Vermilion’s very own Shaelyn Young has made a bold step into the world of entrepreneurship. On March 27th, the 18-yearold opened the doors to her new business, Studio 04, located in the heart of Vermilion at 4934 50 Ave in the Elevation Boutique building. Members of the Vermilion Town Council were present at the opening ceremony to show their support for Shaelyn, presenting her with a welcome plaque and joining in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Studio 04 specializes in permanent jewelry, such as bracelets, anklets, necklaces, and rings for women, men, and children. Shaelyn received her training from a company in the U.S., where she completed online train-
ing and performed the making of permanent jewelry to become certified.
When asked about her inspiration for starting her own business, Shaelyn shared, “I saw how popular permanent jewelry was on social media and I thought it would be cool to do. I researched it and realized it wasn’t a difficult business to get into, and I always wanted to start my own business.”
The pricing for each permanent jewelry item is based on the length of the 14k gold, gold-filled, or sterling silver chain used and whether or not the client would like a pendant to go on their jewelry. The price can start at $10 and up per inch, with solid gold being an exception.
The welding process used to create permanent jewelry is done with a specialized
welding machine that is designed for fragile metals. The process is safe, as the spark generated during the process is not of high temperature, and the customer will not feel anything during the procedure. There is no risk to the customer, even if their skin comes into contact with the weld point, as the electrode will not generate a spark. The chains used during the process are thin enough to last but not thick enough to cause harm to the wearer in the event that it becomes caught on an object. The jewelry can always be re-welded, and aftercare can be used to maintain the integrity of the link.
While permanent jewelry is designed for everyday wear and can last for months without needing to be cleaned, it is still fine jewelry and not invincible. There are situations where
the jewelry may need to be removed for a medical procedure or MRI. In this event, the jewelry can be re-welded as long as it is properly removed.
Appointments can be made and pricing can be found on Shaelyn’s website, studio04. ca. Young is flexible and can work around the schedules of her clients. “If someone can only do an evening appointment, all they would have to do is contact me, and we can work out a time that works best for them,” said Young.
The opening of Studio 04 has shown that age is just a number when it comes to pursuing one’s dreams. Young’s passion and dedication to her craft have led her to create a business that offers something unique and innovative to the community of Vermilion.

Vermilion & District Rotary Music Festival
The Vermilion & District Rotary Music Festival ran from March 29 to 31st with the showcase performance on April 2. To attend the Festival attendees could enter by giving a silver donation for the Vermilion Food Bank.
Bernie Huedepohl, president of the organization was pleased to be able to welcome the festival back after having disappeared during COVID, but stated, “We are not out of the woods yet” due to lower registration.
Huedepohl noted that while the world of 2023 features a lot of items their greatgrandparents could only dream of, a lot of features have been lost as well.
“Family singing and music making was once a feature of many homes, but it is no longer available in many homes. The singing that was once a feature of church attendance has also fallen away as church attendance has declined. Community singing and playing of shared musical heritage drew us together. Its loss makes us poorer and we, at the Festival, hope to restore it because it is too important to allow it to die,” commented Huedepohl.
On March 29 the band and instrumental program (Guitar, Concert, and Jazz) of the Festival was held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Vermilion Elementary School, and was adjudicated by Bill Dimmer, who has played trumpet with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Tommy Banks Band and The Plumber’s Union (gave a command performance for the Queen at the 1978 Commonwealth Games.) He graduated from the University of Calgary, studied in Denmark and Chicago; and is currently the music director and conductor of Nova Musica. He is host/narrator of the ESO’s Educational Concert Series. During this program, there were performances by the Cold Lake High School Concert Band – Senior High - Grade 3 who won an award. Lauren Noster (won Violin/Viola – Own Choice – 8 & Under, and String Duet -12 & Under), Sonya Noster (String Duet- 12 & Under), Maureen Noster (won Violin/Viola – Own Choice12 & Under), Anjana Raja, Maegan Davies, Douglas Romeo, and Kaedence Erikson (won Guitar – TV/Movie/Pop – 14 Years & under) also performed on different string instruments such as Violin/
Viola, String Duet, and Guitars.
The piano program was held on March 30th at the Parkview Alliance Church and was adjudicated by Miriam Mahood who is a music examiner and has examined music students from all over North America. Since COVID began, she has examined 780 candidates, mostly from North America, but also from all over the world. Mahood is a graduate of the Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria, the Universities of Saskatchewan and Alberta and the Royal Conservatory of Toronto.

