Vermont is a special place, known for its unbeatable quality of life, pristine environment, and stunning landscapes, and continues to be a nationwide leader in addressing complex issues. Vermonters are committed to preserving and sharing the land they live, work, and play on.
A strong sense of community, deeply rooted values, and unparalleled opportunities for personal and professional growth make living in Vermont incredibly desirable.
Vermont’s commitment to inclusivity, the environment, arts and culture, business entrepreneurship, and the local food system are evident in the innovations found in every corner of the state. Read on to find out why Vermonters love where they live.
What brought you to Vermont?
My journey to Vermont began in November 2004, when my family was resettled here from Rwanda after spending several years in the Republic of Congo. The Vermont community embraced us with open arms, supporting our transition as we learned English and pursued our education.
Little did I know that Vermont would become even more significant in my life when I met my wife, a New Hampshire native and St. Michael’s College alumna, while I was studying at Champlain College in 2009. She was working in Student Life at the college, and our paths crossed in a way that would change both our lives forever.
Our journey together has taken us through diverse landscapes, and we’ve been blessed with three beautiful boys. By early 2022, we found ourselves at a crossroads, seeking two essential elements for our next chapter: proximity to family and friends and a stable community to raise our children.
As we explored various New England locations, Vermont kept calling us back. It was more than just familiar territory - it was where our story began, where we both received our education, where two of our sons were born, and where we maintained deep connections with family and friends who had become family. The state’s commitment to outdoor living and its unparalleled natural beauty only reinforced what we already knew in our hearts: Vermont wasn’t just a place we’d lived before - it was where we needed to make our permanent home.

The vibrant community, year-round outdoor adventures, excellent schools, and abundant opportunities for our children make Vermont exceptional. As the financial controller at the Community College of Vermont and a board member of the Vermont Futures Project, I have the privilege of helping to shape Vermont’s economic future. We feel fortunate to have found our home in Colchester, just minutes from the scenic shores of Lake Champlain and the beloved bike path. Our neighborhood has blessed us with incredible neighbors who have become dear friends.
What makes Vermont truly special is the way our past and present naturally intertwine. Whether we’re grocery shopping or enjoying local events, we frequently encounter familiar faces from our pre-parenthood days in Vermont. These chance meetings evolve into warm conversations, sharing life stories and the different paths that led us all back to this remarkable state.
Vermont isn’t just a place we live - it’s a community we cherish, and we’re deeply grateful to raise our children in this extraordinary setting. Watching them grow up here, surrounded by natural beauty and genuine community connections, confirms that coming home to Vermont was one of our best decisions.

The nation’s smallest capital city, Montpelier, anchors a region where family farms and wooded uplands rub shoulders with urban environments built to human scale. The towns, villages, and two busy cities that flank the Winooski River Valley have long been hubs of industry and government. The citizen legislature that convenes in Montpelier is Vermont’s bedrock of democracy, while less than 10 miles away, rock itself is the treasure of Barre, the “Granite Capital of the World.” Nearby, the little town of Cabot lends its name to cheese enjoyed across the nation and beyond.
Montpelier is the smallest state capital by population and is home to one of the oldest capitol buildings in the U.S. Known as the City of Bridges, seven bridges are artfully illuminated throughout this town, adding light to Montpelier’s bustling restaurant and theater scene.
At more than 100 miles, historic Route 12 has connected Montpelier to the White River Valley and the Upper Green Mountains since the early 19th century. Drive it long enough north and you’ll pass by Lake Elmore, known among locals as “Vermont’s Beauty Spot.” Head south through Roxbury and veer west to travel over Roxbury Mountain Road.
Self-Guided Tour of the Vermont State House, Montpelier
An architectural treasure offering visitors a glimpse into history inside the State House’s beautifully preserved chambers, original interiors, and significant art collections.
Millstone Trails, Barre
Explore 1,500 acres of multi-use, year-round trails among historic quarries. Mountain bike by scenic vistas, snowshoe through regenerating forests, or play 18 holes of disc golf, all within one trail network ideal for outdoor adventure.
Located on the banks of the Winooski River, Camp Meade is an intersection of local food, artisans, and community. From summer concerts on the Village Green to freshly baked pastries at Red Hen Baking Co., Camp Meade offers many opportunities to immerse yourself into this whimsical gathering hub.

