Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club Annual Show And Sale

The Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club showcased their hard work and talent at the 58th Annual Show and Sale, held on May 31 at the Minburn Ag Grounds. With a strong turnout of supporters, the event highlighted the efforts of 19 dedicated 4-H members, and the five cleaver kids with one child presenting a heifer project and the other four children showing calves.

The day began with a lunch sponsored by Webb’s Machinery, setting the stage for the exciting activities ahead. At 2 p.m., the show commenced, where members aged

9-18 presented their well-groomed steers, heifers, and cow/calf pairs for conformation judging by Riley Noble, and showmanship and grooming evaluation by Judge Kaylee Chizaesky.

The animals on display reflected the members’ expertise in halter breaking, grooming, and clipping techniques, impressing both judges and spectators. The event provided an opportunity for the judges to assess the outcome of the members’ careful selection and diligent care in raising their project animals.

In the female category, Brad McLaughlin’s well-defined animal earned the Grand Champion Female title, reflecting his dedication and hard

work.

Austin Garnier’s exceptional female entry secured the Reserve Champion Female title, further highlighting the high quality of animals presented by the Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club.

Following the show, attendees were treated to a sponsored supper by Rocky Mountain Equipment and Cornerstone Co-op at 5 p.m., providing a chance for participants to recharge and enjoy a meal together.

The much-anticipated sale commenced at 6:30 p.m., with 18 steers up for grabs by buyers.

Among the outstanding results, Rylan Jackson’s steer claimed the title

of Grand Champion Steer, impressing the judges with its exceptional qualities. Deerland Vegreville purchased Rylan’s champion steer. Rowan Jackson secured the Reserve Champion Steer title, with the Wilde Advisory Group seizing the opportunity to purchase the remarkable animal.

The club extends their gratitude to all sponsors for their generous support.

“It was great to see everyone out and we would like to thank everyone for the incredible amount of support shown to our club for today and throughout the year,” commented Carmen Kassian one of the group leaders.

In support of brain injury awareness, the 18th Annual Courage Canada Trail Ride took place on May 27. Heading out on a 10 mile journey from Minburn, they later met at the Innisfree Recreation Centre for a supper, live and silent auction, cowboy poetry and musical entertainment by Bryce West.

you see how strong you are and what you are made of,” said brain injury survivor Curtis Anderson.

Injured bull riding at the 2002 Ponoka Stampede, he was in a coma for several days, spent one week short of a year in hospital, and has been regaining strength for the past 21 years. The most important message he said is to never give up. Speaking around western Canada, Anderson advocates for brain injury awareness and the use of helmets.

“I have never walked a mile in anyone else’s shoes, but I know what it means to never give up. It was eight years before I could use a left railing; stairs are often made with a rail on only one side. There is no such thing as can’t to any challenge you or I make in life. Be the type of person that never gives up when faced with adversity,” said Anderson.

This year’s ride featured two teams, seven wagon riders, and over 20 people on horseback; and approximately 100 people attended the banquet. Ander-

son was thankful to the community for the support and all those who went on the ride saying, “That’s what makes the ride happen is all the support from the surrounding area.”

Proceeds from the silent auction went to support the Edmonton Veteran’s Food Bank. The majority of the proceeds from the Courage Canada Trail Ride supported four Brain Injury Centres and the Canadian Pro Rodeo Sports Medicine Team. To donate you can call Curtis at 780-581-4802.

Vermilion Lions Club CNIB Golf Tournament

The Vermilion Lions Club hosted its 24th Annual Texas Scramble Golf Tournament at the Vermilion Golf and Country Club on June 2, at 1 p.m.

The Vermilion Lions Club was ecstatic to once again be able to hold a golf tournament in support of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB and Canadians with vision loss.

16 teams attended and battled the extremely windy conditions for the cause. During the game participants were challenged by a long blind drive for men and women, a longest blind fold putt, and had the opportunity to win a $10,000 hole-in-one prize; however either way every golfer went home with a prize. Once golfing was complete attendees were able to enjoy a steak supper with all the trimmings. They also had the opportunity to try on glasses that simulated macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic reti -

nopathy.

