Enel Green Power announced the completion of their first turbine at their Grizzly Bear Creek wind project on September 7, south of Mannville. One of 34 turbines on the project, it is the first of theirs in central Alberta, with the rest being near Pincher Creek.
The turbines can operate with wind blowing at 3m-25m per second.
Site manager, Justin Williams, said that a lot of times there will just be a slight breeze on the ground, but higher up in the air, the wind speed increases. As time has gone on, the towers have become taller and the blades

The generator creates electricity and an electrical system runs underground where a substation collects it and connects to Alberta Interconnected Electric System.

April 21, 1947, was a historical day when Princess Elizabeth pledged her life to the service of the Commonwealth on her 21st birthday. The Princess was on a tour of South Africa with her parents and younger sister. She began her speech by saying, “On my twenty-first birthday I welcome the opportunity to speak to all the peoples of the British Common wealth and Empire, wherever they live, whatever race they come from, and whatever language they speak…” But, the most famous part of her speech which has been played repeatedly over the years was when she said, “I should like to make this dedication now. Covering my laugh, I conceded that, yes, it was true. Kids are often surprised by this fact. If they never see me outside of a school setting, it’s logical to think I couldn’t exist outside of it. And since I begin and end my day on a bus, it becomes reasonable that I must pull down some lonely road to gobble a soli tary meal of canned beans. Then, it follows that I must sit bolt upright behind the wheel throughout the night or bed down on a cold vinyl seat; my only goal in life to drive again at dawn’s first light. It makes

In addition to the Livestock Tax Defer ral provision, producers have access to a comprehensive suite of Business Risk Management (BRM) programs to help them manage significant risks that threaten the viability of their farm and are beyond their capacity to manage. BRM programs are often the first line of support for producers facing disasters and farmers are encouraged to make use of these programs to protect their farming operations.

The income may be at least partially offset by the cost of reacquiring breeding animals, thereby reducing the potential tax burden associated with the original sale.

Canadian farmers are directly impacted by climate change and its effects can be detrimental to sustaining operations. To provide assurance for producers as they make difficult herd management decisions, today the Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced an initial list of designated regions in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Mani toba where Livestock Tax Deferral has been authorized for 2022 due to extreme weather conditions.TheLivestock Tax Deferral provision
“Canada’s producers continue to show remarkable resilience as they face challenges and uncertainty due to extreme weather conditions. Designation of the Livestock Tax Deferral provision provides farmers with the resources needed to make informed deci sions and focus on rebuilding their herd and their operations,” The Honourable MarieClaude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
it was a challenge to find adequate feed for the new operation, as well as the initial start up costs as bison require a larger infrastructure. Bison he said, are different from other animals in that they don’t partic ipate in calving, and the handling is a little more“Bisonintense.arepretty rambunctious in close quarters. They are going to bang and smash into things; they are big animals. At first people are pretty intimidated, but we take a pretty cautious approach to things,” saidDependingRomanchuk.on the time of year, Dewberry Valley Bison generally keeps about 100 head of bison at various ages. They maintain a small calving herd of about 35 animals which maintains some of the herd but they do purchase to keep their gate to plate operation supplied.
Dewberry Valley Bison currently provides meat to over a 250 kilometre radius with most of their product going to Edmonton. Most of those customers are supplying their household deep freezes, while local customers tend to pick-up smaller portions purchasing a few steaks or burgers for the weekend.
raised bison product, they don’t ship many animals out because most are butchered, and their customers so far tend to be recur ring“Weones.aren’t focused on a big, chunky animal, but a prime well fed animal that has had a non-stressful experience which transfers into a higher quality meat. Both heifers and bulls are butchered between 18-24 months which is a prime age range where the meat is most tender, “said Romanchuk. “All of our finished bison that go for sale have a grass/hay diet through out their life cycle, but finishing animals are on a hand-fed oat diet for a minimum of 90 days.”Supplementing with hand-fed oats in addition to hay and grass makes them a bit unique. Romanchuk said a large quan tity of producers use a self-feed approach, whereas they see their animals everyday putting the oats in troughs with pails. This makes them very low stress becoming very accustomed to humans before they go to “Webutcher.findand our butcher attests to less stressed high quality animals that walk on and off the trailer as opposed to crashing on and off. I think that has a lot to do with how we feed them,” said Romanchuk.
Their investment in the process has developed a certain pride and satisfaction when they see a high quality product going out. Romanchuk said, “Feedback from customers saying they would never go back to anything else motivates us. I don’t think we anticipated just how quiet we could get the animals just through proper handling and hand-fed strategy. Bison have a reputation for being very wild; they are rambunctious - don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t anticipate we would have that much success. Another thing is just how good the meat is when it is handled right and fed right. That is not to take a shot at my beef producing counterparts; it’s just that bison is not a gamey-meat, especially if fed properly it is even a bit sweet. The meat actually is very comparable to beef but less fatty.” Continued on page 11