Leave mainland Vermont by bridge or causeway—or even by bicycle ferry—and discover the scenic realm of the Champlain Islands, some 80 square miles of land that divide the northern waters of Lake Champlain. This narrow swath of farms and meadowland reaches from just beyond the Burlington suburbs to the Canadian border. Set apart by geography and their own unique sense of time and place, the Champlain Islands are truly a world of their own.
The Chazy Fossil Reef, a U.S. National Natural Landmark, is recognized as the oldest known diverse fossil reef. The 1,567acre site offers visitors a chance to explore the ancient past, with trilobite and nautilus fossils dating back to around 460 million years ago.
The Lake Champlain Byway follows the northern length of Lake Champlain for 184 miles, connecting the Champlain Islands from the Canadian border to Greater Burlington and the Champlain Valley. Discover island life along this scenic waterfront drive.
Island Arts, North Hero
A big red century-old barn in North Hero serves as the headquarters for Island Arts, a dynamic blend of art, music, and community events. From late spring to early fall, visit for author talks, barn dances, nights filled with music and poetry, theater productions, and more.
Camp on an Island, Woods Island State Parks
Escape to Knight or Woods Island state parks for a true outdoor adventure. Each island measures only a mile in length and is only accessible by boat. Many campers paddle over, though a private water taxi is available.
Champlain Islands Farmers Market, South Hero
This island tradition brings together local farms, specialty food businesses, and artisan studios, offering fresh produce, meats, baked goods, and handmade crafts. Held Wednesdays through mid-September in South Hero, and Saturdays in Grand Island through late October.

A broad expanse of gently rolling land dotted with dairy farms and orchards, the Champlain Valley spreads from the central Green Mountains to Lake Champlain. In the west, winding roads climb a trio of mountain passes— the Appalachian, Lincoln, and Middlebury gaps—and descend into foothill villages. In the east, shoreline towns Ferrisburgh and Shoreham represent the Champlain Valley’s “lake life” vibe. In the middle? One of the top liberal arts colleges in the country, Middlebury College, as well as all the lively dining, shopping, and events that come along with the region.
Vergennes is a small city that packs a lot of interest into just two square miles, with a charming downtown full of historic architecture and riverside views. It was also Vermont’s first incorporated city and just the third in the developing nation in 1788.
At 184 miles, the Lake Champlain Byway connects the Champlain Valley to Greater Burlington and the Champlain Islands, as well as Canada and New York. On this beautiful waterfront drive, find plenty of places to stop, from state parks to museums and farmstands.
Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area, Addison
More than 200 species of feathered friends, both resident and migratory, have been sighted here. This state-owned mix of wetlands, grasslands, and woods spans nearly 3,000 acres.
Rokeby Museum, Ferrisburgh
This National Historic Landmark is set on 90 rural acres and anchored by a nearly 250-year-old farmhouse. In addition to the museum education center and the Robinson home, there are nine preserved outbuildings and hiking trails to explore. Open from May to October; trails open year-round.
Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Vergennes
The history, ecology, and archaeology of Lake Champlain can be experienced both on and off land, offering expeditions to shipwreck sites, diving experiences, and small-group rowing tours. On land, explore three acres of exhibits, including an 18th-century blacksmith forge and a replica of Benedict Arnold’s 1776 gunboat.

Midway between southern Vermont’s biggest towns, Brattleboro and Bennington, lies an oasis of woods and waters fringed by the Green Mountain National Forest. This is the Deerfield Valley, and for many visitors— especially skiers eager to reach the state’s first big southern mountain, Mount Snow—it’s the place where the feeling of “true Vermont” first sinks in. Two-lane roads wind up and around a thickly forested landscape, past rushing rivers and placid lakes, and dip into historic villages. The Deerfield Valley’s beauty is easy to see. Spend some time here and you’ll also feel a rising energy in this region, with the blossoming of new restaurants, breweries, and hotels.
Somerset Reservoir is the largest “wild” lake in Vermont. Part of the Green Mountain National Forest, its completely undeveloped shoreline offers many remote areas for kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and paddleboarding among the scenic views.
At 48 miles, the scenic Molly Stark Byway is named after the wife of General John Stark, who led the Colonial Militia to a victory at the Battle of Bennington. Stop at Hogback Mountain for the famous three-state-view overlook, offering 100-mile vistas.