According to cnib.ca, an estimated 1.5 million Canadians identify themselves as having a sight loss and an estimated 5.59 million more have an eye disease that could cause sight loss. Of the four major eye diseases; 3,541,000 people are affected by cataracts, 1,574,000 are reported to have age-related macular degeneration, 294,600 have glaucoma and 749,800 people have been affected by diabetic retinopathy. They also say that every 10 minutes someone in Canada begins losing their sight and that each year, 50,000 Canadians will lose their sight which significantly impacts their well-being and quality of life.

Ashlee Rolheiser, CNIB Manager of Philanthropy for Alberta and the Northwest Territories since 2020 said that the CNIB Golf Tournament is the core of what they do.

“This event gets the community together to help those living with blind -

ness or vision loss! This event is incredibly important, as CNIB and the Vermilion Lions Club have been collaborating for more than two decades,” commented Ashlee.

Lions Club member and organizer of the tournament Cliff Rolheiser was surprised and grateful for the number of participants.

“We had an excellent turnout and we are very grateful for all the sponsors, and this year we had 69 hole sponsors and we are thankful to the community who participated.

This year we are raising more money for the CNIB than ever before,” commented Cliff.

Entry fees were $70 and included nine holes of golf, supper, and prizes.

New Detachment Commander At Vermilion RCMP

Vermilion RCMP welcomed a new Detachment Commander, Corey Buckingham, on May 1. Sgt. Buckingham previously served as a Corporal in Vermilion from 2015 – 2018, and as the Kitscoty Detachment Commander until this spring.

“I grew up in small-town Saskatchewan with my first posting in Williams Lake, B.C, followed by La Loche and Meadow Lake Saskatchewan. I’ve lived here since 2015 and maintained ties

with the community while working in Kitscoty. The opportunity for a promotion came up there and I was fortunate to be selected, but I did always hope to be back here at some point. We really like the community and have a family with two school-age children. We like the location, the size of the community; we’re grateful for the friends we’ve made here, and we are very happy with the opportunities for our children,” said Buckingham. “I’ve gained an hour a day and am very thankful to be working in the same community as my family. I think my knowledge of the community can help make a positive difference here.”

Outside of work, he is a member of the Vermilion Rotary Club, and partici pates in the local golf and rec hockey communities. At work, he will be over seeing a fairly similar size staff and detachment area as he had in Kist coty. Over the past week, he said they received a large variety of calls from minor property crime and theft to major break and enters, theft of motor vehi cles, persons crimes, as well as traffic complaints, noise complaints, and 9-1-1 calls. Anytime they respond to EMS calls, he says they will have a personal

room, and small amounts of meat such as fish. These Japanese women only eat until they are 80 percent full. In Japan, elderly women are highly respected and sought after for their wisdom. When a girl is very young in Japan, she is put into an all-girl “friends group” by her parents. This group of friends, called moai will be committed friends for a lifetime, often gathering as a group to have tea and conversation, supporting each other through good and bad times. In Okinawa there is no word for retirement in their language. They keep busy and have a purpose every day.

Tuna is an excellent and inexpensive source or protein. Tuna is also a source of omega-3 fatty acids that benefit the heart, eyes, and brain. When selecting canned tuna, look for small tuna varieties such as light and skipjack, and avoid the larger varieties such as albacore, which are more likely to contain mercury. The B vitamins in tuna help to strengthen

bones and skin. Tuna is a good source of potassium and when combined with its omega-3, it is helpful in both reducing cardiovascular inflammation and lowering blood pressure.

Mannville, AB – The Village of Mannville is proud to announce the purchase of 14 new electric golf carts, thanks in part to funding by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre.

“We are thrilled to be able to make the switch to these electric carts,” said Rex Smith, Mayor of the Village of Mannville. Not only are they better for the environment, but they also provide a more enjoyable experience for our golfers.”

