The Vermilion Ag Society hosted the 117th Vermilion Fair, drawing in thousands of enthusiastic visitors and fairgoers. The event, which took place over three days, offered a plethora of delightful experiences, exciting activities, and mouthwatering treats that left everyone with cherished memories to last a lifetime.
Kicking off the festivities in style, the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce organized a Fair Kick-off party on Wednesday evening. Attendees were treated to a delectable array of chili samples during the chili cook-off.
Thursday morning marked the official commencement of the Fair, beginning with a pancake breakfast at the Vermilion Royal Canadian Legion from 6:30
a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The breakfast fueled the excitement, as everyone eagerly secured their favourite spots along the parade route, which gracefully made its way through the heart of Vermilion, beginning at 11 a.m. A delightful showcase of creativity, many floats embraced the theme of this year’s Fair - “Dust, Rust, or Bust,” each representing the unique interpretation of businesses and organizations.
Throughout the three-day event, fairgoers were presented with the option to obtain a thrifty three-day pass priced at only $20 or a daily pass for $10. These passes provided access to a wide array of attractions, including the bustling midway, captivating livestock shows, grandstand spectacles, exhibit hall, tradeshow, antique and modified tractor pulls, new lawn mower races, the
Old MacDonald’s barn, and the adrenaline-pumping APCCA pony chariots and chuckwagon races. In addition, the Fair featured open stages, beer gardens, and a host of other family-friendly activities that firmly established it as one of the most cherished and sought-after events in the region.
The West Coast Amusement rides added an extra layer of excitement, offering day bracelets, which allowed ridegoers unlimited access to all the thrilling rides throughout the day. The resounding sounds of laughter and ecstatic squeals emanated from the Fairgrounds, as families relished these moments.
The culinary offerings at the Fair were nothing short of exceptional. Numerous food trucks, caterers, ice cream vendors, lemonade stands, and more tantalized the taste buds of visitors. The Fair-
grounds buzzed with a delightful mix of aromas, enticing everyone to indulge in a gastronomic journey unlike any other. A crucial element contributing to the seamless execution of the Vermilion Fair was the army of dedicated volunteers. Year after year, the Vermilion Agricultural Society relies on the unwavering support of hundreds of individuals who selflessly give their time and effort to make the Fair a resounding success. Their commitment to ensuring everything runs smoothly and that everyone has a fantastic time was evident throughout the event.
The Vermilion Agricultural Society extends its heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers, sponsors, and participants who contributed to the grand success of the 117th Vermilion Fair. Without their invaluable support, such a remarkable event could not have been possible.

Hot milk cake is a vintage recipe that uses basic ingredients, with excellent results. Even though Hot Milk Cake has been around for over a century, there is a lot of science as to why it is so successful, and even said to be fail-proof. The fat in the butter-milk mixture helps prevent the milk from toughening the gluten in the flour, thus leading to a tender cake. The well-beaten eggs incorporates air for leavening, and the hot milk helps to denature the protein in the eggs, contributing to the stable sponge structure. The batter can be divided into 2 round pans for a layer cake or birthday cake. It can be iced with broiled coconut brown sugar icing, or a buttercream icing, or whipped cream and

fresh fruit. This cake can be used as a base for a poke cake, in which you use the small end of a wooden spoon to poke holes in the cake, and fill it with liquid Jello, or fruit gelatin or caramel, or chocolate sauce and top with whipped cream. A fruit gelatin can be spooned into the holes and then the cake is refrigerated long enough for the gelatin to gel. It is then topped with sweetened whipped cream. The gelled fruit gelatin in the cake makes the cake very moist and adds an additional layer of flavour. It’s hard to have just one piece of this cake! This recipe is a keeper.
Hot Milk Cake
4 eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/4 cups milk
1/2 cup butter
2 1/4 cups unbleached flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons vanilla
Butter a 9 x 13 cake pan. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a pot warm the milk until the milk is steaming hot and the butter melts (do not boil). In a large bowl beat the eggs until creamy and frothy. Add in the sugar by the 1/2 cups, and beat until soft peaks. Stir in the flour, vanilla, and baking powder. Pour in the milk-butter mixture into the batter, a 1/2 cup at a time, beating it into the batter. Pour into the buttered cake pan and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in comes out clean.
Fruit Gelatin
Dissolve 1 package of Knox gelatin in ½ cup of boiling water. Stir until the entire gelatin is dissolved. Add 1 cup fruit juice and stir. Pour spoonful’s of the fruit gelatin into the holes in the cake. Refrigerate the cake for the gelatin to set. I used Saskatoon juice and it was awesome. You can also use freshly squeezed orange juice, mashed strawberries or raspberries and their juice.
You can also double the batch of fruit gelatin and top the whipped cream, at the time of serving with a dollop of partially gelled fruit gelatin.
Whipped Cream Topping
Combine 1 cup whipping cream, 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla in a mixing bowl. Whip until soft peaks are formed. Do not over whip or you will end up with butter.
Caramel Coconut Topping
3/4 cup brown sugar
6 Tablespoons butter
1/4 cup cream
1 cup coconut
Spread the Caramel Coconut topping on the cake and broil until the topping starts to bubble all over, about 3 – 5 minutes depending on how close the cake is to the broiler. Watch carefully to be sure the topping does not burn. Cool completely, and slice into squares for serving.
The August 1931 Storm
Growing up on a farm near Stony Plain, I always remember seeing storms coming in and just how strong they could be.
Storms are nothing new for Vermilion either, and some can be worse than others.
One vicious storm that hit the area in August 1931, happened to hit just as people were hoping for good crops as drought conditions worsened.
It was on Aug. 4, 1931 when one of the worst thunderstorms of the season struck the area.
The storm hit as the evening performances of the Vermilion Fair were underway. Within a few minutes, tent flaps were flying and hundreds of cars with hundreds of children were