From the north, a trip through Vermont’s Lower Connecticut River Valley region is an adventure that leaps from past to present. It begins in Windsor, where, on a stormy night in 1777, the Republic of Vermont was officially born. Continuing south, the echoes of the Industrial Revolution can be heard in Springfield, once a capital of 19th-century machine manufacturing, and the former mill town of Bellows Falls. By the time you reach Brattleboro, in the region’s southern tip, the tempo changes. Closely linked with the 20th century’s countercultural revolution, Brattleboro stands today as an artsy, eclectic, forward-looking destination. It’s the ideal city for a Vermont region that pairs modern energy with a timeless attraction: the beautiful river valley that it calls home.
Brattleboro is home to Harris Hill Ski Jump, New England’s only Olympic-sized ski jumping hill. Every February for more than 100 years, locals and visitors have gathered to witness jumpers aiming to break the 341-foot hill record, soaring at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.
Covering 410 miles along the length of Vermont from north to south is the Connecticut River Byway, the state’s only designated national byway. With the Green Mountain National Forest and the Appalachian Trail 20 minutes west at most points, there’s lots of opportunities to stretch your legs along the way. Following the scenic Connecticut River between Vermont and New Hampshire showcases the history of commerce in the adjacent historic downtowns.
Artisans Park and Sculpture Garden, Windsor
This vibrant hub brings together eight top-tier restaurants and shops to create a place to savor local flavors, connect with nature, and explore creativity. Visitors can book a laidback float down the Connecticut River or buy admission to wander the adjacent 14-acre Path of Life Garden and examine a human life and its meaning among more than a dozen sculptures.
Retreat Farm, Brattleboro
Nestled on 500 acres of conserved land, this communityfocused destination brings people together to celebrate the deep connection between humanity and the earth. Offering free admission, families can delight in the forest playground, pastures of farm animals, a 10-mile-plus trail network, and weekly events.
Stone Church, Brattleboro
This beautifully restored 1875 Victorian Gothic church is now home to a live music venue that rocks year-round with performances including intimate folk and raucous metal. The building’s stained-glass windows and pipe organ are part of its unique backdrop for touring bands and local talent.

Featuring a dog chapel and art gallery at the home and studio of renowned artist Stephen Huneck, this 150-acre mountaintop sanctuary is a park for pups and their people. Leash-free dogs can wander hiking trails, splash in the ponds, and romp through wildflower meadows.
The Great Vermont Corn Maze, Danville Set on 24 acres, this corn maze is New England's largest. With an underground tunnel and 100 bridges throughout the maze, barnyard golf, and friendly goats, Danville’s Great Vermont Corn Maze is big enough to plan your day around.

Rolling hills and dairy farms define much of Vermont’s northwest corner, a sparsely settled land of open vistas that hugs the Canadian border. Spreading west toward Lake Champlain, it reaches from the Green Mountain foothills to the streets of a vibrant small city, St. Albans. On one side of Northwest Vermont, you’ll find a treasure trove of historic covered bridges; on the other side, pristine waters and wetlands where herons hunt and sturgeon spawn. Winding through pastures and villages in between is the Missisquoi River, which ends at Lake Champlain in a lovely bay that belongs to both Vermont and Quebec.
Montgomery has the most covered bridges in the state, with five within its borders and a sixth nearby in Enosburgh, some dating back to the 1800s. Historically, covered bridges were known as “kissing bridges,” affording courting lovers a few moments of privacy as they walked or rode through.
Famous for its winding roads through Smugglers Notch in the Upper Green Mountains, Route 108 continues through Northwest Vermont, taking travelers to the Canadian border. Along Route 108, pass over the Missisiquoi River, stop for a hike or a picnic, or spend the day at Lake Carmi.
Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail, St. Albans
Stretching 26.4 miles, this multi-use, accessible trail links the Canadian border town of Richford with the city of St. Albans. Today, cyclists and hikers can follow the historic path once traveled by the New England Central Rail Line.
Cold Hollow Sculpture Park, Enosburgh Falls
This former 200-acre dairy farm has been transformed into a "living park" of 70-plus massive iron, stone, and steel sculptures. Stroll the artworks tucked into the rolling landscape or visit for the workshops and performances hosted on the property throughout the summer.
Burton Island State Park, Burton Island
Accessible only by boat, this 253-acre island in Lake Champlain offers a serene escape with a marina, hiking trails, and a lunch counter. Surrounded by a rich agricultural and historical past, cabins and campsites are available on the island for overnight stays.

