable communities.

Ultimately, the role of insurance in the changing climate is to provide financial protection and resilience against increasingly frequent and severe weather-related losses, helping individuals, businesses, and communities recover and adapt. By focusing on partnerships, innovation, and accessible solutions, we at Santam aim to support sustainable growth and bridge the protection gap across the communities we serve.

Multinational companies inherently operate across jurisdictions with widely varying regulations, market practices and socioeconomic conditions. In navigating Africa’s insurance landscape, companies face a complex web of regulatory requirements, currency volatility, and fragmented market conditions that can expose them to substantial financial and reputational risks.

Aon's recently released ‘2025 Africa State of the Insurance Market’ report identifies critical trends reshaping this landscape. Political violence and terrorism risks persist due to ethnic divisions and socioeconomic pressures, while currency fluctuations create complications for USD-denominated multinational insurance programs operating in local currency environments Meanwhile, diverse regulatory frameworks across African territories require country-specific approaches to ensure compliance, effective coverage and speedy claims settlement.

Aon’s Global Client Network (AGCN) equips clients to streamline their global insurance programs to avoid gaps in coverage whilst adhering to each country’s regulatory frameworks. Decision makers need full visibility into local insurance placements to identify and close any coverage gaps, thereby optimising the Total Cost of Risk (TCOR). One such tool which assists our multinational clients is Aon’s Global Account Management System that allows clients to readily access insurance details for each territory they have a presence in.

Whether your firm is expanding internationally for the first time, a multinational firm working to optimise risk management strategies, or a global firm in need of help navigating the changing international insurance regulatory environment, Aon is your best partner

The Aon Global Client Network is unlike any other in the industry Embedded within our local offices but working as a global team under common leadership and established rules of engagement, AGCN partners with you to deliver the resources, data, insights and professional advice to drive better decisions around all aspects of your multinational insurance program.

The insurance industry is transforming, driven by investment in human capital and the power of generative AI. At Old Mutual Insure, we believe the future lies in combining technology with human potential to create a more inclusive and efficient industry

Through our Black Youth Broker Development Programme, we’re tackling South Africa’s 60% youth unemployment rate by training 80 black graduates to become qualified brokers. Funded by INSETA and the Broker Development Trust, this 12month initiative equips participants with essential skills and real-world experience. By July 2025, 50 graduates from the first intake will have permanent roles, with another 30 set to follow Notably, over 70% of participants are women—helping diversify the industry

This programme is part of a broader strategy to build a team of 300 face-to-face brokers by the end of 2025, with a focus on supporting SMMEs and closing the sales skills gap.

Simultaneously, we’re leveraging generative AI to enhance operations—from faster quote generation and improved risk profiling to usage-based insurance via WhatsApp. AI also supports financial inclusion by helping us design affordable, personalised policies for underserved communities and detect fraud more effectively

However, we recognise the importance of balancing innovation with human oversight Our change management strategy ensures AI adoption is aligned with staff development, led by dedicated “change champions” across product lines. By empowering people and embracing technology, Old Mutual Insure is building a future-fit, inclusive, and resilient insurance industry ready to meet tomorrow’s challenges, today

Moral hazard impacts both insurers and consumers, and in today’s competitive, costsensitive market, insurers need smarter ways to address it beyond just excesses and exclusions.

What is moral hazard?

Moral hazard happens when individuals or businesses take greater risks because they know their insurer will cover the fallout. This concept dates back over 350 years, when early insurers noticed that policyholders began acting more recklessly postinsurance As law professor Cassandra Jones Havard puts it, moral hazard is “financial recklessness”

Why does it matter?

Unchecked, moral hazard drives up claim costs, which in turn raises premiums for everyone Common examples include

skipping car maintenance, leaving valuables in plain sight, or parking in high-risk areas. This behaviour undermines efforts to keep premiums affordable, which is a growing challenge in the face of rising living costs.

How is it usually managed?

Excesses are the most common tool, requiring clients to shoulder part of the cost. But with flexible policies allowing clients to reduce excesses for higher premiums, this method has limitations. Other methods, like using demographics or credit scores, attempt to predict risk but often fall short.

Enter telematics

Telematics technology changes the game. By having a view of real-time driving behaviour, insurers can better understand the change in risk that occurs due to moral hazard, and can guide clients towards better driving behaviours or reprice policies according to this change in risk.

A shared-value model

Telematics supports a shared-value approach: safer drivers benefit from better rewards, insurers reduce risk, and roads become safer Discovery Insure’s Vitality Drive programme is a clear example of this, rewarding safe drivers with perks such as fuel rewards and lower premium increases. This encourages conscious, responsible driving, directly countering moral hazard.

On 19–20 March 2025, INSETA hosted the Insurance Skills Indaba (ISI2025) at GallagherConvention Centre, Johannesburg, under the theme: “A Responsive Disruption Through Skills Innovation.” Mr Panyaza Lesufi, Premier of Gauteng, delivered the keynote address on day 1.
