The County of Vermilion River (CVR) hosted Wetland Adventure Days at Lindsay Evans Park on August 28, and Hazeldine Campground on August 29. Families had fun exploring and learning about the different plant and animal species around them, followed by hotdogs and refreshments.

“Wetland and riparian areas are important for a variety of reasons; aside from providing a habitat, they provide water

management in the countryside by holding water and releasing it into creeks or groundwater mitigating floods. From the agricultural side, we want to show the value of wetlands, and that they are not just a waste of space in the cropland,” said CVR Agriculture Director. “People often go to the beach but it’s an environment that people don’t always know a lot about. The vegetation can include bullrushes, cattails, different grasses, and emergent plants that grow out into the lake providing habitats for inver-

tebrates and pull nutrients out of the water; especially the nitrogen.”

Sea gulls, sandpipers and barn swallows visited the beach, and she noted that ducks, geese, insects, smaller rodents, deer, coyotes, and even a black bear have been in and out of the day use area recently.

Using dipping nets and magnifying glasses, children identified water bugs, and had the opportunity to play several educational games. Activity bags included a scavenger hunt and take-home colouring

pages.

ALUS Coordinator, Chris Elder, noted that the interactive stations allowed families to touch and learn, answering trivia while playing Plinko, etc. The casual atmosphere gave them a chance to play in the water and get dirty.

“It’s very convenient having somewhere so close to home with little kids. We would have never come or known Lindsay Evans Park was here if it wasn’t for this event,” said Lucynda Sellen.

Productive Quilters Retreat Fosters Creativity And Camaraderie At Red Feather Ridge

In a celebration of craftsmanship and community, the esteemed event facility Red Feather Ridge played host to an inspiring quilters retreat from August 24 to August 27. Quilting enthusiasts from Barrhead, Gibbons, Dewberry, Marwayne, and the Mannville Vermilion community gathered for this four-day event, intertwining fellowship, creativity, and the love of quilting.

The retreat welcomed both seasoned and budding quilters, each embracing the opportunity to either embark on fresh projects or to put the final stitches on quilts

that had been in the works for years. The sounds of sewing machines blended with laughter and conversation, setting the tone for a fulfilling gathering.

Cheryl Livingstone, a quilter herself and the proud owner of Red Feather Ridge, shared her admiration for the devotion shown by the “diehard quilters” who quilted tirelessly well into the late evening hours.

Adding a delightful twist to the event, Shauna Charron, the owner of Village Treasures Quilt Shop in Mannville, set up an enticing pop-up shop on Friday and Saturday. Attendees were treated to the allure of mystery packages containing just

the right amount of fabric to craft a threeyard quilt. Lyn Yaremchuk, the president of the Vermilion Quilters Guild, extended a creative challenge to her fellow guild members: to utilize the surprise fabrics and craft donation quilts. The response was heartwarming, as several guild members considered accepting the challenge.

As the retreat unfolded, it wasn’t all about needles and threads. Attendees were entertained by the talents of singer-songwriter Makenna Gallagher, granddaughter of quilter Alice Swan as she performed some of her favourites as well as those requested by her Gramma, and she also

told stories.

A door prize from Nuts for Bolts added an extra thrill to the event. And to ensure that creativities were nourished, Red Feather Ridge provided breakfast, lunch, and supper, keeping the quilters fueled and ready to bring their visions to life.

Cheryl’s husband Doug, co-owner of the facility, helped with the arrangement of lighting to aiding with cleanup, and it did not go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated. Reflecting on the event’s success, Livingstone expressed her joy, “We had a lot of fun and had the opportunity to make new friends.”

Today, I am baking with a flour made of Park wheat. It is freshly ground, whole grain, organic and unbleached. The Park variety of wheat is from the classification of Canadian Northern Hard Red. Park is a heritage variety that made its debut in 1963. I was very curious to see how it performed in baking, and how it tasted. I used it for this muffin recipe. It makes hearty muffins that allow all the banana flavour to come through. Even though the flour is a whole grain, there was no bitterness at all. I also made pancakes using the whole grain Park wheat flour, and they turned out amazing, the pancakes were fluffy, and

mild in flavor. For sure they are a winner. I will be continuing to bake and experiment with this flour, and hopefully soon, it will be available for purchase. There is an enterprising lady, that is grinding organic heritage wheat from the seeds into fresh flour and will be making a business out of it. I love the idea of being able to bake with heritage wheat. These muffins are great for your harvest crew, or for back to school lunches.

