Lakeside Pharmacy officially opened its doors to the public on March 23, but it wasn’t until April 26 that the pharmacy celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The event was attended by local dignitaries including Mayor Greg Throndson, Deputy Mayor Paul Conlon and council members who presented a welcome plaque to one of the pharmacy’s owners Kim Clarke.

Located on the south side of Midtown Medical Clinic building, the

pharmacy is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. With its convenient location, customers can easily see their doctor and then stop by the pharmacy without having to go elsewhere. This is especially beneficial for those with mobility issues, families with young children, and seniors who have alternate modes of transportation such as one of the local handi-vans.

Co-owned by Kim Clarke, Tim Hines, and Joel Lapointe, Lakeside Pharmacy provides customers with all the supplies of a regular drugstore,

but in smaller quantities. Moreover, if the pharmacy doesn’t have an item in stock, they can order it with next-day delivery in most instances. Lakeside Pharmacy offers free delivery and compliance packaging to Vermilion and surrounding areas.

Clarke, who grew up south of Islay, has been a pharmacist for 13 years.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to own my own pharmacy, so when given the opportunity I was excited for the challenge” Clarke said.

For the grand opening week, the pharmacy offered a 20% discount on all items in the store, and attend -

ees could enter the draw for a $200 gift card, which will be drawn on Wednesday, May 3.

Additionally, transferring pharmacy files to Lakeside Pharmacy is an effortless process. Customers who wish to switch can simply notify the pharmacy and they will take care of the rest.

Deputy Mayor Paul Conlon expressed his excitement about having the pharmacy in the same building as the clinic, stating that it’s great for seniors in the community, especially for those with limited mobility.

The Rotary Club Annual Sale A Huge Success

The Vermilion Rotary Club Annual Garage Sale was held on April 27 and 28 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and April 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Vermilion Curling Rink West Door at the Vermilion Fair Grounds. This year’s sale was particularly meaningful, as it was held in memory of long-time Rotary Club member and the annual event Committee Chairperson, Brenda Lee, who passed away in February.

The event was a huge success, with a wide variety of items for sale, excluding clothing, TV’s or entertainment centres. The prices were reasonable as attendees were asked to make offers on items they were interested in purchasing, and many people came out to support the cause and find a bargain.

The first $5000 raised at the sale will

go towards the New Flooring Project for the Vermilion Senior Centre, with the remaining proceeds being reinvested in the community, benefiting many facets of Vermilion and surrounding area. Profits from the sale supports: youth programs, sport activities, leadership opportunities, support and care for seniors, community infrastructure and cultural organizations.

The Vermilion Rotary Club Annual Garage Sale is an event that brings together the community in support of a good cause. It provides an opportunity for people to donate their gently used items, find a bargain, and connect with their neighbours.

The Rotary Club members, their spouses, family members, local youth partners, and Friends of Rotary take pride in organizing the sale each year, and the sense of camaraderie and community spirit is

evident throughout the event.

Overall, the Vermilion Rotary Club Annual Garage Sale was a huge success.

The Rotary Club is grateful for the support they received and the many partners from Vermilion who contributed to the sales success such as: The Town of Vermilion, Vermilion Agricultural Society, Lakeland Mall and the Curling Club who all provided tables to receive and display the donated merchandise, as well the Vermilion Fire Department volunteers who help clean-up.

“I am amazed at the number of volunteers who also spend countless hours helping with the sale. They have spent in some instances days cleaning, organizing and setting up the donated items. This year we also had people volunteer who haven’t volun -

teered with us for the sale before, and did so this year because it is in memory of our dear Rotary member Brenda Lee,” commented Committee Chair, Scott Webb.

The Rotary will once again be partnering with other organizations to disperse leftover items following the sale to ensure the community’s usable donations are shared with other nonprofit organizations.

Shoppers attending the sale could also support another local organization The Vermilion Heritage Museum by purchasing either a hamburger or a smokie and drink for $6.

Last year the organization raised $40,000 and this year they have surpassed the amount, raising a whopping total of $54,319.