Visitors find it easy to get their bearings in the Okemo Valley, a small and tightly knit region in the Green Mountain foothills of south-central Vermont. Many make their first explorations here along the Scenic Route 100 Byway, which winds through the valley on its 146-mile journey through some of Vermont’s prettiest landscapes. Others get a bird’s-eye overview from more than 3,000 feet atop the mountain that stands in the heart of the region and shares its name, Okemo, which is said to be from an Indigenous language meaning “All Come Home.”
Calvin Coolidge, the U.S.’s 30th president, was born in Plymouth Notch. He was also the only president to be born on Independence Day. See the family’s homestead at the Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site, which preserves his birthplace and childhood home. Nearby, sample award-winning Plymouth Cheese, made on-site.
Also known as “Vermont’s Main Street” and “The Skier’s Highway,” Route 100 takes travelers 146 miles through the Green Mountains and small villages. Stop at Ludlow Overlook when traversing Mountain Road near Okemo Mountain Resort for panoramic views of the surrounding forest.

Set like a gem between the prongs of the Taconic and Green Mountain ranges, The Shires of southwestern Vermont feels like two destinations in one. Sharing borders with both New York and Massachusetts makes this region an energetic crossroads of history, commerce, and culture. It’s no surprise that southern Vermont’s largest town, Bennington, is found here. The Shires are a tranquil retreat defined by natural beauty and small-town ease, a combination that has long captivated visitors, including the family of one of America’s greatest presidents.
Bennington Battle Monument, the tallest man-made structure in Vermont, commemorates the 1777 Battle of Bennington during the American Revolution. The 306-foot monument offers panoramic views of the valleys and rolling hills of Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts.
The Shires of Vermont Byway connects 15 Vermont towns and villages by the 33-mile scenic ribbon of highway known as Historic Route 7A. Surrounded by mountains and enriched by the waters of the famous Battenkill River that runs through the valley, beautiful views abound.

Much like the prized marble and slate dug from its soil over the decades, the Stone Valley is a treasure lying below the surface. It lies at the narrow, quieter southern end of Lake Champlain, and sits on the outskirts of the lofty northern Green Mountains. With its off-the-beaten-track location, the Stone Valley is as much a discovery as a destination. However, one doesn’t have to dig deep into this pocket of southwestern Vermont to uncover its appeal.
Lake Bomoseen is the largest lake entirely in Vermont at 2,400 acres. Bomoseen State Park offers visitors day access to the lake, along with plenty to discover on hiking trails, from abandoned quarries to colorful rock piles. Rent a pontoon or speedboat for the day and cruise over to the Lake House Pub and Grille, offering lunch and dinner by boat access.
Many of Vermont’s southern communities are set in stone The 30-mile Stone Valley Byway celebrates that history, leading to acclaimed theater at the Dorset Playhouse, a Revolutionary War battlefield historic site, and the museums operated by the Poultney Historical Society.

Flowing down from the Northeast Kingdom, the Connecticut River curls into an oxbow at the village of Newbury, then descends through farms, forest, and towns that first sprang up when this river “highway” was born. These settlements in the Upper Connecticut River Valley region would be home to an important inventor and a visionary congressman, early conservationists now celebrated in Vermont’s only national park, and tinkerers who tried a new way to get up a hill and launched the state’s ski industry.
Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, the only national park in Vermont, offers over 25 miles of trails through the nation’s oldest scientifically managed forest. Explore the history of conservation, hike scenic carriage roads, picnic in historic gardens, and engage with art and ideas through seasonal ranger programs.
Covering 410 miles along the length of Vermont from north to south is the Connecticut River Byway, the state’s only designated national byway. Along this historic route, visit one of the country’s oldest baking schools with an on-site restaurant and the longest twolane covered bridge in the U.S. Following the scenic Connecticut River between Vermont and New Hampshire showcases the history of commerce in the adjacent historic downtowns.
Quechee Gorge, Quechee
Often referred to as Vermont's "Little Grand Canyon," Vermont’s deepest gorge plunges 165 feet down. Visitors can view the schist and quartzite walls of the gorge from the bridge above or stroll a mile-long walking trail down to the Ottauquechee River.
Forest Canopy Walk/VINS, Quechee
The ADA-accessible Forest Canopy Walk offers an elevated view of the landscape and a chance to spot tree-dwelling wildlife. Visitors may climb the tower to view the Ottauquechee River from 100 feet above. On the rest of the 47-acre campus, see rehabilitated wild birds, visit the dinosaur exhibit, and watch a live bird program.