The great thing about doing your own baking is that you are in charge of all the ingredients. You don’t have food additives, artificial flavours, industrial highly processed oils, or a whole long list of food preservatives. Just real food that our bodies recognize and know what to do with. Unfortunately, highly processed vegetable oils are used in industrial commercial baking. While the term “vege-

table” sounds healthy, they are hard on our bodies, causing inflammation which in turn leads to disease. Leading nutritional experts in fats and oils recommend butter, gee, lard, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil for our bodies for optimal health. We also benefit from foods high in omega 3 oils. Poly unsaturated vegetable oils are omega 6 oils and have a half-life of about 600 days or more to break down in our bodies. Poly unsaturated fats are unstable in the body and are prone to lipid (fat) peroxidation producing damaging free radicals. Canola oil and peanut oil are mostly monosaturated, however, they are high in omega 6, so they should be consumed in moderation. Olive oil and nuts are part of the healthy monosaturated fats found in the Mediterranean diet. Saturated fats like butter, coconut oil, and lard, are very stable and are not

prone to oxidation in the body or to cause inflammation, in fact, 50% of our cell membranes are made up of saturated fat.

First, the Vermilion Creamery, owned by P. Burns and Company, was filling an order for five carloads of butter that was going to the Vancouver Creamery Company. Four cars had already left, and the final car was going to be shipped out within a week.

The annual school fair was announced, with the date set as Sept. 17. A total of 19 schools had entered and a lot of interest was being shown in the event. The events included garden products, flowers, grains, livestock, elementary science, sewing, penmanship, geography and more.

F.S. Wright, the editor of Good Roads magazine, spent a couple of days in town in the interest of the Auto and Good Roads Association. He inspected the proposed tourist camping grounds at the golf course and felt it was an ideal location.

Also in town was L.A. Wilde, who represented the Overseas Settlement Board and National Council of the YMCA of great Britain. He was joined by H.A. Craig, the deputy minister of Agriculture, who were interested in a scheme to bring 150 men to Canada to undergo farming training in Vermilion. Speaking to a group at the Veterans’ Club, Craig stated that he had a favourable impression of the area during his visit.

H.E. Spencer and William Irvine, both southern Alberta Members of Parliament, were in the area to address a public meeting.

A bit of unfortunate news was that Sir

Henry Thornton sent a wire to the community stating there was a change in itinerary and he would not be coming to the community. A celebration was cancelled as a result.

As for good news, William Steele was able to finish putting up a horse stable and garage on his property after he lost both in a fire in the spring.

Lastly, the Vermilion golf club was successful in defending the McWilliamsDawson Cup against a team from Elk Point. The locals won by 26 strokes to retain the championship.

Prostate Cancer Awareness: The MAN VAN Returns To Vermilion On September 9

Reporter

Did you know that prostate cancer affects 1 in 6 men in Alberta during their lifetime? This silent adversary often lurks without early symptoms, making early detection crucial. While some men with prostate cancer lack elevated risk factors, it’s essential to understand the factors that do increase the risk. As we delve into this important topic, we find that age, family history, diet, and ethnicity play pivotal roles.

Prostate cancer risk escalates with age, emphasizing the need for vigilance as men grow older. If there’s a family history of prostate cancer, the risk amplifies, particularly based on the relationship to a relative with the disease. Fathers should encourage

Vermilion and St. Paul would like to remind drivers that the traffic safety focus for the month of September is Back to School.

There will be more traffic on the roads and sidewalks this September as children return to school after the summer holidays. Drivers should be extra cautious, especially when driving in school and playground zones. These areas can get congested in the morning and mid-afternoon, with children walking, biking, being dropped off or picked up by parents, or getting off and on school buses. Slow down and stay alert to help keep children safe on our roads.

their sons above 40 to undergo regular checks. A high-fat diet also raises the risk. While Black males face a higher risk compared to Caucasians and Asians, it’s important to note that this disease can impact any male.

Symptoms of prostate cancer may involve issues with bleeding during urination or the inability to urinate due to cancer’s encroachment in the prostate region. While these symptoms can sometimes stem from benign prostate enlargement, they must not be disregarded and require thorough investigation. Advanced prostate cancer typically infiltrates the bones, frequently causing lower back and pelvic bone pain.

A simple yet effective way to monitor prostate health is through a Prostate

Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test. PSA is a protein predominantly found in semen but can also be detected in the blood. This test assesses PSA levels, enabling physicians to determine if further investigation is necessary. Early detection of prostate cancer significantly improves treatment outcomes.