The funding from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre made it possible for the Village of Mannville’s Riverview Golf Course to make this investment in sustainable infrastructure. The Centre provides funding and support to municipalities across Alberta to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Originally, the land of Vermilion was home to the Blackfoot people. The Blackfoot were called the People of the Bison or Buffalo, due to how important bison were to their way of life.

Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the Blackfoot territory stretched from the Rocky Mountains, down into present-day Montana

The government of Canada is considering a ban on “forever chemicals” to safeguard the well-being of its citizens. These chemicals, known as “PFAS”, pose health risks at incredibly low levels and are resistant to breaking down in the environment. But why is this problem suddenly gaining attention, why could these chemicals be banned, and

and parts of Idaho, to the east until about Regina. It was a huge amount of land, with the northern part of the territory being the North Saskatchewan River.

On the other side of the river, you start getting into the lower territory of the Dene, and parts of Cree and Assiniboine territory.

If you go about one hour to the southwest of Vermilion, you will find the Viking Ribstones. Sitting on a hill that rises over the area, these stones have been carved with ribs and other bison attributes. It was, and remains, an extremely important location for the Indigenous people.

From the hill, the Indigenous could look out over the land and see the bison herds, and where they needed to hunt. The

stones themselves likely served a ceremonial purpose as well and were probably a pilgrimage spot.

Going back to Vermilion, once Europeans arrived in eastern Canada and started giving guns to the Cree in exchange for furs, that changed the territorial dynamic.

The Cree, using guns, were able to massively expand their territory to the north and west, eventually arriving in the area of present-day Vermilion where they pushed the Blackfoot out of.

This sparked a territorial conflict that lasted for decades, and only became more deadly as the decades went on. In fact, the last Indigenous battle ever fought in what is now Canada was fought between the Cree

and Blackfoot near Lethbridge. Eventually, realizing the fighting needed to stop, the Cree and Blackfoot came to a peaceful arrangement, dividing their territory with the Cree getting north of the Red Deer River, and the Blackfoot getting south of it.

Forever Chemicals May Be Banned

how does this impact Canadians.

PFAS is a group of human-made chemicals found in everyday products like food packaging, clothing, and childrens toys. These chemicals have been used since the mid-20th century and are highly persistent, making them nearly impossible to break down in the environment. Their presence in Canadian drinking water sources has raised significant concerns for public health.

A recent report by Health Canada and Environment Canada revealed their use is so widespread that they are now

found all over the place: in our water, our soils, our wastewater, our landfills and even the bloodstreams of people and animals. Studies have shown that even at extremely low levels, PFAS can be harmful to both human health and wildlife. These chemicals tend to accumulate in organs such as the liver and kidneys, posing long-term risks. Because PFAS breaks down very slowly, organisms are repeatedly exposed to them, leading to a gradual buildup of these chemicals in their bodies over time.

Health Canada suggests listing PFAS

as toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), which would pave the way for potential regulations and a ban on these harmful substances. The government is seeking public input until mid-July to gather opinions and insights before making any final decisions. If a ban is achieved this will require many products to be re-engineered to avoid these toxic chemicals. Which may take additional time for certain products leading to an awkward transition period similar to what was seen in 2022 with the plastic straw ban.

Lakeland College hosted three convocation ceremonies; one in Lloydminster on May 26, and two in Vermilion on June 2.

Students were thrilled to earn their diplomas, and staff and families were very supportive and happy to celebrate with them. Some said they look forward to working in the industry and enjoyed the instructors at Lakeland College.

“It’s very hands on and the classes are pretty small so it’s easy to talk to our professors. I plan on coming back for another year as a double diploma student for Crop Technology,” said Breeze Kriston.

Previous supporter of numerous initiatives at Lakeland College, Judy Sweet was selected as the 2023 Distinguished Citizen and presented an honorary degree.