“Bison is a leaner meat than say the beef or pork alternatives that people typically choose for red meat. In addition, the nutri tional advantages of bison include being a rich source of vitamin B12 & B6, iron, zinc, and niacin,” said owner Brad Romanchuk. “I think if people find the right producer,
they should be able to source their meat more affordably. The rancher should be more profitable because they aren’t truck ing the animals, and the consumer doesn’t pay the in between costs they would find in a grocery store. Additional costs are also incurred with the regular trips as well as the transportation of the animals. On the other side of that she said, “It’s great to have some beautiful scenery with the Alberta land as, pardon the stereotype, we are not accustomed to so many trees and hills. There also seems to have been quite a few rains this year that missed our pastures at home, but hit the Alberta pastures, so that really helps looking into the fall.”

“I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention a few others. My wonderful father-in-law and his brother who are still farming in their late 70s/early 80s. They are certainly an inspiration. I also have huge appreciation for my motherin-law who has spent decades doing field meals, running for parts, and doing their farm books. She is an inte gral part of the operation. Honestly, every farming friend or neighbour we have is a constant inspiration because we all have ups and downs, but in the end we pull through, help each other out, and keep going,” said Warrington. So far the weather this harvest has been too hot and dry, but she supposed it was better than the alternative. The Warrington’s are not alone in their race to finish harvest, as all across the prairies farmers work to wrap up the growing season and prepare for winter; many of whom are grateful for the bounty the season brings.
“I admire his ability to preserve through all the adversity farming can bring. He takes great pride in making sure his animals are well taken care of and does a great job of that. He works long hours without complaint and in temperatures that make me want to curl up and cry. I am impressed over and over again when he comes up against a problem and figures out a solution. Farmers have to think on their feet because there is always something new to contend with.
“Diversification is key in most small businesses, and farming is no excep tion,” said Warrington. “People can gain patience, tenacity, perseverance and a strong work ethic from being involved in farming. It also encour ages problem-solving, teamwork, and a sense of humour because some days, all you can do is laugh.

Despite what some people seem to think, farmers care about the land. They care about their animals. And they care about people. Can improve ments be made? Of course. Just as in any industry. But you’d be amazed at how much thought and effort goes into each step along the way. Don’t just demand change for change’s sake. We need to make changes that don’t just sound like they will make things better, but actually do make things better.”Throughout her lifetime her involve ment and appreciation for farming has continued to grow. Growing up, her father taught her and her sisters to respect the land and take care of the animals with a passion that she says was“Heunmatched.workedlong hours on his own farm as well as always being willing to help others. He literally taught us to stop and smell the roses (or the mint or whatever) when out in the pastures. I will admit that there was a time when I didn’t fully appreciate his lessons, or this way of life; but I have grown to be incredibly grateful for them, and I am honoured to be able to continue the tradition,” said Warrington.

Her next influence in agriculture was through her husband, Aaron. She said he loves what he does to the point it literally translates to who he is.

I sincerely wish people who aren’t involved in the Ag Industry would make an effort to get a closer look and actually listen to what people within the industry have to say. The lack of hands-on knowledge an average person has of the industry, combined with the abundance of misinformation being widely presented these days, makes it easy to see how people can get a jaded view.

Our Spartans use so much brain power
everything has been brought in, our Spartan family takes on the important job of preparing the feast. Younger students make centerpieces for each table, older students advertise the event, while others peel rutabagas and mash potatoes. It really is a feat that takes dedication from all students and staff. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Moir for all of the hours she spends volunteering, organizing, and coordi nating this special event. Many hands may not make light work, but in this case… it makes a delicious meal! Come break bread with us and celebrate the opportunity to be together this harvest. As a side note, if you are feeding farmers, nurses, or anyone else who may not be able to attend the event in person you can purchase take-away plates of food to go. We hope to see you there!

Parents can use School Cash to purchase milk cards online for their children or you can send cash or a cheque with your child. Mrs. Dewing has already been busy working her magic and cooking for all of our junior and senior high students. At our lunchroom, students can purchase snacks, meals, desserts, and bever ages. Hot lunch for our elementary students begins this week. Hot lunch is available to be purchased every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and the cost is $4.50 per meal.

School is now back in full swing, and we have settled into our new routines. St. Jerome’s School is excited to be hosting our Annual Fall Supper again this year. It will be held on September 22 and tickets can be purchased for either the early or late seatings. You can purchase your tickets using School Cash online, through your child, or if you do not currently have students that attend you can call and speak to Tina at the office. This is one of our school’s largest fundraisers that raises money to support student learning and events through out the school year. Spartans use the “Stone Soup” method to run this fundraiser. What that means is that each student brings a contribu tion to the meal (a rutabaga, a head of lettuce, a homemade pie, a block of cheese, etc.). Once