The Prostate Cancer Centre is committed to raising awareness about the significance of early detection and is thrilled to announce the return of the MAN VAN. The MAN VAN is a mobile men’s health clinic exclusively offering free PSA blood testing for men aged 40-80 across Alberta.

On Saturday, September 9, the MAN VAN will be stationed in Vermilion from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Vermilion Heritage Park (5320 50 Avenue). Men

Grandparents Day Grandchildren welcome anytime A day to connect with grandparents and boost their health and well being!!!!

Celebrating Grandparents’ Day

As the days of summer start to wane and the hues of autumn begin to paint the landscape, Canadians prepare to celebrate an often-overlooked but incredibly significant occasion – Grandparents’ Day. This day, observed on the second Sunday of September in Canada, provides an opportunity for all generations to come together, reflect on the importance of familial bonds, and pay tribute to the wisdom and love that grandparents provide.

Honouring the Pillars of Wisdom

Grandparents are often regarded as the pillars of wisdom within a family. Their life experiences, stories, and guidance carry invaluable lessons that are passed down through generations. Grandparents’ Day is a reminder of the depth of knowledge and the wealth of history that grandparents can provide. As we celebrate this day, we acknowledge the role they play in shaping our lives and preserving our family tradi-

Happy Grandparents’ Day

tions.

Strengthening Family Bonds

In a rapidly changing world, Grandparents’ Day offers an opportunity to strengthen family bonds. It encourages family members to come together, whether in person or virtually, to celebrate the unique relationships they share. Grandparents’ Day activities can range from sharing family stories and recipes to engaging in fun and meaningful activities that bridge generational gaps.

Preserving Cultural Heritage

Canada is a diverse nation, and within its borders, countless cultural traditions and heritage are preserved and passed down through generations. Grandparents often serve as the keepers of these traditions, ensuring that cultural practices, languages, and customs remain alive. Grandparents’ Day is an ideal occasion to honor and preserve this rich tapestry

of cultural heritage that makes Canada so unique.

The Value of Interactions

In an era where digital screens often mediate human interactions, the significance of face-to-face time with grandparents cannot be overstated. Spending quality time with grandparents helps young people gain a deeper understanding of their family’s history and values. It fosters connections that are built on real conversations and shared experiences rather than virtual likes and comments.

Ways to Celebrate Grandparents’ Day

Virtual Gatherings: For those separated by distance, organizing a virtual gathering can be a heartwarming way to celebrate. Share stories, play games, or simply have a heartfelt conversation over video calls.

Family Picnic: Plan a family picnic at a local park or your grandparents’ backyard. Enjoy the outdoors, indulge in homemade dishes, and make cherished memories.

Create a Family Tree: Work together to create a family tree, documenting your family’s history and connections. This can be a valuable educational experience for younger family members.

Crafts and Art Projects: Engage in creative activities that can be enjoyed by all generations. Create art, crafts, or even write poems that express your appreciation for your grandparents.

Cook and Share: If there’s a special family recipe that your grandparents are known for, consider cooking it together. Share the meal while reminiscing about past gatherings.

Grandparents’ Day in Canada is not just a date on the calendar; it’s a day to celebrate the living treasures in our families.

Strathcona Vintage Tractor Pulls And Show: Remarkable Success

The Strathcona Vintage Tractor Association (SVTA) celebrated a significant milestone as it hosted the 18th Annual Western Vintage Tractor Pull and Show on August 26 and 27. The SVTA, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of antique tractors manufactured up to 1960, has gained prominence as it unites enthusiasts from across the province.

Hailing from Sherwood Park and Ardrossan, the SVTA focuses on historical agricultural tractors and agricultural

culture. This year’s event witnessed a turnout of over 3,200 adults and young adults, along with 560 to 630 children aged 14 and under.

Bob Beveridge, sharing his thoughts on the event’s success, stated, “This has been our most remarkable year yet. Our attendance figures have soared, thanks to our reputation and the splendid weather.” This year’s event boasted a record-breaking 139 tractor entries, emphasizing its growth.

“Our event drew participants and attendees from two-thirds of the province, including five out of the eight coun-

cilors from the County of Strathcona,” Beveridge proudly noted. He highlighted the SVTA’s commitment to being recognized as the premier Western Canadian Tractor Pull event, with safety and adherence to regulations as top priorities.