A few of the students were noted as

being 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th generation Alumni. Marilyn Young had been noted as the Distinguished Alumni (Class of 1997).

“We’re here today recognizing your accomplishments academically as well as club and extracurricular activities. We are proud of you. Throughout your time here we met with you, learned with you, and learned from you. We had the opportunity to celebrate so many milestones with you and cheer along as you were preparing

harvest fields, welcomed the bison home, celebrated 10 years of Band in the Sand, and held the very first Farm 4.0,” said President and CEO Dr. Alice WainwrightStewart. “You are learning skills you will need to be successful, and it’s been an honour to cheer for you each step of the way. Wherever you go, you are still part of the Lakeland family. Congratulations, and the very best in the rest of your life’s journey.”

Celebrating Alberta’s Farmers

Happy Farmer's Day

Among the vast prairies and the fertile soil that sustains Alberta’s agricultural landscape, lies a group of individuals who form the backbone of our province’s economy - farmers. On Farmer’s Day, we gather to recognize and pay tribute to these remarkable individuals who tirelessly work to cultivate our land, secure our food supply, and contribute immensely to our communities. It is a day to celebrate the unstoppable spirit and invaluable contributions of Alberta’s farmers.

Alberta’s farmers are no strangers to adversity. They have battled harsh weather conditions, crop diseases, fluctuating markets, and other challenges that come with the territory. Yet, through it all, they have persevered, adapting their practices and embracing innovation to ensure their farms thrive and continue to provide for the province and beyond. Their resilience is a testament to their unwavering commitment to their craft and their determination to overcome any obstacle that

stands in their way.

The agricultural sector in Alberta is a vital pillar of the province’s economy. It sustains rural communities, generates employment opportunities, and contributes significantly to the province’s GDP. Alberta’s farmers produce a diverse range of agricultural products, including grains, livestock, oilseeds, vegetables, and fruits. They not only feed our local population but also play a crucial role in meeting the growing global demand for high-quality, sustainable food. Their hard work and dedication contribute to Alberta’s reputation as a reliable source of agricultural excellence.

Alberta’s farmers are not just producers of food; they are also stewards of the land. They understand the significance of sustainable farming practices and strive to strike a delicate balance between productivity and environmental conservation. Through responsible land management, soil conservation, water management, and the adoption of innovative technologies, they ensure that future generations will inherit Continued on page 11

Farming is full of challenges! To prevent these critters from destroying their crops, farmers use various scare tactics to encourage them to seek food elsewhere. Here are a few.

Living in the countryside has many charms, such as wide-open spaces, affordable housing and clean air. However, rural homeowners must live alongside agricultural producers, whose activities can be disruptive. Does this sound familiar? Here are a few ideas for living in harmony with noisy tractors and the smell of manure.

• Starting guns. Starting guns are commonly used to scare away migratory birds. The gun produces a loud, shot-like sound, sending a signal to geese and other birds that they’re not welcome. This method is only used when the risk to crops is high.

ST. JEROME’S SCHOOL

St. Jerome’s School held an in-school grad ceremony on May 25, and continued with their formal graduation on May 27. Students were thrilled to partake in the cap and gown ceremony and have a chance to celebrate with the whole school.

Things kicked-off with the school

St. Jerome’s Grad

prayer, O’Canada, and the School song.

Principal Allan Chase said, “This is the official start to grad week and got started as a way to involve the other children, making it so much more meaningful. I taught almost all of you and coached a lot as well. It never ceases to amaze me how you’ve changed as you’ve grown up. You’re journey at St. Jerome’s is unique to you, but I hope

you understand that we are a family and you are a part of it. Be the best person, Christian, and Spartan you can be.

“Thanks to all of you who have assisted at various events throughout the year. We can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings for you. Thank you for being a part of our school community. Going forward, please know how much we care for you. Good luck and

remember, once a Spartan – always a Spartan.”