Approximately 40 people attended the Vermilion RCMP’s Open House at the Clandonald Hall March 29.
“I’ve been in the RCMP 19 years, and I wouldn’t change a thing. We have a small group of very dedicated members that I think do a fantastic job, but we held this meeting to find out what your perception is. There are nine members in Vermilion, and three support staff. When I joined the detachment I pushed for members to be on the road; there are no bad guys in the office,” said Sergeant Mike Dunsmore. The RCMP will be celebrating their 150th Anniversary or Birthday this year.”
A presentation gave an overview of the detachment area, the call volume and statistics, an RCMP App and body worn cameras, followed by a Q and A.
MLA Garth Rowswell said, “It provided a great opportunity for area residents to have a positive connection with the RCMP, and there was a good turnout. Usually they are meeting the public in a negative environment, where as this was an opportunity to have a friendly conversation.”
The Vermilion Detachment area covers from Ranfurly to Islay, and south of 619 following the Battle River and north to meet up with neighbouring detachment areas of Elk Point, Two Hills County and Kitscoty to the northeast. Of 116 detachments in the province, there are 27 in the Eastern Alberta District, which he said includes Vermilion and is the biggest and busiest. The Vermilion Detachment looks after four zones; the Town of Vermilion, County of Minburn, County of Vermilion River, and a small portion of the County of Two Hills. With a minimum of two members on duty at a time.
“We try to be out of the office 80 per cent of the time, and when Priorty 1 calls happen; you don’t just get Vermilion Detachment. Rural crime is an issue plaguing western Canada, and the rural population within them; it’s not unique to our community,” said Dunsmore.
Of the crime, approximately 40 per cent
RCMP Open House
occurs in the Town of Vermilion (being it has the largest population), counties of Minburn and Vermilion River are each just over 25 per cent, the corner of the County of Two Hills is 3.1 per cent, and 4.9 per cent is a margin of error.
“You would think the busiest time would be Thurday, Friday and Saturday nights; but surprisingly Wednesday at noon is our busiest time, and Monday at 11 a.m. There are still a few nights a month with no calls for service,” said Dunsmore.
There were 27 assaults last year, a large percentage of computer based crime over COVID, and a 140 per cent increase in uttering threats over a 5-year trend (which he said two individuals with significant mental health issues contributed to those numbers). In October – December of last year, theft over $5,000 increased by 1,200 per cent.
“That’s a big number. There were multiple stolen vehicles over a couple weeks that were by travelling criminals. Watching a video, from the time they took the screwdriver to the door until they pulled out of the yard was 17 seconds. Some people leave their keys in their car; and even when you don’t, how many times are your eyes diverted? We don’t get very many back (likely under 10 per cent). They are stolen for two reasons; for fun (finding them burned out or in ditches), or going to a truck shop (being harvested for parts),” said Dunsmore. “What can you do as a citizen? I grew up as a farm kid on the weekends and the keys are often in the vehicle. We have to find another way to run our farms and not make them so accessible. One family staged vehicles, trailers and quads to start work first thing in the morning; but they were all gone. You can insert battery cut off switches (they will do damage, but you will have your vehicle).”
When asked what citizens can do to protect themselves, Dunsmore said, “The Criminal Code says you can use as much force as necessary to defend your person or property, but it has to be reasonable and it has to be
equivalent. We advocate for people to be our eyes and ears; not our hands. You never know who you are dealing with and where they are at in their head. They may be willing to use more force than you in order to evade further charges or parole violations.”
For example with a strange vehicle appearing at the end of your driveway, he said he’s the first to advocate for being a good neighbour (or offering help), but he said those people are being taken advantage of. The RCMP launched a Mobile App one and a half years ago as a way to report non-urgent property crimes).
“The police rely on citizens to be our eyes and ears,” said Dunsmore.
As for body-worn cameras, he said every police officer he’s talked to in the past five years is 100 per cent in favour of them.
“We owe it to the citizens just as much or with even more fervour than other investigations to prove complaints of excessive force. Body worn cameras are coming and it’s a great thing,” he said.
They have been used in other areas such as the Calgary Police Service since 2016, but he said the RCMP has to be consistent from coast to coast and north to south. St. Paul and St. Albert are two of the communities currently piloting them. They do have an on/off switch and he said they are developing a policy on when they should be activated (not when they are home for lunch, etc.), but he agreed they should remain on during formal interactions. Footage from the cameras would automatically be fed to the officer’s car until they pull into the parking lot where it would automatically upload to offices in Edmonton and Ottawa and be held for years.
Asked what role peace offers play he said, “They are invaluable; they supplement
the things we do (things we quite frankly don’t have the time for). If the municipality could afford more, we would work with them more.”
Asked about a provincial force he noted that when working with Cochrane RCMP in 2004 or 2005, they did a study on contracting Calgary City Police but it did not happen.
“You should look at getting the best bang for your buck, but I hope it doesn’t happen.” said Dunsmore.
One of the attendees said, “I heard on the radio that if you want to have a democracy then you have to have enforcement. Thank you for coming to work everyday. I appreciate having a democracy to live in and as crazy as the world is now it’s not guaranteed, but we will have one as long as you are at work.
“It really is a team effort,” responded Dunsmore.
“These town hall meetings give people a chance to voice their opinion better than at the coffee shop, and reminders to lock their trucks and shop. And it gives one another support,” said County of Vermilion River Councillor Les Cusack. “In the busy seasons with seeding and calving sometimes people just forget to take their keys out of the vehicle. As inconvenient as it is to keep everything locked, it is the best prevention.”