Skyscraping icons of Vermont, the Upper Green Mountains are a majestic march of peaks that span from remote Belvidere Mountain in the north to the ski-trail-laced slopes farther south. Broken only by the Lamoille and Winooski river valleys and the winding pass of Smugglers’ Notch and the Appalachian Gap, these mountains represent the state’s most rugged terrain—and its most inviting landscape for challenging outdoor recreation. Skiing’s history in this region dates back 90 years to when Civilian Conservation Corps teams cut the first trails on the state’s highest peak, Mount Mansfield.
Mount Mansfield is the highest peak in Vermont at 4,393 feet. Located in Stowe, this popular hiking, skiing, and riding destination offers scenic vistas and 360-degree views from the top of the Green Mountains. Driving up the auto toll road and taking a scenic gondola ride to the top are both great ways to see the views.
Vermont’s scenic Mad River Byway is known for its beautiful rural landscape, covered bridges, and historic villages. This 36mile byway provides sweeping views of the Green Mountains and the valley’s farmlands and provides access to skiing, local arts, and artisanal foods.
The Current, Stowe
The Current focuses on presenting contemporary art by creators from wideranging backgrounds in a welcoming, inclusive community space. In addition to year-round visual art exhibitions, it hosts an annual townwide outdoor sculpture show and an engaging lineup of public programs and workshops.
Icelandic Horse Farm, Fayston
Explore Vermont’s Mad River Valley on horseback, riding one of the world's oldest breeds. Built for snow, Icelandic horses are small but strong, with shaggy winter coats, and known for their effortless movement across mountains, meadows, and forests.
Zenbarn, Waterbury
This converted dairy barn rocks with funk, jazz, and live tribute bands, along with comedy, karaoke nights, and community events. Hearty pub food and locally made cocktails, including some with CBD, round out the menu.

Tumbling eastward out of the Green Mountains, the river that defines this compact corner of central Vermont was known to the native Abenaki as “Wôbatekw,” or “clear stream.” Renamed by European settlers as the White River, it is still prized for its purity by those who fish and swim in its waters today. Passing under covered bridges and through towns and forests, the White River is a shining thread in this region’s diverse tapestry of attractions. From a “world’s fair” hosted by a town of only 1,300 people to a bridge that floats, a visit to the White River Valley can hold as many delightful twists and turns as the river itself.
Brookfield features Vermont’s only floating bridge, which spans Sunset Lake. The bridge was originally built in 1820 and reconstructed over the years. The bridge is made of pontoons, allowing it to float elegantly on the lake’s surface. In the winter, it’s home to a historic ice harvest festival.
Vermont’s Route 110 winds through the picturesque White River Valley, connecting the historic towns of Tunbridge and Chelsea. This historic route follows the First Branch White River and showcases iconic covered bridges, charming village centers, and rolling countryside.
Randolph Playhouse Movie Theater, Randolph Vermont’s first theater that was specially built for movies is still going strong, showing firstrun films on a single screen. Drinks and classic movie candy are available at oldfashioned prices, and the popcorn is flavored with real butter.
Tunbridge World’s Fair, Tunbridge
A long-standing Vermont late-summer country tradition, running since 1867, features a lively mix of racing pigs, cattle pulls, and musical performances. Jump on a midway ride, grab some fair food, and settle in to celebrate the season.
Chandler Center for the Arts, Randolph Known as one of the most acoustically impressive performance venues in the Northeast, it hosts local and internationally known musicians on its main stage, along with community theater and family shows, standup comedy, and more. Set in the same building, its companion art gallery hosts more than half a dozen exhibits annually.

VERMONT IS HOME TO 100 COVERED BRIDGES dating from 1820. One Northwest Vermont town is even home to five of them. The Official Vermont Road Map & Guide to Vermont Attractions points visitors to covered bridges and has a wealth of other resources, too. VERMONT’S HISTORIC COVERED BRIDGES have unique height and weight restrictions to preserve their structure and ensure safety. Many of these bridges have vertical clearatnces between 8 and 12 feet and are posted for load capacities ranging from 3,000 to 8,000 lbs. Larger vehicles and motor homes are advised to avoid crossing covered bridges and to use alternate routes.
LONG BEFORE VERMONT’S MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS took their present shape, the region lay beneath the saltwater Champlain Sea, which later became Lake Champlain. Formed as glaciers retreated after the last Ice Age, this water flowed into the Atlantic Ocean, leaving behind marine fossils embedded in Vermont’s landscape. Today, visitors can explore Vermont’s stunningly diverse terrain, from rushing mountain waterfalls to trails wrapping around rugged peaks.

Many trails in Vermont weave through both public and private lands. The state has a strong tradition of private property owners allowing access to their land for trail use, which is an important part of outdoor recreation in Vermont. Staying on designated trails helps maintain and grow Vermont’s trail systems and protects fragile ecosystems. Ensure you’re following a marked trail and be aware of private property and posted signage.
