Wetland Explorers Dive Into Aquatic Wonders
Lorna Hamilton Reporter
In a display of collaboration between educational and environmental organizations, young minds embarked on a journey of exploration at the Vermilion Provincial Park Trout Pond on August 2. The Vermilion Public Library, in conjunction with the Vermilion River Watershed Alliance, the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance, and ALUS (Alternative Land Use Services) Vermilion River orchestrated an event titled “Wetland Explorers – Buggin’ out By the Trout Pond,” designed exclusively for children aged 5 to 12.
Under the sunny skies and warm temperatures the day began with Program Coordinator Sheila Heit, from the Vermilion Public Library, reading storyboards that captivated the young audience with a tale that revolved around the art of uncovering nature’s hidden gems.
The children’s attention shifted to a demonstration orchestrated by Rosey Radmanovich, the Planning Coordinator of the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance. With passion and expertise, Radmanovich showed the children the intricate concept of watersheds, shedding light on the impact of human
activities on the delicate balance of these aquatic lifelines. Attendees were amazed by the realization that their actions could significantly influence the health of waterways, such as the Vermilion River.
The children eagerly gathered around volunteer Rick Passer. His patient guidance enabled them to partake in the exhilarating net dipping experience, where he delved into the waters of the Trout Pond to discover an amazing array of water insects. Their faces lit up with awe and excitement as they had the opportunity to see in real life the many aquatic insects that reside in the pond.
The planned events were interrupted for a few minutes when a double-crested Cormorant unexpectantly wandered up to the Trout Pond and displayed her wing-spreading drying technique.
Sheila expressed her gratitude for the partnerships that culminated in this educational event.
Esteemed guests Rosey Radmanovich from the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance and Chris Elder representing the County of Vermilion ALUS program lent their wisdom to the event, as well as volunteer Rick Passer who is also associated with the Vermilion River Watershed Alliance.

Families flocked to Main Street Kitscoty as Farmstead Market & More hosted an Outdoor Market on August 1.
“We’re such a small town; we need to support one another in order to grow and sustain,” said owner Angie McLean. “This is the fourth summer we’ve been doing it, and it’s a way of bringing people out visiting and supporting their local makers. Our store was created to give smaller businesses an opportunity to sell without having to purchase a retail spot themselves, because you can’t always do markets.” Vendors ranged from 9-years-old to retirement age, and covered a multitude of products.
Brenda Rose began her sublimation business, Salty B’s Creations, three years ago
Kitscoty Outdoor Market
and said attending markets in Kitscoty has been worth it for the atmosphere and the people. Natalie Charlton from Swiss Miss Creations shared a range of fabric and paper crafts. After giving up working on cattle wagons, Bob Thomas began distributing maple syrup as a semi-retirement job with Erabliere Le Murmure du Printemps from Dunham, Quebec. Dave Rechlo from Blackfoot showcased 80 different products such as wallets, belts, leashes, holsters, and book covers with Dave’s Kustom Leather, and said he’s expanding all the time with various requests.
“One wallet could be carved in five hours, but it could take eight with painting, or more if laced with every stitch done by hand,” said Rechlo.
Local students had a booth fundraising with chocolates and water spikes for Kits-
coty High School. The whole region was represented with Charlotte Harwood from McLaughlin sharing her Krazy Kat LadyBannock and Baking. Cori’s Cookie Shop by Corinna and Terry Brisbourne, displayed a variety of sweet treats including their specialty decorated sugar cookies. They noted that they take custom orders for events.
A highlight were chair massages by RMT and NKT, Katie Hines, from Clary Sage Wellness right in Kitscoty. Practicing for 15 years, she used to play hockey with the U of C, and thought it would pair nicely with sports. She had been encouraged to come out by her 9-year-old entrepreneur son, Roscoe, who sold popcorn and candy to raise funds for a hoverboard.
“I wanted to come to the Outdoor Market again because of all the excitement there is,” said Roscoe.
Barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers allowed families to stay throughout the evening and peruse all the different vendors. They often have live entertainment or an open mic on their licensed patio. Children often enjoy playing, getting their face painted, or grabbing an ice cream from Main Street Scoops.
The Outdoor Markets will also run August 15, and 29, and there will be a Harvest Market September 12.
“SInce May four of our Outdoor Markets have been cancelled due to rain, and last week we went ahead with it even though it was raining as we set up; so today’s been gorgeous with a steady stream of people. Thank you to the vendors for continuing to come out (even on the bad days), and to the people who came to support our community,” said McLean.