Mrs. Williams emceed the event and noted that some of the grad class had been there a short time, while others started there during Brighter Beginnings. “You’ve become great role models for the younger students. Celebrate, and be proud of your accomplishments,” said Williams.

May all your dreams come true!

The Significance Of Celebrating Seniors’ Week

and achievements of our senior citizens. While it may be easy to overlook or underestimate the impact seniors have on our communities, it is essential to highlight their significance and honour their invaluable presence. This editorial aims to shed light on why it is crucial to celebrate seniors during Seniors’ Week, emphasizing the immense value they bring to our society.

Our senior population is a treasure trove of wisdom and experience. These individuals have weathered various life challenges, witnessed significant historical events, and acquired invaluable knowledge over the years. Celebrating seniors during Seniors’ Week offers an opportunity to tap into their wealth of wisdom and learn from their experiences. By acknowledging and respecting their knowledge, we foster intergenerational learning, ensuring that our heritage is preserved and future generations benefit from their invaluable insights.

Seniors play a pivotal role in fostering community cohesion. Their active participation in various community orga nizations, volunteer work, and mentor ing programs brings people together and strengthens the social fabric of our

communities. During Seniors’ Week, we have a chance to celebrate their contributions and recognize their efforts in making our community a better place to live. By doing so, we acknowledge their tireless dedication to community building and inspire others to follow in their footsteps, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility.

It is crucial to acknowledge the significant economic contributions that seniors make in our community. Many seniors continue to work beyond retirement age, either by choice or necessity. They bring a wealth of experience, skills, and knowledge to the workforce, contributing to the growth and development of various industries. By celebrating seniors during Seniors’ Week, we shed light on their continued economic impact, challenging age-related stereotypes and emphasizing their ongoing value to the labor market.

Health and Well-being: Seniors’ wellbeing and quality of life are paramount considerations in our society. Celebrating seniors during Seniors’ Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about their unique healthcare needs and to advocate for policies and programs that promote healthy aging. By shining

a spotlight on the importance of senior care and support, we foster a culture that respects and values the health and well-being of our seniors, ensuring they receive the care, resources, and respect they deserve.

Social isolation and loneliness can significantly impact the mental and physical health of seniors. Celebrating seniors during Seniors’ Week provides an occasion to combat this issue by emphasizing the importance of social connection and inclusivity. By organizing events, activities, and initiatives that promote interaction and inclusivity, we foster a sense of belonging for seniors in our communities. This helps reduce social isolation, boosts mental well-being, and reinforces the idea that seniors are cherished members of society.

As we prepare to celebrate Seniors’ Week, it is crucial to recognize and honour the role that seniors play in our communities. If you have a senior in your life whether it is a mother, father, aunt, uncle, employer, etc., be sure to take the time out of your busy life and let them know how much they are appreciated. The seniors around us are the backbone of our communities!

Growth And Learning: A Family Business

Lakeland College

Submitted

There is a certain degree of comfort that comes from knowing where your food comes from. Sisters and fellow Lakeland alumni Jordy Howlett and Jacy Spreen are determined to help demystify the process with the help of their mother, Sheila, and their farm-to-table shop, Mama Sheila’s Farm Store.

Located on their farm in Parkland County, Alta. the shop sells farm-fresh products, as well as other locallysourced handmade goods. It began as an agribusiness assignment for Howlett, who completed the program in 2021.

Planting the seed

After completing Lakeland’s crop techno logy diploma program in 2020, Howlett continued her studies in agribusiness. The seed for her family’s new enterprise grew out of a group project in

2021, where Howlett was tasked to develop a business plan.

“It was right in the midst of COVID-19 and people really wanted to know where their food was coming from,” Howlett explains. “The other girls in my group and I thought it would be a great idea to make a business plan to give people what they want. So, we did our plan on a farm store.”

The Class of 2020 and 2021 grad went back to her family’s farm and shared the idea with her mother and sister.