Beyond tractor pulls, attendees enjoyed attractions such as threshing and binding demonstrations, sawmill exhibitions, vintage cars and trucks, and various amusements for children. The 50/50 draw on Saturday was $1,030, followed by $955 on Sunday. The silent auction and garage sale tent also saw success, with garage sale items selling out on Saturday

with Beveridge encouraging people to bring more items for the Sunday.

Food vendors provided culinary delights, while ample seating and tents ensured comfortable views. Against the backdrop of Strathcona County’s historic Bremner Farm, attendees could also enjoy primitive camping.

With a $5 cash admission fee per day and free entry for children aged 14 and under, the event encapsulated familyoriented fun. The Strathcona Vintage Tractor Pull and Show once again united history, community, and competition in a memorable weekend.

Budding Young Artists Shine In Spotlight At Vermilion Public Library

The Vermilion Public Library has transformed a designated area of its space into a vibrant canvas, showcasing the remarkable talents of budding young artists in its latest exhibition, “Artists of the Month.” This collection of artworks was carefully curated and nurtured under the guidance of local artist Cindi Plant. Plant, the owner of an art studio within the Vermilion Airport building, has been instrumental in shaping the artistic journey of these young talents.

The artworks on display are the creative fruits of Plant’s labour, stemming from years of dedication to teaching young minds the intricacies of art.

“My classes occur once a week over 9-week sessions in both fall and spring, accompanied by a one-week summer art camp held at my studio,” explained Plant. These instructional sessions were attended by eager students from Vermilion Elementary School and St. Jerome’s, spanning across grades 1 to 6.

A striking centerpiece of this exhibition is a collaborative piece, proudly hung near the library’s entrance, which was crafted during this summer’s art class, with students attending not only from Vermilion but also from cities like Lloydminster, Calgary, Edmonton, and Fort MacMurray. This diverse representation of talent reflects the art studio’s open doors to young artists from far

and wide.

What is most noticeable about the exhibit is the diversity of mediums on display, as many of the pieces feature mixed-mediums such as paints, feathers, wood, strings, rope, glue, etc. As Plant expressed, “I always begin a 9-week session with drawing, and every 9-week session will result in a canvas painting of some subject, with a variety of other projects in between.”

Plant’s teaching philosophy is rooted in nurturing creativity and fostering a love for art.

“My philosophy for teaching art to youth is primarily to expose them to a vast variety of art materials and methods of application,” she emphasized. “The emphasis is always on exercis -

ing creativity and having fun doing it rather than exacting a certain standard of expertise.” This approach has not only honed the technical skills of her students but has also ignited their passion for art.

The success and popularity of Plant’s art classes are evident in her waitlist, which currently boasts 20 eager individuals hoping to partake in her guidance. Despite the demand, she has opted not to actively advertise her services and is not accepting further requests at this time.

How Choosing The Right Lighting Can Set The Mood In Your Home

Submitted

Lighting is a critical element in interior design that can significantly impact the ambiance and mood of your home. Just as the colours you choose and the furniture you arrange contribute to the overall atmosphere, lighting plays a pivotal role in creating the desired emotional tone in each room. In this article, we will explore how choosing the right lighting can set the mood in your home and provide tips on selecting the most suitable lighting options for various spaces.

Understanding the Basics

Before diving into specific lighting choices, it’s essential to grasp some fundamental concepts in lighting design:

a. Colour Temperature: Light is measured in Kelvins (K). Lower Kelvins (2700-3000K) produce warm, yellowish light resembling the cozy glow of candles. Higher Kelvins (5000K and above) create cooler, bluish light akin to daylight.

b. Intensity: The brightness of a light source impacts the mood. Soft, dim lighting promotes relaxation and intimacy, while bright, focused lighting is ideal for

task-oriented spaces.

c. Lighting Layers: Effective lighting often involves layering different types of lighting, such as ambient, task, and accent lighting, to create a balanced and adaptable environment.

Setting the Mood with Lighting

Now, let’s explore how to use lighting to establish different moods within your home:

a. Warm and Cozy: To create a warm and inviting atmosphere in your living room or bedroom, opt for warm-toned, soft lighting with dimmers. Table lamps, floor lamps, and wall sconces with incandescent or warm LED bulbs work well. Consider adding candles for an extra touch of coziness.

b. Energizing and Productive: In spaces where you need to stay focused and energized, such as a home office or kitchen, choose bright, cool-white lighting. LED task lights, recessed ceiling fixtures, and under-cabinet lighting provide adequate illumination for work and productivity.

c. Romantic and Intimate: For a romantic ambiance in the dining room or

bedroom, combine warm, dimmed lighting with accent lighting. Chandeliers with dimmable bulbs, pendant lights, and wallmounted fixtures can create a soft, intimate glow. Consider placing LED strips or candles strategically to enhance the atmosphere.

d. Relaxing and Tranquil: To establish a serene and tranquil environment in spaces like the bathroom or meditation room, select soft, diffused lighting. Frosted glass fixtures, pendant lights with fabric shades, or recessed lighting with frosted covers can achieve a calming effect.

e. Playful and Creative: In areas meant for creativity or play, such as a children’s room or home art studio, experiment with colorful and dynamic lighting options. Coloured LED bulbs, neon signs, and customizable smart lighting systems can help you set the right mood for play and inspiration.