Apple Spice Muffins

It’s once again apple season. I am fortunate to have an apple tree, and they are mostly ready, and some are already over ripe. It’s earlier than usual. The crops in the field are beginning to turn golden, and soon we will be swathing. The zucchini and spaghetti squash plants in the garden, are beginning to yield their vegetables. Today I pulled a few beets, and some fresh dill, and made a big pot of borsht, and a pan of apple crisp, both recipes have been previously printed in this newspaper.
Here is another apple recipe that is perfect for school lunches or a crew of harvesters. When you are slicing the apples, be sure to leave the peel on, as that is where many

of the beneficial nutrients are. Apples are a good source of beneficial fiber. They have also been shown to aid in weight loss and help balance blood sugar, so be sure to eat them raw as well. Apples contain malic acid which has been shown to clean the liver. Oats and flax seed both contain beneficial fiber. Ginger is anti-inflammatory, and cinnamon helps to balance blood sugar.
Apple Spice Muffins
1 cup unbleached flour
1/2 cup ground flax seed
1/2 cup ground oat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon sea salt (optional)
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 egg
1/3 cup olive oil or real butter
3/4 cup water or milk
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup grated apple
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line 12 muffin tins with papers, or grease well. In a mixing bowl add all the dry ingredients including the spices. In a second bowl mix together the wet ingredients includ -
ing the eggs, butter, water or milk and stir well. Add the wet ingredient mixture to the dry and stir until just mixed, do not overstir or your muffins will be tough. Stir in the grated apple. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.
Today, I am taking a look at what was happening at the beginning of March 1906 in Vermilion.
First, Harry Bowtell had returned from Edmonton where he was on business. Meanwhile, R.E. McCormick had completed the addition to his pool room
and N. Murray completed a comfortable office next to the Bank of Montreal and was moving into it.
A Mr. Dobson from North Battleford was putting up a building next to the Vermilion Trading Company’s store, and it was his intent to start a tailoring business there.
A new sign was put up over the post office and by all accounts was described as quite nice. Also on the note of the post office, tenders were put out for someone to carry the mail from the Vermilion station to the post office six times a week. It was hoped that someone would soon take on the job that was become a vital need in the community. The post office also found out that as of March 1, the name Vermilion could be used. Prior to this, the name of Breage
was used.
One bit of sad news was that Willie McCormick, a young child, had died after a week of illness. His funeral was held in March and was well-attended by residents of the growing community.
An addition on the Alberta Hotel was completed and opened to the public. This addition had 12 rooms to give the hotel a total of 30 rooms. The new bar had also opened and was described as being the best in the west.
W.J. McNab was doing well with his fur business. The previous month, he had been able to purchase $2,000 in skins and sell them for a profit.
Last, the Vermilion Trading Company was rushing to finish its store. The store would be two-storeys, measuring 32 by 68 feet with an 8x10 feet plate glass
window at the front.