Primus Meet & Greet With Local Businesses

Primus executives met with several local business representatives, thanking them for their support and providing an opportunity for open communication. Some attendees discussed their satisfaction with the improved service, while others who may be interested in signing up and still had concerns were able to approach the company directly.

Jim Dawson, the Primus Vice President of Western Canada, said their partnership with Alberta Broadband Networks will help them achieve the goal to have fibre internet delivered to every residence and business in the Town of Vermilion.

“In a smaller town like Vermilion there is no better marketing than word of mouth, so the best thing we can do is provide a good service; one they can tell their neighbours and their friends about. With any fibre project you can run into some operational and process issues that don’t run perfectly out of the gate. This opportunity allows us to mitigate them and ensure a smooth experience going forward,” said Dawson.

Primus Account Manager, Jason Hackman said, “This is a huge opportunity for our organization. Any time you can be part of something from scratch, you can have an impact on people’s lives and how they operate. Rural Alberta has really suffered from a lack of broadband; even those close to Edmonton who have

were primarily related to the availability of the service.

“The initial roll-out is one size fits all, but now we are able to customize service where needed for higher dedicated bandwidth speeds, managed Wi-Fi networks, and phone service. Some drivers that may encourage businesses to want to sign up could be cost savings, business efficiency, and scalability,” said Dawson.

Businesses can now choose 200MB/s, 500MB/s or 1GB/s options.

Hackman said, “We’re here to try to solve business problems; this is a longterm relationship and we want to help businesses maximize their potential.”

President of Pentacon Utility Services Inc., Chris Parchewsky, said they initially signed up for A-Net during their trial run so were one of the first businesses to get fibre internet to their shop.

“We’re on the edge of town and originally had a Telus Hub and it was too slow. It relied on cell service so if cell service was down that day, we couldn’t work. We do team meetings on Zoom, as well as online safety training and communication. With approximately 10 employees with people on their phones and five or six on computers, it was jammed at 15 MB/sec.” said Parchewsky. “We got the middle of the road package from Primus and are now receiving 500MB/s of matching upload and download speeds in every inch of our shop. Everything is seamless; there is no missing text messages at the back

any type of computers, tv’s, or internet streaming services there is no buffering. We’ve had nothing but good things to say. With fibre being the way of the future and being the only fibre in town, it makes sense to have it for residential and commercial in order to keep up with all of the advancements in the future.”

Businesses can currently get up to 1 GB upload and download speeds, and they are even looking at developing a 2.5 GB option in the future. Hackman said if you have people uploading large files (such as blueprints) back and forth this will make a huge difference. A-Net Director of Commercial Operation, German Figueroa, said they will be bringing in more advanced Enterprise Class services for larger organizations as well which will allow more reliable, more secure networks.

“A managed network makes sense for

a business with approximately 15 users because then you don’t have to spend money on IT. We can manage the system and make sure it is up; some things can be reset remotely,” said Hackman.

Dawson noted that in a managed network they would oversee components such as internet, switches, firewall, Wi-Fi, and security. They are looking to work with more people in the community in the future to help with installations and support issues.

Town of Vermilion CAO Kevin Lucas said, “Having Alberta Broadband and Primus here is proving that this partnership with the Town of Vermilion is solid, and that we will have a lifelong relationship with them moving forward.”

Any businesses in Vermilion interested in registering to receive Primus service, can call Jason Hackman directly at 780-701-5578.

When the wind whispers secret messages, Think of me for I am there.

When raindrops rest gently on your cheek, Think of me for I am there.

When the sun kisses your face with warmth, Think of me for I am there.

I am a part of you and you of me, Death only masks our earthly forms.

No longer earthbound and weary of limb, My spirit soars and i am free! It only seems that I am far away, But I am with you each and every day! Some day you and I will reunite, With rain and wind, with sky and light!

New Myrnam School – Spring Showcase

Students were overjoyed to share their ongoing projects (such as transforming an old school bus into a net zero tiny home) with their parents, members of the community, and area dignitaries during the New Myrnam School’s Spring Showcase on April 27.

Dignitaries included MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, Myrnam Mayor Donna Rudolph, County of Two Hills Reeve Don Gulayec and Councillor Murray Phillips. Representing Inside Education, Executive Director Steve McIsaac, and Education Program Lead Laura Pekkola were also in attendance.