Layering for Balance

Layering different types of lighting is crucial for achieving balanced illumination and setting the desired mood. Consider the following layers:

a. Ambient Lighting: This is the base layer, providing overall illumination to the room. It can come from ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, or wall-mounted fixtures. Use dimmers to adjust the intensity.

b. Task Lighting: Task-specific lighting, such as reading lamps, desk lamps, or under-cabinet lighting, enhances functionality in spaces where you perform specific activities.

c. Accent Lighting: This layer adds depth and highlights key design elements, such as artwork, architectural features, or decorative objects. Track lighting, wall sconces, and spotlights are excellent choices for accentuating focal points.

The right lighting can transform the mood and atmosphere of your home, making it a more comfortable, functional, and enjoyable space. By understanding the basics of colour temperature, intensity, and layering, you can select lighting options that align with your desired ambiance in each room. Whether you aim for warmth, energy, romance, relaxation, or creativity, thoughtful lighting choices can help you achieve your vision and make your home truly shine.

Benefits Of Installing A Water Purification System

Editor

Clean, safe drinking water is essential for a healthy life. While many people rely on municipal water supplies, the quality of tap water can vary widely depending on location and infrastructure. Concerns about contaminants, such as chemicals, heavy metals, and microorganisms, have led an increasing number of homeowners to invest in water purification systems for their households. Here are some of the benefits of having a water purification system installed in your home.

Improved Water Quality

One of the most significant advantages of installing a water purification system in your home is the substantial improvement in water quality. These systems are designed to remove impurities and contaminants, including chlorine, lead, arsenic, bacteria, viruses, and pesticides, that may be present in tap water. As a result, you can enjoy clean, crisp, and pure water straight from your faucets, reducing the risk of exposure to harmful substances.

Enhanced Taste and Odor

Water purification systems also significantly enhance the taste and odor of your tap water. Removing impurities and chlorine, which can impart a chemical taste and odor to water, results in a purer, more refreshing drinking experience. You’ll find that beverages like coffee, tea, and even simple glass of water taste noticeably better when made with purified water.

Health Benefits

The health benefits of consuming purified water cannot be overstated. By eliminating harmful contaminants, you can reduce the risk of waterborne illnesses and long-term health problems associated with exposure to toxins in water. Clean water is

particularly important for vulnerable populations like children, pregnant women, and the elderly, who may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of waterborne contaminants.

Environmental Impact

Installing a water purification system in your home can also contribute to a reduced environmental impact. Bottled water consumption is a major contributor to plastic waste, which has devastating effects on our planet. By purifying your tap water at home, you can reduce the need for singleuse plastic bottles and lessen your carbon footprint.

Cost-Effective

While the initial cost of purchasing and installing a water purification system may seem significant, it is a cost-effective investment in the long run. You’ll save money on bottled water purchases, which can add up over time, and reduce the frequency of plumbing repairs and maintenance due to scale buildup or corrosion caused by hard water.

Convenience

Having a water purification system at home offers unmatched convenience. You no longer need to rely on store-bought bottled water or remember to replace water filter cartridges frequently. Purified water is readily available from any faucet, making it a convenient and practical choice for all your household needs.

Eco-Friendly

Water purification systems are environmentally friendly in multiple ways. As mentioned earlier, they reduce plastic waste by decreasing the need for bottled water. Additionally, they can help conserve water by reducing the frequency of flushing toilets and running faucets to clear unpleasant-tasting or smelly tap water. This contributes to overall water conservation efforts.

Local independent film director Chris Valleau and his cast and crew celebrated wrapping up the final scenes for their short film “The Replacement” in Vermilion on Saturday, September 3.

Inspired by Valleau’s own experiences, the film explores mental health and the healing power of community through the life of Conrad Reimer. Played by Lloydminster actor Branden Martell, Reimer tries to balance his job, his faith, and his marriage, but on the verge of collapse, he finds support and hope in community.