Happy Easter everyone. It is so nice to be able to get together with family and friends. Let’s make the most of it. As I write this, the ground is still covered in snow, but we know that and any unexpected time the snow will melt away and reveal the bare ground, ready and waiting to be reborn. The seasons tell the story of the death, rebirth, growth and harvest every year. Seeds that seem lifeless will be planted and spring forth into life. What a miracle it is that each seed, though it appears dead, springs to life from an invisible life source that is stored within it. As we enter the Easter holy week, it is a time to contemplate the reason that we have Easter. It is that Jesus, the very son of God, died a painful

death on a cross as the ultimate sacrifice, and in three days he rose back to life, so that anyone who truly believes this miraculous event, and is not ashamed to confess that he believes in Jesus, will go to heaven. We celebrate that our ticket to heaven has been bought and paid for, we only need to receive it by believing. By believing we become carriers of this very precious seed.
I look forward to seeing the pussy willows and then the green leaves start to bud and unfold. New born bunnies, baby chicks, calves, colts, and lambs are all part of spring. Our niece just had a sheep that had four baby lambs. What excitement. Easter food traditions has me thinking of ham, scalloped potatoes, potato salad, fresh salads and desserts like cheese cake, angel food cake, poppy seed cake and chiffon cake. Deviled eggs are a great way to use up colored eggs.

I really appreciate houseplants. Especially throughout the winter when spring becomes a foolish little dream. Of course, I’m not as good at growing them as some people, but I try. Sadly, there is one variety of plant I love but have never been able to keep alive – a Boston fern.
I have a friend that likes them too, and several years ago, she had a dandy. Each visit to her home, I’d see it sitting proudly in the front window; its emerald fronds sweeping her hardwood floor.
“His name is Klaus,” she’d said fondly, giving him a loving little spritz of water. After a few months, I asked for the secret to her

success. Her eyes darted guiltily away, “To be honest, this is the fifth Klaus I’ve had.” She sighed deeply, “I can’t grow them either.”
As for me, I’d get one from a greenhouse and tend it lovingly, allowing myself bright hopes for its future, and then a leaf would flutter to the floor, and I’d know it was all over. Despite my best efforts, it soon became the spiny, lifeless husk I knew so well.
There was one time, however, when I was able to grow a wonderfully fertile specimen. It was in a cool place with indirect light. The soil was kept moist, and I gave it a good soaking with pure rainwater every month. I fertilized sparingly and frequently misted. By golly, it flourished!
Then one hot summer day, I stood at the window, watching my children playing outside. A smile crossed my lips as Chris came into view, leading his younger siblings