Principal, Danielle Eriksen, said the Spring Showcase features “How we do things differently here with our students” We get a lot of support from our partners, and for those that are less familiar, this is a way to show people what is happening in their backyard. The children are immensely proud and this is a celebration of their work.”

With a declining population and declining enrolment six years ago, a vision began through past teacher and current Assistant Superintendent, Keith Gamblin, that has become a shared vision. By doing things this way, Assistant Principal Robert Tymofichuk said the children become highly engaged.

“This isn’t your normal school. I’ve been teaching since 1990, and this is really personalized; it’s a teacher’s dream. With the projects, there is always something they can be interested in. When your realize what can happen from education you’ll never go back,” said Tymofichuk. “I always said this is not a school, it is a family; the children look out for each other.”

New Myrnam School oversees Myrnam School and the outreach and homeschool centre(MOHC). Now their enrolment is over 200 students and even have some that overlook the Nile River in Egypt while taking

class online.

Located night next door to the school, the Construction and Technology Education Centre (CTEC) is owned by the village, and the school owns a six kilowatt grid tied solar ray on top of the building. Throughout the past six years they have undertaken substantial projects and Eriksen said, “The projects are student led, inquiry based, and hands on. Students go on field trips, research and determine what would work for the school.”

In year one, they created a greenhouse, wind turbine and bioreactor from scratch; in year two they received an Energy Champion award; and in year three they wanted to reduce their carbon footprint so they created a hydroponic system. In year four they converted a fleet of golf carts destined for the landfill into renewable energy vehicles; in year five they began converting an old school bus into a net zero tiny home; and in year six, they began researching how to turn the CTEC facility itself into a net zero electricity facility with a minimal budget.

The students have built raised beds, a green house, and an Eco classroom. The children came up with a thermal storage system made from water tanks for their greenhouse .

“It worked so well that they had to come up with ways to reduce the heat, as it got to be 52 degrees Celsius in the winter,” said Tymofichuk. “The Eco classroom was kiddesigned and kid-constructed, and we had more students showing up on snow days to help with it than regular days. Vaulted trusses were designed using Trigonometry.”

Their hydroponics system started with one tower made by the junior high environmental sustainability class out of a small model design. Then they opted to use space blankets to reflect the light. Now they are able to use less light and get by with half the amount of electricity.

“After word got out in the community, $10,000 in donations came in and they

were able to expand the project to three towers complete with an auto-doser to test the pH levels as the plants grow, as well as water and feed them. In May, the students will be mentoring kids from the County of Paintearth who want to create something similar. This system uses no soil, no pesticides, and has no insects so it produces extremely healthy food,” said Tymofichuk.

They also have a greenhouse sale planned for June 1. The high school offers horticulture classes as well as a Green Certificate Program through Lakeland College. Students learn the nutrient requirements for each plant, and when there is a problem (such as when the hoses get filled up with roots), they figure it out.

New this year is cosmetology being offered at the high school level. They got some used rusty chairs and the students fixed them up. One is even doing fashion studies.

In the main shop of the CTEC building, is where the children did their frame up restoration for the old golf carts. The original batteries corroded the metal, but the new ones have absorbed glass mat batteries all sealed with no off gassing. They reupholster the seats, learn welding skills, and go from something disposed to having a solar panel on top.

“On a full charge normal ones have six batteries, but the students did endurance testing and realized with three batteries they could reduce the cost of ownership and still go eight kilometres per charge. They sold two to the County of St. Paul who use them at campgrounds and are extremely pleased with them. These golf carts are quiet and because there is a solar panel on top, they can charge while parked or driving,” said Tymofichuk.

Eriksen said Inside Education provided a lot of the funding for their projects so a couple years ago, a couple high school students attended their Cultivate Conference and started creating a model to a scale of a chicken coop.

At the time, the village did not allow livestock, so the students consulted with the village to try to change the bylaws. The coop is now complete with a manure tray that can be pulled out for cleaning. They are currently waiting to hear back as they were the first to submit a livestock license with the village in order to have chickens in the schoolyard.