quickly getting off the fair grounds and back home.
Hail soon fell down and with the high wind, it created a terrific storm. The day itself had been hot and humid, so the storm fed on that and proved to be extra vicious when it struck the area.
After the storm quieted down, a heavy rain fell through the night. While that may have seemed great for farmers who were dealing with the start of The Great Depression, the storm itself had destroyed 10 per cent of the crops in the area.
The storm also produced a small tornado that ripped off the overhang roof of the CNR station in Mannville, and took off the roof of the Bank of Montreal. Every radio antenna in the area was also taken off buildings.
At the Hayward lumber yards, the heavy gate was torn off its hinges and driven through a house on the opposite side of the street. All the phone lines were also down around Mannville.
As for Vermilion, the storm completely messed up the fair, and the races and football tournaments were cancelled as a result.

The New Renewable Tech Taking On Fossil Fuels
Braxton Hoare Columnist
When it comes to renewable energy, we have seen significant strides in harnessing power from sources like solar and wind. These technologies have been making headlines for their potential to provide affordable and climatefriendly alternatives to traditional energy sources. However, a new company that goes by the name of SWEL says its new ‘Waveline Magnet’ model is the next step for renewable energy.
SWEL has developed a new method for producing renewable energy using wave power. Their concept design, which consists of floating platforms interconnected through a spine-like central power system demonstrates a clever yet simple construction. The flexible and modular design aims to seamlessly follow the movements of waves, allowing the company to regulate the energy extraction process in a controlled and nondisruptive manner.
One of the most significant advantages of SWEL’s Waveline Magnet is its lightweight and simple design. Unlike competing companies that rely on large, invasive concrete and steel
SWEL’s approach appears to be much more cost-effective in terms of manufacturing and transportation. The utilization of manageable and recyclable materials, such as reinforced plastics, makes the device easy to repair and maintain, which is a crucial factor for any renewable energy technology.
SWEL also claims that a single Waveline Magnet wave energy converter could generate an impressive 100 megawatts of power. While this figure is undoubtedly captivating, it does leave questions about the practicality of such a device. How long and massive would it need to be to achieve such high power outputs consistently? This claim is also based on testing conducted with relatively short waves, which may not be representative of realworld conditions.
wide version
Despite this, the company boasts about achieving a raw mechanical power
output as low as $0.01/kWh, significantly outperforming the wave energy industry’s reference value of $0.85/kWh. If true, this would be a remarkable feat, putting wave power technology on par with fossil fuels and absolutely surpassing other renewable energy sources.
As with any emerging technology, there are inherent challenges and uncertainties that need to be addressed. While SWEL’s concept design seems promising, it is essential to remember that it is still in its early stages. The transition from a prototype to a scalable and commercially viable product is often a complex and lengthy process. Additionally, wave energy is subject to natural variations, and harnessing its full potential on a large scale may require overcoming various technical and logistical obstacles.
Furthermore, the environmental

impacts of deploying large-scale wave energy converters need to be thoroughly evaluated. Although SWEL’s design claims to be less intrusive, it is essential to assess its potential effects on marine ecosystems and coastal environments before embracing it as a green energy solution.
SWEL’s Waveline Magnet presents an exciting opportunity in the field of renewables. Its lightweight and modular design, coupled with the promise of high energy output at a low cost, certainly pique interest. However, we must approach these claims with a healthy dose of skepticism until thorough and independent testing and verification are conducted. Only then can we determine whether SWEL’s Waveline Magnet has the potential to reinvent the energy sector and become a gamechanger in the world of renewable energy.