on some wild adventure of destruction and mayhem, as was his custom. Turning, I glanced at my healthy fern and moved to fetch the water bottle. In this heat, it surely needed a drink.
Grabbing the mister from beneath the sink, I applied it generously, shining beads of moisture lingering on each lush green leaf. But wait! What was that smell? Why was the nose-wrinkling scent of Javex suddenly floating on the afternoon air? I lifted the bottle and took a whiff. Bleach?
“CHRISTOPHER!” I hollered out the door as I charged past with the fern. Plunking the poor thing into the tub, I started the shower. Maybe the poisonous effects could be rinsed away. Meanwhile, Chris appeared behind me with a carefully constructed look of innocence. He didn’t know why he’d been summoned, but applying his look of innocence was the safest bet until he figured it
mixture while beating. In a separate bowl sift together the cake flour, 1 cup of sugar, the salt and baking powder. Add the flour mixture into the egg yolk mixture a quarter at a time. Continue beating until well blended. In a separate bowl beat the egg whites until foamy. Add the cream of tartar. Continue to beat until very soft peaks. Slowly add the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and continue to beat, all the while ensuring that the egg whites are at the soft peak stage (the peak flops over). Gently stir one third of the egg white mixture into the egg yolk batter, until just blended. Gently fold the remaining egg white mixture into the egg yolk batter, add the poppy seeds. Pour into a tube pan and bake for 60-70 minutes. Invert the pan while cooling and allow cooling completely before removing from the pan. Frost with a slightly thinned vanilla butter cream icing. It would be pretty to garnished the cake with fresh wild rose petals, which by the way are edible.

“Why have I just misted my favorite plant with bleach?” I ground out between clenched teeth.
Jauntily, he began answering back, “I don’t know. Why have y—” until I fixed him with my own look, known to my kids as “the look of death.” He fell silent and took a sudden interest in his shoes. “Well, it might be because I put some in there to kill ants on the sidewalk,” he finally mumbled.
“WHAT?” I roared, and he scampered out the door, wisely not returning till suppertime when I’d cooled down.
In any case, the fern died, and that was the last one I grew. Just didn’t have the heart for it anymore. Give me a geranium or a nice succulent, even a hoya, and I’m good to go. Just keep those poor bloody ferns in Boston. To contact Helen or to learn more about her stories and books go to helentoews.com

The year 1929 was an important year for Vermilion. After all, this was the year that the community received one of the top rural hospitals in the entire province.
On Nov. 23, 1929, another big event happened when a large meeting was held in the community with some very important guests.
The Lt. Governor of Alberta, William Egbert, had arrived the day previous in the community. He had served as the Lt.

Joining him was MLA George Goadley and they addressed a large group of 400 students and townsfolks in the school gym after a large banquet was held.
This was such a huge event for the area that CKUA from the University of Alberta had set up receivers so that the entire event could be broadcast across Alberta.
The Lt. Governor expressed his admiration for what he called the progressive spirit of Vermilion, especially among its town council. He stated that the co-operation of individuals in everything related to community life was essential to success and to the
development of a community spirit.
He also praised Alberta as a whole, stating that no other place in the entire world had progressed as much as the province had in the previous 24 years.
Mayor Fallow then welcomed MLA Hoadley, the Minister of Agriculture, to the stage. Hoadley gave a historical review of the schools of agriculture in Alberta and he praised the agricultural educational system in the province.
He then outlined the plans for a school of agriculture in Vermilion and his hope that Vermilion would become a teaching and vocation centre for the province.
Then scholarships worth $50 each were