A stationary electric bike is set up so that for every minute of pedalling it produces one minute of charge for an LED light bulb or phone charger.

“We take it for granted. You learn to appreciate electricity,” said Tymofichuk as the elevated effort to keep it powered they would not be able to maintain for long.

Some students are working on restoring antique snowmobiles.

With the varying projects over the years, students have practised communicating with utility companies, and have even learned how to write grants.

“These children have really gotten out of

their shell,” said Tymofichuk.

Wanting to build a net zero tiny home, when the students started searching for a bus to purchase, they were grateful to have central office end up donating this one. The bus is mechanically fine, but cosmetically damaged, with holes in the door panel, holes in the fender, and the front bumper twisted. Students learned to weld, took a sledge hammer to straighten it out, they used J-B weld, sanded and painted the exterior. The counter top and cupboards were donated, and students built chairs with storage for the batteries. There will be a solar panel on the bus, and a carbon neutral stove will use wood energy for heat.

“They even built a bathroom area, and yes, even that started with a model. After trying a jigsaw and getting a rough circular edge, the students were not satisfied and opted to use a CNC router,” said Tymofichuk.

The bed folds up, and they placed an LED light fixture on the side to not take away headroom. The bus completion may be into next year as they will still need to configure meters for the solar panel inside the bus.

Just in case they didn’t have enough projects on the go, during this past winter junior high students were challenged to move the Eco classroom to a new location down the alley. They brainstormed how to move it with a skid and levers and roll it on fence posts. They created a makeshift tow rope from a tug of war rope and pushed and pulled, moving the fence posts until it found it’s new home.

The CTEC is used mainly by junior and senior high students but Grade 5/6 even have a shop class of their own, building welcome signs, soapbox carts etc. While learning about electricity, they made mini 9V battery cars and one even made a drone. They are shown the tools and the safety to do the job, but select items they want to make. One student is making a coat rack with a bear climbing up a tree, and Tymofichuk said, “For someone doing that kind of cutting, she could be a heck of a wood worker one day. They are the most amazing children; I’m mind boggled by their potential.”

With warm weather just around the corner, salads start to take a staring role. There are many things I love about this salad. A healthy micro biome is where much of our immune system is housed. Our microbiome flourishes with a variety of foods, especially foods with fibre. It is recommended that we eat at least 50 different foods every week. This salad is loaded with fiber, beneficial antioxidants and 15 different food types. Each ingredient in this salad has many health benefits. Both red peppers and limes are full of immune boosting vitamin C. When selecting rice, converted rice has more nutrients than plain white rice, but brown

Meeting the Parents

A while back, our eighteenyear-old daughter, Aliyah, summoned her courage and announced she had a boyfriend. Naturally, we were expecting this to happen – one day – maybe somewhere in the distant future when she turned 35. Sigh.

In any case, Aliyah was a little nervous about broaching this news, then anxious all over again when the day came to introduce him to us in person. However, we like Arron, and all is well.

It’s a tricky business to introduce a boyfriend or girlfriend to family members, and I’m sure Aliyah also felt a bit awkward the first time she met Arron’s parents. Likewise, I was embarrassed when I met the people who would become my future in-laws.

However, I was a bit of a nut.

I mean, yes, I was, and still am, a simple country girl from the sticks. Still, there was a time in my life when my nickname was “Wheels” I rode a motorbike, wore a black leather jacket, and had purple hair.

Let’s face it: none of these qualities makes a good first impression on parents.

Maybe if I’d driven sedately up the driveway in a non-descript sedan, or caught the Greyhound into town and walked primly to their door, or even had my father drop me off in a grain truck loaded with seed oats, I’d have had a chance. But no, I had to rumble into their driveway slouched low over the handlebars of a street bike with muffler issues.