Lakeland College and Alberta Grains hosted WheatStalk in Vermilion on July 25, with over 50 producers, industry professionals, and academic research students taking part.
“Eighty per cent of grains produced in Canada are shipped internationally, so we we need to be sure we are producing what is desirable to the buyers; and these field days help to make decision making easier on the farm, allowing producers to narrow

down how much they should use of certain products,” said Jeremy Boychyn, Agronomy Research Extension Manager with Alberta Grains. “The collaborative conversations that happen at events like this are over 50 per cent of the value, coming together allows potential for new research ideas, etc.”
“This is the first year we’ve hosted together and we’ve almost tripled the attendees from last year; it’s a great partnership. Both of our organizations strive at improving productivity, profitability, and sustainability of crop farming and the Agriculture industry in Alberta,” said Francois Paradis, Lakeland College’s Director of Applied Research.
Not only the trials being done at the college were showcased, but attendees had the opportunity to hear from a range of industry experts. Boychyn said it allowed the participants to be more hands-on, and see how different concepts impact the crops they grow.
Crop Research Scientist for pulses and cereals at Lakeland College, Daniel Pucko, said they discussed peas, lentils, faba beans, and a feasibility study for lupins.
“Grown a lot in Australia and Europe, they would be used mostly for feed. We are seeing what works here and laying the groundwork for a potential new crop,” said Pucko. They discussed weed management, and a bio-stimulant for canola that allows farm-
ers to supplement or use less nitrogen. An enhanced efficiency fertilizer trial prevents the loss of nitrogen, and a plant growth regulator trial (which was headed by Lakeland College) encourages the plants to grow shorter and thicker to avoid lodging.
“We are seeing a height difference in barley with not much impact on yield,” said Pucko.
Overall everyone enjoyed being outdoors in the nice weather and taking in the variety of crop insights.
“The Agriculture industry feeds people, and improving management practices can improve yields, increase environmental sustainability, and ensure profitability for the farmer,” said Paradis.

Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club 48th Annual Achievement Day
Lorna Hamilton Reporter
The Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club held its 48th Annual Achievement Day on Tuesday, July 25. This event provided an excellent platform for the club members to showcase their hard work and dedication to the public.
Over the course of the year, club members engaged in a variety of activities and workshops designed to enhance their knowledge and skills. They learned effective communication techniques, participated in hands-on grooming, nutrition, parasite management, and pathology workshops, among others. Armed with
this valuable knowledge, the members were eager to demonstrate their knowledge at the event.
The journey to Achievement Day began sixty days prior when each member receives their market lambs. From that point forward, the members invest their time and effort in nurturing, feeding, and training their lambs for the show. In the days leading up to the event, the club members find themselves fully immersed in washing, grooming, and diligently working with their project animals.
This preparation not only enables the members to refine their skills but also helps their project animals acclimate to
the show environment. As a result, the members and their animals become more poised, attentive, and better equipped to follow the ring master’s instructions and respond to the judge’s inquiries. Furthermore, this thorough preparation significantly reduces stress levels for both the participants and the animals.
Starting at 1 p.m., spectators witnessed the impressive showcase of these wellraised animals at the Vermilion Ag Society Sheep Barn. The final market lamb and goat show classes commenced at 6 p.m., with the sale at 7 p.m. in the same venue.
Enthusiastic buyers had the opportu -
nity to bid on four goats and twelve market lambs.
The event also presented an opportunity for individuals who were considering joining the club to gain valuable insight into the club’s activities. Contrary to popular belief, 4-H is not exclusively for individuals with farming backgrounds or those involved in sheep rearing. It serves as an inclusive platform for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of sheep and acquiring diverse skills, all while fostering new connections within the community. Keep an eye on the Vermilion Voice to see the results and pictures from the show.

Hi everybody!
I'm Boo Boo!
I'm on the lookout for my furever home! My sweet personality and big-orange demeanour have quickly won over the ladies here at the shelter, and I'm sure to work my magic on you as well! I am a big fan of cuddling, and would be the perfect couch buddy! My favourite time of day is feeding time, I get some snacks and some scratches too! I'm an avid napper as well, but I would much rather snooze on a comfy couch than here in my kennel!
If your looking for a lazy buddy to keep you company, call the shelter to book an appointment to meet me!