I have read the pros and cons as printed, but I found some a bit exaggerated. The airport is needed as a fixed wing ambulance, and also by farmers as stated in on the pros.
I vote to keep the airport.
However, let me make it clear, this is not only a decision between the town and the airport committee. Twenty thousand people or more live in the airport service area. Of these, 4,500 live in the Town of Vermilion. At this time, the Town of Vermilion
has all the responsibilities; that is maintenance, snow removal, and financial.
Everyone has to understand that this issue requires the commitment from many other sources to continue.
Some examples would include the County of Vermilion River, Minburn County, Two Hills County, Village of Mannville, Derwent, Clandonald, Dewberry, and now also Elk Point.
All the people above have access to the Vermilion Airport via air ambulance. Highway 16 and 41 accident victims that have been flown out.
Someone has to pay. The Town of Vermilion cannot do it alone. We have to do it right this time, even if it takes a year. If not done right, it will fester and fester.
Let me say this, if no one else comes to the table then it should close; it will be obvious they don’t care – that is until the day they need it.

Nooks and crannies have a lot of potential, so use them wisely. Increase your seating with a wooden corner bench or take advantage of an unusual angle to highlight a decorative piece such as a sculpture, shrub or fountain.
4. CREATE DEPTH
If you have a narrow yard, opt for long, thin pavers rather than square ones to draw your eye toward the back of the yard. Alternatively, create a winding path to make the space appear wider. Place plants with small, dark foliage at the rear
In addition, consider the pots. You may want to select ones that resemble the shade or texture of your paving stones.
A welcoming walkway
If you have a walkway, it’s a good idea to embellish it with a bit of vegetation. For a curved walkway, or one with a sharp turn, it’s a good idea to create a focal point where it’s most angled. This might con sist of a well-
tended rosebush, a small wee ping tree or a vibrant flowering perennial. Check to see how your choice of plant looks at various angles, including from the street, the driveway and the front door, before you dig into the ground.

Spring is a beautiful time of year when flowers start to bloom and trees become green again. It is also the perfect time to take care of your yard and garden. Landscaping To-Do’s:
Clean Up Your Yard
The first step to a beautiful landscape is to clean up your yard. Remove any debris that may have accumulated over the winter, including dead branches, leaves, and debris. Rake your lawn to remove dead grass and leaves that may have accumulated. This will help your lawn to breathe and encourage new growth.
• Create a designated space to safely store tools, fertilizers, pool chemicals and other potentially dangerous items. Don’t keep toys in the same area.
Fertilize Your Lawn
After aerating your lawn, it is important to fertilize it. Fertilization helps to provide essential nutrients that your lawn needs to grow healthy and strong. Choose a high-quality fertilizer that is appropriate for your lawn type and follow the instructions carefully.
Weeding is an important part of garden care. Remove any weeds that may have grown in your garden beds to prevent them from competing with your plants for nutrients and water. Weeding will also help to keep your garden looking neat and tidy.

Spring is the perfect time to plant seeds and seedlings in your garden. Choose a variety of plants that are suitable for your soil type and climate. Remember to water your plants regularly and provide them with the nutrients they need to grow healthy and strong.
• Make sure pools, ponds and other bodies of water are fenced off and only accessible through a gate that latches. Check if your municipality has height requirements.
Add Mulch
Adding mulch to your garden beds will not only enhance the appearance of your landscape but also help to retain moisture in the soil. Mulch also helps to
Plan Your Garden

Importance Of Bull Sales For Alberta’s Cattle Industry
Lorna Hamilton Reporter
Bull sales are a crucial event for the cattle industry in Alberta. These sales bring together breeders, buyers, and enthusiasts from all over the country to showcase and purchase top-quality breeding stock. Alberta has a long-standing reputation for producing some of the best beef cattle in the world, and the bull sales held in the province are a testament to this.
Bull sales typically occur in the late fall, winter and spring months, with many of the major events happening in January, February, March and sometimes in April. These sales are organized by breed associations and individual ranches, and they serve as an opportunity for breeders to showcase their best animals and for buyers to find new additions for their herds.
Peyton Hess
Club Reporter
The main focus of bull sales is to offer genetically superior breeding stock to producers. The bulls on sale are typically purebred and have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation to ensure that they meet industry standards for genetic traits such as weight gain, feed efficiency, and carcass quality. In addition, buyers are able to evaluate the bulls’ physical traits, such as conformation and temperament, to ensure that they are compatible with their existing herds.
One of the most significant bull sales in Alberta is the Canadian Western Agribition held in Regina, Saskatchewan. This event attracts breeders and buyers from across North America and features topquality bulls from all major beef breeds. Other major bull sales in Alberta include the Calgary Bull Sale, the Medicine Hat Spring Bull Sale, and the Edmonton Fall Classic Bull Sale, plus numerous individ -
ual ranch bull sales.
Bull sales also provide an opportunity for producers to network and learn about the latest industry developments. Many sales feature educational seminars and workshops on topics such as herd health, breeding techniques, and marketing strategies. Breeders and buyers can connect and share information about best practices and new technologies in the industry.
The economic impact of bull sales in Alberta is significant. These events generate millions of dollars in revenue for the province’s agricultural industry, from the sale of breeding stock to the ancillary services provided by local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and transportation companies.
In conclusion, bull sales are a crucial event for the cattle industry in Alberta. They provide an opportunity for breed -
ers to showcase their best animals, for buyers to find genetically superior breeding stock, and for producers to learn about new industry developments. These sales contribute significantly to the economic prosperity of the province and help to maintain Alberta’s reputation as a world leader in beef production.