Even after that, if I’d have worn a heavy

rice is the most nutritious. Black beans are rich in anti-oxidants. Black beans are a good source of molybdenum, folate, fiber, manganese, and tryptophan. The vegetable protein fiber in black beans helps stabilize blood sugar, lowers blood cholesterol levels, and reduces the risk of both heart disease and colon cancer. The protein in beans is largely incomplete, with very little of the essential amino acid methionine. Brown rice is a good source of methionine, and when eaten with black beans, creates complete protein. Brown rice, which is considered a whole grain, is also an excellent source of manganese, selenium, magnesium, and fiber. Whole grains are part of a healthy diet and have been shown to reduce the risk of cardio vascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. Corn is full of health benefits. Corn contains the antioxidant carotenoids

lutein and zeaxanthin which promote eye health and help prevent macular degeneration in the eyes. Corn contains a variety of B Vitamins, vitamin A, potassium, and insoluble fibre. The fiber in corn feeds your gut microbiome and helps you stay full longer. Nutrients in corn increase blood flow, lower the absorption of cholesterol, and help to regulate insulin. The phenolic phytochemicals in corn help regulate insulin release and absorption.

Cumin is beneficial in releasing digestive enzymes, and may help prevent heartburn. Cilantro not only adds the fresh taste of Mexico, but it aids in detoxing heavy metals out of the body. This salad uses only real food, no additives, and it is full of all the mentioned health benefits and many more.

my mother’s tightly around my throat and complained of laryngitis, or pulled one of Dad’s, “Charolais Beef is Best,” caps low over my ears, I could have eased into their midst a little better. But no, I dragged a helmet from my head, revealing straggly, grape-colored locks. It was the “punk” era; what can I say?

If I’d have thought for two minutes, I could’ve slipped into some sensible footwear and a cashmere cardigan with lace trim, or popped on a brightly patterned muumuu worn by moms in the 70s; or even donned some filthy calving overalls Dad kept in the barn, anything would’ve been better. But no, I pranced in wearing enormous boots and a leather jacket, with a scrape up one arm where I’d skidded my bike down a gravel road.

Thankfully, the whole “Wheels” nickname wasn’t acknowledged. It wasn’t like I had it emblazoned across my back in

flames or anything, so I was safe, for now.

Foolishly, none of this concerned me until I strode into the kitchen where my boyfriend’s parents were visiting his sister and her children. They’d heard me arrive (the whole neighborhood had) and were now waiting with trepidation.

There was a stunned silence as I entered the room. The innocent youngsters playing happily near the door took one horrified look and flung themselves under the dinner table, cowering in fear. Despite requests to “Come out and meet the nice biker lady” and offers of warm cookies and milk, they would not emerge. Nothing could persuade them to stand in the presence of so dreadful an apparition, and they clung to the table legs with tiny ashen faces. That was my first clue that

We are amid our latest election in Alberta, so throughout the election campaign I will be sharing stories from the past in the area regarding elections.

This time, we are looking at 1905, the very first election in Alberta’s history. This election was held on Nov. 9, 1905, and it was won by the Liberal Party.

In fact, the Liberal Party ruled Alberta from 1905 to 1921. The party has never returned to power since then.

The 1905 Election in Vermilion

This election was important because it was the first one to be held in Alberta, and those elected would vote on important issues such as establishing either Calgary or Edmonton as the capital of the province.

At the time, Vermilion was its own electoral district, and one of 25 created in the 1905 election. The district existed from 1905 to 1971, when it was changed to Vermilion-Viking. During that period, the district supported the Liberals for many years, electing them from 1905 to 1921, and again from 1955 to 1959.

The candidates in the area were Matthew McCauley for the Liberals and

Frank Fane for the Conservatives.

McCauley was able to easily defeat Fane, taking 673 votes and 73 per cent of the votes, to 248 won by Frank Fane, who took 26.93 per cent of the vote.

With that win, Matthew McCauley was elected to the Legislature to represent the area. He had co-founded the Edmonton Board of Trade, served in the Home Guard during the 1885 North West Resistance and was the first mayor of Edmonton from 1892 to 1895. He never really lived in the area, and was far more associated with Edmonton.

Nonetheless, he won and played a

vital role in making Edmonton the capital of the province.

He only served until 1909 and then became the warden of the Edmonton Penitentiary, serving until 1912 when he moved to B.C. to be a fruit farmer. He died in 1930.