“I was working at a job, about to replace someone who was going to be going on mat leave. I realized that the job was very hard and because of my mental health, I wasn’t able to give the company what they needed. Throughout my marriage, I struggled with depression and anxiety, and it was very hard to manage my life being on three medications,” says Valleau. This film provided a chance for

‘That’s A WRAP’

him to tell his story.

Following a gut feeling, Valleau had posted an ad for cast and crew on Facebook in April 2023, months earlier than he would typically begin recruiting for a project. Suneesh George, co-owner and operator at the Lloydminster-based aerial and portraiture company FlyingPhotos. ca, responded, and Valleau welcomed him on board as Director of Photography for this project in May 2023. George also works as a registered nurse in Lloydminster, where his exposure to patients’ mental health experiences helped foster a passion for this project. Valleau believes their meeting was serendipitous, “It was a miracle that I met him just for this project.”

Casting for the project was a different story: it was community connection, rather than social media, that brought the cast together. Valleau explains, “I was trying to reach out on social media but not one person wanted to be involved. Not one. But by talking to one person, and then another, and then another, I found

exactly who I needed.”

The next steps for the crew involve editing and sound mixing. Valleau is hoping to premiere the 40-minute film locally in

late November or early December. He dreams of sharing it with all of Vermilion and Lloydminster, with every ticket sold going to charity for mental health.

BTPS Superintendent Welcome Message

The start of the new school year brings many emotions. For me, it has always been a time of excitement filled with promise and potential. Seeing school buses in the morning bringing students to school, young students with backpacks walking with energy to meet their new teacher and reconnect with friends, and our high

school students taking courses and preparing for their futures.

We are so excited to welcome students back into our buildings after the Labour Day weekend. The staff at Buffalo Trail Public Schools have been preparing our schools for an exciting new year of learning and success which is evident by many things, including fresh paint, shiny floors, and mowed school yards.

School buses have been cleaned and routes have been designed. Classroom technology and school devices are ready to go. Bulletin boards are being hung and lessons are being created. All this work is being done in preparation for the students and parents to walk through the school doors on Tuesday, September 5th, when the real learning and fun begins.

Buffalo Trail Public Schools is especially focused on caring and including all students. Our principals, teachers, mental health supports, and all our school-based staff are committed to our students, and they inspire me for what I can do to support their work.

The senior leadership team has also been planning and preparing over the summer to do the best in support -

ing our schools and the success of both our staff and students. Starting in late August, we have been meeting with our teachers and principals to have conversations on how we can grow and continue our commitment to learning. With the first Board of Trustees meeting in August already behind us, our Board is also planning and preparing for great things to come.

We are ready and cannot wait to welcome our students and families back to our schools to continue learning, building relationships, and preparing for a bright future. I look forward to us all learning together. I am sure it will be a year filled with exciting memories.

Your Superintendent, Michelle Webb

Vermilion RCMP Arrest Two People On Firearms Charges

Vermilion RCMP

Submitted

County of Vermilion River, Alta. – On Aug. 18, 2023, at approximately 12 a.m., Vermilion RCMP received a complaint of a suspicious vehicle parked at the end of a driveway to a rural residence East of Vermilion, in the County of Vermilion River. Members attended the area of the complaint and located the vehicle in question with two occupants who were passed out inside. Investigation revealed two unsecured firearms in the vehicle, one of which was modified so as to make it prohibited.

As a result of the investigation, Vermilion RCMP arrested and charged both individuals as follows:

Bowdrie Patterson (32), a resident of Wainwright, Alberta, was charged with the following offences: Possession of a prohibited weapon; motor vehicle;

prohibited firearm;

Fail to comply with release order.

Lara Stoyko (33), a residence of Vermilion, was charged with the following offences:

Possession of a prohibited weapon;

Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle;

Possession of a loaded prohibited firearm;

Fail to comply with recognizance.

Patterson and Stoyko were brought before a justice of the peace. Stoyko was released on a Release Order with court set for Sept. 18, 2023, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Vermilion while Patterson was remanded into custody and is set to appear in court on Sept. 12, 2023, at Alberta Court of Justice in Lloydminster.

“Vermilion RCMP members continue to remain committed to working with our communities to improve the safety of our residents. In this case an otherwise innocuous suspicious vehicle complaint quickly turned into a much more serious investigation involving a prohibited firearm. I continue to encourage folks to call in suspicious activity as it happens,” says Sgt. Corey Buckingham of Vermilion RCMP.