Attendees Enjoyed Sculpting Class
Lorna Hamilton Reporter
The Vermilion Community Art Club held a sculpting class that was open to beginners and more advanced students alike. The class was held on March 31 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and continued on April 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the art room at J.R. Robson school. The class was organized by club member Eraine Wegiel and was taught by Kelly Clemmer, an artist from Wainwright who has been creating art since he was a young
child.
Clemmer works with various art mediums such as paint, clay sculpture, and used to make jewelry. He is also the chair of the Wainwright Arts Council, which organizes the Wainwright Art Show every February. Clemmer’s passion for art is evident in the way he teaches and shares his knowledge with others.
The class was a success, with attendees of all skill levels and ages coming together to learn and create. Clemmer started the class by demonstrating various sculpting tech -
niques, such as building your armature, and then gave the students hands-on experience by guiding them through the sculpting process for their own unique sculpting idea.
Wegiel commented that she thought it was an amazing class, and said that any class that is held by the club and is not filled will be posted on their Facebook page. The Vermilion Community Art Club welcomes new members, and the registration fee is only $25 per year. The club offers 3-4 art classes a year and monthly paint till you faint events.
Clemmer was thrilled with how the class went, saying, “I am happy that
everyone enjoyed the class and I hope they took away knowledge and caught the sculpting bug.” His passion for sculpting is contagious, and many of the students left the class feeling inspired and eager to continue exploring the world of sculpting.
The Vermilion Community Art Club is a organization that provides a supportive and creative space for artists to come together and learn from each other. If you’re interested in learning more about the club and upcoming classes and events, you can reach out to the club by checking out their Facebook page Vermilion Community Art Club.

Hint Of Spring – In Our Garden Of Grief
Walking Through Grief
Submitted
There is a change in the season and there are changes on our grief journey.
Changes and good-byes care painful and times of fear of what the future will be like. The feeling of life “out of control” and fears of adjusting to a new and different course in our lives. Acceptance is not an overnight happening but a gradual change, just as the seasons. It can be a time of an emotional roller- coaster.
When in this time in our lives we need to look at how we are going to cope. We need some coping tools for our emotional grief garden.
LOOKING AT LIFE’S ALTERNATIVES: Acceptance of life as it is now and having the courage and ability to look at choices and changes that will happen for the tomorrows. Life is like a river ever changing and moving. We cannot stay rooted in the pain of today or a fixed picture of what life “is,” we have to be open to there being an alternative to where we are now.
USING OUR MEMORIES: (sum total of what we can remember). Persons and relationships never die but become memories. We can take back some control of our lives and our grief journey when we are in charge of our memories and can recall good ones and shut out bad ones. Sometimes those memories will cause tears but later on our journey we will be able to laugh and cry too. Embrace the past but hold it gently as you move forward.
VERBALIZE FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS TO A SUPPORT
PERSON: Finding and utilizing that support person or group is a vital tool to healing and moving forward. Sharing without shame or fear, feelings of “crazy,” anger, sadness, joy or relief, all
aprt of the grief journey. “No man is an island unto himself” We need people to talk to, to heal and become a new wholeness. Do not forget the children and other members of the family who are all on their own journey, too. We can share the gift of honesty, with ourselves and the others in our family and have a concern with where they are on their journey. We can encourage and listen
to their feelings and emotions and help them find supportive people .
BEGIN THE USE OF PROBLEM SOLVING: a) Look at what problem you are facing and state it. (b) begin to express how you feel about it. (c) Find a trustworthy person to share what you are experiencing. (d) Seek support and insight from others who are in similar situations. (e) Realize you are
the only person you can change . Get out those coping tools, take courage, you are in charge of tending your grief garden.