Happy Harmonizers, TnT, And A Touch Of Brass Come Together For Spring Concert

On April 24, the Vermilion Seniors Centre came alive with the sounds of music as the Happy Harmonizers, TnT, and a Touch of Brass held their Spring Concert. The event drew a large attendance, with music enthusiasts from all around the area eager to enjoy the performances.

The Happy Harmonizers, a local choir group, kicked off the concert by performing O Canada which led them into their first set. They delighted the audience with their melodious voices as they performed popular songs such as Rambling Rose, Sweet Violets, Tumbling Tumbleweed, and The Rose. The group, directed by Irene Smith and accompanied by pianist Glen Teasdale, left the crowd happy with their harmonies.

Next up was the Touch of Brass Hand bell group, who performed the second

and last set. Their renditions of Morning Bell, Chopsticks on Hand bells, With a Joyful Heart, and Early One Morning just to name a few were exceptionally performed and had the audience entertained. The group was directed by Bonnie Bauer, and their performance was a testament to their passion for music.

The third set was performed by the TnT group, who entertained the audience with their rendition of Morning Has Broken, Unchanged Melody, and Ain’t She Sweet. The group was accompanied by pianist Mary Pries, and their performance was well-received by the audience.

Admission to the concert was by cash or food donation to the Vermilion Food Bank, and the generosity of the attendees was heartwarming. The event was not only a musical success but also a means of giving back to the community.

After the performances, a delight -

ful finger food lunch was served, with Gordon Hills MCing the event. It was an opportunity for the attendees to mingle and share their love of music with each other.

Overall, the Spring Concert was a fantastic success, and the Happy Harmonizers, TNT, and a Touch of Brass showcased their talent and passion for music.

Back by popular demand the Mental Health First Aid - Basic course was held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on April 27-28.

Leader Derek Collins said last year VIBE was instrumental in bringing the first session in, while this year the event was sponsored by the Town of Vermilion, FCSS, and the County of Vermilion River.

“I was not directly involved in the first one, but I did hear that it was very well received and had a waiting list. It was that interest that made us think about offering another one,” said Collins. “Many of us will come across someone, a co-worker, a family member or a community member who is experiencing serious mental health distress. This course provides some understanding and skills to provide support and connect the person to the appropriate help.”

‘Mental Health First Aid’

Just like First Aid is important, he said so is Mental Health First Aid. When people see someone hurt they take First Aid to know how to support them and get them to help, and Mental Health First Aid training is another way to do that as well.

“Helping people has been an important part of my career. I took my Masters in Educational Psychology so that I could provide better support for my students. Through my work I have also found it is very important to support those who do the helping. This training is just one way to help others understand mental health issues and build stronger connections,” said Collins. The bulk of the presentation covers the application of the Mental Health First Aid approach, but he touched on substance abuse disorders, mood disorders including suicide intervention, and psychotic disorders.

If you recognize someone in mental distress, he said the first step is to help

the person find a safe place and to let them know that you are there to help them to the next step. Often the next step he said, is some form of professional help whether it be a phone line or making an appointment with a professional.

The session had 25 participants in order to help facilitate more open communication. Collins said with that size it is easier to facilitate group discussions, be able to address questions and explore issues. Because there has been so much interest, he certainly thinks they will be offering this again in the future.

Anyone can be a mental health first aider. When asked what the most important things for people struggling with their mental health to remember are he said, “There is help available and please reach out and let someone know. We seek out others in times of joy and celebration, we need to seek out others in the tough times too.”

National Education Week

Education Week is an annual event observed in Canada, dedicated to celebrating the importance of education and

its role in shaping the future of the country. The event is held in the first week of May.

The purpose of Education Week is to recognize the contributions of educators,

administrators, parents, and students in shaping the education system. It is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of education and to promote its role in building a strong and prosperous nation.

According to the Alberta Teachers Association Education Week was first observed in Alberta in 1928, making it one of the oldest celebrations of education in the world. The event was initially known as Alberta School Week and was held December 2-8 and was intended to promote public awareness of the importance of education and the remarkable things happening in Alberta Schools. Over the years, the event has evolved and is now recognized as “Education Week” and celebrated in all provinces and terri-

tories of Canada.