“We already had cows, pigs and chickens,” Howlett says. “We already produce our own food for ourselves. Why not just produce more to give people good food? It would be the sort of business that fills the gap between you and where your food comes from. So many people don’t get to see where food comes from, they just go to the grocery store. But with

us, you can visit our farm, see where your cows, chickens or pigs come from. They go from our farm to the butcher in Barrhead and then to our farm store.”

“It started out as a conversation,” Spreen recalls. “Jordy brought up the business plan for a hypothetical store and said, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be crazy if we did this?’”

Watching It grow

Spreen credits Lakeland College’s “learning and growth mindset” with inspiring her to set her sights higher and look at the bigger picture – which helped when the idea of the farm store was suggested.

She came to the college determined to spend two years earning her diploma in child and youth care counselling before entering the workforce after graduating in 2019. An instructor at Lakeland inspired her to keep learning.

“They planted the seed and said they thought I’d be a really good fit in the social services field,” Spreen explains. “When it came time to graduate, I thought, ‘What’s two more years?’ I wanted to continue expanding my knowledge and growth.”

She spent two more years at MacEwan University, graduating with a degree in child and youth care. Afterwards, she began a career in social services.

It was that same learning and growth philosophy that had Spreen jumping at the chance to try something new – entering into business with her sister and her mother.

“Lakeland just plants that seed to see what else is out there, to keep growing, to keep learning,” Spreen says. “To not be scared to try new things and to put yourself out there. When my sister brought up the business plan, it was just like, ‘Let’s give it a try.’”

Ready for harvest

Mama Sheila’s Farm Store opened in April 2021. “We provide beef, chicken, pork and eggs,” Howlett says. “Other local vendors bring in their items as well. It’s going pretty well.”

Spreen explains, “It’s definitely been a learning curve for us. It’s been really helpful that Jordy has so much knowledge from her Lakeland experience. She’s teaching us how to apply what she learned in the agribusiness program. We’ve learned so much about how small businesses function in the industry and the demand for farm-totable products.”

“That’s the important part,” Howlett agrees. “We really wanted to be able to give good food back to our local community. We were raised on good food like this.”

This past fall, Howlett’s business plan came full circle as the farm hosted animal science technology diploma students from Lakeland who stopped by for a tour.

“It was so amazing,” says Howlett. “It’s great to see that a business plan that started at Lakeland came to life and then we were able to bring Lakeland students back to it so they could see the finished product. It really makes you proud of what you’ve made and the instructors that helped you do it.”

Sowing future success

Even as they stay busy with Mama Sheila’s Farm Store, neither Howlett nor Spreen have forgotten their other ambitions. In addition to her work at the shop, Spreen continues to work full time. She is a therapeutic support navigator for CASA Mental Health, which provides mental health services to Albertans ages three to 18 and their families. Spreen assists families as they transition back into the community after accessing intensive therapies offered through the agency.

Along with behind-the-scenes financial work and customer service at the shop, Howlett has continued her studies. She’s completing Lakeland’s bachelor of agriculture technology program. She is finishing her practicum, working with the Pan-Canadian Smart Farm Network, using weather stations and smart maps to track in-field variability.

The network shares data and expertise with farmers, industry and developers to better help in the use and development of agriculture technologies.

“I wanted to try something different,” Howlett says. “The agriculture technology degree is new and I want to use it to find something new.” That need to put themselves out there and try something new was a seed planted at Lakeland College, Spreen suggests.

“Lakeland is encouraging, telling me there’s more out there,” Spreen says. “That growth and learning mindset, that’s really helped me – helped us – in our personal careers and with the store.”

I am a sweet and playful young cat who cannot wait to get into her forever home! I enjoy lounging around on fuzzy blankets as well as playing with toys, especially ones with feathers! I do not get along with other cats. I have not been tested with dogs but I'm sure I could get used to one with a proper introduction and time to adjust.

If you would like to meet me then be sure to call the shelter and make an appointment to come in!