1. Why do I volunteer?
I am a social person and volunteering lets me meet new people and build community. Being part of the Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce on the board in past and as President this year, lets me combine my social skills and business skills together to try and assist local businesses and help succeed to the best they can.
2. What have I learned from volunteering?
As a volunteer you never stop learning. Learning about others, yourself and our community. Small changes can have a big impact to people, to businesses and to our friends and neighbours.
I’ve also learned a deep appreciation for all the volunteers in our community. All the hard work and endless time
that gets put in by a lot of people to make our community thrive.
3. Why are volunteers important to the community?
Volunteering is important to helping worthwhile causes to people or groups in our community and who are in need. Many organizations rely on the generosity of our local volunteers and cannot continue without them. Every volunteer is so important to keep our

Vermilion Roar Lacrosse Hosting Free Open House
Angela Mouly Reporter
The first dates of the Open House for Vermilion Roar Lacrosse were March 28-31, at the Vermilion Arena. Looking to recruit more players at all age levels, they are hosting another three days April 3 – 5.
Jenna Waltz said, “This Open House is an amazing idea; I think all the sports should do it so the kids can try it.”
Her son, seven-year-old Cash, attended his first time practising the sport on March 30. New, young players had the opportunity to try out and get a feel for the equipment, while older athletes practised a passing drill and were challenged to see which group could get the most consecutive passes.
New president this year, Greg Betz has been involved for 22 years, first as a player and then as a coach.
“Lacrosse is great exercise and helps
develop hand-eye coordination. You don’t need to be a superstar to play; anyone can play the sport. We welcome players age 4 – 16. I’d always love more volunteers, but we are really struggling post pandemic getting enough numbers of children to play; that’s why we need to do the Open House. It’s free to any participants coming out and there is zero obligation to register,” said Betz.
Throughout the Open House, youth will learn how to pick up the ball properly, how to carry the ball properly, and will practise shooting and passing. He noted that skills that would make an ideal player would include, great listening, as well as being willing to work as a team, and being willing to try hard.
Vermilion Roar is in a competitive league complete with playoffs, but is more about development. It is local to the Lakeland Region including teams from
Wainwright, Bonnyville, Cold Lake, Lloydminster, and Lac La Biche. If teams win their league they will get to go to provincials as well.
Betz has four children of his own involved all in separate age groups and said, “To me, teamwork and comradery is #1 in Vermilion Roar Lacrosse. We make sure everyone is included; we are not prolacrosse, we are a minor organization and are here to make sure the kids are having fun.”
Having been involved for so many years himself, he said the sport is a great way for both children and parents to socialize and that it teaches a lot of life skills.
“Like any sport, your coach is kind of like your first boss; you need to learn to listen to them. The payoff when you learn to listen as a team is that you start to succeed. There are no solo efforts.
It’s great to see new and returning play-
ers,” said Betz. “It compliments hockey a lot. The hard work and determination will benefit you the rest of your life.”
Lacrosse, he said helps bring the community together, from players families to children from different schools having the chance to play together. They draw players from Mannville, Vermilion, Dewberry, Marwayne, Kitscoty, Clandonald and Islay.
The next dates for the Open House are April 3, 4, and 5 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. for U7, U9, and U11; and 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. for U13, U15, and U17 age groups. Registration is open until April 17, and the league will run until the end of June. It is not necessary to register to come to the Open House, and only running shoes and a hockey helmet are needed to participate. For more information or to register you can visit vermilionroarlacrosse.com. Any other questions can be directed to Greg at 780-580-4438.