The theme of Education Week varies each year, with a focus on a particular aspect of education. For instance, the theme for 2023 is ‘Learning Uplifts All.’

- Education Week is an excellent opportunity to advocate for public education and to:

- Illustrate the important role that schools play in communities

- Assure taxpayers that public funds are being put to good use

- Invite the public into classrooms for first-hand experiences

- Highlight the partnership between teachers, parents and students

- Celebrate the contribution that all staff and volunteers make in the school.

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and choosing the right venue is crucial to creating the perfect atmosphere and experience for you and your guests. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to find the perfect venue that meets your needs and expectations. In this article, I will provide some tips on how to find the best venue for your wedding. I would consider this a known topic for me as I have done it twice. Lol. The first time it was a tad bit rushed as I was supposed to get married in August and ended up getting married in April at my Dad’s house as his health was failing. The second time, I will admit the plans didn’t work out either; as we were going to have a backyard wedding until the weather started looking iffy and I quickly had to switch gears three days before and find an inside venue. So determining the right venue is absolutely a big decision not to take lightly.

Determine your budget

Once you have determined your budget, it is important to determine your wedding style and guest count. Are you looking for an intimate, outdoor wedding or a grand ballroom affair? Will you be inviting a large number of guests, or keeping it small and intimate? Having a clear understanding of your wedding style and guest count will help you narrow down your venue options and ensure that you find a space that can accommodate your needs.

Research venues online

As one of the key components of most weddings, decisions about the cake shouldn’t betors to consider before you order yours.

1. THE NUMBER OF GUESTS

You want to make sure there’s plenty to go

When choosing a wedding venue, it is important to consider its location and accessibility. Is the venue located near your ceremony site or reception area? Is it easily accessible for your guests? Is there ample parking available? Considering these factors will help ensure that your guests can easily make it to your wedding without any issues.

Before you start looking for venues, it is important to determine your budget. Your budget will play a significant role in determining the type of venue you can afford, as well as the services and amenities that you can include in your wedding package. Once you have identified some potential venues, it is important to schedule site visits. This will give you the opportunity to see the space in person and ask any questions you may have. Make sure to take note of the venue’s layout, capacity, and available amenities. It is also important to ask about the venue’s policies on outside vendors, catering options, and other important details like whether or not you can serve alcohol privately, use their bar and drink rates, or if you have to have a dry wedding.

The cake is as much a part of the decor as the flowers. Don’t hesitate to bring a copy of the invitation, colour samples and pictures of the decorations to guide the baker.

Dear Editor, I am writing to express my concern about the recent strike action of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. Currently, I am employed with the Public Service as a Detachment Services Assistant at the Vermilion RCMP Detachment and have experience serving Canadians in various RCMP positions for the last 11 years. As someone who works for, as well as, relies on the services provided by these dedicated individuals I am deeply troubled.

Our Detachment Services Assistants play a critical role in our communities providing support to police officers and ensuring that our RCMP Detachment operates effectively. Often times, the DSA’s take on additional work outside of their job description to ensure police offi -

cers are out serving the community instead of sitting behind a mountain of paperwork. DSA’s pay invoices, take complaints from the public, are faced with extremely graphic and traumatic materials, and sometimes face violence and abuse without any formal training to mitigate these issues. They are the first point of contact when you walk through the RCMP Detachments doors. The absence is being felt by Canadians who rely on their services, including victims of crime who need assistance, and the public who expect timely and efficient service from the RCMP.

One of the key issues that has led to this strike action is the need for a fair wage increase. Every day, Cana dians see that our dollar doesn’t go as far for our basic needs at the grocery

store or the gas station. People are taking on further debt just to survive. The federal government’s current offer to Public Service Employees averages 2.06% - which when factoring in inflation and the rising cost of living is actually a wage cut. The wage proposal from the PSAC union is 4.5%, this works out to an increase of less than $12 a day, or $1.40 an hour. When the food inflation rate for basic groceries has been above 10% for nearly a year, and extra $100 a paycheque can make all the difference for our DSA’s who are struggling - which I believe is an entirely reasonable demand.