Buffalo Trail Public Schools is excited to celebrate and learn about the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Indigenous peoples during National Indigenous History Month in June. As a school division committed to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and reconciliation, we have compiled a collection of Indigenous resources on our BTPS website for people to use to learn more about Indigenous history and culture:

• Aboriginal Peoples of Alberta: yesterday, today, and tomorrow, provides a glimpse into the culture, history, issues, and future opportunities of Indigenous Peoples.

• The Indigenous Canada website provides an extensive collection of educational resources on Indigenous history, culture, and contemporary issues. From interactive courses to podcasts and videos, this website offers a wealth of information to deepen your understanding of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

• Indigenous Relations by the Government of Alberta: The Indigenous Relations website by the Government of Alberta provides access to resources and information on the diverse Indigenous peoples and cultures in Alberta. This website offers a range of educational resources such as videos, reports, and publications, providing insight into the history, culture, and contemporary issues of Indigenous peoples in the province.

• Empowering the Spirit includes educational resources to deepen understanding of First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives on literacy and numeracy.

• Indigenous Place Names Map of Alberta by the University of Alberta: The University of Alberta has created an interactive map that showcases Indigenous place names in Alberta. This resource not only highlights the

Grade 7 orientation to JR Robson took place on May 29. The Grade 6 students walked over to JR and met with teachers. They also got a tour of the school. Thanks so much to JR Robson staff for providing a day of learning the ropes for junior high.

On May 30, we were fortunate to have the Dufflebag Theatre in our school. They are a touring troupe from Ontario that started up 31 years ago. Marcus, Nicole and Ester put on the production of Peter Pan for our entertainment. They chose four members of our school out of the audience to help with the play. Mrs. Paige played Mrs. Darling, Avaya Miles played Wendy Darling, Logan Freeman played Peter Pan, and Ethan Croke played Captain Hook. All four did a superb job.

We had our assembly on May 31. Madison and Sophia started the assembly with the reading of our Land Acknowledgement. Fat Cat joined us and, together with students and staff, danced up a storm to the song Celebration. We thank Fat Cat and the Vermilion Credit Union for being a part of our assemblies every month. Mr. Haslehurst acknowledged top readers in AR. Mr. Harvey introduced his Gamers’ Club members and told a bit about that club. Mrs. Joa told students about the upcoming AR celebration day on June 19. The assembly ended with a fun activity. In AR so far this year, students have accumulated 14153 points. In the month of May, they earned 1255.7 points, with a total of 1098 books and 5,562,977 words being read. In Grades 2-3, the highest points were obtained by Harlen Miller (14 points)

from 3A. Taylor Maxwell from 6B reached 34.4 points in May, which landed him the certificate for the highest points in Division 2. We would like to congratulate both boys on a job well done.

Christy Jordan-Fenton came to VES on June 1 to give an hour presentation to each grade in our school. Christy is the author of four books – When I Was Eight, Fatty Legs, A Stranger at Home, and Not My Girl. She got her books’ inspiration from the grandmother of her children – Margaret Pokiak-Fenton (an Inuvialuit woman who told her residential school story to Christy). We thank Christy for this amazing experience.

Grade 5 and 6 students were fortunate to have a half day field trip on June 1. Grade 5 students met at the Provincial Park with Brendan Ganton, an instruc -

tor with the Environmental Sciences program at Lakeland College. He spent the afternoon teaching students about wetlands. Grade 6 students walked north of the school and met with Robin LagroixMcLean, another instructor with the Lakeland College Environmental Sciences program. Robin instructed the students about trees and forests. Both of these field trips fit perfectly with the science curriculum from each grade. We would like to thank for Brendan and Robin for this wonderful experience.

Dates to Remember: June 8 – Grade 3/4-Grade 6 Field Trip; June 9 – Grade 1-3 Field Trip; June 19 – AR Family Celebration Day and Picnic; June 22 – KB Grad Ceremony; June 23 – KA Grad Ceremony; June 26 – Grade 6 Farewell; June 27 – Students’ Last Day.