In Vermilion, the local Order of the Eastern Star (OES) Chapter, in collaboration with Cornerstone Co-op, held a Hot Dog and Hamburger Sale on August 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event was a resounding success, with community members joining forces to not only indulge in delicious treats but also to contribute to a noble cause.
The proceeds from the event were dedicated to the guide dog program in Alberta, specifically benefiting the BC/ AB Guide Dogs organization. The Queen Esther Chapter OES, known for its unwavering support for Guide Dog Programs across Canada and the United States,
Hot Dogs For Service Dogs
demonstrated once again the power of community collaboration.
The event wasn’t just about fundraising – it aimed to raise awareness about the exceptional abilities of service dogs and their transformative impact on the lives of their owners and families. These incredible animals serve a myriad of roles, from guiding the visually impaired to alerting the hearing impaired, offering assistance to individuals with mobility challenges, and providing essential emotional support.
The Hot Dog and Hamburger Sale not only satisfied appetites but also ignited a spark of compassion and appreciation for the service dogs that play an integral role in society.
Mannville Mammoths 13U Secure Provincial Silver Medal
Lorna Hamilton Reporter
The Mannville Mammoth’s 13U baseball team capped off their season with a remarkable victory, clinching the 13U League Championship by outperforming the Irma Tigers. The team’s journey from early May to June 29th showcased their strength and determination, leaving a lasting impression on the provincial baseball scene.
Amid rising competition during the Provincials, the Mammoths strategically bolstered their lineup by enlisting two players from Wainwright and one from Hughenden. These additions significantly contributed to the team’s flawless 6-0 record in the tiering games, setting the stage for the Tier 1 Championship weekend held in Hanna.
Advancing undefeated through the round-robin phase with a 3-0 record, the Mammoths secured their spot in the Gold Medal match. The final showdown pitted
them against Thorsby, the province’s top team. Mannville initially established a lead, heading into the seventh inning with a four-run advantage. However, Thorsby mounted a late comeback, tying the score at 12-12 and ultimately securing victory with a decisive hit.
Despite falling just short of the ultimate title, the Mannville Mammoths returned home with the Provincial Silver Medal, a testament to their dedication and skill. This achievement was made possible through the collective support of the Association, sponsors, volunteers, and families.
The team’s grit and relentless effort throughout the season deserve commendation, and they stand as a source of inspiration for the Mannville community. The Mammoths’ journey serves as a reminder of the heights that can be achieved through teamwork and determination, solidifying their place in provincial baseball history.

Senior Army Cadet Honoured With Award
Lorna Hamilton Reporter
A momentous occasion unfolded on August 4 at the Lt. Col Craig Armoury. The purpose of the gathering was to bestow the Annual Top Senior Cadet award upon a deserving recipient, Cadet Master Ward Officer Alora Smith. This award was presented under the distinguished patronage of President Don Henry and Vice President Walter Weir of the Lt. Col W. C. Craig Armoury Historical Society, acting on behalf of
Captain Chris Atkin, MMM CD Ret., and Lt. Col. Grant McLean OMM CD Ret.
In the presentation, The Loyal Edmonton Regiment Cadet Corps 2645 Vermilion Cadet Master Ward Officer Alora Smith was not only granted a cash award of $50, but also had the honour of her name being inscribed on a trophy that stands as a tribute to the memory of 2nd Lieutenant Brian John Denness CD, a stalwart advocate of cadet corps and competitive shooting.
The creation of this annual award owes its existence to the collaboration of Major Chris Atkin, OMM CD Ret., Lt. Col. Grant McLean OMM CD Ret., and Capt. Don Henry
CD Ret. The award serves as a lasting tribute to the spirit of 2nd Lt. Brian John Denness CD.
Reflecting on the significance of the award, Major Chris Atkin, OMM CD Ret., shared, “The award was in honour of a dedicated member of the British and Canadian Army and late of the Regiment, 2nd Lt. Brian John Denness CD. Brian was an extraordinary individual whose dedication to duty outshone all others. He was without peer as a rifle/ small arms Canadian Forces shooting coach and Alberta District Recruiting Officer. He is a person for whom Grant and I have a great fondness. Sadly, Brian passed away in June of 2016. The Vermilion Corps award is intended to keep his memory alive.”
President Don Henry explained that
the receiving Cadet must be a senior cadet, and at least a gold star level. He further explained that the cadet is selected by a promotion review board led by the Commanding Officer of Corps, and that the award may not be awarded each year.
In a conclusion to her journey within the Vermilion Cadet Corps, Cadet Master Ward Officer Alora Smith, who is on the cusp of transitioning to the next chapter of her life expressed her thoughts upon receiving the award, stating, “I was very shocked and honoured to receive the award. I am honoured to be a part of something bigger, and it is always really special to be a part of this memorial award vs any other award. I am really proud of myself for working hard to be eligible to receive it.”