We work hard every day to ensure the safety and security of our community. We deserve to be compensated fairly for our efforts. It is crucial for the government to recognize this and take immediate steps to address this issue. As a Canadian, I believe that it is our collective responsibility to support the Public Service Employees who work tirelessly to keep our community safe. I urge the government to take action and provide the necessary support and resources to resolve this strike as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

IN OUR BACKYARD

Impure water can have many unwanted consequences, including bad-tasting drinking water; it can leave a soap scum and rust stains, and can also affect your appliances by breaking down faster.

Superior Water offers residential and commercial water treatment including water softeners, which provide clean, conditioned water for your home, or reverse osmosis, which is compared to bottle quality water right from the taps, and water filtration.

home. Lab animals exposed to very high levels of THMs have an increased risk of cancer and several studies on humans have also found a link between long-term exposure to high levels of chlorination by products and a higher risk of cancer.

Professional water quality testing and analysis is an important step in understanding whether or not the tap water entering your home has toxic chemicals.

Reverse Osmosis can remove the following from your water: Arsenic, Bacteria, Cadmium, Chloride, Chromium-6, Cyanide, Fluoride, Lead, Iron, Manganese, Mercury, Nickel, Nitrates, Perchlorate, Phosphate, Potassium, Selenium, Sodium and Zinc. This works by using a semi- permeable membrane and is then is selective with what it allows to pass through and what it prevents from passing through it. The membranes also prevent many other contaminants from

passing by trapping them. Since water is the less concentrated solution, it seeks to dilute the more concentrated solution; water will pass through the membrane from the lower concentration side to the greater concentration side. This will create an osmotic pressure and will counter the diffusion process exactly and an equilibrium will form.

The process of reverse osmosis will allow water molecules to pass through the membrane while excluding most substances. Alberta’s Government Is Recognizing The Role Ranchers Play In Managing Crown Rangelands

Crown rangeland is public land leased or permitted to ranchers for grazing livestock. The new framework provides clarity about how grazing fits into Crown Land and integrated land management practices.

“Our ranchers have long been stewards of our rangelands, and their input into the creation of this framework and their ongoing efforts with land management are important to supporting livestock production, maintaining healthy ecosystems and creating economic prosperity,” said Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry, Parks and Tourism.

The Rangeland Grazing Framework also provides the agriculture industry with the continued opportunity to use the forage production of the rangelands for graz -

ing while keeping biodiversity top of mind. Alberta’s rangelands have long depended on grazing, with cattle now following in the footsteps of bison to help maintain ecological benefits such as watershed health, carbon sequestration, wildlife habitat, diverse plant and wildlife populations and aesthetic beauty.

“The framework supports the important work of ranchers to sustain and enhance the function and productivity of Crown land rangeland ecosystems in a way that promotes biodiversity and ecological goods and services,” commented Sonya Savage, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

“The Rangeland Grazing Framework is a significant step forward in recognizing the vital role that ranchers play in manag -

Purebred Charolais and

ing Crown rangelands. By providing clarity on grazing practices and emphasizing the importance of biodiversity, the framework ensures that ranchers can continue to produce high-quality beef while upholding Alberta’s reputation for ecological sustainability,” said Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation.

“Grazing dispositions on Crown land are a proven conservation measure, as seen by the long history and the resulting health of the grasslands under grazing leases. The framework supports long-term conservation by solidifying the role of the leaseholder and supporting the partnership between the leaseholder and the province,” said Kyle Forbes, chairman, Alberta Grazing Leaseholders Association.

“The framework recognizes the long-

held essential role that leaseholders have in stewarding Alberta’s Crown rangelands. The framework clearly spells out how grazing fits into Crown land management and helps bring peace of mind to ranchers that future policy will support their farms and their ability to steward Crown rangelands,” said Brodie Haugan, chair, Alberta Beef Producers. Supporting existing rights

The framework supports the existing land use rights of leaseholders and recreationists and places greater emphasis on current legislation and policy.

To reinforce the spirit of the framework and support the ongoing contributions and ranchers, the Rangeland Grazing Framework sets out a process for involving leaseholders when proposed land-use changes are being considered.
